Perfect Pitch
Prologue
Tumblr media
A/N: This is just the introduction chapter. If you will be invested in this idea I'll write the entire FF!
Couple: Noah Sebastian x Reader (in which reader is a talented musician and the new member of Bad Omens. This is an Alternative Universe in which the guys decide to pick up someone to fill in for Vincent.)
Content Warning: this FF will include describing different delicate subjects like states of anxiety, depression, gender violence ( bad place, the industry, for a girl) and possible suicidal thought. Be careful if you feel exposed by one or more of this topics. Feel free to write me in PM about anything ♡ Since the main characters of this story are real people, I want to underline that this is the idea I have of them and not the reality since I don't know Bad Omens. I don't want to be disrespectful in any way because I have tons of respect for the guys and their job. I also don't want to dig in their private lives or whatsoever aside the things they reveal by themselves on interviews of post on social, present and past.
Summary:  reader has always wanted to be a musician her entire life. She pictures herself as first chair in a majestic orchestra, but thanks to her soft spot for metalcore, destiny is leading her somewhere special.
....
◇◇◇
The first time you have seen Noah Seabastian, you were in the pit. Vans Warped tour 2017, a fucking hot texan day. You had never heard about Bad Omens before, but they had such an incredible energy on stage. Good enough to surf crowding in front of the barricades to look closer. The bass guitar player smiked at you when he noticed that your shirt was lifted by the continued movement of hands all over your body. In the moment the security put your ass back to the ground you had found a pair of deep brown eyes on you. The singer was asking the crowd to sing along the main course but you had no idea about the lyrics so you simply smirked, lifting all way your tshit and unreveal the bra.
And.... thats it.
Rock'n'roll and a couple of extra beer made you brave.
Nothing less, nothing more.
No hot stories as a groupie walking her way to a bus tour or anything else. Just a glaze, one among millions.
At the end of that hot summer you started to looking for a job after you graduated at Julliard in NYC. It was the best time of your life. You have always been a talented violinist since you were 5. The prodigy from a very small town, ready to astonish New York.
But it never happened.
Always third chair.
Moving around the country as a ball in an arcade grew you tired after 6 months. The low salaries, the necessity of having a home for more than six weeks....
Settle down. Adopt a cat.
You wanted some stability.
So you started to work as a waitress. You have no idea of how you ended again in texas, but life in here is simpler compared with NYC.
Almost a year had passed when you met Shane and Zac. Summer was running out fast when the Oh Sleepers played in the small pub you were working. A couple of words after and a decent amount of good luck brought the singer to share with you an important information.
《 if you can play the bass, I know a band is looking for someone to fill in.》
You can play bass. You can actually play five instrument and sing. This is your only talent. Music. Feeling it. Being able to figure the notes in your head just listening at them once.
The ability of discover a F# when a pillow fall from the sofa on the ground. The ritmic dissonance of a A and a G in your steps while you walk home drunk.
The perfect pitch.
At least, you could work as a music engineer.
Shane was intrigued by the way you tuned a guitar whitout flicking before their show and from your musical curricula. It is far more than it should be in the industry. But he also saw something in you. How much you have work your way though the mud and sweat to end up in a pub, verbaly molested by creepy guys on daily basis.
Such a waste of rare talent.
《 try your luck. That's is his phone number. See if he still wants a replacement or if he's fine with is guitarrist as bass player. I lost track over their decisions, but their good friends of me. The singer slays on stage》
You picked up that piece of paper with a bit of concern. For this guy privacy in a first place but also for you. You were dreaming about orchestras, beautiful dresses with long sleeves to cover your tattoos.... but you have always wanted to be a rockstar.
A queen.
And you have never wanted to be that broke.
So... Why not?
《 alright. Thanks man. Just... what's the name of this guy?》
《 noah. Noah sebastian》.
***
I chose the Oh Sleeper to introduce bad omens to the reader because I've always find this video hilarious. Feel free to give me your opinion about this prologue!

Does the passage of time ever depress you?
You know what depressed me? Being in college with half my department branding me as an undesirable graduate because of my poor grades and trying to boot me out. I was in and out of the admin office managing an appeal every time they kicked me. I was being told things like to be on my guard because I was being watched for the smallest mistake and professors that helped me would get in trouble. It was bad enough that someone raised ethical concerns about how they were treating me.
So one day I thought I'd rather just kill myself than explain to my parents that 5 years of tuition fees went down the drain because I took a course I was warned in high school that I couldn't do. I walked from my department to the road where I knew trucks drove fast and kept nearly hitting me wherever I crossed.
I waited for a truck, stepped out on to the road, then jumped back on to the sidewalk when this seething hatred for my department and academia surged through my thoughts and I realized if I died here then they'd finally get rid of me, but if I walked back and miraculously passed the hell semester they designed, then I'd be in their faces for one more year.
The truck flew past me, so close and so fast that the wind slapped my face. It didn't even bother to slow down when it saw a student on the road.
So I went back, and with the sheer power of venomous, unending spite (and some luck), I passed all my classes while doing both my thesis (I owe my adviser my life for her being so understanding, and my thesis was a truly cool project that sent me all over the place) and my part time job for a nearby indie game dev.
During my graduation, the Dean of Engineering (who I also owe my life to) asked the crowd to raise hands if they were graduating in 4 years. Then she asked for 5. Then 6. Then 7+, with the last batch laughing nervously while raising their hands. Then the Dean said to raise those hands with pride, because even if it took awhile and even if the grades weren't perfect, graduation is graduation. You did it. You're getting that degree.
And thats when it really hit me, you know? At the end of the day, I won. A bit unfortunate that none of my professors attended my graduation, because I really was hoping they'd see me get my degree. I wanted them to see that I wouldn't be there if I didn't learn to despise my department the way it despised me.
Does the passage of time depress me? Sometimes I feel nostalgic. My elementary school is gone now, and my high school is nearly unrecognizable after renovations. I've had difficulties keeping in touch with some friends who I still feel much fondness for, and I wish I had been there during some milestones of their lives. But the passage of time itself? No.
What depressed me was being told that I was undesirable. What depressed me was being told that I was being watched for the smallest mistakes. What depressed me was seeing the years of fluking my way through scholarships and other things meant for genuinely gifted kids and not good test-takers (I was good at memorization) finally catch up to me when my ambitions exceeded my abilities.
Now I'm a working adult with a completely different job using skills I got from the various part time jobs and internships I took over my college years rather than anything I actually learned from my classes. Having a daily grind sucks, and so does things like needing to buy food and pay taxes and all other necessities that shrink your salary, but it doesn't depress me.
Every time I feel down or tired, I recall the time I fucking won and this wide, hateful, bitter smile splits my face in two. I'm still here to enjoy the years go by, seething in my trauma, but still here.
Let me just add that I don't like recommending spite as a motivation. Hatred is exhausting and soul-sucking in a way that nothing else is like, and I'm the sort of person that prefers to find even a little joy in whatever I'm currently doing. I feel like if you push yourself forward through spite, you hollow yourself out and become unable to fully enjoy the good that you find.
I can't however, say that spite isn't real damn effective.
It sure worked for me.

I don’t know why, but whenever I go to the grocery store, people keep giving me money. They just walk right up to me in the parking lot and fork over a couple bucks. Sometimes they act like I should be embarrassed to take it, or whisper something like “you poor dear” as they pass the change and bills into my hands. Occasionally, an angry husband makes me swear that I won’t spend it on drugs. No problem, sir, it’s just going into this shitty Plymouth behind me. Drugs are nothing compared to the thrill of finally getting the horn to work.
Sure, I don’t dress particularly well, either. Grease-stained t-shirts promoting a long-past motorcycle derby from a distant city. Whatever free hat NAPA handed out most recently, also stained with grease and/or shoplifted undercoat. That’s no reason for people to be giving me charity, not when there’s truly deserving people. Admittedly, those people are driving Camrys that were made in this century, and probably don’t have to walk home nearly as often as I do.
Perhaps I’ve gotten off-track a little bit with my life. I should be projecting a lot more confidence in my dirtbag existence. Despite what the nice social workers say, there’s really no law against cornering people at the grocery store and talking to them about six-barrel carbs and mostly-junkyardable Jeep cam position sensors. Then they’d know that they are dealing with someone who Chose to be a complete asshole, rather than a person who is so beaten down by society that they operate a 1970s Mopar product unwillingly.
Trust me: if you knew how much work and expense this thing took to keep running, you’d be throwing eggs instead of pennies. Any sucker can finance a badly-running Highlander from a buy-here-pay-here lot off of Crackhead Street and then go to their three grinding retail/service jobs, but in order to avoid falling out on the highway at one-half road speed, I need to invest the approximate salary and skillset of one highly-trained mechanical engineer. Maybe send some of that charity money to Chrysler, so they can build a better car for me to ruin in fifty years from now.

⟢ - Structure of the 𝐀𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
Tumblr media
The 𝐀𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 operates as a corporation and trust, funding research for various fields of scientific study through grants. It also engages in many different charitable acts related to the rehabilitation and conservation of endangered Pokémon, especially those native to the islands of Alola.
The corporation was founded by current sitting president and CEO, Lusamine Delacroix, with her husband, Mohn Delacroix, serving as vice president until his disappearance. The pair set out to establish a higher standard for how humans, Pokémon and technology can work with one another, while benefiting the natural ecosystems. Aether works alongside many different organizations throughout, and outside of, Alola.
Fields of Interest
The foundation funds projects, research, innovations and expeditions related, but not limited to, conservation, ecology, biochemistry, physics, epidemiology, genetic engineering, and computer engineering. Scientists and scholars from across the globe often seek out the foundation’s funding, traveling to the Aether Paradise in order to meet with members of the board, and Lusamine herself. There is quite the impressive network of intellects connected to the foundation, and it is not unusual to see the Aether seal stamped onto many peer reviewed journals.
Grants and scholarships for students pursuing careers in STEM are also gifted by the Aether Foundation. Many of these students are then placed into internships at the paradise, or in one of the Aether Houses— and funneled into a permanent position of employment upon graduation. The foundation relies on having the most brilliant, cunning minds involved with their projects, and so they make sure to leave a good impression on the scientific community. It is pretty common to see an Aether representative at any major conference involving STEM, or around university campuses.
Working for the Aether Foundation
Employment with the Aether Foundation ranges across different positions— from field researchers, to chemists, to public relations, and many, many more. Those who work at the Aether Paradise work directly with Aether’s conservation programs, vaccination developments, and technology departments. And the genetics program and UB project, if you’re aware of the horrors.
Gaining employment, however, is no simple task. Lusamine expects an impressive resume, and a mind to match, but if somebody passes the hiring process, it is great job security— as long as they do not disappoint her.
All employees are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement upon being hired. All positions are by contract, and salary paid.
All employees are required to submit their biometrics.
The hierarchy
From highest to lowest:
President
Vice President (currently unoccupied)
Branch Manager
Assistant Branch Manager
Divisional Manager
Assistant Divisional Manager
Office Administration
Lead Associate
Associate
Intern
Scientists and research teams are categorized and ranked based on individual projects and assignments.
Accessing the Aether Paradise
If commuting to work, employees have two options: traveling across the water from one of the islands via Aether-owned ferry service, or by helicopter. The ferry service also carries tourists on public access days, so that they can experience the conservation deck, and tour the island.
Aether offers on-site dorms for those who would rather not commute back and forth all week, and for those who are staying on the artificial for an extended period of time for an assignment.
Security
Security is taken very seriously on the island; Lusamine is incredibly strict about it, and intends on keeping it that way.
All employees are assigned key cards, which are required to access all of the rooms and laboratories on the floors one through three.
All of the laboratories and doors on floor three, and in basements 1, 2 and 3 require a fingerprint and retina scan.
Certain high-security areas require two or three employees to use fingerprint or retina scan in order to unlock the door for access.
Higher ranked foundation members and scientists have a chip implanted in their left wrist, which is used as a “master key” to access everything on the Aether Paradise, along with the locks for the Aether House and research stations.
Basements 1, 2 and 3 have safety laser scanners installed that are programmed to scan every room, laboratory and corridor every fifteen minutes. If a persons whose biometrics have not been logged into Aether’s system is picked upon, an alarm goes off, and all doors are locked. Only Aether security guards, or high ranked foundation members, are capable of unlocking the doors in order to remove the intruder.
ALL points of the Aether Paradise have motion sensing cameras and CCTV streaming.
Aether buildings are known for their monochrome coloring and bright fluorescent lights. This is to prevent employees and visitors from finding dark or secluded corners to hide in, and discourages people from attempting to smuggle Aether property. It also makes it easy for visitors to be picked up on by the security cameras; everybody on staff is wearing all white, so somebody who is wearing even the slightest bit of color stands out.
In the case of an emergency, the Aether Paradise is capable of undergoing full lockdown mode. All incoming boats and aircraft are instructed to return to the mainland, and all outgoing forms of transportation are halted.

The Fairy Shareholder
Kitchens Inc had endured another torrid year; the crumbling capstone on a miserable decade. The old board had been out of ideas: revenues were down, profits were non-existent, and the whole company was circling a drain of its own design, making and installation. They could have done with a fresh start, but that had been years ago. At this point, they'd needed a miracle.
"Shall we start with introductions?" It was the first shareholder meeting since the takeover, and board were ready to face judgement. As the shareholder present, Juliana took the lead. "Juliana Merryweather, owner and CEO"
"James Barentin, former CEO," one man followed. He was the spitting image of the company founder, sharing his nose as well as his name. "Now head of sales and shareholder liaison."
"William Barentin IV." The man next to him also shared in both; another chip off the old block. "Former head lobbyist. Now responsible for white goods."
It hadn't always been this way. This had been the first business of its kind in the state, producing and fitting kitchens for office and home, and in those early years the market had been theirs: able to set the price of their wares, and decide where they wanted to set them, with a choice of customers waiting for a consultation. Their founder, William Barentin III, had led them from strength to strength in those halcyon days. There had been a bust of him in the lobby, a sign of their prestige, until the recent desperation had come to pass.
"Blane Lumber, former chair of this office." The introductions worked their way around the room. Blane was another man, this time with no remarkable features at all. "Now in charge of surfaces."
The problem with coming first was that the race never ended. Today, the market was awash with competitors, all with more unique names and better brand recognition: locking down the 'Kitchens' trademark had felt like a coup at the time, but it was less useful in an era more focused on Search Engine Optimisation. It took something more catchy to seize a modern customer's attention, a sense of originality - and being the actual original didn't help.
"Harry Goldman, water tank specialist." Another completely average-looking man. Looking across the desk, Juliana saw that most of the others were. She really had to get better at that, with workplace diversity and all. "I look after plumbing."
Of course, Juliana knew who each of them were, even if a few did look a little too alike. She'd given them their jobs, and given most of them their names. James had brought her in, and survived as the only remnant from the old board, helping with the transition to her new regime. Everyone else had gone, and their salaries had been the first costs they had saved.
She'd actually wanted a complete overhaul, but then James was a salesman, and he'd managed to convince her of what he could add: Juliana supposed she wasn't the first the step into the showroom wanting a clean slate, only to be upsold to the speckled marble tiles and countertops instead. She was glad of him, though. The others could be difficult to manage, and it was good to have an experienced hand to show them how things worked - hands included.
It hadn't been hard to convince him of her own resume. She'd started off as a godmother, like most in her industry, but corporations were people in law, and 'minority shareholder' felt roughly equivalent. They called them angel investors: venture capitalists who came in to support struggling businesses, management consultants who helped them to turn things around. She was a new kind of patron for the consumerist age, giving a makeover to miserable companies and helping to change their fortunes as a result.
Juliana had been used to making coaches out of pumpkins, their drivers out of mice; now she turned them into career coaches instead, or made do with computer mice to drive the business on. It was a massive saving on staff costs. They only cost her an arm and a leg, or two, and the rest of the body to attach them to. She arrived in a shower of sparkles, slashed expenses, found a few efficiencies, and sent them on their way. If that was their dream, even the most down-on-their-luck company would go to the IPO.
"Blane, if you could go first." With the roll-call out of the way, she moved onto the numbers. It was largely good news. "Worktop installations are up twice on last quarter. Are we sure these figures are accurate?"
"Well, we do employ a number of counter-fitters." In exchange for her investment, Juliana had told James she would need a seat on the board. That was Blane. He'd been an office chair until she gave him a promotion, and liked making her regret it. "But yes, business has been good. We've focused on the areas you suggested, and it's really working out."
"Excellent." She turned to Harry, who had once been the office goldfish. "Did the savings on sinks work out?"
"They're still working," he said. Harry had been his original name, which had saved her from having to think of one. He'd always known his way around a bowl, but the promotion had been a whole new learning curve: having to find his feet, and then figure out how to use them. "We have a steady flow of work coming in, but most of it's still in the pipeline. You'll see it in next quarter's numbers."
The puns were a side effect: on receiving the gift of language, her creations felt the immediate urge to play with it, like a child unwrapping a new toy on Christmas morning. Juliana had tried to tone them down, but at the end of the day there was no harm in letting the board have fun, provided the business was running smoothly. They might not be around for too much longer, and they might as well enjoy it.
"Okay, if you're sure." She thought about making a joke in turn, but didn't want to faucet. "But remember what's at stake here, gentlemen. We can't afford to let this company go bust. No offence, William."
"None taken." William was the old head in the room, having been in the company for generations. He'd been the bust of the founder in the lobby, now transformed from marble into flesh: it was easier, when Juliana had something similar in appearance to start from. It gave her more to work with, rather than having to come up with the details by herself.
"I'm confident," Harry assured her. "I'm basin everything on solid data from James's team. And yes, we know the stakes. How could we forget?"
She'd given them that briefing on day one. The company needed to get back into the black before the clock struck year-end, or else the spell would wear off: the business would fold, and the board would return to their original forms. That was their motivation - literally working for their lives, or their new ones, in Harry's case. She'd thrown him into the deep end, and it really had been sink or swim.

advice request: scripts for asking for a raise?
the startup i work at CLOSED OUR FUNDING ROUND TODAY thank fucking GOD, money slated to hit the bank (NOT SVB) on monday!! so i feel that it is an auspicious time to ask for a raise.
i’ve been working there fulltime since august 2021 and haven’t gotten any compensation increases because money has been tight, although i did get promoted to roboticist II in january (the level between new-grad and senior) and they gave me a $10K retention bonus in december. my base salary is $155K, which is what i was hired at as a new-grad with a master’s degree; there are also some stock options (aka “monopoly money”).
i’m thinking i should ask in my next 1:1 with my boss but how do i bring up this topic (“money, fun to have, right? what if you guys gave me more of it — haha, just kidding. unless…? 🥺👉👈”)
how big of a raise should i ask for?? $10K? $15K? “i can’t give you a number, dumbass, try glassdoor”?
i have a strong gut feeling that i suck at my job, which i am trying to ignore as it is contradicted by everything anyone else at my job has ever told me. how do i identify things i have done well to use as supporting evidence, when i query my brain for things i have done well and it says “nothing, you SUCK”
in other respects it is a sort of . awkward time to ask for money because i took most of february off to get top surgery and have been spending more time wfh to avoid getting covid beforehand and to recover afterwards (when i was promoted, an explicit request from the CTO to come in to the office more was passed on to me). should i wait a week or so and try to spend that week in, if you will, a “grindset”, coming into the office more, trying to be unusually productive (instead of unusually unproductive, which is what i’ve mostly been post-surgery), etc., before i make the ask? (my direct boss lives in germany and i believe is fairly indifferent to how often i come in, but the request will probably be passed up the chain to the vp of engineering and cto/ceo.)

Heads Up Seven Up
Thank you for the tag, @ceph-the-ghost-writer.
(Reposting this because I accidentally posted it to @thearchivistsjournal instead of my main blog, so sorry for the re-tags.)
How-to: Post seven lines from something you're writing. Tag some other people (seven, if you wanna be fancy).
Passing the tag to @blind-the-winds, @cljordan-imperium, @tsunderewatermelon, @writingpotato07, @sam-glade, @wildswrites, @void-botanist, and an open tag to anyone else interested.
From the next chapter (13) of Empty Names:
“You spent it all.”
“Yes?”
“You’re kidding, right?”
“Err…”
“You are the most irrationally frugal person I know, how in God’s name did you spend five years’ pay in a couple of months?”
“I’m not that bad.”
“Lacuna.  Sis.  Bestie.  Favorite neighbor of mine.  I had to talk you into buying a frickin’ bed instead of continuing to sleep on a patched air mattress while you were on a paratech engineer’s salary because you said it seemed like a waste to replace something that was technically getting the job done.”

Little red Jeep
Warning: mention of a car crash (no injuries)
“Ohhh…what type of car is that?” I pointed to the Jeep that was tearing down the street. My boyfriend watching it drive by before he stared down at you.
“That’s a Jeep, sweets. You like it?” My arm laced with his as I pulled him towards where the pair of you were supposed to have lunch, shrugging my shoulders but my eyes looking at the cherry red vehicle as it turned left and roared out of view.
But Nikki watched me, seeing the excitement I had for a car, the first sort of question you had even asked about a vehicle in the nearly 20 months the pair of you were together. He knew you couldn’t drive, walk everywhere or let him drive you. But maybe this would be the incentive that I needed to finally get my license.
My feet hurt, half walking and half dragging myself through the posh neighborhood I lived with Nikki. A full day of work as a photographer, doing portraits of little kids who squirmed out of their poses and parents yelling over my shoulder on sing song high pitched voices about “who was the cutest?”
The only thing i was looking forward to was submerging myself into the bath and spending your evening soaking in the over sized bathtub until Nikki had to fish my shriveled body out of the water.
What I’d didn’t expect was loud honking sound and Nikki standing half on the ground and half on the red Jeep, arms in the air as he swore a triumph grin over the car.
“What is that?” I asked when i got closer to it, looking inside and wondering where the doors were and if I was going to fall out when Nikki took a corner too sharply. A real worry because driving with the man was akin to driving in a NASCAR race.
He pressed keys into nyhand and i blinked , half shocked and half unsure what the hell he was going to do.
“I’m going to teach you how to drive, sweets!” The obvious excitement in his voice made me flush, trying to not have a panic attack and pass out in my own bushes.
Driving…big big adventure I particularly didn’t want to embark on but here was Nikki looking so excited with his gift that most likely cost my entire years salary.
“There’s no roof. Should I wear a helmet?” The question made him laugh despite the seriousness of it.
He was too busy taking my bag and helping me into the seat, talking about keeping my left leg off the pedals and which one meant go and which one meant stop. All of it was making my stomach cramp and the dry, sandy taste of panic fill my mouth.
Before I knew it Nikki was in the seat beside me, talking in what was his calm voice. He was calmly explain everything again, trying to keep eye contact as I nodded stupidly wishing we could change seats.
His hand was larger than mine and as he guided me to his ignition I jumped at the feeling of the engine roaring to life under me. Both hands on the steering wheel I slowly started to come to realize I could probably do this. That this would be fine. Maybe even fun.
He was moving it to reverse, my foot on the don't move pedal, easing slowly back as Nikki told me to stare into the tiny mirror I sometimes used to reapply lipstick after quickies in the car. Apparently it was there for driving purposes and not makeup purposes.
Where it all went wrong was when Tommy flew up our driveway in his brand new silver Porsche, sparkling from a custom paint job. My foot came slamming down on the don't move pedal but I hadn’t developed the muscle memory yet of what pedal was where and instead it felt like we were flying backwards. Our seatbelts cut into us as I heard a scream of terror. Maybe it was Nikki. Maybe it was Tommy. Maybe it was me.
The keep was on top of Tommy’s car as I sobbed, hysterically and horrified.
“I killed your drummer.” I screamed out. Nikki, who was looking forward, probably not wanting to see Tommy’s mangled corpse under the Jeep didn’t say anything. He was most likely regretting buying me the actual Jeep and not just a hot wheels version.
Nikki was quiet, the sort of quiet that made me want to puke.
“You didn’t kill me. But your boyfriend owes me a new fucking car.” My head snapped and I saw Tommy lighting up a cigarette as he looked at the wreckage of his car.
Nikki snapped out of it when he realized that Tommy wasn’t dead. He was looking at me now, making sure I was okay before calling Tommy over.
“Help her down and I’ll get the Jeep off your car.” The drummer was helping me down, my knees knocking together as I surveyed the damage from the ground. Grimacing at just how bad it looked from this point of view.
Nikki pulled forward, the crunch of Tommy’s car as it shook from the weight lifting off it. The drummer groaned like it was weight off of him.
I was still crying, less now as the fear of vehicular manslaughter was off the table but surveying the wreckage felt awful. Nikki was shutting off the keep, miraculously I damaged as he slid the keys into his pocket and headed over to us.
“Well…guess we’re buying two cars today.” He said as Tommy shook his head. All of us looked at the mess I had made.
Nikki seemed to realize I was upset at this point and came over, wrapping his arms around me and kissing my forehead.
“Hey sweet, it’s okay. You didn’t do anything bad.” Tommy’s snort didn’t help the matter but I couldn’t see his face because I was buried in Nikki’s chest. “It’s Tommy’s fault for pulling in like a jackass, not yours.” He assured me.
“It was-“
Tommy’s words were lost as Nikki stroked my back. My thoughts of long bubble baths returned and I wanted to be taken away from the wreckage I had caused.
“Why don’t you go inside and lay down, sweets? Tommy and I will deal with this, okay?” My feet Carried me inside.
Like a child in trouble I peaked out of the windows, watching the two men deal with Tommy’s wrecked car. Nikki took him home, coming inside he called up the stairs to let me know he was headed out.
A half hour after he left I was sneaking around my own home, fingering the keys he had left on the counter when he grabbed his car keys. My heart thundered in my chest as I snatched them headed outside and looking at the red Jeep I had crashed earlier.
The feeling of the engine rumbling, my heart racing as I clutched the leather steering wheel. It did feel good and it made me want to try to learn.
“Sweets?” I looked out of the vehicle and saw Nikki looking at me, unsure. “Want to go for a drive?”
The relief of knowing he wasn’t mad. The ability of him trying again made me nod.
“Get in.”

Chapter 8: Aboard the Halberd
(Kirby SST!)
"Raise the anchor, start them engines, Full sails ahead!"
The Halberd surfaced from its underground lair and hovered high up in the sky, the day of his journey has come.
"All Aboard!" Captain Vul commands, waiting for meta knight.
I'll be on my way, don't worry I'll be back before you know it." Meta Knight reassured Kirby
"I'll miss you!"
"Take care and goodluck sir!" Bandana and Sailor salutes,
"Why it's just a month.." he chuckled.
"Make sure to inform me when something happens, adios!" He added, spreading his wings, headed towards an open door of his ship.
Meta Knight closed the shuttle and made his way onto the main deck, he sat to his chair in the middle with Magolor sitting on Sailor's seat and his captain on the other.
"Is the crew ready?"
"Ready Sir Meta Knight!"
"Prepare for take off in 3, 2, 1!"
Meta Knight pulled a lever as Halberd shoots directly on space leaving a huge shockwave to everyone close to it.
They all had to endure motion sickness throughout the journey in hyper speed it's really been a while since they last used Halberd for such a thing. They would have to travel atleast 80 billion light-years across the stars to reach their destination, meaning they would have to remain in a wormhole for as long as possible.
"Gghhhaa!!" The crew held tight on to their seatbelts,
"How many minutes do you chumps could take?" Magolor asked the Knights.
"About 8 minutes or so..don't mind us.."
"Sir Meta Knight I think I'm going to throw up..." Axe Knight muttered.
"Me too.." trident knight added.
"Stay strong everyone! We'll be outside Milky Way in an hour!" Meta Knight encouraged, effortlessly enduring the flight, Magolor operating the control panel like normal almost looking like he was bored, Captain Vul... forgot to buckle himself a seat belt.
"Looks like the captain had pass out!" Sword knight informed.
"Should we help him or?"
"Nah that's just how he is."
Meta Knight looks at his crew in concern as they need to be in that state for a month.
His crew won't really gain anything from doing this mission other than maybe a big salary but he's still putting them on multiple risk just to escort some man home.
☆゚.*・。゚*.✧
"I'll be on my way, don't worry I'll be back before you know it." Meta Knight reassured Kirby
Back at Dreamland, Sailor just realized that she doesn't have anywhere to sleep in when her only room is up in space.
"Is there perhaps an empty room for me to stay?"
"Well there's Meta Knight's or, or you could stay in my room I have a huuuge bed!" Kirby replied.
Sailor didn't want to sleep in her boss's bed that would be embarrassing , she doesn't mind sharing a bed with a little one so she pats his head and agreed.
"Alright! I haven't stepped foot on the castle in a long while, would you give me a tour?"
"Sure thing!"
It was early in the morning that Kirby had time to get the sailor to be familiar with the castle grounds,
"This is where we eat..
This is where the king always hangs,
Upstairs are the rooms!"
Though he was very fast and energetic Sailor could barely keep up.
"How about you get ready for school? It's in...24 minutes yeah?"
"Okay!!"
She took the time to catch her breath as Kirby sprints to his room, she looked at him smiling as she thought about how obedient and sweet Kirby is, maybe this baby sitting job would set sail smoothly.
Sailor then insisted to accompany Kirby on his way to school, she noticed how easily distracted he gets whenever they walk past a restaurant,
*Sniff sniff*
The pink boy's head turns, Sailor is holding Kirby's hand as she feels slight nudges implying that Kirby wants some.
Sailor sighed and opened her purse, she tried to look for some money to spend but there were only coins.
Kirby saw her disappointed expression so he said,
"Meta Knight gave me allowance for the month!"
"Oh golly! But we don't have to spend your entire budget for one day, you won't get to eat extra snacks when you do"
"I can manage Miss. Sailor! I just want one cream puff!"
"I see, but eat it on recess time okay?"
"Aww okay!"
Sailor bought the happy Kirby his yummy creampuff, she packed it on his bag, adjusted Kirby's shirt and combed his hair,
"You'll take it from here? Goodluck on school Sir Kirby!"
"See yaa Miss Sailor!"
The children had gathered around on the schools entrance as a Bandana Dee on a skateboard approaches him
"Heeyyy ya having fun with Miss Sailor?"
"She's very cool! Is she your sister? You two look alike!"
"Nahhh she's all good at maths and I'm only good at fighting there's no way we're related."
Bandana scratches his head.
"Have you two ever hung out?"
"Rarely, only when King Dedede and Sir Meta Knight goes somewhere together they would always bring their personal dees, us, I get that she's nice but we don't talk all that much."
"That's okay! She'll be staying with us for a month, lots of time for you guys to get along!"
"Aight I'll keep that in mind."
"Oh yeah! What you've been up to Bandana? I haven't seen you in class!" Kirby blocked his way to ask,
"Well I'm doing some extra credit ya know? I might finish elementary school right away if i do a good job on the tournaments."
"Finish... elementary school...?" Kirby muttered.
"I have so much practice to do, see ya!"
Kirby was left to think, he felt, empty for a moment. Be shrugged it off and just decided to talk to his friends like usual.
"Kirby over here!"
"Kirby sit with me!!"
Kirby looked at Chuchu and ribbon on opposite sides of the play ground, he didn't want to make one of them upset so he chose to walk straight ahead, avoiding the two parties together, he'd really just rather not hanging out at all than having to choose.
He sighed, all these stress made his tummy grumble, he took his cream puff out and took a bite.
*Munch*
"I've never seen your face look so gloomy" Marx appears sitting beside him.
"What do you want?" Kirby said with his mouth full.
"Well now that you're not surrounded by mortal idiots maybe it's time I tell you my plan..."
"Your what?"
"I've come to realize we both could live forever, out living every single friend you'll ever have. How about we become great rivals?"
"...why?"
"I just want to, you know, make our eternal life not boring atleast."
"I don't want a rival." Kirby angrily replied.
"It's not for you to decide, just wait a century or two, I will be the universe's greatest nightmare!" He grinned.
"Yeah whatever, you know I could just..kill you right?"
"But you haven't!"
"I don't even have the energy to be mad, just leave me alone."
"...don't you care about the universe or something???"
"I do but- no but, jee just stop talking to me!" Kirby yelled, tears almost bursting out.
Marx stopped following him, staring at him in shock.
Kirby didn't enjoy his cream puff in peace, he went to his classroom with his face on the desk, crying and crying and crying.
He didn't want to be reminded that he's meant to outlive anyone, nobody does.
Before anyone could arrive at the classroom to see him sobbing he composed himself, sniffled and wiped his tears. He let out a smile as the first few children comes in with their friends, sitting at their assigned seats like any other day.
Kirby decided he'll be happy like usual.
☆゚.*・。゚*.✧
"Let's see the only description here of Kirby are the amount of horrid villain he fought and his victories, there are no records of his past.." the teacher said as she reads through Kirby's biography.
"Well do you remember your first memory, Kirby?"
"N-no...the earliest I could remember are my times here on Popstar.."
"That's alright! It only means that Kirby here had done so much at a young age! What a true warrior!"
He was praised once again,
It didn't feel as great as it should be, he smiled until the attention to him is steered onto something else.
He hurriedly picked up his things and ran outside the second the bell rings, he sighed in relief as he approaches the school gate,
'Wheres Meta Knight?' he thought
"Oh right.." he muttered as relief turns into disappointment.
He decided he'll just walk home by himself until,
"Haaah..I'm here!!" Sailor Dee rushed towards him trying to catch her breath.
"Miss Sailor!" He was surprised.
"I'm sorry I'm late!!"
"That's alright!" Kirby smiled and held her hand.
"So how was school?"
"It was great!"
"Say, are you missing Sir Meta Knight?"
Kirby nodded.
"Well at this hour we should be able to give him a call, let's say hello when we get home."
"Really? Alright!" Kirby's mood lit up as his he hurriedly ran home, Sailor Dee left chasing him as he was too quick.
☆゚.*・。゚*.✧
The Halberd took a temporary break from travelling in hyper speed, the crew immediately unbuckled themselves to throw up or collapse.
Meta Knight helped his men in their needs.
"Why even work on a battleship meant for space travel if you can't handle the journey?" Magolor said with annoyance as he checks their blood pressure and heartbeat.
"Well get used to it Mr. Magolor it's just the first day innit?"
"Sword Knight is right, Magolor, just have some patience." Meta Knight replied.
"I'm really don't like travelling with an inexperienced crew, get your stuff together and we'll do it again."
"Alright, is everybody ready?"
"Yes Sir Meta Knight!"
"In three, two, on-"
*Ringing*
"It's your phone sir!"
"Yes yes I know, hello what is it?" Meta Knight picks up his phone.
"Hiii!! Where are you guys now?" Kirby greeted with enthusiasm.
"it's Kirby" meta whispered to everyone.
"We're a few light-years away from Milky way, how was school?" He asked.
"It's okay, have you eaten any snacks yet? Did anyone there threw up?" Kirby jokingly asked.
"I have and they sure did.."
"I just want to make sure you're not dead and stuff so, goodluck and goodbye!"
"You too Kirby." He chuckled as he leaves the call.
Everyone stared at him in surprise, mainly because Meta Knight speaks in a different tone towards Kirby.
"You make a good dad sir Meta Knight!"
"Right right let's get back to work, 3, 2, 1.."
☆゚.*・。゚*.✧
"Miss Sailor! Good to have ya today, why did Meta Knight leave you here on dreamland?" Dedede asked as he eats his lunch.
"It seems like he wants me to keep Kirby company for a while, I don't know.."
"But Kirby is fine by his own!"
"Oh I get that too your majesty, but everything lord Meta Knight tells me to do has a reason so I just have to follow him."
"How is he like as a boss?"
"When I was new he was, pretty scary but now he's, he's caring and considerate and kind and-"
"Do ya like him?"
"What? No...noooo of course noooot he's, Meta Knight! Come on!"
"Hehe! I always knew Meta Knight was a charmer even when he doesn't try."
"Ahahaha!"
"Oh right, meta knight didn't tell me his intentions in space I was hoping you know what it is."
"Uhm...it's uhhm..uhm"
"Hm?"
"It's iiiii don't know!"
"He maybe your boss but I am his boss now spill the beans!"
"Aaaaaaa!!! He's out in space to travel across the universe to find Galacta Knight to set him free!!"
"...only that? I thought he was out there fighting some kind of intergalactic war by himself but okay."
"??"
"After all I knew he's going to do something bizarre whenever he gets worked up, typical Meta Knight."
"Y-you're not worried?"
"Nah, from what I heard Galacta is this uhhh hero thing right? Why would I?"
"Oh well..then, it's all good now right my king?"
"Nahh me and Meta Knight will have a looong talk when he comes back."
"...oh boy.." she smiled in worry as she got her boss on trouble.
Kirby and Bandana had already left the dining table as Sailor and the king talked, BWD wanted to show Kirby a new spear move he learned.
"Lemme find my spear for a moment wait here!" Bandana Dee started looking for his spear under the pile of other weapons he has as Kirby took a good look at his room.
There were a shelf full of throphies and medals, all from sport activities, Kirby remembered how he was disqualified from any form of sport tournament due to his natural strength, he looked around even more and there were alot of pictures of Dedede and a handmade replica of his hammer.
"Oi don't snoop there it's embarrassing!
"Oh right right!"
Kirby looked around more and saw marks near his door that has the years written beside them.
"What is this for?" Kirby asked.
"Oh that? It's where I mark my height every year!"
"You sure do grew alot for these past few years..."
"I guess? I can't believe I'm going to highschool next year! I'm going to have stuff like the deep manly voice and get even taller!!"
"Oh I see, that's good..." Kirby said awkwardly, intently staring at how much his friend had grown over the years.
"Are you okay?"
"Y..yeah, show me that cool trick you learned, I'll wait outside."
*Door closes*
"Huh?"
Bandana did eventually found his spear laying around, he showed Kirby how he can fly using his spear as propellers efficiently, Kirby was impressed but the whole day forward he was quiet, stayed on his room until the day was over.

Hi, I was wondering what the work benefits with NME are like. Specifically for like, behind the scenes (for example help desk or as a statistician). Is there paid time off as well?
I've been looking for a new job, but I'm not interested in becoming a monster.
A wonderful question! I'm pleased to hear that you're interested in working with us! It varies from position to position, but personally as a social media manager I receive two full months of paid vacation, on base health care, a private apartment, and a salary generous enough to cover all my needs and wants. As far as I'm aware other employees are paid similarly (though I think our data analysts and software engineers get a bit more than I do :) ). The starbase also holds numerous sporting facilities, stores, and entertainment areas for employees off the clock. We even get to spend time on the surface when we pass by an inhabited planet! The boss treats us very well. Best of luck, and I hope you consider us for your next career!

HI EMMA MY GOOD FRIEND EMMA so I was pondering your beautiful world and it's worldbuilding in my mind and got to thinking. What are it's main methods of communication? Writing? Verbal messages? How accessible are these and to whom? Do they use like, birds or the like or is it a job? Was thinking about this
HI POKE HIIIII💖💖💖
I'm assuming we're talking Ragtaggers here!! And I'm also assuming you're taking about more long-range communication rather than direct conversation and language! And YES I GOT THOUGHTS FOR U
SO within cities, your communication will generally be passed around by written mail delivered by salaried mail runners. There's established mail routes and times through each city, but if you have urgent stuff then you can pay independent runners to take messages faster. In Terrace, the city where the VTA headquarters is, the VTA has their own team of runners specific to the association.
Occasionally, such as through less densely-populated areas, like across the valley where Morningflower is, some people send messages via trained carrier pigeons!
But between cities, over long distances, mail used to have to travel all by animal-drawn cart, usually together with trade shipments of other stuff. However, the pilot and engineer Vlyis (who I mentioned when I was answering Random's question about the tech level) has within the past two decades of the plot started an air-carrier mail service!! Her small fleet of biplanes carry mail across the region to all major cities, which has turned out to be a phenomenal business for Vlyis. Rarely, she'll even transport a few passengers! And she's even partnered with a small printing press in Terrace to start a trial run of the first regional newspaper!
However, due to the limited flight range making crossing the ocean impossible, and because the Night is untraversible, long-range contact and communication between other areas that also survived the day-night calamity is basically impossible

Pine Lake Farewell: Swain
Stella kept her mechanic’s shop, especially after hiring Ginger Newson and realizing the girl showed promise and desperately needed a mentor. Under her patient teaching, Ginger flourished and found peace from her many anxieties in the garage. Stella eventually passed on the shop to her apprentice and retired fully to maximize her right to spoil her grandchildren. But she did still drop in to tinker with the odd engine now and then.
Tumblr media
Leif and Natasha divorced with shared custody of the two kids. (While Natasha never formally adopted Erika, Leif had allowed her legal guardianship.) They agreed to remain friends and, though they never really were, did manage to keep a civil relationship between them.
Natasha quit the school system to focus on her art full-time. She never made much money at it, but the alimony kept her from going bankrupt, and well supplied in fine cheeses.
Tumblr media
Leif focused on his farm and, thanks to a literal green thumb, was highly productive in it. He did try dating again, but found he was too busy for a serious relationship. Even with a Plantsim daughter to help out full time, a farmer’s work is never done.
Tumblr media
Erika had a tough go of high school due to her incredible shyness and reluctance to put more than three words together, which the other teens often interpreted as snobbishness. She did not go to university, preferring to stay home on the farm. In fact, if not for her best friend, Emerald, forcing her to go out once in a while, she’d probably live quite happily has a lonely hermit.
Tumblr media
Jeremy also had trouble in school, but it was because of his incessant pranking and frequent trips to the principal’s office with his best friend and partner in crime, Garrett Newson. His only motivation for doing his homework was the threat of being excluded from the weekly video game tournaments with his dad, and occasionally his super cool aunt...who sometimes would bring a sneak peek of a new game.
Tumblr media
Freyja and Jonah stayed in the city to focus on their careers. Freyja works quite high up in an indie video game company, and though the work probably outweighs the salary, she loves every minute of it. Jonah sold his coffee shop when they first moved and now operates a local brewery on the border of the bohemian and gearhead sections of the city. It’s equally popular with both social classes, and even a few prominent socialites have been spotted there now and then. They adopted a small dog and are happy to be simply aunt and uncle for the time being.
Tumblr media
Thor and his university sweetheart, Ivy Copur, married immediately after graduation. Ivy took a job at the hospital, while Thor ran the sound system at his brother-in-law's coffee shop for a while. But after their first child was born, he quit to become a full-time dad...which was good, because they soon had enough children to keep his Family Sim heart happy. He does occasionally make house calls to tune pianos, however.

Going abroad...
Earlier, we've talked about how there are several dreams that a person carries, it is highly unlikely you don't have more than one dream. Ofcourse, you can rank them in an order where something is more important while others can be just peripheral options in your opinion.
And this blog is about me trying to go abroad, I'd earlier tried to explore options about how I can go study abroad. When I was in 6-7th standard, I'd talk to random people on internet who were from various different countries and I was fascinated with the lifestyle they had while I was proud of how much academically smarter I was when compared to some of older students too. But I wanted to explore, they had places which weren't awfully crowded and they had public facilities which were far better than ours. Yes, every land has it's own shitty side but I am not the one to dig shit when I'm dreaming.
During intermediate, I came to know about SAT exams which must have costed my dad almost 75% of his monthly salary at the time when he had to pay rents of 2 separate stays - me and family, pay for food and what not. We were basically drowning in loans I think but never restricted ourselves from trying to make life big. I gave the exam without much preparation and scores were a little above the average and were just about enough to secure 60-70% scholarship in a few universities in the USA - turns out that even if we were given a 100% scholarship then also my family wouldn't be able to pay for the cost of me living there. I immediately let the thought and dream pack its bag and leave. LOL.
Then in college times I was getting better at Automobile Engineering and was deeply invested into making a career out of it. Europe was a dreamland for cars and once again I started to check where I would be paying the least for education, be allowed for a part time job to pay my own living expenses during the masters degree and things did not fall into place. This time my university grades were not good enough to breeze me through and then pockets were already empty for this sort of arrangement to go ahead with. Plus there was this notion that I can keep trying after getting into job.
Well, 4 years have passed since I graduated and many things have happened, some may be well versed with all of those things but most will never know the complete details until they read about it here in future.
Now after all these years, and all these experiences... I think I want finally want to move out and make new moves. I've evaluated the current situations, the budget and options that are present in front of me. The decision on where to go has been pretty clear after initial analysis - Canada is the only place which checks all my boxes. My plan is to go for an MBA and find myself a job after completion of the course in order to support my family better while live my best life. That is right, I want this for myself more than anyone else. Which is how most of the dreams are I think, other factors like family or future generations will always benefit from the positive outcome.
So.. yeah I have just finished giving the English proficiency tests and it is still a very long way to go. I'd prefer to get admission into one of the renowned colleges and we will find out more in the aftermath.
