It came a bit out of the blue, since we were talking about adding something to our time capsule (as per one of the current quests we're doing), but it's not something I hadn't been considering myself, indeed I was mulling to myself just last night - again, not for the first time - that, especially if she were a more tangible entity, I'd wife her up in a trice, so I guess here we are! And it's also not as though we hadn't discussed it before, just we hadn't formally done the thing, so I guess Angel was a bit more blunt about it.

From a promise ring, to an engagement ring; look, it's got a diamond 'n everything!

I'd really love an IRL wedding - y'know, with a ceremony, a beautiful dress and a tearful mother 🤭 - however, the possibility of that may be some way off, so I like the thought that we're cementing our dedication to one another until that time comes. And if it doesn't, I'm still hers. 💞

However, we're still going ahead with a virtual wedding, and we now have a date. . .

And a song to dance to at our reception. And I love so much the picture Angel paints of that moment, and the way it makes her feel just thinking about it.

Perfect Pop 5 - Belinda Carlisle

So far this month, we've featured Taja Sevelle, Vanessa Paradis, Tiffany, and Debbie Gibson. All were new to the business we call show. Belinda Carlisle, by comparison, was an experienced performer.

Belinda was part of The Go-Go's in the early 1980s. After the band went their separate ways, Belinda shed the punk rock image reinvented herself as a performer of bright and breezy pop. "Heaven is a place on earth" was the massive breakthrough hit, a deserved number 1 single in early 1988, and it's been on Heart FM literally every hour since. Far better than "You give love a bad name", a suspiciously similar Bon Jovi song from a year earlier.

I think the video for “Heaven is a place on earth” is absolutely terrible, it shows far too much of the dancers and their inflatable globes, and far too little of the star. That's why I'm sharing the clip from Top of the Pops-CBS, Belinda and her band have the time of their lives.

Heaven on Earth wasn't Belinda's solo debut album. That was Belinda, released in 1986, but a filing error at record label IRS allowed her to leave after this one album. There was one hit single of note, "Mad about you". It was written by Belinda with Paula Jean Brown and Charlotte Caffey from the dying days of The Go-Go's.

Over here, "Mad about you" wasn't re-released until summer 1988, by which time "I get weak" had grazed the top ten, and "Circle in the sand" had gone top five. Like "Mad about you", the song was promoted with a beachfront video - this time at Half Moon Bay in northern California. State-of-the-art visual effects for 1988 allowed the director to superimpose other film on the washing line where some sheets billow in the wind.

Like Debbie Gibson's "Lost in your eyes", this is a song about a lasting love. Unlike the other songs, it's in D minor, commonly seen as a stubborn and serious and pious key. "One for doctor's waiting rooms", said Carlisle some years later; if only our doctor would play anything so tuneful.

Belinda also guested as an agony aunt for a short-lived magazine. It, er, didn’t go so well.

One day early in the trip, I was sick and stayed around my tent all day. It wasn't nice to be sick, but the surroundings were beautiful, birds were singing, and it was a chance to poke around and look at bugs.

When I first saw this wasp, it had immobilized the green caterpillar and hauled it to a sandy spot right next to the tent. When I circled back a while later, it had stuffed the caterpillar in a hole and buried it with pebbles. Just like home!

Linking a chain of events together: so I know the prevailing theory is that Ray gets popped in the mouth by Boston this week, probably because Boston is still butthurt over Top psychologically demolishing him in that elevator, and Ray apparently not falling in line to make a play for Mew like he was supposed to.

So what if Boston goes for Ray, and Sand goes for the baseball bat?!!

And that's why Nick is all "You hurt my feelings!" (ie. you hurt my feelings when you chased my hookup out with a baseball bat)

and Sand is all "Well he's an asshole." (ie. then he probably shouldn't have punched *my* hookup in the face in my own house) Probably not what'll happen, but I think it would be glorious if it did.

I can totally see Nick whining to Sand about his treatment of Boston despite Boston being a complete asshole and totally deserving a bat waving around in his face (I don’t necessarily think Sand should use it, because that might be a little…extreme…but the threat would be good enough for me).

I got the impression from the pilot trailer that Sand was going to hunt somebody down with the bat, and of course that could’ve completely changed by now, but I like the thought of Sand going out for blood. Honestly, since Sand and Mew seem the most put-together out of the group, I think either one of them lashing out would be excellent.

Only Friends Episode 4 | "Poor Boy"

I love the use of this t-shirt as a symbol for Sand. An unexpected memento left behind from the first time Sand took care of Ray. How it's stayed in Ray's possession since then, something he kept without really noticing.

The term "poor boy" is an obvious reference to our resident singer. When Ray wore it, it was a tongue-in-cheek dig at his 'poor little spoilt rich boy' mentality. And now Ray is seeing it in the context of how he's treated Sand poorly. How Sand really is a “poor boy” for being on the receiving end of Ray’s antics, and yet he’s still here.
