“We can see why sexologists have had their work cut out this century attempting to adapt women to the male sexual function despite their inherent inadequacy. Sex, for the woman, had to be constructed from scratch.
Many women seemed unable to appreciate the aesthetic attractions of the penis. Davis tells us that a woman 'is not always greatly stimulated even by the sight of her husband when he is obviously about to make love'. Some sexologists advised the husband to hide his erect penis from his wife lest she run from the room in revulsion!
It was recognised that even supposing a woman wanted sexual activity with a man she was likely to prefer everything but sexual intercourse. Davis explains:
She probably likes the petting, the love-making preliminary to intercourse, very much indeed and never seems to have enough of it. But she must not lose sight of the fact that although this part of sexual activity is going to be increasingly enjoyable ... it is nevertheless only the physical and psychic preface and buildup to the complete sex act. She must learn how to attain complete enjoyment as soon as possible.
Women had to be convinced that 'complete enjoyment' resided in that practice they wished to avoid, rather than in those they actually wanted. This made the sexological task particularly difficult. As 1920s sexologists had not flinched when faced with the realisation that possibly as many as 100 per cent of women had indifference or distaste for sexual intercourse, so forties and fifties sexologists set themselves diligently to the task of constructing the sexual practice of coitus as 'sex' for women and men in the face of women's determined resistance.”

Chapter 1
By: MuOn
Sheldon Cooper was sitting on the edge of his bed with his legs crossed, flipping through his dictionary. It was summer, one month since he had graduated from University of East Texas. As the days dragged on, he ran more and more out of things to read. He’d read every comic book he could get his hands on, even ones he didn’t care about. He’d even resorted to reading the cookbooks in his mother’s kitchen, and now knew how to make 32 different types of jello pie.
On this particular day, he couldn’t handle being inside any longer and regretfully dragged himself and his mother’s cookbook out onto the front porch to read. He’d only been sitting for 2 minutes when the neighbor kids noticed him. They quickly started making their way to the chair he was sitting on, until he could no longer pretend he didn’t see them.
He put the book down on his lap and looked up and then, unamused. “Can I help you?” He said.
“Learning how to be a housewife, Shelly?”
Sheldon closed his book to reveal the title. It read, “Everyday Texas Housewife’s Guide to Cooking to Please”. He sighed and opened the book to the page he’d left it at.
“No, I’ve just run out of other things to read,” He said, not making eye contact.
The oldest boy nudged his brother. “No, I think Sheldon’s decided to become a housewife!”
They both keeled over with laughter.
“I have not!”
“Oh, so then you’re learning how to please then?”
This comment confused him and he wasn’t sure how to respond. “I don’t understand,” he said.
“Of course you don’t, you brainiac freak,” The oldest boy said under his breath.
“Boys!” They all heard from a distance. “Come back where I can see you ‘fore I kick your asses!”
The boys turned their heads back at Sheldon and stared for a moment, then the older boy began to walk away.
The youngest boy leaned in and whispered, “See ‘ya later, faggot,” before running off and following his brother.
Sheldon sat still for a moment, watching them make their way back down the block, slightly baffled, and he usually wasn’t baffled. He had heard his fair share of mean words. Freak, brainiac, dickwad, shithead, and others. But that word was new. He needed to know what it meant. This led him back inside, on his bed, carefully looking through his dictionary, searching for the word.
“Ah ha,” he muttered as he pinpointed it and began to read. The book read, “a contemptuous term used to refer to a gay person, especially a gay man.”
Dumbfounded, he silently closed the book and put it back on its shelf. Now, Sheldon was 14 years old and had a college degree. He knew what a gay person was. He’d read more than one research project about gay animals recorded in the wild, which was a common topic of discussion in the neuroscience department, as it indicated that human homosexuality was nothing but another part of animal nature. But he couldn’t understand what he’d done to make the boys think that he was a homosexual. It wasn’t as if he was making any suggestive or lewd comments or committing an act of indecent exposure or reading anything suggestive or partaking in coitus with another boy. What on Earth could lead them to believe he was a homosexual? He decided the only way to find out would be to conduct an experiment.
