Ok yeah sure mushrooms are cool and are the most obviously visible and charismatic and such when looking for/at fungi but like pls there are so many more types of little fungal guys you can look at other than mushrooms that are just as cool if not cooler.
I just wanna talk about chytrids more without having to give people an initial long conversation about what they even are
(They are microscopic aquatic fungi and they are important in certain ecosystems for nutrient cycling between lower trophic levels and they are beautiful and I love them so much and like the amount of people in the world that actually professionally study them is so few and it’s sad 😞)

Divisions of fungi but Old Gods, worldbuilding/concept sketches for my new dnd character(s)! Descriptions by littlest brother (not pictured). Ive loved getting to review mycology stuff, I really wished my brain was in a better place while I took it and I really craved something more specific than just ‘circle of spores’ philosophy. since I’m looking into the evolution of fungi for research I finally decided to do my own thing.
Gotta mention the Kill 6 Billion Demons webcomic which is beautiful and heavily inspired me.

Chiriqui Harlequin Frog
Atelopus chiriquiensis
Tumblr media
The Chiriqui harlequin frog was found along mountain streams and rivers in Costa Rica and western Panama.
The species was once considered common and is suspected to have been driven to extinction by chytrid fungus like so many other South American frogs. Introduced fish and habitat loss may have also contributed to its decline.
The species was assessed as extinct in 2019.

I HAVE A IDEA FOR A SPLATBAND INFECTION AU
ok so basically this is based off a real life virus that cephalopods can get (in this au tho it spreads to other species in ways I'll get to later)
So first this virus in real life is caused by Labyrinthulomycetes (formerly classed as fungi) and some organisms that are classed as fungi, if I remember correctly this is referred to as a thraustochytrid infection (correct me if I'm wrong) so anyway I read about it and it's main effects and decided to turn it into a infection au so here is the main lore about this au (Infection stages coming soon I promise)
Also I decided to name this au Chytrid virus soo ENJOY!!!!
So first this virus begins in Anarchy Bay when local fishermen begin to notice how the salmonids are more irratic in movement and grizzco workers begin to notice more glowflies
Tumblr media
Nobody thinks anything of it (this is right after a big run and normally after a big run there are still some irratic salmonids) until again, fishermen and grizzco workers notice that this time, the salmonids have flaky skin, like, really flaky skin.
The Splatland ocean control decide to investigate the matter, telling grizzco to not let any workers go in the salmonid swim zone until it is deemed safe, after catching a salmonid and taking it to a lab to investigate, SOC (splatland ocean control) find out that the salmonid has a unknown type of virus, it's skin feels extremely flaky to the touch and kinda powdery too.
One of the SOC scientists feel sick after the investigation and decides to stay home tommorow, thinking it's just a cold from outside. They stay at home and in the meantime, and feel a jitter in their arms, it's only small but kinda annoying. Anyway next day they come into work but can't seem to hold their equipment correctly, their arms keep jittering in a uncontrollable way (not massive jitters but ones small but still enough to be really annoying)
After some time, the SOC scientist began to have coughing fits that would go from small to massive, which alerts other colleagues.
After they run some tests on the guy, it turns out he got this virus from the salmonid, since he was the one conducting the experiment.
Now everybody's panicked because this guy went outside and probably infected others with this unknown disease, so now the guy is isolated amd in the meantime SOC tells SNH (Splatland national healthcare) to be on the look out for this virus.
Anyway I don't wanna reveal anymore of the story bc then it would be spoilers BUT YEAHH!!!

Thinking about Batman and white nose syndrome.
White nose syndrome is a fungal infection that DECIMATES bat populations. It'll infect a cave of little brown bats (Myotis Lucifugus) and 90% of them will just. Not wake up from hibernation. It's decimating bat populations on the East Coast.
Now imagine it reaches Batman's cave.
His bats are dying.
His bats are dying and he can't save them.
Scientists still don't have effective treatments. There are a few experimental preventative treatments, but those don't save infected bats. Batman can't save the bats in his cave.
Bruce Wayne funnels millions into bat science, and the bats in his cave are alive, but most of them won't make it through winter.
White nose syndrome causes bats to wake up frequently from their hibernation torpor. This uses energy, and so does the process of fighting the disease.
So Bruce's bats go to sleep, and hundreds of them won't wake up. And the money he's spending, it won't save them in time. He can see the white fungus growing on their snouts. They're going to die.
Jason asks, "why is the cave full of moths?"
And Bruce tells him, "sometimes bats wake up early because they're starving to death, but they can't find bugs to eat. They will have bugs here."
Tim asks, "why do we decontaminate before entering and exiting the cave these days?"
And Bruce tells him, "we can't infect this cave with new strains. We can't risk infecting other caves."
Damian asks, "how do we save them?"
Bruce tells him, "we can't save them. Not all of them. This is my fault, I should have funded the research sooner. I should have known."
Dick doesn't ask any questions. He knows Bruce the best. He knows what this is doing to him.
Almost all the bats die. Bruce blames himself.
And before the next winter, his scientists discover the cure.

UC Santa Barbara Researchers Inoculate California Red-Legged Frogs Against Chytrid in Experimental Treatment
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara have been conducting experiments into inoculating California red-legged frogs (Rana draytonii) against Chytrid fungal infections. Utilizing controlled exposure to Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in the lab environment the researchers monitored if the frogs were successfully able to clear the infection. The frogs were then treated with antifungals, released into native habitat, and monitored. Though the results were inconclusive regarding immunity it does have implications for population level considerations, as different populations of frogs may have different immunity levels to fungal infection. Chytrid fungus can be deadly to amphibians and are a major consideration for biologists when reintroduction efforts are planned. [Photo credit: National Park Service/Kirke Wrench]

It wouldn't surprise me if you turned out to be a crazy lab scientist at this point.
Hmm, maybe it'd be a nice Halloween costume.
Or maybe you wouldn't even need it.
I used to work in a lab on campus. I worked with cancer cells to train them to absorb and replicate compounds introduced to the agar. We also had a vial of smallpox in the refrigerator. every day I think about the potential super disease I could’ve made if I were slightly more evil

Bad Newts: Amphibians are in Serious Trouble
My colleagues and I have just had a paper published in Nature, based on our efforts to assess almost all amphibian species for the IUCN Red Lists. The major takeaway messages:
It is a bad time to be an amphibian
Two fifths of all amphibians are threatened with extinction.
Salamanders are the most threatened group; three fifths of all salamanders are threatened with extinction!
Climate change is a major driver of amphibian declines globally
Habitat loss, especially due to agriculture, is a problem for the vast majority of amphibians
Chytrid pandemics have caused and continue to cause catastrophic declines of both salamanders and frogs
Protected areas and careful management are working as strategies! They are actively improving the outlook of some species
As many as 222 amphibian species may have gone extinct in recent times; of those, 185 are suspected extinct but not yet confirmed.
Our paper is Open Access, you can read it here!

Forgot to post this here's chytrid au raian
Tumblr media
Explanation: In the chytrid virus au, octopus are more vulnerable to the virus, also a infected as more time goes on will get more hostile and will slowly start to lose all sense of self, a infected will go from slightly scratching a itchy spot on their arm to ripping the flesh and skin away from that arm. They also claw at other stuff too like their tentacles and clothing, and also other non infected.
I don't wanna spoil everything, so for now here's abit of new lore about TCV! (The initial post I made explaning the virus is now non Canon, don't use that for references as there is new lore and stuff)
