It took me so long to be less stabby!

We talked about this a bit but for the benefit of the readers, I recall saying that while I do enjoy barbecue I'm not any kind of expert about it. Although I did the other day have a conversation with someone from Texas who asked, "So did you find any good barbecue in Chicago yet?" and I said "Uhhhhhhhh not really?" and he was like I KNOW RIGHT

There's ok barbecue here, but nothing especially great. I know that there's great barbecue somewhere on the South Side but I'm never down there so I don't get much chance to sample. And as he pointed out, Texas-style and Chicago-style are very different.

IDK, my love of being a snob about things is warring with my love of sampling true regional cuisine, so it's hard to rank regional barbecue when I want to eat all of it. I do love a sweet sauce, I'd rather have sweet than hot, so I think my tastes generally run towards midwestern, KC-style. For the same reason I like Carolina, because it's that mix of mustard and sweet. I'm big on burnt tips and smoked turkey and I do think you get a lot more of that outside of Texas, where it seems like it's always about ribs and brisket.

But also, because I ate a pretty limited diet as a kid especially when dining out, one of the foods I love most in the world is a grilled hamburger, even though a lot of people don't consider burgers to be barbecue (and of course purists don't consider "grilling" to be barbecue). But if there's a grill going I want to slap some burgers on it. Or some teriyaki chicken skewers. This is probably my California showing.

So I think probably like...KC-style, then Carolina, then Texas, then like, northern-midwest where I am now, and then whatever's happening anywhere west of Texas. But also: hamburgers.

Come to think of it, I don't know if the northeast has a barbecue tradition. Y'all got good cue out there? Don't get me wrong, I love a lobster roll or some steamed crab or slow-cooked baked beans, but I don't think I've ever seen a recipe for like, Maine Smoked Pork Belly.

Anyway I do love A Meat cooked over A Fire in A Sauce, which I feel is what counts. :D

actually my favorite thing about Baikal is the lake itself!

viewed from above, it looks like nothing particularly special. sure, it’s a big lake, but it doesn’t have the surface area of the Great Lakes or the Caspian Sea, right?

WRONG!

BOOM.

see, Lake Baikal really isn’t a lake at all, it’s a deep rent in the earth’s crust called a Rift Valley that just happened to get water in it. and the Baikal rift is one of the deepest and narrowest on earth, making this deceptively placid lake slightly over a MILE deep! that’s bonkers nutso.

like, you think the OCEAN is bad, just imagine being in a little fishing boat on this thing without realizing just how far away the bottom is....

My mind is a confusing place

My mind is pretty awesome at making up really weird dreams - mostly they’re just weird. Not exactly nice, but not bad either. But they can also be nice / still weird but nice anyway.

Sometimes I can pretty easily tell which particular experience or conversation sparked certain parts of the dream. Other times I’m just baffled about the way my brain works.

Last night was the second kind because for some reason I’ve dreamt about meeting  @digitaldiscipline . Not intentionally, we just kinda went to the same place and later realized we know each other from Tumblr.

I don’t know about real you, but I have to say, dream you was very pleasant to meet :)

to a certain extent, I know that people want to keep fandom and advocacy spaces separate and I acknowledge and relate to that- when we are logged on every moment of the day we sometimes need to take breaks and engage with something else for our mental health. I need that too. and there is a very thin line when you try to apply fandom to current events because in all honesty, making headcanons about how your faves would react to X horrendous event can come off as extremely tone-deaf. I get you love your blorbos (I do too!), but actual people are suffering and it can come off as disingenuous to a lot of folks when you try to talk about your characters instead of the very real harm that is going on. HOWEVER, the other account posted in the leverage tag that the crew would be zionists and started that discourse and since it was already out there in our space I wanted to make sure that people know that this blog does not support that whatsoever.

and before this gets misconstrued: antizionism is not antisemitism. I have a lot of love for my jewish friends and followers, but saying that we can't be critical of war crimes and incessant aggression because it is a jewish state is fucking ridiculous. we should be able to hold any and all governments accountable when they do bad things (this absolutely also means I think we should hold the US accountable for enabling them and I live here. every country that is complicit needs to face consequences). saying that israel is exempt from criticism because jewish people deserve a right to a homeland isn't a great take. I completely understand fear of antisemitism and discrimination, but at some point we have to think critically and acknowledge that people are dying by the thousands and standing up for that and calling out atrocities takes precedence. jewish voices for peace has some really good content about this topic

man i really haven’t posted any mermaid stuff on this blog lately have i!!!! which is kind of wild considering it was like, a large majority of my posting at one point haha. But yeah! For you & anyone else who’s followed me more recently, 5 years ago I made myself a mermaid tail, because I was tired of being a person and decided pretending I was a mythical creature was a better hobby/potential career path. Now I do art modeling/sometimes events with it, and swimming/photoshoots just for fun on occasion :) I also will be getting a custom high grade performance quality silicone mermaid tail from my favorite tailmaker, but it’s still a year or two away in the queue.

and haha... well... I have read Seanan McGuire’s books and stood behind her in line at WorldCon this year but I’m too shy to talk to authors I like in general.

unpopular opinion: "firefly" was never any good

Okay. Okay, I have. a lot of thoughts. I’m sorry. And I’m never going to be able to do them all justice because I want to be able to spend the rare few hours of coolish weather on something slightly more important than debating firefly.Here’s the thing, it’s very difficult to disagree with this completely, because the episodes were never correctly aired. And there’s still some debate as to the order they’re supposed to be watched in. However. I definitely disagree. Firefly was good; it had interesting characters, and an interesting setup. And it deserved so much better than it got. And it was never going to get the so much better because honestly the writers it had were never going to be capable of giving it sustainable quality through further seasons. And honestly that’s a fucking tragedy because while it definitely had issues - as everything does - there was so much potential for Firefly to be a lot more than just good, a lot of potential for it’s characters to really grow and change, and a lot of potential for it to be a lot more than science fiction’s sad dead space western that everyone periodically cries about.Have you seen Serenity? Watch Serenity. Maybe that’ll help.
