My love is a happening
When I worked in the ICU during the third wave of covid I learned a lot.
One of the things I learned about most was how love works.
When I am surrounded by suffering, beeping machines and occasionally actual screams of pain, I found that I am filled with love for those around me.
The people I will never see again that laid in those hospital beds I loved them.
I loved them so much. I've never had love come on so easy or so strong but in the face death my heart fills and overflows.
Love is something that happens to me over and over.
Love is when I applied for all the graveyard shifts so I could make sure all the patient phones got charged at night.
Love is when I asked the patients after morning xrays if they wanted to see the sunrise.
Love is when a grown man who's watched his mother die in front of him, he apologizes to me for sounding angry and I tell he is supposed to be angry, that this is grief, that he can be angry at me if he needs to.
Love is making sure the patient knows what the score of the baseball game the night before.
Love has me sobbing when a patient brought farm fresh eggs to thank the ICU staff and I had to throw them out because of covid rules. I have never cried so hard over eggs.
Love is something I become.
I am happening and so is Love.

Malignant narcissists of the woke or feminist variety
The lads -
Prince Harry (and Meghan Markle) Mo Farah Azeem Rafiq
Matt Hancock deserves an honorable mention, in spite of not being woke or feminist, for going on reality tv ahead of the COVID inquiry in order to tell us that he was just a man who fell in love (as opposed to a philandering pandemic profiteer).
The girls -
Mia Farrow (and Ronan Farrow) Rose McGowan Holly Willoughby (and Ranj Singh)

After COVID, it is necessary to exercise to keep the lungs healthy. Moreover, you have to take care of some things. To keep the lungs strong, drink plenty of fluids daily and 5 minutes of steam every day. And most importantly, do not make any changes in your lifestyle without the advice of a doctor. In conclusion, you can contact Dr. Virendra Singh  at Asthma Bhawan. He has been treating many patients with lung problems for a long time.

In a weird way, as a Jew, I can kinda take Normal Antisemitism™️.
I mean, I understand where right-wing racists are coming from when it comes to their antisemitism. At the end of the day, theirs just comes from fear, replacement theory, etc… It’s easily identifiable. 2+2=4. Yea its shitty, but I see how they got from A to B and it’s a straight line.
But left-wing antisemitism?? Like, how does that happen? I thought the left was about supporting minority groups, encouraging them to speak and be heard. But all I’m seeing from leftists these days (I myself being super fucking liberal, left, etc…) is just waves and waves of antisemitism. And yes it has to do with Israel, but these people are incapable of criticizing the Israeli government without going “all Jews are responsible!” in the process. It's infuriating.
Are all the the world’s Jews, millions of which live OUTSIDE of Israel, now responsible for Israel’s actions? I'M a stupid American! I’ve never even BEEN to Israel, much less know the intricate details of a geo-political conflict whose complexities go willfully unlearned by armchair activists in favor of yelling in all caps for 140 characters.
But what really gets me, and I mean REALLY get me about the whole situation, is the hypocrisy.
Remember how awful it was when we saw waves of Islamophobic hate crimes after 9/11, American Muslims with no ties to al-Qaeda being targeted for the faith those terrorists claimed to represent?
Or do you remember standing against the wave of anti-Asian hate crimes that was spurned on by COVID falsehoods? The “China virus” as Trump so eloquently put it? You remember being pissed about that, not blaming Asian Americans but standing with them against hate?
And hell, I’ve heard there has been a rash of Islamophobic attacks again because of the Israeli-Gaza conflict. That’s fucking awful, and I will stand against that bull shit because it does not belong here, end of story.
But now there are also antisemitic attacks, hate crimes, being perpetrated around the world. And who are the perpetrators now? The left that stood against everything else. There's no widespread ally-ship for Jews like me. There's no sweeping social media campaign, no catchy hashtag, no ice bucket challenge.
Why am I allowed to be condemned for what a country on the other side of the world is doing, when I have nothing to do with it? Why can I have the finger pointed at me when I don’t want the fighting in the first place? Why must Jews be allowed to be the target of this ire when it's already been decided that other ethnicities/religions don't deserve it either?
Now, I am PROUD to be Jewish; it is my culture, in my heritage, in my literal blood. It is in my genetics, my bones, my spoken language, it is in the holidays I celebrate, the philosophies I live by.
But it is also in the generational trauma of my mother insisting I have a passport as a young child, not because we were traveling, but in case we had to flee. It is in her inherent distrust of the government; a card-carrying Democrat all her life, she would always remind me, "if you don't think the government can't turn on you, you're kidding yourself." It is her constant reminders that as a Jew, our assimilation is conditional, our acceptance is political. I felt these, but never as strongly as she did. Not until now.
I am third generation American, and yet I feel like an outsider in the only country I have ever known. People who I thought understood, who were my friends, who marched with me against the injustices of the world, are now calling after Jews to answer for Israel's actions.
I say I don't want the violence to persist and I'm told that I'm, "one of the good ones". I'm told hurt Israelis don't deserve sympathy because, "all Jews are rich anyway, right? Who cares." I tell them my fears about the rising antisemitism and wearing my star of david necklace out. I'm told, "it doesn't matter, you're white anyway."
For the first time in my life, the racists aren't just some crazy KKK members. They're not just Nazis marching around with beer bellies and ill fitting helmets. It's not just some screeching street preacher who claims I'm going to hell after he caught the glint off my star of david necklace. If needs be, I can kick and punch my way out of those. They're just idiots. Isolated, concentrated incidents. It'd be a good story to tell at a bar the next day though a gap-toothed smile and a sling on my shoulder.
But now, both sides are coming after me and my people. Now, it's not just idiots who have all of their views backwards; it's people I thought I could trust to have my back, to go down swinging with me against those Nazis. Right. Left. It's everywhere. There's no escape.
It's coming from all sides. It's coming from social media platforms, from dinners with friends, from posters on street lamps.
I live in one of the safest, most Jewish neighborhoods in America, and for the first time in my life I am truly scared.

niamh charles, "me jealous? Yes." morocco pre-season camp
niamh charles
normally post a covid world there wasn't any shared rooms on camps and that was something you were immensely grateful for. however with a slight mess up from the hotel booking system you suddenly found yourselves all sleeping three to a room until alternative arrangements were made.
it suited you well enough, you'd grown up with five siblings and shared a room for most of your childhood. you'd learn to take up as minimal space as you could, keeping your head down and taking whatever you could get.
so when you were slotted into a room with niamh and jessie you breathed a sigh of relief, much to the canadians protests she didn't want to be the third wheel or witness 'adult activities' as niamh smacked her upside the head and told her to shut up.
the three of you grabbed your bags and raced for the elevator, stepping in and sticking your tongues out at jess, erin and guro who were forced to wait for the next one.
"dibs!" jessie dropped her bags and dove onto the double bed, leaving you and niamh with the single. "oh in your dreams fleming get off!" niamh grabbed the poor girls ankles and dragged her to the floor with a yell and a thump.
"m'lady." your girlfriend gestured to the bed with a charming grin as you helped jessie up who huffed. niamh squared up to her as they went chest to chest, the canadian letting out a war cry and tackling the defender to the floor.
"but you're the third wheel? sure jess!" you rolled your eyes with a chuckle, stepping over them and dropping your bag to the bed, grabbing out your toiletries and moving them to the bathroom.
"babe help!" you heard your girlfriend cry out as you returned to the room, finding jessie sat on top of the taller girl with her arms pinned beneath her, quite the amusing sight as niamh struggled and squirmed.
"i wrestled for fun in college." jessie beamed to your questioning look as you laughed. "of course you did flem." you patted her head and dove onto the bed, niamh finally shoving her off as the two of them continued to smack each other around.
leaving them to it you grabbed your book out and settled on the bed getting comfortable, though before you could even turn a page there was knocking at the door.
"oh i'll get it shall i? no worries." you rolled your eyes as neither of the other girls made a move, too busy now laid down and arm wrestling on the floor as you stepped over them again and hurried for the door as the knocks continued.
"im coming im coming!" you huffed flinging it open, barely able to step aside before a horde of bodies piled inside. "oh do come on in!" you rolled your eyes as they made themselves comfortable.
"you brought it right jessica?" zećira asked impatiently as the canadian jumped off the floor with a nod, rummaging through her bag and unpacking her switch, making a move to connect it up to the tv.
"oh come on! we're in morroco and you're gonna spend the night playing fifa?" you sighed in disbelief as the game loaded and jessie tossed niamh and guro a controller each.
"what else are we supposed to do? we've got curfew remember, no leaving the hotel after eight." guro shrugged moving over so jessie could slot in between her and maren.
"its only six!" you laughed, only receiving dismissive waves and shushes as you sent a pleading look to your girlfriend who was busy selecting her team. "fine!" niamh groaned as she was unable to avoid your gaze any longer, handing the controller to sophie and wriggling off the bed.
"come on then." niahh took your hand and allowed you to drag her out of the crowded room. "i love you." you grinned happily, kissing her cheek a few times as she rolled her eyes as if bothered, cracking a smile and moving to properly kiss you before the doors opened.
"so miss tour guide where we goin then?" niamh chuckled as the two of you strolled out of the hotel, pausing for a moment to look around as you pulled your phone. "theres a beach over there!" you pointed in a random direction.
"or maybe there?" you frowned as you turned your phone making niamh chuckle. "i'll do the navigating then. you just look pretty!" niamh cooed taking your phone and kissing your cheek.
"well that comes easy for me." you shrugged cockily, swinging your intertwined hands as niamh guided the two of you away from the hotel. "oh ice cream!" you perked up, niamh nearly dropping your phone as you yanked her into the small shop.
"see! easy." niamh grinned happily as the two of you arrived to the beach, taking a seat on the sea wall overlooking the ocean side by side. "you nearly done babe?" niamh sighed, head falling to your shoulder with a pleading look upward as her bottom lip jutted out into a pout.
"why?" you laughed, taking another bite of your ice cream. "its gettin more attention than i am." the girl huffed as you gave her a look. "annoyed my lips are touching something else are we?" you teased as your girlfriend groaned, laying down and glaring up at the sky.
"niamh!" you laughed in disbelief, poking the sliver of skin which poked out where her shirt had rode up. "what?" the brunette pouted as you took another bite of your ice cream.
"are you jealous of an ice cream?" you challenged with a smile. "me jealous? yes." she laughed then looked at you dead serious making you shake your head. "you're ridiculous charles." you tutted, gently tapping her nose with your ice cream and a grin.
"baby!" niamh gasped as you did it again, leaving a trail of ice cream against her lips, ducking down and pressing your own against them as her breath hitched in surprise.
but the moment was ruined as something sticky landed in niamhs hair, your girlfriend gently pushing at your chest as she sat up. your hand flew to cover your mouth with a guilty smile, a now empty cone in your hand as the last small mound of ice cream sat melting into your girlfriends hair.
"i mean love you did say you wanted to wash your hair tonight right?"

Just curious. How bad has Biden been at controlling COVID-19 in your view?
First: I already responded to a similar question you left on this post.
Second: Biden has been atrocious for COVID-19 safety and management. COVID-19 is still killing people, and our president has done a horribly insufficient job in mitigating that. "Better than the Republicans" is not the same thing as "good" or "effective." Biden's abysmal reaction to COVID-19 is part of why I'm so thrilled that the Uncommitted campaign for the Democratic primary has achieved some success. That particular campaign is focused on ceasefire in Palestine, but the People's CDC explained in a statement how Palestine is also very much a public health issue. We need to scare the bastard and actually do some of that "pushing him left" that people claimed they'd do after getting him elected. Though it seems to me like a lot of people just settled for, "okay, we got rid of Trump, we don't have to worry anymore."
Third: While I'm at it, people have to do more than vote. You have got to get involved. You have got to do more than participate in the presidential election once every four years. Join a union (may I recommend the IWW?), follow the guidance of The People's CDC, volunteer for your local Food Not Bombs, get involved in a tenants union like the Autonomous Tenants Union Network, read Riot Medicine, get trained in first aid and get involved in a street medic group, read up on your local politics and get involved on the small-scale, do something in addition to voting in the presidential election. Even if you're limited in how much you can personally participate, find the people who are talking about these issues and signal boost them, and share the information with others who may be more able to participate more. If you can tell people to go vote in the presidential election, you can also tell them to go do other things, too.
Now, with all of that out of the way, here are some links related to Biden's abysmal COVID-19 response:

Paul Thornton for the Los Angeles Times: "Covid Still Rages, and the Biden Administration Isn't Helping."
Eric J. Topol for the Los Angeles Times: "The U.S. is facing the biggest COVID wave since Omicron. Why are we still playing make-believe?"
We should have free, universal testing. We should have free, universal vaccination. We should have free, universal treatment. We should have financial assistance for those of us who can't work outside the home. We should have mandated work-from-home for any job that can be done remotely. We should be emptying prisons and paying attention to the way disease and abuse proliferate inside their walls. We should have COVID-19 safety PSAs and government support for universal masking. We should have free distribution of N95s. We should have mandated masking in medical settings and public spaces. We should have a higher minimum wage. We should have healthcare reforms. We should have strong worker protections. We should have improved infrastructure. We should have a president who gives a single flying fuck about how many of us are dying.
And we have none of it.
But we sure seem to have money to keep dropping bombs, arming cops, terrorizing the vulnerable, and imprisoning innocent people to use for slave labor.

Protesters called for end of zero-Covid policy and even an end to the Xi Jinping regime. The sheer number of particiipating cities and universities in this wave of protest have not been seen since 1989, after the June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre where protesting students and citizens were murdered by the Chinese army. Freedom of expression and protest are luxuries in China. Even holding a piece of white paper in public can get you into trouble with the police. We call on Chinese nationals from every corner of the world to join in the #A4revolution and simply post a picture of an A4 blank paper on social media to speak the unspeakable and support the brave fellow Chinese citizens who are taking it to the streets in China." What's Happening in China? The November 2022 Protests
Hello! I know that there's so much going on in the world right now, so not everyone may be aware of what is happening in China right now. I thought that I would try to write a brief explainer, because the current wave of protests is truly unprecedented in the past 30+ years, and there is a lot of fear over what may happen next. For context, I'm doing this as someone who has a PhD in Asian Studies specialising in contemporary Chinese politics, so I don't know everything but I have researched China for many years.
I'll post some decent links at the end along with some China specialists & journalists I follow on Twitter (yeah I know, but it's still the place for the stuff at the moment). Here are the bullet points for those who just want a brief update:
Xi Jinping's government is still enacting a strict Zero Covid policy enforced by state surveillance and strict lockdowns.
On 24 November a fire in an apartment in Urumqi, Xinjiang province, killed 10. Many blamed strict quarantine policies on preventing evacuation.
Protests followed and have since spread nationwide.
Protesters are taking steps not seen since Tiananmen in 1989, including public chants for Xi and the CCP to step down.
Everyone is currently unsure how the government will respond.
More in-depth discussion and links under the cut:
First a caveat: this is my own analysis/explanation as a Chinese politics specialist. I will include links to read further from other experts and journalists. Also, this will be quite long, so sorry about that!
China's (aka Xi Jinping's) Covid Policy:
The first and most important context: Xi has committed to a strict Zero Covid policy in China, and has refused to change course. Now, other countries have had similar approaches and they undoubtedly saved lives - I was fortunate to live in New Zealand until this year, and Prime Minister Ardern's Zero Covid approach in 2020-2021 helped protect many. The difference is in the style/scope of enforcement, the use of vaccines, and the variant at play. China has stepped up its control on public life over the past 10 years, and has used this to enforce strict quarantine measures without full regard to the impact on people's lives - stories of people not getting food were common. Quarantine has also become a feared situation, as China moves people to facilities often little better than prisons and allegedly without much protection from catching Covid within. A personal friend in Zhengzhou went through national, then provincial, then local quarantines when moving back from NZ, and she has since done her best to avoid going back for her own mental and physical health. Xi has also committed China to its two home-grown vaccines, Sinovac and Sinopharm, both of which have low/dubious efficacy and are considered ineffective against new variants. Finally, with delta and then omicron most of the Zero-Covid countries have modified their approach due to the inability to maintain zero cases. China remains the only country still enacting whole-city eradication lockdowns, and they have become more frequent to the point that several are happening at any given time. The result is a population that is incredibly frustrated and losing hope amidst endless lockdowns and perceived ineffectiveness to address the pandemic.
Other Issues at Play:
Beyond the Covid situation, China is also wrestling with the continued slowdown in its economic growth. While its economic rise and annual GDP growth was nigh meteoric from the 80s to the 00s, it has been slowing over the past ten years, and the government is attempting to manage the transition away from an export-oriented economy to a more fully developed one. However, things are still uncertain, and Covid has taken its toll as it has elsewhere the past couple of years. Youth unemployment in particular is reaching new highs at around 20%, and Xi largely ignored this in his speech at the Party Congress in October (where he entered an unprecedented third term). As a result of the perceived uselessness of China's harsh work culture and its failure to result in a better life, many young Chinese have been promoting 躺平 tǎng píng or "lying flat", aka doing the bare minimum just to get by (similar to the English "quiet quitting"). The combination of economic issues and a botched Covid approach is important, as these directly affect the lives of ordinary middle-class Chinese, and historical it has only been when this occurred that mass movements really took off. The most famous, Tiananmen in 1989, followed China's opening up economic reforms and the dismantling of many economic safety nets allowing for growing inequality. While movements in China often grow to include other topics, having a foundation in something negatively impacting the average Han Chinese person's livelihood is important.
The Spark - 24 Nov 2022 Urumqi Apartment Fire:
The current protests were sparked by a recent fire that broke out in a flat in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang province. (This is the same Xinjiang that is home to the Uighur people, against whom China has enacted a campaign of genocide and cultural destruction.) The fire occurred in the evening and resulted in 10 deaths, which many online blamed on the strict lockdown measures imposed by officials, who prevented people from leaving their homes. It even resulted in a rare public apology by city officials. However, with anger being so high nationwide, in addition to many smaller protests that have occurred over the past two years, this incident has ignited a nationwide movement.
The Protests and Their Significance:
The protests that have broken out over the past couple of days representing the largest and most significant challenge to the leadership since the 1989 Tiananmen movement. Similar to that movement, these protests have occurred at universities and cities across the country, with many students taking part openly. This scale is almost unseen in China, particularly for an anti-government protest. Other than Tiananmen in 1989, the most widespread movements that have occurred have been incidents such as the protest of the 1999 Belgrade bombings or the 2005 and then 2012 anti-Japanese protests, all of which were about anger toward a foreign country.
Beyond the scale the protests are hugely significant in their message as well. Protesters are publicly shouting the phrases "习近平下台 Xí Jìnpíng xiàtái!" and "共产党 下台 Gòngchǎndǎng xiàtái!", which mean "Xi Jinping, step down/resign!" and "CCP, step down/resign!" respectively. To shout a direct slogan for the government to resign is unheard of in China, particularly as Xi has tightened control of civil society. And people are doing this across the country in the thousands, openly and in front of police. This is a major challenge for a leader and party who have prioritised regime stability as a core interest for the majority of their history.
Looking Ahead:
Right now, as of 15:00 Australian Eastern time on Monday, 28 November 2022, the protests are only in their first couple of days and we are unsure as to how the government will respond. Police have already been seen beating protesters and journalists and dragging them away in vehicles. However, in many cases the protests have largely been monitored by police but still permitted to occur. There seems to be uncertainty as to how they want to respond just yet, and as such no unified approach.
Many potential outcomes exist, and I would warn everyone to be careful in overplaying what can be achieved. Most experts I have read are not really expecting this to result in Xi's resignation or regime change - these things are possible, surely, but it is a major task to achieve and the unity & scale of the protest movement remains to be fully seen. The government may retaliate with a hard crackdown as it has done with Tiananmen and other protests throughout the years. It may also quietly revamp some policies without publicly admitting a change in order to both pacify protesters and save face. The CCP often uses mixed tactics, both coopting and suppressing protest movements over the years depending on the situation. Changing from Zero Covid may prove more challenging though, given how much Xi has staked his political reputation on enforcing it.
What is important for everyone online, especially those of us abroad, is to watch out for the misinformation campaign the government will launch to counter these protests. Already twitter is reportedly seeing hundreds of Chinese bot accounts mass post escort advertisements using various city names in order to drown out protest results in the site's search engine. Chinese officials will also likely invoke the standard narrative of Western influence and CIA tactics as the reason behind the protests, as they did during the Hong Kong protests.
Finally, there will be a new surge of misinformation and bad takes from tankies, or leftists who uncritically support authoritarian regimes so long as they are anti-US. An infamous one, the Qiao Collective, has already worked to shift the narrative away from the protests and onto debating the merits of Zero Covid. This is largely similar to pro-Putin leftists attempting the justify his invasion of Ukraine. Always remember that the same values that you use to criticise Western countries should be used to criticise authoritarian regimes as well - opposing US militarism and racism, for example, is not incompatible with opposing China's acts of genocide and state suppression. If you want further info (and some good sardonic humour) on the absurd takes and misinfo from pro-China tankies, I would recommend checking out Brian Hioe in the links below.
Finally, keep in mind that this is a grass-roots protest made by people in China, who are putting their own lives at risk to demonstrate openly like this. There have already been so many acts of bravery by those who just want a better future for themselves and their country, and it is belittling and disingenuous to wave away everything they are doing as being just a "Western front" or a few "fringe extremists".

M Taylor Fravel - China scholar, MIT
