Unpopular opinion but I kinda like having labels. It’s really nice to have a specific word for all the shit you feel. This doesn’t just apply to queerness also. Like I get to point at certain behaviors like that’s Apeirophobia! That’s Hematolagnia! That’s Voidpunk! I completely understand why people don’t like them, but I don’t like how most of the conversation has become that we need to completely get rid of all of them. I’ll probably make a separate post about how it affects a-specs but yeah. This is a nuanced thing y’know

Plant to Talk To

for @dukexietyweek prompt tattoo/ flower shop

Summary: Virgil’s a tattoo artist going into the florists opposite his studio for the first time to get a plant. Ey could have done without a surprise interrogation

He'd seen the flower shop owner 3 times in all the years they'd run shops opposite each other. Every time they were covered in mud with no apron to protect their clothes and leaves caught in their hair.

It almost reminded Virgil of eir childhood with felt tip drawings covering eir skin.

They were called Remus according to Logan who was as close to a regular as a tattoo shop could get and had visited the opposite shop a few times, although never to buy anything. He explained that the shop would better be described as a plant hospital that occasionally sold potted plants or cut flowers.

That description definitely explained the amount of people who were already carrying a plant when going into it and the only addition on leaving was a booklet or plastic wallet.

Virgil had never yet had cause to enter the shop though, since he did no gardening nor had anyone to give flowers to. Today he was going under protest given he'd been told by clients, fellow tattoo artists and now his therapist that plants can help calm anxiety just by being around them. 

Ey knew to expect the mud covered person and were faintly amused that ey couldn't quite be certain if they had a moustache or just a oddly places streak of mud over their lips. Ey could have expected to barely have gotten through eir reason for coming before being interrupted with “What's your age then?”

“Twenty eight?” Ey asked more than replied, confused over how it was relevant.

“Single? What's your job?”

Ey paused before replied, expression twisting in cautious concern,“Yes and tattoo artist?”

“Favourite kink? Any crimes committed?”

“Not sharing, what's with all the questions?” Virgil's hands automatically raised over his shoulders as he stepped back at that question, getting annoyed with getting no answer other than more questions.

The next question came all too cheerfully, “Is the answer violence?”

“It will be if you don't explain this interrogation!” He snapped, glaring and basically looming over the person still knelt with compost and seedlings around them.

“Worst place to get tattooed?”

Virgil paused then, thinking he could at least entertain questions about his job.“Depends on the person but generally -”

“Can you tattoo you number there on me?” interrupted him before he could get to any answer.

He was not going to do that but Virgil just wanted a plant already, so he tried switching it a little to play along,“Only in body paint. I'm not letting anyone have that permanently on their skin. I just wanted a plant, Dude!”

“Let me buy you dinner! I'll bring a plant perfect for a newbie to look after tonight!” Their voice had switched to pleading now, moving the pots from their lap even while eyes looked up beseechingly.

“Gah! You're impossible!” Virgil flung his hands high, turning away from the person. “Fine. If that's what it takes to get a plant, you can take me out. Just tell me what's with all the questions! Or Who you are maybe?”

They jumped up, holding their hand out to shake without trying to get any mud off it. “Remus, human of mud, do not perceive any gender for me.”

“I'm Virgil, check the wristband if you need to refer to me.” He countered, glancing down to flip it over when realising he hadn't corrected it during the interrogation. “I'm from the tattoo studio opposite.”

“I know. Been wondering the best way to ask you to step on me Daddy! Who'd have thought I just had to wait for you to come to me. I thought spiders lured prey into their webs.” Remus rambled.

Virgil rolled his eyes, “Well there's a kink I don't have. So are you trying to say all the questions were cause you wanted to ask me out or do you hit on all your customers?”

“I do! But you're the only one it's been serious in forever!”

“Pick me up at closing time, Mud boy!” Virgil wasn't going to stand blushing in the florists for any longer, and it seemed that talking to Remus would only keep him red. He pretended to ignore the cheers as he left.

Is this behavior in any way okay? No! But it's so much goddamn fun in fiction, with this character specifically.
