Hi again. This is a bit of a rant about Black History Month. I'm not shaming this month or anything, just bear with me.

So YouTube Spotlight uploaded a video called "#CreateBlackHistory: Celebrating Black History Month" on the first of this month. This video got an overwhelming amount of dislikes compared to likes, 8k likes compared to 32k dislikes. Me being black myself, I was pretty disheartened and wanted to know why this was so disliked. I looked in the comments (first mistake) and saw a lot of people saying "it's okay to be white" or "where's white history month" and comments like those got a lot of likes.

Nobody said that it wasn't okay to be white. Its perfectly okay to be White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, man, woman, gay, straight, transgender, etc. Black History Month wasn't created to suggest that black people are better than whites, or any other race for that matter. It's just a month dedicated to a race that has been mistreated since the moment they arrived in this country, and still are for that matter. Same thing with the black lives matter movement: it wasn't created to suggest that black lives are more important than the lives of any other ethnicity. It was just to remind people that black people are people too, whether you like us or not. We are people with thoughts, emotions, dreams, families, people we care about. And yes for the record, all lives matter While I know that we've come a long way, we for sure have a long way to go with racial profiling and police brutality.

Why are some people acting like this month is a bad thing? Or that it's wrong? Instead of hating, we should appreciate this month while we still have it, it could be gone within the next couple years for all we know, knowing this country. Even so, it's just one month, and the shortest month for that matter.

These are just some of my thoughts, but despite all of this, we got Black Panther out of this month. That's something to be proud of at least. And at the end of the day, "Black history is American history". -Morgan Freeman
