“You have compassion for her.“

You know, I always see this line used as definitive proof that at least Kylo Ren has feelings for Rey. But, come on, words in any language native to its speakers can sometimes end up being misinterpreted or get their proper meanings twisted. Therefore, I started by simply googling the word to get a proper definition:

Compassion [NOUN] - Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. e.g: “the victims should be treated with compassion” Synonyms: pity · sympathy.

(For those confused, in the TFA novelisation, Snoke says "you have comoassion for her" during the scene where Kylo explains to Snoke how Rey is force sensitive.) So now we know the exact definition, we can see that this statement clearly isn't about Reylo, it's just another form of Kylo Ren’s manipulation by Snoke on an emotional level. Pity, concern, and sympathy are feelings that would hinder Kylo’s ability to hunt down and mass murder the remaining Jedi, which is Snoke’s main motive for finding Luke and the whole driving force of the entire movie: Leia’s race to find Luke before Snoke and, in turn, her son does. At the least, Kylo has been seduced to the Dark Side so he could be made into a heartless monster, and he is one. Rey’s line ‘you’re a monster,’ after he kills Han, verbally confirms this. At the most, Kylo turned pretty willingly because of his obsession with his grandfather. In this scene in the book, Snoke isn’t pointing out his student’s “silly school boy crush“, he is deliberately exploiting Kylo's remaining good feelings for a force sensitive being. One that probably won’t turn to the Dark Side as well {or because of the Sith rule of two} and will have to be killed. Meaning Snoke would have done this for anyone, not just specifically for Rey. My point is even emphasised by their next exchange:

The Supreme Leader’s voice was flat. “You have compassion for her.”

“No--never. Compassion? For an enemy of the Order?”

“I perceive the problem,” Snoke intoned. “It isn’t her strength that is making you fail. It’s your weakness.” The rebuke hurt, but Ren didn’t show it.

Btw, I didn’t highlight that line, it’s written that exact way in the book, showing Snoke’s main point is to make Kylo feel weak. He’s going 'hey, you still care about this living thing, and that's because you're weak and you still need me to guide you and make you strong,' and in the long run, Snoke will probably always preach that Kylo needs him, to guarantee Kylo’s loyality. Kylo is hurt but doesn’t show it because it matters what Snoke thinks of him. Then we have Kylo’s line, written on it’s own showing he isn’t hiding an alternate opinion as I’m sure the Reylos will preach: ‘well he’s just skipping over his words cause he’s desperate for an excuse since Snoke has caught him out on his true feelings about her!‘ But, no, there’s nothing, not even a physical description to accompany the line to indicate he could be lying - such as looking away, getting nervous, or a shifting of his position. To be honest, I don’t why Reylos are so attached to the book’s extra version of events anyway, since it’s the same place where Kylo Ren is described like literally every abuser to ever existence and Rey’s description of his interrogation sounds like any rape victims’ account of their abuse.

But then these young, white fangirls come in, with their manipulated and warped views of receiving romance from white men and their racist dismissal of Finn as a love interest, and they think that this line shows Kylo specifically cares for Rey. If anything, not only are they romantising Kylo's abuse towards Rey, but also Snokes abuse towards Kylo. I’m well aware a lot of them only really care about Kylo Ren and just use Rey as a self-insert, or else they would see how fucking creepy and abusive he is in her eyes in canon. Even Daisy Ridley agrees. She described Kylo chasing her in the forest scene as terrifying and when she brought Reylo up in an interview, she did so to talk about the ship in the same sentence as the words ‘abuse’ and ‘manipulation’ and basically said out right: ‘find out who Rey’s parents are first and then see how you ship it.’ It must be so hard for her to have this abusive bullshit shoved onto her breakthrough character. And again in the Dame Judi Dench video, Reylo is raised because it’s just another Star Wars theory circulating at the moment. Admittedly it’s circulating because the Official Star Wars website states in both their bios, there’s a mysterious connection between Rey and Kylo. But, well who would have thought it?!!!? That there would be a connection between the main hero and main villain of a story?!!? Not to mention it also says in the exact same bio that ‘Kylo was determined to destroy the last remnants of the Jedi, fulfilling the legacy of Darth Vader.’ (The whole thing is written in past tense so no arguing that’s “how he used to feel.”)

Like, at the end of the day, he’s still her abuser and Rey deserves better than to be the punching bag of his redemption. Not to mention Star Wars isn't about redemption, it's about choice. Darth Vader chose to save his son at the end of rotj, but funnily enough that didn't redeem his villainous actions from the previous movies. We already have great examples of choice in SW from Finn, Galen Erso, and Bodhi Rook, to be honest we don't need it from a pasty white guy like Kylo. Really, Reylos, please stop and educate yourself, it’s hurting my poor gay heart.

TL;DR: This compassion line has nothing to do with Reylo and is just another way Snoke can control Kylo. It's his way at making Kylo feel weak for having positive emotions towards something Snoke doesn’t care for. Reylos should understand that when Snoke says “compassion,” it doesn't mean that Kylo loves Rey. @shitreyloshipperssay
