Ran (1985). In Medieval Japan, an elderly warlord retires, handing over his empire to his three sons. However, he vastly underestimates how the new-found power will corrupt them and cause them to turn on each other...and him.
King Lear adaptations, my beloved. This is genuinely such a staggering feat of cinema - visually sublime and full of tension, texture and complexity. The use of colour and the environment just sings, and I really wish I'd gotten to see it on the big screen. Magic stuff. 8.5/10.

Low Temperature Blanket Chapter 6
Tumblr media
Hi everyone!
After a looong looooooong (2 years, 5 months, 24 days to be exact) hiatus for this scanlation project, we’re finally back with the next chapter. Hooray!
Sadly life commitments on several fronts have been quite demanding on my time these past 2 years but I would like to state that I’m fully committed to my finishing my scanlation projects no matter how long it takes. 💪
So! What have Daisuke and Houichi been getting up to? Well, we’d better quickly revisit where we left off; in chapter 5 we discovered that Daisuke’s cute and fiesty ex-girlfriend Kaori is still in love with him. Just as Kaori was pouring her heart out to Daisuke, who was trying to console her, Houichi walked in and saw them! Shocked and confused, Houichi dashed off in Kurosawa’s car which brings us up to the present. Will Houichi finally be able to understand how he feels about Daisuke? And will Daisuke be able to explain the misunderstanding? Read chapter 6 to find out. ^^

Rashomon (Akira Kurosawa, 1950) Cast: Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo, Masayuki Mori, Takashi Shimura, Minoru Chiaki, Kichijiro Ueda, Noriko Homma, Daisuke Kato. Screenplay: Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto, based on stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Cinematography: Kazuo Miyagawa. Production design: Takashi Matsuyama. Film editing: Akira Kurosawa. Music: Fumio Hayasaka. When I was growing up, Rashomon was one of those films like Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957) that you had to have seen just to be considered culturally literate. Among other things, it's often cited as the career breakthrough of Akira Kurosawa and his frequent star, Toshiro Mifune. But if there's a key to the success of Rashomon as drama it's the performance of MIchiko Kyo in the female lead. Kyo was the star of another 1950s imported hit, Teinosuke Kinugasa's Gate of Hell (1953), and gave memorable performances for Kenji Mizoguchi in Street of Shame (1956) and especially Ugetsu (1953) as well as for Yasujiro Ozu in Floating Weeds (1959). She even crossed the Pacific to play opposite Glenn Ford and Marlon Brando (in yellowface) in the film version of The Teahouse of the August Moon (Daniel Mann, 1956). The nuances of Kyo's performance make Rashomon work; they keep us guessing whether she was the dutiful wife or the savage wanton. As I watch more and more Japanese film of the late 1940s, '50s, and '60s, it becomes clearer that this was a great period for female actors like Kyo, Setsuko Hara, Kyoko Kagawa, Kinuyo Tanaka, Isuzu Yamada, Hideko Takamine, and many others -- most of whose names are unknown to Americans today. As for Rashomon itself, while it remains essential viewing for the cinematically literate, I don't hold it in as high esteem as I do such Kurosawa/Mifune collaborations as  Drunken Angel (1948), Stray Dog (1949), Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957), The Lower Depths (1957), The Hidden Fortress (1958), Yojimbo (1961), Sanjuro (1962), or High and Low (1963). Rashomon feels arty and remote in ways that those don't.

14. Wait for Me (Reprise) by André De Shields, Hadestown Original Broadway Company, and Anaïs Mitchell
sooooo I'm a lil obsessed with the musical hadestown. like, just search my "hadestown" tag. while my fav part of the song is eurydice's part in the last chorus, my favorite LYRICS are:
I'll tell you where the real road lies / Between your ears, behind your eyes / That is the path to Paradise / Likewise, the road to ruin
LIKE BRO
this song happens as Orpheus and Eurydice are starting their walk about of hell — Orpheus leading with Eurydice following, as the story must go. before the song starts, Orpheus asks Hermes, the show's narrator and Orpheus' mentor, if the conditions Hades has set are a trap, a trick. Hermes insists that no, they're a trial, a test. So in these lyrics Hermes is saying to the audience that the real road out of hell isn't the physical path Orpheus and Eurydice are walking on, but the road in Orpheus' head, and the trials he must face on his journey out of hell; the doubts he must face. the next song is Orpheus singing about his doubts that Eurydice is following him and whether Hades has tricked him instead of following through their deal. of course, Orpheus turns around, because this is a tragedy. but the beauty is in the telling of the story and how, after thousands of years, this story is told again and again. the path to Paradise that Hermes talks of is Orpheus overcoming his doubts, and the path that likewise leads to ruin is Orpheus not overcoming them. but we all have a bit of that, don't we? after all, that is where the real road lies.
73. The Unseen Ones by Darren Korb, Masahiro Aoki, and daisuke kurosawa
this is part of the soundtrack from the video game Hades (Supergiant). it plays when you have the max heat for giving the bosses extra power — so, when Hades himself has bonus power. it's a suuuper intense and adrenaline-filled fight!! the entire song is sick electric guitar so there aren't lyrics. the song goes so hard and I have mad respect for the musicians. if you want to get your heart racing and adrenaline pumping, give it a listen!

Not Made In The USA Month :Yojimbo
During Not Made In the USA month I shall view the cinema of various countries ,barring the USA
Today we shall look at a classic of Japanese cinema by legendary director Akira Kurosawa that was later remade as Fistful of Dollars in Italy
Tumblr media
This 1961 film follows A nameless samurai (Toshiro Mifune) decides to pit two warring gangs against eachother to free a small town
This movie rocks .Its a great action flick and a highly influential film, this premise has been made into film a bunch after this (Most notably with a Fistful of Dollars which launched the career of Clint Eastwood ),However I do think it is the besttelling of the tale of a loner taking down two gangs I have seen, and part of that is due to the fact it stars Toshiro Mifune ,an actor who ooozes badass vibes ,his performance as the samurai is spectacular.I also appreciate the film is funny ,the tongue in cheek humor really made it a fun watch .The supporting cast is all top notch,I really like all the odd characters we meet.It interesting to see legendary Takashi Shimura play a dirty old man ,Daisuke Kato is fun as one of the bad guys ,Isuzu Yamada is wonderfully mean as a gangsters wife ,Eijiro Tono has a great dynamic with our hero as his old man friend , and the stand out really is Tatsuya Nakadai as the main heavy ,a gun toting gangster
Overall I loved this movie ,highly reccomended. It might be my favorite Kurosawa film at the moment
