Happy Holidays everybody! I hope everyone is having a wonderful season! Since I recently got an ask about my personal reqs for where to start with batman, as a Christmas gift to me and y'all I'm finally making a curated list of my favorite batman media! This is 100% skewed to me, it's essentially just a list of all the batman stuff I've consumed, but I might throw in a few others for folks with different tastes! Also, most of these can be found on HBOmax as of now, but I'm including links to where you can watch online where possible! See you under the cut for a very, VERY long guide! Enjoy!
TV!
Hands down, the definitive piece of batman TV is Batman: The Animated Series. Soooo much iconic batman stuff was coined in this show. Also, it has hands down the best characterization of Bruce himself imo. If you're getting into Batman due to dadfred & babybat, here's a list of standout episodes for you!
Beware the Grey Ghost: A whole episode about Bruce's childhood special interest. You even get to see actual baby Bruce!
Eternal Youth: Absolutely precious Alfred episode, with Ivy as the villain no less. Sooooo many adorable moments, like, I don't even wanna spoil it. Just watch it.
Heart of Ice: For one, an absolutely excellent episode of television, and also a tooonnn of cute Alfred and Bruce moments!! Real dad moments for sure.
Harley's Holiday: 100/10 episode in general, and full of Harley and Bruce moments!!
The Lion and the Unicorn: Another Alfred focused episode!! Bruce Dick and Al being famiwy...
I have more, but those are a good place to start. Have a fave villain? Watch all their eps!! Discover new ones! Watch it from the beginning! Watch around and see what floats your boat. There's a redesign in season 3 (The New Batman Adventures) and they bring in a littler robin, Tim Drake. Warning for TNBA in general though, they tease at some really uncomfortable relationships here and there. But overall it has a lot to offer!
After btas I started on Justice League (2001)! I super love it, I adore the other members of the league so much and there's plenty of interesting stories. Justice League Unlimited is great too! Fantastic Bruce/Diana stuff, even though I'm not big on the ship their interactions are beyond precious. These are ensemble pieces so they're not all bats, but they're highly recommended if you're interested!
For some quick silly adventures, Justice League Action is fantastic! It's super funny and cute. There's plenty of batman centric episodes, and it's super lighthearted and fun! No robins or alfred in any of the Justice Leagues (very sparcely in JL/JLU) though, unfortunately. Speaking of silly fun batman shows: Batman the Brave and the Bold is a total blast! There's soooo many heroes in it, if you like any other DC characters there's a good chance they appear!
I just recently got into The Batman (2004), and it's really growing on me! The first season especially is really creative and cool. It's a younger take on batman, and it has seeerrious early 2000s boy/Ben ten/bionicles energy lol, but if that's nostalgic for you you'll LOVE it.
If you like adult cartoons, Harley Quinn is pretty good and funny! Of course it's about Harley and her gang over the bats, and the first season especially can get kinda ick in the adult cartoonyness, but by the third season it gets great (VERY good Bruce stuff in the third season! Honestly in all the seasons). Overall I definitely think it's worth a watch. It is not appropriate for kids though, make sure to look up warnings! If you're especially sensitive to gore/violence maybe skip it.
I haven't watched much of these, but I've heard good things if live action is your style! Gotham follows the villains and older generation before Batman came along. Supposedly very good Alfred and Bruce content, with kid Bruce! For my Alfie lovers, Pennyworth follows the adventures of Alfred along with the Waynes, taking down conspiracies back in England during the 60s. As completely up my alley as those sound, they're not really my thing because they are pretty violent, so beware!
Movies!
Starting off with animated movies, the btas movies come very highly recommended! Especially Mask of the Phantasm! I was super not excited for the romance plot, but it 1000% won me over, it's fantastic. Lots of young Bruce stuff (like early early 20s), which is wildly endearing, and very good dadfred moments!! The Mystery of the Batwoman isn't as great, but it's good fun. Sub-Zero is really good if you like Mr.Freeze! For The Batman 2004, there's the Batman vs Dracula! It is wild but so much fun!
On the animated movies front - Batman and Robin: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs Two Face are absolutely delightful. They're based on the 1960s Batman show, and they go all in on the campy goofy energy!! They're such a good pick me up if you're having a rough day.
As for live action movies, I honestly cannot recommend the 1990s Batman movies enough. Yes, they don't have a great reputation among mainstream comics fans, but they're straight up just wrong. Batman Forever and Batman and Robin are some of the most fun batman content ever created! There is so much creativity and energy and love in these movies, they are the definition of a good time. Absolutely guaranteed to provide childlike wonder, 1000/10.
If you're into the more gritty stuff, The Batman (2022). It's a cool new take on Bats, I think it's an interesting direction artistically. Once again violence isn't super my thing, but I appreciated the Alfred moments and Bruce's potent autism swag. Also, though it's probably a genuinely good movie, I am physically unable to take anything seriously and really enjoyed watching it ironically (there are so many serious moments that land as... pure comedy). Though please be sure to look up trigger warnings first, it's a lot.
Comics!
Full disclosure, I'm not a big comic book reader "^^ I really just read the comic versions of the shows I like and a few miscellaneous others I run into. Here's a list of some of the comics I've enjoyed, but they have no rhyme or reason, they are not cohesive lol. If you're more into comics you want to look elsewhere for advice "^^
All Star Batman: First Ally - I have no context for this series as a whole and I do not care: I'm here for pretty art, Alfred backstory, and father and son behavior. I own a hardcover copy.
Batman: Zero Year - Stumbled upon by accident but thoroughly enjoyed. I don't agree with everything in these (batman writers obsession with characters slapping each other my BEHATED) but its pretty cool overall. Featuring my The Alfred Ever and baby Duke Thomas! There's Dark City then Secret City!
One Bad Day: Mr Freeze - I'm not gonna lie this comic is like... bad. Okay so that's not entirely fair: I adore the art, the baby Dick Grayson content, the Alfred content, and honestly most of the story until the end. Spoiler, but they nerf the daylights out of what makes Freeze such an iconic character. Like, I get what they were doing but... come on. Insinuates a bizarre message too. Still worth a peruse for the good moments.
Batman: the Adventures Continue - a continuation of the btas comic series (the batman adventures)!! It's interesting to see them put more modern storylines in the btas universe. The last few issues (holiday special!) Are at very least worth a read.
While I'm here, The Gotham Adventures is also cute and cool, takes place in the btas universe with the tnba style + continuity.
Same as above, if you like the Justice League cartoon check out the tie in comics, including the recent continuation Justice League Infinity!
Oh I guess this do counts: The Wayne Family Adventures is a very cute comic on tapas! It's very cute, and actually published by DC comics!
My best word of advice: follow your interests! Indulge! There is no right way to explore this franchise! There's so much to discover and there's a little something for everybody. There is no obligation to know every little thing about the mythos, you do not need to read from issue 1 or know all the current updates to be a "real fan". Actualy, do us all a favor and stick it to toxic comic fanboys by having as much fun as you can! Pick and choose! Try it all! Be gritty! Be goofy! Be both! Spend hours poking around on fandom wikis to learn about what you want to learn! There's no wrong way to play, I'm just so happy youre here. Now go forth and be batfans!!!

What are some of your favorite JL/JLU episodes? Any thoughts on them? :0
(ps i love ur art!)
Thank you :)!
I have quite a few favourites!! The brave and the bold is definitely up there, because I think gorilla grodd is really really funny and I love anything where John and Wally get to team up. I also really like only a dream! I think sending the JL to their own individual nightmare prisons is very fun and a great opportunity to explore their characters more. I wish we could have explored their fears a little more in depth than we did, but JL wasn’t really the show for that lol. In my ideal universe it could become a really cool comics plot. Eclipsed is also definitely a favourite even though it’s a little silly! The Justice League getting turned evil by a rock is pretty fun. I also feel obligated to give a special shoutout to injustice for all, because the scene where cheetah and batman kiss absolutely terrified me as an eight year old to the extent that it was one of the few things about the show I never forgot about

saw your post about the 20 questions and I just want to say that Kara is not the only Supergirl! after crisis on infinite earths she died, so to fill the place of "Supergirl" in the 90s there were Linda and Mae (who fuse to make Matrix). I don't know much about them beyond the barest of details but I just wanted to make you aware of their existence!
Oohhh thank you! I definitely need to read more Supergirl stuff. I love her every time she appears in something I'm already consuming, but it's so hard to find a good point to jump in. It feels like for every really interesting, really fun Supergirl appearance, there's five more that suffer from Man Who Can't Be Assed To Write Women As Actual People disease.
Which I guess is a long way to say that anyone who has any favorite Supergirl moments/titles/storylines/episodes should feel free to infodump in the replies/reblogs.
Here's mine: Any episode involving her in the DC Animated Universe (DCAU), which encompasses all of the DC cartoons from the '90s/early '00s, save for Teen Titans. You can see all of the episodes she appeared in on the DCAU wiki, including whether it was an actual appearance or just a cameo.
Her episodes in Superman the Animated Series cover her backstory, which I believe is different from Kara's most common backstory (though it seems like they're drawing a bit more from that one in more recent canon). Plus a setup for a later episode of JLU, and a good old fashioned B movie horror episode.
She has one special crossover episode with Batman the Animated Series/The New Adventures of Batman & Robin where she and Batgirl team up to fight Harley and Ivy and yes the subtext is very gay.
Then the bulk of her appearances are actually in Justice League Unlimited, where she gets some real character development and develops relationships with superheroes besides Clark (most notably Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and Question).
(Honestly I really recommend JLU in general anyway. They made a point to bring in a bunch of lesser-known heroes and give them a spotlight to be badass (Roy Harper even makes a brief appearance as the only thing suggesting the TT cartoon takes place in the same universe). And when they do focus on the mainstream heroes, it's usually to directly and explicitly discuss the ethical issues of being a superhero, being a team of overpowered superheroes, having a weaponized, orbiting base that's constantly surveilling the earth. Like, my favorite episode is Clash, written by the legendary Dwayne McDuffie, which features Captain Marvel butting heads with Superman and eventually telling Supes that he's leaving the Justice League because the League (and by extension, Superman) presents itself as something, but in reality falls extremely short of that ideal. I'm not doing it justice, but folks should watch it anyway).

One of my favorite JLU moments with Wally is during the lex-Wally freaky Friday where lex in Wally’s body is recking house someone exclaims he didn’t know Wally could do that and John says something like “yeah Wally doesn’t do it because it kills people!” I think JL animated and JLU obviously had its problems but it sorta found a way to balance OP characters like Clark and Wally without having to massively nerf them like in yjtv.
If we could have one rivals of jlu, I loved a date between Wally and Linda. I still think there should be a special flash issue with them for Valentine’s Day. Also one change I would make is when some of the jl goes to the future and meets terry and t he future gang….I’d add Jai and Iris II to the team.
yeah!!! jlu is definitely not without its faults, especially as it becomes more dated overtime. it has such a special place in my heart nonetheless <3 it (and the rest of the og dcau) does such a great job with characterization and that balance of super high-powered characters! one of my least favorite wally tropes in other dc stuff is when they needlessly nerf him & his powers!!
but yes! wally is super fucking compassionate at his core! he's the heart of the team and kind of like their humanity in a way! he's just like. a Good Guy and i really appreciate how the show captures that.
the fact that linda was only in ONE (1) episode of this show is blaspheme. dc give linda a bigger role in wally's adaption storylines please. i'm begging you. i love comics but shows are so much easier to consume. give me the good animated wallinda. shout out to flash and substance for giving the people what they want.
JAI AND IRIS II AS THE FUTURE FLASHES..... GENIUS MOVE ANON!!! love it.

Going in blind: Watching season 3 for the first time. Random thoughts.
Tumblr media
Episode 1: I know in the original series She-Ra was the sister of He-Man so I'm curious how much of that will be carried over to this series. Not saying He-Man has to make an appearance, same as how Batman didn't need to show up in Teen Titans. That was Robin's story, not his, and similarly this is Adora's story, not Adam's. Regardless, it makes sense why Hordak was so annoyed with the baby Adora in Shadow Weaver's flashbacks. To SW, there was something different and special about the baby, but to Hordak, whom seems familiar with the world before Mara separated Etheria from the rest of the universe, including Eternia potentially, Adora is just another "First One" child like he's seen many times before. Special in comparison to those who only know Etheria.
Great clap-back from Catra to Hordak, and not entirely unfounded. It's debatable how much he actually cares about conquering Etheria. He has others leading his forces in his war yet all his focus is on his portal creation.
According to Entrapta, productivity of the Horde is up 400% ever since Catra became Hordak's 2nd in command. I wondering how much of that is Catra's direct doing? Is she genuinely just that good of a commander? Is it because she's properly delegating and Scorpia has been handling most of the load? Or is this just because it's in comparison to Shadow Weaver? Entrapta said Catra's focus on First Ones' tech has been greatly aiding them and SW definitely focused more on magic, which was an aid mostly to herself since everyone else in the Horde seems to fight only with weapons and technology. And most of what she saw of SW while she was Hordak's 2nd was her being obsessed with bringing back Adora rather than fighting the war.
Episode 2: Let's see... Hordak's easily an adult and Entrapta is...[checks google] late twenties, early thirties. Oh good, then let's sail this ship!
But yeah, that was a heck of a backstory for Hordak. This reminds me of a video by a Youtuber named Savage Books comparing the villain Steppenwolf in the theatrical and Snyder Cut versions of Justice League and how, while he still wasn't a great villain, just a small addition made him a much better villain, that being a failure in his past and the desire just to go home. And in this case, Hordak is the much better, or at least way more developed, version of that. One of many clones of Hordak Prime but having a defect that labelled him a failure and had him cast out to Etheria, a "backwards world" as he's called it before. If he can conquer Etheria, perhaps by building a portal that'll bring forward Prime's army, he believes that'll prove to Prime that he is not a failure and that he can return home to rejoin his forces. Just this bit of backstory adds SO MUCH to Hordak, including new insights on his past interactions, and keeps him from being a flat character like theatrical version Steppenwolf. His lack of tolerance for failure makes sense when he himself is trying to prove that he's not. It gives him compelling motivation to want to conquer Etheria beyond just power and greed. Not motivation you're meant to agree with but one you can still understand.
I like the story with Huntara too. It's a nice little tie-in to something Adora was talking about with Glimmer and Bow last episode. Adora defected from the horde, not because she was different but rather very much in spite being very much like every other soldier there. She wanted to believe Shadow Weaver may have at least some goodness in her too and now we have Huntara as a fellow defector who realized the evils of the Horde, even if she chose to stay out of the war entirely after.
Episode 3: I legit thought Catra stabbed the goat lady for a second.
After Scorpia asking her why don't they just stay in the wastes I'm seeing a bit of a parallel between Catra and Hordak. They've both found a place where they can be the top dog, where they can do and have basically anything they want; her with the wastes and him with the Horde. They can be happy. ...But there's still this pull they're feeling to somewhere else. Catra back to the Horde and Hordak back to Prime. Because they feel they have to prove something; prove that they're not failures. They could be happy but they can't let go.
And that scene between Adora and Catra at the end. That was such a great line read from Catra's actor. "She left me for you. Everything that's happened is because of you." I got chills.
Minor note: While I'm only judging off the Mara hologram, which didn't have color, I do think the She-Ra outfit looks better with pants than shorts like Adora's She-Ra form. I think it makes it look sleeker, if that makes any sense.
Episode 4: Catra's spiral has turned into a drill and its taking her down as far as she can go. Though something I had to a laugh a little at myself over was that my biggest "Catra, no!" reaction wasn't to her wanting to open the portal but rather when she lied to Hordak and said Entrapta let the princesses in. She was actually a positive influence on Hordak's life and Catra with one move just destroyed that relationship and all progress Hordak had been making.
I'm guessing there's going to be some kind of long-term effect from Shadow Weaver continuously siphoning off Glimmer's magic. The woman is basically a parasite and the magic she uses is very different from the kind Glimmer does. I can't believe it never occurred to me that since Shadow Weaver trained Glimmer's father there might be a connection there between the two of them later in the story. While we don't know about anything that might've happened after she left, SW clearly had enough affection for Micah still to not kill him. I could see her trying to take Glimmer on as a student later like she did him.
Episode 5: There is something kind of hilarious about it being Scorpia's jealousy of Catra and Adora's closeness that causes her to be the first one after Adora to pick up that something is off.
11 is my favorite of the Doctor Who Doctors so naturally I'm comparing all this to the crack in Amy Pond's bedroom wall. Whatever goes in gets forgotten about and basically never existed. Though does that mean Bright Moon isn't going to remember the Horde? Basically that entire place got sucked up in the collapsing reality. There shouldn't be at war anymore because their enemy literally no longer exists.
Adora and Catra had their own little Star Trek 3 moment there.
Adora: "If we don't help each other, we'll die here!"
Catra: "Perfect! Then that's the way it shall be!"
Catra's just so far down her spiral she doesn't even care about getting her own win, just so long as Adora doesn't get one, despite just minutes ago clearly loving having Adora back in her life and on her side, to the point was trying to resist remembering the old reality. Her "perfect" world was them together again but when given the chance (another of many. I love those cuts to their past woven in there) she slapped the hand away.
I'm sure I'm wrong but I'm starting to theorize Madam Razz is actually Mara and just at some point went kind of crazy and started thinking as and Mara were two different people.
Episode 6:
"You are everything I ever wanted in a son. This... This is everything I ever wanted in a life. ...But I've got responsibilities, Van. And...I have to...go now."
-Superman, Justice League Unlimited: For the Man Who Has Everything
That was my favorite episode of JLU, where Superman is trapped in this world that isn't real but still perfect in every way, and the only way out was to give up everything he'd ever wanted, including a son he remembers watching grow up, even if it never really happened. With a similar premise, this definitely helped elevate Angela up a bit for me, whom I was kind just meh with before. I didn't dislike her but I didn't really care much for her either. This episode gave her a lot to work with though, with the heavy sacrifice she made. Not just saying behind to pull out the sword but just simply forcing herself to accept her husband is gone and not coming back. I was right that they wouldn't remember the Horde, but I definitely didn't think of the full effects of them never existing. They never exist, Bow never becomes a rebel instead of a scholar like his dads wanted. They don't exist, Micah never dies in battle against them. Glimmer gets to grow up with her father in her life. Everyone, most especially Angela, has to reject everything they would love to be real in favor of what actually is.
I'm guessing we're going to have Shadow Weaver taking advantage of this situation, trying to act like a teacher and mother-figure to Glimmer now that she's basically a orphan.
I talked before about how Catra and Hordak seem to have a parallel between them, especially regarding failure. Catra seems like she has a very hard time accepting her own failures and mistakes and thus why she more or less uses Adora as a mental scapegoat for all of it. Nothing is ever really her fault, it's Adora's, or Shadow Weaver's, or Hordak's. It makes for a great moment when Adora finally punches back, both literally and figuratively. She's not going to accept responsibility for Catra's actions anymore. She gave Catra every chance to make the right choice and she didn't, so now she has to finally live with the consequences. Heck of a glare She-Ra gave Catra at the end. Very much a "If I ever see you again..." and it certainly scared Catra, at least for a moment.
Now, someone go save Entrapta from Beast Island!
Season 3 verdict: Easily the best season thus far. I know this was technically the second half of season 2 but even in comparison to the full season 1 there was just so much that happened in this, so much that got revealed, and so, so many moments of emotion or tension. Weirdly I feel kind of disappointed that Hordak Prime is probably going to come in now and be the new big villain. I really like our Hordak's motivation and Prime seems like he might just be the generic conqueror for power that Hordak seemed like he was going to be at first. Not saying those types can't work. I love All For One from My Hero Academia and Frieza from Dragon Ball. Those guys are pure evil and selfishness, but they also have a captivating presence/charisma to them.
Naturally, since I bring her up the most out of all the characters, I'm very curious to see what happens with Catra now. She's basically nuked every positive relationship she had with anyone. Entrapta's gone, she threatened Scorpia, Hordak's not going to trust anyone including her anymore now that he thinks Entrapta's betrayed him, and Adora firmly sees her as an enemy. She has no one (those under her direct command don't count) and it's entirely her own fault.

I absolutely adore Flash and Substance pretty much for the exact reasons you list and that gifset you posted of Flash and Trickster might be my favorite scene from the entire DC Animated Universe
Literally my only gripe about Flash and Substance is that they made Linda a Flash fangirl when really Wally should have been a Linda fangirl. But I can overlook this because she’s there and they’re still super cute together. (Though I also have…a lot of headcanons by which I finagle things so that she more resembles her comics counterpart while still fitting in with her character in the show. I won’t derail with those headcanons here though.) And because pretty much everything else about that episode is just perfect.
Anyway, for anybody just joining in, my tags on that gifset were:
this is the purest interaction in all of superhero media i will never understand people who think kind and decent characters are boring catch me out here watching flash and substance on infinite loop chin in hands and stars in my eyes an entire episode about the power of kindness and good people being good to each other yes please this is the content i signed up for
I kid you not, I have never once managed to watch Flash and Substance without having to pause at the end of that scene and just…bask in the goodness for a couple minutes. I mean, the chin hands and starry eyes is completely literal. There’s hand flapping involved usually. And sometimes noises audible only to dogs.
I just really love stories about good people who care in such a genuine way that they make everyone around them a little better, too. Idk if there’s an official name for that character type, but it’s definitely in my top five fictional tropes. And I particularly love the execution of it in JLU generally and Flash and Substance specifically because it’s just so… low key.
I mean, the three other scenes that instantly come to mind when I think of this trope, three scenes that also make me pause and just soak them up every time, are the “help me take this mask off” scene in Return of the Jedi, and two scenes from Mad Max: Fury Road - Capable meeting Nux in the back of the war rig, and Max telling Furiosa his name at the end.
And those are all stunningly beautiful scenes that destroy me every time, no matter how many times I watch them. But they’re also Big Deal Moments. (And they should be!)
What’s so amazing about Flash and Substance is that…there really isn’t a Big Deal Moment at any point in the episode. It’s not a Big Deal Episode, either. Hell, it’s really a filler episode. Just a slice of life in Central City. There’s nothing particularly special about it and that’s kinda the point. Wally’s just…like that. All the time. He’s just a really decent guy, who knows everyone in his city by name, who hangs out with kids at the orphanage and paints old ladies’ fences in his free time, who visits his villains in the hospital, not even to check up on their rehabilitation, but just to hang out.
And this episode takes place less than half a season after the end of the Cadmus arc. The entire Justice League is still on thin ice with the public in general and with the US and world council governments in particular. They’re constantly on their best behavior trying to prove that they deserve to be called heroes at all.
And meanwhile Central City has built a Flash Museum because they love their hometown hero. Because, much as I love Bats and Supes and all the rest, Flash isn’t some half-mythical figure fading in and out of the shadows, or some symbol of hope spotted up in the sky, or somebody who comes in to save the day and then is off to the next town and the next day that needs to be saved. He wears a mask and (unlike his comics counterpart, at least during the period I’m fondest of) he has a secret identity, but he doesn’t actually act much differently as Flash than he does as Wally.
Well, okay. He’s actually got a pretty damn impressive Obfuscating Stupidity act going on, but one of the low key but delightful reveals that comes out of Flash and Substance is that he primarily employs his Obfuscating Stupidity act on the other members of the Justice League. And supervillains, of course. (The non-Rogue ones, anyway. The Rogues damn well know better.) And even then, he doesn’t keep up the act out of any desire to disguise his identity. He does it because somebody’s got to be the fun one in this band of Super Serious Heroes, and it just so happens that Wally likes being the fun one. So that works out nicely for everyone. Well, everyone but Grodd and Lex Luthor, who are perpetually annoyed by his heckling. But honestly they deserve it.
And it gives him an advantage sometimes, being the fun one. Like with Trickster. Wally’s actually friends with James, and the really wonderful thing about that scene with Trickster is that James knows they’re friends, too. It’s not the far more common superhero scenario, where the hero cares a lot about the villain’s hopeful rehabilitation because they feel somehow responsible, but the villain despises the hero and the audience knows that rehabilitation will never happen. Wally genuinely cares about James and James knows it, and knows that he can trust that, which is kind of amazing, on both of their parts. And I suspect that’s partly because Wally is the fun one, so he and James understand each other in a way heroes and villains often don’t.
Because being a superhero is Serious Business. Except when it’s really not. Because your supervillain is a guy just trying to live out the trickster archetype, and there’s a script for that, so hey, you might as well play along. It means people don’t get hurt, and it’s also just more fun that way. And when things do get serious, when your supposed nemesis is off his meds and needs a friend to remind him why he does need them, then you can actually be that friend without a lot of drama getting in the way.
Or, in other words: Nobody gets hurt, and that’s a really good day.

For the character ask: Wally West, Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne and Damian. Pretty please! 🥰🙏🏻😄
OOOOOH YOU HIT LIKE ALL MY MAIN FAVES AMEN
WALLY WEST
Favorite thing about them: Wally’s heart. His heart is HUGE and he is always determined to do the right thing and be the best hero he can be and do the legacy of the Flash justice.
Least favorite thing about them: Honestly? Honestly??? Whatever the FUCK they’re doing to him in HiC. If I’m not being honest, then how they wrote him for the first few episodes of YJ. But boys are boys I suppose.
Favorite line: “We both have a Martian on speed dial and you can’t give me the benefit of the doubt?”
BROTP: Dick & Wally, Shayera & Wally !!
OTP: Spitfire. But I’m also currently trying to find a good place to dig into the comics since all I really know is YJ/JL atm so there’s that.
nOTP: Pretty much anything that’s not Spitfire.
random headcanon: i have a lot of headcanons for aus but. this is wally
unpopular opinion: Wally West deserves better writers and better treatment by DC lmfao
song i associate with them: Ask Yourself - Foster The People
favorite picture of them:
Tumblr media
JASON TODD
Favorite thing about them: Honestly? I definitely noticed that Jason has a lot of compassion and cares very deeply about people, even when he pretends not to. He loves his found family very much and would do anything for them, and that’s what makes a lot of RHATO’s stuff so much fun for me to read.
Least favorite thing about them: While I understand what his moral code is and how it differs from Bruce’s, sometimes he’s really impulsive and it gets him into some really bad situations. Take care of yourself, man.
Favorite line: “Listen to the city on the other side of the walls. The cars racing to places people don’t want to go. The ambulances racing from horror to hope. Listen to the people shouting and laughing and loving and fighting and giving birth and taking lives. Listen for the heartbeat among the chaos of Gotham City... Like I did when I was a kid and slept on the sidewalk on more than one night. There is a world out there in this one city. Can you hear it?”
BROTP: the outlaws and jay!! and jay and his brothers!!
OTP: nothing really.
nOTP: i get j.ay.ro.y etc, that’s cool, but anything within the batfam is a HARD pass from me
random headcanon: Jason finds himself liking the countryside the more he spends time out in it, even if it’s not really anything he’s familiar with. Gotham will always be his city, but sometimes it’s good to get away from the chaos and sit and watch wide skies and listen to the sound of the grass blowing or cows calling to their calves every once in a blue moon. It’s a whole different world.
Unpopular opinion: There comes a point where ripping someone’s family away repeatedly for shock value isn’t fun to read or watch the aftermath of and Jason is the poster boy pin cushion for it. Plus I’m not a huge fan of his new design (or the white hair streak thing either don’t slaughter me)
song i associate with them: Fairly Local OR Message Man - Twenty Øne Piløts
favorite picture of them: miss yasmine putri does NOT have to go as hard as she does with the variant covers but i am GRATEFUL

BRUCE WAYNE
Favorite thing about them: He’s fuckin Batman but he also gives to charity. He doesn’t just beat people up and turn them in for criminal activity, he goes out of his way to supply funding for programs and welfare to help keep people of the streets and tries to give alternatives to criminal activity to stay afloat. Plus adoption man.
Least favorite thing about them: His distance keeping. His family worries about him and he has a whole nest of kids that really, REALLY need some empathy or a very active father figure, and Bruce is written as to be....not the greatest at that. Of course, luxury of comic reading that it is, we can retcon it, but I’m a bit tired of seeing Bruce only acting paternal in moments where it’s a life or death situation for one of his boys. I have a lot of shit to say about him and Jason’s relationship too but this is already too long as it is.
Favorite line: Listen this is really stupid but the dry “yeehaw/yippe kai yay” in n52 I think?? where a goon tells him they’re gonna gore him like a fucking bull and he just coasts ON THEM down the stairs in resposne? fucking power move
BROTP: justice league and his family!
OTP: wonderbat wasn’t a bad idea during jlu ngl but other than that i don’t see anything that’s like “OH GAWD”
nOTP: anything with his family members. oof. big yikes.
random headcanon: Bruce can play polo and has some investments in the TB racing industry. Derby day is fun for the batfam.
Unpopular opinion: jason is right more often than not idgaf what bruce and his moral code have to say about it
song i associate with them: drowning - EDEN project
favorite picture of them: MIZ WE HAVE THE SAME TASTE CAUSE OOOH
Tumblr media
DAMIAN WAYNE
Favorite thing about them: He’s a shit. But he is trying his hardest to follow in his father’s footsteps and not be what Ra’s decided he should be. He endures some awful hardships and still gets back up and steels his resolve.
Least favorite thing about them: Ok so it was fixed with character development but sometimes hE REALLY IS MEAN AS FUCK TO JON AND HIS SIBLINGS PIPE DOWN BABY BAT
Favorite line: “Let me drive.” “No.” “I know how.” “No.”
BROTP: jon and his siblings /dabs
OTP: nothing because he’s a baby
nOTP: da//mijon romantically and anything with his siblings, because that apparently is a thing too YIKES
random headcanon: everyone knows when damian’s falling ill because he becomes overdramatic about minor stuff and says shit like “guess i’ll die” and it pisses bruce off. he drops the whole formal language habit too so that’s how you know it’s fixing to REALLY hit him like a bus in the next day or two
Unpopular opinion: i still think it was ow that he got to be robin and tim got the boot ngl
song i associate with them: You’re On - Madeon
favorite picture of them: literally anything jorge jiminez draws of him is so good

You probably explained this before, but now that you finished off all 3 seasons of BB, where you think you'll go next? Are you going to touch the Epilogue episode of JLU, tackling the issue of whether or not the Cadmus influence of Terry being born with Bruce's ''perfect'' genes potentially undermining his character or not, regardless of what Weller states to him at the end? Will it be a review or another video down the line? Do you plan to review BB comics as well? If so, which?
Great question! I was planning to announce this tomorrow but I can go ahead and announce it now.
First, I’ll be releasing a video review of Return of the Joker tomorrow! Look for that! It’s gonna be great!
After that, this blog will become an archive. But don’t worry, I’ll still be reviewing things! My reviews will be shuffling over to wright-reviews. I’m going to be starting with my second ‘passion’ series, Kamen Rider Kabuto! First review should go up January 7th. And I might toss in some extra reviews like movies or comics.
I’ll be making more video essays, but I need a break from Batman Beyond stuff. In the first half of 2018 I intend to do a three-part series on the sociology of superheroes. I also hope to squeeze in a video on my favorite director, and one on the comic Kill or Be Killed.
I might one day do a video on ‘Epilogue’, but spoilers, I hated that episode and would really rather focus on talking about things I love, not things I hate.
I don’t plan to review the Batman Beyond comics. I only read up to the 10,000 Clowns arc and judging by what friends have told me about recent stuff, I know I’d dislike where it’s currently going. Again, I’d rather focus on things I love!
Whoof, this post has gotten long. But there is definitely more stuff coming on the horizon! Please follow my Youtube channel for videos, my new review blog for written reviews, and if you want updates on any of my plans (or to watch me ramble about how The Last Jedi is to Star Wars what Batman Beyond is to Batman), it’s best to check out my Twitter!

There's a certain group of fans that hold that nothing will ever top the DCAU in terms of representing the DC Universe. As magnificent as it is, I think a majority of people would disagree with that... but even after twenty-five years since Batman the Animated Series's debut, why does the DCAU still have a particular stronghold in the minds of DC fans compared to other media adaptions? Was there anything it introduced that was actually bad or weakened certain characters or concepts in the DCU?

I’m willing to concede - it’s not a guarantee by any means, but I’m willing to entertain the possibility - that if I rewatched that whole series now as a young adult, maybe I wouldn’t have any real problems with this shows’ version of Green Lantern. I definitely recall him chilling out by the time of JLU. But to my 6-year-old-eyes? This was the grumpy guy who kept on telling Flash, the character on this show virtually designed to get little 6-year-old-boys to think of him as the coolest funniest dude ever, to STOP HAVING FUN AND ENTERTAINING THE KIDS IN THE AUDIENCE, DARN IT, BEING ON THE JUSTICE LEAGUE AND SAVING THE WORLD IS VERY SERIOUS AND SOLEMN BUSINESS! Plus he used The Most Powerful Weapon In The Universe™ to make beams and bubbles, and his main ongoing subplot was that he could barely contain his love for a character who is one step away from actually being Hawkman. I’ve liked him sometimes in the comics (his original appearance with him basically just telling cops to piss off for ~20 pages was pretty great), but in general I instinctively hate him in the same way a lot of people apparently grew up hating Cyclops; I guess the writers didn’t want Superman to be the official team buzzkill (though their treatment of him still ended up being one of the series’ weakest points), and for some reason they felt that was a position that needed to be filled elsewhere. I absolutely guarantee the reason they started focusing on Xanshi in the comics again after awhile of I think not often bringing it up was solely, 110% for the purpose of making him as grumpy and goddamn miserable in there as he always seemed in here.
For the most part though, in spite of a few other relatively minor issues - Batman/Wonder Woman never much went anywhere and was debatable at best as a good idea in the first place, more grumpy Aquaman, Hawkgirl while actually a fun and interesting character on this show still I remind you almost being Hawkman - the DCAU was by and large incredibly good. Batman: The Animated Series was outright revolutionary, Superman and Static were awesome, Batman Beyond had no right to be even a tenth as good as it was, the original Justice League was a dream come true, and Justice League Unlimited was both the most ambitious superhero TV show until at least Daredevil, and the best shot at translating the kind of long-form, ever-expanding serial continuity of the Big Two comics universes to television we’d get until the CW’s current superhero explosion. The DCAU is influential for the same reason Watchmen is influential: it represented an undeniable quantum leap above anything of popular note that came before it that can never be replicated, and was also genuinely good enough to set an impossible standard that almost nothing since has even remotely approached. As far as I’m concerned, the Cadmus arc is probably still the best superhero TV has ever gotten, and there’s an excellent chance it’s why superheroes are still my favorite genre today.
That said, it’s not as if there never could have been room for improvement. Yes, most of the characters on those shows were perfect for what they were, but what they are on TV is extremely different from what we get in comics. The DCAU Joker for instance? I love that dude, but he’s not exactly the most developed, devious, complex take on the character we’ve ever seen. Probably because he - probably the most prolific villain in that whole universe aside from Luthor - had 25 full appearances across an entire decade’s worth of television and movies, meaning he only had to have 25 appearances worth of depth, most of them as the villain of 22-minute episodes for children where he just needs to carry the audience through a “how’s Batman gonna beat him?” plot. He’s magnificent in that regard, but it’s not quite equal to hundreds of comics, including some by medium grandmasters, across almost 80 years of stories and character developments for him. That makes him more consistent, but it also means that for the most part they never got to plumb the depths of him in the same way as say, Morrison did. And again, he’s just about the most prolific of that bunch. Darkseid was excellent in those shows, but do you think he could have inspired and sustained years worth of epics the way Kirby’s original did? DC tried to find out when they turned comics Darkseid into the closest approximation of the TV guy they could manage, and it worked out so badly the New Gods have been all but scrapped for the better part of a decade.
That’s the issue. The DCAU was consistent and it was for the most part amazing at what it did, making it probably the best DC Universe in terms of average character quality, but the character and narrative demands of a show putting out 22 episodes a year are almost entirely incomparable with what’s required of a universe made up of dozens of monthly or even now bi-weekly titles by an ever-changing set of dozens of creators. What works in one isn’t going to translate entirely to the other, and while inspiration can absolutely be drawn in both directions, you have to put some real thought before deciding to remake a decades-old character in the image of a version designed to sustain all of 5 episodes of a kids show.
And everything else aside, yes: it’s not as if everything the DCAU touched exactly turned to gold.

Hi! You've been [posting some (excellent, amazing, exactly what we all needed) Wally West content recently, and I know you really like JL/JLU so I wanted to just say that the moment I really knew I liked Wally West was in the JL episode where they fight the royal flush gang for the first time, and King is taunting Wally or whatever about how fast his laser scepter is, and Wally says, "Yeah, but you don't think at light speed." Just the breadth of power that statement revealed, 1/2
the attention to detail about his powers.  And it made me so curious!  The way that clearly impacts the way he fights, and strategizes.  He thinks at light speed; What does the world look like for him?  Anyway.  Largely irrelevant but you liking Wally so much made me want to share.
Um, false, it is always Flash Appreciation Day here at fialleril dot tumblr dot com, so this is definitely not irrelevant.
One of my favorite JL/JLU background details is that the creators are on record saying they made Wally trip and mess up so often because, if they let him use his full powers, the fights would all be over before any of the other characters got to do anything.
But listen...what if he does it on purpose, at least some of the time?
Like, sure, his brain moves at lightspeed and he’s already figured out at least ten different ways he could take down Bizarro right now, but Shayera’s been having a really crappy week and he knows how much smashing things with her mace makes her feel better so...time to trip over a rock. Help Shayera please save me.
