in the wake of all this new information during COVID, do you feel that maybe we should all just be masking all the time, COVID of no COVID? I mean it can't be the only airborne disease out there and immunocompromised ppl have always and will always exist so like. Following that thinking even if we don't have COVID we could still be risking other people's health (and lives) with other diseases we may have right? Idk I'm stressing a lot about this do I just need to wear a mask outside forever cos. Masks mess with my breathing and sensory issues and stuff but. I don't wanna?? Kill people by accident??? Aaaaa

Hello, thanks for reaching out about this.

I saw this ask about a month ago, and I needed time to think about how I'd respond to it (so I want to thank you for the patience!).

I'll try to answer all of this to the best of my ability, and I thought I'd answer this by going backwards (responding to the last things you said and then moving up with responding to the first things you said).

Everything is below the cut because this is very long!

First I'll try to summarize what I think you're asking here:

"Vulnerable people exist in this world all around me, therefore does this mean I'm constantly posing a threat to those vulnerable people's safety when I don't mask? The thought of this brings me feelings of stress, fear, and anxiety."

I find this is hard to answer candidly without risking stressing out you or anyone else who's aware of the consequences of their choice not to mask. Nonetheless, my honest answer is: yes, choosing not to mask means risking the lives and safety of vulnerable people, i.e. the disabled, immunocompromised, elderly, children & babies, and those that intersect those groups. That risk can take place directly (such as interacting with an immunocompromised elder) or indirectly (such as interacting with the parent of a disabled child).

I also want to add that it's not only those groups that need protecting. I firmly believe that regardless of your age and/or whether or not you self-identify as disabled or immunocompromised that everyone is at risk of the long-term consequences of this rapidly mutating, vascular, and immunosuppressive virus. No one is invincible to this, and I'll add: not even if you're vaccinated (still get vaccinated if you can, but know that you can still catch covid & develop long covid regardless of your vaccination status).

1. "Masks mess with my breathing and sensory issues."

I understand how that can be difficult to deal with, trust me. There are specific masks (such as most standard KN95s) that irritate the hell out of my face after a certain point. The way those specific masks brush against the hairs of my cheeks just make me want to rip the mask off my face completely. Finding alternatives has been a lifesaver, and they've allowed me to get through the day without wanting to maul someone lol. I don't know what masks you have tried out already, so I'll just recommend the one's I like as well as the one's I've heard good reviews on from people that also have sensory issues:

NIOSH 3m Aura N95 Respirators

Flo Mask

GATA Mask (Haven't tried this one yet, but I've heard a LOT of people say this has been a game changer for them because of how comfortable it is & how it doesn't trigger much sensory issues at all due to its silicone material. Probably the only con I've heard is the chance of the build up of moisture in the mask after a long period of use & water possibly dripping on your face— this happens to me sometimes with my Flo Mask. Edit on Sept. 26, 2023: I tried GATA Mask, and I personally have a tough time getting a comfortable fit & seal with it, even when getting the small/medium size for adults to see if it'll make a difference, and the nose bridge shape not fitting well for me is a huge con. Customer service is just suggesting I spend more, so I'll just give this one a break, for now at least. A lot of other people seem to like it though.)

Halyard FLUIDSHIELD [ASTM Level 3] Mask (My mom works in a hospital, and these are masks she brings home from work. They're VERY comfortable for me, especially when I'm masking at home. I recommend finding a way to tighten the loops that go around your ears to prevent as much gaps around the mask as possible. If tight loops hurt your ears easily, I recommend a mask brace.)

O2 Nose Filters (I haven't tried these out yet as well, but I've seen videos demonstrating how effective these are at filtering out SOOO many unseen particles. I don't recommend using these alone of course, because there's still a risk of inhaling harmful aerosols through your mouth. I would recommend using this as a reinforcement of the protective measures you take. For example: adding on a comfortable surgical mask— ideally one with a high filtration efficiency like the previous suggestion— with the nose filters. I think these nose filters would be great if you're removing your mask real quick to take a sip of water or if you're outdoors with enough distance from crowded areas & groups.)

In the ideal world, more people would mask during this on-going pandemic so those that deal with sensory issues and/or those that straight-up can't wear a mask due to medical reasons wouldn't have to worry so much about choosing between existing & risking their health. For now, we just have to find alternatives.

2. "Do I need to wear a mask outside forever?"

My answer to this is: yes until further notice. There's no foreseeable end to this pandemic right now, but it would be worth the patience to wait for adequate tech, treatment, and cures for covid-19 to be released before even thinking about getting loose with masking.

Societal mandates have been dropped way too soon, and public health in regards to covid-19 is being forced on us as an individual responsibility. As a consequence, this gives this rapidly mutating virus a lot of wiggle room to spread and do whatever it wants. This means doctors and experts don't have much answers yet for adequate treatment because there's a MAJOR lack of containment (such as masking & quarantining) and documentation (such as testing & reporting). This isn't to say there hasn't been any advancements whatsoever: for example, Washington University just developed a breath test for covid that gives results in just 1 minute! This is great news! And this is just one reason why it's very necessary for those who can mask to mask, so scientists are given more time to roll out helpful solutions & tools sooner.

Another thing I'll add is if you're symptomatic and/or are positive for covid, you should 100% be wearing a mask no matter what, point blank period. I say "and/or" because it is VERY much possible to have covid and not experience any symptoms at all; this is a major reason why it's necessary to mask up in public consistently, because you can't always know who you bump into that may have covid or not.

3. "Even if we don't have covid, we could still be risking other people's health (and lives) with other diseases we may have right?"

Yes, there is a possibility of spreading airborne diseases to vulnerable people unknowingly— without the protective & preventative tools that is.

I can only speak for America because that's the cultural zeitgeist I grew up in, but: I feel like many of us can agree that, unless you worked in a healthcare setting, what was "normal" (in America) before 2020 when it came to airborne illness prevention was definitely not the regular use of a mask. American health education mainly taught us if we're coughing & sneezing to try to do so in a tissue or into your elbow, as well as frequently wash our hands. That doesn't account for the way air actually works though. For instance, if someone with the common cold coughed into the inside of their elbow, the particles they coughed out are still able to linger in the air because their elbow isn't creating a tight seal around their mouth (their elbow may have caught the droplets from their cough— which are bigger & heavier— but the smaller, lighter aerosols would just spread around similar to how smoke does); it's the difference between 😪 vs 😶‍🌫️. The only sure way for the germs they've coughed out to be blocked from spreading to other people is if they wear a well-fitted, quality mask/respirator.

I feel like health education from a young age should include the benefits of masking; that way it would be easier to adapt to the need to put on a mask to protect ourselves & others as a collective. It would be phenomenal & wonderful if we as a collective were used to masking the same way we're used to putting on socks before putting on our shoes.

4. "Immunocompromised people have always and will always exist"

Yes, that is true. And that means necessary measures taken to protect them, as well as other vulnerable people, should be the standard.

5. "[Covid] can't be the only airborne disease out there"

Of course not. There's plenty of them. However, not all airborne diseases are the same, nor should they be treated as such. What's been observed in regards to the long-term effects of covid is not at all the same with other airborne diseases. Covid is a highly contagious virus that is more than just a respiratory disease. Its goal is to attack your immune system, nervous system, heart, brain, and/or other vital organs. That's what viruses do. They act smart and sneaky, and they have the capability to trigger illnesses in your body that you may not have had pre-infection:

Chickenpox is known to lead to shingles

Epstein-Barr is known to lead to mono

HPV is known to lead to cancer

Covid-19 has been found to lead to:

POTS

ME/CFS

Stroke & Heart attack

Alzheimer's

Dementia

"Brain Fog"; Memory & Concentration Problems

The list goes on, and these are only what we know of. Covid may not be the only airborne disease, but it definitely is a dangerous one with serious, long-term negative effects.

6. "Do you feel that we should all be masking all the time, whether or not covid-19 exists?"

In regards to masking with the existence of covid:

Yes. Masking is a vital method in the prevention of catching & spreading covid-19, because it is primarily spread through the air.

In regards to masking without the existence of covid:

See my answer for number 3, and also: given the fact wearing a mask can only do more good than harm for most folks, I don't see why not. Imagine a world where we don't have to worry about flu season or allergy season anymore because those aerosols are filtered out from consistent mask wearing. Sounds like the dream to me lol.

two things one is more so one of my personal woe things unrelated to you but i deleted my masterlist immediately after finishing it because i didnt like the layout of it; 3 hours down the drain SOBS other thing! imma go ahead and link the other fluff alphabet stuff so its a complete list! actually third surprise thing, WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME I ACCIDENTALLY FORGOT TO PUT P IN THE FLUFF ALPHABET/lh/nm i fixed it now but i cant believe i skipped a letter i feel so dumb

ABSTRACT- if you were to ever abstract he would probably abstract himself. i mean if the things about queener/queenie are true and they were close, then that would mean this guy would lose a loved one TWICE. that would most definitely break someone, and kinger is already on the edge as it is. if he somehow doesnt abstract, he probably becomes even more paranoid; kind of shutting everyone out almost because he sure as hell knows he cant take a third heartbreak. rarely ever leaves his pillow fort, unless hes physically dragged out? sometimes he forgets you're gone, because he just refuses to believe the truth. sad stuff

BONDING- will rattle on and on about cool bug facts, if he has his own collection in his room he will show you it! maybe, if you want, he will let you hold some of the critters! tells a lot of stories, nicer ones from when things in the circus arent so... bad.. usually when hes in a good headspace! you get the feeling he embellishes his stories... not too different from a grandfather trying to make his experiences seem more glamorous and action packed than they really were

CUDDLING- he is very hard, due to him being a chess piece, but his clothes do a really good job at softening him! no arms :(... usually rests his hands on your back, or maybe has one on your shoulder and the other on your hip. switches between being big and little spoon, sometimes he wants to hold and sometimes he wants to be held

DATES- you can find them here!

EMOTION- kinger is... odd... im not sure where he lies, because i think sometimes he does have moments where he remembers thing and it overwhelms him, so that may be the main time hes the emotional one. however, i guess this entire time for emotional ive been focusing on more.. 'bad' emotions, but i think kinger would gush about how much he loves you, like WOAH! he is just overflowing with feelings right now

FAMILY- honestly he gives me dad vibes, if this dude doesnt already have kids in the real world (wow thats a sad thought... dude is like MIA probably and his kids are left to wonder where he went. double owie if queener/queenie was his real life wife before things happened) so if you guys make it back to the real world and unite, you're gonna be a step parent! would he like to have more kids with you? i think it depends, he would want it, though!

GIFT- you know how some people put bugs in like, cases to preserve them or something? i feel like he would give you those with some of his prettier bugs! loves anything you give him, he always keeps them stored safe in his room!

HARSH- you guys dont really get into arguments, i dont think! kinger doesnt like hiding things from you unless its something deeply personal, but otherwise hes an open book to you

IN HOUSE ADVENTURE- here!

JEALOUSY- its not so much as him being jealous as it is him being paranoid that something is going to happen to him or you, so! even if he wasnt worrying himself half to death he doesnt exactly seem like the jealous type to me, tbh

KISS- its time for my favorite thing for characters with no mouth!!! he boinks his face into yours, i actually wrote something for this! not gonna link it since its so short and i can easily relay the idea: but he would internally hype himself up (usually does this if this is the beginning of the relationship, he gets more confident as time goes on!), and just lightly 'pecks' your cheek before pulling away. loves kissing your cheeks as well as the back of your hands. loves being kisses where his mouth would be as well as his cheeks

LOVE LANGUAGE- quality time!! this man follows you around like a love sick puppy, because he loves you so much but also because again, he worries.. he also likes doing acts of service for you, makes him feel like hes capable of doing things on his own (which he is!). loves it when you return the favor via words of affirmation

MENDED- is he dreaming? is he imagining things again?

nope, its really you. somehow, you've recovered from abstracting, and you're now out of the cellar. he wants to hold you and never ever ever let you go, out of fear that hes going to come to his senses any second and youll be gone. wants to keep you in the pillow fort with him, or at least within his line of sight

NO- its less of an active dealbreaker and more of a "hey this is going to stress him out and probably hurt his mental health" but like, i dont think he would pair well with a really really intense person. like sure caien is pretty intense, but its not like caine is going to be spending a significant amount of time with him everyday, but like. you know? like i talk about some characters enjoying being on their toes and left guessing in regards to their partner, but kinger is NOT one of those people. he needs stability

PDA- less of a case where he actively and knowingly indulges in PDA and more so a case where he subconsciously holds onto your hand to keep you at arms length and to feel you. due to his lack of arms he has probably wandered off without you (and his hand) at least once. is not opposed to PDA, though, so long as its not like. insane

QUIET TIME- quiet time between the two of you is very rare. sure kinger can be very quiet when hes alone, but when hes alone with someone else, someone he cares so much about.. he cant help but fill the silence with words, to keep the ringing in his ears at bay .. so really quiet time is talking time

ROSES- ill mention it again in V (i wrote v before this section), he loves giving you roses especially on special occations! loves receiving flowers as well, he seems like a rose kind of guy as well

SHH- the one thing he doesnt like talking about is queener/queenie, well, more so the last few days leading up to her abstraction. it brings up. well, memories. on one hand he doesnt want to forget her, but on the other hand he doesnt want to bare the pain of those terrible memories

TUNES- THIS THIS THIS THIS ONE ALWAYS COME TO MY HEAD WHEN I THINK OF ROMANTIC HCS FOR SWEETIDEAS FOR OLDER GUYS IDK WHY

UPSET- im going back and forth with a lot of these as i fill in the list so! tying this in with E, i mention one of the only times he gets emotional is when he remembers some unfortunate events that took place in the circus. you're going to need to console him and bring him back to the present moment :(. when you're upset he tries to distract you, takes you to his fort, and tells you stories

VALENTINE- on the chance that he remembers what day it is, hes going to give you the most sterotypical date he can give to you. i think it might be because i can kind of see kinger as like, a classic/stereotypical romantic when it comes to you. flowers, he cant take you out to dinner so he takes you out to the digital lake to gaze at the clouds and watch the bugs pass

WANT- he wants a companion, he wants stability, and thats something he needs. he wants someone to be compassionate about him, his wellbeing, and his interests

ZZZ- if you guys go to sleep together its always in his room, where hes more comfortable. he also has a thing where he insists on being the one closer to the door; almost as if hes offering himself as protection to you should someone unwanted to come in. huh. always sleep holding onto you, snores like a dad

Hi! Dropping in to say I read your TomJake fic and I loved it. It really feels like it could be canon compliant. As to how the season's going do you think you'll keep it as is or edit it? And are you still rooting for them or even Jake as a whole?

Aaaaa! Hi anon! So happy you liked my fic! It has gotten such a good reception and so much love I'm excited to write for the fandom again soon.

To answer your questions I do think I'll edit the fic a little if only to include Tatsu who wasn't named at the time I wrote it, and maybe change a bit of Tom's part as I wrote the fic thinking he was an orphan but apparently he has a mom so I'd have to tweak some stuff and include her, maybe change the song too as I found one more fitting for it.

Okay TomJake. Oh boy, to be honest I'm slowly losing hope but holding on by a thread. These two still seem to deeply care for eachtoher but they get on their own way more often than not and while I will root for them till the very end it wouldn't surprise me to see them fall apart too. But we keep the hope until the last scene!

Now as for Jake as a solo character, I am still rooting for him too. Episode 10 has the the fandom divided as to whether or not we should root for Jake or wish for him to be next boot. Personally I want him to grow and losing the only support he has left is likely the only way he's gonna learn.

Many say he will spiral and I'll be honest I could see him having a breakdown next episode. But I don't think he'll give up, my guess is that while he has no reason to get the money, he could try and win it for Ashley's sake. He's in a horrible position now as the villains are 5 against 4 heroes and the other 3 heroes gunned for him last time so I'd like to see him play solo at least one episode as he slowly reels from Ashley's boot and from the heroes who lets face it will unfairly pin this fail on him.

Yes I say unfairly because even if he was an emotional wreck that wanted to throw the vote, the other four also threw the vote and that caused the villains to win it.

Ally hates Jake because of him picking fights and being volatile and I agree with her assessment that actions speak louder than words and that Jake was wrong. However as annoying as he is you need his number to at least tie a vote. For the time being if I was her I would've faked niceness and tried to get along with him instead of fueling the fire. She didn't and took the fight personal too and voted Jake. Okay, what if he goes? It's four heroes against five villains, you're toast unless the villains fall apart and they target other stronger players. Jake is a meatshield and she should've just kept it chill like Ashley and that way he won't go off.

Same thing with Aiden. Dude knows Jake has it out for him because of the previous misunderstanding and because he's petty and volatile. Okay, don't poke the poodle then, don't fight him, don't provoke him. Come episode 9, he starts shit. Dude I get that on 8 Jake was an ass but I highly doubt you taunting him will stop him from trying to win, hell you taunting him is what got him to throw hands on episode 9. Don't poke the angry dude if you don't want him to go off, especially if he does not like you! Quiet and unnoticed got him far in season 2. If he had done so here too, maybe Jake wouldn't have been so down to fight. Same in episode 10. The shot was accidental and Jake should've just shrugged it off and kept his yapper shut, but then comes Aiden and goes 'Don't take it so personal'...My man, you just said that to the dude who already dislikes you and takes EVERYTHING personal! What did you think he was gonna do? Give you a hug? The vote too again was dumb 'It's him or us.' The only targets you have are Riya and Gabby, Tom and Ashley are stronger and if voted could've taken the villains in a tie breaker. Shut the hell up, and everyone vote a villain. They didn't and that's what got their second strongest to go off now. It's not just Jake's fault even if he bears the most fault. Everyone fucked up this episode and are now all on the chopping block.

Self indulgent wish fulfillment ahead while many say Jake will apologize next episode I don't want him to. I want him to be silent, solo, and seething. I want the others to try and pin it all on him only to be told what I just said and for Jake to tell them 'You want me out next? Fine, vote for me again, but I'm not going down without a fight! I owe her that much at least!' I want him to make it clear they all fucked up and they can't pin it all on him alone.

I want Tom to try and apologize for the vote only for Jake to not care, and even say 'I did the same to you last season. We're even.' Let my man seethe and work alone for a bit. Let him make Tom earn him back if he wants him because while I understand his reasoning for keeping away he still ghosted the man with attachment and trust issues for two whole years, avoided setting the record straight, lied to him (knowing his trauma around lying), and topped it all off with voting for him which resulted on his beastie being the one taken out. Jake has every right to pull the plug even if temporarily.

I wanna see him maybe bond with Grett if Yul is still being the worst. Boy would recognize the signs from what he went through with his own abusive ex and probably throw hands with Yul (id pay to see that). I wanna see him and Gabby talk too, Gabby explaining how she feels about Ellie being voted and wanting to support her and while Jake loathes her maybe he could provide perspective too. 'She did this to me for money in season 1, she was going down the same bad path again and you know it. If you love her, win for her and help her but getting out was necessary Gabby and you know it.' Imagine him getting those two out of the alliance, imagine him helping get Yul out or even just fool thewhole camp into thinking he's still a mess while in reality he is secretly plotting their downfall while playing the unstable wreck again. I'd be screaming to see both villains and heroes gagged if he played it right and got the villains out, if he maybe made it further than he did last time. I really want to see my boy shine and shine bright. So yes anon, I am rooting for Jake and hoping he at least gets one or two villains out if he does not win it all, and if he does then let him help support his beastie and make Miriam proud.

As for him and Tom we'll see if it can be saved. I'm hoping for the best but I'm also petty and if our himbo cop pulls one more stunt, I won't be sad should Jake choose to cut the cord for good.

on kataang and hope

its time for another ATLAnalysis woo

so I've watched ATLA maybe 4 or 5 times now? all at various points from when I was 6 to the present, and every time I pick up on more and more stuff, which leads to this little rant on Katara, Aang, and hope.

We all love to make fun of EIP, but this rewatch, something kinda stuck out to me.

EIP Katara loves talking about hope, but hope really is such a central theme to Katara's character, just not exactly how they put it.

Throughout the series, Katara consistently gives EVERYONE hope, so so so much hope. The most obvious example of this is, of course, when she meets Haru and helps the earthbenders on the metal rig in season 1.

"Thank you for helping me find my courage, Katara of the Water Tribe. My family and everyone here owes you much."

She does this again reassuring Aang when the Gaang finds the forest burned down in Winter Solstice Part 1 (the episode where they meet Hei Bai).

"These acorns are everywhere, Aang. That means the forest will grow back! Every one of these will be a tall oak tree someday, and all the birds and animals that lived here will come back."

And again when they're in the desert after losing Appa and it looks like all is lost.

"Ugh ... We're getting out of this desert, and we're going to do it together! Aang, get up. Everybody, hold hands. We can do this. We have to."

And again as the Painted Lady for that fishing village.

"I shouldn't have acted like someone I wasn't, and I shouldn't have tricked you. But I felt like I had to do something. It doesn't matter if the Painted Lady is real or not. Because your problems are real, and this river is real. You can't wait around for someone to help you. You have to help yourself."

And again.

It's such a consistent and powerful theme with her and you can't help but admire the sheer determination and drive she has to spread the hope that she somehow retains in such a war-torn world, and this is what gets me!

Who gives her that hope?

Aang.

Even when he was still in that iceberg, Aang gave Katara hope.

Aang gives her the hope that yeah, the world can be saved and the war will be over.

Aang gives her the hope that she won't always have to be the responsible person, that she'll be able to let loose and have fun when this is all over.

Aang gives her the hope that as a survivor of genocide, she isn't alone, that she has people who love her and will help her rebuild.

Katara gives everyone else their hope, but Aang is the one to give Katara her own hope.

It's so powerful that these two genocide survivors (who, for all intents and purposes, are the only two in the world who understand their shared struggle) are able to help each other like this, to make the other believe in HOPE and GOOD THINGS after all their hardships.

It's such a core of their characterizations and relationship and just aaaaa how can anyone not love them for that?

I love you, girl, but come on his grudge is against the man who killed his family, how would it be satisfied by killing someone else?

I really loved this bit because I think this is the final nail in the coffin of her misunderstanding of Sejo. She really believed he spared SY. And now she learns the final truth - however he may love her, neither she nor anyone else will ever come first for Sejo over power and his goals. This is the last of her illusions gone.

The way she tries to drag him to live...

The way his face changes. AAAAA!

But of course it doesn't stop him. It can't. It may have made his plan a little less suicidal if he knew earlier but he can't give up his revenge - he ultimately only does in the end because he is physically unable at that point due to blindness. Yes, he loves her sufficiently and wants a future with her sufficiently that he is able to stop now that he knows he will only be able to do a suicide attack and die without likely harming Sejo BUT that's the thing - he loves her enough to be able to live happily with her without achieving his vengeance because it is unachievable (as opposed to being eaten by that fact) but as long as it was achievable, he wouldn't have stopped even when he was more healed than he is now. He can't.

I wonder if he'd have been able to shoot her if daddy didn't show up. My money is on no, seeing how he barely was able to shoot Sejo, how he freaked out when she got shot and how earlier he couldn't even bear for her to keep stumbling. But still, SR is made of sterner stuff than me - MCW does specialize in playing a character who is a dating equivalent of going to the pound to get a dog and picking the one nobody wants and/or is feral and/or is abused or looked down by everyone and ending up with a devoted spouse out of it (see this, Innocent Man, Good Doctor, Flower of Evil.)

The way the arrow comes for SY and she jumps to cover him with her body and gets shot aaaaaa!!! The panic on his face! This is what I think finally gets through to him. Because he can convince himself her words are lies and the other actions are "small" and her putting a sword to her neck he hasn't seen himself but here he sees her willing to die for him AND after he treated her as an enemy and shot her father. He cannot deny things any more. And that is glorious.

I really love HQ@HW and the cards series. I think you’re exemplary at world building and it’s so immersive and aaaaa soo good!!!

I want to talk about hogwarts!Hinata for a minute, particularly about all the secrets he’s keeping. Trying to keep a mental list, he knows about a) Akaashi b) Oikawa’s magic and c) Suga’s grandfather and the identity of the Giant!!

Considering him keeping secrets is in the fic description I’m assuming its important, so are there any other secrets I’m forgetting about on my list? Will there be more secrets to come? And also, will the fact that “secret keeping” is an important thing in HP canon come into play here?

Lol sometmes I even struggle to get a hard count of how many secrets Hinatas keeping. But yeah I'd say it's safe to say there's more to come.

Some big ones ones (who they are a secret from and whether he knows they are secrets) are these...

1.) That Akaashi is a psychic--secret except for Akaashi--Hinata does know it's a secret

2.) Oikawa's magic--secret except for Oikawa--Hinata knows it's a secret

3.) The Giant's real name and that The Giant's a muggleborn--secret from everyone--Hinata has no clue it's a secret. INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT SECRET

4.) Yachi's aunt and Azkaban breakout--secret except main characters--Hinata knows it's a secret

5.) Suga being Heir of Slytherin and stuff with the basilisk--secret except main characters--Hinata knows it's a secret

5.) A wand with a super shady past

Hinata is a fascinating character to write since he's super trusting but his knowledge of the world around him is so incredibly hit or miss that he has no idea how big the secrets he keeps generally are. Oikawa would strangle him.

Gary’s been flying on a high all season. Eleven senior team appearances, and there’s still half a season left to go. As much as his friends tease him about being pushed to right-back, he’s eighteen years old and he’s been playing the full 90 more often than not.

David’s only been played once, and now he’s come down from the Boss’ office with his lips pressed tightly together and tears welling up in his eyes. He shakes his head at Gary’s are you okay? look, just turns his back to the room and silently changes out of his training kit.

The out of town kids stay in digs that are walking distance from the Cliff, but for Gary (who is yet to pass his driving test) it’s two buses to get home. Becks normally walks with him and Phil to the bus stop, stays to chat with them while they wait, but today he’s hanging back while everyone filters out the dressing room. Gary shoos Phil ahead, says he’ll catch up or just see him back at home, and he goes to wordlessly sit himself down in the spot next to Becks.

When they’re finally alone, Gary bumps his shoulder against David’s and asks “What’d he say, Becks?”

“He thinks I’m not ready for the league,” says Becks, voice cracking. “Wants to put me out on loan.”

The Boss loves David, everyone knows that. He’s the golden boy, the one he hand-picked and brought all the way from London. The only reason he’s not been getting picked is because the team’s already got a number seven, and Eric’s too senior to get left out.

Nobody’s going to tell David to change position, to fall back to fill a gap in the first team like they had Gary. Because David’s not like Gary, he’s special. But he’s not Eric Cantona, not yet, and he’s not been getting enough minutes while he waits for his turn.

“Did he say which club?”

Becks nods. “Preston. Tier four.”

Preston is an hour and a half’s drive away, and Gary can’t drive.

“Fuck.”

“Yeah.” Becks drops his head into his hands. “D’you think this is it? Not everyone’s gonna make it, we know that.”

“If I can make it then you’re obviously gonna fuckin’ make it,” Gary says forcefully. “Becks, you know you’re good. You know there’s a place for you here. The Boss thinks you need to get more minutes, go out there and get more minutes. And when you come home, it’ll be me an’ you down that right hand side, yeah?”

Gary’s not very good at all this comforting stuff, but he awkwardly places an arm around David’s shoulders and gives him a squeeze.

David looks up at him with a watery little smile. “Will ya miss me?”

“Obviously.” Gary scoffs, then realises that’s probably too strong a statement, even for his best friend, so he quickly adds: “We all will.”

“I’ll miss you too, Gaz.”

“All of us?”

“Is that what I said?”

David’s landlady drives him up to Preston on a Saturday. For the first time in months, Gary’s not in the squad, so he takes the two buses over to go hover awkwardly in Becks’ bedroom while he stuffs the last of his things into an old backpack.

“Christ, Becks, you’ve got a lot of stuff don’t you? You’ve only lived here four years.”

Becks shrugs, looks over his shoulder to flash a grin at Gary. “I like nice things. You know, one good thing about this loan is apparently I’m gonna be gettin’ a match fee. £50, every time.”

Gary cringes internally when he does the mental maths on what he’s made from match fees so far this season. It still doesn’t make sense, feels like there’s been some kind of administrative error somewhere down the line that’s swapped his and David’s situations around.

“Becks…” he says weakly, desperately. He can’t tell him don’t go, knows he’s got no right.

David turns around to face him properly, a soft smile still on his face. “Yeah, Gaz?”

There’s nothing he can say, really, is there?

“Becks,” he repeats, and launches himself at his best friend, reaches out to cup his face in his hands and press their lips together, just for a second. It’s such a light brush, and it’s over so fast that he finds himself wondering if he even went through with it, if the last few moments were anything more than the product of an active imagination.

Except Becks is still there, warm eyes gazing into Gary’s, cheeks squashed under his hands.

He’s ready to jump back, to put his hands in the air and say it was nothing, it was just the heat of the moment, he was just thinking about missing his friend. He’s just his friend.

But then Becks says “Gaz,” like it’s something sacred, like he’s something sacred, and he closes the distance between them again, wraps his arms tight around Gary’s waist while he kisses him, kisses him, kisses him.

It’s only a few months, Gary has to remind himself on the bus ride home. Just a few months, and then he won’t ever have to leave again.

Aaaaa, beautiful lead color page! 😍 This flying cursed spirit suddenly reminds me of the one that both Nanako and Mimiko travelled on back in Volume 0. Also Suguru's flying manta ray cursed spirit in HI arc, when he rescued Riko :')

》 Meguna/Sukumi: “Nonetheless, a job half-done [will] cause problems.”

Here, Sukuna said, 「やはり何事にも仕上げは必要だな」 (yahari nanigoto ni mo shiage wa hitsuyō da na), which means as translated above. Official translations was weird, so I think it might have been a copy-paste mistake.

》 Yuuji: “This guy... won't die even if you kill him.”

"Even if you kill him" is the accurate translation.

This one's easy to miss but FYI, this phrase is most likely a callback to chapter 11 (see right panel)! Here, Yuuji uses the same words Sukuna had used on him when he was inside Sukuna's innate domain — 「オマエはつまらんな」 (omae wa... tsumaran na). In this instance, however, Yuuji added in, "really" — 「オマエは本当につまらんな」 (omae wa... hontōni tsumaran na).

Just a note that in this panel in chapter 11, Sukuna was belittling Yuuji and seeing him as inferior to Megumi Fushiguro.

Just wanted to explain that here, Maki (I'm assuming this is her dialogue) is basically meaning that it's weird seeing how good "Megumi" is at fistfights. It sorta implies that Megumi wasn't that good at hand-to-hand combat in her pov, but since right now he's possessed by Sukuna, "Megumi" is much better at it. In addition, the "Megumi's face" isn't a wrong translation but you can also say, "It's weird to see him good at fistfights with (using) Megumi's body."

》 Maki: “Even if he won't die, does that mean he can heal the wound [inflicted] from the "Split Soul Katana" using Reverse Cursed Technique..?”

Officials didn't include the "using RCT" part, which needed to be said.

》 Maki: “Yuuji... At any rate, our goal is to capture that thing even if it means killing (it), right?”

捕まえる (tsukamaeru) means to catch, arrest, grab, capture, or seize. Not stop. And FYI, Maki referred to Meguna/Sukumi as "that," or like Kenjaku once labelled Yuuji - "that thing".

Just wanna say that "Maximum Output" isn't a new type of CT by Uraume; 'cause I saw some people going crazy over it calling it a new Uraume CT. (I bet they're speedreaders lulz.) In this instance, Uraume basically exerts the highest (aka max.) output into their "Frost Calm" CT. Reminder that Gojo also used Maximum Output before, back in Shibuya... if anybody forgets.

》 Meguna/Sukumi: “Spectacular view! Spectacular view!”

Sukuna praised this view and said, 「絶景.. 絶景..」 (zekkei.. zekkei..), which is a flowery Japanese term that means an unsurpassably beautiful scenery. I just chose spectacular because it's another word for "extremely beautiful", so... yall can choose whatever you like I guess. It can be "cool," it can also be "awesome." [I just had a pop quiz on this kanji a week ago so it's still fresh in my memory LMAO.]

Sukuna said 「偏らせた」 (katayora seta) which means biased, leaned, prejudiced. I believe in this context, it just means that Uraume had focused their cursed energy on Maki.

》 Meguna/Sukumi: “Let's complete this body.”

Official translation is kinda alright. Meanwhile, what I've offered is just the literal translation and it sounds weird, lol, but it just means that the body is still incomplete - so they gotta do their stuff to achieve the desired, final form.

》 Meguna/Sukumi: “Get the "bath" ready.”

Yes, "bath" was in quotation marks. The raws were 「"浴"の用意をしろ」 (“yoku” no yōi o shiro). Now why am I imagining the "bath" to be with blood instead of water!

》 Meguna/Sukumi: “Just like always... [You're] meticulous.”

FYI, Sukuna used an idiom in this dialogue. He said 「相変わらず洋い所に手が届く」 (aikawarazu yō kayui tokoro ni te ga todoku), which literally translates to: "Just like always, your hand reaches the itchy areas/places."

The idiom here is 「洋い所に手が届く」 (kayui tokoro ni te ga todoku), and it means "to be extremely thorough" or "to focus on the little details." Simply put, this expression can be used for someone who is "meticulous"; one who is able to pay attention to every single detail, no matter how tiny.

Additionally, in the service industry, this phrase implies that one must have precise knowledge of the needs of the person that they want to serve. So the phrase can also be used when one wants to be "attentive to someone's every need/wish."

》 Meguna/Sukumi: “Look!! There was [someone/something]... From Harima!!”

The text in the JP raws was very vague; it was 「ほらいただろ!!! あの播磨の!」 (Hora itadaro! ! ! Ano Harima no!) which translates as above. Meanwhile, TCB translated this particular dialogue to "Told you!! He's like that guy from Harima!!"

In my opinion, I am leaning more to the official Viz translation because I looked up the "Harima statue" on Google and these particular statues (see below) bear a semblance with Yuuji's facial expression in the last page. And I think the statues actually make the most sense, especially with what Uraume said next about Yuuji's mouth, as compared to if they were talking about a Heian-era person whom only the two of them know. I don't think Gege would do us dirty like that for not getting the joke.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

There's always this point, especially during the climax of a longfic, where everything feels like it's reaching a breaking point? Like where all the little threads are coming together and a character realizes what the narrative has been pushing them towards this whole time (see also: the villain revealing their big evil plan , a tragic protagonist realizing there's no other way this can go, etc etc). I always love writing that scene the most because it's just me hopping up and down and shouting THIS IS IT THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL BEEN ABOUT THIS IS WHY I'VE CALLED YOU ALL HERE TODAY (with 'You' also including myself'.

12. If a genie offered you three writing wishes, what would they be? Btw if you wish for more wishes the genie turns all your current WIPs into Lorem Ipsum, I don’t make the rules

(1.) time oh god more time to write please just let me write i could do so much with more time

(2) would love, like, a Google catered specifically to fic writers. Like, it does me very little to know when the telephone was invented, I need to know when the majority of people had telephones in their homes/how having a telephone was considered socially/what the cultural zeitgeist around telephones were. preferably in pdf form

(3) I'd love, like, a 'finish chapter now' button. i wouldn't abuse it. i'd use it once per fic, max. but sometimes i've been through things SO MUCH in my own head that getting them on paper is THE WORST

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why?

(Discounting every OC, who is stressful in the sense that I am looking them in their eyeballs and asking WHO ARE YOU --) I'd probably have to say Harrier Du Bois, from the Disco Elysium series.

In short, he's an amnesiac alcoholic (recovering?) drug addict (recovering?) cop (alas not recovering) whose train of thought has 24 distinct voices. His sense of humor is spontaneous and it's so easy to lurch forward into the pit of 'random' humor (and so easy to make him less than a garbage fire than he really is). That he's also part of a game that lets you take a lot of distinct personality pathways also makes it tricky.

(Second place goes to Data from Star Trek, who canonically cannot use contractions and had me magnifying-glass my WIP trying to look for lost 'can'ts' and 'won'ts'.)

JAY I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED I RAMBLED FAR TOO LONG AS PER USUAL AND PUT ALL OF MY LIGHTHOUSE SERIES TRIVIA UNDER A CUT

hello everyone welcome to my playground. most of the trivia is character specific, so I've divided it by character and limited myself to MAX five bullet points Parker - I don't really have a specific sexuality in mind for most of the characters (Arthur + John are *handwaves* vaguely aspec but they're mostly just trying to get by, y'know) except for Parker being a gay man.

That does come up later, but there's some backstory stuff that I never found a good place to put in:

Parker never really had romantic feelings towards Arthur (though he does admit Arthur cleans up nice). Him becoming Arthur's BFF was as much a surprise to him as it was to Arthur. (I have a lot of feelings about gay men having very close platonic male friends)

Parker has had a few casual encounters up in Boston when casework takes him there. Occasionally he's tried for a more serious relationship, but (a) Boston's a little far, (b) the same casework woes that affect heterosexual detectives also affect homosexual ones, and (c) there's at least one very angry man in Boston who ardently believes Parker is an adulterer.

Arthur doesn't know and never knew. Parker's pretty sure he would be fine with it (though he wouldn't lie and say that bringing Arthur along to a gay club in Boston for case-stuff wasn't a litmus test), but anytime the conversation turned interpersonal and/or heavy, Arthur shut off like an unpaid electric bill.

Parker's family does know that he's gay (though they don't know he's alive, because he hasn't actually told them).

Parker never would have agreed to go up to Boston with Arthur and John during Lighthouse. He wasn't totally convinced that John wasn't some leech/vampire/demon until he saw John clutching Arthur's body in the 2nd fic, upon which he thought, oh shit, that's a whole-ass guy.

The most scared Parker has ever been was when he was on the boat after John jumped ship with Faroe. Parker can take danger and life/death situations; in a pinch, he can even take spooky occult shit, just don't make him take spooky occult shit alone.

John -

John uses a cane: partially for pain issues with his knees, mostly for balance. Trying to balance on his own causes more pain. John ignores this fact frequently.

The reason why John first felt terror when he looked at Faroe was because that was also Arthur's first feeling when he looked at Faroe, and John absorbed it during his time in Arthur's head.

John didn't totally believe that Parker was Parker when they first met until he came face-to-face with Kayne. He trusted Arthur was making the right decision.

Kayne -

Just. So much that I ended up cutting about the mechanics of the Dark World that will undoubtedly be rendered un-canon in a few months. In short - Kayne is the quote unquote "leader" of the Dark World, but it's not really fulfilling its intended purpose. He mostly uses it as a sandbox and lets the rest get overgrown. Everything he's built for the Scooby Gang is intentional.

Kayne can read everyone's thoughts while they're in the Dark World.

The only thing Kayne can't control are the black stars.

Kayne did control Arthur's body for a hot two weeks and went to Boston (he's always wanted to see!). Arthur is saved from police suspicion because Kayne took one look at Arthur's decimated body and went 'yuck' and fixed it up (only to be undone when he returned to the Dark World, for the same reason that Parker woke up in the office where he died and not Innsmouth).

I have a few askance thoughts for what Kayne did during those two weeks: Kayne had a nice steak dinner, Kayne stabbed someone to death in an alley, Kayne met a nice lady at a bar and had sex with her in the bathroom, Kayne got a suit fitted. There were other acts of incredible violence in Boston that week; however, due to how different they were, the police never put it together that it was One Guy.

Arthur -

Arthur will likely never know the two things that, if he discovered, would absolutely wreck him: that he unintentionally transformed a ship full of WWI sailors into cultists and led them to their deaths [after the events of the second fic, they'll crash their ship along a shallow reef] and Kayne's Sex/Violence Party While Wearing his Face.

Arthur's last conversation before he entered the Dark World was with the taxi driver he paid a fiver to guide him to his overgrown parents' house.

General/Themes -

Suffocation is a really strong through-line in the fic: by drowning [on blood or water], by strangling, by hanging. How much is too much is basically the subtitle of the series.

Artistry is also in question - people are constantly mistaking John for an artist, Kayne knows how to make clever chords but mocks the meaning of art, [REDACTED] is introduced through discordant flutes and drums, Parker can't technically play piano but jumps at the chance to murder the ivories with Arthur, Bella wanted to be a garment maker more than she wanted to be a mother, Faroe is first shown drawing shapes in flour on the boat.

Mayhaps the church with the glowing yellow stained glass window in the Dark World can be our lighthouse
