Book Review: Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young

Torn about this one.

On the one hand, I was drawn in by the superstitious, atmospheric, small town nosiness and eeriness of Saiorse Island, which is clouded in witchcraft as well as murder mystery, giving the place a cloying, almost inescapable feel. I enjoyed the everybody-knew-everybody of it all, knowing all the while that something was amiss. That the town villagers were more questionable than they let on and knew more about Lily's murder, about the orchard, than they had intimated to Emery over the years.

On the other hand, I thought much was left wanting. I kept waiting, and hoping, for more from the story than I got.

Magic was present, though not at all prominent. It was more like a spooky undercurrent that breathes against the back of your neck, unsettling your nerves little by little, warning you that something's off, that something sinister lurks beneath the earth. And while ordinarily I would be okay with that, in this case, it felt hollow. A cop out to explain a death that had tainted everything and everyone on the island. It just seemed as if magic was thrown in there like an afterthought instead of as a necessary plot point. There was no explanation as to why it was on the island or why certain characters practiced it while others didn't. I actually think this story would have functioned better as a standard murder mystery with atmospheric vibes. No magic at all.

August and Emery were fine on the whole as characters, I liked them, but I didn't understand the need for a fourteen year gap after the orchard fire/Lily's murder. They didn't read like thirty-somethings to me. Stuck and stagnant as they were in their lives - frozen, really - I felt like it would have made more sense for them to have been younger. For less time to have passed. I think it would've fit better had they been in their early to mid-twenties. I also would've preferred for the story to have been told exclusively from their POV. Having other characters pipe in occasionally was deflating and distracting, even if it did highlight how interwoven the community was on Saiorse.

Unfortunately, I struggled to connect with this one as much as I'd hoped. That said, with lovely descriptive passages and spooky vibes that are optimal for fall, other readers may not have the same problem.

#sims 4 #ts4 #ts4 build #so im kinda back again #this year has been crazy #i move to Paris in september 2022 to study there two semesters #then i came back to spain and move to a new city #well is not really new since its my hometown but i hadn't live there since 2015 and I missed it so much #and between work uni and RL things I didn't have much time to play sims #so here I am again but you know how inconsisten is this blog so dosen't expect regular posts lol #probably i will not have time to play in the future but who cares #now about sims #i've been trying to make some trees DR with new meshes but they refuse to show the correct textures in autumn winter and spring #I suspect it has to be something related to vertex paint or any information attached to the leaves mesh that i'm not getting in s4s #i'll be posting that later to see if someone can give some advice #also had a problem with a building deco for Hendford wich I converted from Cities Skylines #i'm really frustrated with s4s and me lately #well i think its enough for today #come back for more ted talks

chapter 11 of tbhwo is gonna be a really big hit for those among us who were like reading Stormlight and were like you know this is pretty good but it would be improved 20 fold if there was 2-4k words out there about Sadeas being sad and pregnant. Hi dear,

I don't wanna get my hopes up, but probably them not wanting to be associated with her anymore and waiting for things to cool off.

Whatever is happening, we know Olivia will come out with a counter PR campaign soon, playing the victim and how Hollywood and social media are against women and women being successful. She's already started doing that. Bc of all of that I think it's easy for her to throw Harry under the bus as another fake, and another man in power who hates women.

So whatever they do, they probably would want a more quiet breakup....just silence, and them not together, with rumors and no confirmation. Then at the end of the year once he has a break from tour they'll issue an official thing saying they've been broken up. Then he can go on the second leg of his world tour and she can fuck off into oblivion.

THAT would be the ideal scenario. If his team are smart enough and are able to deal with this well. And if she agrees to terms. God knows what she'll do.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE SCAR FOR MCYTBLR SEXYMAN

I've seen people mention they want propaganda, SO I'LL GIVE THEM PROPAGANDA!

So... why should you vote scar as the mcytblr sexyman, other than the aforementioned points? Well, I can give you many reasons!

(quick preface: aside from point 1, I'm talking about the characters, not the content creators! this will make sense of why I'm saying this on point 4...)

Scar hasn't campaigned he's in the finals. There is a chance scar will win the entire thing. AND HE HAS NOT CAMPAIGNED, OR EVEN MENTIONED IT. hell, there might be a chance he has no clue it's going on! I truly respect joe hills and their campaigning but c'mon. c'mon, you HAVE to give the tumblr sexyman crown to the guy who doesn't have a clue about the competition, it's just so fitting! AND HILARIOUS

Round 3 Round 3 was trench warfare for many contestants, scar included! we went up against TECHNOBLADE, and WON! Do y'all really wanna see the guy WHO DEFEATED TECHNOBLADE to wind up in SECOND PLACE? I know I wouldn't!

Joe Hills is too fucking cool to be a tumblr sexyman Look, if this tournament has taught me one thing, it's that joe hills is one of the coolest and most interesting people I've heard of. He's too cool, in fact. I know I prefaced this in my earlier post, but I wanted to break it down further here. Tumblr sexymen over the years have shared a vast difference of traits, but have ended up having a few qualities that are checked out by all of them. One of these traits? Being at least moderately pathetic. It's part of why they're tumblr sexymen in the first place; the people of tumblr love their blorbos to be at least a little pathetic! joe hills tho? I'm sorry but I can look in a thesaurus for antonyms of "pathetic" and it would be pictures of joe hills- JOE HILLS IS THE OPPOSITE OF PATHETIC, SHE IS SIMPLY TOO COOL

ships ahoy! smth that I've noticed in most, if not all tumblr sexymen, is that they're often shipped with either themselves and/or other people. Now, I don't know exactly how many people scar is shipped with, but I have seen him shipped with the following on this website: grian, cub, bdubs, ren, mumbo, himself (mayor!scar x captain angry eyes, on more than one occasion!!), and even during the polls I saw multiple people on my dash draw ship art of scar and schlatt during their battle. That is 7 alone, and I know there's possibility of there being a couple more out there.

villainous roles tumblr sexymen are well-known to be either canon villains or having morals that are quite gray. And scar has many villainous and/or morally gray roles. Here, I'll list some of them out! mayor!scar (lead of HEP, a villain to the mycelium resistance); captain angry eyes (villain to the hippies); wizard!scar (morally gray- he sells "magical crystals" to others that's just stained glass with 0 magical properties); hotguy & royal court!hotguy (morally gray- hotguy has shot both "villains" and regular people, and scar on the royal court was downright murderous, looking for anyone to kill for any reason, including the king)

smooth talker scar's a conman at heart (which can tie in with my previous point, actually). he's the type of guy that could talk me out of my own home and I wouldn't even be mad about it! I literally watched this man scam people out of their ARMOUR in third life. There's a reason he was able to sell those "magic crystals". And while this isn't a trait you see in all your tumblr sexymen, I think it's a trait that makes scar one of the best candidates for being mcytblr's sexyman

competent, but not too competent this ties into something I mentioned in point 3. the people of tumblr love their blorbos and sexymen to be at least a little pathetic. They also love for them to be threading the line of being both competent and incompetent. Like, these characters can draft up magnificent plans, but those plans are gonna end up failing so bad in due time because of some obvious detail they were missing. and scar is literally that character. He is 100% that guy who would land the sickest mlg-water bucket and then kill himself accidentally to something ridiculous about a minute and a half later.

you're not immune to the good times YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE. YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE. YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO THE GOOD TIMES. VOTE SCAR! VOTE SCAR! VOTE SCAR!

And without thinking twice about it, Harry pulled Draco closer and pressed their lips together in a soft kiss. He didn’t care about the people in the room or the stories that would be printed in The Prophet tomorrow. He only cared about the man in his arms and the smile that was blooming on his lovely face.

How the Wallflower Was Won (Last Chance Scoundrels #2) by Eva Leigh

What do you get when you mix an adept gambler, a bluestocking wallflower, and a marriage of convenience? That's right, you guessed it. HISTORICAL ROMANCE CATNIP.

The ingredients to that can only be found with Finn and Tabitha. It can only be blamed on their flaming attraction toward one another despite the oh-so "practical" terms of their arrangement. It's no secret that neither one of them have love down as a requirement for marriage. It's not in the cards. No bets necessary! In fact, Finn and Tabitha come together out of necessity - she, to gain admittance into an all-male intellectual society which requires her to have a husband; he, to make good on his deal to find a wife in under a year so that he, his brother, and his friend, Dom, don't have their funds cut off by their ultimatum-making families.

Since Finn has a learning disability, he has low self-worth. He believes he's not a suitable enough match for the erudite catch that is Tabitha, having heard his whole life that he's "unintelligent" and "ignorant," so he initially tries to set her up with Dom instead. That crashes and burns pretty quickly. In part, because Dom's still reeling from his wrecked nuptials with Willa, and in part, because Tabitha's trying to get into the Sterling Society before a new educational reform bill is passed. She, like Finn, has been underestimated. Undervalued. Invisible to men and society for much of her life, especially by way of her academic gifts. With heartbreak marring her past, she has learned to operate by logic rather than emotion, coming to believe that her heart is not something she can afford to risk.

The stakes are high for them both in different ways, but together, they weigh the logistics and decide to marry, leaving love completely off the table...

That is until love calls, anyway. Forcing them to roll the dice and play one Ace of a hand.

This was a solid follow-up to the first in the series. I liked how fervently Finn worshipped Tabitha for her mind, the way he championed her intellectual pursuits at all costs and seemed to fall more in love with her because of them. Tabitha was equally supportive. She not only encouraged Finn to open his own gaming hell but she saw he was shrewd and analytical and made sure he knew that. (In this house, we love couples who support each other!) I didn't care for their climactic conflict at the end, though. It seemed to build up out of nowhere and the apology afterwards was too one-sided when they were both in the wrong.

That said, I was grateful for the hefty dollops of spice, for the marriage of convenience trope, which is a favorite of mine, and for the foundations that were set in place for Dom and Willa. (I have a hunch they're going to ruin me. And to that I say: bring it on!)

9/11 Fahlanruk (Thai)

GaGa Sundays, 10 eps, 45 min ea.

Fahlan (smart jock) meets Sherbet (edgy bad boy) sparks fly and they end up in bed together. Fahlan feels a lot more for Sherbet than is allowed, so he hides his feelings. Fahlan’s friends Ping and Tap, try to help their boy win his man, but are struggling with friends-to-lovers woes of their own. Looks to be a strong contender in the Thai BL pulp dumpster fire of joy arena. It’s using tropes we rarely see and it tonally seems like a combination of Nitiman + Y-Destiny’s players episode (2 of my 2021 favorites). I like sexually messy and identity confused college dramas but Love Mechanics might have tapped me out.

Y-novel adaptation featuring a pining seme and high heat, from director Koo who has a long back catalogue of shows, if not a great track record with BL (Club Friday and Tonhon Chonlatee are his).

9/14 Once Again (Korea)

Viki Thursdays, 8 eps, 25 min ea

Time-slip fantasy BL from Moving Picture studio & Idol Romance behind Wish You, Ryu's Wedding, Tasty Florida, Tinted With You, and Kissable Lips (also forthcoming Happy Ending Outside The Fence and The Circumstances of Pungdeok Villa Room 304). Stars actors (no idols) Moon Ji Young (also star in an upcoming BL The New Employee), Lee Hyuk Jun, and Kang Woo Jung.

JaeWoo lives with childhood trauma. He travels to the past where he meets JiHoon, a law student who JaeWoo admires most in the world. Will he be able to change both their fates?

This is actually the inception story of the characters of AiNi in Tonhon Chonlatee which I didn’t realize. Now I loved those characters, but I disliked that series from a story standpoint and this is the same author so I’m now nervous.

Comfort the Boy AKA A Shoulder to Cry On (Korea)

Adaptation of Dongmul's manwha A Shoulder to Cry On, high school set, features a teasing confident gay, and a rich/poor pairing, about homophobia/gossip putting a scholarship in jeopardy.

JungWoo is a writer who disappeared after being treated unfairly in the publishing industry. TaeYoung, the head of a publishing company, admires and wants him to write again. JungHyun became a star by borrowing JungWoo's writings. The three characters interact and drama results. Stars idol Leo of VIXX.

Summary of 2022

Significantly less than last year given general exhaustion, but I’m surprised I had something for every month! And comparing the art to last year’s, uh, I didn’t realize it, but it’s definitely gotten better! Can’t say it’s a quality over quantity thing because though I drew less, I only spent a little bit more time drawing. Just got better, I guess. How dandy. Oh, and June when I did that commission was when I finally learned how to draw human heads, which I’m very happy about!

Was a very rough year, but hopefully next year will be better! Came out of 2022, and I’m here for 2023!
