would loooove to hear about the tina / jimmy jr. jealousy fic and also the chloise meetcute!
Haha of course, both great options
The Tina/Jimmy Jr Jealousy is on the spicier side, pretty short but still good practice for that sort of thing.
I remember wanting to explore a slightly older them, as well as digging into Jimmy's obvious jealousy. It's a really fun dynamic to write, and I'll post a snippet below for you (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
He didn't look at her, but his hand was tightly gripping hers.
"Oh. Oh, are you jealous?"
"Tsk, of course I am Tina. I can't help it, I just want you all to myself. You mean so much to me, but you seem interested in every other guy you see."
He pulled her closer.
"What do I have to do to get your attention?" He asked softly.
Tina blushed, her heartbeat racing as a comfortable heat settled in her stomach. He was only a few inches taller than her, but as he pulled her tight against him and leaned over, it was the perfect height to look up at him.
There was friction in the air as their eyes met, and Tina smirked as she glanced at his lips.
I don't think anyone will be surprised at what happens next
I think I've actually spoken on the Chlouise meetcute file before, but it's always so fun.
The tl;dr is that Zeke drags Louise to the gym, she ends up seeing Chloe from across the room and not recognizing her. Of course she thinks that she's really attractive, convinces Zeke to help find out if she's straight, Zeke recognizes her and hold it over Louise's head for a while. Louise eventually talks with Chloe and figures it out, but is still way too attracted to her. Cue cute little gym rivalry between them which eventually escalates and there is tension and someone inevitably asks someone out
Tragically, I've only really gotten around to writing bits of the first act, but even still I think it is such and interesting way to bring up some rivalry action for adults who used to know each other but not really. There are a few fun surprising character moments planned for both of them ( ꈍᴗꈍ)

I see what you meant with that tag. The origin of the mummy in mainstream horror started in 1932. most things taken in by western media are distorted by misunderstanding and finding it scary because it is "other" and mummies were considered a thing to fear due to the "curses" that were often found at the site of their burial along with "strange" burial process; the desecration of sealed tombs of Pharaohs with curses written in stone and their bodies preserved in such a way etc the mummy became akin to something between a spurned ghost and a zombie. something to be feared for the sake of fearing death and what comes after. mummies are a heart and an echo and when brought into western culture, a disturbance of peace. theres lots of interesting articles written on mummies in horror. a lot of people think they don't get their due. i think if anything they deserve justice just like so many facets of horror turned into monsters against their will before them. let them have their heart. and their revenge. its also interesting because mumification is not solely an ancient Egyptian process either and can be found in other cultures. but that time in history of western men seeking and destroying to "preserve" history (namely most all history i guess), thats where it takes its roots in media. simply put let the mummy rest. or feel the wrath of their curse.
Yeah. ill be honest, my best understanding is: western "archeologists" discovered king tuts tomb, which was a relatively small tomb but was so influential with being The One that got noticed by the west and kicked off the whole ancient egyptian craze in the west.
It wasnt until a few years ago when i heard criticism abt mummies (i think cuz of the tom cruise mummy movie that flopped lol) that i was like "....huh you're just right..." so i dont have the best grasp of the topic. im just aware of the issue ig
You seem to have a much better and deeper understanding of the whole issue tho. idk abt much of the history of them or influence into horror or other horror icons. and im curious abt your take on "let mummies have their justice and revenge in horror" vs. the "do away with mummies as a horror concept"
I just kinda leaned on "do away with making them a horror icon," im just a white american guy so anytime ppl criticize something harmful or insensitive concerning western impact on the world i just try to listen as best i can rather than like, try and justify or defend the effects as they are today (i see it a lot with "this thing is racist" being met with "okay but no one sees it as racist and im not racist so-" which just, lol is a hill to die on ig). so when i heard the mummy thing i defaulted to "okay we shouldnt encourage mummies in horror"
I kinda feel like mummies less commonely shown in media today compared to vampires/zombies/ghosts etc. idk if its bias or not. if they are less shown tho, i wonder if its companys just not wanting to deal with potential PC issues with it?
Tangent but its always fun when companies end up making a relatively good action for the wrong reasons. like, company decries NFTs cuz it makes them more money, not cuz of energy consumption/fraud/invasion of privacy of personal lives or something, just cuz its money so we get to cheer like "wow your parasitic scum existence helped us! you're still my enemy tho 😌"
With other cultures, the only kind of burial that i saw or learned about growing up was the terracotta army for that Chinese Emporer's grave, which yeah. just kinda shows the bias we have. caring for the dead and the afterlife is a universal trait shared across the world and throughout history

ANNOUNCEMENT: NOT A HELLO, BUT NOT A GOODBYE EITHER
omg hi ... im like . ashamed to come back after saying brief hiatus in october and then disappearing off the face of the earth til FEBRUARY but under the cut i will be explaining myself and the following, if youre interested (and a tl;dr at the very bottom if you don’t wanna scroll thru this obnoxiously long post):
the reason(s) i was gone for so long
what i was doing during that time (its just a personal account yall can scroll past this idrc)
the status of those um . halloween requests
the future of this account
i. so . Hiatus .
i know. i know . i probably mentioned it when i made the announcement post, but my mental health likes to go on one of those rides. yknow the ones where you go like up rlly fast then down maybe and then up then DOWN .... its like that. i needed a break and every time i wanted to come back or thought about it, something would happen and i would get stuck in my own head.
a big reason for getting stuck in my head was (and i hate to admit this ... i hate to admit that i have Insecurities On The Internet) my feelings of inadequacy regarding my writing. i love to plot fics, i love concepts and characters and making little headcanons but i dont ... know if i love writing rn. and i thought for the longest time that like . whatever ill just push thru it its fine ill be fine but it kinda wasnt lmao you can kinda see it in my halloween reqs and what become of them when i get to that but i began to feel like nothing i had put out or would put out would hold up prose wise (and normally i dont feel like this im much more “idc its my life im living it” but thats not a rant for tumblr LMAO). i still feel like that -- like im better as a reader than a writer. but . You Know :-)
tl;dr: mental state go brrrrr
ii. anywhere here’s wonderwall
when i left, i was in a steadily decreasing mental and emotional state, made worse by a situation at work that really was a case of petty jealousy on my end and rlly isnt very consequential now despite how much pain and resentment it gave me when it Was a problem so i wont get into it. the tl;dr of november and december was me using work as an crutch and distraction -- i know my job, i do it well, it helped me not think about my responsibilities and obligations and inadequacies. of course, as the holiday season grew busier n busier i was scheduled so often that i moved 88 or so miles (according to my apple watch, which i ONLY wear at work since im never anywhere else outside my house) and fell into a cycle of showering n sleeping at my house before going back the next day. (theres definitely something to be said abt capitalism and “grind culture” here but once again its not the time or place snsjkdfds)
at the turn of the new year, i happened to remember a birthday card i hadnt filed away for safekeeping from a friend of mine that id been horribly out of touch with til that point. i started crying because i realized how out of touch id been in general up until that point. the month of january was great for me: i was focused, happy, and in a much better place than i had been before. the end of it brought me down focus wise and im hoping that enough time away from my distractions will refocus me bc i ... need it LMAO and though ive burned out from that level of productivity and gotten distracted again im ... trying to stay positive which i think is the most i can do 😁👍🏼
media wise, i got real into stardew valley (but burned out bc i played it extensively as a way to wind down after work), the pokemon platinum romhack renegade platinum (still havent finished it bc of school n i played it w the intent to see if i could nuzlocke it ... bitch its so hard but its so fun bc of it), briefly assassins creed: odyssey (im one of those ppl who completes an entire region before i move to the next so you can tell i burned out of that one + wouldnt have the time to properly devote to it even if i didnt), got back into genshin impact after pulling for xiao (after not touching it for like . months), and danganronpa. yes . danganronpa 😐 i Know. i stopped playing it after the second trial of the first game bc i was so hurt by the outcome and picked it up in late january only to get sucked in (thank god i had the foresight to buy the second and third games during the steam winter sale). rn im at the start of chapter 4 if anyone wants to come in my asks and um . talk to me abt danganronpa
tl;dr: I’m Into Danganronpa Now
iii. you realize halloween was three months ago right
i mentioned this in the first section, but i love to plot things. every request is plotted or at least has a solid foundation. i had fun detailing what concept i wanted to go with considering what i was given, and there were some bangers i might touch up in the future. but heres whats going to happen to the requests themselves:
there are two finished requests. one will be posted tomorrow and the other will be touched up (just bc i finished it doesnt mean its good 🧍‍♂️) and scheduled for next saturday. as for the ones i never got around to ...
i will not be finishing those requests. i hate to be That Person, but i feel like we all expected this 🧍‍♂️ what i will do is post all of my notes for each request in batches -- requests that have an @ to go with them will be mentioned in the post proper, but anon asks will be pictured. (there are some asks that came from blogs who are now deactivated but i wrote down all the prompts and remember most of those askers so ill cross that bridge when i get there) there will most likely be an excerpt or two simply bc i think i mightve written a few plot points or interactions in the form of bullet points. i rlly am sorry about doing this but i remember looking at my notion doc with all the prompts and feeling ... like i wasnt measuring up n it wasnt just to myself or to some intangible concept of “other” id constructed but it was instead to those who requested n actually WANTED to see and hear and read my writing and i ...... im gonna admit thats another big reason i avoided this site.
regardless, youll definitely get what i have (and likely more than just my bullet points and illegible handwriting).
tl;dr: im sorry. what i have in terms of plot, concept, and interaction for every request will be posted, but i cant say ill ever complete them and mean it.
iv. so what now?
well i mean . im not entirely sure how sold i am on haikyuu in the content creation department (as a creator n to a lesser extent, as a consumer). as mentioned previously, its no longer my primary focus. it doesnt mean im not into haikyuu anymore; i have a lot of love for those boys but i cant rlly say im even caught up w recent fandom activity and also havent even finished s4 pt2 LMAO thats on my to do list
and despite all that, i still want to share my plots n concepts and snippets and maybe even fics. it wont happen anytime soon. it might not even happen. but i mean . its better than me saying i wont write ever again shjdkfs but either way ill probably use this blog as a personal blog w the occasional ask game for dialogue prompts (those are always so fun i love making up aus to fit like . the most mundane prompts)
as for my works (past and any potential future), ive opened an ao3 acc here n ill be editing n possibly expanding on my old works to post there. tumblr, to me, is The x reader hub, but i figure more x reader fics on ao3 is never a bad thing.
ill be deleting/posting drafted posts to the queue since they were all meant to be queued anyway as well as (sorry again 🧍‍♂️) deleting or answering asks in the inbox. (moots if you get a notif from me saying i rbed your post from months ago ... mind your business) im very hard to get ahold of and its ... a problem. expect an overhaul of the nav n shit to reflect my new direction n also because i feel like i cant tell if my passion for carrd is shared by the majority HSDKLFS maybe its better to read my info in a normal post ykwim .......
and of course . if youve read all this n decided im no longer worth the follow, i sure as hell cant stop you. thank you for wanting to, at some point, hear what i have to say -- it means more than you think.
tl;dr: writing will be edited and reposted to ao3, this blog will be a personal blog with a hint of writing (sometimes)
Tumblr media
the tl;dr to end all tl;drs:
im back! i wont be as active as i used to due to a lessened interest in haikyuu in general, but i have an ao3 acc now where all my past work will be edited, possibly expanded, and reposted. any future work will also find itself there. my halloween requests will be posted in batches as incomplete concepts, plots, and snippets of scenes; i wont be promising to finish any of them.
there are still fic concepts im attached to and want to finish, but i cant promise any more writing on my end. this blog will be a personal blog with maybe writing, not a writing blog with my personal thoughts all over it.
regardless if you stick around or not, its been crazy sexy cool (equal emphasis) being on haikyuu tumblr even tho i wasnt around for long ... even tho its not my main focus anymore, im still excited to see what the future might hold 🤝
love, ari 💌

(1) Okay, so I had an idea and had to share it with someone. You know how everyone in the Phantom Thieves has a problem relating to their parents? i.e they're dead or they're shitty people. I thought "What about Ren?" And had an idea. What if he has helicopter parents? His entire life is being controlled by his overly protective parents. I mean, in the Shido flashback, Ren says he needs to hurry home because he's late, perhaps a curfew set by his parents?
(putting this under a cut bc its a bit long!)
(2) and it could potentially explain why he doesn’t get any calls or texts from them. What if he got himself a new phone number when he moved to Tokyo, just so he could have a year of freedom from his parents’ oppressive ‘protection’? It would also explain why he never really talks about them as well, he just doesn’t really want to. That’s why he probably loved meeting Ryuji: because he doesn’t give a shit about rules. He’s the perfect best friend for someone who wants to rebel.
(3) and then I thought palaces. What if his parents had a palace? What if Ren got curious and checked their names on the Metanav and heard the words ‘candidate found’? I thought of 'Parents’ names, tower, Ren’s location’. What if Ren ended up just needing to know about it and went to investigate by himself because he didn’t want anyone else to know about his parents? But, then things go wrong, he loses his phone and ends up trapped in the palace
(4) The Phantom Thieves figure out what happened after Futaba and Morgana stumble across Ren’s phone and find his search history in the Metanav and of course rush in to save him. I thought it would look similar to a fairytale castle but different to Kamoshida’s palace. For example, a more blue/green colour scheme with more gardens and thorns, think Sleeping Beauty’s thorn fortress. And in the center of the castle is a huge tower. The parents’ shadows are king and queen, and Ren is the prince.
(5 and final, sorry for so much) the treasure room would of course be at the very top of the tower. And you know the bird cage theme from Yukiko’s palace in P4? Yeah, add that in there, and guess who’s stuck in the bird cage? Yep, it’s Ren. (Symbolism, am I right, fellow writers?) For the boss fight, I imagine the parents merging into one and transforming into a dragon, sticking with the fairytale theme. And can you guess what their treasure was? But, of course, it’s Ren.
-
Anon, I like this idea a whole lot!!! Let’s talk
Akira having helicopter parents to an extent of them getting not just a pair of shadows, but a joint palace is actually super concerning?? Just what kind of distorted desires were they forcing onto their son? Lots of the shadows we see in just mementos can be pretty severely bad, and we do deal a little bit with some of that scary parental helicoptering with Shinya and Hifumi’s mothers (though it wasnt really the main point for either of them), and both of them were only mementos requests. So thinking about the fact that somehow these two have created such a twisted palace revolving around their son… thats a little horrific. Especially since you mentioned Akira would be the treasure, so he is literally the source of the distortion. What kind of life was he living with them? It makes the situation of Akira drastically trying to cut them out of his life for even just a year more believable, and more saddening. Since he changed his number, that may have made the palace even worse, since they didnt have that source of contact. They may have been trying to keep tabs on him through Sojiro, since it seems like theyre at a point where if they didnt know what he was doing up there, they’d probably storm up to Tokyo themselves. (theres also the fact they both share a palace which is an interesting concept to think about, despite whether or not it could happen)
The palace being a tower where he is locked inside for protection made me think of Rapunzel. Obviously theres differences in the story, like the King and Queen arent the ones who locked her up, but theres a similar vein there. On that note though, Akira being the prince to their king and queen is, while incredibly aesthetically pleasing, maybe not as accurate to their relationship… Something like royal guards/retainers may be more fitting. Only in that a King and Queen are not inherently there to protect and monitor their prince. They can do that, but it isn’t their base purpose. The relationship between King/Queen –> Prince is, at its core, Mother/Father –> Son. But they seem to view themselves more than that, guardians in more than just the parental sense of the word. So, something like two knights, who’s core ‘desire’ and sole purpose is to protect their prince makes more sense in my head (OBVI this is ur au and im not trying to say that was a bad idea at all!!! I think that also works very well!!! im really just articulating some of my thoughts here cause i really like this whole idea).
I do love them merging kind of as a final form in the last battle into a dragon, because it also sort of shows a certain mental awareness of what they’re doing to their son? Lots of fairy tales (looking at you, Shrek) have a dragon who mercilessly protects their princess like a sort of treasure, and its never in a positive sense. It shows that their over protection is more than just innocent concern over their son. It’s an obsession. Their way of life. He is just their precious object.
The treasure being Akira is very fitting in that way. Especially, I think, if it was specifically a very young version of him. Just a little child, who needs protection and safety and care. That’s where all the distortion began.
All in all, anon, don’t apologize for the long ask bc this kind of stuff is SO up my lane and i loooove it. It gave me lots to think about and actually got me pretty excited thinking about writing some of my own au’s in the future so… thank u for that!!! This idea is super duper fun!!!!!!

hi yes hello that hollow knight/rvb art made my entire week and is delightful. All of those designs are perfect, A+, gorgeous. Do i spy some of simmons' mask on Grif? that's brilliant!! Also Caboose is big and friend shaped, perfect for carrying Church . if you have literally any thoughts to share on that concept I would adore reading them, because every single design is so good
SORRY i took a bit to answer this i had to organize my thoughts and then got busy and distracted...
ok first of all god this ask + the tags some of yall left on the original post have been the most validating shit... i was not expecting ppl to be All About my very self indulgent nonsense
and: yes thats bits of simmons mask on grif! i just like trying to find ways to incorporate bits of human face hcs into my weird au designs. the reds n blues are always fun to interpret in wierd ways bc theyre nicely color coded, and fandom interpretations of their appearances allow for nice varied silhouettes to make them distinctive from one another on a way thats not present in the actual show!
(and caboose is big for hugs! thats just a constant!)
okay. so. i actually have a few ways i interpret this au?
number one is a bit more freeform, bc its just inserting the cast into hollownest while the knight and everything else is taking place in the peripherals. i think this one could have some really fun interactions with canon events. maybe the bgc is just scraping by somewhere, maybe howling cliffs?
version two is more a replacement au! church replaces the knight and oh god oh noi like this one bc theres a lot of potential with the absolute bullshit these guys could cause, and also carolina as hornet. just think abt it. church is so much less.. capable? then the knight, so he gets an entourage of idiots helping him scrape by all the shit that happens in game canon. hes really not a great vessel for the job, considering hes complete dogshit at combat. i dont even think he has a nail. how did he even last this long jesus christ. either way he probably pulls a s13 epsilon type sacrifice in the end hyuuuuuu
basically, both ways, church is just a very lucky vessel thats just been wandering around. maybe being out in the wastes fucked with his mind, bc he thinks hes actually a normal bug. much like the knight, i think he gets called back by potentially the radiance, not that he really understands this. theres something to be said about being not quite a facsimile of a person and walking around thinking youre normal, only for events to tell you, quite suddenly, that you are not. also church can do weird void shit and possess bugs, which is the only way he can potentially talk. church tries his damndest to get his point across otherwise
id say more abt the rest of the reds and blues, but i think im gonna post more abt them and some other sketches ive done in other posts! basically ive thought abt this au a lot
(and sorry if this reads kinda disjointed)

i just started reading your blumenthal kids reunionfic and i LOVE IT! Its so good and so full of potential and angst and I LOVE IT!!!💞💞💞 The way you write Eodwulf is soooo good hes such a mess and so gay help him. and Astrid Omg... I cant wait for more of her i checked out some of your posts on here and shes just great??? You've clearly put a lot of thought into them with the child designs and stuff, did you have any major inspo for the two of them like songs or other characters and stuff???
hey tumblr dont…delete part of my answer what the heck
anyway!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH,,, ed ( @tactfulgrimalkin ) is the one doing the actual writing but we plan everything together and i edit and do artwork so he deserves lots of love for the great writing…i dont remember what else i had here before tumblr deleted it so i hope thats the gist of it
eodwulf is a gay disaster of a bastard man and astrid is SO fun and im SO GLAD UR EXCITED TOO BECAUSE WE SURE ARE
anyway you just opened pandora’s box and i’m very sorry for the length of the rest of this answer but here we go prepare for some cursed content necessary to answer that question ( | ) w ( | ) it was a Wild Ride getting these two characters to where they are boy howdy
so the thing is in order to explain how we created these characters i actually have to get into the origins of the fic on the whole because the two are inextricably linked, and also, the origins of this fic are incredibly cursed and you can send all ur hatemail right here go on blast us we’re ready
but we were talking about caleb and how we’re both excited for whenever astrid and eodwulf turn up, and the thought came up for basically the rough skeleton of that scene in chapter 2:
“hey how messed up would it be if instead of them both hunting him down like we’re expecting…one of them comes in with a huge savior complex and sincerely thinks he’s delusional and should still be in the asylum, how MESSED UP would that be”
…and then shortly after that, this happened
Tumblr media
thats the cursed part dont say i didnt warn u but listen you know we’re right
also that pic of caduceus didnt exist back then i went back and got this screenshot just to share the curse with you all
ANYWAY
in classic us format we got carried away and eodwulf got slotted into the role of that scene in chapter two and his character was largely developed around that scene, like, what kind of person would still be clinging to caleb after all this time to that degree to make that happen? and what was come up with was an extremely avoidant person clinging to a fantasy version of things wherein they don’t have to fight
(eodwulf was developed into a Person before astrid, i should note at this point, and ed did most of that developing; i took point on astrid later on)
but around this time i went “screw it im gonna do some concept art we’re both in too deep now” so here’s some of that for u guys
started with them all as teens and did a couple sketches as well as one of baby (well. teen. so baby) caleb/bren/we were calling him felix at the time as some of u probably already know
first draft had astrid with longer hair than eodwulf lmao check this out
Tumblr media Tumblr media
flipped the hair length on those two which was for the best because at the time we were imagining eodwulf as a bit more mischevious which is another thing that got reversed over time now astrids the prankster and eodwulfs the overworked mom friend because bren takes astrid’s ideas and makes them SO MUCH WORSE but he still looks better with longer hair and then i played around w/ colors for a while and wound up w/ this
Tumblr media
voila, the initial kid concepts, to which subtle yet vital changes were  made after time. if any of you are curious about if im frustrated that that’s still the best i’ve ever drawn eodwulf’s nose the answer is yes. yes i am.
astrid’s hair is not messy enough, theres not enough freckles, and she does not look ready to fight the entire world for a dare. 0/10.
anyway then i did adult versions which look WAY OFF NOW LMAO
Tumblr media
eodwulf with way too much beard, looking far too messy when he ought to look very clean so that he can hide how much of a disaster he actually is, and also a glimpse into the very boring Ice Queen/Heartless Bitch we vaguely had astrid as to start with. even more out of character tho is the earring, astrid as she is today would absolutely never tolerate an earring unless she absolutely had to, girl’s got sensory issues but she didn’t back then. ALSO STILL NOT ENOUGH FRECKLE
anyWHO a while after this it was decided that eodwulf has ADHD, something both the authors have a whole lot of lmao, and that was the point where ed REALLY took off and developing eodwulf went out of control and we both went Well I Guess We’re Gonna Have To Write This At Some Point Now
and with that happening is when developing astrid took more priority i think, because man, at that point in the game she came way too close to that really  annoying trope that shows up in fanfic a lot wherein The Girl is A Bitch who is Getting In The Way Of ~*The Yaois*~ and thats like, thats bad. we knew from the outset we were absolutely not setting this up as a love triangle because we both hate those but even w/ her having no romantic relationship to either of the two, like…she was kind of just There and the one who was most loyal to trent (the only thing of her original characterization that really stuck, honestly) and sooo boring????
so like, and i say this honestly, i managed to COMPLETELY FORGET that “reverse sasuke” cursed comment from the beginning of all this and STILL go “well what if we made her more like caleb’s rival that’d be fun”
and that’s how astrid sorta wound up accidentally morphing into the Scrappy Underdog of this anime trio and calling her a naruto analogue is extremely cursed but also not inaccurate tbh
started out with the concept of her popping into bren’s window because she heard they were doing magic and wanted to learn it too and evolved from there; we decided that she was gonna be neurodivergent too but, hilariously, initially that she was “the best at pretending to be neurotypical” (WE COMPLETELY REVERSED THAT AND IT IS FOR THE BETTER. SHE’S SO MUCH MORE FUN NOW) and made her also autistic because it one meant she could be like SAME HAT at bren really hard which’d make her feel more like part of the group instead of just the odd one out, and two because it fits with the whole rivals thing
branching off of that we made her just. INCREDIBLY direct. like. astrid’s thought process is “how can i accomplish what i want accomplished with the smallest number of steps? what are the consequences of doing it this way? do i give a shit? no? im gonna do that.”
(which is why she climbed a tree to get into bren’s attic instead of using the door because that way she just completely skipped having to convince his mom to let her in)
i cant get into it much here because so many spoilers and we’re gonna explore it all, but like, astrid’s backstory turned into this exploration of the intersection of sexism and ableism especially as applied to a medieval-esque society in which the word “autism” doesn’t even EXIST and in which a convenient double standard exists Right There in the form of bren and like,, its gonna be good guys im excited for it
as far as characters tho she does also have just a touch of Vimes from discworld to her, albeit like, she’s lawful evil to his lawful good, but she’s got the same tendency to stick REALLY FIERCELY to the rules that she thinks are important, even when they inconvenience her, even if it’d be so much easier to bend them just this once
and for songs i cannot link like any astrid songs because they all might accidentally give away so much BUT I CAN LINK AN EODWULF SONG
youtube
this one was HUGE for him
uhhhh i think that’s everything i can think of that we can say right now unfortunately so i’ll end this with a comparison to the current teen designs we have now that are being used in the actual fic, even tho im not fond of how bren came out in this picture, but like, for the sake of comparison
lets see how far we’ve come

Pop Culture Paganism: a ritual investigation
Ever a skeptic (and also a witch, go figure) I like to see and feel things myself to believe its worth it's altar salt. Ive decided to do a little investigative journalism with this pop-culture paganism stuff. I have to admit, I’m 33, I’m getting older, more eye-rolly and stuck in my ways. I’m also still an open minded person, so I wasn’t going to let myself get stuck. I’ve always tried anything once.
Tumblr media
I've never been the best fan-girl of Pop culture, but if it came to something that I've done religiously for over a decade, can mouth lines of it like a prayer, occurs every few months, starts with the veneration and pomp of a Pope’s visit with popcorn- it would be watching The Fifth Element.
As if it was the first time, every time.
Tumblr media
One thing about the Fifth Element- either you love or you hate it. Isn’t that the way it is with worship or religion for most people though? Spirituality is very much about personal perspective and feeling. Also I’m still old for picking something not modern, but hey, I’m trying. There are still hordes of people who dress like the characters of the movie at Comic Con, so there still is definitely a cult following!
The Plan
I don’t usually do extensive planning in my spells or rituals, they come pretty naturally. In this case, I had to make a little list the night before so I could make an honest attempt at this new type of ritual in the morning. Also, what a perfect excuse to watch my movie again.
Now, if you know anything about the movie... the supreme being who is destined to save the world, Leeloo Dallas (played by Mila Jovovich) is the embodiment of the Fifth Element, Love. What could be better to meditate on? But in this case- though I love me some Leeloo, I was going to focus on becoming the Fifth element of love.
I’ve decided to use my element stones as I would my crystals, to power up my intentions and body. As an herbalist and spiritual naturalist my daily worship is nature based, so using something elemental does make the new PCP trial a little easier to digest. A few years back my father and brother had taken a week to mold, carve and paint one of the best gifts I’ve ever received: replicas of the four handmade element stones. (Okay, I am a fangirl, happy now?) They had even wrapped them in blue to look like the Diva’s stomach!
Tumblr media
Besides “multipass” and “chicken, good” there’s not a whole lot of super serious inspirational quotes to dig through. But with love being the centerpiece, you don’t need it. It’s what drives the story.
One of the Mondoshawan aliens in the movie sacrificed itself so that his knowledge of the Fifth Element would be passed down to the priests. It states “Time not important, only life important.” Going on this and collecting a few different ideas, I found my mantra.
The meditation part of my experience was immediately apparent: Diva Plavalaguna’s song, performed by Inva Mula. God, I couldn’t wait until tomorrow now.
The Experience
For my ritual, I set my stones up as they would go in the movie, with me in the middle.
I put on the Diva’s song
I ceremoniously placed a feather on the air stone. I used my moon water for the Water stone, I used altar salt for earth, I lit a small candle on top of Fire. As I sat in the middle with my eyes closed, I meditated, used mudras and swayed to the concept of love.
I whispered my incantation-
“Time is not important,
only life is important.
I am a supreme being,
I am born to protect.
There is no future
Without love.
I am love.”
In all honesty- I cried a little. The memory of yesterday’s rudeness from someone at my child’s school came to me. I left mad at him, I went to bed scorned. Today, I let it go. I gave him my love. I realized I hadn’t done a loving-kindness meditation in a long time, and it was very overdue.
Tumblr media
Closing Thoughts
While only slightly disappointed a ray of light didn’t beam out of my mouth and destroy all the evil in the world- I’m fairly pleased with how it turned out.
In a way, pop culture witchcraft isn’t much different than self-care, celebrating you and what you love. If someone asked me about how to use PCP in their daily life, I’d recommend to start small, do research, and start with something you’re definitely passionate about.
While I don’t think I’ll personally be adding in pop culture references to my daily rituals, the experience itself was refreshing and reminded me I need to meditate more. I can see why others would use it, especially fun young people finding their way in this world. It’s something that can connect you with so many others who share your passions, yet does have the potential to be a valuable addition to someone’s self care regimen- Just don’t let the act only consume it’s true meaning to you. In my case: love, understanding and compassion hold a sacred space in my heart.
Now excuse me while I eat some chicken and watch my damn movie.

The Five Minute Bard: Resources to Create Sharp Concepts in No Time Flat
Image Courtesy of Pixabay “I’d like to teach the world to sing, but they’re all tone deaf.”
If your table is anything like mine, bards are primarily known for romancing their way out of combat encounters, only to have to then combat their way out of those romance encounters when plans inevitably go awry. There’s nothing wrong with that if your group enjoys following the exploits of your own personal pratfalling Mata Hari, but bards have a lot of potential to deepen gameplay in other ways. This article explores a few ways that bards can uniquely add to your game.
Musical Plot Lines
All over the world, since long before the advent of widespread literacy, song, poetry, and performance have been used to remember the history of nations and heroes; there’s no reason why in games such epics (and the rascals who know them well) can’t provide context for the rivalry between royal families, hints about the weaknesses of an ancient evil stirring after centuries of slumber, or even direct instructions as to how to make it through a trapped dungeon. Fantasy writers from J. R. R. Tolkien all the way to George R. R. Martin and N. K. Jemisin continue to use ancient stories, songs, and phrases in this way to flesh out the worlds of their novels (in particular, Jemisin’s Stone Lore could drive an entire campaign just by itself).
Songs are great for this purpose, as they can be scattered earlier in a campaign (or even a session) in the background, providing foreshadowing or clues for players without necessarily being obvious about doing so.

For a non-fantasy example, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson did a great job with his “Dead Man’s Chest” song. The few lines from the novel were later expanded into a poem/song by Young E. Allison, and it’s well worth listening to the whole tune if you ever need to populate a sunken pirate ship with a bunch of undead with distinct and gruesome wounds.
As much fun as Treasure Island is though, my favorite source for musical inspiration will always be the Roud Folk Song Index. This catalog of English-language folk songs has tens of thousands of entries tailor-made for the fantasy gaming table, though many of the songs have topics and language that you may not want at your table. These songs have the advantage of usually being just obscure enough for your players to not already be familiar with them, but omnipresent enough to be vaguely familiar — songs as recent and popular as “The Streets of Laredo” and “Scarborough Fair” descend directly from entries in this index.

If you want to jump in right away, my favorite songs from the early list are “Three Ravens/Twa Corbies,” “Two Sisters/The Wind and Rain,” “Cruel Lincoln,” “The Elfin Knight,” and “The Female Highwayman.” Any one of these songs can pretty much be dropped into a campaign unchanged to add a subplot or additional character, and it’s well worth diving into them — at the end of this article are a couple of resources to help you do so if you want.
Tactical Cacophony: the Music of Battle
In most if not all tabletop games, bards are simultaneously performers and magic wielders, capable of turning the tide of battle with either their music or their spells. This role is well-supported by old legends about bards, though like most low-level bards in modern games, apparently they spent much of their time insulting rats to death.

For a more grounded approach, you can also consider bringing in more martial applications of music. Horns, fifes (single-tube pipes), drums, and bagpipe music are all well-known accompaniments to ancient battles, providing everything from marching cadence to tactical signaling. These real-world examples can be a great illustration of and justification for Bardic Inspiration and similar powers for those groups that prefer to have detailed or evocative descriptions of these powers in action.
More spectacularly, bards may have access to instruments that serve a secondary function as weapons (or vice-versa). Using real world examples, bards could be familiar with a shakuhachi or a musical bow. The shakuhachi is a nearly two-foot-long flute with a heavy, bulbous tip. Played as a form of meditation, by some accounts, this instrument could also be used as an effective bludgeoning weapon, making it easier to smuggle into areas where characters are expected to disarm.
Musical bows are either dedicated instruments or converted hunting bows that are also a stringed percussion instrument with the addition of a resonator.
Of course, if your DM is more whimsical (or forgiving), bards always have the option of a flamethrower guitar or a guitar shotgun (if your group allows the guitar shotgun, let me know if you’re looking for a player).
Extra Credit: Bringing Custom Music to the Table
Okay, to be clear, obsession with bards aside, I have all the musical and rhythmic talent of a harmonica in a clothes dryer. The last time I tried to sing in public, the guy running the karaoke turned off my mic.

Originally, I was going to try to learn how to play the ukulele and re-do “Twa Corbies” for this article, but apparently, you can only learn that instrument in an hour if you have some minuscule fraction of ability to begin with. I have never been so disappointed in Amanda Palmer (NSFW language in video).
If you (unlike me) know one end of a musical instrument from another, doing something cool and ambitious like writing alternate lyrics to something from the Roud Folk Song Index would probably be pretty awesome. But if you can already do that, you probably wouldn’t be reading something called “The Five Minute Bard,” so let’s move on, shall we?
For those of us who don’t already have a great deal of ability, but want to come up with fun little tunes for our gaming groups, there’s something called Common Meter or Ballad Meter “tune swapping.” Songs using common meter (and there are a lot of them) use the same rhythm and rhyme patterns, meaning they can easily be swapped out for one another. This can be a fun party trick (singing Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” to the tune of the “Gilligan’s Island” theme is a hoot no matter how you look at it), but it also means you have a library of tunes and lyrics you can swap out with one another without any of your players realizing it. Here is an interactive example. A small selection of songs or poems in ballad meter is below:
“Greensleeves”
“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”
“I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from “The Lion King”
“The House of the Rising Sun”
“Oh, Susanna”
“Yankee Doodle”
“America the Beautiful”
“Amazing Grace”
“The Yellow Rose of Texas”
Pretty much any famous Emily Dickinson poem
The Pokemon Season 1 theme song
So with that in mind: a super quick-and-dirty (and entirely untested) method for creating music for your group:
Identify what you want to sing about.
Identify a tune you like, or a couple of them from the list above. Mash them together or hum them until you’re comfortable with the results.
Shamelessly raid the lyrics of the other songs in the list for turns of phrase you like, and shoehorn them in.
Where necessary, swap out words to hide the source of your song or create new rhymes. If you’re looking for a quick and dirty way to hide clumsy rhymes, be sure to use the word you’re trying to rhyme with as the second word, and the clumsy imperfect word as the first one. So if you’re trying to rhyme with “mockery,” but can’t think of anything to rhyme it with other than “crockery”, you would do something like “The battle raged among the crockery/until the villain lost through vicious mockery” (Thanks to Rachel F. for that hot tip).
Bask in the admiration of your gaming group. Or dodge thrown shoes, depending on your level of ability and the patience of your adventuring party.
Bards aren’t everyone’s favorite character class, but for those of us prone to a certain amount of mischief and scenery-chewing, they’re just too much fun to pass up. Hopefully some of these tools make it to your table, whether in the form of new tools for your bards to use, or in musically-themed adventures.
For those of you who play bards in your own games (or cringe at others who do), what do the bards in your home game bring to the table that no one else does? How do you make your games more musical?

Every Folk Song: a podcast that promises to go through every song on the Roud Folk Song Index until the host gets tired of doing so — even though it only gets to song 11 (“The Baffled Knight”) it’s still a darn good podcast.

COMIC TEA PARTY START!
Good day everyone~! This week’s Comic Tea Party is now officially beginning~! Today we are discussing Woohooligan! by Samuel Dealey~! (http://www.woohooligan.com/) For those new or in need of a reminder, discussions about the comic are freeform, so please feel free to bring up whatever you wish. However, every 30 minutes I will be dropping in a discussion question to help those who would like a prompt. These questions are totally OPTIONAL to answer, and you can pay them no mind if you wish. If you miss out on any though, they’ll be pinned for the duration of the chat once they’re posted~! Remember, constructive criticism is allowed, but the primary focus here is to have fun and appreciate the amazing comics that the community makes~! As a bonus, each chat a top comment will be picked and featured in the archives and on an ad for CTP! All that being said, let’s get started and have a great discussion!
QUESTION 1. What is your favorite strip in the comic so far and why?
SamDealey
Hey, everybody! I'm Sam! Don't worry about me being here. You can ask me questions, give advice, dog on things you didn't like, or just ignore me, however you prefer.
Also, feel free to contact me if I can help with any of your projects (research, promo, tech, etc.) -- and you can get me on Twitter here: http://twitter.com/datafaucet
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
glad you could be here again sam!
lets see. i think my favorite strip is actually one of the ones that was super early on: http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/4 as a fan of perspective, i really just enjoyed that play on words since ive always thought vanishing point was a....strange choice of terminology for the concept. so i enjoyed seeing it taken super literally XD
SamDealey
A lot of people have said they relaly prefer either the early stuff or the late stuff... my style has changed a lot.
Yeah, that vanishing point strip isn't very widely popular, but a lot of artists really enjoy it.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i can see why theres that preference difference. the switch the late stuff was a bit awkward since it became more focused. but i think both sides have their merit. though admittedly in this case i do think a lot of my fave strips were the ones earlier on.
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/23 that one as well was one my favorites. my family is 1) both cursed to never understand technology and 2) generally unwilling to listen to me. so man do i wish i was that guy who would reply so sarcastically and lead them astray. XD too identifiable
SamDealey
I also went through several visual style changes that were caused by changing tools... I switched to all digital when I couldn't find an affordable wide-format scanner in 2009, did some stuff for a while in Adobe Illustrator (and colored in Photoshop), then switched to Manga Studio 4.5 ... even the upgrade to MS 5 I think unexpectedly changed some things.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
WLLO
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
its bound to happen naturally anyway for a comic as old as this one. ppl change, but that also makes it interesting to watch. especially since your comic is one that will tackle current activities so it can be an interesting time capsule of sorts to see how humors and situations changed.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Oh hey Sam!
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
welcome super~!
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Thanks!
Sorry I'm a few moments late, was catching myself up on some art but I'm here now!
SamDealey
Hey, Justin! I think you might be the first one here.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
lol
Looks like I am
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
any favorite strips youd like to share super?
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/313
This one's pretty good.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
that one made me feel bad for telemarketers XD if only cause most of the ppl calling are sadly just trying to make a living. but i do enjoy that disintegration image XD
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
For a sec i thought that was a guy using a fidget spinner.
SamDealey
lol @ fidget spinner ... yeah, it's been shared a few times, but I hadn't heard much commentary on it... I don't really have anything against the people who work in telemarketing either, I just thought it was a fun joke about what sometimes feels like our societal priorities.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Lol
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
ah there is one strip i wanted to ask a question about
while youre here
SamDealey
Please do.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Also sharing another one I thought was pretty clever
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/308
though I would never replace a computer with an iPad
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/238 this one with ayn rand. was there a lot of dialogue on this page just because there needed to be a lot of dialogue or was this intentional as an homage to the fact that ayn rand's novels are chalked full of monologues?
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
brb, need to go do something real quick
I'll be back!
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
QUESTION 2. Besides characters in Amity’s storyline, there have also been several other recurring characters over the comic’s history. Whether old or recent, were there any characters that you particularly connected with? If so, what about them connected with you and/or made you laugh? Are there any characters you’d like to see make a return in some fashion, and in what way do you think they might still have potential? Lastly, in regards to Amity’s storyline, what other famous people do you think might pop up in hell and what do you think will happen with them?
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Hiyo... I made it, but I only had a chance to read the series through to about comic #120. ^.^
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
thats okay. at least thats something
glad to have you here math
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
My fave comics are actually the ones with the parenting. I particularly liked the "grow a beard" one (I don't recall the number) as it ended up having a callback in a later entry.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i really miss that sophisticated zombie who was fighting for zombie rights. for the shallow reason i really enjoyed his personality.
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Nigel was cool!
SamDealey
I wish I had been that meta on the Ayn Rand pages... heh... they're super-wordy like that because I had a hard time figuring out how to make her explain her "philosophy" more succinctly
Thanks, Math!
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I obviously gravitated to the parenting ones what with handling the 6 week old here, with a name very similar to 'Alex'. ^.^
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Oh hey a Math!
SamDealey
Ayn-Rand Libertarianism was very deliberately added to that story though -- it's a part of a longer meta-theme in that story about Heaven and Hell and our concepts of morality
Oh, yeah, the conversations with my oldest daughter. heh...
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/306 How'd I find this strip
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I'm leery of the political ones, I admit. I get the reasoning for them, of course (I tend to read the commentaries too, which is a large part of why it takes me a while to archive browse) but they make me facepalm more than smile.
That said, Nigel as an avatar for immigrant/racist tendencies was kind of genius.
I like when it's subtle that way.
Well, subtle in my dictionary.
Oh, and to be clear, I'm not facepalming over the comic, it's over the sadness of the world we live in.
SamDealey
@✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨ Question 2 - ummm... I don't know that I'm any more connected to any specific recurring characters than others -- I think I can see splashes of myself in most of them but in a really generic way, like basic humanity type stuff
Thanks for the clarification, Math!
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I guess I've enjoyed Alex as a recurring character.
SamDealey
Oh, yeah, I don't relate to my daughter at all.
<sarcasm>
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Lol
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
ah that strip was definitely topical @Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨ . reminds me of waking up everyday seeing trump in the news doing something. @SamDealey darn it. ah well. it kind of works as an homage to rand's monologues anyway. thank you for answering though.
i did enjoy the strips about alex though. i thought that was just nice and heartwarming
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Yeah, Trump's life is like, documented to end and back
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I wonder if it'll be in my future.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Have millions of people documenting every single pun you make?
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
No, conversations with my daughter related to my writing and math comics.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
probably. O_O i mean you have a daughter so step 1 down that road is complete
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Sounds reasonable
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I remember when I first started reading, I was amused by Death in a couple of the comics. With using the opportunity of a reaped psychiatrist for a session, and commisserating with Rudolph.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Death vs a super badass Rudolph
sounds like some kind of sitcom
SamDealey
@✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨ - Are there any characters you’d like to see make a return in some fashion, and in what way do you think they might still have potential? The princes of hell haven't appeared much lately with the exception of Lucifer -- they do have some involvement in the continuing Hellbent story. I've also thought about more Nigel strips where he struggles to work with other people on a PR campaign for zombies that involves the creation of a TV sitcom about a zombie family
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yes. zombie family tv sitcom
that would be amazing
especially if theres a forced laugh track
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
By the way, what was the deal with some of the comics saying "alternate ending in the comments"... was that only on deviantart?
I want to make a Rosanne joke, but I think I'd regret it.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
The world must have zombie sitcom
heck if we got a sitcom about dinosaurs what's stopping the undead from getting a chance to shine
and the jokes would be built around them being undead and general horror tropes
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
(The Rosanne joke is about the zombie sitcom, not alternate endings.)
I've been reading onwards in the background, and just got to the Klingon section. Ohmygawd, Klingons with doe-eyes.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i enjoyed the klingons strip. i just really enjoyed how it was framed cause i think it made the jokes work well
SamDealey
@✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨ - Lastly, in regards to Amity’s storyline, what other famous people do you think might pop up in hell and what do you think will happen with them? The current official title for Amity's story is Hellbent (I know it's not readily apparent). Most of the famous people in Hell are there as a counterpoint to show that anyone who's remotely interesting doesn't get into heaven. They mostly don't plug into the plot in a meaningful way, but just are there to remind you that the interesting people are in hell, like Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe playing poker with Pappy, or Freddy Mercury who was just a punchline. It's implied that Amity slept with Jimmi Hendrix and Katherine Hepburn has become an odd kind of mother-figure to her (though Hepburn avoided having children throughout her life). The only other historical figure I currently plan to include for plot reasons is Nietzsche (god I can never spell his name)... I don't want to give too much away, but remember that he talked a bit about "the soul" and Ayn Rand really idolized a kind of misconception of his idea of the ubermensch -- "superman".... oh, and related to that also Atlas and I think Hercules, but they're only going to be on one page.
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Ayn Rand meets Superman I could see.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yes i was hoping for nietzsche!
throws confetti
QUESTION 3. Though much of the comic series is non-sequential humor, the latter half of the series features a continuing story line involving Amy/Amity and her experiences in Heaven and Hell. What do you think will happen with Amity now that she is pregnant? Will she keep the baby, or will she decide having a child with Lucifer is too difficult? If she keeps it, what do you think the consequences will be? Do you think Amity will ever see her grandmother again, or will her grandmother stay in Heaven? Additionally, do you think Amity’s new reputation might get her into trouble, and if so in what manner? In general, what do you personally take away message wise from this storyline?
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
alas not the question for you math XD
cause this is the latter half
SamDealey
@MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑 re: Klingons - Thanks! re: alternate endings -- for a long time I published alternate endings as voting incentives on TopWebComics -- you could only see the latest one. I still do it occasionally, but the bonus panels or alt-endings are now on Patreon, where all the backers have access to the whole archive. A lot of those alt endings and bonus panels are also in the books whether printed or electronic.
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Yup, I'm not that far yet.
SamDealey
I also give out vol #1 for free to subscribers on my Woohooligan Weekly Dick Joke Advocate newsletter. http://woohooligancomics.tumblr.com/freecomic
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Ahhh, I see. Incentives is clever... it's nice when you have enough of an audience for that.
Though I suppose this is a heck of a looong runner. I'm impressed by that.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
in regards to question 3, i think amity will keep the baby. and i look forward to the baby shower. O_O gotta invite everyone who can make it entirely too awkward
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
The Vegas strip I just got to reminds me of the Yuri/Yaoi one from much earlier. I liked that one. (Those who know me know I'm always up for some yuri.)
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
since math is still on earlier strips. http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/123/ i liked this skyrim one cause thats not where i expected the joke to go at all. never know what to expect when it comes to the arrow in the knee meme
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
....I phrased that very badly.
SamDealey
@✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨ That's a lot of questions, but I think I can answer them in pretty short order here: - Amity is currently worried that she's carrying the antichrist -- I think that's warranted -- I don't want to give too much away about that plot, but Lucifer confirmed it's his son in the latest couple pages. - Keeping the baby and/or consequences, well -- spoilers. -- which of course means now you know the baby will be born - Amity will see Nanna again -- it's an important plot point, followed by some fun sex jokes - So far the trouble Amity's reputation has gotten her into has been largely self-inflicted -- she's become paranoid that Lucifer's billions of children are going to mob her, except that Delilah, who she knows is one of Lu's kids has already said basically "you get used to a lot of bullshit rumors around my dad -- it happens". But with her now carrying the baby in particular, that doesn't mean Amity's going to be less paranoid. - Messages taken away from this story? ... I don't know about "taken away" since I'm writing it, but I will say that I know what will be on the last page, and I bawl every time I think about it. It's not sad, just ... I hope it will be moving for others as well.
@MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑 re: long running - Thanks! I feel like I've not done a great job of keeping up with it -- like, when I did my latest Kickstarter I had it on hiatus for about a half a year. I'm fulfilling it now and just getting back to creating new pages. That's why it's only 317(?) pages after 12 years. If I'd published 1 a week consistently, it would be over 600.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Oh wow
also that comic
This is why you wear knee guards
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Eh, real life happens. I've had my comic on and off a bunch.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yeah no shame in that. its better to do projects like this at your own pace, whatever that pace needs to be.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Agreed(edited)
SamDealey
Oh, you meant "I'm always down on some yuri"
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
>Two females interacting >"Is this yuri?"
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i was glad that amity bonded with delilah. but i also just like delilah cause she was a surprisingly down to earth character.
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Pfffft.
Now I'm at the Nerdgasm set. I have been to some of those kinds of panels.
SamDealey
@✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨ Aww! Thank you so much, that's such a complement re: Delilah.
SamDealey
Delilah is a succubus and although she's not central to the plot, I hoped I could do some justice to addressing kink-shaming and sexual double-standards.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
ooh?
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i really enjoyed in nerdgasm that part where they were like "the homestuck panel moved" and then suddenly the room empties. it reminded me of how 2 real that was back in the day where everyone and their mother was into homestuck and cosplaying trolls.
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
A succubus as a recurring character sounds interesting.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yeah i really like delilah all around. cause i do think shes a good avatar for sexual double-standards and i also like her dynamic with amity cause of the whole dating her grandfather thing XD
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Makes family reunions awkward.
SamDealey
There will be a baby shower -- it won't be large, mostly the princes of hell, or... well, 4 of them will be there... Leviathan (Envy) won't fit in the room but will send a gift (snake oil) - Satan (Wrath) doesn't do babies, but will go half on a gift with Scratch (Greed) of war bonds. Bubby (Gluttony) will give her a live pig (he thinks it's better fresh), I'm not sure yet what Mody (Lust) will give her, but suffice to say it will be creepy... Lucifer will get her something as well, but I'm also not sure what yet, and Belphegor (sloth) won't be there, because Cthulhu fhtagn
Pappy, Delilah, Hepburn and maybe Nanna will be there...
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
maybe Nanna?
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Asmodeus?
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i dont think this will be a relaxing baby shower
will grumpy cat be invited? O_O
SamDealey
Asmodeus is Mody -- Lust

QUESTION 4. Though many of the comic’s strips revolve around nerd culture, there are also tons of strips that are topical to life, current events, and history. Were there any of these kinds of strips that you felt were personally relevant to you? What did you think of some of the more serious strips (like the one about trickle-down economics)? Regardless of strip type, were there any titles that caught your eye and made you see the strip differently? Finally, since we’re speaking on humor, were there any jokes that you struggled to understand?
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Anything Trump related, lol
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Ahhh, I see.
Oh, I'm pretty sure I miss a large chunk of the jokes. It's a bit different from my sense of humour.
SamDealey
Yeah, tackling trickle-down economics was interesting, because it's one of those subjects where you can kind of expect to not get much traction, but as I get older, I feel like that's one of a handful of subjects not getting enough attention, and I thought if people enjoy Adam Conover, then I should be able to get people interested in important subjects like that
I just now realized a lot of those questions aren't directed at me.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i really liked the visuals you used for the trickle-down economics one. i think they were well-chosen and well-placed to help explain things
thats ok
SamDealey
Thank you!
I am a huge fan of Conover's work by the way.
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I've reached Canada Day. We try.
I found reading your answers to the questions interesting, for what it's worth!
SamDealey
Thanks, Math!
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
ive overall enjoyed the breaks into the serious. i think theyve been interesting and well-researched. and sometimes its also just nice to break from comedy for a second
SamDealey
@✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨ Did I throw you with any of the titles?
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Wait, there's alt-text on these too?! When did that start? (Sooo much depth to all this...)
SamDealey
lol -- I don't remember when I started adding alt text... and I'm not sure if my most recent pages have them either...
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I'll echo Rebel on the well-researched part. It's the sort of thing that stands out if it's not there, but is easy to miss when done right.
SamDealey
Oh, I've also started publishing more comedy in other mediums lately as well -- prose on my Tumblr, and some YouTube videos -- currently working on a YouTube about free speech
Here's a recent one about alt-right propaganda
https://youtu.be/Xy0Barrlw3U
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
nah i wouldnt say thrown. i thought they were interesting for some of them and just had good plays on words. http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/80/ like that one for instant since its playing on the phrase "to hell with TOPIC HERE" and turning it into a jersey joke. XD
SamDealey
I know -- it's not comics.
Oh, yeah, back to Jersey
I'm not sure how many people noticed me using "rigor" as a slur to tie it to the word nigger
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
That's exactly the sort of thing I'd miss.
SamDealey
short for rigor-mortis, but convenient that it rhymes
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Did someone say YT videos?
You should try to see about making dubbed/animated versions of strips
SamDealey
The YT vid I'm working on right now is way too long -- I need to kill about 50% of it to get the length down to reasonable
I'm not sure if I'll delve into trying to animate any of my strips ... genuine animation is too labor intensive (I know, my oldest daughter, Alex does it), and I feel weird about still frame panels with voiceovers
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
thats fair enough. animation is a lot of hard work.
i didnt notice the rigor thing sadly. mostly just cause my mind read it as "generic insult slur"
like if you yelled banana angry enough you could probably turn that into a slur
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Maybe you can hire Alex to do it.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
so didnt connect with what it was standing in for
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Banana republic?
SamDealey
I love the phrase "GOAT SUCKER!" as an insult
It's the literal translation of the word "chupacabra"
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
Things I learned from watching the X-Files.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yeah. goat sucker always struke me as a funny insult cause of that XD
SamDealey
Ha! I didn't even know that was in an X-Files episode... I've seen a lot of the series, but not all of it
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/209/ this is another strip i liked since ive been trying to find some of my faves. this taps into every problem ive ever had with zombie movies, particularly that last panel.
SamDealey
I never did see the fluke man
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
I tend to either see all of a series or very little. It was a fluke. ^.^
No Nigel cameo there?
I've reached 200, woo.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i have to admit i was expecting nigel there
but then nigel didnt come
and i shed a tear inside
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
The reversal of expectations.
SamDealey
Nigel cameo in what?
Oh, the zombie movie thing
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
r.i.p. Nigel
SamDealey
Yeah, Nigel doesn't really fit in zombie movies -- he would just be giving it bad reviews on Yelp.
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
SJ: That's zombie humour for you.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Yup
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i hope his reviews sound overly fancy with lots of big words
ah this reminds! i also liked see moneybags a lot. what a perfect stand in for basically rich corporations.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Cools~
SamDealey
Oh, Uncle Pennybags from monopoly?
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
I was surprised to see him actually
SamDealey
I always draw him with a monocle -- he's never had one in any of the official Milton Bradley merch
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
One of the things I want to address before the end here is the obvious passion. Not only in terms of some of the details in the comic art (from fake twitters to shading) but also the commentary afterwards. Lots of work went into this.
Kudos.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Seconding that, there's lot sof entertaining fun to be had with this series and I hope you never let anything stop ya, Sam.
SamDealey
Thanks, Math!
fake twitters?
Thanks, Justin!
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
One of the comics I saw in the last hour or so had a fake twitter feed... all about foodstuffs.
I remember the most random things.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Np!
SamDealey
I've found often that the pages where I have lengthy commentaries end up being shared a lot more -- like, I was really nervous doing a passage where Amity talked to Trayvon Martin, but those pages ended up being shared a bunch
MathTans the Pun 👑Prince👑
You have a pretty amazing fanbase.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨

Why were ditching Demo Days
Ross Baird Crunch Network Contributor
Ross Baird is the founder and executive director of Village Capital.
More posts by this contributor:
I started to realize that Demo Days might be getting stale when an investor at one of our events told me to share the highlights after the pitches were done he would be out in the hallway with a beer.
Another time, an investor said he wanted to quit his job and build a startup that goes to pitch events on behalf of other startups. Id make a killing taking a percentage of the prize money! he told me. These things are rigged!
Think of a startup pitching for funding. What comes to mind? Its likely the Demo Day. A startup stands onstage, going through slides in front of a packed room, with expert judges onstage ready to give feedback. Maybe theres some prize money. Its an entrepreneurs best shot at getting the funding they need or at least some attention.
Except, as we at Village Capital have learned, Demo Days are not the best way to help most entrepreneurs get the funding they need. And in the long run, they are not helpful for investors, or the broader ecosystem in fact, they aggravate blind spots that investors already face.
Thats why we made the decision to ditch the Demo Day and why I encourage others to rethink how they support innovation.
Not to rain on the parade
The Demo Day first became popular in the late-2000s when a nascent group of entrepreneur support organizations, most notably Y Combinator, Techstars and 500 Startups, started to run structured programs with batches of startup companies: accelerators.
An accelerator typically works with a fixed number of companies over a fixed period of time, usually around three months. At the very end, the accelerator will usually run a Demo Day or Pitch Day. They announce an open-to-the-public, or at least open-to-investors, event. They gather key investors in the room and parade entrepreneurs onstage, with each founder pitching their companys concept with slide decks. Sometimes there is a grand prize for the company selected by a panel of judges.
Nearly every entrepreneur support program I know has adopted this format including our own.
My firm has run more than 75 Demo Days over the last seven years. Weve held Demo Days in concert halls in southwest Virginia, on college campuses in Miami, in wedding halls in Northern India and in co-working spaces in Accra. Were usually able to draw a crowd, and most everyone has a great time.
But over time, weve learned that Demo Days arent actually accomplishing what theyre supposed to: helping entrepreneurs raise money and meetinvestors. When we surveyed our companies and asked them where theymet investors, it was rarely at an actual pitch event. And the format privileges the ones who pitch well, rather than the ones who have the highest potential.
Recognizing the habit of pattern recognition
Investors, facing an onslaught of knowledge, often result to quick heuristics to make decisions. These heuristics can be helpful. From dont take candy from strangers to big animals = dangerous, heuristics have helped us as a society for thousands of years.
But as Whartons Laura Huang writes, in a pitch event format, these heuristics may bias against the best entrepreneurs. In her work, Whos the Most Attractive Investment Opportunity of All? Good-looking Men, she found, for example, that among businesses with similar fundamentals and markets, attractive people got funded more than unattractive people, and men were funded more than women. Overall, less than 10 percent of startup investment goes to women and less than 1 percent goes to people of color. And 78 percent goes to founders from three U.S. states.
The best investments happen because of relationships, not pitches.
Huang found that pitch formats exacerbated this bias: The same business pitched with a mans voice got considerably more interest than when it was pitched with a womans voice.
For entrepreneurs who dont pitch well or who dont fit investors mental image of a successful entrepreneur Demo Days may hurt more than they help. The preparation teaches entrepreneurs to focus on transactions more than relationships (when, in reality, an in-depth conversation after the pitch matters a lot more than the pitch itself).
The Demo Day format is not ideal for investors, either. If youre picking who pitches best, not who runs the best business, youre not getting the best results. You often have to sit and listen to a bunch of companies that dontfit your investment thesis in order to hear a few that do.And if youre caught up in the theater of it, you may not be making the best decisions on who to follow up with after the event.
Moving past pitches
So what can we do instead?
The best investments happen because of relationships, not pitches in fact, Ive never seen an investor make an investment decision, ever, as a result of seeing a pitch.
We realized that if were going to organize a day-long event with entrepreneurs and investors, and we have limited time and space, were better off creating space for investors to build relationships.
We didnt come to this realization alone. Emory University and the Global Accelerator Learning Initiative conducted an independent evaluation of our acceleration programs over the past seven years, and we learned the single activity that had the best results for entrepreneurs was building one-on-one relationships between entrepreneurs and investors.
If youre picking who pitches best, not who runs the best business, youre not getting the best results.
So instead of Demo Days, we changed the signature activity at the end of programs to something we call Investor Forums in order to provide initial diligence for investors, help startups improve their business and provide anenvironment for investors and startups to get to know each other.
First, we invite investors to meet with each company in the cohort for 20 minutes and ask initial questions. Next, we host mock board meetingswith investors and potential strategic partners, in which the entrepreneursdiscuss and receive feedback on one strategic challenge. Finally, we host adinner where the investors and entrepreneurs get to know each otherbetter a form of soft diligence.
This process is better for entrepreneurs, becauseit flips the power dynamic: Instead of standing onstage, racing through slides and beingpeppered with hardball questions, the entrepreneur and investor are sittingat the same table, the entrepreneur is leading the meeting and they aretalking through the business as equals. And they get to show skills likecritical thinking, relationship management and the ability to take and deliver on feedback: all more closely related to success than a slide deck.
Its better for investors, because instead of sitting in an auditorium, half-bored and half-interested, they can take a deep dive and add value.
Ultimately, were seeing this format yield more funds raised for companies: a better outcome for the region.
Improving the odds of success
Im not saying that entrepreneur support organizations should stop pitch events entirely. We continue to do public events to promote and celebrate startups; entrepreneurship is hard work, and most days are not that fun if youre the CEO of a startup having a community around you watching what you do can be fun. But at these events, the entrepreneurs talk for a minute, rather than five or 10, and dont need to prepare for weeks.
When were dealing with our most limited resource and time is always a limited resource we see other ways to be helpful to entrepreneurs and investors. Our mock board solution is just one idea; Ive seen other good ones, ranging from investor office hours to full-group design sessions.
Overall, if we want to improve the odds of entrepreneur success, we can innovate not just in the products and services we support, but also how we discover, develop and invest in companies. Getting rid of Demo Days is just one way to start.

all of them >:3 all the asks
OH WOW THIS BLOG’S FIRST ASK !!!!! OKAY VERY LONG POST AHEAD🕸 1. Who’s the oldest character of yours that you still use?vincent and francis! my boys have been through a fuck ton of development, from halloween of 2015 to now.. they used to be youtuber ocs, and.. well.. yeah i love them both with all my heart!!!⭐️ 2. Who’s the oldest character of yours, defunct or not?a pegasus named raven who is highkey defunct  (mlp oc oof) but lmao her story makes me think i should give her an arc, and maybe put her in another form.. 💡 3. Has creating a character ever made you realize something about yourself?a bunch of times this has happened actually.. vin made me realize im not straight, nargis made me realize im not cis at all, and vin/nate really made me realize how much i self-project, esp in vin’s case🦋 4. Any minor characters that have either taken over or branched off into their own stories?nar was originally supposed to be a very side character, but his concept hit me right in the spot and i wanted to make him a main oc! and kenny has branched off into his own story, so has alde!🐲 5. Do you prefer to make human, animal, monster, or _____ characters? Why?i like humanoid ocs better bc its a more familiar thing to me? its easier  for me to write human-like ocs than animals, but monsters are also REALLY FUN. demons are fair game, usually my ocs are humans with powers, or humanoids as i say.elves also  play a big role in my stories but i guess that also counts as humanoid! 6. When creating a character, do you come up with the visual concept or the written concept first?it really depends on the kind of oc itself but usually i write up the backstory before i even try designing. that way its easier for me to add elements of their past in their appearance, for consistency i.e. scars, birthmarks, style, etc.📌 7. Do you have characters that you know you’ll never use, but can’t bear to get rid of/recycle?elijah :( i dont think i can fit him anywhere in the big story arc and that makes me sad bc i really love his concept! (he’s a half-swedish half-american water witch with gay moms) (and his last name is jerkeryoff… he was a joke oc i fell in love with)💖 8. Is there a character that embodies your good traits, or traits you wish you had?fran or nar have traits i wish i had. theyre both sweet, helpful, unselfish, and though fran’s slightly more a pushover than nar, they’ve both gone through hell and come back shining and stronger. i wish i could do that. i hope i can.💔9. Is there a character that embodies your bad traits? Several characters? Which ones and what traits?i put a bit of myself in all my ocs, and it shows sometimes. vin has a lot of my bad traits (mentally ill [badly], prone to addiction, self-doubt, actually self-loathing really) and nate does too (selfishness, aggressive, mouth runs before brain does)rip♨️ 10. Is there a character that explores your interests or fetishes (orrrr is that just all of you characters)?interests? yes. vin does music, which im VERY interested in, and fran is really interested in space and astrology, like me! fetishes? ………….maybe…. talk to me to find out :^)✒️ 11. If you have characters that embody certain traits of yours—good or bad—has writing them changed how you view those traits? Has it affected you in any way?yeah. it’s been both, tbh. vin’s family drama  and stuff and how it affected him kinda helped me, or is helping me, get through shit. it’s changed my view on divorce. not really elaborating but yeah. fran’s anxiety also worked this way, and his shyness too. the more i wrote of these things, the more i realized how much i empathized. then i realized i self project lmaO💭 12.  Do you fantasize about being any of your characters, or are you more detached?if i was detached from my kids would i make a separate blog for them and have tags……… i love them and i think abt them all the time,,, fantasizing is the #1 reason i have any backstories whatsoever!🎵 13. Do you create playlists for your characters?ive been WANTING to for a WHILE but theres so many ocs and not enough time. one day i will .. i can’t use spotify because its banned where i live so maybe youtube or 8tracks? idk but when i end up making these lists i will share them!!!🎇 14. When writing for specific characters, is there anything you have to do to get into the right mindset?oh yeah def!! i need to be able to relate to the character, and see myself in their shoes, otherwise it’s hard for me to write them properly !!🌻 15. Which character is your guilty pleasure?cam…. for sure audsdafhnai he’s what i aspire to be honestly🌩 16. Is there a character of yours who’s a real struggle to write/draw? Why do you think that is?nobody really, i have a good time writing/drawing all my ocs! 🔑 17. Which character is the easiest to draw/write?the ones ive had for a longer time, i find, are easier for me to write.. so fran/vin, honestly. ive had growth with them, it’s kinda like we went through development together, and we did!!💎 18. Is there anything you really wish you could do, character-design-wise, that you feel is outside your current skillset? A concept that you wish you could pull off but are uncertain about?yeah… i wish i could pull off demons and stuff related to them. i want to make my lore super deep but then it’s not easy bc i barely have time to give, and demons in my universe would be super immersed in the lore. or um.. yknow, ships within my own ocs, instead of other peoples.🏆 19. What’s more important to you: visual design, unique personality, a trendy character aesthetic, etc? If you’re not sure, then what’s the first thing you usually nail down in a character?the first thing i nail down in a character is how theyre related to the big story. this means how they can be linked to other ocs, relationships, familial or friendly, or even past romances. then i figure out their personality from these things, and then i make the design! to me an in-depth personality is more important than anything, it’s a key to character  development. people think cool designs are all that matters, but to grab attention, a complex character makes sense. of course, i feel this because i’m planning to write a book, not make comics. visual appeal does exist ! and i believe in it. but i link personality to looks, and making the personality complex is more realistic and it’s easier to avoid mary sues then.🎬 20. Do you ever plan to do anything (comic, animation, etc) with your characters? Or are you just happy to have them?originally i never wanted to write a book with my kids! i was content just roleplaying. but one of my friends said that they have potential in a story arc, and that the way these people are connected is interesting (this is 2016, with my first three, and oldest ocs, fran, vin, and nate) i was really happy to hear that and got interested in writing a book, hopefully a series, with my ocs! and i plan to make this happen!!!thank u for asking, droki!!

Nintendo Switch review: a brave and fascinating new console
At 280 the Switch is a gamble, but Nintendo has again done its idiosyncratic best to challenge the way we think about games hardware
Nintendo remains a puzzling phenomenon for a lot of modern gamers. The company never makes powerful consoles, or cool consoles; it never pushes the processing envelope, and it always seems a little eccentric when it comes to online infrastructure. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, it isnt trying to make gaming PCs designed to resemble dedicated games machines it just makes games machines.
The Switch is the latest evolution of an idea Nintendo has been playing with since the arrival of the Wii in 2006 a console for everyone, with an interesting, accessible and flexible interface. The console itself is basically a tablet, and completely portable, but plug it into the stand and the action immediately appears on your TV. It is a weird hybrid, a new mid-point between home and handheld.
The big question is is it fun?
The basics
Priced at 280, the Nintendo Switch is a hybrid system a cross between a home console and a handheld. When you buy one, you get the console itself, as well as the two JoyCon controllers, the stand for plugging the device into your TV, and a controller grip. HDMI and power cables come too.
Nintendo Switch whats in the box. Photograph: Nintendo
Games are on small cartridges (that rattle rather suspiciously) and they slot into a port at the top of the console. Unlike with PS4 and Xbox One, you dont need to install the software on to your hard drive, which is just as well as the Switch drive is a measly 32GB. Theres a Micro SD slot at the rear of the Switch, which adds additional storage capacity.
Optional accessories include a wired LAN adaptor and pro controller which offers a more refined and traditional interface for 65. Extra Joy-Con controllers (necessary for multiplayer games like Arms) cost 75.
Specifications
Size: 10cm x 24cm x 1.4cm (with Joy-Con attached)
Screen: 6.2-inch LCD Screen, 1280 x 720 resolution
Processor: Nvidia Custom Tegra processor

A design of two halves
The Nintendo Switch looks like a very small, budget-conscious tablet, with the same sort of build quality (ie solid and kind of sleek). The capacitive touchscreen is not as precise as youll find on your new smartphone, but its a definite step up from the spongy Wii U GamePad and reacts to the slightest touch rather than a frustrated jab. The experience really does merge the accessibility of playing on a tablet with the added controller accuracy of a handheld. Its like a modern take on the multifaceted approach of the DS and 3DS, but with a larger screen and much more granular control.
When you want to plug it into into your TV, you slide the Switch into the dock, until it clicks into the port. This is a smooth, seamless procedure, but the console does rattle a little in its toaster-like home. The dock has HDMI, three USB ports and a power socket but thats all. Its just a hunk of plastic.

The Switchs built-in 6.2-inch display is 720p HD, and the picture quality is usually very good, with rich colours and a nice sharpness. When you plug the console in to your TV, Switch can output in full 1080p (though not 4K). On a larger display, its very clear this console is far behind Xbox One and PS4 in terms of visual fidelity the graphics have that familiar Nintendo look; cartoony, slightly hazy, but also artful. Titles like Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart and, later, Super Mario Odyssey do look beautiful, but in a more stylised way than the photorealistic aspirations of the other consoles.
Shared pleasures
Once charged, the Switch can be taken wherever you go and this is a key feature. With this console, you can put the screen down wherever you are, slide the Joy-Con off, hand them out and start multiplayer sessions with friends. The fact that the controllers can be used independently means Mario Kart, Bomberman, Just Dance and SnipperClips can all be played without the need to buy extra pads. Its the whole games-for-everyone philosophy of the Wii, joyously emancipated from the home.
On top of this, the console offers ad-hoc local networking for up to eight Switches. The idea of being able to meet up with pals wherever you are and play Mario Kart or Splatoon 2 together in big team sessions is an enticing one and the concept becomes even more interesting if/when we start seeing community-focused titles like Monster Hunter and Pokemon coming along. It was the former that more or less kept the Sony PSP alive, exploiting the machines ad-hoc connectivity; and we saw how powerful Pokemon Go was as a roving social experience. If Nintendo can harness this potential, it would be a major plus for the console. Sitting in a park with a whole bunch of people playing Mario Kart is a really fun proposition.
Joy or con?
Perhaps the most intriguing element of the Switch is its two Joy-Con controllers, which can be used separately, or snapped either side of a plastic grip to make a standard pad. Each Joy-Con has an analogue stick, a button array on the front, and four shoulder buttons along the edges. They also have built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes for motion control, while the right Joy-Con has a motion-sensitive IR camera, which can sense movement in front of it. Theres also a Capture button which lets you take, store and share in-game screenshots (but not video just yet).

The Joy-Con are small, but theyre very comfortable in the hand and the plastic is good quality. To make them more sturdy, there are wrist strap sections that slide on to the side of each controller, clipping into place. Theyre easy to get on, but removing them is an unnecessarily fiddly process of lifting a small locking mechanism, pressing a tiny black button then sliding them off it takes some practice (and brute force) and if anyone accidentally puts one on the wrong way round which really shouldnt be possible they become wedged pretty fast. It doesnt really feel like the neat, graceful, child-friendly industrial design were used to from Nintendo.
But theyre definitely good fun to use. Gripped in your hands they become almost invisible facilitators of ridiculous interactions. Whether thats milking a cow or pretending to scoff sandwiches in 1-2 Switch, or cutting out shapes in Snipperclips they take on the forms that each game requires; like the computer mouse, they simply become extensions of your own movements. This could (and in Nintendos hands should) lead to whole new interactive experiences
The Zelda box?
The Switch is launching with eleven games, but many of these are updates of already released titles like I Am Setsuna, World of Goo, Skylanders Imaginators and Just Dance 2017. One exception is Super Bomberman R, a re-invention of the classic multiplayer maze battler.
Of the two major Nintendo titles, 1-2 Switch really should be bundled with the hardware. This collection of competitive mini-games is fun for a while, but its purpose is to exhibit the capabilities of the console and with no lasting challenge to any of the 28 tasks, youll soon tire of it. Even a limited demo of the game would have been a welcome addition to the console package.
The key draw right now is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and honestly, what a draw it is. Expansive, refined and exciting, it could well be one of the greatest launch titles ever released.
Later in the year, well get Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Arms and Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which all look wonderful; then there will be Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and a Fire Emblem title, pretty much capturing the RPG market. Nintendo claims there are 100 games in development from 70 publishers highlights include the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim conversion, a Dragon Quest, a Sonic game, Ultra Street Fighter II, and follow-ups to cult titles like No More Heroes and Shin Megami Tensei. Thats a lot of fun to be had.

Nintendo has announced 60 indie titles as well: successful releases like Stardew Valley, Shovel Knight, Cave Story and Overcooked are on the slate, as are newcomers Yooka-Laylee, Snake Pass and Wargroove.
The big test of course is whether the big hitting franchises will come over. We know EA is making a Switch version of Fifa, and theres a Switch Minecraft, but will there be a Switch Call of Duty (and if the series goes back to WWII this will really matter), a Switch Red Dead Redemption?
So far it feels like theres more industry positivity around Switch than there ever was around Wii U. If Zelda starts shifting machines, the big publishers will want a part of that especially with the costs of producing high-end Xbox and PlayStation titles exploding with every new hardware iteration.
The end of the Miiverse
One disappointing aspect is that two favourite connected services Street Pass from the 3DS and Wiiverse from the Wii U will not be returning on Switch. Instead were getting a more conventional online subscription service offering multiplayer gaming and other content including monthly free titles.
At the same time, online lobbies and a voice chat app will replace the community hub that made your Wii U desktop feel like a thriving virtual town rather than a staid menu system. Indeed, the Switch desktop is rather sparse, so far consisting of large icons for any games youve played, as well as smaller options for the eShop, photo album and controller settings. Youll be able to import your Nintendo Account ID, make your own Mii character and set up friends lists, of course but currently the UI is very bare and uninspiring (although you could also see its simplicity as a bonus, especially as it also has to function on a smaller, portable display).
In many ways, Switch is going to be a lot more like Xbox and PS4 in its connected philosophy and thats a shame. And whats missing from this more conventional set-up is apps: currently there are no video-on-demand options like YouTube or Netflix, though Nintendo has said its considering them. Furthermore, we still dont know how much the subscription will cost, but it will be free until the autumn. On a more positive note, the eShop looks to be getting some excellent support from indie developers who are looking to support and explore the unique feature-set of the console.
Verdict
The Nintendo Switch is a brave and fascinating prospect. While the Wii U hinted at a dual screen future (and provided some truly brilliant games), this update truly gives us a strong standalone handheld platform as well as a home console that produces beautiful visuals and trademark Nintendo experiences. Those who well say buy a PC/Xbox/PS4 instead are too entrenched in conventional wisdom to understand the appeal of Nintendo hardware, which has always stood slightly to the side of the industry product pipeline. The Switch is playing in a very different space, a space of its own, and we now need to see if the rest of the industry, and a large enough audience of casual gamers, will join it.
Whatever happens, Nintendo has once again done its idiosyncratic best to challenge the way we think about games hardware. Right now, it has the best launch game in at least a decade, and enough compelling possibilities on the horizon to warrant enthusiasm and hope. At 280 it is a gamble; when the price drops, as it inevitably will before Christmas, it may prove irresistible.
Pros: fascinating hybrid concept; interesting controls; good quality screen; some excellent games on the way
Cons: areas of fiddly and below-par hardware design; limited launch line-up; unclear digital strategy
