New theory
The ADA member to PM transfer will happen but they'll get their person back when Fukuzawa passes the leadership torch to Kunikida, who WASN'T the one who made a deal with Mori and hence is not technically obligated to keep that promise. Because that was obviously the plan all along right?

I think another reason why I don’t like or trust Natsume is highkey lowkey because Fukuzawa did not agree to the whole Tripartide Plan beforehand. He didnt agree to becoming the opposite to the Mafia, something that could’ve been fatal for them both, Natsume decided that for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God knows how Mori met Natsume or why he decided that a murderous underground doctor with that ability was the perfect person to overthrow the notoriously dangerous Mafia but it wasn’t Mori’s plan.
Fukuzawa and Ranpo had their detective thing before they met Natsume and it was him that directed Fukuzawa to Mori. I’m of the opinion that Fukuzawa didn’t know that Natsume and Mori were planning for the latter to because the PM head until later on when Yosano comes into the picture when Mori’s already a member of the mafia.
In the chapter/flashback above he’s a quack doctor, 4 years after the Great War ends he’s officially in the Mafia, the ADA is official and Fukuzawa knows about the Tripartide, but he fiercely opposes the immortal regiment idea.
Tumblr media
Sidenote: Somebody told Fukuzawa about Yosano’s whereabouts and what Mori was going to do with her. It was Mori who got her out of the room, it was Fukuzawa and Ranpo who intercepted them on the roof. Might’ve been Fukuchi, but that’s not been revealed and now he’s dead. My money’s on Taneda
Can you fucking imagine going to someone for a permission slip to run your detective business and the dude up and decides that you and your sixteen year old are the *perfect* people to oppose the Mafia in quasi-alignment with the government (who you previously killed for???)?????
Its likely that Natsume sent Fukuzawa to Mori bc he wanted the future ADA president and the future PM boss to have some idea of each other’s bloodlusts, strengths, personalities, convictions. But that makes him even shadier because its clear he knows Fukuzawa’s assassin past and whatever’s up with Mori. Also, why? Why make them go through the fake kidnapping thing together? Unless he was trying to forge some bond that would make it hard for them to go at each other’s throats in the future, eg: when Fukuzawa learns what Mori plans to use Yosano for. Because a diamond polishes a diamond.
The whole Tripartite Plan makes it so that the ADA, the government and the PM are in a permanent standstill because none of them can kill the other for fear of what would come next and Natsume executed it perfectly and shoved it onto Mori and Fukuzawa, the latter of whom this came straight out of left-wing and hit him like a freight train

I saw a cosplay (from @ hayleychristine_ on Tik tok) of Dazai in a Hunting Dog uniform.
And I'm just imagining how that could've happened.
What if when Dazai went to Cheif Taneda he pointed him not to the Agency, but to the Hunting Dogs?
It wouldn't even be that far fetched to let him join because Jouno himself is an ex executive of a criminal organisation.
They've hid his crimes even without perfect crime, who's to say they couldn't hide Dazai's.
This is all part of Fukuchi's whole plan to start a war to prevent one. Having someone like Dazai join his ranks definitely helps with strategy and such.
Tachihara is undercover at the Port Mafia and Dazai would be very good at helping him fit in... while trolling him.
Tecchou was genuine about the plaster on the nose as a disguise, Dazai was somehow both genuine and fucking with him.
To everyone Dazai just straight up vanishes for years and shows up in Yokohama hunting the Agency.
Imagine the "You fucked up Detective Agency" Chuuya rescue is the first time Chuuya sees Dazai in the present.
Man's definitely laughing at the ridiculous uniform, like oh I guess the government are letting in anyone these days.
But there's something off about Dazai that Chuuya can't put his finger on.... And than there's the reveal of the surgeries.
That Dazai was experimented on in the name of justice and he really went that far to be on the side that saves lives. Because he truly didn't have any other options.
Chuuya kicking his ass, Dazai revealing it was all because he knew Fukuchi was up to something. And yet he does genuinely like the Hunting Dogs.
Dazai drags Tecchou into his schemes to piss off Jouno. He and Jouno are too menaces and not allowed to go out unsupervised anymore.
Dazai thinks Teruko is both cool and scary. He takes Tachihara under his wing and makes sure he doesn't blow his cover.
And they like his dumb but smart ass self. Fukuchi though, Fukuchi is not included in that family.
Dazai realising why Odasaku sacrificed everything for his kids.
And declaring that Fukuchi won't take them all away from him.
So the Port Mafia's newest and one of its oldest traitors, Tachihara and Dazai band together against Fukuchi to expose him.
Dazai teaming up with the Agency after Fukuchi takes our Tachihara and Jouno. He talks down Tecchou and gets him and Teruko on his side.
He doesn't grieve Fukuchi but he does wish it didn't have to end like this.

You felt your body stiffen up as Ango approached you, your eyes glancing over at the doctor and her face had an “I’m sorry” expression written all over it. You internally rolled your eyes, you suppose it could not be helped. Dr. Stevenson put on her best smile and gestured to you. “Ango Sakaguchi, this is Miss (Name). She is one of my friends here from Yokohama.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss (Name).” Ango said, his tone dead as he extended his hand to you. You almost shook it but then your memory snapped back to William’s words…
“From what I hear you two have the same if not similar abilities”
If he touched you he could know your plans and previous conversations, so you settled on folding your hands in front of you and bowing your head. “It’s nice to meet you as well.”
You heard a hum from the government agent as he tucked his hand that he held out to you into his pocket, his eyes narrowed at you. You could could feel your palms grow sweaty under the gloves. There was a silent tension between the two of you as you figured out what he was trying to do and him figuring out that you know. This silence was broken by someone calling the doctor’s name and she was dragged off somewhere else to socialize.
“So what do you do?” You asked even though you fully well knew, better to be socialize rather than be suspicious.
“I do work for the government, and you?”
“Oh I work as a florist.”
“Your employment files said that you left that job a number of months ago.”
Your stomach hit the floor, had he been researching you? The government’s knowledge on members of the society should be limited, Dr. Stevenson, Victor, and Jane Austen at most. So the chances of him knowing you were a member of the Society was low, to him you should just be a friend of the doctor’s who was invited to this party like most other people in the room… unless someone told him.
“Well, I do mostly side gigs now, weddings, and what not-“
“I suggest you stop lying before you dig yourself a deeper hole. I know you’re a member of the society.”
You kept up your innocent face and began turning away from the large crowd, taking to the sides of the room. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Ango followed beside you, his eyes doting around the ballroom to make sure no one was watching the two of you. “Dazai told me about you after the Guild incident.”
You stopped in your tracks, if you didn’t feel sick before, you sure feel sick now. This man actually knew Dazai, most likely to the point where he would have no problem sharing details about others in his life, or there was a deal made, hard to tell when it came to the suicidal detective. You glanced around the ballroom as well to make sure no one else was watching you before you grabbed Ango by his suit jacket, and dragged him into the hallway. You glared up at him before doing a double look to make sure no one was there. “What did Dazai tell you about me?”
“That is information I’m not going to give for free. You tell me first, what is the society really up to tonight.”
“Do you actually think I will tell you that?”
“And do you think I would tell you what I-“
“Ango, I’ve been looking for you.” You couldn’t have been more relieved that when you heard the voice of William Shakespeare, who had just stepped into the hallway after you two. William smiled, looking at the two of you. “I believe a Mr. Taneda is looking for you.”
Ango sighed and stepped away from the two of you, right before he went back inside, he looked at the two of you, the light reflecting off of his glasses. “I suggest you don’t try anything, we will know.”
You and William stood there as Ango walked back into the ballroom. Then not a moment later, William grabbed you by your sleeve and began leading you away from the ballroom. “Hey what’s going on?”
“I just lied, I needed to get you away from them.” William’s smile and all but fades as he led you to the grand stairwell in the lobby of the hotel, which was mostly empty now, seeing as many of the guests were at events. “The auction was cancelled, they found blood splattered all over the displayed.”
“Who’s was it?”
“I have a hunch because Gaston’s communications went dark about forty minutes ago, right before the blood was found.” You felt like your body went completely numb, and you must have dazed off for a moment because the next thing you know William is snapping his fingers in front of your face. “Stay with me, it’s a shock factor, but knowing Gaston he will be alright.”
“What are we going to do now? What about Miss Jane?”
“I have the room number of where they presumably are staying, I am going to go try and sneak her out. Meanwhile you are going to go investigate the scene of the auction, figure what happened, and get that lot the Port Mafia wanted.”
“Huh? how did you-“
“Know?” William cut you off and chuckled as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a map. “I have been working in the organized crime business for quite awhile, and I’m an actor and you are not the best liar.”
“Oh fuck you.”
“Hm, I’m married.” William handed you the map and pointed to a room on the twentieth floor of the hotel. “That’s the conference hall where the auction was supposed to be. Emma and the others is going to be distracting our law enforcement friend, but I would say you have about thirty minutes.”
“Thanks, William.” You watch as William gives you a smile before he turns to go down another hallway at the top of the stairs. “Good luck.”
William stops to look down at you and gives you a smile. “Thanks, I’ll see you on the other side of this.”
————————
You made your way up to the auction hall. You slipped in and closed the door behind you, everything was dead silent, it felt almost far to quiet. You stepped down the aisle, between all the chairs, and put to the stage where they had the items on display, but most importantly the blood. It was splatted out over the stage, so you had to tie up your skirt so none would stain the white fabric. You slipped off your glove and kneeled down to investigate it. You ran your index finger through the red substance before bringing it to your nose and taking a smell and the pungent scent of iron hit you, definitely blood. You looked over the stage and then something caught your eye. You stood up and walked over to it, looking it over before bending down and picking it up with your gloved hand. It was a playing card it seemed, though some of the diamonds on it were off.
“You’re quite far from the party.”
You jumped up at the voice behind you, tucking the card into the neckline of your dress. You turned to see the blond man with the orange sunglasses and a long tan coat and a cap covering his head, Yukito Ayatsuji. You remembered him as the detective that William had pointed out that worked with the Special Division. He had followed you.
“You followed me.”
“That I did, good to know you can see the obvious.” He bit back sarcastically, he stepped onto the stage where you were, looking down at the blood at his feet. He hummed as his eyes landed back on you. “I’ll make you a deal, I’ll ignore everything I saw in here, which adds up to very incriminating evidence just so you know, if you do something for me.”
“If I refuse.”
“Well then, I’m sure the Hunting Dogs and the Special Division would love to see all of this.”
He was blackmailing you. You just wanted to punch him to wipe off that smug look on his face, but thinking logically if ignored everything he saw in this room you could get your hands on that book the Port Mafia wanted, but then you would be in his debt…
“So? I don’t have all night.”

Ango with a reader who acts like a mother
genre: fluff, kind crack
note: reader works with Ango
OK, let's imagine that you work in the Special Division Unusual powers:
EVERYBODY LOVES YOU (even Chief Taneda)
You're like a mother always caring, helping, and motivating everyone, and that's especially so with Ango since he's a total Workaholic idiot (with good reason). At first he didn't care as he "NeEdEd No HeLp" even with tons of dark circles under his eyes, a week without sleep and surviving on coffee and energy drinks from the machine.
He thought you too innocent a soul for such a dark and hard job, and he even doubted why Taneda employed you. But over time he realized that you were a savior by reducing the hated overtime and reminding them that they are human, not machines created by the government. That's when he fell in love
Now that you're in a relationship, know that it's almost the same dynamic as Moon and Sun ✨
This man will still play hard to get but secretly he can melt very fast.
Know that he loves everything about you. You are his safe haven where he can finally relax from all the weight.
a little protective even though he knows you're smart and can stand up for himself he'll still treat you like a helpless child (this includes keeping you away from such a homicide detective)
Will try to play cold and calculating at work but everyone knows………….that he's a total SIMP (and then it became a joke).
*sighs* Just be patient with this man.

When mori ougai requested an expensive commission to the detective agency and specifically asked for dazai everyone was tense.
They we're all nervously waiting for a trap especially dazai and yosano, yosano wanted to tell him to get stuffed and others not so polite words, it frustrated her that they have to play guest for the like of him and she still flipped him the bird to kunikida disaproval.
When after several tense weeks when they we're speculating what would the port mafia want from them and what unknown threat Yokohama was facing, it was hard even ranpo didn't know and he hated not knowing anything especially when it concerned possible threat to the agency, dazai tried asking ango while fukuzawa saw taneda but the government wasn't aware of any threat.
The worst in all that is that all the port mafia members we're suspicious akutagawa was avoiding them which atsushi found somehow more insuferable than before, kouyou and Verlaine both avoided the question and kouyou was always busy suddendly, she always take the time for kyouka, it hurt her to be avoided like that by her and chuuya didn't answer to dazai text or call which annoyed him.
Needless to say those weeks where shitty and when it was finally time to heard what they wanted from them well fukuzawa and kunikuda nearly let Yosano hit Mori with her cleaver, his smug smile didn't help in the slightest.
Dazai was immediately ticked off that something wasn't right when chuuya wasn't here so even if he acted obnoxious, he was even more thinking that something have happened to chuuya.
So he nearly shot mori when he announced that it was to plan a surprise party for chuuya.
Everyone though of it even more as a trap but then and to kunikida horror the two genius of the agency looked at each others and grinned.
While still smilling mori got the unpleasant impression that he would come to regret to ask for their help.
Which he did while they made for a great distraction they were way too enthusiastic about spending the mafia money yosano kun was gleeful in recommending all those expensive wine while the detective and little kyouka even commended sweet from the best europeans pastry and all the best and most espensive pastry shop in japan while dazai-kun commanded espensive crab ( he had to veto the canned crab and bandage) while the farm boy wanted beef.
And even fukuzawa-dono didn't help that he tried to get his executive a cat and steal the cat, he had to agree for the kitten, it was that or a cat onesie and while it would look adorable on chuuya-kun it don't fit his image as a fearsome mafiaso but judging by the look that dazai-kun had when he heard of this, he feel like chuuya-kun would get an animal onesie one way of another.
(and he had to slap himself to stop thinking of his dear elise in an onesie, stop it Rintaro the focus is on chuuya-kun not Elise-chan).
Of course chuuya got suspicious even when everyone tried to act as distraction, then when it was time for the party, the agency invited themself because they helped for the preparation after all, it's only polite to invite them
Even Q was relieved from their prison and Verlaine got out of their basement for this event.
Suprisingly dazai was one of the most involved in the preparation maybe too much for kunikida, atsushi and akutagawa sake especially when he have fight with Verlaine and kouyou on what chuuya would want and they were all shocked especially the detective by how much dazai know about chuuya .
In the end they we're all rewarded with chuuya bright smile.

This might be a stupid question but do we know the scope of there memory altering effects that the page (and by extension the book) has? Like the ada have memories of plotting the crime but they also knew that they were outside the door a moment ago, so do they just have two separate memories of sneaking into the building and plotting? It seems like everyone not part of the ada had their memories altered (I think?) so does it affect everyone not written about on the page?
The ADA knows they've been framed, they remember being on the other aide of the door, they remember getting the threat video from Gogol, but they do remember also kidnapping these political figures and Tanizaki remembers pressing the button. So yes I'd say they do have memories of both events, pre- and post-Page.
The Book can rewrite reality so long as it fits a certain narrative logic. I'd call it plausible deniability, for the most part: we didn't see who were under those hoods, someone had stabbed Taneda in that room and oops, you hadn't noticed that camera in the corner before, etc. Reality was different before though, so there are little gaps for those aware enough of the situation. I'd think it's one of the difference between the Book and the Page, in terms of power.
Some people do realize there is a problem going on! For example Lucy, who doesn't buy at all that the Agency (Atsushi) could be terrorists. The Port Mafia might be a criminal organization, but Mori wouldn't side with a group he thought was a danger to the city and its people. One problem though is that the operation surrounding the fifth incident from the Decay of Angels was kept on the down low: the general public hasn't seen the full picture, they haven't seen Gogol's video, they don't know that the Agency was hired and lured there and could not possibly have been in two places at the same time. Information manipulation is at the heart of this plan.
Even the chief prosecutor, who witnessed most of the events in real time by being a puppet to the Decay's plan and got shot by Gogol, didn't question the situation at all when Gogol told him to accuse the ADA. But that's not really that surprising, since he wanted to ruin them anyway...
Tumblr media
The reason why all these other government agents, who had started to suspect foul play in the government and should know better, don't seem to suffer the same double-reality issue is revealed a little bit later, so spoilers for upcoming anime events: on the Page, it was written that no one in the government or part of the law enforcements would believe the Agency to be innocent, no matter what they said or did.

Wait I'm super curious about your Chief Taneda being the final boss theory :0 (also gosh dang I would really love it if Chuuya left the PM, it would be so satisfying)
A lot of the credit for that goes to @originalaccountname but BASICALLY:
Ango mentions a "seventh" organization that works in the shadows, that aparently was responsible for erasing Dazai's reccord.
Tumblr media
One big theme in BSD is that access to information, above everything else, is what can beat any strategy. This organization seems to not just have access to information, but is actively controling it, meaning that it is extrememly powerful, and would be hard for even Dazai to go up against, because Dazai relies on having more info than the oponent, be it through observation or good old-fashioned breaking and entering.
Now, another big theme in BSD is that of human sacrifice, and the morality of it. The main message is "it's bad". It's why Mori is considered a true evil, what sets apart Dazai and Dostoyevsky, and what each character, in one way or another, struggles with. Characters who recognize the value of human life are uplifted, while characters who value ideas, say, government or organization or world peace or the like over human life are criticized. Oda's message to Dazai was to "save people".
And here comes Chief Taneda:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone who, we learn, does not value human lives as individuals, but rather as something to be quantified. If it's for the "greater good", he'll kill people that don't deserve it. It's why Ango doesn't trust him!
Now, if you would have picked any of the known characters to be part of this shady organization, who would it be? Plus, imagine the sheer power of someone who had Dazai's crimes erased and had him join the agency for some completely ulterior motive, for a plan that even Dazai couldn't predict. Dostoyevsky is supposed to be as smart as Dazai, but he's kind of losing to Dazai right now, and if we're gonna talk end-game mastermind villain, I would bet on the guy who managed to manipulate Dazai into doing something he thought was of his own volition.

My late night thoughts on Taneda Santouka :
@none-shall-caricature-me I wrote it in one-shot, my thoughts are ⤵️↩️⬅️↔️
It's almost 1AM, I'm writing this without rereading and without checking my information (only what I have in memory) it's only speculation and my personal analysis of the character but I think it's still interesting to read because imo he's one of the best characters in BSD
I'm also basing this on the little knowledge I have of the author
I'm going to start by speculating about his past, I think that about 15 years ago he was a soldier (35 yo) during the Great War, and before that he was already working for the government
Thanks to his ability, he arrested countless criminals (because he can know the nature of an ability if it is activated near him)
But this means that Taneda is above all an excellent strategist, and this is not surprising since he is the most rational character in BSD.
In the past he was probably the one who revealed the existence of the Book and how it worked in the government (and he probably regretted it)
And after that he was sent to war, (to avoid him trying to access the Book and in the best scenario case : die)
Because indeed, the main use of the Book is for oneself, to satisfy one's desires, create chaos <- which Taneda probably hates the most
Given his attachment to wanting to protect the city of Yokohama (granting Peace)
Indeed Mori shares this same desire, but Taneda is more rational because he cares for absolutely no one (unlike Mori who adores Elise) he is willing to sacrifice good people, for the sake of "the greater good", ready to sacrifice himself
I think it's also because Taneda Santouka has suicidal tendencies (personal headcanon) and even if it's not canon, I'm persuaded that he's the one who pronounced this sentence to Dazai ("what's the use of getting attached to things, because in the end we lose them") < something like that I can't remember
Indeed I think they met long before, because it's surprising that Dazai, in order to find a job, directly asked Taneda, he must have known him before (or else Ango forced Taneda to meet Dazai), I think it's both.
Why he has suicidal tendencies in my opinion (apart from the fact that he voluntarily let himself be stabbed by Sigma > I'm sorry but I'm convinced about this) because he is not tied down in anything.
Indeed, his ability allows him to see through the "protection" (aka abilities) of people, for him ability users are as clear as water
And I think Taneda got too attached to humans and their fragility and in the end he realised that he would always lose what he cherished.
I think during the war he had to lose fellow soldiers, I don't think that's what he was the most upset about, I think it's the fact that lives were wasted unnecessarily (he hates waste 'canon')
He's willing to sacrifice lives, but to a useful end, the war has sacrificed lives for no good reason.
That's probably why he decided to create (personal headcanon) the Special Division
He must have seen during the war how irrational and destructive the ability users were (used as a weapon)
And he founded this agency to regulate that.
He probably hates the war, because not only was he considered as cannon fodder (even if he considers everyone as such imo) but it also strongly damages the nature (the author had a deep love with the nature)
Taneda is looking for peace, solitude, to get away from people because it probably hurts him too much. That's probably why he likes to stay late at night (canon fact) to walk around, admire the landscape, and get drunk alone to forget (the author was an alcoholic and the character likes sake)
Taneda must be looking for that solitude away from humans, he's just looking for them all to be happy, without him in the equation.
And I think that's why he trusts Ango blindly and why they are so complementary
Indeed Ango is the exact opposite, Ango is attached to people and objects (he is canonically materialistic) while Taneda is very attached to immaterial concept (peace)
Taneda's ability is about the occult and the weirdness of abilities, Ango's power, even if it is based on memories, is much more concrete (object, human, + he is obliged to touch unlike Taneda)
Taneda shares the vision of utilitarianism : the happiness of all takes precedence over that of a few, Ango also shares this vision because he is rational, however his heart is in complete contradiction with those beliefs (Ango 'loves' humanity, Taneda is probably tired of it)
But Taneda saw something in Ango, he let him be his second in command at only 18 years old (I don't remember the exact source)
Taneda, a rational person, decided that an unexperienced young man should become his second in command.
Why did he do this ?
Because I think Taneda was jealous and hoped that Ango would failed.
Indeed, Taneda probably saw Ango's love for humanity/immaterial objects, the fact that it made him suffer, but despite everything he (Ango) persevered in this way
That's probably why he made Ango a triple spy, a sadistic desire to see this young man full of hopes confronted with reality.
That no matter how much you care about things, you will always lose them in the end. (Oda for example)
And what's the best part about it, Ango still has faith !
Taneda must have thought at one point "This young boy's steely determination, he's going to be a carrier of peace and deserves my place as a leader."
Because Ango is a good person, and even though he said he was not close to Taneda (which is a huge lie imo), he must have seen himself in Taneda.
Because for me, Taneda is just Ango who decided not to listen to his heart anymore.
That was the post, do what you want with it 👌

I'm not sure that much of this stuff is likely, but my ideal version of the events after the DOA arc is finally over would be to have an arc about the aftermath of All This Shit, including the ADA finally getting around to rebuilding themselves, the PM regaining the power they inevitably lost in the vampire apocalypse, and their little conflict with each other over Mori trying to take one of their members.
Meanwhile, Dazai, Chuuya, and Sigma are in the UK trying to get back to Yokohama, but can't bc 1 everyone is too busy trying to fix damages so ships and airplanes are down 2 they literally just destroyed Meursault. So they somehow find where Adam and/or Mary Shelly live and are crashing with them.
Then, Guild 2.0 arc. Hear me out, ok, there is a LOT of unresolved shit with the ex Guild members. Margaret still needs to wake up (and then have a really cool arc with Hawthorne to make up for her being fridged for male character development for so long), Fitz and Louisa still need to properly re-build the Guild, John still needs to destroy said new Guild, Herman still needs to inform us that he's even still alive and of where he and Moby Dick have been this whole time, Poe still needs to show us wtf he even did in the Guild, Lucy still deserves an actual arc of her own, and Mark, Tom, and Huck still need to do something to justify why they even exist in the story. So this can be an arc for that.
Then, FINALLY, we can get to the Order of the Clocktower. Obviously, this would come with new British characters and Agatha's reasoning for wanting the book. I'd bring back that whole weird tiger beetle thing with the Order trying to kidnap Atsushi and finally explain wtf is up with that. Also at this point the little prison breakout trio would be back in Yokohama (+ Sigma would oficially be part of the ADA), so Agatha would probably want them back as well.
Of course, the Order is a part of the British government, so they can't just grab all their members and move into Yokohama like the Guild or the Rats. It would be better for Agatha to do something like send a small group into Yokohama and not tell anyone that they're part of the Order.
This arc could end with the ADA exposing to the government that they're part of the Order, which could lead into a mini arc centered around government ppl like Ango, Taneda, Tsujimura, and whoever is left of the Hunting Dogs in the government, trying to deal with this gigantic problem.
This is all just a general idea though, and it doesn't cover a lot of the stuff that eventually needs to be addressed, including that there are probably more ppl wanting the book now that Ranpo told the whole world about it.

Hey did you see the new official art? Ango is placed right up there with the other Decay of Angels members! I might be seeing too much into it but ahjfjskl it's something lol (There is one more person there, might be Taneda not so sure about it if it is Taneda does it mean entire government is involved in the plan and Ango is the face of the operation)
//fivekrystalpetals
I actually haven't seen the new official art skfklsfdjfd
I never know where to even find the official art lol. Does it get posted to the authors official account on twitter??
Either way, Ango with the DoA members is very interesting, because in the context of the story right now (without all of the theories and everything lol) it doesn't seem like Ango would really have any business being drawn with the DoA members.
Unless it's supposed to showcase government vs. criminals or something.
The idea of the whole government being involved is interesting too omg

So like… does Fukuzawa even have any friends outside the Agency? What i’m thinking is that his military schoolmates either died at war or are scared of him. I’m sure he has old government dudes who recognise him from his Silver Wolf days, and new city officials who assist him in the Agency but does he have a friend? He’s fourty-five the only adults we see him talk to are either his enemies or Taneda and Natsume who are both… yeah. All i’m saying is that no wonder he can’t kill Mori and was glued onto Fukuchi for so long

𖧷 罪の天使
warning *angst (say it aesthetically, I dare you), profanity, detailed mentions of violence, (holy shit what is this, evangelion?) Reader slowly losing themself, character death, long-ass description and not so long fic (as if you never read a fic on ao3), blood 😀
content/lyric used * 「重ねて羽根を濡らして、落ちる天使愛の鎖」 Wetting these piled up feathers. Are a falling angel's chains of love
Pairing *Ango Sakaguchi x reader (trivia-kinda: youne writes about him alot in the NSFW blog) [Pla or Rom: questionable, depends on how you think about this]
further information * [gn!reader] [Mobius's lab event] [Third-person POV, or reader is not addressed as you, but as them]
Klein's note: I personally this fic is fitting better with 'The Day you're gone with the Star' song, but i'll do whatever Mobius-san commands...
Tumblr media
They were nothing but an 'angel' without it's power. I thought it would be better for you guys to take care of them?
—God of Time, himself
That day, someone sent the letter with a person sleeping inside a box. No one know who sent the whole thing. Everyone in the headquarter is confused, or concerned is fitting way better. Too many questions clouding their head, especially Ango. God of Time? It's strange to hear something like that.
The person inside the box woke up right when Ango about to lift them up. (e/c) eyes flutters and opened, met the onyx eyes above them. Even he could tell at the first glance, they're abandoned purposely. Someone who named himself as God of Time must be the one who did it.
They didn't remember anything including their name, but one thing. Their goal. But whenever Ango asks them what is their goal, they only shook their head. So Ango asked them, "Would you like a name?" Lifting their head to met his, then simply nodding.
"In return, you have to tell me everything you know" they nodded. Naïve, he thought at the moment.
Y/N... That's a good name.
"Y/N, what about that?" You nodded excitedly. "Yes," they answer his questions with delight filling your chest. Y/N started to tell everything they knows, excluding their goals. Ango choose to forget about Y/N's goal, thinking it won't be really important.
Tumblr media
Everything went peacefully, Y/N is well received on that division although they're not an actual member. They do have an ability, making a chain and fire from their blood. But Y/N decides to not use it anymore.
Y/N is really close with Ango, since he's the one who gave them a name to call. They instinctively protects Ango since Y/N is also granted with excellent physical ability. Meanwhile Ango himself prevent you to do anything dangerous to Y/N themselves nor Ango.
Seems like a happy ending one, huh?
Today, Y/N wildly attacked and almost killed the whole division themselves. Almost everyone beside Ango. They just simply knock him off, making him can't even lift a finger.
They walked calmly among fire, blood, and scream of the death. Cynical smile is decorating their face, along with anyone-but-her blood. Their step stop in front of a weak and half awake body, sitting there for only god knows how long, fighting the pain that is spreading on his body. A chain is held tight on Y/N's hand. They lower their body, smiling at Ango.
"You know why am I leaving you here, struggling between dead and life right?" Ango only looking down, refusing to see them. The smile on Y/N's face slowly fading. Y/N's right hand, the one that holding the chains touched his jaw. Forcing him to look directly at them.
"You shouldn't ignore someone's question right? An-go~" they playfully spelling his name. Ango knits his eyebrow, looking at Y/N with disappointed look. "I don't know about that, but I'm already suspecting you for a long time. You purposely avoid Taneda because you don't want your ability to be revealed. And after you're doing these whole things, I started questioning you. Why did you want to eradicate us? We're the government organization, you should've avoiding us" Y/N smiled.
"Domino effect. My goal is to annihilate this fucked-up world. Starting from this city, and starting from the Tripartite Framework. There's also the untold rule of Domino effect, put down the biggest or most dominant thing, the greater the effect. After i eradicating the Division for Unusual Ability, there is no longer peace for Yokohama. Both Armed Detective Agency and Port Mafia will lose their balance. After Yokohama had fallen down, places with numerous people with ability also losing their balance. And there will be commotion between ordinary people and the gifted one. Since there, I can just watch the world burned itself."
The Cynical smile on Y/N's face is back again, still looking at Ango. "But I must say thank you first, since without any new and memory, I can't unleash my full ability" They stand again, not cutting any eye contact with Ango. "Let's say, the painless—fast death is my thank you gift. Goodbye".
Y/N are using their ability again, a countless chain is surrounding Ango. And when they pull the chain, the chain around Ango is brutally crushing his whole body with a single pull. His blood staining their whole body. It was fast, as Y/N promised to him. Even Ango didn't have time to think.
They raised the their right hand, touching their face, feeling his blood slowly mixed with a crystal clear drops of tears. Y/N is not sure with their own ambitions now, was it too much? They think. But Y/N's desire burns once again, remembering their family, dearest friend, even the loved one dies from one's greed.
"Ahaha... Yes, there's no turning back."

Recap on the Book (+ a theory on Atsushi)
The Book is an element that received little attention compared to the character drama in Bungo Stray Dogs, but it's actually the element instigating it, as the thing almost everyone desires. This time, I want to make a recap on it, and take a look on an interesting theory regarding the connection between it and Atsushi.
The first one to mention it is Fitzgerald. He describes it as pretty much Aladdin's lamp from the original fairy tale: something to make all wishes come true, in his case the resurrection of his daughter. Appearently, Atsushi is the 'guidepost' to the Book, and that's why there was such an hefty bounty on him at the start of the series. Whatever that means, we are all still waiting to know.
It also mentions that it is 'impervious to fire and all abilities'.
But Fitzgerald was in cahoots with two other amiable fellows who were after the same thing: Fyodor Dostoevsky and Agatha Christie. While the latter has not appeared since except for Dead Apple, the former has given us new infos on the prized Book.
He too wants to use the Book, but in his case, the goal is a little more lofty: he wants to recreate the world, one without the 'sin' of ability users. So, the Book's powers aren't limited to just bring back the dead, they really have a reality-altering scale.
Tumblr media
(translation by @akai-koutei)
At the start of the Decay of Angels arc, Chief Taneda gives Ranpo a few more informations about our object of interest.
It is in the hands of the government, and it has been studied, via a single page extracted from it, that holds the same power as the whole Book (like a Death Note).
Moreover, we find the first limitation to the power: 'the written content must conform to the rules of karma'. In other words - and we're going deliciously meta here - it must have narrative consistency, unlike the 'real world' in which accidents of any kind and without any meaning happen all the time. Of course it does! If a book had inconsistent plot development and characterization, wouldn't we all be complaining about bad writing?
Lastly, it's suggested that it was created by an ability user, which set its rules to prevent excessive and senseless destruction.
This rule begs the question - do Fitzgerald or Fyodor know about it? 'A girl suddenly springs back to life' doesn't have much narrative consistence, and neither 'all Ability users suddenly vanish'. A way to work around this limit would be rewrite history itself: Fitzgerald's daughter never died/Abilities never existed in the first place. It would erase the timeline in which these events would be impossible, and create another in which they have consistency.
This would also be the reason for the initial plan of the Decay of Angels, using the page to depict the ADA as terrorists ... but before that, they had to 'create' their crimes by killing relevant people that had spoken against the Agency, giving them plausible actions and motives.
Tumblr media
It also fits with the Sky Casino: a building that was woven back in time with a complete backstory, instead of just popping out from nothingness. Still, this also show us that there's no need for the details to be absolutely accurate: Dazai managed to figure out that the building had been written from the Book because the 'top secret' details of its creation didn't exist in the first place. Still, these details are ones that do not 'disturb' the flow of a story: it's a freaking flying casino, who is going to think about the funds? Just enjoy the story!
Tumblr media
But then we find an outstanding exception: Sigma. A whole human being brought into existence by the Book, without any past that he can remember. He appeared three years ago, in a desert, with only the clothes on his back and a train ticket. No backstory from him.
How was this possible? It's not very narratively coherent, a person popping into existence.
Well, we must consider that we know only what Fyodor says about it. He might be withholding information from Dazai and the audience, or even lying to confuse his opponent; or maybe he doesn't know the answer himself. He recruited Sigma, likely after hearing about his Ability, but did not create him personally.
Maybe Sigma's 'parent' actually did have a backstory and purpose planned for his 'character', but for some reason, they weren't received. Or maybe they knew some trick to circumvent the limitations of the Book. Maybe the government was experimenting with it, and for some reason someone was like 'hey, let's see if we can make a person pop out in the desert, without anyone being around to check if it happens or take care of the eventual human being!'.
Yeah ... this part is rather confusing. I look forward to an explaination on Sigma's origins.
Tumblr media
The last time that the rules of the Book are mentioned, is to show us a way to circumvent them. Fyodor had written that 'no police officer will believe the Agency's innocence' ... but he didn't factor Tachihara in. As a member of the Hunting Dogs, he is a police officer; but during his infiltration of the Mafia, he acquired this second identity. He is an officer, and at the same time, he is not. As soon as he inquires other mafiosi on the matter, he becomes clear to him the ADA's guiltlessness, in which he couldn't believe when talking with the othe Hunting Dogs.
And Ranpo in later chapters used a similar strategy, bringing his proofs to a group of journalists to make the masses think; and in turn, this divided the police between those who still obeyed the rule and those who adopted a new perspective.
The human ability to put ourselves in other points of view is the uncontrollable variable that can break the Book's powers.
(By the way, I wonder if that was actually Fyodor's plan. He seems too smart and well-informed to not take this possibility into consideration. Considering that the clashes among the police resulted in riots and chaos; and he commented earlier, talking to himself, that he didn't create the 'perfect' plan his colleagues required because that would be boring ... maybe this is his own plan to undermine Fukuchi's power and get him out of his way, to be the one who will actually puts his hands on the Book?)
After that, an interesting comment was made: the Decay of Angels planned to use the Book 'the next full moon'. It's uncertain if it's because it can only be used in this time frame, or if it can be just be found (in both cases, the Book has another rule that limits its use)
The last time any piece of the Book made an appearence, it was with Fukuchi dangling the famous page, and the possibility of rewriting it, in front of Atsushi and Akutagawa; but that was also the first sound defeat for the Shin Soukoku. Fukuchi still has the page, and now our hopes reside in Tachihara, currently about to face him.
Then, there is supplementary material: the BEAST AU. I haven't read the light novel or manga, so any information I can provide is from the wiki and @looking-for-stray-dogs 's summary.
In this AU, Dazai has managed to obtain the Book, but thanks to his Ability, he retains his memories even in different universes. But didn't Fitzgerald say that the Book is immune to all Abilities? Or only those which try to destroy it?
Still, Dazai used the Book to create his own pet universe - kind of like Fyodor wants to do, but with a much more personal goal: creating a universe in which Odasaku lives. This appearently can happen only if he never becomes Dazai's friend.
However, the definition of 'make what is written in it into reality' is not exact: it is more like a 'container' for every possible universe in existence, and what is written in the pages will not 'rewrite reality', but 'call forth the universe in which it happens'.
Think of it like Michelangelo's ideas about sculpting: the statue is already in the block of stone, the artist merely brings it out.
Beast!Dazai then mentions another clause: if three or more people know the truth about a world created by the Book, the stability of said world gets compromised, and it gets higher possibilities of ceasing to exist. Which is pretty much what is happening in the canon manga.
And this is all we know insofar. Is it enough to make theories? Of course! Anything is enough to make theories!
One I've seen circulating, and that I really like, is 'Atsushi is a creation of the Book'.
Supporting it:
• Atsushi is considered so valuable because he is a 'guidepost' to the Book; it would actually make sense that someone created by the Book mantained some connection to it.
Contradicting it:
• There already is someone who was for sure created by the Book: Sigma. And he is already in the Decay of Angels: if all sentient beings created by the Book mantained a connection to it, wouldn't that mean that they don't need Atsushi? Instead, not only they are still looking for tiger boy, but Sigma needed to threaten and use his Ability on Taneda to find out just where one page was.
Solution: maybe Atsushi was specifically written to be a 'tracker' for the Book, while Sigma wasn't?
Supporting it:
• Atsushi doesn't have any certified past, someone threw him on the streets without giving him anything that could lead back to a birth family. And appearently, nobody noticed someone had a suddenly missing child, or tried to investigate on the abandonment of a toddler.
Contradicting it:
• Who the hell creates a supernatural being that can lead to an even more supernatural book and then throws him in the trash?!
Solution: who the hell creates a supernatural being who can exchange informations and throws him in the desert?! Whatever the keeper of the Book is on, it can't be legal, or even well-cut for the matter.
More seriously, we are told that Atsushi's parents abandoned him, but it was the Headmaster that said it, and he's not the most reliable guy around. Atsushi not only does not have any proof for that, but he also has a faulty memory due to trauma: if he forgot Shibusawa, what else could he have forgotten?
Supporting it:
• The Book can appearently be used - or maybe retrieved, the phrasing is a bit ambiguous on that - under the full moon. Atsushi's Ability is called 'Beast Beneath the Moonlight', and he himself is called a 'weretiger', derivated from 'werewolf', a creature that has a traditional connection to the full moon.
Contradicting it:
• It might be a coincidence?
Supporting it:
• Shibusawa took a very specific interest in him, even going to the point of torturing him to make the 'Beast under the Moonlight' manifest
Contradicting it:
• Shibusawa was obsessed in finding the 'ultimate ability'. The fact that appearently Atsushi has it does not mean that it is related to the Book, or even that it is an objective statement.
Supporting it:
• Fyodor took a very specific interest in him. He was the one who directed Shibusawa to him, as far as six years ago, when Atsushi likely hadn't manifested his Ability. So, how did this rat, who is very interested in the Book and probably spent a lot of time finding ways to get it, know about him?
Contradicting it:
• Dazai appearently knows nothing about it. Considering how smart and careful he is, it would be expected that he did his research on why everyone was so fixated on the Agency's newest recruit. Instead, he looked genuinely shocked when he's told about Sigma's birth. So, whatever Atsushi's connection to the Book is, it's not of that kind. Moreover, Fyodor hasn't had a single interaction with Atsushi insofar. Wouldn't be more logical trying to somehow secure his willing cooperation if he needs it? From his side, Atsushi doesn't seem to know how he looks like (when he thinks about him, the face is always obscured), nor he acts like he vaguely recognize the name before - something that instead happened with Shibusawa
Possible solution: maybe Dazai isn't God the All-Knowing for once in this manga?! Or maybe he was lying to keep a margin of advantage. And Fyodor rarely acts in a very direct way, usually putting other people and convoluted plans between himself and anyone who could be involved. Sending Shibusawa to Atsushi might have been such a case.
Contradicting it:
• Fukuchi has no problem attacking Atsushi. The whole Decay of Angels's plan put the life of Tiger Boy in danger multiple times. An odd thing to do, if they goal is something that can be reached only through him.
Possible solution: they know he has regenerative abilities on a nearly Koro-sensei level? I admit, I'm not very sure on this point.
All in all, I think it's a very plausible theory. And do we want to talk about the drama character development it would bring about? Atsushi already questions his right to live, how would knowing that he had been created for some purpose decided by someone else impact his worldview?
In conclusion, I think that the Book is a very interesting, mysterious element, and I really look forward to see if it will be used, by whom, and why Atsushi seems so connected to it.
Thanks to anyone who bothered to read my ramblings!

Beast Translation Update!
Hey! Me again. Something’s come up so my typesetter won’t be free until the 22nd of December. I’m sorry for the delay and would like to thank everyone for your patience. In the meantime, under the cut are chapter summaries I wrote for those that really want to find out what happened! Sorry they’re pretty long for summaries since I suck at being concise, hope you enjoy!
Beast Chapter 8 Summary [Title: The Beast Called Myself]
Oda asked Akutagawa to babysit the kids he looks after for three days while Oda is away on a business trip. Akutagawa is very upset at this, even more so when Oda refers to him as the eldest of the kids he looks after.
On the first day of babysitting, Akutagawa uses his ability to play with the kids. The second day, he visits Sakura’s class and helps motivate her to answer the teacher’s question.
On the third day, Kousuke cooks a meal for Akutagawa and asks him to give him combat training. Kousuke explains that he wants to get stronger to join the detective agency like Oda, who he says is like an older brother to him. He pulls out a gun that he bought himself and Akutagawa is surprised that a criminal would sell a gun to a child.
The combat training begins and Akutagawa is very clearly winning the fight. Akutagawa then puts a gun up to his own head but Rashomon blocks all the bullets. He says that he hates guns, explaining that they cause people to grow ignorant, which he says is the reason his friends were killed. He uses his ability to destroy the gun and tells Kousuke that if he ever steps foot in front of Akutagawa with a gun again, he’ll kill him.
Oda returns from his business trip and apologizes for ‘leaving the dirty work’ to Akutagawa (i.e. fighting Kosuke), since Oda says that if he were to fight Kosuke, it would only ‘fuel his admiration’. Akutagawa says that Kosuke isn’t cut out for fighting and would be better off becoming a chef. He says that Kosuke is too willing to sacrifice himself for his younger siblings to survive in a heartless world. Oda then gives Akutagawa some of his wisdom, telling him not to chase ‘the beast of yourself’.
Akutagawa asks if this was all set up just for Oda to try to convince him to control himself when fighting ‘the man in black’. Oda denies that though. Akutagawa finished the conversation by saying he was wrong about Kosuke. Oda responds with ‘I hope so’.
Back in the cafe under the ADA, Akutagawa calls Kunikida to try to get out of doing any paperwork when the door swings open and Atsushi enters.
Beast Chapter 9 Summary [Title: Encounter, Part 1]
Atsushi tells Akutagawa that he was asked to deliver a letter to the president of the ADA. However, he got lost on the way and it started raining so he had to take shelter in the cafe. To Atsushi’s relief, Akutagawa tells him that the ADA is on the fourth floor of the building they are in.
Atsushi puts three sugar cubes into his coffee and says that his coworkers always tell him it’s too much. He says he can’t help it due to the place he grew up. ‘An orphanage’ says Akutagawa. Atsushi asks how he knew that. Akutagawa explains that he grew up in a similar environment. Atsushi seems distraught as he says that the natural instinct to use a lot of sugar is probably something that he’ll have for the rest of his life. Much to Atsushi’s surprise, Akutagawa replies by saying he uses four cubes of sugar in his tea.
Atsushi asks if Akutagawa knows about how everyone was always fighting to get their hands on pencils and notebooks. Akutagawa says ‘of course’. He then asks if Atsushi knows about chocolate bars. Atsushi responds with “Of course, it’s a type of currency, isn’t it? There’s relatively a lot, but everyone always wants it, so its value remains constant. Therefore it naturally became used as currency.”
Akutagawa says that at one point, for a while he ate nothing but chocolate bars and then collapsed due to malnutrition. Atsushi bursts out laughing at this.
Atsushi tells him that this is the first time he talked about this. He then asks Akutagawa to deliver the letter for him and asks what his name is. They exchange names.
Akutagawa then asks who sent the letter and Atsushi says it’ll be clear who sent it when the letter is opened. Akutagawa says to be safe, he has to check what’s in the letter in case it’s something dangerous.
Inside the letter, Akutagawa finds a photo of Gin. He asks Atsushi if he knows the person in the photo, Atsushi says he does but is confused as to why the boss put a photo of her in the letter. Akutagawa’s rage is building as he asks Atsushi to tell him where Gin is. Atsushi says he can’t tell Akutagawa where she is, since there is a rule in his organization stating that if you ever find someone searching for Gin, you must kill them. Akutagawa then announces that Gin is his little sister. Atsushi doesn’t believe him, saying she doesn’t have any family. The two begin fighting. They’re pretty evenly matched and eventually Atsushi decides to leave. He says he has to report this to his boss and ask him why there was a photo of Gin in the letter.
Akutagawa tries to stop him from leaving but some mysterious attack renders him unconscious.
Beast Chapter 9.5 (Title: Encounter, Part 2)
Akutagawa thinks about his past, when Dazai told him that he would keep his sister until he figured out what his weakness is. The words of Oda also echo in his mind: “Don’t chase the beast of yourself.” He also tells Akutagawa that he ‘will surely be given a chance for redemption’.
Akutagawa then wakes up and notices his wound is gone. Yosano tells him to follow her and the two head to a room with some of the other ADA members and a projector.
A video is played on the projector of a meeting between Chief Taneda and Dazai Osamu. Kunikida says that Ranpo found out that this video was taken by the government and Tanizaki then says that Oda snuck in and got the video, saying the dangerous mission took Ranpo and Oda three days. Kunikida explains the science behind how the video was secretly obtained using luminous flux waves.
Kunikida then plays the video, in which Chief Taneda says that he heard that Dazai assassinated Mori, Dazai responds with “That’s quite the troublesome information network you have”.
Akutagawa says that he recognized Dazai to be ‘the man in black’. He asks Kunikida to tell him where Dazai is. Kunikida says that he’s on the top floor of the Port Mafia headquarters but explains to Akutagawa that getting to him is impossible. He tells Akutagawa that if he goes, he’ll die. Akutagawa says that it doesn’t matter. He tells Kunikida about the photo of Gin in the letter Atsushi gave him. He says that since Atsushi is reporting to Dazai that Akutagawa is looking for Gin, then Dazai will know he’s coming, causing him to reinforce security and disappear. Alternatively, Akutagawa thinks Dazai might threaten to kill Gin. Tanizaki tells Akutagawa to wait, saying if he goes alone he’ll be killed. Akutagawa shoves him and leaves anyway.
A group of armed men spot Akutagawa approaching and are ordered to kill him.
Beast Chapter 10 (Title: Scheme)
Akutagawa begins infiltrating the port mafia headquarters. He remembers his first meeting with Dazai, who called him ‘an unintelligent, dangerous animal’ and he thinks about his friends calling out to him for help. He demands to be told where Dazai is. Kyouka then makes an appearance. Akutagawa tells her to get out of the way and that even if she’s a little girl, he’ll kill her if needed. Kyouka says no matter what she’ll silence Akutagawa to protect ‘that person’ (Atsushi).
Dazai asks if Atsushi knows who the intruder is, he tells him about their encounter in the cafe. Atsushi requests permission to ask Dazai a question. He asks if it is true that Akutagawa is Gin’s older brother. Dazai says it is true. Atsushi then says “You wanted the Mafia headquarters to be attacked, didn’t you?”. Dazai says he did and then begins a monologue about how the smallest things can lead to large natural disasters, implying that this is all a part of a much larger picture.
Akutagawa and Kyouka continue fighting, Kyouka talks about a time when she tried to leave the port mafia, a person was sent after her to kill her and she says that person was much stronger than Akutagawa. Akutagawa remembers when Oda told him that “when it comes to physical combat, your body’s frailty comes to light” so Akutagawa decides to ‘turn this fight into a battle of abilities’. Akutagawa seems to think he’s about to win when Atsushi comes to kyouka’s rescue. Kyouka tells atsushi that she felt if she didn’t fight Akutagawa, he’d go up against Atsushi and one of them would die. Atsushi reassures her that he won’t die, that he’ll never let her be alone in the darkness. Akutagawa remarks that “there are kind hearted murderers
huddled together in this organization of darkness”. He says the thought could move him to tears, however he did research about Kyouka and Atsushi, calling them ‘the murderer of 35 people’ and ‘the white reaper of the port mafia’. He says that “ No matter how much you grasp onto each other with your bloodied hands, you will never be able to feel one another’s warmth”. Atsushi then responds by saying “That might be true. But even if that’s the case, then you and Gin san will never be able to feel one another’s warmth either”

hi i was hoping if you could do a reader x dazai fic where they date in the port mafia then work at the ADA together! thank you so much! 💞
Hi!  Thank you for requesting! The story was getting a bit long so I decided to just show their first interactions after being reconciled instead of working together. I hope you like it!
(Also I haven’t used Tumblr since ages I have no idea how to navigate things whoops)
It wasn’t easy being a spy, but somehow you’ve managed it and came out of it in one piece. Alive. Well, barely, considering the day you handed in your resignation letter you were shot in probably ten different places. Flesh wounds, but all the same, it was a near death, and they weren’t letting you off so easily.
And apparently, more so today, because as you swung out of bed, the ghost of fiery pain shot up your back, where some lackey or another apparently decided it was a good idea to knock you out with a blow to the back of the neck, except they missed. So now you were left with crippling pain down the column of your spine, and by God did it hurt.
It took about twenty minutes of wincing and gritting your teeth, all the while grasping the bedframe so hard your knuckles turned white, and stars erupting behind your eyelids, but eventually the pain subsided, and the ability to be able to breathe without a new jolt of pain was as much of a relief as a breath of fresh air after submerging in water. One of the training methods in the Special Ability Department, you recalled, for combatants.
Combatants. The title caused a memory to surface; your colleague, a bespectacled and dodgy man by the name of Sakaguchi Ango. He was one of the government’s spies too. Where was he now?
The ten paces from your bed to the bathroom was enough for about a thousand possibilities to emerge. Shot. Killed. Tortured. Hung. No; they didn’t do that anymore. Too old-fashioned, apparently. But still a chance. Or he survived. Who knows?
   What did it matter, anyways?
Not then, and certainly not now. Once you’ve reported back to the Department, you decided to quit, having had enough running errands for the government which was half-assed anyways. Thankfully, Taneda-san was understanding, and kind enough, to write you a reference for the Armed Detective Agency, ran by a former colleague of his who also served the government once-upon-a-time. You might find it quite suitable for you, he said.
And so that was where you’d spent about half a year or so, fumbling with the ropes but slowly managing now. It was the next thing on the agenda too, after gulping down a cup of steaming black coffee, which you’d learnt in the mafia the best way to spring oneself straight into action. Boarding the train, milling amongst about a few hundred people in the subway station, before emerging and heading to the brown brick building.
The normality of it all was honestly absurd.
Just a few months ago, you were sitting in an office, acting second-in-command for one of the five Executives under Mori’s command, Ozaki Kouyou. Back then, the documents and lists detailing Port Mafia-owned warehouses, targets and whatever that needed to be done was the norm. Planning an assassination on someone, or taking stock of explosives in a warehouse, or riding the limousine with Kouyou to another meeting, was the norm. That was the pace of life, along with the discreet smuggling of information back to the government.
There was another thing that was the norm, you reflected as a hand grasped the shower knob, turning it almost absent-mindedly, allowing the shower of warm water cascade down your body, which reminded you of his touches. Stolen kisses behind closed doors, a brush of fingertips on skin during meetings, that knowing look across the room when it was time to report back to Mori.
It was probably the steam coming from the water, but nonetheless you could feel slight heat creeping up your cheeks as you relieve those memories, before deciding that scrubbing them away along with the lingering sleepiness was probably the best course of method. There was, after all, no point in thinking about the past. Anyone from the mafia was the enemy now, and he was no exception. You shouldn’t let your heart soften just because of one single man, and there was no way you were about to start.
    Still…
The relationship was nice while it lasted, no doubt, and you reflected upon this fact as you watch lemon-scented foam wash down the drain. But just before you were the target of everyone — well, nearly everyone’s — bullets, the young executive had disappeared. After the death of his best friend, or so it was rumoured, a man called Odasaku. You didn’t remember his actual name, he was referred to as such by too many people. That was probably one day before you handed in your resignation letter. Not that you meant for it to happen; that was pure circumstance. A short while before that, Sakaguchi Ango also disappeared.
Now, whether that was pure chance was another matter. All you knew was that you definitely did not plan on resigning in the midst of that chaos; for all you knew, that was probably fate playing games with you. Unfortunately, because of, ah, previous entanglements and relationships with Dazai, you had somehow became the centre focus of practically every die-hard mafiaso on that day you stood in front of Mori in his office, which was probably the reason why they were all so trigger-happy to send you off to an early grave. Not because of suspected disloyalty, though some might have came to that conclusion (obviously, those who had more brain-cells), but it was highly likely that they decided to shoot you due to having a relationship with the escaped Executive.
Well, let them doubt and plot and think to their deaths all they want. Even I’m curious as to where that bastard is.
Anyways. There was no time to be wasted thinking of trivial things and driving oneself up walls speculating. You watched as the last remnants of water drip down to the marble tiles, before stepping out to the chilly autumn air and shivering in the cold. Wrapping a towel around yourself, you began to contemplate breakfast and what to wear for work.
     Trivial, daily things.
    “Good morning, everyone. "
“Oh, you’re finally here, ______.” Preoccupied with making sure the cups of coffee that you were carrying wouldn’t fall and splatter onto the sparkling tiles that Kunikida was so proud of, you only looked up when you heard his voice.
“What do you mean ‘finally’ - ” And that was when you see him. A shadow of your past, causing a shiver run down your spine that probably felt like seeing someone from the grave alive and walking.
Somehow, you had managed to set the container down on a nearby desk while attempting to regain your senses. The confusion was still clogging up your head, so you weren’t sure how you did that, plus you were still focused on him. His back was in front of you, so you couldn’t see his face, but you were sure. That dark and curly hair -
      “_______? You okay?“
“I - yeah, I’m fine.“ Shit. Unwanted memories flooded your mind, and you shook your head to clear them before clearing your throat, regaining your demeanor. "W-who is this?"
"A new recruit. He came under Taneda-san’s recommendations. The Director’s just introducing him to us.” Kunikida supplied. Indeed, he was talking to the Director, while Yosano-sensei was surveying him, a hand on her chin - deciding the best way to cut him up before healing him, maybe? -  Ranpo was making his way steadily through a bag of star-shaped candies, but you could see him analyzing the figure as well. You weren’t sure where Kenji was, but it didn’t really matter. “I’ll introduce him to you too.” He tapped the figure on the shoulder, who spun around with a cheery grin on his face - an expression that was more foreign than his presence in this office. “This is ______. They joined our organization earlier too, so you two might just get along."
If the mention of your name surprised him, Dazai didn’t betray any emotion. His eyes were observant, stopping and raking your face for a brief moment before his uncharacteristic grin appeared again. "I look forward to working with you, _____-kun*. Do teach me the ropes, would you?"
"Gladly,” You replied cooly, stepping forward and shaking his outstretched hand. Two could play this game, and it would do no one good if they knew you two were formerly, ah, associated. And if they knew his background and where he was from, well, let’s just say that Taneda-san made sure your references excluded your time in the Mafia. He had taken care to only mention your excellent results in the government (except that the Director was eventually informed, but by that time your work for the Agency was already top-notch), so you also took care to put your mafiaso background in the past. “I hope you find the Agency easy to adapt to, Dazai-san.” For effect, you squeezed his hand, and was satisfied to see a glimmer of surprise behind his otherwise immobile expression.
“You guys know each other?” Yosano-sensei asked, surprised. You cursed her internally, but Dazai was quick to cover up. “No way,” Dazai said carelessly. “I’m sure ______-kun is just being friendly, right?"
"Of course!” You made sure your smile was more than a grimace. “Oh, Dazai-san, I didn’t get your portion of coffee. Do you want to come along? The cafe downstairs is amazing.” Before he could reply, you had already spun on your heel, heading for the stairs.
“What the hell are you doing here?” You hissed, shoving him up the brick wall in the alley right behind the ADA’s building.  You weren’t sure what led you to this violent outburst, but it didn’t matter; shock translated to anger, and here you were. “Missing for almost a year? Turning up here in this - this new get-up and just pretending nothing happened?"
"Why, ______, I would’ve thought you were glad to see me. Weren’t you happy your lovely boyfriend is still alive?"  Dazai lost his cheerful facade, and the man glaring down at you showed a sliver of the danger and hostility that formed his aura during his time in the mafia. His smirk was scornful, and the light had vanished from his eyes. "Well?” He prompted, and the anger fueling you left you; your clenched fists on his shirt eased and he leaned back against the wall.
“I don’t know about ‘boyfriend’.” Your emotions swirled within you, and the confusion that you had when you first saw him came back. The sudden disappearance of anger made you light-headed, and you stumbled; Dazai caught you. The rough bandages brushing against your skin made memories rush back, and you fought back a sob. “But I do know the bastard in front of me is my friend. And if you want to build a relationship from that, that would be great."
"I’m glad you still like me, _____.” The playfulness was apparent in his tone, despite the existing rough edge. “I would’ve committed suicide otherwise. How can I live without you?”
"Don’t say that.“ His arms circled around your neck and you were glad; it allowed some distance but still intimacy. If he had hugged you around the waist you weren’t sure how you would respond. "I don’t want to hear you joking about your death anymore. Do you have any idea - "
"I do.” How quiet his voice was surprised you. “I’m really sorry, _______. I had to take care of something. But it’s alright now. I’m turning over a new leaf. The mafia is behind me. I’m done killing people. I’m done being Mori-san’s apprentice."
"I don’t care about any of that.” And you really didn’t. You had loved him when he was at his worst, in the mafia. Nothing would have surprised you, but you were happy that he decided to break free out of his own will. Spending half a year worrying whether he had died or not wasn’t easy, but now that he was back in front of you, you weren’t really concerned how he was.
To put it coarsely, you were just glad he was alive.
"Thank you, ______.“ His smell felt foreign, yet there was a feeling of returning home. You weren’t sure what happened, but tears were rolling down your cheeks and you felt ridiculously giddy; a sense of immense relief flooded your mind. You returned the hug hesitantly, and felt him murmur against your ear. "Thank you."
 Bonus:
"You two were gone pretty long."
"Yeah, we ran into the mafia halfway and spent some time knowing each other. Apparently we are a pretty good combination. Right, Dazai-san?"
"You got it, _____-kun! Oh, Kunikida-kun, the coffee downstairs is great! You should drink yours before it gets cold."
      "You two what now?"
*so I decided to use the ’-kun’ honorific because that is applicable to both women and men. For men, it is a common honorific for those younger/close with them. ’-kun’ for women is used only when the individual is close with the addresser. In any case, this honorific shows intimacy so I had Dazai use it. And because Dazai is carelessly intimate with people (outwardly), I had the reader address him with ’-san’ rather than using equally careless honorifics.
