#cinderbrush one-shot

Nine things I noted about CR2E95 “Blessing In Disguise” and the Talks Machina about it :
Me : "hey ? I know that guy in the NordVPN ad !" Turns out, yeah, Matthew Lilard played in a lot of stuff ! Including the movie Hacker, which I have not seen, but I guessed that's the reference they... referenced.
I immensely like the way Matt plays Artagan
"Nothing happens for a reason, it's absolute fucking chaos." oh no I love him
Genevieve is a lovely name, but I love that Jester chose her own name and her mom accepted it.
Sam made a joke abour ROUSs (Rodents Of Unusual Size) and I love him for it. (watch The Princess Bride, y'all)
Oh no, Caduceus's family !
Talks Machina : Pure Valentine's Day Sex Edition (it's just Matt and Brian wearing red robes) (later Brian describes himself as "the man you avoid at the orgy because it is defitely his first time" and ACCURATE)
CritRoleStats give Matt an existential crisis live by revealing he has more than 1000 NPC already this campaign.
Matt gives Brian an existential crisis live by revealing Taliesin may very well be Merlin.
I also watched the one-shot "Cinderbrush : A Monsterhearts Story" : EVERYONE LOOKED SO COOL AND HOT AND BEAUTIFUL. Taliesin is winning gender. Ally has such a cool energy, I don't know them but I liked them immeditaley. Ashley and Erika had me sweating. Matt played a lot of NPC, one of which was the professor, and he had litterally a projector. We stan ! The atmosphere was the best thing about this one-shot ; like, I did not go in high school in the US but I felt like I did just watching this. The rythm was very good until the end of the party and the murder of poor Amanda. After, it was a little wonky, they spend a little time trying to find clues and ways to get to the bottom of the story and split into different groups whereas it was not necessary maybe, and the system - according to my very little understanding of this playing system - doesn't have a 'battle time' mechanic like in D&D so the end was lacking a bit of epic. Shout to Erika Ishii for being down to seduce anyone, including a cop ("How old are you ?" "Old enough." Erika, please Ma'am). She's just gone from CR3 but I miss her so much already. Overall, a very good one-shot, let me reitterate that everyone was very awkward and very queer and very horny, just a perfect mix !

Randomly rewatching ‘Cinderbrush’ and remembering that time that Critical Role managed to make the most CW show to ever be a CW show:
Teen angst as played by 30-40-year-olds, giving the whole thing a weird nostalgic flavor
Witty one-liners that teens only wish that they could come up with on their own
The most shocking amount of gender one can pack onto a screen (that may be less of a CW thing, and more of what everyone wanted from the CW but never got, because the CW only ever wanted to appeal to The Youths in the most safe and boardroom-approved way possible).
Anyway, all this is to say: man I adore this one-shot way more than I expected to, and I still wish it would get a follow-up at some point.  The cast was great, the setup was fantastic, and Critical Role doing a supernatural teen drama complete with raves, murder investigations, and every iteration of hookup possible was such a fun departure from their usual games.  If you haven’t seen it and it sounds like something you’d dig, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Last month at the wiki — December 2023
Every month, we highlight significant work done in the previous month by our editing community at Encyclopedia Exandria. As we move into 2024, we take a second-to-last look at 2023—and it's a long one, folks. We'll take a look at 2023 as a whole year on Monday!
As always, to start, here's a selection of ten articles created in December. You can find more of our newest articles at the 50 newest pages report.
Circle of Tide & Bone, circle of Candela Obscura investigators
Potion of climbing, grants a climbing speed
Dancing sword, magical weapon that attacks on its own
The Glorious Ones, adventuring party in Athova-Rae
Calloway hideaway, hideout in Bassuras
Janet Varney, voice actor of Vilya in The Legend of Vox Machina
Ruidium armor, armor enchanced with ruidium
Wild's guide, tobacco-like plant
Scuttling serpentmaw, crab-like aberrations
Gibbering mouther, aberrations formed of the mouths and eyes of victims
December saw a lot of article creation in themed groups! The rival adventuring party in Call of the Netherdeep—Ayo Jabe, Dermot Wurder, Galsariad Ardyth, Irvan Wastewalker, and Maggie Keeneyes—all now have articles. We're also starting some forays into subpages dedicated to stat changes over time. We've been mulling that project over for some time, and with the sunsetting of @critrolestats, we've been thinking about it again. Alongside the new pages for the rivals, we've also got some tier subpages: Ayo's tiers for an example.
In other theme article creations, our Midst coverage has expanded! Following the three protagonists earlier in the year and Tzila in November, the major secondary characters now have articles: Saskia Del Norma, Jonas Spahr, Sherman Guthrie, and Imelda Goldfinch. There's also a dedicated article to all things geography and cosmology, Midst locations.
There was also a one-shot drive over the channel's winter break to write plot summaries for one-shots that are lacking them. Through this, we've got some new editors contributing plot summaries to "Cinderbrush: A Monsterhearts Story", "Crash Pandas: Too Trashed, Too Curious", and "DOOM Eternal One-Shot". You can check out details about the push at our post here on Tumblr. If you ever want to contribute a plot summary yourself, or any other content updates or edits of any other type, we encourage you! You can do so at any time.
If you've want to know what the Circle of Needle & Thread carries around, we've got updates completing those sections on each character's article. Check out Jean Basar for an example.
In backend stuff, all character articles finally have verified "Appearances and mentions" sections! Well over a year ago, character articles had these sections collated using a script from a list that used to live in the infoboxes and from episode "Featured character" sections. These lists were being slowly checked manually to ensure that they they were properly formatted, organized, and correct. They've finally all been verified!
Whew! A long-winded update, but it is the end of the year after all. Join us on Monday for our final look at 2023 where we look again not just at December but the year as whole.

you're spot on, so much of the hysteria on twitter seems to be fueled by people with agendas - 3pp who'll have to pay royalties, youtubers looking for engagement, indie developers etc
heck, i saw one youtuber tweet "let's put cr on blast and make them comment on this" which is incredibly stupid. even if they wanted to comment on the ogl (which they're not obligated to), they'll at least wait until the official version is out and not comment on a leaked document
and the thing is, that document is almost a month old. odds are there's already been some revisions based on feedback and negotiations with the big publishers, who knows. no one has the whole picture and everyone's just wildly speculating and accusing
Right like...obviously CR has a close working relationship with WoTC, and, frankly, might even be affected since the Tal'Dorei guides are under the OGL, but also, does that youtuber remember when Critical Role put out a not-dissimilar copyright statement and people similarly lost their shit? Or how whenever CR plays a non-D&D game for a one-shot the indie crowd screams that they're doing it wrong (*cough* Monsterhearts)? It's just so obviously people who either already hate D&D and yet hang on to its every word waiting for reasons to tell people to switch, which I have never seen work and I've been in these online spaces for 4+ years now;
For what it's worth: I actually have rarely seen this kind of fuckery from indie developers though I'm sure it exists. It's usually just random fans (see again Monsterhearts; the creator said she thought Cinderbrush was great; it was fans of the game/haters of CR making all the noise).
Like, I make fun of indie games from time to time but actually, TAZ: Steeplechase has made me interested in checking out Blades in the Dark for a one-shot or something, which a lot of screeching idiots have repeatedly failed to do, because TAZ: Steeplechase is like "hey we are using this system and it's fun as hell for the story we're trying to do here!" instead of saying "D&D is evil and everyone will be leaving it now! just like we said when One D&D came out or when Hasbro said it wasn't profitable enough or when discussions in 2020 touched upon some of the racially charged language surrounding certain character races or or or...ANYWAY PLAY MY FAVORITE GAME."
Also I do want to note that I'm barely exaggerating about the alternatives people offer. I've seen some dude touting Rolemaster, which is literally out of print. Or like, after A Court of Fey and Flowers, someone brought up Good Society and seriously overstated how it was used in that game (it was significantly hacked, and also they were still very much playing D&D 90% of the time) and did not actually cover that if you want to cast spells, Good Society will not help you. It's just...I actually very much agree that we should encourage the use of alternatives to D&D! I think it's good to have a thriving independent game culture! It's just...why is everyone's response to shit on D&D, which is not perfect, but is immensely popular for many good reasons, instead of putting that effort into making their favorite indie game more accessible and appealing to new players. What kind of idiot says "the correct way to convince people to change is to tell them that the thing they love is dumb and bad, and offer an alternative without understanding what other people are looking for."

I loved the vibe of the Cinderbrush one shot so much I made this after watching for the first time(about a year now.)
Plus with feeling the Halloween spirit recently I went back and did more editing to the music. Hope you guys enjoy! (I also made playlists for each of the main characters on my channel too, give them a listen!)

Ten characters, ten fandoms, ten tags
Thank you @saxifrage-wreath for the tag! I've had to think a bit to come up with ten characters but here they are, in no particular order:
Galadriel (LOTR)
Sophie Hatter (Howl's Moving Castle)
Kili (The Hobbit trilogy by Peter Jackson)
Rankstrail (The Last Orc)
Caleb Widogast (Critical Role)
Zevran (Dragon Age, and I would've liked to put Morrigan, Leliana, Velanna and Sigrun here, but alas. It's one character per fandom)
Clayton Sharpe (UnDeadwood one-shot by Critical Role)
George (The Famous Five)
Jamie (Cinderbrush one-shot by Critical Role)
Lucy Pevensie (The Chronicles of Narnia)
I can safely say that every character from this list makes me go :D :D :D It's an interesting compilation for sure. I feel like a magpie holding up shiny stuff it found on the street XD XD XD
I'm gonna go ahead and tag @yukichouji @nai-nty-8 @alguiensinconcretar @siriskulksnerding @oxygenforthewicked @the-iron-lion @icylook @wild-houseplant @bumblerhizal and @praise-the-lord-im-dead if this is something that looks fun to you ^^

Masterpost
Chronicling what I have and haven't watched so far, partly to keep track of things myself and partly to do my best to curb spoilers (not that I'm that great at avoiding them myself). Will update as I go along.
Watched:
All of Campaign 1
VM-related One-Shots: Grog's One-Shot, The Search For Grog, The Search For Bob, Dalen's Closet, The Adventures Of The Darlington Brigade
All of Campaign 2
MN-related One-Shots: The Mighty Nein Reunited (Parts 1&2), Echoes Of The Solstice
Most Battle Royales up to VM vs M9 (don't care much about spoilers on those I haven't watched though)
Other One-Shots: Liam's Quest, The Return of Liam, Liam's Quest: Full Circle, Thursday by Night 1 & 2, The Song of the Lorelei, Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Crystal Palace, Cinderbrush: A Monsterhearts Story, Night Before Critmas
Exandria Unlimited: Calamity
The Legend Of Vox Machina
Exandria Unlimited
Exandria Unlimited: Kymal
Candela Obscura Chapter 1 - 3
Honey Heist 1
A Familiar Problem
All of Narrative Telephone
Watching:
Campaign 3
Candela Obscura Chapter 4
I usually watch new episodes on Friday or Saturday, depending on what time I have. No spoilers earlier than that please, but once you see me posting about it, feel free to jump in.
I tag new episodes with #cr spoilers for a week after the initial broadcast and #c3eXX with specific episode numbers for longer than that. Older stuff is tagged with the campaign’s party name/the party the character(s) in the post belongs to, which overlap sometimes.

Honey Heist (all 3), Cinderbrush, Dalen's Closet and Ashley's one shot are the best!! Liam's first one shot and Song of Lorelei are really good too. But nothing is better than C2 so i would definitely watch that first. If i can make another suggestion, when i was catching up to VM, i saved the one shots to watch when i needed a bit of a break from the main campaign.
amazing!!! i greatly appreciate this advice and will keep it in mind. i think what i'll do is watch search for grog and bob + dalen's closet and then ExU, maybe the honey heists and ashley's one-shot at this point but no promises. I SIMPLY CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG TO WATCH C2

cleric: what is your favorite battle goblin: who is your favorite non-main campaign character
Cleric: what is your favorite battle
Oh man... There are so many good options but I think I'm gonna have to give it to the Otohan fight in ep 33. That fight was so tense and so pivotal for BH.
There's also something about watching live that ups the stakes of combat so much. There are some really fucking cool battles in c2 and tlovm, but because c3 is the only campaign I'm watching live it's the only one where anything could happen and anyone could die and that adds such an extra layer to c3 combat for me.
Goblin: who is your favorite non-main campaign character
Af Flowers from Cinderbrush my absolute beloved!!! Cinderbrush in general is such a good one-shot and I love Af so much. Awkward nb werewolf is like... the most made-for-me character of all time, and Ally Beardsley is so fucking funny and endearing. I haven't watched them in anything else but if anyone has a rec for a d20 campaign where Ally plays a character similar to Af I'm gonna have to check it out bc I loved Af so much.
(Ask me more Critical Role questions!)

If you're going to watch one I would encourage you to watch this one. Not only does Taliesin do an incredible job but so does the cast. Everyone is perfect and meshes really well. Even the crew went all out, the set looks spectacular and the cast even gets to roleplay with real items! Their outfits as well make it all so immersive. It'll vastly depend on your individual opinion/what you like but these are the ones that I really enjoyed, rewatch, and think are really well done.
On another note, while I didn't watch it or like the idea myself, it should be mentioned that the Wendy's Oneshot has been taken down. There were actually quite a few funny jokes + Sam and Ify's chaotic puns. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1C5PVXeeT8&t=9s

4, 14, 20 for the CR ask meme?
4. Minor character you are (correctly) obsessed with.
planerider ryn <3 shes my wife, my dearest, my favorite minor character, and the best npc matt has ever created. she's never shown up in the flesh (also halas, hes fascinating) (also purvaan suul)
14. Describe the art you would most like to create or commission if talent/money were no object.
ooh. maybe like, a fully animated chetney werewolf transformation? or like. a whole bunch of character designs for the gorgynei. i have no idea really
20. What non-D&D TTRPG would you most like to see Critical Role run a one shot in?
tbh i am not well versed in non-d&d ttrpgs. i thought the system they used in cinderbrush was really cool so it would be cool to see that again maybe?
