This especially is not an invitation to diss on the Jedi, either (because I see you motherfuckers in the tags/notes/reblogs) or Tarre Vizsla (and by extension, Paz Vizsla).

This is my personal "not actually all that serious" beef with Clan Vizsla and Death Watch as a whole.

The Mandalorians are a mess and I find them interesting/hilarious for that. Stop trying to turn my shitposts into imperialistic proganda. For fuck's sake.

Mandalorian History 101

The following is a simplified timeline of all the major events in Mandalorian history leading up to The Clone Wars. This is compiled from the section of The Bounty Hunter Code dealing with Death Watch and Mandalorian history. It is copywrite 2014, the first year of the new canon. Though the book is not included in Disney canon, it was published after TCW episodes dealing Death Watch and not been refuted by anything in current canon, so there is no reason to believe it is not accurate. 

approx. 7000 BBY - The Taung race (Progenitors of present day Mandalorians) cleanse Mandalorian space of its inhabitants and lay down roots

approx. 4000 BBY - Mandalorians fight alongside the Sith in the Great Sith War, but are betrayed - Mand’alor the Ultimate opens up the creed to their slaves and conquered people because their race is dying out - They begin a campaign for galactic conquest called The Onlaught, but it was more to fill out their ranks with new recruits - They are defeated by the Republic and the Mandalorians lay low for a time

approx. 1100 BBY - Mand’alor the Uniter brought the best and brightest Mandalorians from the throughout the galaxy home - Warriors ruled, protecting the artisans, manufacturers, and laborers who supported them, and the vassals and servants who supported them in turn - The Darksaber is forged by Tarre Vizsla (the only Mandalorian to become a Jedi)

approx. 700 BBY - Mandalorians begin to stir again and the Jedi take up arms, nearly wiped them out in the “Annihilation” - The New Mandalorians who rejected the warrior ways gain power when the Republic installed them in the government - The Aka’liit (The Mandalorian Faithful to the warrior way) lived in the shadows, giving the allegiance to the True Mandalores they appointed

approx. 200 BBY - There is a split among the Faithful – some wanted to conquer any potential threats while others argued against starting wars and living by more peaceful means

approx. 60 BBY - The Faithful chose Jaster Mereel as the True Mandalore, who wanted to implement honorable rules of conduct for all Mandalorians on how they earn wealth by bounty hunting or the red trade - Tor Vizsla, who dreamed of Mandalorians returning to their roots as conquerors, split away and formed the Death Watch, becoming the Secret Mandalore. The Death Watch used the Darksaber (an heirloom of House Vizsla) as a symbol of their authority and made a decree than anyone could challenge the Secret Mandalore for leadership and “win” the Darksaber*

52 BBY - Tor Vizsla killed the True Mandalore, Jaster Mereel - Jango Fett’s adopted father

44 BBY - The Death Watch tricked the Jedi into eliminating the True Mandalorians for them

approx. 44-39 BBY - The Great Clan Wars take place within the ranks of the The Faithful - Adonai Kryze is killed in battle - Duchess Satine Kryze of the New Mandalorians assumes the throne of Mandalore - Tor Vizsla is killed by Jango Fett in 42 BBY - The Darksaber is entrusted to Pre Vizsla, governor of Concordia and the new Secret Mandalore of Death Watch, who takes in Bo-Katan Kryze as his protege

Since the Great Clan Wars take place after the True Mandalorians are wiped out, we know that Adonai Kryze was not part of their ranks. The following quote from Tor Vizsla concerning the Kryze family suggests that Adonai was one of his men, or was at least revered by him. Considering that Tor dies shortly after this is written, it’s not a big leap to see how Bo-Katan came to be on Concordia with Pre Vizsla, his successor. 

“Meanwhile, centuries of New Mandalorian lies had left the Mando’ade weak and soft. One of my kinswomen, the Duchess Satine Kryze, had been sent offworld as a child by her father, a mighy clan warlord, and she fell prey to the lies of the Jedi. After father perished in the Great Clan Wars, she betrayed his memory by becoming the leader of the New Mandalorians. Aided by Jedi tricks, she became the newest Anti-Mandalore, whereupon the exhausted Mando’ade flocked to her banner. Some of our warriors were exiled to the moon Concordia. Others – myself included – slipped away to resume the ba’slan shev’la.” - Tor Vizsla

* The decree that one could become Mand’alor by winning the Darksaber in combat from the current Mand’alor was an invention of Death Watch (in canon and legends), so it suggests a strong tie between Death Watch and the Children of the Watch that the latter is so hung up on this “tradition” when it’s only been a thing for about 70-75 years.

HCs about Tarre Vizsla are cool because we know virtually nothing about him except that he was taken from Mandalorian culture as a child, raised and trained as a Jedi (the people Mandalorians are convinced are their existential enemies) and then after being a fully-fledged, blooded and painted adult Jedi Knight, he showed up and became the Mand'alor. The leader of the entire Mandalorian people. Like, what??? the fuck ?? happened??? I know Mandalorian history is notoriously unstable (understatement of the century, moving on) but what kind of position do you have to be in to take a beloathed arch nemesis who nominally claims Mandalorian heritage as planetary leader? On the other hand, he could've just been so Fucking Chill that the Mandos were willing to overlook the glowing blade and the Temple affiliation and the force powers. ✨ Ragnar’s Creature Feature Adventure✨

Hello everybody! Meet Ragnar! He is Paz Vizsla’s son. Maybe he’s a foundling too, just like Grogu.

He’s got a helmet on because he just swore the Creed. But when he was just about done with the ceremony on his induction day, a DINOSAUR TURTLE nearly grabbed him with its huge jaws!!

Good thing Uncle Din and Grogu saved the day!

But things weren’t always sunshine and daisies with Uncle Din and Grogu. One day, Ragnar was faced with darts training with Grogu! It seemed like Uncle Din wanted to teach him a lesson. What’s worse, when he lost to Grogu (he JUMPS!!!! But he’s so LITTLE!!!), his dad Paz thought that Ragnar needed the lesson as well. What a bummer. So Ragnar decided to mope a little but when all of a sudden…

He got snatched up by a RAPTOR who was going to feed him to her Raptor babies!

What a nightmare!!! Ragnar had to stay in the Raptor mom’s food pouch for a night! EWWWW! But then, Ragnar heard his Dad Paz’s voice just when he thought he was going to be Raptor lunch! DAD RESCUED HIM!!

Actually, it was more of Uncle Din and Aunt Bo-Katan and some of dad’s cool friends, but the point was: Ragnar was back home with Dad!

Then stuff happened.

✨✨✨✨ time passes harp music✨✨✨✨✨

A few weeks later, it turned out that Dad and Uncle Din and all the other tough soldier grown-ups had fought a real awesome battle on a planet called Nevarro, and as payment, they have a new home back on Nevarro! Well, Dad said they lived on Nevarro before but it was a real sucky experience. There was decent plumbing, at least.

Anyway, now that the Covert would probably be an Overt (???) since they’ll be able to live out in the open (Uncle Din said so), what new adventures await?

Grandpa Greef mentioned about a…

Uh-oh.

Is that a REPTAVIAN?!

Goodness gracious!! Is there no place safe anymore??

Well, Dad said it was the Outer Rim so safety is like… non-existent. But some places can be safer than others, Ragnar guessed.

Grandpa Greef even had a totally cool and thrilling story to tell about how a Reptavian took a swipe at him and he nearly died! But guess what? Grogu had saved his life! He’s a magic baby! ✨✨✨

Ragnar thought Grandpa Greef was exaggerating. At least the magic baby part.

There’s NO WAY Ragnar would cross paths with a Reptavian! Why does he attract disaster? Dad says it’s all part of being Mandalorian. Ragnar loves his Dad so he doesn’t argue.

Sigh.

And then time passes again!!

Dad told Ragnar that Mythosaurs are just… well, myths! But it turns out that the Mythosaur is real!!! Ragnar thinks that they should just rename it REALOSAUR. Why all this false advertising? Sigh again.

All that Ragnar could think of was this:

All these CREATURES! Ragnar thought again. Are there going to be any more by the time this is over? Dad said: Well, they’ll just have to tough it out. Because that’s what Mandalorians do!

Me: Clan Vizsla fucked up the entire Mandalorian government so badly that several generations of Mandalorians actually believe Tarre Vizsla hated the Jedi. And not only that, they managed to so effectively rewrite their own people's history that the average Mandalorian genuinely believes that the only person who can run their government cannot even do so without first winning the Darksaber in mortal combat. And, irregardless of how well the current Manda'lor might actually be at their job, if the current Manda'lor were ever to lose the Darksaber, then the new Manda'lor can effectively destroy any actual good progress the previous leader put in place.

Because of Clan Vizsla's childish handling of petty clan politics, the Mandalorian people are essentially doomed to an endless cycle of civil wars and planet wide instability. This has resulted, and will continue to result, in the entire planet of Manda'yaim being absolutely decimated and barely void of life, their people scattered across the galaxy, their entire way of life nearly destroyed, and generations of trauma that will take centuries to heal from. Millions of Mandalorians have died as a result of endless conflict between warring clan factions, Clan Vizsla being one of the main contributors to the death toll, due in no part to them founding Death Watch; a terrorist organization whose motto has led to Mandalorians killing their own people, all in the name of a false ancient history that Clan VIzsla came up with to "justify" the horrific actions they took to "defend" their "right" to rule.

Bc of the options you’ve got…

Okay so Maul gets the Vizslas’ asses so he’s got the darksaber. Ahsoka beats him. Ahsoka’s got it.

But then Darth Vader possibly bests Ahsoka, so it’s probably Darth Vader’s now. But also we see Ahsoka come out of the Sith Temple unscathed (as Ezra saved her), too, so how do we know who won? But let’s just say it’s Vaders, bc Ahsoka had help.

Obi-Wan kicks Darth Vader’s ass 9BBY, but then in 0BBY/0ABY Darth Vader… possibly wins against Obi-Wan? Kind of a cheap cop-out bc Obi-Wan kinda just lets the Rapture happen to him instead… but as Darth Vader is the only one to come out of that, I suppose it’s Darth Vader’s again.

But then Darths Sidious and Vader get into it. Both die? But Vader lasts longer… but also he’s dead, so it can’t be his. (And Sidious clones don’t count bc they’re him but they’re not HIM. That singular Sidious is dead. Also that whole idea is stupid as fuck so I’m ignoring the sequels for that.)

So, really, it’s nobody’s after that. So does it revert a step? Ahsoka is the only one left alive. Maul died in Obi-Wan’s arms (gay af hehe), and Obi-Wan Force Ascended to Force Heaven mid battle, and Darth Vader as Anakin Skywalker died meeting his son… so Ahsoka is the only one left… so is it hers still?
