Okay honestly adding to the sweatshirt or like sharing clothes idea with Adrian, what do you think like, and I don't wanna sound weird, what do you think he smells like?
Okay THIS, THIS. I love this question because it's definitely important, I don't care what people say.
So I know he works at a restaurant, and in my experience, there's a certain smell that just kinda sticks with you when you work there for a long time, so he likes to remain clean and wash himself daily.
I wanna say he maybe uses Nivea or Dove moisturizing body wash, it's not too heavy of a scent but just enough to feel refreshed. The heavy men's smell (like pine or woodchip sorta stuff) isn't his thing, but his deodorant has to be strong enough yet still not harsh. Or maybe even Dr. Squatch, they got some good smelling stuff and he'd like to experiment.
He's not an Axe guy, I'm PRAYING he's not an Axe guy. I wanna sayyyyy he uses Dove Men's care or Dr. Squatch for the cool scents.
Yes I put too much thought into this, leave me alone...

every time i see a post about the statue that was pushed into the docks I have an ‘oh right that’s his name’ moment and then forget his name immediately. because the name of a slave trader and owner is not information i want stored in my head.
i do remember important names.
i remember Cherry Groce and Cynthia Jarrett and Leon Patterson and Joy Gardner and Oluwashijibomi Lapite and Brian Douglas and Alton Manning and Christopher Alder and Rocky Bennett and Roger Sylvester and Derek Bennett and Ricky Bishop and Michael Powell and Azelle Rodney and Jean Charles de Menezes and Mark Nunes and Habib Ullah and Sean Rigg and Seni Lewis and Jimmy Mubenga and Smiley Culture and Kingsley Burrell and Demetre Fraser and Mark Duggan and Jacob Michael and Anthony Grainger and Julian Cole and Leon Briggs and Faruk Ali and Aston McLean and Adrian Thompson and Adrian McDonald and Sheku Bayoh and Daniel Adewole and Jermaine Baker and Sarah Reed and Mzee Mohammed Daley and Edson da Costa and Shane Bryant and Darren Cumberbatch and Rashan Charles and Nuno Cardoso and Kevin Clarke and Trevor Smith and Belly Mujinga and Abigaïl Bennett. i remember the names of British POC, ESPECIALLY BLACK PEOPLE, who were killed by a corrupt and racist system.
i remember Mary Seacole and Nanny of the Maroons and Mary Eliza Mahoney and Toussaint Louverture and Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr and Kofoworola Abeni Pratt. i remember the names of people who were wronged, whose legacies are an important part of Black history and global history.
i remember Dr Shirley Jackson and Madam CJ Walker and Lyda D Newman and Marie Van Brittan Brown and Valerie Thomas and Christina Jenkins and Theora Stephens and Lisa Gelobteran and Sarah Boone. i remember the names of Black women whose inventions are an essential part of our lives today, whose names are swept under the rug and hidden by the names of their white male counterparts.
i remember Jupiter Hammon and Wentworth Cheswell and Phillis Wheatley and James Derham and Thomas L Jennings and Alexander Twilight and Macon Allen and Joseph Jenkins Roberts and Charles L Reason and Sarah Jane Woodson Early and Mary Jane Patterson and Dr Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler and John Willis Menard and Thomas Mundy Peterson and Richard Theodore Greener and Frederick Douglass and Judy W Reed and John R Lynch and Booker T Washington and Butler R Wilson and Lucy Diggs Slowe and Bessie Coleman and Josephine Baker and William Grant Still and James W Ford and William H Hastie and Crystal Bird Fauset and Hattie McDaniel and Bob Howard and Amanda Randolph and Florence LeSueur and Juanita Hall and Ralphe Bunche and Cora Brown and Dorothy Dandridge and Arthur Mitchell and Ruth Carol Taylor and Ruby Bridges and Donyale Luna and Robert Henry Lawrence Jr and Cheryl Browne and Vinnette Justine Carroll and Alan Bell and Teddy Seymour and Barack Obama and Rita Dove and Darnell Martin and Chelsi Smith and Franklin Raines and Venus Williams and Halle Berry and Sophia Danenberg and Karen Bass and Anette Gordon-Reed and Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald and Ruth E Carter and so many more. i remember the names of all the Black firsts who are forgotten, whose accomplishments are ignored.
don’t waste brain space on racists. learn from their mistakes, yes. but learn about the Black people they tried to silence for so long. because i can’t think of a better way to spite racists than by remembering the people they tried to make us forget.

Interview/Panel #2
“Hello Everyone!” The Speaker greeted warmly. The crowd warmed quickly, Sypha giving a big goofy grin as the full panel behind her waved lightly. “Joining us today is: The Tepes’ Family!” She said, gesturing to Dracula and his wifem their son sitting in between them. “Trevor Belmont !” The hunter waved, clutching a beer in his left hand. “The Demon Forgemasters; Hector and Isaac!” They simply nodded at their introduction. “ The Carmilla!”  “Boo.” Hector said suddenly, making Dracula crack a smile. Syphe simply continued herintroductions. “And Finally, Godbrand!” “Fucking yes!” The viking stood. “I made it on the panel!” “Sit your ass back down, You’re not special.” Trevor said quickly, taking a swing of his ale. “Now, we have a lot of ground to cover,” Sypha said quickly, “So let’s get this show on the road!” As Sypha spoke her grandfather appeared, wheeling in the basket full of questions on a cart. Sypha reached in, rummaging around before finally grabbing one. “The first question is for... Hector!” “What?” The forgemaster seemed caught off guard, blinking a few times to make sure he was really awake right now. “Oh, um, that’s great.” “Hector, @smolus-adorabilis would like to know... What is your favorite food?” “Oh..Well, goodness I never... Well, I’ve always really prefered vegtables and pasta, oh it’s so hard to pick a favorite. I every rarely eat meat.” Hector mumbled out his answer, Isaac sitting beside him and chuckling darkly. The young forgemaster struggled to even think of an answer, pissing off the hunter a few seats down. Trevor finally groaned, slamming his hand on the table. “Come on! It’s the first fucking question!” “Calm Yourself, Belmont,” Sypha warned. “Let him answer.” “The boy was always quite partial to beets.” Dracula answered. “Couldn’t get enough of them.” “I remember that phase.” Isaac added. Sypha simply took that as an answer, reaching in for another card. “Alright, Next question... Alucard.” The vampire smirked, shooting a look at Trevor who just rolled his eyes. “Do you sleep in the nude, or with clothes on?” “What-” Alucard was cut off by Trevor, laughing like a madman and wiping a tear from his eye.  “Well, go ahead, tell your adoring  fans how you sleep.” “Fine,” The vampire gave off a frustrated sigh. “H-Honestly The less I have on the better but I’ve never slept naked before.” “Try it, It’s very liberating-” “Belmont, no one asked you-” “Next question!” The speaker said with gusto. “It is for... Trevor! What is your favorite Booze?” “There’s this little bar outside of Craiova that I’ve taken a shine to, they make this mead with juniper berries in it-” “That’s an answer, Lets move on!” Sypha cut him off, Trevor lightly complaining as the others giggled at him. “Sorry Treffy, we have a long list.” She reached back in the basket, pulling out a card. “Another Hector question from Smolus-Adorabilus-” “Looks like you have a fan.” Isaac teased. “What is your favorite animal!” “Oh easy,” Hector said with a smile. “Dogs. I love dogs. They’re so sweet and loyal and you never have to worry about whether or not they love you... You just know.” Suddenly the table shook, a little zombie pug jumping on the panel table. It licked it’s masters face happily. Sypha smiled and reached back in the basket. “Our next question is for... Alucard.” The vampires mother patted his shoulder to congradulate him. “ Boxers or briefs?” “Are all my questions going to be like this?” He asked, raising a brow. His father simply shook his head. “Son, Tepes men are incredibly attractive. You must learn to deal with admirers.” “Anyway, I don’t really like either.” “So you just leave your cock swinging around?” Trevor slurred, taking in more alcohol. “That’s not safe-” “You’re drunk.” “At least I’m not freeballin-” “OUR NEXT QUESTION!” Sypha said loudly, “It is addressed to... Hector!” “Did I not get a question!” Godbrand complained, only for the hunter to lob his empty tankard at him, which he barely dodged. “Shut the hell up. You should be lucky they even allowed you up here.” “Hector, Do you sleep naked?” “W-What!?” Hector panicked, amusing Godbrand a little. “You heard her, Do you go to sleep with your dick out. If you do, Don’t be ashamed,” Godbrand started. “I do it all the time.” “That doesn’t surprise me.” Isaac said flatly. “I-I mean..Not often. My room is so high up in the castle.. it gets cold up there.” “So you have done it once?” Isaac asked suddenly. “You said ‘not often’“ “NEXT QUESTION!” Hector begged, the speaker scoffing at him. “That’s my line...but fine. Our next question is for... Both Vlad AND Lisa!” The couple gasped, reaching for each others hands. Adrian looked interested. “What is your ideal partner for your son?” “..Oh no.” Alucard said quickly under his breath. His mother let out a little squeal, tightly gripping her husbands hands. “Oh, My little Adrian.. He needs a good woman, someone highly fertile, wouldn’t some grandchildren be nice?” “She must be strong willed as well my dear, we want our grandchildren raised proper.” “Yes of course... oh and She should be sweet. The sweetest woman for my boy-” “Oh Man,” Dracula said quickly. “We merely say woman because we want grandchildren but... Son if you find yourself attracted to a man-” “Sypha, Please, Next question.” Alucard pleaded. “They could talk all day.” “Alrighty then. Alucard for you: What is your favorite human food?” “Well, I really like Shellfish, Mostly clams-” “didn’t he get that question before?” Trevor asked, “I thought he answered that-” “It’s not your turn, Belmont.” “Bite me-” “Your blood could get me wasted, no thanks.” He declined, simply waving it off. Sypha dove back into the basket, pulling another thing out. “The next question is for Alucard, Trevor, Hector, Dracula and Isaac!” “Not me-?!” “Be quiet Godbrand.” Dracula warned. “What is the question?” “Upper globes or lower globes.” Silence overtook the room and the men simply looked at one another. Drac turned to his wife but she was at a loss. Isaac, however, simply answered. “Lower Globes.” Isaac’s answer made Hector immediately look at him. “..Wait what does that mean?” “I don’t know,” The calm forgemaster admitted, “But I feel drawn to the answer ‘lower globes’ for some reason.” “Upper globes.” Trevor answered. Drac nodded in agreement. “I’m going to say Upper as well,” The vampire turned to his wife, “I’m unclear on the meaning but... I hope this answer is correct.” “I’m going to say lower.” Alucard said, “Also, very unsure what the question means.” “..I guess I’ll say Lower too then?” Hector asked, making Sypha sigh. “Someone want to explain to them what they just answered- you know what nevermind- Next question!” She changed the subject, digging back in the basket. “Our next question is for Hector and Isaac... this anon wishes to know if you would marry them.” “This is ridiculous.” Carmilla complained under her breath but she was undercut by Hector’s excitement.  “Um.. well.. If you’re nice and you genuinely care about me. oh and you have to be alright with animals.” “I do not plan on marrying.” Isaac answered. “It is a waste of time.” “Lighten up a little.” Hector complained. “There aren’t good enough people in this world to consider spending my life with. Dracula was lucky and managed to find the only rose in the desert.” Lisa put her hand to her heart and Drac nodded to his wingman, taking his wifes hand lovingly. “Alright then, Fair enough.” Sypha shrugged. “The next one is for Dracula and Lisa, It’s 2 questions on one card! Dracula, Who made the first move for...ahem, Consumating your marriage?” Alucard immediately put his hands over his ears, not wanting to hear this, While Trevor leaned in intently. “Well, Lisa. My Lisa has quite the insatiable sex drive-” “Vlad!” She scolded playfully, hitting his arm, making them both laugh. Trevor just watched Alucard sit there, his supernatural hearing making it hard to ignore the answer. “And Lisa, What would make you become a vampire? Would Grandkids convince you?” “Oh.. That is tempting..but Alucard doesn’t seem interested in children-” “Not at the moment, no.” He admitted, taking his hands off his ears. The move wasn’t helping anyway.  “I suppose I would become a vampire in my old age, spending my days with the love of my life...but before then, there is so much good I can accomplish and I need human advantages to do so.” “that’s beautiful Dr. Tepes.” Sypha swooned. “ Next question is for Hector! Where did you meet your dog?” “Oh. Caesar?” Hector asked, picking the pup up and cradling him. “Well, I found him in a cemetary.. his owners had passed and the poor thing stayed by their graves until he met his own fate..it was so cute and he had so much more love to give.. so I-” “BORING.” Godbrand complained loudly, leaning close to Carmilla who seemed disgusted with him. “Come on, When do I get my question!” “Wait until it’s drawn, Asshole.” trevor complained. “God this is a long night.” “The next question is for... Carmilla!” Sypha said, clapping a little. “Are you going to apologize to Lisa for calling her a breeding animal?” “Excuse me?” Lisa started, standing to her feet and glaring down the entire length of the table to the vampiress’s direction. Trevor held back a laugh, ready to see a human woman go off on a vampire. “Honey, Please,” Drac said sweetly, “Calm down.” “No,” She said suddenly. “I don’t.” “Excuseme!?” Dracula started darkly. Alucard stood and blocked his parents. “Mom, Dad, Please-” “Stake her in the fucking heart!” “BELMONT YOU’RE NOT HELPING!” “And one more question .” Sypha stated. “We actually had so many question, that we are going to hold a seperate mini panel one week from now to address them all. The last question for this panel is for Trevor and Alucard.” “Fucking finally.” the hunter complained. “Lay it on me.” “If your significant other gave you lingerie, could you pull it off and would you wear it for them?” Alucard was stunned but Trevor just shrugged. “Oh yeah, I’d wear it for them,” the hunter said casually. “Now, I don’t know if I could pull it off but... I’d try-” “I don’t even know how to answer that.” “Son, I think you could pull off lingerie-” “ Mother Please, never say that to me again.” Alucard begged. “Well, If your father can do it-” Lisa was immediately hushed when Godbrand failed to hold back a laugh, drawing attention to his end of the table. Drac’s eyes bled a sinister red as he stood, making the room glow with an eerie darkness. As Dracula made his way to Godbrand, Sypha quickly got the crowds attention. “And That’s all the time we have folks! Make sure to tip your writers and thank all of you for 1500 followers!” “I DIDN’T MEAN TO LAUGH-” “Pay no attention to the blatant murder occuring behind me!” Sypha said cheerfully. “WHAT I DO WITH MY WIFE IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS-” “I’M SORRY-” “Another panel will be held to finish up the follower question, as we had so many that we could barely use them all in one post.” Sypha explained, trying to block the view of Dracula lifting Godbrand off the ground. “Please stay tuned for that and I hope you all had fun here today!”

RWBY Character Image Song List 2019
Heyo folks!  It’s the hiatus, so you know what that means--MUSIC TIME!
After a volume ends, I try go through an extensive list of characters in RWBY and pick out various musical themes from my collection for each character as a sort of “image song.”  These are primarily instrumental pieces, and my collection consists of largely anime and videogame soundtracks that I’ve picked up over the years.  The characters are those who were named and appeared in the show, with a couple of unnamed exceptions like Pilot Boi and the Shopkeep, or had a recurrent role in the overarching story like Summer.
Of course, these choices are subjective.  Some may not agree with my choices for certain characters.  However, my selections were based on what’s presented in canon, not any kind of headcanon.  I take into account the character’s history and personality, as well as their personal growth.  If they only appear in one episode, I try to take into account the context of their appearance as well as the small amount of personality presented.
So, without further ado--here’s the list!  Characters are ordered in the volume in which they were introduced.  Links to the songs are provided, and checked to be up-to-date.  They are primarily YouTube links with the occasional Soundcloud or KHInsider link where I was unable to find anything on YouTube or the song wasn’t complete.

B.C. says no special treatment for movie stars, hockey players or cruise ships
Tumblr media Tumblr media
VICTORIA — British Columbia is moving towards easing COVID-19 restrictions, but movie stars, hockey players and cruise line operators won't be getting special passes around the province's self isolation and port access rules, says provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.
Henry said Tuesday she misses watching hockey games, but if the National Hockey League chooses Vancouver as one of its sites to reopen the season, players and team officials arriving from outside Canada must self-isolate for 14 days.

"I'm not going to compromise safety for any organization, whether it's the NHL or anything else, as much as I love hockey," she said at a news conference.
Premier John Horgan has said Vancouver would be available to act as a host site for NHL games if the league were to restart, but there has been no official announcement about the league resuming.
"There's a lot of ifs around this," said Henry.
The health officer was equally firm around not bending rules for international actors coming to B.C. for film shoots.
"Right now, I do not see lifting the restrictions on self-isolation," Henry said. "As things improve, both in the United States and in Canada, then we can look at having different conversations around the need for self-isolation."
She said there have been reports about cruise lines preparing to resume operations in the summer months, but B.C. ports will be off limits.
"If a cruise ship had somehow planned to come here then we would not be allowing people to come off the cruise ship," Henry said. "This is not the time for that type of a risk to be taken in our province. Certainly not in our ports."
Despite strict adherence to B.C.'s self-isolation rules for travellers and others arriving in the province, Henry had some advice for those wanting to get out and start new relationships after being cooped up for weeks.
She said people need to take things slowly and search for quality not quantity.
"If you are going to start a relationship with somebody this isn't the time to do rapid serial dating, OK," she said. "Pick somebody and see if it works and then take your time."
Henry said people who are sick should not be trying to meet others.
"Keep your germs to yourself," she said.
Henry reported seven new COVID-19 cases in B.C., bringing the provincial total to 2,360 people diagnosed with the novel coronavirus.
There has been one more death, a senior who was a resident of a long-term care home, she said. B.C. has now recorded 131 deaths.
Henry said 1,832 people have recovered from COVID-19.
Health Minister Adrian Dix said the province is undertaking a voluntary survey called "Your Story, Your Future" to help health officials track where the virus has been in B.C. and how people endured the pandemic.
"We always need to learn and prepare to learn and prepare for the future and you can help us do this," said Dix.
The survey asks participants about illnesses since January, travels and if they worked in the health care, grocery, transit, or law enforcement areas. It also asks respondents if they are interested in getting a blood test to help find out about coronavirus immunity.
Earlier Tuesday, the government said vulnerable and homeless people could soon receive a smartphone to access support services and to stay connected with friends and family while practising physical distancing.
Social Development and Poverty Reduction Minister Shane Simpson said providing up to 3,500 smartphones for vulnerable people will give them easier access to services and helps them connect to others when public spaces are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lorraine Copas, executive director of the Social Planning and Research Council of B.C., said access to basic communication plays a central role in how people practise physical distancing that is required during the pandemic.
She said the phones can connect to Wi-Fi and include a pre-loaded $10 data card, giving people access to Internet.
About 1,000 smartphones have already been distributed, with 200 provided to people moved to hotels from homeless encampments in Victoria and at Oppenheimer Park in Vancouver.
"This is something that was really needed," said Copas in an interview. "People are shocked they can have access to this technology. It's really quite beautiful."

[FN] Retention
Hi, all! This is my first post here, though I’ve been writing for a couple years.
This short involves a vampire dentist helping the werewolf protagonist of my main story, Kaitlyn, gain her fangs.
Here’s what you need to know before you read:
Werewolves possess a single set of fangs and two sets of carnassial (shearing) teeth in human form. They gain these teeth within the two years after awakening at age sixteen. Each set is four teeth.
Vampires possess a single set of retractable fangs. Both creatures are born and living, not made from a curse.
Both werewolves and vampires have deciduous (primary) teeth that shed before the permanent teeth erupt, like humans.
In werewolves, the fangs are connected to an ichor gland. Ichor is a substance that forms psychic bonds when introduced into the bloodstream. It’s released like a snake’s venom and is a voluntary action.
Without further delay, here’s “Retention.” Enjoy!
Dentist Scott Reed was preparing for his day’s appointments.
As one of the few supernatural dental surgeons and hygienists in his field, he dealt with patients of all ages, from toddler vampires with budding fangs to teenage werewolves with impacted teeth.
He leafed through the charts in his hands.
A three-year-old vampire with tongue thrust, a thirteen-year-old vampire with retained deciduous fangs, and a seventeen-year-old werewolf with a congenitally absent carnassial. Nothing he hadn’t seen before in his twenty-five years as a vampire practitioner.
A new name caught his attention as he skimmed over the remaining charts. Kaitlyn Brandt. Wasn’t that Pack Massena’s new addition, the mage he had heard about?
He examined the chart more closely. Age eighteen, almost three months awakened, with no eruption of the deciduous werewolf fangs.
He remembered reading the report before, though the age must have been incorrectly transcribed.
“Eighteen? I must be reading that wrong,” he muttered, squinting at the page. No werewolf he came across had ever awakened so late.
“No, that’s correct, Dr. Reed. Age eighteen, delayed awakening from Rainer’s disease,” Jenna, his vampire assistant, commented. “She has a two forty-five evaluation.”
“But still, Rainer’s disease? We knew it as mana imbalance, but it’s still rare nowadays.”
“Irony has a sense of humor, doesn’t it? Dr. Adrian Rainer will be accompanying her.”
Doctor Reed took a breath. Adrian Rainer, the twenty-four-year-old werewolf savant, would be coming here? He had finished his late father’s work on mana disorders and the disease was named after the young prodigy, despite the common misconception of it being named after his father.
The pattern of dying mages was so infrequent that no one could ever seem to determine a cause before Wesley Rainer began his study. When he died, his son found the missing biological link and created a course of treatment for mages who produced too much mana.
“Time to get the day started, anyway. I’m seeing the patient, not her future mate.”
It was only eight o’clock, yet a sense of dread filled him.
There was a reason he and others avoided Pack Massena. They kept to themselves, and for good reason. Despite being northerners, they followed the old ways, which meant they saw no qualms about handling those they disliked.
He could only hope that today, they would be in an agreeable mood.
* * *
Two-thirty came too fast for Doctor Reed’s liking as he and his assistants waited on Kaitlyn Brandt, sitting at the reception desk.
An X-ray was the first order of business. Hopefully, her human cuspids were only retained, preventing the deciduous fangs from erupting.
Retained teeth were easily pulled, but if that wasn’t the cause...
No. He stopped there. Congenitally absent fangs happened in what, less than one percent of all cases?
Absent first or second carnassials were more common, easily restored with specialized implants. Absent fangs, however, were not so easily replaced due to their critical connection to a werewolf’s ichor gland. These werewolves would never be able to bond naturally.
Most werewolves never worried about this, as a lost fang would simply be substituted with a replacement fang that the body developed.
The doorbell chimed and in walked a blond, slender girl. A man with auburn hair followed behind her. Kaitlyn’s orange eyes—a mage’s eyes—scanned the waiting room.
Adrian, however, trained his violet eyes on Doctor Reed. “Ah, Dr. Scott Reed. How are you?” he asked, his voice open and friendly.
“Well enough. And you, Dr. Rainer?” the man replied.
“Can’t complain, although Kaitlyn has us all a little worried. Hopefully, her human cuspids are only retained.”
“That’s exactly what I thought. Let’s get you checked in and then we’ll start with an X-ray.”
* * *
Internally, Doctor Reed sighed in relief as he looked at the image on the monitor. It had been exactly as he thought.
“Well, Kaitlyn, I see the problem. Your human cuspids are retained, meaning they didn’t shed when they were supposed to. But your four deciduous fangs are here,” he said, pointing to them, “and these are your permanent fangs, still developing underneath them.”
He showed her the developing carnassials and none of her teeth were impacted, meaning they would erupt normally.
“It looks so weird. They’re all stacked on top of each other,” she said, sitting in the exam chair and looking at the image curiously.
He laughed lightly. “That’s how all teeth develop, not just supernatural teeth like these. Now, would you rather have me pull your cuspids today, or during your next appointment?”
Kaitlyn looked at Adrian. “What do you think?”
“Sooner is better than later, Dove. I also think both pairs should be extracted during one appointment, not two.”
“Generally, I would disagree,” Doctor Reed began, “as my average patients aren’t medically supervised around the clock. But, in this case, I find it acceptable.”
He turned to Kaitlyn. “You’d also heal faster with both pairs extracted at the same time, and all four fangs would erupt concurrently.”
“If it’s best, then let’s just do it now,” she replied.
“Wonderful. We’ll start immediately.”
As Doctor Reed watched Jenna prepare Kaitlyn, while Adrian explained to her what was happening, his fears dissipated.
Maybe, just maybe, Pack Massena wasn’t quite the fearsome circle he had believed. Nevertheless, it was always a good idea to make friends. The opportunities to be had could be great indeed.

The NFL was done with Jamaal Charles, but he wasn’t done with it
A knee injury left the Chiefs’ all-time leading rusher’s future in doubt. The Broncos gave him a second chance and hope.
DENVER –- NFL bye weeks can be a time to reflect. But not for Jamaal Charles. He has already done plenty of that, pondering for countless hours how he rolled from Kansas City to Denver, how he thought he would be a Chief for life and now is a Bronco for at least a season.
How he went from red carpet NFL running back rank to a backup, resurgent role.
Denver (3-1) is on its bye and Charles is healthy once again, sculpting a niche in his new home, full of hope once again, recovered from a busted knee and a broken heart.
"People thought my talent had just gone away," he said softly. "No, I’ve always been a special guy. No, it’s still there. I got credibility."
You hear it and it might sound smug but there was not an ounce of that when he said it. Just steel exhibited that any top-shelf NFL running back must seize when he is sent packing by his old team and must create new triumphs with his new one.
Adrian Peterson is feeling it New Orleans, struggling to locate his nook. LeGarrette Blount is capturing it in Philadelphia. Eddie Lacy looks for more in Seattle. Marshawn Lynch scorched in his Oakland start and now fights a fizzle. Latavius Murray finally gets his crack this weekend in Minnesota.
Each is in a new place for different reasons but like Charles yearn to prove their old teams made a mistake. That it’s not over.
"The memories in Kansas City are there," Charles said. "It’s normal to lose yourself in those. But reality is it’s the past. It’s behind me. I’ve got something in front of me. I’ve got goals."
Nine Charles seasons in Kansas City and now he is gone.
Charles turns 31 in December, played at Texas, was a Chiefs third-round pick in 2008 and has been one of the NFL’s most electric players.
He shifted, juked and blazed his way to the Chiefs all-time rushing yards leader. Four times he rushed for more than 1,000 yards with a career-high 1,509 in 2012. At 5’11, 199 pounds, there was always sway in his running and force, too. Even now, with nearly 7,500 career rushing yards, he is also the NFL’s all-time leader in average rushing yards gained (5.5) per carry.
He tore up his left knee in 2011 and overcame that surgery. He ripped his right one in 2015 and could not rise above it in Kansas City’s thinking. The Chiefs released him last February.
"(Chiefs head coach) Andy (Reid) called me in and told me that I would be a Chief for life as far as he was concerned and he was pretty emotional about it," Charles said. "We still talk. Nine years just gone in an instant. Injuries come in football. It’s something you can’t control. They had their goals. I was no longer a part of them."
He visited Seattle and a couple of other teams in March, he said, but eventually was told that the Chiefs just might be right about his knee. That the recovery, the costs and the risks made him expendable.
"So, I went back to Dr. (James) Andrews and told him, `Hey, they are not seeing what you are seeing’ and I feel like I have no hope," Charles said. "He said, `I worked on your knee. I know your knee. You just have to build the quad muscle stronger. You’ll be like Jamaal then.’ Dr. Andrews really gave me hope. He built my hope."
Charles did the rest.
For the next few weeks, he returned to Kansas City and found a special trainer and friend.
Alphonso Hodge played cornerback with the Chiefs (2004-2006) and Jets (2007-2008). He owns the DoWorkFactory2.0 training facility in Kansas City.
Hodge said his teammates always applauded him for his training. And once he suffered a knee injury that helped cut his NFL career short, he dove into the training profession as a new career.
"I was able to be Jamaal’s trainer and friend and was able to draw on the experience I had with knee surgery," Hodge said. "When I first got with Jamaal, I could see the toll on him. It was very hard for him. He had gone from a star to now people wondering if he could do it. At one point he was a Hall of Fame certainty and clearly the greatest running back in Chiefs history and now it was if that meant nothing.
"Jamaal has always been a workhorse, so guiding him was easy in that way. But he wanted to do the speed, everything fast right away. The hard part was keeping him in the process because of his fire. We worked on the core, his quad first. It was like we had to build and recreate that muscle. After about four months, he was night and day. He began to look like himself. He had hope once again. Jamaal wants 10,000 career rushing yards. Jamaal wants to be part of that elite club and more. He wants to play at least two to three more years. He wants to win a Super Bowl."
Charles had played nine seasons, Hodge said. He said Charles could have easily been satisfied and concluded it was enough. That his career had plenty of sparkle.
But Jamaal Charles was not interested in reflection.
His talent was not gone, he insisted.
He has always been a special guy, he asserted.
He’s got credibility, he vowed.
In May the Rams were interested. The Cleveland "Bears" (Charles had to be reminded it was the Browns), were, too.
But the Broncos connected most with Charles. He signed on May 2.
"In rehab, my approach was to kill it, and Alphonso really helped me to do that," Charles said. "I signed a one-year deal. C.J. (Anderson) is a great back and he’s the guy here. We’re figuring out how I fit in here."
He showed here on last Sunday in Denver’s 16-10 victory over the Raiders that he is healthy. He ran between the tackles – not bouncing outside to avoid contact – as if he knows his status and form are true. He looked quick. He looked fast. Denver rushed for 143 yards and Charles gained 33 on five carries.
Through four Broncos games in his 33 rushing attempts he leads the team with a 5.3 average yards gained per carry. He is part of a potentially potent running game that thus far has outrushed opponents an impressive 572 yards to 203 yards. Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy promises in this deep Denver backfield, Charles will continue to surface, will contribute, will get the ball in key spots in key games.
It may not be red carpet treatment for Jamaal Charles, but there is still magic in the ride.
Something splendid in it about hope and a singular chance to look forward, not backward.
"I thought I would play all of my career in Kansas City," Charles said. "But I feel good here. They opened their arms to me here and gave me a chance. They gave me hope."
