Links to Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham's own posts on drift compatibility and drifting
Drift compatibility is psychological, not genetic
The better you know someone, the more likely you are to be drift compatible
Drift compatibility is potential, not fate
Drift compatibility can be a choice
Friendship is the foundation of drift compatibility
The drift requires trust
Trust is fundamental; also drift compatibility can be determined with anything that tests how well you can anticipate each others' moves
That even includes multiplayer video games
Many cadets wash out during Pons training when secrets come out in the drift and shatter their relationships
A lot of pilots get messed up by flinching over sexual thoughts
Trying to avoid thoughts just makes them worse
Not everything you see in the drift is always real; also the way to deal with thoughts is just let them flow by
Pilots communicate through "headspace"
Illustration of a conversation in headspace
First drifts can be very confusing, because partners don't understand each others' minds very well yet
The drift exposes pilots to each others' raw, unfiltered thoughts
Raleigh knew what Yancy was going to say
The drift doesn't let you read your partner's mind like a database, and you may not necessarily understand what you see. Also when Pentecost says he carries nothing into the drift he means he's calm and stable.
Pentecost gained this calmness through meditation
Trying to block your partner from your mind will make you lose control of the Jaeger
Pilots who fall below 90% sync will be in trouble
General information plus info on RABITs
You can chase your partner's RABIT
Another post confirming you can chase your partner's RABIT
More RABIT info
More general information
Travis Beacham defines ghost drifting
Partners' personalities can rub off on each other
Neural overload doesn't hit you all at once; it accumulates
The time a pilot can go solo varies, and it's a steep curve from fine to dead
More info on solo piloting
Being high in the drift probably makes it harder to avoid chasing the RABIT

T, 2k, Wangxian
Summary: He stares at HuaiSang, incredulous “If Second Jade wanted to drift with me, he would have done it when I asked him five years ago.” “People change, Wei Ying.” Lan fucking WangJi’s voice sounds from behind him. Pacific Rim AU. Kay's comments: Loved this Pacific Rim AU! In which Jiang Cheng is no longer allowed to pilot a Jaeger and so, Wei Ying has to look for a new partner. Enter: Lan Zhan, who he knows he's drift-compatible with, but who didn't want to drift with him the last time they had seen each other. Very cute and I like the glimpses into Wangxian's past. Excerpt: From the front of the room, Marshal Nie looks ready to skewer him alive, so Wei Ying plasters on his best smile and turns around instead of bolting right the fuck out of there. “Lan Zhan!” He notes that the other somehow learned to emote even less with his face since they last met two years ago. “It’s been a while!” “Indeed.” Lan Zhan says, bows slightly to him like he did back then, and walks away as if he didn't just use five words to leave Wei Ying with enough shit to process for a year. “You better put together another fucking list.” He hisses to HuaiSang before grabbing a bo staff.

Joke aside I think people doesn't give proper credit to jaeger pilots and how strong their sense of self is to not go all ghost in the shell in there the minute their entire memories and personalities get flowed with a second set of you know, memories and personalities.
It's a thing I also attribute to the fact that the drift doesn't outright show every detail of a pilot's life to another, but rather allows some glimpses to pass between them as the neural connection takes hold. I think the memories the drift shows depend also on the pilots and the possible shared experiences that could help them find common ground. A good and easy explanation, considering you don't want your pilots to go to battle in the middle of an identity crisis, right?
It also means things like, if Chuck survived Operation Pitfall, he wouldn't ghost-drift with Pentecost because Pentecost didn't take his memories or ego to the drift. Which means that some pilots can drift out of their skill to accept others completely and remove their own existences out of the equation, living so actively in the present it was enough to hold the connection. A strong sense of trust and acceptance and complete selflessness.
You, your co-pilot and the jaeger in there but you need to know which is which at all times. Based on how emotionally smart one has to be to differentiate those three elements in the middle of a battle, I can say that all the best j-pilots are insanely good at managing their own minds.

I rewatched Mako Mori and Raleigh Becket's first fight scene (the determining compatibility one...) for Fic Writing Research and now I need to know: does anyone have fic recs for drift compatible!Kirk and Spock?
I'll seek them out myself, but if anyone has any locked and loaded I would LOVE to know what your favorites are
And if they don't exist I guess I know what I'm doing after Fake Married lol

what IS the drifting about bc i am genuinely so interested
The Drift is from the movie Pacific Rim.
Basic backstory + direct quotes:
Humanity is attacked by giant monsters, "Kaiju".
"When alien life entered our world it was from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. A fissure between two tectonic plates. A portal between dimensions. The Breach."
The first Kaiju attack was utterly devastating.
"By the time tanks, jets and missiles took it down six days and 35 miles later three cities were destroyed. Tens of thousands of lives were lost."
Six months later another appeared. After 2 more of these attacks, it was clear this wasn't stopping any time soon. Humanity needed a new weapon.
A big problem when fighting them was "Kaiju Blue". Their blood is incredibly acidic and toxic, meaning that no matter where you fight them it'll still severely damage the environment. The best solution was to focus on inflicting blunt force trauma, making them hemorrhage internally without breaking the skin.
"The world came together pooling its resources and throwing aside old rivalries for the sake of the greater good. To fight monsters, we created monsters of our own. The Jeager program was born."
So basically, we needed to punch them really hard.
Giant mechs capable of going toe-to-toe with Kaiju. To control them effectively however, sticks and buttons wouldn't cut it. A neural interface to let you move it like your own body was required. However:
"There were setbacks at first. The neural load to interface with the Jeager proved too much for a single pilot. A two pilot system was implemented. Left hemisphere, right hemisphere pilot control."
Now it wasn't as easy as just plugging in two people. In order to share the neural load, the brains needed to be connected and work together as a unit, as well as with the Jeager. They needed:
"The Drift. Jaeger tech. Based on DARPA jet fighter neural systems. Two pilots, mind-melding through memories with the body of a giant machine. The deeper the bond... the better you fight."
The ability for any two(or more) people to successfully meld and fight together is called their "Drift Compatibility". This has very little to do with the individual capabilities of any single person, but how well both of them work with each other.
Because of this it's common for pilot teams to actually be related; siblings, parent and child, etc. But we also see a married couple, along with some pilots that just happen to think the same way.
Considering how late this response is, I'll put this part out now and see if there's any questions.

My submission for @codywanaufest - my Pacific Rim Codywan AU! This fic fought me every step of the way as all new ideas do, but I don’t know how I feel now about letting it go which I think is quite apt in this case.
You can read the fic on A03 here:
How to Stay Conscious When You Drown
~~~
The thrum of hyperspace won’t last forever. Coruscant this time, and so soon, each Breach event hopping so tightly on its predecessor’s heels the thinking is now that they are no longer discrete events at all. That this is, as they say, it. Cody beckons with fingers opening and closing for the whiskey bottle. He barely had time to stop shaking, panting with hands on the floor of the Drift chamber before Obi-Wan’s fingers hooked under his armpit and dragged him up. Clean yourself up, Commander. You know where to find me.
Sneak Peak: Once More (unto the breach)
Ava grasps the wooden staff in her hand, twirling it around experimentally. Then promptly loses her grip and plays a game of hot potato with herself trying to catch it before it hits the floor.
"So," she starts after finally getting a hold of it again. "How are we supposed to do this?"
Lilith gives her a dead-eyed stare.
"It's a stick."
"I know that," she grouses, "but how exactly does whacking each other with sticks tell us who our soulmate is?"
Who would co-pilot a jaeger with Karl Heisenberg?
So, the most obvious answer might be "Ethan Winters," but let's be real - despite Karl's undeniable handsomeness, Ethan really doesn't like him. Such is what comes of stabbing a man and dragging him into a meeting full of people who are unanimously on board with him being dead. Even if you're technically flirting with him by calling him "fresh American ground beef," he's gonna be a little sore at you.
Now this is Karl Heisenberg we're talking about, so it's entirely possible that he could figure out how to share the neural load with a dead brain. One night he's meandering through the jaeger hangar and sees the mortal remains of his buddy Bob, who succumbed to the ravages of a heart attack, and goes "Hmmm." Well, at least your brain is going to a good cause, Bob. Hopefully.
Of course, sticking Bob's brain into a standard system isn't gonna work, because Bob's dead and he doesn't have any will or consciousness of his own, so Heisenberg splits Bob's brain down the middle, and creates a system where the left side of Bob's brain absorbs the overflow from the left side of Heisenberg's brain, while the right side absorbs the overflow from the right side of his brain.
Now of course, this is a highly impractical plan to put into motion, because it's not like the PPDC or even the local shatterdome is going to sign off on such an unethical plan (even if it is fun and personally satisfying). And sure, there's a lot of totaled jaegers down in Oblivion Bay, but it's not like you can just haul one out without somebody noticing. So it's probably not going to happen, even if it would be extremely cool.
So, the thing about drift compatibility is that it's based on mushy things like "trust" and "mutual understanding." We know that Heisenberg is willing to try and offer trust to complete strangers at least sometimes (including ones he's stabbed), so it's reasonable to think he'd be willing to try out anyone who'd be willing to give him a shot.
People like Stacker Pentecost, Hercules Hansen, and Mako would probably take one look at him and decide that he's way too unhinged for them. Raleigh Becket would probably find his hammy swagger irritating, and Chuck Hansen would probably decide he was a menace.
However, there is a man at the shatterdome who understands the Importance of Being Hammy. He's friendly with pretty much everybody, and he also understands machines and mechanics pretty well.
That man is Tendo Choi.
Now, I know that he doesn't immediately look like the kind of guy who could throw a punch. But his actor Clifton Collins Jr. likes to think of him as a reformed criminal, so who's to say Tendo doesn't know some sweet moves?
So yeah, as far as characters who could be drift compatible with Karl Heisenberg go, I think Tendo Choi is a strong contender here.
@apaise
ever since she started getting work in the industry, soojin has gotten used to backhanded compliments and well-intentioned advice that is ultimately misguided. people take one look at her and immediately deem her unfamiliar with western culture. they have no idea soojin grew up on movies and tv, spending hours consuming locally produced media.
even after landing a project as big as clash of crowns ( as assistant director, but a directing job nonetheless ), she’s met with the same interjections     judging looks and sweet words, favoring assumptions over actually asking her about her background.
it’s why soojin is so quick to recognize those interactions even when involving someone else. she’s lounging by the refreshment table as she waits for toni, right when a group of actors approach. soojin’s spoken with them on occasion, but nothing beyond a few sentences. it’s a shame, for she’s a fan of so many of their projects... gushing about their work just doesn’t seem very professional.
soojin overhears a few of them talking to kim nayeon. while she hadn’t done much international work before, she was quite the household name back in korea. the many romcom leads she’s played over the years are a staple at the park household; soojin’s mother in particular loved all her dramas.
the other actors don’t seem to be aware of this, however. they speak to nayeon as if she’s a newcomer, dismissing the dozens of credits under her belt. it’s frustrating, but not surprising. soojin wouldn’t expect them to do something as quick as a google search to fact check before spewing condescending words masked as tips.
nayeon’s graceful enough to accept their advice, never once mentioning how she’s possibly worked in more titles than any of them. that’s expected as well. soojin understands not wanting to make waves... but it pains her to see someone who usually seems so bright reduced to a dim light.
normally, soojin would just leave this be. ultimately, this is none of her business     but their shared roots and experiences make her step out of her comfort zone for once. she waits to approach nayeon once the others have left; the actress looks incredibly disheartened now that she’s alone.
Tumblr media
“ i wouldn’t take anything they say to heart, ” soojin offers in lieu of a greeting, smile small and sheepish. “ i think they just like hearing themselves sound useful. ” hopefully that didn’t sound too bitter or harsh... it wasn’t often soojin managed to find someone who understood, after all; she’d hate for them to start off on the wrong foot.
“ sorry, i didn’t mean to eavesdrop. i was just     around. ” she’s a little awkward as she gestures for her original spot, before promptly stuffing her hand back in her pocket. “ for what it’s worth... i’m a big fan of your work. miracle at midnight is one of my favorite dramas. ”
