people telling you they reread your fic is the biggest compliment you could ever receive. there are thousands of stories out there begging to be found, to be explored, but your story meant so much to someone that they came back to it eagerly, they went over every word again. to love is to return and loving a fic is rereading it. thank you to all readers and rereaders <3333

“Rory?” Her own voice says, but she’s not the one speaking, he is. “Jess.” She growls, insanely angry instinctively, suddenly. It feels different than it usually does, and it has to be because of the body. Normally anger is a bit like heartburn, but this is all heart, hot, strong, searing. She gasps from the sensation. “What-?” Jess starts, then stops, slapping hands over face. “Wait, wait, wait”, he mumbles, “the headache, I fell asleep in my car-” his words are quick and sound like her. He goes quiet, stops breathing, removes the hands and widens the blue eyes in unmistakable recognition. She gapes, points at him, herself, jeez. “You did this!”
Imagine being stuck in the body of your ex, imagine your ex being stuck in your body.

Broke:
Belle has Stockholm syndrome because she falls in love with the Beast, her kidnapper.
Woke:
Stockholm syndrome was coined to slander a woman who had been in a hostage situation but openly criticized the poor police response which recklessly put her in more danger and escalated the violence. She was then belittled and discredited publically by the police for this.
Tumblr media
So. Yeah. Maybe Belle does have Stockholm syndrome actually.

Trust no fish
Tumblr media
So in Sweden we call each other ”silly herring” - there’s a whole rhyme involved - when we succeed in our april fools day shenanigans. Anyhoo my son decided to simplify the saying into just ”you’re a fish” which I of course found incredibly cute and funny.

I keep thinking about the concept that both Rory and Jess, AND Rory and Logan's relationships have an element of "escapism" to them, but in such different ways... And I think one of the differences is that Rory and Jess want to escape in order to be more fully themselves, and Rory and Logan want to escape in order to be different people than what they are. With Rory and Jess, it's a stripping off of the disguises or armor they feel like they have to wear around other people, shedding the roles they have to play. But with Rory and Logan, it's the opposite. They put on disguises and roles. With Logan, Rory feels like someone more sophisticated and careless and exciting, insulated from the real world and its consequences. With Rory, Logan can pretend for a while that he has a carefree life of his own choosing, without his family's input. But Rory's comparison to "Vegas" in an apt one. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. It's a vacation, an illusion... but eventually Real Life catches up to you. It's interesting that so many of their escapades involve costumes and roleplay. The secret LDB meeting, the Tarantino party, the LDB reunion in AYITL... They are literally playing dress-up. Not to mention the references to Peter Pan and the Wizard of Oz... It's a fun adventure, but it's ultimately a fantasy, a play. None of it is real, and they can't take it with them.
Yes, that's some fantastic meta right there, my mind is literally spinning from excitement right now jajsjshdhehdhehdh. To quote myself: I feel like the main thing about it is that Jess and Rory's world helps them do better when faced with reality, as in they learn a lot almost unconsciously but have fun in the process too. While with Rory and Logan it's more like delaying whatever reality brings. Two different directions escapism can take... Though in some cases, it manages to take both. (but that's not the point here so I'm keeping my Jo/Laurie rambles for later jdjejdjekshwhd)
Okay, so I'd love to discuss escapism in whole here (it's such an enormous source of thought. the freaking complexity! the freaking dimension! it lacks in singular meaning. heck, it can have completely contrasted meanings and still be... the same thing semantics wise. dude! we, humanity needs more words!), but I know I'll run off the tracks if I do that, so no. Not today. But, Rory and Logan seem to do it the Fitzgerald way and Jess and Rory seem to do it the Thoreau  way. The former being more about waiting for something to happen or longing for something to happen but not doing anything to enable that in the real world and the latter being about dissatisfaction with the current state of things yes, and yes creating your own narrative but the kind of narrative that still somehow fits within the bigger picture and helps you grow. Like... there is an actual correspondence between fiction and reality with the latter. So here's a thought: maybe- maybe Stars Hollow didn't feel real enough for Rory? She always had that sense of needing to be "of the world", to be a part of something bigger than herself. That- that Sabrina quote about "learning how to live". That's what Rory wanted. She was dead scared of it, but yeah. That's what she wanted. Instead she was always the main character, someone with a figured out storyline, not just for the audience, but in her given universe too. The princess of Stars Hollow or whatever. So meeting Jess was more like reverse escapism for both of them maybe... Widening of perspective, questioning your views (on both sides), rethinking what you thought you were supposed to be etc. That's pretty eye-opening on its own. The car scene is pivotal in that sense, it's majorly about who Rory and Jess think they should be and who they might actually be if they allowed themselves to go there, wherever there is (more so than it is about romance or the shipping part of it though I suppose it is delightful in that sense too, but then again, I probably wouldn't know). I think that even Jess questioning Rory's journalistic aspirations was good (yeah, he apologises for it but it's still there and it's good) because for the first time she gets to have that. That "maybe there's more to this. more to life." thought, no matter how earth-shattering it is to her initially. And the same goes for Jess in that scene, he's acknowledged by someone from the outside, someone who's not him. And it really is about letting the world in a little, as much as it is about creating a different kind of world with someone, a world that you can come home to. It's just the right amount of both of those things.

We must work. We must make money. But more than that, Bella, we must experience everything. Not just the good, but degradation, horror, sadness. This makes us whole, Bella, makes us people of substance. Not flighty, untouched children. Then we can know the world. And when we know the world, the world is ours.
