I came to his books late but honestly The Belgariad kind of rules; could not make it through even the first book of the second series though. It lost pretty much everything that was good about the first series lol.

A belated reply, but I will admit that I actually like The Malloreon (if that's the one you mean! if not, The Elenium is my fave Eddings series overall, lol). Something about Garion wrangling with exports, petty resentments, and solving political disputes by summoning lightning storms only to disrupt weather patterns across the globe is totally my jam. And I enjoy that he doesn't actually have to choose between being an immortal sorcerer or a very human political figure.

Also, for me, the seeds of what Zakath becomes are there in The Belgariad, but are really developed in The Malloreon, and he is one of my main Eddings blorbos, so I'd probably love The Malloreon for him alone.

Baron and Peedles

I used to make little comics like this for my daughter when she was two years old. She liked them because I made pictures and stories with her Playmobil characters and then I would read them to her.

She especially enjoyed the fact that I wrote in a character that was basically her, inserted into the plot.

In retrospect, this was a sort of bedtime story ritual.

(If for whatever ungodly reason you somehow found this blog and are reading this as opposed to me just howling into the void, you'll get to see her character in a few weeks.)

A few years later when she has more of an attention span for pictureless storytime I would read chapters of Leigh and her husband David Eddings' Belgariad. And I made different voices for all the characters.

Fun times.

The Belgariad was a comfort read for me over the years. Every time I would feel like life was getting me down I would grab the series and start reading it from the beginning. I found it completely by random chance at a bookstore downtown that has long since gone out of business. The entire (first) series was there when I walked into the bookshop that day, laid out in piles of five books. As a bookworm of a 15-year-old, I took a look at the covers, read the backs, and decided it was absolutely a good investment of my money and time to get them all at once.

And I have to admit, I loved both the colour scheme, the artwork, and the mystery behid those covers.

I inhaled those books. Deeply and often, like the calming fumes of a cup of hot coffee or particularly tasty tea.

And they were never made into anything other than books because the authors (and yep, it's authors plural. It was, sadly, decades before Leigh Eddings was properly recognized as a main contributor to the series and this series would not have even existed proper if it hadn't been for her significant contribution to the characters, lore, plot, and dialogue) wanted people to READ the series and let their imaginations fuel the imagery rather than have it handed to them interpreted through the lens of a television show, movie, or video game.

Can't say I wouldn't have loved to see a big screen adaptation of the novels, but I respect the hell out of that decision.

Tell us about a childhood favorite you've never talked about on this blog?

Oh, that's a hard one, considering I've got zero filter, haha.

Hmm. Probably The Belgariad series by Leigh and David Eddings. It's dated now, in terms of racism and probably a few other isms, but it was one of the first fantasy series I read on my own after my dad finished reading LotR to me.

It's a classic hero's journey/coming-of-age story where an unlikely hero (a farmboy named Garion) winds up being the chosen one fated to restore goodness to the world. And he's going to kick and scream about it the entire way while surrounded by his very own D&D party of friends. (Understandable, if someone told me I needed to save the world, I would also do the very non-heroic equivalent of hitting the snooze button and asking for five more minutes before I need to get up and avert the apocalypse.)

It was easy to read, if a little waffly in places (as 80s fantasy often was), and I liked that it didn't shy away from being silly and humorous. Which was nice, for me, because all the fantasy/sci-fi was turning to grimdark when I was growing up. It was nice to have something that didn't take itself too seriously.

Also, the Rivan Codex is an excellent example of how to track your own world-building. It's by no means a "how to" (it's literally just a codex of everything in the world), but seeing it all mapped out like that makes you realize he had his world-building and lore locked in.

For all the many many many many problems with the Eddings books (which I inhaled as a teenager), they were vivid enough that it's a real struggle not to name my blessèd yet sketchy D&D snake lady Salmissra.

i'm coming in late but i must unrecommend the Dreamers series by David and Leigh Eddings for being bad. The four books are basically just carbon copies of each other, and are so repetitive that I could accurately predict what was going to happen by the third book. Also they rely on deus ex machina to a ridiculous degree, to the point where any conflicts were basically immediately resolved and nothing actually happened. I read the series when I was fifteen and a much less discriminating reader, and even then I thought it was bad. I've never read any other of their novels just because of how incredibly dull it was.

Eddings is one of the really big epic fantasy authors I know entirely by reputation, and also that reputation is 'had one story he spent his entire career writing different iterations of'. So like, this tracks yes.

Twenty Books Challenge

Hypothetically, you are only able to keep 20 of your books. Only one book per author/series. So what books are you keeping? Credit due to @the-forest-library (I have been thinking about this list for like a week straight)

Guardians of the West by David and Leigh Eddings - any of the Belgariad/Mallorean series frankly. I read these series I don't know how many times as teen. Yes, they are a problematic. Yes they are trope-y as hell but I love them.

Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold - inching just barely above Miles in Love or Mountains of Mourning.

Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison - This is a book that always makes me cry.

Whale Talk by Chris Cutcher - A swim team comprised of various kids with disabilities and are deeply flawed but are also attempting to do good things? I wish this was on every book list for teens.

All Systems Red (Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells - I mean all murderbot series is great. Funny story, I told my mom to read this book eons ago and she only read it after a librarian recommended it.

Return of the King by JRR Tolkien - though technically LotR is one book and I don't have single copies of this anymore. But the scouring of the shire just hits me in different places when I read it.

A Child's Anthology of Poetry edited by Elizabeth Hauge Sword and Victoria Flournoy McCarthy - My textbook of poetry when I was young.

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr - Another a book that makes me absolutely sob.

The Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce - I love the Wild Magic Series the most of all Pierce's series. And yes, I recognize the problematic relationship. But also, talking badger.

Sabriel by Garth Nix - I'm sorry the far superior goth necromancer with bells.

First Truth by Dawn Cook - If had I pick one of the truth series. I have an unnatural fondness of a book series that combines magic with Punnett Squares.

Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Narrowly above Midsummer Night's Dream. But the tomorrow speech is an absolute banger.

All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot - Any of the Herriot books. I read these almost to pieces.

Double Whammy by Carl Hiassen - It was this or Squeeze Me. But Skink really deserves to saved.

House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski - Post Modern Horror.

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein - More Poetry of my childhood.

Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson - specifically The Possibility of Evil.

Daredevil vol 6 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee - Graphic Novels count and I will fight you. This has one of the first individual issues I picked up.

Sandman vol. 8: World's End by Neil Gaiman, Micha Allred - Sandman holds a near and dear place in my heart. It was a close call between this and American Gods or Preludes and Nocturnes. But I will have echoes of Crements in my head.

Hawkeye vol. 4: Rio Bravo by Matt Fraction, David Aja - Pizza Dog! Also any of the volumes are fantastic and visually gorgeous.

I did take the prompt literally, but here are five more books I either always buy on kindle/can only get as an ebook. I would pay an extraordinary amount of money for these in print.

I Reap You Not by Catelyn Winona - Second Person done right.

True Porn Clerk Stories by Ali Davis - This causes me to giggle, rage, and cry.

Night Shift by Stephen King - Specifically Quitter's Inc. But frankly any collection of Stephen King is gold.

Hunter Black Page 110 - Weyland's Bay

That is a statue of Vanion Weyland, the founder of the Church. Vanion is a name I cribbed from one of the characters in The Elenium and The Tamuli by David and Leigh Eddings -- someone high up in the Church, actually -- and Weyland is taken from the main character of my very favorite novel, The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Steven Barnes. Just homages to the things I love.
