July 13: Modern Miller 13.1

Sooo... several years ago I started writing this Miller-centric Modern AU, randomly, composing and posting it in 300-500 word chunks whenever the mood struck. No outline, no plan, no sense of scale. I did this for a while. Got down like 13k, somehow. Then I hit a wall. Just ran out of ideas.

I have not updated this fic in 4 years.

Now, here is an update.

I'm thinking of cleaning it up a little (a very little!) and posting it to AO3, not as a sign that I'm getting more serious about it or have an endgame but just to make it more readable. For now, crawl through my blog for the context. All previous parts are on the tag "the hospital starter."

Miller wakes up with his phone still underneath his palm, his head squashed against the arm of Clarke’s living room couch like he’s trying to burrow through it using his skull. The leather sticks to the side of his face. His legs are tangled under him, and a blue crocheted blanket has been slung over the lower half of him, dripping down over his waist and to the floor.

He kicks the blanket fully off and taps at his phone to show the time, has to blink at it blearily in the glaring morning light from the Griffins’ picture window. His lockscreen is a pic of his friends from college. For a moment, he has no idea where he is, or when.

8:48 AM. No new messages. No alarm set.

Someone is moving around in the kitchen, clinking silverware against glass, running water.

He finds Clarke at the sink, rinsing out dishes next to an open dishwasher. At some point last night she must have abandoned the couch and gone upstairs, changed into the oversized t-shirt and soft, blue shorts that she sleeps in, but so much of that last hour or so is a blur. Her bare legs and feet are in shadow. Splashes of light from the window above the sink highlight her hands and catch on the spoons and forks.

“Damn,” he says, by way of greeting, as he hauls himself up onto one of the stools at the center counter. “You’ve become a morning person?”

She flashes him a smile that may just be a fuck you and closes the dishwasher. “And I made eggs,” she says. “And toast.”

He can smell both, and the comforting, familiar-morning-scent of coffee brewing. Clarke grabs plates and starts dividing up the scrambled eggs, and Miller drags himself to his feet again so he can take over the toast. “If we were straight,” he says, over the scraping of butter against bread, “this would be a sickeningly domestic moment.”

“Platonic domestic.”

“Queer platonic.”

“I don’t think that’s what that means.”

In high school, he used to stay over at Clarke’s place a lot, especially around sophomore year when he was bored and careless and things with his dad weren’t so great. She didn’t drink coffee then, but he knows she likes her toast half-buttered, half with apricot jam. Some things don’t change.

Your commitment to finding and reblogging the bare few Clarke-centric gifsets on this website is greatly, greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated and beloved.

I am scavenging blog after blog trying to find them, while dodging any more ship related ones. You'd be shocked (or maybe not) how some scenes i simply cannot find or i can only find one gifset of in episode countdowns type sets.

I have the other ship blocked so its easier (slightly) to navigate but @clarkegriffinappreciation is a great blog for all your Clarke Griffin needs although they are inactive so any newer gifsets wont be reblogged! But thank you, i actually have a lot of fun looking for those and i love getting to stare at the scene for a bit longer and pick up those little things about clarke i didnt notice first time around :D

March 21: Modern Miller 14.3

Miller-centric, Mackson, past Briller. For previous parts see the tag "the hospital starter."

“No, but she is the daughter of the head of my department.”

“So she’s got Abby emergencies covered.”

“Exactly.” He pauses a moment, concerns himself only with the lunch that he’s still eating quickly, like he’s too accustomed to having to rush and doesn’t know how to break the habit. Then: “I like Abby,” he admits. “I admire her as a doctor, and she’s definitely been a kind of mentor to me since I started my residency.”

“But she’s intense.”

Dr. Jackson shrugs. “Yeah.”

“Just like Clarke.” Begging the question of whether Abby gets involved in her friends’ business as well. He could ask his dad—but if the Griffins ever tried to play matchmaker for the Sergeant, it probably hadn’t gone too well, and maybe he doesn’t want to jinx this.

“You’ve known her a long time, right?” Dr. Jackson asks, just as Miller takes a bite of his sandwich, so he has to nod around the mouthful and shrug.

“We used to live in the same neighborhood,” he answers, finally, just as he’s swallowing, and with a half-leaf of lettuce still trying to escape from between his teeth. “And her parents are friends with my dad. So it’s...” He shrugs. “Not like being siblings. Maybe cousins.”

“You look out for each other.”

Miller raises an eyebrow. “Does Clarke need looking out for?” He doesn’t mean it in the sense of or does she look out for herself just fine but more like or does she think I do?

But Dr. Jackson just smiles. The expression makes him look boyish, young. “Well everyone does sometimes, right?”

He holds up his hands, all innocence. “You’ll never hear me admit it.”

The way their eyes meet, while they’re still grinning, and then they both look away at the same time—it feels like flirting. Something innocent about it, too.
