Do you know why some departments are letting their firefighter's have beards? I thought it was a safety thing.

It's long been something that's been up for debate, how much facial hair really affects the seal of our SCBAs. But a lot of the departments who are dropping or altering their grooming policies are doing so because they don't want to be sued over them like DCFD was..twice.

Now you can pass an SCBA fit test (which we have to do once a year) with a beard, at least sometimes. But there is a massive difference between the conditions of those tests and being in an actual working fire or even doing a search of a building with a gas leak. Things like sweat.

I've had my mask fail with facial hair. I used to be on the side of 'I can pass a fit test with a week+ of facial hair growth so why shave'. I didn't like being clean-shaven, I still don't really like being clean-shaven, so one day, when I was butt hurt about having to shave for my shift the next day I put it to the test. I popped my mask on and ran up and down the stairs of my old apartment building...yeah once the sweat started it did not stay sealed. So, lesson learned there. Hair is just too slick when damp, skin you can at least get some traction. At least that's how it works with mine.
