It's official, Sally Rooney books are now my comfort reads. After reading Normal People and Beautiful World, I didn't expect much from her debut novel, Conversations With Friends. But this book was just as memorable or even more emotionally stirring than the ones I read beforehand.

The heart of this and her other novels are complex and life-like characters, straight-to-the-heart introspections, philosophical reflections, and one-of-a-kind takes on our digital and social media-focused world.

Here, she focuses on young characters again, with deeply embedded traumas and mental struggles, and how they endeavor to untangle them from their romantic relationships and friendships.

The depiction of their internal realities and the state of this world we live in are simply profound and brilliant. This novel truly cements her status as one of the most prolific writers of our generation at the ripe age of 26 during its publication.

REVIEW . Spoilers . I’m a sucker for a Sally Rooney novel so I had to read this one already! I read normal people and conversations with friends and I fell completely in love with Rooney’s writing. One of the things I wrote in the post was something that came up while I was having a conversation with a friend (pun completely intended) about how much reading this book feels like remembering a dream you once had. The story is told by Frances, a college student, and her best friend Bobbi. It deals with their relationship with each other but also the turbulent one that they develop with a married couple: Nick and Melissa. If you’ve read the book, I want to hear your thoughts on this, but I have to admit I struggled with liking Frances and little by little, I realized that I didn’t want to, and it was even better if I stopped trying. But even though I get that her characters are not necessarily made to be likable I felt like sometimes a lot of the plot was based on miscommunication and pettiness and personally, after a while, Frances started to just piss me off. I ended up rooting for Melissa who, for me, was a much stronger character, I really got excited every time she was in a scene.
