She was stolen from her family and enslaved in 1994 and the book is a moving tale of slavery in contemporary times, sheding light on the Sudanese goverment’s involvement, as well as the British goverment’s ignorance in this crime against humanity. Mende mentions @waris.dirie, author of Desert Flower and advocate for humans’ rights who experienced some of the same things. She was her support after she escaped. An alternative history begging the question, what if the Manson Murders hadn’t happened like that? While also following Rick Dalton, a movie star trying to stay relevant, and his stunt man friend/assistant Cliff Booth in the waning Golden Age of Hollywood. At like 2.5hrs+ I don’t remember it feeling that long. The sets/props, costumes, audio, everything, were top notch; the peek behind the scenes of the changing eras of Hollywood was neat. The contrast between the “old guard” with Dalton (his hair needing to be in place, what he wore, how he spoke), and the next generation of Booth (aviators, the shaggy hair, the unbuttoned shirts/tshirts, moccasins) was pitch perfect. The flashbacks and jump cuts that helped or contradicted what was said were entertaining, as were the scenes from various Dalton projects (I want that “14 Fists of Whoever-It-Was”, that was supposed to be a movie, in another movie, about another one of his movies, right? - Inglorious Bastards?) #LeoDiCaprio and #JuliaButter’s scenes (both during their lunchbreak and their own scenes in their movie) were phenomenal (all the performances in this movie were). The scenes with Booth at the Manson ranch were tense, I didn’t think the visit was gona end well, which made the final fight more satisfying? justified? especially with what happened in our own timeline? but seeing all the big name cameos (in the movie in general and among the Manson followers) was interesting. While cleaning theaters at work the #RedApple commercials were cringy; like kind of funny, but cringy funny. “The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?“ by Edward Albee @ Theatre Royal Haymarket

I went to see this production on a spur of the moment impulse not having read a single thing about it in advance.  I knew the cast was prestigious- Damien Lewis & Sophie Okonedo a formidable theatrical duo but that was about it. I was therefore unprepared for the outrageous turn of events for which I cannot tell whether being unprepared made me enjoy the production so much more or whether it was just that wonderful- I have a feeling it’s the latter.  It is impossible to review The Goat or Who is Sylvia without a fairly large spoiler alert, so if you know nothing about it I suggest you stop reading & take my word for it, this is a fantastic production with a beautiful set designed by Rae Smith (an architects dream apartment- huge windows & open brickwork, which I enviously would live in); this, coupled with stellar acting from Okonedo & her on stage son, (played by recent LAMDA graduate Archie Madekwe) and excellent direction from Ian Rickson, make this play a scintillating watch.

Now for the spoiler alert: the story revolves around the feisty marriage of Lewis & Okonedo, Lewis plays an award winning globally recognised Architect, soon into the production you find out Lewis is in fact in love & having a relationship with, yep you guessed it... a goat.  Once you get over this shock the play takes on a life of it's own, with each person's reaction to the news adding to the hilarity and creating an almost farce like state of affairs. One of the reason this production is so exquisite though is the way in which the director & actors have chosen to play it, so natural & steeped in realism that it is completely hilarious & yet crushing at the same time, you can wholeheartedly believe a similar scenario is happening somewhere in the world right now.  Feeling all at once pent up with laughter & heartbroken for both Lewis & Okonedo in equal measure, as the story unfolds you are genuinely moved by each character & really feel for them, whatever their perspective, whether appropriate or not. This is a play that makes you question normality & the writer is so bold as to suggest that there is no such thing as a “normal” family.  Everyone has their own idiosyncrasies & although they may not talk about them, the thoughts people have can be taboo.  One of the scenes I particularly enjoyed was Okonedo questioning Lewis on the extent of his affair; as she does, she stalks around the living room, dripping with sarcasm & knocking his prized possessions to the floor- not dissimilar to those youtube videos you see of cats, full of superiority as they knowingly knock their owners items off the table. 

 To conclude, I really cannot fault this production & it is probably the most interesting & surprising production I have seen in the last year.  I strongly suggest you go and see it while you have the chance.
