I began to focus on one specific part on my research and looked at forms and texture. Kentridge was very into stop motion with charcoal so I decided to look into it and did a mini stop motion on my page of one of his work ‘peonies’. His work was mainly black and white but with a touch of red by using lines going across the page so took that and utilised it across my page.
After doing my research I’ve put together these moodboards inspired by Kentridge. The format wasn’t as important for me , just to put together on how I see his work and the mood I believe it portrays.
Understanding the artist and the way he works was very important since it would really give me an advantage of creating accurate and helpful moodboards to further help me get inspired with fabric sample along with my experimentation with my final line up
William Kentridge’s art style really intrigued me with the lack of colour however made up for it with different textures and shapes. He was very well known for his quick mark making and embroidery patch works. Drawings for projection was one of the many works he would do, using a distinctive technique in which he painstakingly creates, erases and reworks charcoal drawings.
I very much took inspiration with his quick mark making skills which quickly allowed me to explore different shapes and textures which would later help me with creating my moodboards and lineups.
By looking at the primary sources I cut parts of that fish and pieced two designs together to explore shapes. This allows me to take what I want from the forms so I could replicate it when draping onto the mannequin
On this week,we painted with Sylvia. We learnt how to mix colours of the same family.Dark,Medium and Light. I had a lot of fun doing this however when it comes to painting there are aspects that I can see myself working on. I believe with elective would be a little more difficult to incorporate into my project but I do have a few ideas such as painting on fabric
Practicing with life drawing. This was very helpful with getting proportions correctly. With wanting to use my body for modelling I would love to implement painting on the body or fabric.
Iris Van Herpen is a Dutch Designer who pushes the boundaries in Fashion.Creating these hypnotic garments she uses 3D printing and transparent fabric and her high level of craftsmanship.
I take inspiration with many of her collections and ‘sensory seas’ being one of the three. With taking ideas from animals of the deep she was able to create these garments with beautiful colour palettes and silhouette.
‘Roots of Rebirth ‘ focuses on nature itself and I absolutely adore with the warm colour palette in this collection and her use of organza silk has got me very interested to where I would love to work with that type of fabric
‘Syntopia’, intertwining relationships between the organic and inorganic. Again with herpen using organza i was definitely sold into using that fabric into my own experiments.Birds were her main source of inspiration by collaborating with Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta they provided a glass bird for the inorganic aspect of the collection.
I am very excited to use Herpen as one of my artist research as this designer was able to push boundaries and created her collection that has never been done before and having her clothes of the catwalk and seeing how it moves is so mesmerising and with my project that an aspect that I want to take and use that to my advantage.
I’ve narrowed my line up of 6 to 4. I cleaned up my lines and used collage to see how to fabrics would work together. I’ve got the organza silk along with crushed velvet.
Crushed Velvet. With experimenting how certain fabrics would work with my silk. Collaging fabrics on top of one another rather than placing colour would give me a better sense of how they will go together. Similar to how I used all my primary sources on my croquis from the first week of fashion. I really love how this fabric looks because it reminds of the body of salmon or even pollack. Either way it reminds me of the type of texture you see from the fish after removing it scales.
I was also considering Hessian which is a woven fabric usually made of jute plant or sisal leaves. This type of fabric would be really easy for me to do fabric manipulation as if I were to iron or steam it in place it would give me clean lines, which would give me the advantage of replicating certain patterns of the fish.
I ended up going with the crushed velvet along with my organza silk. With having the “texture of a fish” from the crushed velvet and capturing the essence of the fin and tail using the organza would be a good contrast and I do actually like the colours too.
By using Procreate I used it to visualise where I see the movement of the fish. No straight or sharp lines, all curvy, wavy and soft.i felt as if i captured the essence of how a fish would move by using my organza
I got my friend Roisin to move the fabric showing the smooth and slowly movement of the organza, I had a a lot of fun doing this. It was really mesmerising watching her play with the silk and seeing how beautiful it moves around the air.showing the movement through images
I have my other friend Rosa throw around the silk,I’ve attached a video with Rosa showcasing the fabric and having fun seeing how it moves
Draping on the mannequin with just the organza silk was really fun to do and I love how this looks, exploring how it drapes was really cool to do.i wanted to how this silk would look like if it was fitted rather than loose and flowy.
After getting the organza silk,my plan was to see how well the silk will go with my printed fabric. Draping will be my min exploration. With the visuals I’ve done last week I’ll use the designs to drape on the mannequin. I really like how both fabrics differ but it works, reminds me of the body of a fish
I prefer having the printed fabric underneath and the organza on top, with it being shear I’m still able to see the fabric from underneath. The printed fabric being more fitted but I’m still wanting to have the silk to be more loose and flowy.not losing sight with wanting to show the flowyness of the the organza.
Draping with just the organza, draped a cape to put over the shoulders and when walking it will sure to show the movement of the fabric, I pinned it onto the mannequin resembling the fins of the koi fish. Video with myself showing how it moves.
This was soooo fun to move around, wondering how it will move when I drape it onto the body
With the fabric that I have and explored with I really wanted to think back with the fabric Aleksei Dayneks used which was feather silk however getting my hands one that type of silk was pretty difficult so I found another alternative that still moves beautifully and can resemble the movement of a fish. Organza Silk was the alternative that I ended up using. I seen something was missing in my experimentation and now with this silk I was explore draping with it and the fabrics I have now. I’ve included a video to show you how the fabric moves and how I it looks like the movement of the fin and tail of a koi fish.
