This is a short (fangirling) post our translator wrote recently. She has now seen the movie 3 times (still not enough, she says) and can't wait for the rest of the world to witness this gem.
Check it out if you are interested in Ne Zha/Er Lang Shen/Feng Shen Yan Yi and how they are represented in our collective imagination.
We do post a lot of patron-exclusive content over there so feel free to sponsor our journey (and you get shout outs too!) but we do occasionally put out free content for all. Give us a follow nonetheless.

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.
Basically: this is everything I know of as of May 7, 2024. There might be more. I tried.
For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.
Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.
There is a list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates, and a similar list on Goodreads. Both look fairly up to date to me. Here's another danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.
-
Seven Seas:
The full list of danmei novels licensed by Seven Seas is here. The full list of danmei manhua licensed by Seven Seas is here.
These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats.

-
Rosmei:
Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask.
These titles are only being released as print editions.
Eta: titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions.

-
Monogatari Novels:
It is unclear to me if Monogatari Novel titles are available for world-wide distribution, but there are group orders being organized or I think they can be ordered directly from their webpage; they are based in Spain. These titles can also be ordered from at least some major retailers. Note that there has been some controversy about Monogatari Novels.
BAIHE: A Clear and Muddy Loss of Love (Jing Wei Qing Shang) by Please Don't Laugh
BAIHE: Female General and Eldest Princess (NuJiangjun he Zhang Gongzhu) by Please Don't Laugh
How to Survive as a Villain (Chuan Yue Cheng Fanpai Yao Ru He Huo Ming) manhua by Yi Yi Yi Yi

The Silent Concubine (Ya Nu) by Qiang Tang
BAIHE: Soulmate manhua by Wenzhi Lizi
-
Aloha Comics:
A tiny, Hawaii-based press focusing on manhua. Titles appear to primarily be available through Diamond Comics. There are also pre-orders on Yiggybean. All of these are pre-orders, though the earliest are coming out by the end of April 2024 (about two weeks after when I'm posting this).
All these titles are manhua!
Day Off by Qing Cai
Here U Are by DJUN
Link Click by Li Haoling and Haoliners (not technically danmei!)
Nirvana in Fire (Lang Ya Bang) by Hai Yan (not technically danmei!)
-
Chaleuria:
As far as I can tell, Chaleuria has not updated their webpage since April 2023, so the current status of in-progress titles is unknown. All titles are digital and/or e-book, and I'm not sure how to purchase them as I haven't tried.

World Hopping: Avenge Our Love (Ni Wufa Yuliao de Fenshou, Wo Du Neng Gei Ni Song Shang) by Xiaomao Bu Ai Jiao (no longer available)
-
Webnovel:
When I first made this list, I heard that Webnovel had a few titles but couldn't actually find them - but now I've found them, thanks to a list someone else put together. I'm including direct links to them, since I had so much trouble finding them at all.
Comrade: Almost a Cat-astrophic Love Story (Jintian ye Yao Nuli Dang Zhimao) by Demonic Fire (link)
My Boyfriend is a Dragon (Nanpiao Shi Tiaolong) by Chubby Strawberry Sauce (link)
The National Sweetheart Livestreamer is a Pro! (Quanmin Zhubo Shi Duiba) by Mo Shang Wang (link)
Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page
Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).
Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)
No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.
Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

for the ask game--
It's hard to get up in the morning, when one is being crushed by the massive body of a snake.
It was hard to get up in the morning, when one was being crushed by the massive body of a snake.
Winter came early to the mountains and Shen Qingqiu had taken measures to keep the room warm at night. Not well enough it seemed, evident by the transformed snake demon coiled around him, borrowing his body heat, head hidden among his hair. He abandoned any thoughts of exiting the bed when his calls and futile wriggles didn't stir Zhuzhi-lang at all.
Eventually he'd need to take care of some, er, bodily necessities, hunger being the least of them. He stroked along the coils around his chest and stomach, sighing at his predicament – what was he to do with this sleepy husband of his?

The Cunning Cat and Lazy Fox
Updated here first at AO3
Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 (here) | Chapter 4
Chapter 3 | Growing Closer
“Is this all you can remember?” You asked.
“Give me a break, I basically reincarnated,” Shang Huaisang whined. Currently, you are hanging out with Shang Huaisang at a teahouse and reading over the information he remembered of Proud Immortal Demon Way.
“It’s just that your book was not popular enough to warrant a Wiki page, or from what I last looked at. Much less the animals and plants,” You are contemplating mentioning Tianlang-Jun and Zhuzhi-lang. However, it is too early for that as Yue Qi is still Yue Qi and not Yue Qingyuan. “Anyways, how is Mobei-Jun?”
“I’m still gaining his trust,” Shang Huaisang replied.
“Alright, just… don’t take his hits and remind him that you’re a human,” As much as you like teasing Shen Jiu and gaslighting Yue Qi and Liu Mingcheng. You have some pity for Shang Huaisang as he is not only overworked but is also in a constant state of paranoia. Plus you do not like the pain-for-comedy trope either. Bonking Yue Qi the other day was your patience snapping, afterward, you went to sword training to release your rage.
“I will,” Shang Huaisang appreciated your care based on his small smile. You and Shang Huaisang became good friends over a couple of weeks.
“Jiu-er, I made sure you got your own room, it may be small but the door is strong and it has a lock,” You turned your head to look at Shen Jiu who lay right next to you. “So why are you here?”
“Do you not like Jiu-er anymore?” Your prickly junior brother asked. His eyes were wide, wearing a sad look. This damn cat is gaslighting you. You wrapped your arms around Shen Jiu and brought him closer to you where your foreheads touched.
“My dear Jiu-er,” You smiled sweetly. Shen Jiu's eyes widen at suddenly being pulled closer to you and the look in your eyes. You lowered a hand to hold his waist to pinch it.
“Hey!” Shen Jiu pushed you away and rubbed his waist.
“Jiu-er, as much as our martial sibling respects me, many will still talk behind my back. After all, I was not born male,” You pointedly stared at a dresser that held your undergarment. You know that Shen Jiu looked through your room, though you did not mind as you did give him a key to your room. “Hell, Yue-Shixiong asked if we dual cultivated,” You sighed.
“... What. Qi-ge asked that?” Shen Jiu mumbled. Now Shen Jiu actually looked upset.
“I didn’t reply to that and just hit him with my bamboo dizi. Jiu-er, as much as Shizun and the disciples of Qing Jing Peak respect my identity, not everyone does as such, you stick with me this closely” You gestured to yourself and him, in your bed, laid right next to each other. “Is seen as improper so there is a lot of gossip,”
“There is always gossip,” Shen Jiu complained.
“Yeah, that’s true. I guess it's better than your rumored lecherous ways,” You shrugged.
“There was a rumor of me seducing you so I could manipulate you and become the head disciple,” Shen Jiu said.
“Ha, as if, the disciples forgot at the beginning how lazy I was and it wasn’t till a certain incident that got me chosen by Shizun to be head disciple,” You said.
“I have been wondering about that, how did you become the head disciple,” Shen Jiu asked.
“Hm, I’ll tell you some other time,” You rolled over to lay on your back and closed your eyes. “We have a lot of work to do in the morning,”
“A-Duzhe! Tell me!” Shen Jiu whined.
“...I don't think this night is the right night for that tale, Jiu-er.” You turned your head and looked at Shen Jiu. Shen Jiu saw the look in your eyes and decided not to push anymore. He also rolled to lay on his back. You closed your eyes but smiled when you felt Shen Jiu hold your hand. Hand in hand, you and Shen Jiu drifted off to sleep.
“Oh fuck, oh fuck,” You mentioned last night to Shen Jiu that there will be a lot of work to do in the morning. The morning came and you took Shen Jiu with you on a hunt for a time-sensitive herb that your Shizun wanted to study but it went terribly wrong. Three overly-sized spiders are chasing the two of you. “Jiu-er! To the left,” Shen Jiu turned as you instructed and you followed after him while releasing many talismans that either protected your and Shen Jiu’s back or stuck to the three spiders to slow it down. Did you mention that you have a stupidly large amount of qi? Well, you do and when your Shizun learned about it they scolded you for hiding your potential.
“A-Duzhe! Where are we heading?” Shen Jiu yelled.
“To the cave tunnel that is only average people's size!” You yelled back.
“Alright!” Shen Jiu replied. As you defended your backs, Shen Jiu took the lead to find the cave tunnel you mentioned. He was quick to spot it as the two of you approached the mountain. “A-Duzhe! I can see the cave!”
“Okay!” You pulled out some talismans that glow brightly. “Jiu-er, lighting them up now!” You warned. Shen Jiu grabbed your hand as the spiders paused because of the lights and the two of you ran for your life towards the cave. Once deep enough the two of you stop running to catch a breath. “So much exercising,”
“...” As you were busy catching your breath, Shen Jiu was glaring at you as he caught his breath.
“Jiu-er?” You questioned when you turned to check on Shen Jiu.
“Since when did Shixiong have so much power?” Shen Jiu asked.
“What? Oh,” You remembered the aforementioned stupidly large amount of qi that is kind of an open secret of the mountain sect and how you recklessly used up a lot of talismans in front of Shen Jiu.
“Shixiong is truly lazy,” Shen Jiu pouted. As you come to learn, when Shen Jiu calls you senior brother and not your name with endearment, he is slightly annoyed or mad at you.
“My Shidi should know his Shixiong is not that attached to his position of head disciple and Shizun has chosen this Shixiong because of his achievement from the incident,” You explained. “Besides, this Shixiong got terribly scolded and lectured already by Shizun.”
“Shixiong has a lot of secrets,” Shen Jiu said.
“Shidi will learn all in time,” You replied.
“A-Duzhe, where does this tunnel lead to?” Shen Jiu asked after you dotted on him some more and started walking to the other side of the cave.
“Just a town, I think it’s called Peony Village because these soft pink peonies naturally grow there no matter what,” You explained. “Doesn’t it sound romantic, Jiu-er?” You teased him.
“Shixiong,” Shen Jiu gave you a blank stare. “Does Shizun not need us back soon?”
“We have the herbs in the time-frozen Qiankun pouch,” you shrugged and looked at the sky. “Plus I don’t think we have the energy to fly back before night falls,”
“I’ll trust A-Duzhe for now then,” Shen Jiu huffed. You grinned as the two of you entered Peony Village. Like its namesake, the village is overflown with soft pink peony bushes. The villagers were pleasant and welcoming as they placed peony flower crowns on your head and Shen Jiu’s head. Shen Jiu looked away from you as you and the village girls giggled at his flustered face. He grabbed your arm and dragged you to find a brothel. “Let’s go!”
“Haha Alright, alright, Shidi!” You laughed.
“There is a big banquet in front of the village chief’s home later, this one hopes the two Gongzi will appear,” Waved a nice auntie.
“Sure,” You yelled back and waved. As you and Shen Jiu found a brothel that was willing to room and board the two of you for the night, you asked Shen Jiu out on a date tomorrow.
“As Jiu-er heard, there is a banquet later tonight, shall we go together,” You asked.
“Why would this one go with such a shameless Shixiong?” Shen Jiu teased.
“Your Shixiong will get his Shidi’s food for him, so he doesn’t have to get up from his seat,” You smiled and leaned on Shen Jiu.
“Very well, this one will go with A-Duzhe,” Shen Jiu huffed.
“Will Jiu-er also like to view the peonies with me in the morning?” You asked.
“Is A-Duzhe trying to take up all my time?” Shen Jiu asked.
“A-Duzhe wants to have lots of memories with Jiu-er,” You replied.
“... Very well,” Shen Jiu agreed. You smiled brightly as you hugged Shen Jiu and forced him to lie on the bed.
“A-Duzhe!” Shen Jiu yelped but all you did was laugh.
Each time you went out and brought Shen Jiu with you, you conveniently went to photogenic and fun locations. You totally did not bribe your Shizun by allowing him to call upon you to play your dizi. Did you ever mention that you are a good dizi player? You are an incredible dizi player but you rarely play anymore and have to be bribed to play. Anyway, you had many fun “impulsive” dates with Shen Jiu and you can see that Shen Jiu softens over time. You also saw over time that Shen Jiu was willing to go out with not only his senior and junior sisters but his junior brothers too. No luck on his senior brothers though.

anyway this post exists just to let out some things(and also for me to archive things) bc my brain been rotting(help) for quite some time (svsss au long post)
an AU where zzl survives(jk lmao as we all know, he never died<3) but bc of severe wounds he lost some power...tlj's power also was not enough to disguise him as human well enough, but they found a solution - to keep him in a compact "energy-efficient" smaller form. Yes, the obligatory "my demon turned into a child" arc.
But tlj also sees this as a great opportunity to give zzl a new start bc he himself wants to just chill and absolutely doesn't need a second in command for that(besides, he's still young, why waste his life away near this rotting old man? get a life, boy). And so he hands the baby-lang to sqq, cause, naturally, who even would make a better shizun.
Sqq really hesitates but zzl seems to be in despair. as if he doesn't quite understand why his uncle is so eager on giving him away. and he just looks so cute and pettable. and sqq gives in. it's ok if it's just a kid right???sure lbh will get jealous anyway but at least sqq can slap him with a fan for being unreasonable.
His house is now infested with snakes but hey, at least all the other beasts and pests keep away now. His new disciple is...awful with swords(why would he ever learn to hold one when he could turn into a giant snake?? I wouldn't), but is quite helpful around the house(when lbh isn't looking). And has money.
He also looks human most of time when he's not using his demonic powers. When he does, some of his snake traits or demon mark begin to show up, but he and sqq are thoroughly trying to keep his true identity a secret. Sqq actually feels a little bitter about being his "shizun" bc, frankly spoken, it's more like zzl could teach him a thing or two, like some demonic tricks. So sqq just sticks to trying to teach him sword mastery so it would be believable that it's just his disciple.
Over time i even made some concept sketches bc i am so normal about this(his hairstyle was given to him by sqq who once got a little carried away and forgot that zzl is not actually a child...still, if master shen did this, then this is good). Sqq called him Zhu-er and oddly enough, no one suspected a thing...perhaps bc to everyone else he was just a secret character<#
anyway they're having a blast and silly little time(non romantic and never will be)(i just find it wholesome)<-delusional

Zhuang's JttW Doodles #3
(The True Lord) laughed and said, “This must be that macaque! He is trying to fool me again. I’ve seen temples before, but none of them would stick their flag pole at the back! This must be that beast in disguise! If he fooled me into entering, he would take hold of me with a bite. How could I go in then? Maybe I should pull a few punches to break the windows first, and then kick the doors open!” The Great Sage heard it and thought in horror, “How cruel! How very cruel! The doors are my teeth and windows my eyes. If he really hit my teeth and gouged my eyes, what should I even do?”
Journey to the West, Chapter 6
This poem appears in Chapter 6, Part 2 of the audio drama.
Also featured on our Patreon page.
===
Hi, this is Zhuang. I made all the art for this series.
Here are some doodles I made almost 10 years ago when I could kind of draw but not really. Not sure if I'm entirely out of that state now but hopefully I have improved.
Each one corresponds to a specific passage in the original text, as written on the doodle itself in traditional Chinese. And I will also put the English translation from the audio drama down below for your reference. Not every chapter has a doodle, so I will post the ones we've already covered in the drama, and the rest as we eventually get there.
===
Why I chose this scene:
Er Lang Shen will forever be special in Wu Kong's heart for being the first opponent he truly feared(and respected, as we will later learn). In the JttW universe, Er Lang Shen also stands out in his very own way, which probably resonated with Wu Kong's situation too.
Er Lang Shen's mother was an immortal goddess, and his father was a mortal man. In a sense, he was born a crime, and was the center of conflict between gods and humans in a deeply personal way. This would explain why despite his immense powers (something that could allow him to take very high office in Heaven), he preferred to keep his own military force and be, quite literally, a down-to-earth sort of god.
He finds kinship in the human world, in the low ranking gods who'd never get to meet His Majesty up high, staying as far away from his emperor uncle as possible. Mundane prayers from the common people probably brings him more joy than the formality and bureaucracy in the Heavenly Palace. And ironically, at the end of the day, it was up to him, someone who quite obviously despised the way of life up high, to save heaven from destruction. Heaven could pretend he wasn't one of them, but only until the day when they desperately needed his powers.
His pride had a good day that day.
This could also explain why he and Wu Kong had no hard feelings against each other. Er Lang Shen is about as cool and gracious a person as you can imagine. He will only appear once more in future chapters, and you'd love to see how Wu Kong deals with this reunion.

"Design inspiration, symbolism and references behind the water beasts in New Gods: Nezha Reborn"
❗ Premise. DO NOT take what I write for absolute truth or canon material, regardless of the sources. I drew my own conclusions, heavily influenced by my own reading key. Take it as a theory!
Tumblr media
The first creature coming to mind when looking at them is surely the Xièzhì (獬豸), a mythical beast that appears multiple times in East Asian legends. We can find a detailed description of these creatures in the Shou Pu (獸譜), a painted album created for the Qianlong Emperor from 1750 to 1761 by court artists Yu Sheng and Zhang Weibang, depicting terrestrial animals and legendary beasts and part of the Emperor's personal encyclopedia. Also known with the korean name "Haetae", the Xiezhi is depicted as a muscular beast with a likeness to a lion, goat, and unicorn (sometimes referred to exactly as a “unicorn lion”) living in the northeastern wilderness.
Tumblr media
In Shou Pu, and also in many legends, it's said they're naturally able to distinguish innocent from guilty, right from wrong, making them an ultimate symbol of justice that appears a lot in decorations, paintings, buldings and clothing, giving also the name to the judicial hat (法冠) that symbolizes the impartial and effective enforcement of the law.
Tumblr media
It's also known as a guardian against disaster, a symbol of water due to its fire-eating qualities and a messenger of the heaven, which also stands for a sense of justice. The attention on justice's symbolism is also drawn by another design detail of the water beasts: the third eye on their forehead. Comes natural the association with “the Eye of Heaven” (天眼), able to differentiate truth from lies, and with "the embodiment of justice" himself: the noble and powerful warrior god Erlang Shen, who is also related to hydrology in a very interesting way.
Now stay with me, because this will lead to another creature that also possibly inspired the water beasts and that brings EVERYTHING together: justice, water and floods. But to better introduce them, first we have to understand why the reference to Erlang is important.
Tumblr media
In Chinese myths, Erlang Shen is also a folk hero that helped alleviate the terrible flooding of the Min river. With his name meaning "godly second son" (er = two; lang = boy; shen = god), he was believed to be the second son of the engineer Li Bing, hired to prevent the yearly flooding that would affect the lives of the people of the Chengdu Plains and Dujiangyan city (Sichuan). However, Li Bing couldn't discover the source of the flooding, as it appeared that the flooding wasn't natural. Legend has it that Li Bing sent Erlang to sail up and down the river for a year to attempt to discover the source of the annual flood, but he couldn't discover the cause either.
One day, as Erlang is walking with seven hunters who had witnessed his bravery in slaying a rogue tiger, they chance upon an old woman who is crying at the edge of the river near Dujiangyan. She tells Erlang that she is distraught, as one of her grandsons is to be sacrificed to a dragon that has held dominion over the river for generations. Believing that he has discovered the source of the river’s flooding, Erlang volunteered to take the place of the woman’s grandson to be offered as sacrifice to the dragon instead.
When the ancient dragon arrived to take his sacrifice, Erlang and his friends leapt from hiding and chased the dragon to the river, where the old woman trapped it with chains in a pool below the Dragon Taming Temple.
Tumblr media
With the dragon immobile, Erlang splitted the creature in half with his double-edged lance. And with the dragon dead, the annual flooding ended and peace and tranquility came to the Chengdu Plains. To thank Erlang for his bravery, the people elevated him and his father to godhood and dedicated a local temple as Two Kings Temple in their honor (The Erwang Temple in Dujiangyan).
Tumblr media
The myth of the water dragon being chained to control the hydrology of the province instantly felt familiar. And it's here that we find the connection to the water beasts.
Li Bing and his son Erlang worked at the complex irrigation system that protected the area and the people from the severe flood of the Min River: the Dujiangyan irrigation system, constructed in 256 BC, which is still in use today. In literature's classic "Huayang Guozhi·Shuzhi" is recorded that, along other clever solutions to avoid a dam, Li Bing also created 5 massive statues referred to as "Water town god beast" (鎮水神獸 if the translation is wrong please correct me!) which resembled a single horned creature similar to a rhino. With a length of more than 3m and a weight of 8 tons, two of these statues were buried in the river to "tame the water spirits". The resemblance with the water beasts, able to trap the river dragons, is astonishing. Curiously, when in July 2013 one of these statues was brought to the surface by archaeologists, heavy rainfalls occurred in Sichuan causing successive floods, and rumors spread saying "that removing the beast from its place, the water spirits couldn't be trapped anymore", followed by the request to put it back in its place claiming their ancestors "buried it there for a reason". According to a popular local tradition, rhinos are a divine beast that can help stop flooding and the newfound statues were supposedly buried by a local folk hero, more likely Erlang himself.
Tumblr media
Back to Nezha Reborn, even if Donghai is a fictional city with the name of the raging sea where Nezha kills Ao Bing, it's located near the Eastern Sea. According to what Ao Guang says, is VERY likely that most of the water drawn in by the beasts is from the Yangtze river and its tributary the Min river itself, which would make everything coherent.
Tumblr media
In addition to the justice symbolism of the water beasts (and this is my personal interpretation), Ao Guang's control of the waters (and, as a result, of Donghai itself) can also be represented by the chained water beasts themselves, being them the associated with a benevolent and righteous ruler. Therefore, the ending scene with Su Junzhu carrying the beast cub, can be read as justice finally being brought in Donghai following Ao Guang's demise, as the comeback of water finally marks the city's rebirth.

dream anon here, finally sending asks to the right @ (that's still so embarrassing ahh) I didn't really intend it to be a request lol, I just wanted to share a funny thing :D
the nyanjiu I mentioned was shen jiu being an actual cat (I think dream me was thinking about @/sanadamusio on Twitter's nyanjiu (here's one of the tweets: https://twitter.com/sanadamusio/status/1720319766345433167?t=h-BqdYeps3pTa8uOwIWYHQ&s=19)
as for binghe, I'm not quite sure, I think either would be quite funny, but maybe bingge living through the original pidw and then transported to this alternate universe that has sqq!reader (who has also lived through their own au version of pidw but gets transported back to before shit hits the fan)? imagine seeing your shizun as a cat and then this stranger is now your "shizun" lmao-
At least it was still the right person. And I follow that artist, it's a super cute comic. Poor Shang Qinghua, witnessing his martial sibling and LBH being dramatic with a cat. btw I was slapped with inspirations so have this 2,000 worddump
Alone in the Bamboo Grove
Updated here first at AO3
From Anon:
"peak lord reader, either a time traveller (lived through all of the events of pidw) or a transmigrator, nyan jiu as their pet (apparently normal for peak lords to just have pets), and transmigrator luo binghe"
Summary:
You awaken in an alleyway after saving your friend Shen Jiu. You are back in the past but things are different. Your Shidi is just an innocent cat now. And you are not the only one who went back.
The reader is called Dúzhě (读者) which means “reader”
Duzhe will have the surname Mò (墨) in the beginning and later have the surname Shen
Duzhe is referred to as neutrally as possible
Warning; Violence and death in the beginning, mention of torture,
One foot in front of the other. A trail of blood follows you as your back and sides throb and bleed from your stab wounds and slashes. You continued to endure, you need to see Shen Jiu at least once. From what you heard, you probably will accompany Shen Jiu to the afterlife as you doubt you will survive your wounds and your old friend has been tortured ruthlessly. You reach a door that you know in your heart that Shen Jiu is behind it. You slowly open that door and see a limbless body hanging. You slowly approach your limbless.
“Shen-” You were about to call for Shen Jiu until you felt pain in your right leg and you fell.
“Ah, an interloper has entered the palace,” A chilling voice stated behind you, the Demon Emperor Luo Binghe no doubt. Luo Binghe stepped around you to stand in front of you. “This disciple greets Hallmaster Mo,“
“Luo… Binghe,” You mumbled.
“Hallmaster Mo, won’t you greet this disciple back?” Luo Binghe slammed his foot on your back and you coughed out blood. Your vision began to blur which made shaky unfurl your left hand. Two talismans made by a demon named Zhuzhi-lang will teleport you and Shen Jiu out of the palace and he will also cause a distraction for Luo Binghe as a favor for helping him free the previous demon emperor Tianlang-jun. As Luo Binghe was about to speak you shaky launched a talisman to Shen Jiu and quickly teleported the two of you out the Luo Binghe’s palace.
“Master Mo!” Zhuzhi-lang called as he watched you and Shen Jiu land on the bed.
“...I think it’s time to part ways Zhuzhi-lang, thank you.” You curled around Shen Jiu. Zhuzhi-lang looked at you for a moment then turned to look away.
“Goodbye, Master Mo. I will make sure to burn your and Master Shen's bodies as well as hide your and Master Shen’s ashes from Emperor Luo Binghe,” Zhuzhi-lang said and before he left the room, he poured poison into your and Shen Jiu’s mouth. It will make you drowsy and pass away once you close your eyes. You shakily lay a hand on Shen Jiu's cheek and brush his hair away from his face.
“Shixiong apologized for being late, Jiu-er. Shixiong… Shixiong…….” You did not get to finish your thoughts as you drifted off.
Luo Binghe was never able to find you and Shen Jiu or your ashes as Zhuzhi-lang and Tianlang-jun hid them under the blue shining soul-sucking tree[1]. The tree eats any souls but pure demon souls, not even Luo Binghe can get close to the tree because of being a half-demon as the tree would start sucking on his human half.
You open your eyes and stare at your lap. You look around, you are in an alley and a child again.
“Meow,” A cat with white fur and familiar green eyes stared at you as they placed a paw on your leg. You quietly sobbed as you hugged the cat.
“Hahaha, I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing,” You hysterically cried in the alley for a while.
You heard a crash and shouts. You slowly got up with Nyan Jiu and walked toward the probably trouble. From where you stood, you witnessed a young Yue Qi being thrown and his friend being taken. Ah, the moment when Shen Jiu was taken to the Qiu family, you thought. You petted Nyan Jiu in your arms. But Shen Jiu no longer exists here. You slowly walked up to Yue Qi.
“Gege,” You mumbled.
“A-Zhe,” Yue Qi looked at you with watery eyes. You held out Nyan Jiu to him and he took Shen Jiu in his arms and cried into Nyan Jiu’s fur.
“We should go,” You look to where Cang Qiong Mountain is. “If you want to grow stronger, you must learn how to,” You heard Yue Qi sniff then get up. He hands you back Nyan Jiu and holds your left hand.
“Let’s go,” Yue Qi stated. A different beginning compared to the past, a missing person who will never be here in the present, and an unknown future is ahead of you.
“You, what is this one’s name,” Qing Jing Peak Lord asked. You paused in your digging and looked up, the Peak Lord was standing and staring in front of you. You looked down at where Nyan Jiu resting.
“This one is… Shen Duzhe,” You answered.
“From now on, Shen Duzhe is a disciple of Qing Jing Peak,”
“A-Zhe, I became the head disciple of Qiong Ding Peak,” Yue Qi announced over tea time. You smiled and cheered. You had thought Yue Qi would rush like in your previous life to save Qiu Jianluo’s victim but since the kid was not Shen Jiu, and you were pretty sure the kid was the brat that picked fights with Shen Jiu often, Yue Qi is progressing steadily and smoothly.
And since becoming a Qing Jing disciple, you can help but think that you have taken Shen Jiu’s place which was irrational as you were also a Qing Jing disciple in your previous life.
“Meow,” Nyan Jiu jumped on the table.
“Ah!” Yue Qi yelped in surprise. Nyan Jiu’s head softly bumped against your hand leading to you petting Nyan Jiu. Yue Qi smiled as he watched you pet Nyan Jiu “I’m glad Shigu allowed you to keep him,”
“Hm,” You nodded “Shizun even acknowledged Nyan Jiu as a disciple,”
“A-Zhe” Yue Qi laughed.
As you watched Yue Qi gets his courtesy name announced and received his hair crown. You cannot help but feel a little melancholy, remembering your previous life during this time. Shen Jiu felt validated but also unhappy.
“The new Peak Lord of Qing Jing Peak, Shen Qingqiu,” You elegantly walked up the stage and stood in front of your Shizun. You bowed to her then bowed to the other peak lords. You kneeled facing the crowd and stilted yourself as you Shizun undone your ponytail, combed your hair in a half-do, and attached a hair crown. You ended up dissociated through the whole ceremony and after the party.
“Meow,” Nyan Jiu rubbed his head against your leg after you slipped out from the party to stargaze. Nyan Jiu joined you on the rock you had chosen as your set. He curled in your lap as you silently cried your sorrows away.
“Shizun…” You voiced muffled by the table you were laying your head on. Your Shizun ascending was still upsetting a second time around. You felt Nyan Jiu curled around your head as you cried on your Shizun’s desk.
“Shen Jiu, a world without you is lonely,” You close your eyes as Nyan Jiu purrs making you drift off to sleep.
Yue Qi would later find you and carry you to your new bed in the bamboo house.
It is time to meet Luo Binghe. You stared subtly at the fluffy head of the future demon emperor.
“Shizun!” Ning Yingying called and waved as she walked up to you. “Yingying wants a Shidi or Shimei!” She stated. You hummed and turned to look at your junior brother next to you.
“Liu-shidi, which disciple is promising?” You asked. Even though you are Shen Qingqiu now, you are not Shen Jiu nor as jaded as he was. So your relationship with your martial arts siblings was heaps better compared to Shen Jiu’s.
“That child with over there has a lot of potential, Shixiong,” Liu Qingge pointed to Luo Binghe. Of course, you thought. Look at Ning Yingying, tilt your head as a silent gesture to go to Luo Binghe. She smiled and nodded.
“Thank you, Sizhun!” She happily walked towards Luo Binghe and you followed her.
“Hello! I’m your Shijie, Ning Yingying. Qing Jing Peak Lord Shen Qingqiu has chosen you as their disciple,” Ning Yingying introduced herself and you to Luo Binghe. You immediately noticed that the slightly widened eye look was not one of innocent surprise but of unexpected change. You can see his dark eyes staring at you as he observes how different you are from Shen Jiu. You snapped your fan open to cover the bottom of your face.
“What is this one name?” You asked.
“This one is named Luo Binghe,” He replied after a moment. You closed your eyes and turned away from him.
“Ning Yingying, see to his accommodations and supplies,” You commended.
“Yes, Shizun,” Ning Yingying despite your multiple one-on-one etiquette lessons dragged Luo Binghe away.
Demon Emperor Luo Binghe opened his eyes to dirt and a shovel in his hands. He observed his small hands as he subconsciously started digging. He successfully went back in time. He can-
“Hello! I’m your Shijie, Ning Yingying. Qing Jing Peak Lord Shen Qingqiu has chosen you as their disciple,” The youthful voice of a young Ning Yingying greeted Luo Binghe. He looked at the young Ning Yingying but paused at the person next to her. Shen Qingqiu? he thought. However, the person next to Ning Yingying was what he remembered as a hallmaster who treated him neutrally. Luo Binghe does not know if he should be thankful or angry about that. Not his scummy Shen Qingqiu snapped open their fan, how familiar, and asked for his name.
“This one is named Luo Binghe,” Luo Binghe replied.
“Ning Yingying, see to his accommodations and supplies,” Shen Qingqiu commended after turning away from him. A slight fury rolled in his stomach but Ning Yingying dragged him away from Shen Qingqiu and his thoughts.
This timeline is so much different from Luo Binghe’s previous life.  Qing Jing Peak was a lot more friendly to Luo Binghe, he had his room with only one roommate, he was not bullied, and while Ming Fan was not head disciple, he was the one to run the male dormitory, he did not bully Luo Binghe. Ming Fan was far too busy for Luo Binghe to see him for most of the day.
The person who is called Shen Qingqiu was different from his Shen Qingqiu. The Shen Qingqiu here while cold was not as ruthless as his Shen Qingqiu. They did not pour tea on him like his scummy Sizhun. Their go-to harsh punishment was free labor for the village at the bottom of the mountain. Luo Binghe also noticed how kind this Shen Qingqiu was. He saw Shen Qingqiu in the kitchen one night cooking a large serving of egg soup, mumbling to themself about how his disciple needed to grow up strong and well.
Luo Binghe has mixed feelings. His scum of a Shizun is no longer here to pay for all the pain he inflicted on Luo Binghe but he now has a nice Shizun like that other Luo Binghe had. The Shen Qingqiu here may not be dotting but they cared. When Shen Qingqiu stumbled upon Luo Binghe out at night contemplating, they just signed and scolded him.
There was Shen Qingqiu’s cat who had his scum of  Shizun’s green eyes. Luo Binghe heard Shen Qingqiu call it Nyan Jiu and that cat hissed at him whenever saw him. He cannot do anything as the last person who maliciously messed with Shen Qingqiu’s cat, the merchant had misfortune after misfortune cast upon him.
As the Immortal Alliance Conference neared, you decided to confront Luo Binghe. You heard a knock on your door and you could feel the Qi was Luo Binghe’s.
“Come in,” You said. Luo Binghe slid open your door and closed it behind him after entering the room. A talisman slid out from your sleeve, flew past Luo Binghe without his knowledge, and attached itself to your front door.
“This Disciple Luo greets his Sizhun,” Luo Binghe bowed. You nodded in acknowledgment. He began preparing tea for your discussion.
“This master has entered Luo Binghe in the Immortal Alliance Conference, this master expects that their disciple won’t disappoint this master,” You started right after Luo Binghe poured you tea.
“Yes, Shizun,” Luo Binghe replied. You started at Luo Binghe for a moment, taking in the Luo Binghe who is your disciple as your next words would no doubt change him.
“So, how long has Junshang been here?” You asked.
“Shizun?” Luo Binghe question.
“Please, I was the second choice as Qing Jing's head disciple in the previous timeline, and now was Qing Jing’s head disciple, then became Qing Jing’s Peak Lord. You're not fooling me, Luo Binghe,” After your last words you moved as Luo Binghe launched at you. With a hand gesture, immortal binding cables sprung out from under your desk and tied up Luo Binghe.
“I should have expected that Shen Qingqiu would always be a scum,” Luo Binghe said. You silently stared at Luo Binghe as he struggled.
“And one who cannot love themself cannot love others,” You stated.
“...What?” Luo Binghe questioned as it was out of nowhere.
“The Shen Jiu and Luo Binghe who continued the cycle of abuse, out of blinding hatred of the world and self,” You sat on Luo Binghe, pulled out a vial, you forced him to drink it. It caused Luo Binghe to go to sleep and witness Shen Jiu’s past. Once more, you have helped Zhuzhi-lang and Tianlang-jun and in return will help you in your quest. Now you wait for Luo Binghe to wake up.
You carried Luo Binghe to your side room and laid him on the bed. Yo tucked him in and gently brushed his hair away from his face. Depending on how he reacted, information will be given to you via snake from another dream demon, you will either act as if you found Luo Binghe passed out from stress or you will try once more to wash away his heart demons.
“Can you let go Luo Binghe? Or will still walk of heart?” You mumbled to yourself.
“Meow,” Nyan Jiu jumped on the bed and went on your lap. You gently pet him as always.
“If you could talk you would call me a fool, Shidi,”

Realising that, with the way I have their relationship set up, SY!SQQ & his sister parallel Shen Jiu and Yue Qingyuan some. Not exactly, but enough.
--in that, Shen Mei is steadfastly attached to their former lives/relationship & her brother... still avoids/tries not to think about the life they left behind any more than he has to. He flinches whenever she tries to bring up their family. Prefers not to, even if like! It’s not that he didn’t/doesn’t love them or her, but that’s in the past. They’re happy here, right? There’s no need to dwell......
Meanwhile, like I mentioned before, Shen Mei defines herself by her past life & her relationship to her brother. Still. It doesn’t matter how many years it’s been, she’s still holding on. She thinks about & misses their family terribly often. She still calls Shen Qingqiu San-ge; she calls YQY & LQG Da-ge and Er-ge, and Shang Qinghua Shushu. She even starts calling Tianlang-Jun Dad eventually [not sure which variant atm]. She originally called him Uncle like she does with SQH, but after she gets invested in befriending Bing-ge he gets promoted.
(I really need to write the context for this, because there’s some canon-divergence in this AU surrounding the Trial whereupon she allows herself to get kidnapped by Zhuzhi-Lang... and consequently spends a good long while with the two of them. But I digress)
Anyway, Shen Mei clings to the vestiges of Family, assigning roles that are now vacant & knowing it might be a bit rude. or presumptuous. which is why she only uses some of these terms situationally. But San-ge is San-ge. And Shen Qingqiu is just going to have to accept that.... and suppose he doesn’t stop her, but it does gall him that she refuses to call him Shizun 95% of the time. He’s fully accepted his new role & she won’t accept hers.
It’s complicated. SY!Shen Qingqiu does better than Shen Jiu, but his avoidance still causes problems between them sometimes. She doesn’t want to press him too much, but he’s her only real family. Not that she doesn’t love her new found family, too, but it’s-- not the same. She tends to complain to Shang Qinghua about it. He’s the only other person from their world... and that’s its own can of worms, considering Airplane’s relationship with his past life’s family.
But once he gets used to it, he doesn’t mind being Shushu too much. He still doesn’t know what she expects him to do about Shen Qingqiu, though.
