Enchanted AU: Christmas!

Max pressed a palm gently into Daniel’s side and pushed him back onto the sidewalk and out of the way of an upcoming cyclist. They were out in the shopping district and Daniel was doing that thing again, where he was looking above them rather than in front. The city had started putting up their holiday decor, so there were new things to enjoy. Up ahead in the city center they were erecting a fairly large tree. It was impressive, Daniel looked plenty impressed, if a bit unnerved.

Grabbing his shoulder again, Max turned Daniel into the store he had requested they go to. They were buying Christmas decorations today and Daniel had been extremely excited. They’d just come from a shop where they ordered a tree to be delivered and now it was time to find things to decorate it.

“What colours should we get, Maxy?” Daniel asked excitedly, he was looking around with wide eyes, hands clasped in front of him as if to keep himself in check and not touch anything. Max thought that was fair because there were quite a few things in the store that looked breakable if you even looked at them too long. 

“How did you even know about this store?”

“Sophie suggested it.” Daniel was biting his cuticle again, looking at Max as if he was waiting for him to disagree with the shop choice. Max shrugged, if his mother suggested it, then it more than likely had what they were looking for.

“I dunno. Maybe gold, I think?” Max said, answering the original question as his way of confirming that he didn’t mind the shop.

“Yeah, but gold and what? We can’t just have a gold tree, Maxy.” Daniel teased, a grin on his face and a sparkle in his eye. Max smiled back helplessly and shrugged.

“I dunno, red maybe?”

“Gold and red it is!” Daniel sauntered off, looking at everything with a bit of childlike wonder. Every now and again he would zero in on something as if listening, before walking over to far corners of the shop and picking things up. 

Max wandered around as well, picking up little knick knacks style ornaments that caught his eye. Things he thought Daniel would enjoy as well. He made a small offering pile at the cash register. Similar to the piles of dead things the cats used to leave him. Max smiled at that.

Daniel wandered over eventually with a small shopping cart filled with decorations. All in their own packaging, it looked overwhelming. But Max trusted that Daniel knew what they were for. He watched as Daniel took in the small pile of trinkets. His eyes furrowed then widened in happiness. He looked to Max in confirmation that he could touch one.

Daniel took a small cat ornament into his hand, it was gold and shimmered in the lights.

“This is Sassy.” Daniel smiled then picked up the almost identical red ornament. “And Jimmy.” he looked up at Max through his lashes before looking back through the rest of the trinkets selected by Max. There was a paper plane and a bird. Daniel felt a flutter in his chest, he was touched.

He noticed the display that Max had apparently taken the ornaments from and scanned it quickly. His honey orbs locked on one in the shape of a car, it wasn't a race car but it reminded Daniel of that day in the mountains more than anything. And it was blue. 

He placed it in the pile and watched as Max took it in and a smile slid on his face as he placed the memory as well. There was a small blush on Max’s face as he put the car back within the group of red and gold. Daniel felt his heart swoop in his chest. Oh no.

He bit his cuticles as Max paid for everything, trying to not wince at the total price of the haul. Max didn't bat an eyelash so Daniel would try to not make a thing about it.

They managed to fit the bags in the car and Max led Daniel around the shopping center in search of a restaurant to have lunch at. They got a seat on the patio of a bistro and Max pulled out Daniel's chair for him.

“There's a Christmas market being set up, we can go there if you want?” Max asked offhandedly, skimming through the menu. Daniel looked over at him with a smile.

“That would be fun, we could go when everyone comes? The boys would love it.” Daniel rested his head on his upturned palm. Max tried his damnedest to barely look at Daniel more than a glance. He knew he would stare otherwise.

“Yes, that sounds good, I think. We could do it and the tree lighting maybe.”

“Ace!” Daniel grinned then placed his order when the waiter came by. Daniel tried to ignore how domestic it felt, having lunch at a restaurant with Max. It felt like a date almost, but Daniel wasn't going to think too deeply about it.

It would be what Michelle always called a ‘day date' (not really) where you run an errand and maybe get a meal. And you talk and enjoy each other's presence. If this were a date (it wasn't) then this would be a nice one. Daniel would still tell Michelle about it, but he'll make sure she knows that it was all platonic and non-date-like.

They continued to chat about the upcoming holiday season and all the things Daniel wanted to do for the boys. It was a lovely afternoon, the air was getting cooler and Daniel knew soon he wouldn't want to come outside without a hoodie. As it stood, he was ok right now as long as the sun stayed out.

There was a stiff breeze and Daniel shivered, his oversized T-shirt no match for the cooler seabreeze. Max's laugh rang out happily as he noticed. 

“Daniel it's not even that cold yet.” Max teased. Daniel smiled sheepishly and shrugged.

“I'm baby ok!” Daniel complained with a pout. He watched as Max stood from his seat and took off the lightweight cardigan he had been wearing over his tshirt. The same cardigan Daniel had teased him for wearing, citing that he didn't need anything for the current temperature. Daniel had gone to Jimmy and Sassy and ‘whispered’ conspiratorially that he was better at Max in the cold.

Daniel's face reddened as Max dropped the body warmed fabric over his shoulders. It smelled like Max's cologne and deodorant. He looked up at Max's crinkley eyed smile, back lit by the bright blue sky and reminded himself multiple times that this wasn't a date. Max was just a nice, lovely, considerate person.

This wasn't a date, this was just friends getting lunch. Friends who happened to live together– temporarily. 

“Thank you Maxy.” Daniel said shyly. This wasn't a date.

“Oh, of course, it is no problem, Daniel.” Max said, slipping back into his chair. His shoulders seemed to broaden and get bigger now that they weren't being hidden by his sweater. Daniel looked away from Max's chest and biceps that were now indecently front and center. This wasn't a date.

But if it was, it would be simply lovely.

The Little Mermaid 2023 Review

Hey what's going on everyone? Dan here and today I'll be giving my review for the live action Little Mermaid.

Now before we get into the review, let me reiterate what I've said before, I personally don't have an issue if a fictional characters skin or race is changed. My thing is that if it served a purpose like adding layers to the character or using it to bring up an issue in society in the story then I feel it is justified. In the little mermaid's case, her changing race doesn't serve a purpose, she is a mermaid therefore her species itself would create a big enough divide in the story between mermaids and humans. This once again feels like corporations trying to pander and seem "inclusive" by changing already established characters. If they wanted to make an African-American mermaid, they should just make a new character in the Little Mermaid universe and make the story around her. Honestly they didn't even need to do this to the little mermaid because they already had an African-American princess who I feel is underrated and is a strong princess herself.

That's right, I'm talking about Tiana from Princess and the Frog. They tried to make Ariel pander to African-American community and give her this "empower women" checklist when in reality Disney had that type of princess already. One I feel gets overlooked because she came out in a time when Disney was transitioning away from 2D style to 3D so she basically got swept under the rug. This honestly should have been a live action Princess and the Frog movie, it would have been honestly more welcomed than this movie because Tiana is set in a more grounded setting where she has a real world job and deals with voodoo which wouldn't be hard to get VFX for. On top of that, she has defeated her main antagonist with her wits causing his plan to bite him back rather than how in this movie Ariel kills Ursula with a ship which by the way, Eric killed her in the original but I guess they wanted Ariel to be the one to kill her this time which feels like it goes against her character and is meant to check off the empower women checklist. All these things they did in this live action movie, they could have done all of that with Princess and the Frog, it would have made more sense and could have revitalized the Princess and the Frog to a new generation of children but they did not go that route, why? Because Ariel is a far more marketable character and her franchise is more marketable than Tiana and Princess and the Frog. This should show that Disney doesn't care about being inclusive or about social issues, they just care about pandering to social media and making money however they can.

Now for the movie itself, its okay. It wasn't the worst thing I've seen but honestly that is not saying much in a positive way. It does try to redo the original live action movie, but then it has moments where it tries to be its own thing or funny but just completely misses the mark in both ways. It's not as funny as the original and it does its own thing to where you wouldn't even know this was meant to be the little mermaid. The only times I laughed were when I saw the CGI sea creatures because they looked uncanny like Sebastian or Flounder (who is honestly adorable even with the uncanny CGI). The writers must have been out to lunch because the writing has no comedic timing and pacing can be all over the place at times. Like when Eric was trying to talk serious with Ariel about his upbringing and how he feels trapped, Grimsby comes in out of nowhere and ruins the moment which I think they wanted it to be funny but it felt unnecessary. Or the singing, Under the Sea is sung mainly by Sebastian and for some reason Ariel gets in on it when it doesn't make sense and it honestly made the song less enjoyable to me.

The cast themselves did a good job for what they had to work with. Hailey Balle I don't think made a good Ariel, honestly I'm not a big fan of this girl especially after her disrespectful comments at last years Oscars about animation and it shows in this movie she does not respect animation in the slightest, she's a product of the industry in my eyes. Melissa McCarthy as Ursula was probably my favorite portrayal because she's actually a little funny and she actually stayed true to the characters source material. John Hauer-King as Prince Eric was good I liked his portrayal and his dramatic scenes and singing made me laugh because the shots done looked like a Calvin Klein commercial, a cologne commercial or a VEVO music video from YouTube. Besides those, I like Eric's story about him being adopted into Royalty and I wish they would have placed more emphasis on that part of the movie. I gotta give a shoutout to Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, he did a great job as Flounder. No matter what movie he is in, Tremblay gives a great performance like in Wonder, Luca, and Good Boys.

Fun fact: Lin-Manuel Miranda helped produced this film which explains why I'm getting very Hamilton vibes from this film. Like it feels like a Broadway play being filmed if that makes any sense at all.

Overall, this movie was another example of Disney making live action remakes of beloved animated films meant to be a cashgrab that panders to certain demographics and nothing else. It had some good elements in it but wasn't enough to save this movie. I still think a live action Princess and the Frog movie would have been a better concept and movie than this version of the little mermaid.

Rating this film I give it:

5/10

I do not recommend this film unless you need it for a family movie night or to go out on a date like I did but other than that, just watch the original animated movie its a better experience and the great quality of that film is what kicked off the Disney renaissance in the first place, a magic this movie wasn't able to recapture. That's all I have for today

He would love to see his lover in his clothes if they were shorter then him. In fact, he'd purposefully leave out his clothes for you to take. If you don't, then he'll eventually outright ask for you to wear it.

If his partner was taller tho, then he'd love it as well. I mean, I doubt he meets many people taller then him. Just know you are now his personal pillow if he ever feels sleepy.

Loves when you run your fingers through his hair, even if it's tangled. He's used to it, so he'll be comforted even if you're trying your best not to tug and you end up doing so.

If you date him, now you have a child. No questions asked, Yanqing is your son now. I don't make the rules.

If you ever needed a day off work due to stress or what not, even if he himself cannot take the day off. Expect to be pampered none the less :> You have breakfast premade, gifts waiting for you and there's Mimi ready to give you rides around the house if you don't feel like getting up. And when he's home? Cuddles!

He loves staring at you, and is NOT ashamed by it. Who cares if you feel flustered or not? Or if people see or not? He wants to look at his lover and he will.

Probably has attempted to steal JYs credit card once to buy more swords.

When that didn't work he opted to using puppy dog eyes which worked for a long while...until JY got used to it...looks like he'll need to find another way to get swords.

The type of guy who'll say he's not hungry then take your food.

Most definitely knows the history of each and every sword. (Well, most of the history)

His room was stored with so many swords that eventually there's now a room DEDICATED to the swords he gets. Now under moderation.

Cannot bake for the life of him, he tried once to bake treats once for the Cloud Knights to thank them for their work but more batter got on him then in the cupcake trays...

If you're introverted and don't like to talk, that's okay! He'll do the talking, and if you do talk as well. He'll listen and engage with what you say.

If you're more extroverted however, then you two can be outgoing together! I see him enjoying to go on runs and even going on races with his friends! So if you're up for that, then you two can race each other a lot :>

He loves getting compliments and loves giving compliments. If you do as well, then picture a battle with him but it's just who can give out the most compliments in a minute.

Once you two are close enough, he'll see you as a younger/older sibling to him. But he won't say anything.

Max felt like this was all just one big out of body experience. Daniel was hanging off of him smiling down the phone with his family. Because of course he had a phone— everyone did. But Daniel forgets about it apparently and it dies often because he doesn’t charge it. He has better things to do than be tethered to technology– unless it's like videos of animals then he has all the time in the world.

When the call had connected; Grace had been weeping and Joe had looked marginally worried. The moment they saw Max however, Joe looked apoplectic and Grace was gently replaced by Michelle who looked like she was planning to kill Max in his sleep.

“Daniel, love. Where are you?” Grace was sniffling and Daniel’s smile dimmed a little. 

“Mama this is Max! He says I’m in Monaco— its far from Perth. I’m sorry Mama.”

“Danny you don’t even have a passport…” Michelle was confused and exasperated. Her usual emotions around her brother.

“Security must be very lax at the airport.” Joe muttered which had Max snorting. They’d all forgotten about him and he'd effectively gotten their attention again.

Michelle mutters something about trusting random people and Daniel lights up because he didn’t just trust blindly this time!

“Don’t worry Chellie! The cats say he's nice! And you know cats never lie!” They were right about the birds and so far they've been right about Max.

“Well if the cats say he's nice…” Grace had all but calmed down seeing that her baby is fine, but Michelle and Joe were already in action mode. They weren't so convinced about this ‘nice Max person’.

“Danny, can you give us a moment so we can talk to Max about getting you home?” Joe smiled when Daniel sang an ‘of course’ and they all watched him get up and frolic to a daybed behind Max and curl up with the cats. Max smiled unconsciously at his humming, who could stay stoic in the face of this?

Grace eventually flutters off as well– because her boy is hale and whole so she's good– and it's just Max left to the wolves of Michelle and Joe. 

It takes a bit but they eventually believe that he's a Formula 1 driver (lots of cross referencing websites and apps. Michelle was thorough) and that he has no problems helping Daniel get home. The season doesn’t start for a few months so he’s got time. 

Turns out they’ll need to get Daniel a passport, sneaking him back into the country even on a private jet was a felony. 

Daniel was making himself comfortable during all of this, floating around the flat with Jimmy and Sassy in hand, singing to them and pointing out the window. He then started looking at himself in all of Max’s trophies, making faces in the mirrored metal, and singing the names to the cats.

“Oh! Melbourne! I know there!” Daniel excitedly pointed at a circular tray like trophy, the lighthouse on his thigh flashed a golden light and the sails of the ship fluttered.

“I’ve raced there.” Max smiled at Daniel’s delighted laugh. He continued to watch Daniel admire all his hardware and crystals with a fond smile– Michelle and Joe stared eagle eyed and tense. When it seemed like he wasn’t putting on a show, they calmed down a little. Just a smidge.

They allowed Max to go after a few more threats– which was only fair. And he went to take a cat from Daniel. Jimmy curled into Max’s hold and Sassy flopped herself around Daniel’s neck, kneading the air as if high on catnip. Daniel giggled, shrugged and scritched her tummy.

“Daniel do you want a change of clothes? Maybe a shower?”

Daniel started singing a song about showers and sunsets and Max took that to mean that sure, he wanted to shower. He found something non-merchy, a tshirt and athletic shorts, he hoped they fit because he didn’t exactly know what size daniel was.

Easily remedied, however, because Daniel took off his sweatshirt during his second chorus. Max blinked at the expanse of tanned skin that was exposed, and the new collection of tattoos that glowed and fluttered. He serenaded Sassy while she bundled in his arms, cooing and grinning when she purred back. The cherub on his forearm fluttered its wings.

He was smaller than Max anticipated, but still broader and fit. Max guessed it was because his aura was so large that he physically seemed tiny in comparison.

“Is there anything you want to eat? I can order food while you bathe.”

"Do they have pizza here? I love pizza." Daniel swayed where he stood, his inner music never stopping.

"We can get pizza." 

Daniel did a happy dance then sauntered to the bathroom confidently. Max cut himself off from saying something when Daniel pointed to the hallway door while looking down at the cat in his hand. Right…Sassy knew where everything was. It was a …strange dynamic to consider.

While that happened, Max took out his phone and texted Charles for help. He was truly out of his depth and Charles knew how to handle  weird shit. He'd gotten used to being more important than the Pope so he could help figure this out.

Charles came with Lando– because of course he did. Those two were always together nowadays. They could keep a secret– not from each other– but they were vaults otherwise. They were in the living room and Max was just about to start explaining when Daniel fluttered out of the bathroom humming. He was damp and shirtless but was wearing Max’s shorts, Charles’ and Lando’s mouths dropped open in shock.

Max scrambled up to cover Daniel off before he fully got into the living room. “Daniel, where is your shirt?”

“Oh, Sassy said it was uncomfortable so I like decided not to wear it.” He shrugged uncaringly and the skull baby on his bicep stepped forward to keep its footing. Sassy purred in his arms and he went back to staring at her lovingly.

“Do you want another shirt?”

“Max…what the fuck?” it was Lando. Max groaned when Daniel looked around him, beaming brightly. The rose bloomed a little.

“Hi! I’m Daniel!”

Dominic Noble- book content! Has a series called Lost in Adaptation that judges how faithful movie adaptations of books were to their original source material, but also does some reviews/summaries as well. Very publicly denounced JKR after she was revealed to be a TERF and stated he will no longer review anything by her on his channel. Also deleted ALL of his HP videos after finding out she was a TERF (which were his most popular videos), so I have a really deep respect for him tbh. Former Channel Awesome member who publicly denounced them on several occasions, and an all around swell guy.

*Overly Sarcastic Productions- channel run by 2 people who go by Red and Blue. History and Mythology/Literature content, as well as analysis of tropes and media! I've been told their History content can be a bit... Iffy, but I'm not a Historian so I don't know, however if they get something wrong they're good about correcting it for what that counts for. Very interesting to listen to, I've watched Red's Videos roughly 100 times each. Also has a podcast.

*Strange Aeons- fandom/Tumblr history mostly, as well as some history, and weird businesses too. Reads a LOT of cursed content for her channel.

*Lindsay Ellis- Media/film analysis. obviously not as unknown as some of the others on here, but I absolutely adore her content and will forever be sad that she isn't on YouTube anymore.

Cruel World Happy Mind- MLM/explanation of controversial figures. I'm not sure how best to explain her content, but she seems genuinely lovely and is interesting to listen to. Also a victim of Illuminaughtii's ire and deserves some love. The video she made on Blair is a bit outdated since she made it at the start of when this all came to light, but imo it's definitely worth a watch. Her talking about her interaction with Blair genuinely broke my heart.

*Night Mind- Analog horror/Unfiction/ARG content! Analyzes and explains various internet horror pieces, and also has a very nice voice to listen to.

*Lola Sebastian- Film/Media Analysis!

Oooo yes!!! I was debating between the usual suspects for me recently (Dan or Pierre) but Max is perfect.

Max just waking up so confused by the fact this cute guy is just staring at the his men who have guns as if they're nothing, and explaining "well I didn't know who he was, did I? He's just a dude I hit with my bike and wanted to make sure was okay" and when asked about why he didn't call for help or bring him to the hospital, Lando just shrugs and goes "I panicked, and I really needed to get home to Beans" (Beans is his service dog that Lando had left at home while he ran out on a quick errand)

Max is so confused why he has Disney Princess plasters on him and Lando is just looking at him like "Because princesses kick ass?.....also they were on sale and my niece loves them"
