Designer Christina Stambolian remembers Princess Diana coming into her shop in 1991 and asking for a “special dress for a special occasion,” according to Diana: A Life in Dresses. After sketching out a few ideas, Stambolian landed on a short number that took two dressmakers more than 60 hours to make. Princess Diana wore the dress a few years later to a dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park, and it was immediately dubbed the “Revenge Dress” after Prince Charles admitted to having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles that very same night. In reference to the ballet Swan Lake (one of Diana’s favorites), Stambolian says in Diana: A Life in Dresses that she was “thrilled to see Diana wear it on that night of all nights. She chose not to play the scene like Odette, innocent in white. She was clearly angry. She played it like Odile in black. She wore bright red nail enamel, which we had never seen her do before. She was saying: ‘Let’s be wicked tonight.’” According to Diana: A Life in Dresses, the dress remains in a bank vault and has not been seen for many years.

Galtrucco – marchio storico dell’azienda nata 150 anni fa, emblema di eleganza sobria, senza sfarzo, tipica del gusto della moda milanese – deve la sua notorietà, oltre alla qualità dei tessuti, alla bellezza delle vetrine, al rapporto con i grandi stilisti, all’architettura e agli arredi dei negozi ideati da rinomati progettisti. Il marchio Galtrucco si identifica nella città di Milano, con la quale l’azienda condivide una storia di energia e di rinascita, a partire dalla ricostruzione dopo i bombardamenti di piazza Duomo del 1943 fino a oggi, da quando nel 2001 l’attività commerciale ha lasciato il posto all’attuale gestione immobiliare nel segno di una continuità di stile e di intenti. Il Salone dei Tessuti, nella storica sede di via San Gregorio, è tuttora un vivace spazio per eventi o esposizioni legati soprattutto alla moda e al design. Galtrucco conserva nel palazzo di famiglia in via San Gregorio, l’archivio aziendale. Il fondo è composto da testimonianze di natura diversa: documenti che attestano la partecipazione attiva di Galtrucco alla ricostruzione del centro cittadino nel dopoguerra; una cospicua serie di fotografie (architetture di negozi, eventi, inaugurazioni) dai primi anni del Novecento agli anni 90; articoli di giornale; corrispondenza varia;  cartoncini pubblicitari; opere dell’illustratrice Brunetta e la serie di bozzetti oggetto di questo volume.

Fashion - Design

I’ve narrowed my line up of 6 to 4. I cleaned up my lines and used collage to see how to fabrics would work together. I’ve got the organza silk along with crushed velvet.

Crushed Velvet. With experimenting how certain fabrics would work with my silk. Collaging fabrics on top of one another rather than placing colour would give me a better sense of how they will go together. Similar to how I used all my primary sources on my croquis from the first week of fashion. I really love how this fabric looks because it reminds of the body of salmon or even pollack. Either way it reminds me of the type of texture you see from the fish after removing it scales.

I was also considering Hessian which is a woven fabric usually made of jute plant or sisal leaves. This type of fabric would be really easy for me to do fabric manipulation as if I were to iron or steam it in place it would give me clean lines,which would give me the advantage of replicating certain patterns of the fish.

I ended up going with the crushed velvet along with my organza silk. With having the “texture of a fish” from the crushed velvet and capturing the essence of the fin and tail using the organza would be a good contrast and I do actually like the colours too.
