I just wanted to make sure: have you been in the ofmd fandom during s1 coming out? I'm very interested in meta from that time (I'm not asking for any links, I can search myself, don't want to bother you, unless you would like to recommend something, that would be great of course)

Hello! Yes I have! I started watching the show a few days after s1ep7&8 came out, and watched eps 9&10 the moment they came out!

During the early days of fandom meta, you had a lot of straight up show analysis. Songs, motifs, symbols and explaining characters actions and the like. Back then I don't think I ever posted, just reblogged some stuff relating to Ed/Stede.

For that, I'd recommend looking up the topics I listed from lighthouse symbolism, music in certain scenes. Bare bones, but fun stuff! The tags 'ofmd meta' 'Edward Teach meta' or character + meta. That or ofmd symbolism, ofmd mental health, Ed's heart(referencing the red cloth), Oranges, Oluwande's earing.

My biggest draw here is I just love characters and analyzing character arcs in stories. So I have always been on the more meta sides of fandom.

I started posting light meta for Ed and Izzy maybe around June ish of 2022? Maybe? Nothing big, but from then on I focused mainly in the Izzy spaces. FOR ME: I was more intrigued by the meta on the cycles of abuse, classism, refrences to historical piracy, and just sheer angst and heart and emotional honesty of the Meta on this side of the fandom. I grew up and still live in a very red very rural US state and cant safely be visibly queer, so i latched onto Izzy's caution around visable queerness/vulnerability and habit to cling onto the established norm vs. Stede and Ed's story on 'The Love Shack' Carribean eddition. (and the fact Izzy's side treated Ed and Stede like characters that COULD still make mistakes.)

Some fans prefer the romance of ofmd while others prefer the story of family/acceptance/angst. We as a fandom split pretty quickly after ep 10. Trust me.

I sadly can't recommend you anyone specific due to essentially texting this post rn (and if any fans at the time comment down below any notable meta writers they can remember, I'd appreciate it-im drawing a blank besides my mutuals-hell give yourself a shout out if youd like). What i can give you are the disagreements that split meta writing in the fandom during the hiatus. Hell some of these even have trickle-down effects to this day as to how the fandom portrays these characters TO THIS DAY. This is where I see the clear line between what ofmd fandom will call the Izzy 'canyon' of meta vs general fan posting.

1.) Did Izzy influence/order Ed to become the Kraken? [Ed meta: (to be a bit uncharitable) Ed felt like he was alone and he'd only be able to keep Izzy in his life is if he became the Kraken (or Izzy is somehow abusing Ed to make that choice to become the monster he feared)] [izzy meta: izzy wanted blackbeard back, his friend and captain, not the Kraken. He cares about Ed being safe, and for them, that means hiding behind the blackbeard shield. Even if it keeps them both stagnant]

2.) Does Ed want to kill? How does he frame killing? How does he moralize it? How does this trauma affect him as a character? How does he value the lives of his crew ('they're pirates, that's their job' s1ep4 vs his dad or the ship he lit on fire for example)

3.) Is izzy homophobic/racist/a colonist/more of a piece of shit beyond just being an antagonist(if i were you I'd also just stick away from a post if it seems like the writer is framing all of Ed's actions like Izzy is his 'puppet master controlling the strings'.)

4.) Why do Stede and Ed seem to struggle to care about anyone else in their lives beyond each other? (Not really popular outside of Izzy spaces unless discussing ADHD/AUTISM. Honestly I don't know how you'd look for this in a Tumblr search bar, but it's some good stuff)

5.) Edward Teach has Adhd/BPD/Depression or the cycle of abuse, Stede Bonnet has Autism/Adhd/emotional childhood neglect including some amazing meta on masking. I think I even wrote something about Izzy and autism actually....

If I were you this is where I'd start. The mental health discussions in this Fandom are intriguing. S2 did basically confirm the ADHD 100% for anyone who was doubting, and healed Ed's btd with stedes dick, but other than that. There's some really good stuff in there. An easy way to find some good writers!

>) ALSO: Does piracy represent masculinity?? (S1 says maybe, it depends. S2 throws that whole meta out the window, but it was fun to talk about equating Izzy and Ed's leather daddy ship and more masculinity presentations of queerness to traditional masc gender roles)

6.) Do you define Ed and his actions as his own or as that under labels? This one is super frustrating to me personally. It does nothing for me to look at s2ep1 and say 'see that's the Kraken, that's a mask, that's not Ed'. But a lot of the general wider fandom do see Ed masking as somehow putting on a role, like in a play, and carrying out his evil actions under a pseudonym. These people usually will also believe the 'Izzy is manipulating a mentally ill man' stuff. As if Izzy isn't also SUPER fucked up.

THIS lack of character direction affected our fandoms fanfic and fanart too. I look at Ed and see a man who is and has fucked up. But hell, go back to S1 fic and you can read a fic where izzy slaughters puppies and Ed stands by with 'sexy cow eyes' unable to stop him. Then the next read 'Ed/Stede slowburn post s1 where Izzy goes to get Stede and learns to be apart of the crew' in 40k words.

7.) Jim's religious trauma, what is up with Buttons, Lucius/Izzy and Polyamory dynamics, or other topics with side characters that are brushed off. I bet right now if you look at people writing S2 Frenchie trauma Meta, they wrote stuff for s1

8.) Also- was izzy turned on by the toe thing/getting slammed into a wall. Yes. This is still debated. As a con oneill fan, those are not his 'I'm hot for this' faces. But No. You will still see that interpretation today that he wanted Ed to do something to him only because he got off on it. Even after s2. (Izzy being a masochist however? Fan theory that was embraced and made into a refrence in s2 which was fun)

FCG discovering their soul, that they developed themselves

The group fighting (literally) for Laudna

The interactions between VM and BH where perfect, Percy’s understandable anger towards the thought of being Delilah back, Vex’s guilt because she feel responsible for Laudna’s first death, and Pike just being Pike, the best damn baker

Oh, I am absolutely with you on that. GOD what an episode!!!! So many highlights!!!!!! So many fascinating character interactions and conversations and onion-peeling-layers and smidges of angst and determination and love and- nice. NICE. Im still so excited that everything is kind of coming out in interconnected jumbles, and I am absolutely going to end up writing individual metas about more of these, but suffice it to say:

- I loved F.C.G's reaction to getting definitive proof they were alive. I love that it was almost less joyous and a little more scared. Because it IS scary! All this time, F.C.G has been living their life for others, divining their purpose from others, they haven't really been living like they were. Alive. Realizing you have a life on your own terms, under your own control, is freeing, and that freedom can be scary! and kind of shitty, sometimes! You have all this space to fuck up. You have all this responsibility if you do. F.C.G realizes they have a life, they are alive, their life matters. and their first reaction is "well, shit." thats SO GOOD. "Well, I have to live." "Unfortunately, true." 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌🥳🥳🥳🥳

- I'm a little less confident on my reads of Vox Machina but from what I knew I really liked how those conversations played out. It all made sense to me. which is nice. Percy with his family and hard won peace around him, seeing his worst fears rise up and threaten. Vex with guilt around her shoulders but the chance to help. Pike with that kindness and sincerity and flour on her clothes and being unused to reviving again but so good at helping. And also Keyleth really needing a nap and a few hugs maybe. Someone get that gal some calming tea, stat. The interplay- Vex touching Laudna's ears, Pike watching everyone with entertainment, THE ASHTON AND PERCY CONVERSATION. god that conversation

- I've got so many feelings about Bell's Hells literally fighting for Laudna, fighting through a mindscape comprised of Laudna's personal demons. I've got SO many. Some people have already written excellent posts about it (@c-is-for-circinate's post here, and @mockingmolly s post here, come to mind), and I already waxed poetic about it right after the episode but like. its so good! its symbolic and sweet and weighted and poetic and like. When Pike proposed it, they all said yes, almsot immediately, with almost no hesitation. This party of people who were always so eager to dive into each others problems, to help each other, getting to LITERALLY. Dive in and fight and help and save. And they did it through a weird fucked up slumber party. perf. (and i JUST READ A OSOT ABOUT THIS and need ti add it here and its about how laudna Isnt Getting A Say In It rn as well intentioned as it is which. also makes it. kind of fucked. god this needs its own post but like. yea.)

- you didnt mention this explicitly but the ashton and percy convo and tbh everything about how ashton reacted to these massively powerful people- the unsureness and reservations then just- straight up opening up to Percy, in a way, in their fury. the changes in them moving them to anger, still, but of a different sort. pleading, but angrily, furious, trying to push reason. so offensive their defense dropped. that conversation was SOMETHING.

where you post: fics are all on ao3 and i try to crosspost tumblr meta there if it starts to approximate fic! i don’t post full fics on tumblr though

most popular oneshot: far and away a soft and heavy weight (i never really know what makes a fic “popular” but it has the most hits, kudos, and bookmarks so this one is pretty easy lol), which makes me happy because i still adore it, literally just 5k of gorgug and zelda sharing hoodies that’s it

most popular multi-chapter: only one d20 multichapter lol so it’s almost by default actualize (the first attack) my d20bb fic! gorgug/zelda/ragh mutual pining/shenanigans/groupchat textfic during a game of assassins

fics you were nervous to post: my bb fic might qualify, but i think by the time i got to posting i was more relieved/excited for ppl to finally get to read it than nervous, though i was definitely nervous in the week running up as i scrambled to finish it. genuinely, though, i think i’m most nervous to post gift fics like slow fall / otherworldly leap and nightcap (just fall in the bed) bc i never know if i’ve written something the recipient will like!!

how do you choose your titles: rule number one is it’s gotta be three or four words MINIMUM and all lowercase that’s just how it’s gotta be but otherwise i love a good quote from the source material or a song lyric. bonus points if there’s a parenthetical somewhere or the lyric crosses a line break

do you outline: i don’t think anyone would call it an outline but i do do notes before i start writing anything! usually it’s little snatches of dialogue or what will eventually become the summary or a numbered list from 1 to 6 if it’s a 5+1. i did have a longer outline for my bb fic but my artist partner + beta could tell you that there were three separate outlines as i started cutting stuff out lol

favorite story i’ve written so far: stream this is me trying it was so cathartic to write, seven maidens rights!

complete: all of them :D (for d20 anyway) i have learned from previous fandoms that i am not to be trusted with multichap fics

in progress: none :D again i truly cannot be trusted with an update schedule or multichaps

coming soon: i think i’m gonna let myself chill for a while after d20bb and d20december exchange which were truly so fun BUT i do have a couple of wips in the folder including a 5+1 rickyesther, some brainstorming abt transracial adoptee/diaspora!gorgug whom i adore dearly (and who my d20december gift has made me newly excited about!), and of course more seven maidens/zelda thoughts! i gotta say though, the fics i love the most are the ones i spent less than 24 hours on that just come to me spontaneously, so maybe an ep of tuc2 soon will inspire something :D

Favorite episodes (in chronological order):

15:4 Atomic Monsters - Demon!Sam flashbacks! Dean in a beard! Some old fashioned banter! Meatman! Beaverdale! Love how Sam starts arguing w the parents in the parking lot - Me too, Sam, me too. Loving the self-aware monster. I know Becky is problematique™, but I dig her, so, all kinds of fuck Chuck. He must die, and when he does this is the episode I’ll think about.

15:6 Golden Time - Badass protection spells. Dean in a robe and a hot dog pyjamas. Cas going by Clarence. Jogging Sam. Eileen! God I ship her and Sam, and I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that I don’t ship him w anyone. Liking this ep a lot, every little side plot. Nice. And Eileen is back and I know it won’t last but like, that was awesome.

15:10 The Heroes’ Journey - Pretty neat intro. Monster on monster violence to the sound of Clair the Lune. Oh, and excellent casting of Garth’s kids. Regular people trouble... Awesome! Brilliant! This is the kind of meta storylines this show should deal in, exclusively. Oh my Garth! Explosives! Why isn’t every episode like this?

15:11 The Gamblers - Oh, is this another lucky coin episode? In that case yes please! More inconsequential bullshit kindly! Loving Sam staying in touch w Eileen. Hey guys, remember when you did the gambling thing w your years? And the rabbit’s foot? Good times. Will this be an equally good time? I hope so. A god! Excellent. ”Lady, I’m Tolstoy.” Yeah ya are, and i’m dead. The guys and Fortuna bashing god. And I'm equally delighted and distraught over the lore that god created man, man imagined gods and god decided to create the other gods to play into man’s ideas, or as a distraction.

15:13 Destiny’s Child - Omg the intro! Savage garden! I’m dead. Jack w the sandwich, why is that so funny? Cas is a gem this episode! ”’Sexually intimate’?” Lol. That’s what you get for trying to speak plainly, Cas! Hunter Corp. I’m dead, again. Keep the different Deans and Sams coming! I’m digging this! Why would they send ‘em to Rio? They could be your buffy-bots!

15:14 Last Holiday - Weird people popping up in the hq is awesome. And Dean’s immediate instinct to yell for Sam reminds me of me calling mr mess for everything! ”Shouldnt you be in the woods? Nymfing?” Monster radar? Oh, oh this is excellent. So mrs Butters is capable of murder when home and family are threatened, good for her. They better not kill her. I can accept them returning her to the wild. Yes! Did I call it or did I call it? Good Supernatural, good boy! And Dean making a cake for Jack! My heart.

Fail episodes (in chronological order):

15:2 Raising Hell - Rowena! Instant win. Ketch. Instant lose. Ketch undressing Rowena with his eyes = rating plummeting. Jeez. A bit dangerous even joking about the GoT finale, don’t you think? Rowena and Ketch full on flirting... this is hell, I'm being punished.

15:3 The Rupture - Don’t call him god! His name is Sucky-Chucky. The shock of Cas! “You’ve been playing us the whole time!” This is how it works Cas, where have you been? They're always solving problems like Jason Mendoza. In-Dean-angry-voice: “Anytime I had a problem and I threw a Molotov cocktail, boom! Right away, I had a different problem.” Rowena! And Sam! No!

15:5 Proverbs 17:3 - Listen, spn, it’s your last season and if you like just wanna stop writing and casting women completely rn i won't stop you or hold it against you (also why are these ladies identical?). We’ve had a terrible run but lets just let bygones be bygones.

15:8 Our father, who aren’t in heaven - Gosh, having Eileen in the show is painful, I’m just constantly expecting a piano to fall on her head. *Ugh* Sucky-yucky-Chucky. But hey, at least everybody else looks better alongside him. Case and point: I never rly cared that much for Donatello, but it’s great to see him, and Michael’s back, sure is nice to see him too.

15:9 The trap - Ugh. Main plot shit and Sucky-yucky-fucking-Chucky. Fail. Although the flashforward to jan 6th 2021 was a hoot (but probably not meant like one, huh?) Dean’s monologue in purgatory though... gosh. This show would be nothing w/o Jensen Ackles. Omg the kiss! Nice. However, the show at this point has lost the ability to offer any sort of pleasure. Because like Sam, we know which way this will go. They used to have some hedonism working for the characters but now they don’t even have that.

15:20 Carry on - You know what? I’m not gonna make this post longer than it already is talking about the last episode of Supernatural, that has been done better by people w real grievances w the show. The kindest thing you can say about the finale is that it just as well could’ve been jammed into a few extra minutes added to the previous episode.

Mediocre mentions:

Drag me away (from you) - what is this ugly cell interface? The opposite of product placement. Yay! Retro episode! And they got the same actor to play Dean, neato! Dean admitting he had a hard time handling hunting, that always gets me. Woah! That scream effect without reverb was kinda startling. And the camera zooming in on the little porcelain clown even though Sam is nowhere n- oh shit. This was an interesting episode

Inherit the earth - Goooood I hate Chucky. Barefoot Sam is okay though. Digging this soundtrack too. Very un-Supernatural. Nice to meet ya Betty, but I wouldn’t pull up a chair if I were you. Always a fan of the shiteating grin. Jack, stripping god of his power, that’s so hot. And again: kudos to the soundtrack! The Youngbloods and then Jackson freakin’ Browne! And you know, it’s clichéd and kinda vacant, but also kinda nice. I’m cool with the story ending like this. Why did they have to do another one? Supernatural has never known when to quit, and this is the very real backside of this.

Honorable mentions:

I don’t know who this Ardat chick is but killing Ketch puts her instantly in my win column.

Winchester-dumb, new household term.

”Feels like were taking a big, probably stupid risk. Feels good.” That made me feel good too.

I’m vastly enjoying this dark-art hippie couple in Unity and Jack’s interaction w them.

Cas launching straight into his dramatic I-will-not-let-you-end-your-own-life-speech when Sam casually mentions he’d like to talk to death in Unity, that angel has seen some things, and he has learned.

Those are some pretty pretty death effects on Jack in Despair/The Truth.

Things that makes you go hmm:

Which of the clowns is this supposed to be in Back and to the Future? Because the one from season 2 was a monster, right? So he would’ve gone to purgatory. You know what? I’m not an expert. I try to not pay too much attention ’cause it makes me funny in the head. But just, y’know, a general objection.

Here’s my deal w death as a looming threat in this show: it holds no weight. And even if it did it has been painted as the ultimate relief, unless you go to hell, these characters know for a fact that there’s a potentially blissful afterlife, so their attitude towards death should be, what? More pragmatic, I think. And it’s partly why Ackles is wasted on this show; That man can deliver a death monologue like it’s nobody’s business, too bad all those words have been rendered meaningless after 15 seasons of this shit!

Summing up:

So, I did not go into or leave this season happy, I knew how it would end and I was sad for everyone the show screwed over (more than it already had). Which really meant that I always had to force myself to watch another episode, knowing what was coming. But I had to see it through. I did, so I’ll give myself a pat on the back and get to work on my own personal selection of episodes that will henceforth represent spn to me. A selection I’ll enjoy all the way through. All in all I think the most frustrating thing about the show is how it insists on taking itself so freakin’ seriously. It has always done horror *and* humor best and this whole heaven and hell aspect has never sat right w me, and in any case they should’ve leaned more on “supernatural” narrative tropes (if you will) getting out of their plot problems, gambled some more and thought a bit more outside genre conventions *especially* in their main arcs, they opened up so many opportunities that they never even used. They could’ve been more like Buffy, or Doctor Who. That said, I’ll always get that spn-itch, and when I do, I’ll be happy to have seen all the episodes so I’ll know which ones to avoid.

thank you for the recommendations, I would definitely love some more! and I completely moved away from it too, though I could never really stop thinking about it or missing it altogether hah. and recently I've seen people talk about it again and stumbled upon metas and stuff and now there is a little voice in my head that says "maybe you shouldn't have given up" while another is shouting "have you lost your kind completely now" and yeah. lmao

i know, it feels like a breakup lmao. but if you wanna move on you have to find someone new i guess jkdfjs. in my opinion, or to me it doesn’t feel like a fun time to analyze it anymore so i’ll just start thinking about it if/when sth actually happens. there’s so many stories out there and shows that have actually delivered. but not a lot of them satisfy like the need for deep and meaningful storytelling. i have to say tho, idk if i was just having an emotional week when i was watching i told sunset about you, but that with the 5 movie length episodes that followed the 5 act story structure (ep 4 was fucking low man) was the closest to what sherlock could be. even tho the last episode wasn’t as amazing as i guess i was hoping, it was still really good overall, i was genuinely impressed. i’ll probably rewatch it some time.

there are even some korean shows (with pretty short episodes, all on viki, maybe on yt too): Where Your Eyes Linger (a rich kid and his bodyguard, the power dynamic is ehhh, but it was good), Mr Heart (marathon running, i only had one problem with one moment, otherwise wholesome), Colour Rush (just started watching it today, there’s only 2 episodes out rn)

some japanese ones: Cherry Magic - you get magic abilities if you’re a 30 year old virgin lmao (i was kinda let down with the ending tho it was a happy one, i enjoyed it tho, basically the ‘how is he so hot... and respectful meme’) should be on yt, Life~Love on the line (broke my heart for an episode or so) idk if it’s on youtube but it’s on viki, His (2020) (a movie) very cute but also broke my heart a few times, it’s on yt

a vietnamese movie: Goodbye Mother - a guy takes his bf home to vietnam, he’s not out to his family yet (it was pretty chill, a little sad but the grandma is a scene stealer) it’s on yt

thai bl-s are mostly kinda trash or meme-y and the writing is sometimes actually gringe but they can be fun. some are very questionable/problematic (tharn/type lol) tho lol but if you can write the questionable things out of the story in your mind then they’re watchable i guess. i usually watch them for the side couples bc the main couples are usually boring lol (the drama is unnecessary). the good thing about them is tho that there’s like ~3 gay couples in a show, like almost no one is straight, tho their storylines are sometimes abandoned. they’re all on youtube. some of the ones i liked are

My Engineer (Ram & King are wholesome af, pm only watched it for them),

Dark Blue Kiss (maybe the first one i watched that had a cohesive storyline and the side characters are cool, it has a prequel i think as well Kiss Me Again or sth like that),

2gether (had to push through the first episodes but they’re both pretty much idiots so it was fun, they play guitar).

fave sheith moments👀👀👀👀👀👀?

Thisis a v fucking nice question, thank you. Throws a lot of underappreciatedsheith moments your way. I don’t write metas, nor make coherent commentsever but:

1.- Episode1, s2, is my major fav moment, tbh. it’s the whole’’ if it wasn’t for you, mylife would have been a lot different’’ with that smile!! The fact that the bothof them are worried about each other, the tone of the voices and we see anotherlayer of an insecure and sarcastic/blunt shiro we don’t normally see when heinteracts with the others. I also believe shiro is the type ‘’I don’t wannaworry anyone ever’’ and here he loses it a little. Keith doesn’t even questionit. It’s also a very long and private moment ‘you have given some good advice’ ‘Staywith me shiro.’ Keith is also soosos worried about the possibility of losingshiro, so, like, damn!

2.-Whenthey go to rescue Allura in the last ep of S1, when shiro is having trouble thewholes ‘’shiro are you okay?!’’ and how he just ‘’shiro’s in trouble!I’m going in!’’ and when shiro tells them to go for the princess that he isgonna go for the black lion, keith is just is like ‘’you guys get the princesswithout me’’ and goes directly to push the black lion :’( also, when keith isin trouble, shiro goes to save him and ‘’i got you, buddy’’ :’(

3.- Whenthey go to the space mall, shiro says he gotta work his bond with his lion andeveryone is aware about it. Listen, it’s kinda nerve wrecking for me that shirofought zarkon in the astral plane and never mentioned it, anyway, everyoneforgot what shiro was gonna do except for keith and even asks if he could atthe end work his bond with his lion while everyone else just forgot. I think that also threw off shiro a little haha

4.- Inep12 s2, when they fly in synchrony! when keith goes in this mission where his life is in danger,lmao, you can see how good they’re at their thing, aka, piloting and it’s justso good to see them both doig it when shiro gives him cover. Also, shiro issuper worried here and it’s just so soft for my heart. Okay. call me out on reaching but i love watching them do the thing they like the most, pilots boys 5ever.

5.- Bonuspoint to the hug, the looks and smiles, the two being worried about the other alot, the fact that they’ve stick together for a really long time and thatthey’re together even at the harder times. You mean shiro’s bayard, youknow, the black one? Patience yields focus, WHEN HE APOLOGIZED FOR DOUBTINGULAZ, the touches, that shiro has trust in keith and vice versa, vocally andalso in the acts they do. They know each other a lot and shiro especially knowswhat keith is able to do (read: when he sends him to chase rolo, and intozarkons ship, and finding the red lion, etc.) they have a closer bond that withany other. They speak to each other in a very special way. They have a past™, they have saved the other a couple of times;he piloted the black lion, baby! But, please, let’s not forget they share thelet’s save the universe thing and are aware they need to put everything in evenif it costs them their life.

You just can see shiro matters a lot to keith and theother way around, they constantly have each other in mind and are attentive inwhat the other needs. There are more moments but rn i can only thing of these ones!
