Me, rewatching Back To The Future and being happy about Doc and Marty having that father/son, mentor/mentee dynamic that I love:
:DD
Me, slowly realizing that a not so small amount of people FREAKING SHIPS THEM:
☹☹☹☹☹☹
Edit: I'd also like to add that in the German version of the third movie, Doc doesn't write "I look back on our friendship with fond memories" in his letter, he writes "I look back on our friendship with fatherly feelings" and this difference is important to me

extremely underrated post-canon BTTF concept:
Doc Brown, on meeting Marty for the first time: this kid is 14 which is basically the same as 16 and 16 is almost 18 which is essentially an adult. i will treat him accordingly.
Doc Brown, when his own kids start becoming teenager: i fucked up i fucked up i fucked up-

Back at it again with my Back to the Future crossover with Don't Starve. Though decided to change quite a few things. Mainly in that now Webber is taking on the role of Marty. (And some other stuff but I'll get into that another time.)
Webber in this AU was adopted by Wilson when he was a very young boy. He was rescued by William Carter and was shortly after brought to Wilson to be looked at. Wilson took a shine to the young lad and took him in. With help from the Carter family in raising Webber, he's become a fine young man. (Main contribution with the Carters was providing a roof over Webber's head since Wilson's house isn't what he would deem safe for a child to live in... On top of that Wilson's house isn't even a house. It's a garage.)
Webber is very adventurous and can have a bit of an attitude sometimes. Mainly in that he won't stand for any kind of bullying and has gotten into a few scuffles at school for standing up for classmates. He also has a hard time backing down, especially when accusations of being a coward get thrown at him. His temper aside, Webber has a good heart and tries his best to do the right thing. He's also gifted in music and can play the guitar very well. Should also be noted thanks to living with the Carters, he met his girlfriend, Wendy, William's niece, who he is very much in love with.
Wilson is the local scientist. Rather... eccentric at times but well meaning. Just curious about the world around him and wanting to understand it. Many around Hamlet Valley consider him nuts and generally not a good influence but mostly harmless. Wilson really wants to make something great one day... and well, soon enough, he does with his invention of the Flux Capacitor.
That will be it for now on details. Really happy with how both boys look. Was fun making an older looking Wilson. Debated on him having full on silver hair but decided to go with grayish with streaks in it. (He's about in his 60's since during 1955 he's in his 30's.) Then during the latter films, he's back to looking in his 30's after a trip to a rejuvenation clinic. (Unlike Doc Brown it actually did make him look different. Caught Webber completely off guard when he saw him.)
Webber was fun to make into a teenager. Especially with a human design to work with these days. (Sure can't see his face but knowing what his hair looks like is enough for me to work with.) He's got so many fun curls to play with hair wise and it's definitely him slightly emulating Wilson. And he really rocks the Mary Mc'Fly look.
And that'll be it. XD Expect random doodles here and there when the mood hits.

Taking Twinkling Watermelon as a remake of Back to the Future (1985) makes even more sense when you consider that BTTF originated, not with the idea of a time machine, but with the concept of a teenage boy who gets to meet his father as a teen. But in the process of bringing that about, a lot more things were added on, and in the end, Marty doesn't even spend a lot of time with his father. He spends more with his mom and much more with the Doc. However (like I said in an earlier post), the much longer runtime of Twinkling Watermelon actually gives the main character the chance to build an entire friendship and close bond with his dad in the past, as well as bond with his mom and play and perform with a band like he’s always wanted, and to lose his mind trying to figure out how to accomplish his matchmaking mission and go back to his time. So TW is not only a remake of the actual final product of BTTF, but also remains true to the original intention of the movie.

Day 9: Shopping
"McFly, you are hopeless." Jennifer told her boyfriend as he walked past endless shelves, not even giving anything a second glance.
"I'm telling you Jen, Doc wouldn't like any of this stuff!" he protested, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
Jennifer rolled her eyes. "You don't even know what he would want."
"I'll know it, once I see it."
They had been at it for hours. Now, Jennifer loved shopping as any teenage girl would. But this was getting tiresome. Marty asked her to help him find his new employer Doc Brown a Christmas gift as she was much more adept to shopping then him. Unfortunately, he was stubborn. Every suggestion she gave he passed down. And after forcing him into several shops in the Twin Pines Mall, he hardly expressed any interest in anything sold. Usually by this point she would have found something. Currently they were in Radio Shack, Jennifer thinking maybe Marty could find something that would assist some of the scientist's inventions.
"I think you just need to settle. You've only known him for a few months. And your only fifteen, it's not like you have an extensive budget. He'll understand."
Marty's face soured stubbornly. "It's still a Christmas gift. I don't want to disappoint him."
"Alright." Jen said. "I'm going to go over to the shop next door, save some time."
Marty nodded. "I'll meet you over there when I'm done here."
The store next door happened to be Camelot Music. She walked in, but didn't expect much luck. Maybe they sold some older music from the Doctor's era? She walked in, browsing lazily before someone caught her eyes. Shifting fretfully through the aisles was a wide eyed white haired man.
"Doctor Brown?" she asked in suprise, walking up to him. What on earth was he doing here of all places?
The scientist looked up in surprise, eyeing her. "Who are you?"
"I'm Jen-"
"Jennifer! Marty's new romantic confidante!" he exclaimed in relief.
"Er-"
"Look, I need your help. I have found myself at a complete loss for what to get Marty for Christmas! I finally found this place, knowing his affinity for music, but I'm afraid I am quite clueless where to go from here. It has been quite some time since I have gotten a human a gift, not a loyal canine."
Jennifer blinked at the whirlwind of words being spoken to her by the eccentric scientist. After a moment of processing she shook her head. It seemed both him and Marty were hopeless. "Alright." she sighed. "First of all your looking in the wrong genre..."

Here’s the thing. The original Doc who died in the first timeline may have never had any feelings for Marty. But the Doc who wore the bullet proof vest is a different man. Unlike the original Doc, who met Marty in 1982 when he was a teenager, this new paradox Doc had 30 years to pine over a whirlwind friendship with a clever, mysterious, vivacious time traveler who thought Doc walked on water. Marty is only in 1955 briefly, but his impact is obviously profound. Marty has so much respect, admiration and faith in Doc that it literally rubs off on him by the end of their time together. Doc begins to think more highly of himself and his capabilities.
Fast forward 30 years. Marty returns to a paradox of 1985. Some effects of his meddling are more obvious than others (ie his family), but the point is this is no longer the same Doc he left behind. At first glance he may appear similar. Their relationship may appear unchanged. But I’d be interested to discover how much of that is Doc’s own careful construction, having to hide the existence of time travel and his prior meeting with Marty in 1955. I imagine a Doc that has been hopelessly infatuated with the memory of Marty for three decades, but is unwilling to jeopardize their friendship and Marty’s understanding of reality to act upon it.
The question I keep coming back to is this: just how different is this paradoxical Doc who wore the bullet proof vest? How drastically did those thirty years of waiting alter him from the original Doc that Marty knew? And how will this change the trajectory of their relationship once they’re both on the same page?
This is all my meta musing of course, because I don’t think Marty would consciously “get” that this new Doc belongs to a paradox, and the original Doc really WAS shot to death in front of him by terrorists. Even if he could wrap his brain around it, he wouldn’t want to. Doc is Doc to him. No matter what time.

Me, just thinking about some of the various milestones (good and bad) the Time Family is going to experience together. Thinking about the progression of (mostly linear) time for all of them.
Marty not being able to see Doc as much because his career's taking off and then there are the kids and life gets hectic and he hates that.
Welcoming Curie into the family.
The weeks it takes to clean out and dismantle the garage to move all that stuff into the Browns' new house.
Jules following in his father's footsteps and getting into university at a young age. Verne more than intelligent enough to do the same, but he's not in the same rush that Jules is to prove himself; he's just taking life as it comes and though he likes science (how could he not) and enjoys helping out Doc with inventions, he doesn't want that to be the focus of his life.
Doc and Clara at the McFly/Parker wedding, over the moon.
The dreaded teenage years for Jules and Verne.
Doc and Clara being named godparents to the McFly twins.
The McFly twins' first day of school.
Jen's huge promotion as a journalist.
The loss of Lorraine & George.
Clara's fiftieth birthday.
Marty starting his own company.
One of Doc's inventions gaining traction.
Ellie having a little kid crush on Jules or Verne (which Marty will embarrass her with when she's older as any true dad would).
The great, gotta forge all the paperwork and fudge some dates on official government records to protect my family fiasco.
Clara learning how to drive.
Jules and Verne learning how to drive.
Joint family holidays.
The housewarming party as Jen and Marty move into their place in Hilldale.
The Browns watching the twins while Marty and Jen are off on work/holiday.
All of Doc's various inventions & improvements to the time vehicles.
Doc & Clara renewing their vows, even though they really don't need to.
Accidental temporal adventures, some of which could have universe-shattering repercussions.
Jules and Verne graduating university.
Doc eventually, finally needing glasses and being very annoyed about it.
Jules and/or Verne getting ready to marry their significant others.
Doc's funeral.
Clara telling Marty he can't take the time machine to go back and see him again no matter how broken up he is, because she is too.
Marty asking for life and fatherly advice from Doc because sometimes, having kids is so overwhelming and how do you do it am I doing it right do they hate me?

Back to the Future: The Animated Series, s02ep03 “A Friend In Deed” Review and Commentary
Previous episodes linked here.
In this episode: Lots of funny moments, another woman from the past falls in love with Marty, and I go on ramblings about Tiffany Tannen and my dislike of Cartoon Marty.
Season 2 of the animated series is really making use of green screens, huh? In episode one, Doc was stranded on an island, then he was in outer space in episode two, and now he's at the "Hill Valley Beach and Synchronized Swimming Center." He's wearing a funky outfit and using a metal detector to search for money in the sand.
Tumblr media
Is this the first time we're seeing Doc in shorts?? I can't recall, but it might be.
He tells us that he's found 85¢ so far and that it's only cost him $200 in equipment to do so. Oh, Doc. You are one of a kind.
He leads us into a story of another situation that involved buried valuables. And instead of the story beginning like it typically does with, "It all started when my sons..." or "It all started when Marty...", this story begins with Biff. And that lets us know right off the bat that it's all downhill from here, lol.
Cue the cartoon!
We begin at the Tannen residence (always a treat to hear Tom Wilson's voice), where Biff has decided that what his family needs is a swimming pool. Yes, his family. And who do we meet? His son!
Tumblr media
I've always been intrigued by what adult Biff's family situation was like. I know that an early draft of the film had George buying the peanut brittle from Biff's young daughter and that the BTTF card game and the Citizen Brown comics mention Biff's teenage daughter Tiffany Tannen. (She was also supposed to have a role in the video game, but her character was cut and "combined" with the alternate version of Jennifer.) This is the concept art for her.
Tumblr media
There's also speculation that Tiff might be included in the "Continuum Conundrum" series from the IDW comics. In the story, which takes place in the months following Marty's return home after part III, there's mention of Jennifer's friend group, which includes someone named "Tiffany." Some fans headcanon that this is a referring to Tiff Tannen. I don't really have an opinion on the theory one way or another, but it would be SUPER interesting if one of Jennifer Parker's best friends in the Lone Pine Timeline is Biff's daughter.
I would LOVE to see fanfics that include her or even focus on her. There's so much potential! You could have her resemble what she was supposed to be in the game—all rough around the edges and 100% a Tannen—or completely rework her to be a genuinely nice person. Maybe she actively rejects the Tannen reputation. Maybe she's a sweet person, but people are wary of her and judge her based on her appearance or her name. Maybe she is friends with Jen and thinks Marty is a neat guy. So much someone can do.
I digress.
In typical Biff fashion, he's going to make his young son dig the hole for a pool while he sits around in a lounge chair. Father of the year. Also, we haven't seen a whole lot of Biff so far in this series, so I haven't had anything to say about him, but it's clear he's not the meek version of Biff we have at the end of the first film. Cartoon Biff acts very much like he was never taken down a notch or had anything happen to humble him. So...I wonder what the story is there.
(Side note to also mention that we haven't seen—or even heard of—George and Lorraine. Marty's just always at Doc's house, with no information on parents or siblings. I wouldn't be surprised if a young kid watching this in 1992 without having seen the movies simply thought that Marty was part of Doc's family.)
While digging, Little Biff (referred to as Junior) unearths a piece of paper. We don't know what it is, but Biff gets a smile on his face as he reads it, so it can't be good. We cut immediately to the Parker family ranch!
Tumblr media
Jen's family owns a ranch! I love it!
Marty is there having lunch with Jen and her grandparents, but it is NOT going well. Because Cartoon Marty is nearly unrecognizable from his Movie Counterpart, he's being an immature, disrespectful doofus around Jen's relatives. He places a whoopee cushion on Jennifer's grandmother's seat, then puts a fake ice cube with a spider "frozen" in it into her drink. And he just sits there hysterically laughing even though nobody else thinks it's funny. Jennifer's grandfather in particular becomes angered by Marty's incessant pranking.
Tumblr media
Grandpa Parker, considering pummeling Marty.
And I know I've mentioned many times about how much I dislike the choices made with Marty's character, but. Seriously, what happened here? WHO made these choices and why didn't Bob Gale stop them? This might as well have been a completely different character, that's how unlike Marty he is. He's self-centered a lot of the time. He's dishonest (there was a whole episode where he just piles on lie after lie). He's cocky and inconsiderate and ridiculously immature. He is NOT my Marty McFly.
Tumblr media
See the boy on the left? Love the boy on the left. Fantastic little dude. Five out of five stars. See the boy on the right? Don't like him all that much. Many things wrong. Sad.
It bums me out that they took such a great, loveable guy and ripped all his great traits to shreds, leaving us with whatever it is Cartoon Marty's got going on. I don't even know. Guy's got issues.
Time to reel my focus back in. Just as Grandpa Parker seems poised to give Marty a serious talking to, Biff shows up wit the police. Marty asks Jennifer why her grandparents would invite Biff because, "He's a jerk with a bad sense of humor."
"Look who's talking," Jen's grandfather replies.
Go. Grandpa. Parker.
When Grandpa Parker orders Biff off his land, Biff informs him that it's HIS land. The piece of paper he found in his yard was a deed to the Parker property dated 1875 and signed by one of Jen's relatives, as well as Biff's great-great-granduncle.
Tumblr media
Biff tells the Parkers that he's going to turn the ranch into a toxic waste dump and miniature golf course, which is both horrible and very funny. Quite in-character for Biff Tannen. As he prepares to order the house to be demolished, Jennifer calls to Marty for help, but he's taken off on his hoverboard. Assuming that he's doing it to run away from the trouble, Jennifer proclaims, "There's nothing worse than a chicken." The actual, literal chicken standing beside her gets very insulted and walks away, lol.
We then go to the Brown home, where Verne is impatiently waiting to eat. Jules is making him pancakes on a ridiculous specialized griddle he invented because Jules is extra like that.
Tumblr media
Marty bursts into the kitchen, yelling that he needs to borrow the DeLorean to help Jen's family. Jules informs him that the car isn't there—Doc and Clara have taken it to go see Hamlet, performed by the original cast—but that he can use the train. Marty and the boys take off for 1875.
Once there, Marty immediately sets his sights on warning Jennifer's relatives about the ranch. However, he's interrupted before he can do so, on account of another woman spies Marty and immediately has a crush on him (naturally). I should have been keeping count of how many episodes include someone laying eyes on Marty and falling in love with him.
But wait. Wait. You NEED to know how the scene starts off. The woman walks straight up to Marty and goes, "Howdy, handsome!" followed immediately by this:
Verne: "Handsome? Get real."
Jules: "Get glasses!"
Had to stop it right there because I was laughing. Jules and Verne think Marty is ugly CONFIRMED.
Anyway, the woman ends up being Hepzibah Tannen, sister of Thaddeus Tannen (whose name was on the deed). And Hepzibah is head-over-heels for Marty. At one point, Marty ends up at her house, and Thaddeus is not thrilled to meet him. Before he can toss him out, Hepzibah picks Marty up, holds him close, and shouts at her brother, "Give me that! It's mine!"
Tumblr media
Ridiculous.
Since his sister is so in love, Thaddeus agrees to let Marty join his gang. Thaddeus teaches Marty how to box and how to steal things from people (Marty immediately returns the items when Thaddeus isn't looking. +1 point for Cartoon Marty). Marty also continues his practical jokes by giving Thaddeus gum that turns your mouth black. Thaddeus isn't happy. This is necessary info to understand part of the next scene.
Back on the Parker ranch, where Jules and Verne have become farmhands, they come across these posters.
Tumblr media
Several things to note here. 1. "DEAD OR UNALIVE" 2. Marty's gum gave Thaddeus a nickname. 3. Marty is only "sort of wanted" 4. Thaddeus evidently decked Marty for playing a prank on him.
Later on at the Tannen home, Thaddus suggests Marty and Hepzibah get married. This is followed by some very funny dialogue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm definitely finding the humor to be better in the second season. I've laughed out loud several times since I started it.
The next day, Thaddeus and one of his other gang members go off to get Marty and Hepzibah a wedding present. Marty manages to sneak away from his "engagement picnic" to intercept Thaddeus, who is in the process of stealing the ranch from Mr. Parker. He has Mrs. Parker tied to the railroad tracks, and the only way he'll let her loose is if the deed to the ranch is signed over. This is his wedding present to his sister and Marty.
Which. Doesn't really make sense? I mean, it makes sense here, but then what motivated him to steal it originally, before Marty time traveled? Maybe Hepzibah had fallen for a different guy? Or Thaddeus simply wanted the ranch just because? Idk.
When Thaddeus goes to sign the deed, Marty lends him a pen (which is another prank, hehe. The pen has ink that eventually fades away.) Thaddeus then refuses to untie Mrs. Parker, so Marty refuses to go back home with him. Thaddeus leaves, Marty, Jules, and Verne save Mrs. Parker, and all is well. Marty assures the Parkers that their ranch is safe, and he hops on the time-train with the boys.
Marty returns to the present-day ranch, stops the bulldozer, and shows everyone the deed, which now has no signatures. Biff gets a citation for disturbing the peace, and Marty is back in Jennifer's good graces. The end!
Back at the beach, Real Doc digs up an antique fountain pen, accidentally squirts himself in the eye with the ink, and then leads us into the experiment portion of the show, where we're taught how to make invisible ink. We then return to Doc, who finds something else with his metal detector: the keys to the DeLorean that he'd lost the week prior. Yep. Doc had been searching the sand all that time for his car keys. Goofy guy.
Fun episode. I always enjoy when they're Marty, Jules, and Verne-centered, and this was a funny one as well. It was neat having an episode with so much Tom Wilson! (he voiced Biff and Thaddeus)
Wow, this post was a long one. I did go on a few side-tangents, haha. To those who read this whole thing: thanks for sticking with me. I'm so glad there are people who enjoy reading these silly episode commentary posts!
Join me next time to see Marty accidentally join the army in 1944.

❝ Felix was well-known in Hill Valley only because of his parents. Born to Rebecca and Tom Sturgess, Felix had been abandoned on the steps of the local police station by his parents when he was only three weeks old and eventually adopted by the Wilkinsons. He could've been known for so many other things - being an amazing photographer, being incredibly socially awkward and incredibly sarcastic when he did talk to people, or even (not that he wanted anyone to know this at all) being one of the only gay kids at Hill Valley High School. But no. All anyone at Felix’s school (and in his hometown, for that matter) really knew about him was that he was the kid whose parents had abandoned him, who hadn’t even cared enough about him to see him through his first year of life.
Though Felix genuinely loved and appreciated his adoptive parents, who were kind and supportive and loved him like he was their own, he had always wondered about his birth parents, the people who had created him only to leave him alone in the world, however briefly. He had tried, more than once, to find out any information about them, but it hadn’t been easy, seeing as Rebecca and Tom had skipped town hours after abandoning their son and no one in town seemed inclined to even acknowledge that they existed, at least when it wasn’t in relation to Felix being “the boy who’d been abandoned”. All he had ever been able to discover about them was their names, a general consensus that they were not good people, and two yellowed yearbook pictures he’d managed to procure from the local library. Not exactly enough to satisfy his curiosity.
Eventually, Felix had resigned himself to never learning anything about where he came from, choosing instead to love the parents who actually wanted him. By the time he was seventeen, he was focusing on nothing but earning good enough grades to be able to get into the art school of his choice once he graduated and earning enough money from his part-time job at the local mall’s movie theatre to pay the tuition for at least his first year. Slowly, life faded into a monotonous blur of the same events day after day, with the only thing Felix found joy in was taking pictures and secretly sneaking looks at Marty McFly during the classes they had together.
Until Felix wanders out into the mall parking lot one night to smoke after his graveyard shift, and sees Doc Brown, the crazy old inventor who nobody in town but his crush really tolerates, being shot to death by a group of men in a large van while standing near an odd-looking DeLorean. While rushing over to help the old man, Felix winds up yanked into the weird car by Marty McFly himself, who just appears out of nowhere, and somehow, the two boys find themselves thirty years in the past. Because, Marty explains to Felix, Doc Brown has converted his car into a motherfucking time machine.
Which is all well and good, and Felix doesn’t have an incredibly hard time believing it - he’s read a lot of sci-fi novels, so under other circumstances, this would be a dream come true. But they are also stuck in 1955 with a broken car and no way to get home, Marty has somehow managed to prevent his parents’ meet-cute by getting himself hit with his own grandfather’s car, and Felix is now forced to spend time with his own teenage parents, who are turning out to be just as self-entered and irresponsible as everyone in present-day Hill Valley has always told him.
Plus, Felix now has to help Marty play matchmaker for his parents while simultaneously hiding his feelings and watching Marty’s own mother flirt with him.
He’s starting to wish he could go back to being the invisible, bitter, abandoned kid. ❞

WIP Wednesday
Got tagged by @galauvant to share a bit of a WIP, and I think she must have known exactly what she was doing when she tagged me because this is actually entirely her fault. Just...don't even look at me okay PLEASE DO NOT PERCEIVE ME RIGHT NOW. ---
“It happened, didn’t it?” George asks.
“Uh…what happened?” Marty hedges.
George gives him a look. He says, “It took a while, I’ll admit it. But, son.” He claps Marty on the shoulder, waits for Marty to meet his eyes. “I write science fiction. You yourself asked about time travel, that day in the cafeteria.” He shakes his head, huffing and scrubbing a hand through his hair. “Thirty years ago. Thirteen years before you were even born.”
Marty is frozen. He never really expected his parents to put it together. Why would they think of a random kid they met when they were teenagers, who was only in their lives for a few very weird days? “I…” He stalls, no idea how to continue.
“Your mother has no idea,” George says. “But me… I don’t think you realize the difference you made in my life. It stuck with me, Marty. And one day, I looked at you, and I saw him, and…well, it was impossible, but by then you were already friends with Doc, and what do I know? I make a living off impossibilities.”
“Dad, I…” Marty swallows. Sags. “Last week. It was last week, and I’m. God, I don’t even know what I am. I don’t…” He trails off again, overwhelmed by all of it. How heavy, how huge it all is. Way too big for him. Never mind what he is, he doesn’t know who he is, how he’s supposed to fit into this world he helped create but doesn’t have any memory of. “Everything’s different,” he whispers, wrapping his arms around himself. “You and Mom and Linda and Dave, me and Jennifer, it’s all…it’s better, but it’s not my life. Not really. The only person who’s familiar to me, the only person who still makes sense, is Doc.”

“How far up does it go?”
“All the way, I suppose,” said Emmett. “The universe is theoretically infinite in size.”
“Far out.” Marty heaved a sigh. “Doc. I don’t like that.”
"Really? Personally, I take great comfort in the insignificance of my existence within the unfathomable scale of the universe.” He leaned on the workbench, bringing his head down level with Marty’s eyeline. “You know, in the grand scheme of things, every single living creature on earth is infinitesimally small. On a cosmic scale you and I are essentially of a size. Isn’t that interesting?”
“If you say so."
When Doc Brown realises there's something living in his lab, he thinks he has an unusually smart rat. To his amazement, he finds himself with a four-inch tall teenager on his hands - a teenager who is lost, and alone, and a long way away from home.

20 Questions for Fic Writers!
I'm finally getting around to doing this after @professorsaber, @mythical-bookworm, and @daryfromthefuture tagged me! Sorry for the delay (it's been a week)!
Under the cut because it seems I felt the need to write my life story today as it relates to my body of fan work. :)
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
I'm currently sitting at 51.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
650,606 (of which 58K are shared with co-authors)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Predominantly Back to the Future with a lot of Pirates of the Caribbean, Iron Man, and National Treasure in my rearview mirror. I've also contributed one-shots/ small works to 19 other fandoms over the years!
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
What to Expect When She's Expecting - (137) - Iron Man
Where You Were (Time Circuits #3) - (95) - BttF
Where You're Going (Time Circuits #1) - (72) - Bttf
Principles of Compromise - (70) - Pirates of the Caribbean
A Fracture in the Space-time Continuum - (69) - BttF
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Most definitely! I love interacting with the people who have taken the time to read and comment on my work, even if it's a simple thank you!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Ooo hoo hoo. I might have to poll some people for this one. My first reaction would be There Are No Roads (Time Circuits #2.5), but as the ending is technically an alternate series of events, I'm not sure it counts as an official 'end'. I'm big proud of it, though, because most initial reactions were somewhere along the lines of "oh my GOD." :)
That being the case, Once Upon a Time in the West wins hands down, mostly because I didn't even see the plot twist coming until the fourth chapter of this six-chapter fic! And it delivered an epic sequel!
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oof. Don't come at me like this; I'm just now realizing how much angst I really write because I've narrowed it down to maybe two of my Ao3 fics? Sheesh.
I'm going to go with the only 5+1 fic I've ever written, The Manner of Giving. It was five times Marty failed at giving Doc a gift, and the one time (the end) is when he succeeded.
Where You Were (Times Circuits #3) also gets a nod because it's the end of my trilogy rewrite, and I like to think I ended it on the happy note everyone deserved.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I've never gotten a scathing flame of a review, thank goodness. I did have someone ask me on FFN once why I was writing an OC for Marty when he had Jennifer in canon, and while it was tempting to just say "don't like, don't read," we ended up exchanging a mature and constructive dialogue and respectfully parted ways.
I also once, long ago, before I ever planned to seriously pursue writing, had one of my fics added to a "Worst of the Worst" fandom collection on FFN. It was a terrible fic written by an inexperienced teenager, but I still find something like that distasteful and uncalled for, mostly because, as the author, I wasn't able to remove my work from the collection. And it's still there. And I'm still mad about it. Oddly, it's ensured I hold myself to a high standard and never put anything out there that could be considered for a "Worst of the Worst" collection again. So, screw that guy, and thank you.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No. I've never wanted a tell a story where that was essential to the story. Now, I've recently included/ alluded to more mature situations in the last year for the first time in my 20 years of writing to get me out of my comfort zone, but no graphic, extended scenes.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I have! And the craziest crossover I have is FFHQ. Imagine all the characters in all the fandoms in one giant office park drawing up contracts to appear in fics, meeting with fanfic authors, collaborating on crossovers, etc. It's a lot of paperwork, meaning each character has a secretary. That's a lot of secretaries, so there is a list of "subs" who fill in as floaters when a secretary is out, and this crazy crossover follows three OCs as they bounce around random fandoms each day. This baby is my crackfic, the idea I escaped to in those eight years of depression when I wasn't doing so hot. If you're up for it, I promise it's lots of fun!
Honorable mention goes to the BttF/Elf AU I wrote for our server's Secret Santa exchange last year: Pennies From Heaven.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
*inserts Ben Affleck smoking meme*
Yes. And it's… I'm just very over this form of "flattery".
When I was still in high school, I was writing a pretty successful National Treasure fic when a reader told me they found the story on another site. The person who stole it was writing author notes at the beginning, like "Find out what happens to them next time! I've got great stuff in the works!" I emailed that website, and they kindly took it down and banned that user.
Last year, I had someone on Wattpad steal the Time Circuits Series, rename it the "Flux Capacitor Series", and switched out Emma's name with "Dawn". Two things that had me cackling: When I have Marty call Emma "Em," Marty was calling Dawn "Da," and you could see several places where Emma's name wasn't backspaced all the way out of the text. I confronted the "author", and they wisely took it down, telling me it was just so hard to write it themselves. You bet your ass I have this person still on my alerts list to keep an eye on them, and once a month, I am searching Wattpad for my own fics.
Novel HD/ Novel WW also stole Time Circuts off Wattpad for their website, scrubbed my name from it so that it said it was written by "Anonymous", and put the stories behind paywalls. I caught wind of this about a quarter of the way into the last story and took everything I had off Wattpad. I saved the links but they no longer work, and I can't even access the website anymore. I'm not sure if it's gone or if, because it is a foreign site, they somehow blocked our region from accessing it.
I also had FictionHunt take all of my stuff off FFN! It took several months, but I finally got them to remove my stuff from their site. I might not have minded so much if they had asked me, but that's too hard, I suppose.
There was one website called MovieFanficChains way back in 2005 I gave permission to to host my PotC fics, but aside from FFN and Ao3, that the only place with my permission to have my stuff.
If you see my work elsewhere and it has not been linked back to me, let me know. I'll do the same for you. :)
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I know of.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've done a few roleplays with @daryfromthefuture, where I wrote for Doc and she wrote for Marty. Our most well-known roleplay-turned-fic would be the 1885 scarlet fever sickfic Lean on Me (When You're Not Strong).
I've also been part of the silly blind writing game in our Discord server aptly named Back to the Future: Discord.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
I don't know. This is hard. I'm a romantic, and I make the excited Andy Dwyer face every time a ship is hinted at. I have so many I love, but the mainstream ones that immediately come to mind are Tony/Pepper (Iron Man), Sherlock/Molly (BBC Sherlock), Jamie/Brienne (Game of Thrones), and Reylo (Star Wars).
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I wrote a National Treasure story in high school called Another Clue, and it was one of my first real attempts at an OC insert. It did fairly well, given my talents at the time; I incorporated an OC, but I focused on crafting a canon-like treasure hunt more, and a lot of people complimented that.
So I started a sequel, One More Clue. It built a bigger story around the first, highlighting a treasure hunt that required the help of a rival and two friends seemingly trying to out-betray one another. I got about 12 chapters and 69K into One More Clue before life took over. I last updated it on June 1, 2010, and I left it at quite the cliffhanger with Riley turning Ben into the FBI only to learn the FBI guy was working for the rival and UGH, I keep meaning to go back to it. I have all the notes!
The problem is, I would have to rewrite Another Clue at this point because it's a hot high schooler's mess. You could tell as I wrote One More Clue that I was applying what I was learning from my writing classes in college. While Another Clue didn't have that luxury, it showcases some strengths that compelled me to pursue a writing major (AKA I can make a decent history-driven treasure hunt).
So, while I could finish One More Clue if I really wanted to, it would be pointless unless I overhauled Another Clue first. Which I've thought about. Because National Treasure is my guilty pleasure. I'm just fairly certain no one would be around to appreciate it if I put all that work in now. :)
16. What are your writing strengths?
I've consistently been told it's dialogue, and I find myself agreeing with that. The single lines of dialogue that turn a whole story on its head or tell a whole story of their own are what I live for.
This is the DUMBEST example, but there is an episode of Spongebob Squarepants where Mrs. Puff is freaking out because she gave Spongebob his boating license just to finally get him out of her class, and she's spiraling. She arrives at "I'll have to change my name, move to another city, and open another boating school!" or something like that.
And then her voice just goes dead flat and her eyes narrow and she says, "No. Not again."
And I lose it every time! But you know there's a WHOLE story there just by that little bit of dialogue! I love that! And I love implementing it where I can, whether it be in a comedic or dramatic setting.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm wordy. When I give myself a word count goal for a project, it inevitably goes over, but it gets shaved down some in editing.
Thankfully, I got a hard lesson in this in one of my college writing classes. I turned in a prose-y poem I was quite proud of, and in the next class, the professor handed out copies to everyone. We proceeded to workshop (i.e. destroy) my work, whittling the word count down by half when it was all said and done. And while I was mortified at the time, I've since thanked my professor a few times for that day. That one lesson lives in my brain every day, and I am right back in that classroom every time I edit a work, trying to figure out what the most succinct wording is, what is un/necessary, and how to play with my line breaks. Criticism is daunting but so, so worth it if you can find the courage to apply it!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I did this for the first time in Once Upon a Time in the South. I have a headcanon that Buford's baby momma is a Spanish actress at a small theater in Pine City, and he had to get something from her. This woman speaks very little English, and it was a challenge to stay true to that because (a) I don't speak Spanish and (b) my brain just struggles a lot with foreign language translations. Me being me, I wanted the most accurate and realistic translations I could get, ones that didn't sound too formal. Then you add in the fact that it's 1893, so there's a time-period language barrier, too. Ultimately, I'm happy with the end result, but I don't see myself going out of my way to do this again.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Pirates of the Caribbean! What a fantastic playground in which to practice storytelling! What really got me hooked on this "I might try writing for real one day" thing was listening to the writer's commentary on The Curse of the Black Pearl DVD when I was 15.
Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio gave excellent insight to this story I was enamored with and how they came up with it! "We had Sparrow and Swann, so we figured we shouldn't give Will a bird name" cracked me up. They covered everything — what challenged them, what rules ("guidelines") they stuck to ("leave the kiss for the end"), stuff like that. But what lit me up was hearing the entire backstory while the credits rolled, about how Barbossa was Jack's first mate until Barbossa committed mutiny and all that jazz. There was so much story to the story! That was a big, big day that influenced me. :)
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Oh, gosh. This is tough because the favoritism depends on the reason!
I'll forever love Principles of Compromise because after abandoning it several chapters from the end and not touching it for eight years, it was the first story I came back to and finished before returning to the Time Circuits Series. It was the first plot-heavy story with canon characters I attempted and completed (most of my works up until that point had been rewrites or headlined OCs). Finishing it was the stepping stone to all the writing I've since completed (30-some works)!
Favorite all time though? I'm a mom; you can't just ask me to pick a favorite kid, and this is just as mean. :)
(But for real, it's probably a tie between There Are No Roads (Time Circuits #2.5) and Once Upon a Time in the East )
Tagging @retro-hussy, @jowritesfanfiction, @writingwife-83, and anyone else who wants to play!
Thank you so much for tagging me, friends!! I don't know why, but I love doing these! Sorry again it took so long for me to get to. ❤️
