If this story makes me smile when I think of Jerry O’Malley and Ed Payne, as I knew them personally growing up with their daughters, was a frequent guest at their homes .
As told by Paul F Crickmore in his book Lockheed SR-71 Operations in the Far East, having deployed ‘976’ to Kadena air base, on the Japanese island of Okinawa, 11 days earlier, Maj Jerry O’Malley and Capt Ed Payne duly flew the same aircraft on the Senior Crown (codename for the SR-71 programme) operational debut. They coasted in on a heading of 284 degrees at 78,000 ft (23,774 m) and Mach 3.17, passing over Haiphong. In just 12 minutes they had overflown Hanoi – then the most highly defended city on earth – with impunity, the jet’s sensors recording dozens of high-value targets, before exiting hostile airspace in the vicinity of Dien Bien Phu. Decelerating and descending over Thailand, the crew rendezvoused with several KC-135Q tankers and took on 80,000 lbs of JP-7 from two of them. With fuel in the tanks, Maj O’Malley quickly reached the SR-71’s optimum speed and altitude and headed back over North Vietnam, before plotting a course for ‘home-plate’ – Kadena air base, on Okinawa.
On contact with Kadena, Approach Control, they were dismayed to find that the base was completely ‘fogged in’. The pilot talked to the tower controller and then to Col Charlie Minter, who agreed to allow them to attempt a low visibility approach for a visual landing.
O’Malley never saw the runway, and pushed the throttles forward to go back ‘upstairs’ to contemplate further options. Low on fuel, he called for the standby tanker that had been launched earlier just in case the weather at Kadena turned nasty. After link-up, he took on 25,000 lbs of fuel, while Payne copied a two-figure encoded number that told them the location of their divert airfield — Ku Kuan, on the island of Taiwan.
Two additional KC-135s were launched to accompany ‘976’ to Nationalist China, the SR-71 adopting a tanker call sign as the number `two’ aircraft in a three-ship formation. This deception was undertaken to hide the inter-island diversion from SlGINT monitors on the Chinese mainland. As they made their way `low and slow’ with the tankers, the destination airfield’s non-directional beacon returned. As they made their way `low and slow’ with the tankers, the destination airfield’s non-directional beacon returned the unexpected Morse Code identity signal of CCK. The tanker crew soon resolved this problem, however.
It turned out that Ku Kuan had recently been re-named Ching Chuan Kang!
O’Malley asked the CCK tower for permission to land, and made a straight-in visual approach at 175 knots, before performing a smooth touch-down. After clearing the runway and lining up behind the lead tanker, he sandwiched ‘976’ between two KC-135s as they taxied in. This unusual sight caused considerable confusion in the tower, particularly when one controller asked for the call-sign of ‘the little black aircraft between the two tankers, which had replied with a tanker call sign’. While Payne was talking to the tower people, O’Malley dialled up the radio frequency of the SAC Command Post that had recently opened on CCK. He asked for the aircraft to be ‘hangared’ (for security. A crowd of at least 500 Taiwanese gathered 15-deep along a 300-yard section of the fence, all of whom were fascinated to see such a futuristic jet standing on their airfield almost within touching distance. *Note years later, when General O’Malley was a PACAF Commander he found out that SR 71 pilot David Peters was having trouble finding a hangar for his SR 71. O’Malley made a phone call minutes later a hangar became available for Lt.Col Peters. I’m sure he was remembering this moment when he needed a hangar.. second and third photograph are of O’Malley and Payne. The last one is a Charles Minter.

tw// mentions of Suicide, sexism, racism and transphobia//
How people would most likely mis-interpret my OCs if they were canon in Metalocalypse.
Misery - Needs to be with Nathan since she was the token girl that associated with the band before Abigail came along due to being their bodyguard. (Most likely would be pitted against Abigail even though Misery was never romantically interested in Nathan)
Is the stoic, angry, strong lady stereotype because she's muscular. (Even though she's shown to get emotional and be interested in things that may not be considered brutal, she's also pretty chill once you get to know her)
She was selfish for secluding herself from the boys in AOTD and suicide-baited Nathan (even though she was mentally unstable and went through with it and didn't die because Payne rushed her to the hospital)
Is a two-faced liar that does nothing but deny any responsibility and uses her trauma as a scapegoat. (Because she lied to the boys about joining the Revengeancers in Doomstar Requiem and hid the fact that she was secretly investigating the Revengeancers and apologized for using that as leverage to hurt Nathan because she was upset that he didn't take her seriously in Season 4 and she even helped defend the boys in the fight against the Revengeancers before leaving)
There would be also the type of people that would be mad that she's not sexy enough for them. (because she has muscles)
Would also be mad that she's less tolerant of the boys' shenanigans than Charles and would call her a hypocrite because she acts similarly to them in some situations (not everyone's smart all the time let her go crazy pls)
Soo - Would either be considered to be nothing but a Trindle 2.0 or an UWU baby that needs to be protected.
Since she's a pacifist she would immediately be considered a damsel in distress since she never fights (even though she has demonstrated she can defend herself)
People would think that Hun is in the right for being overprotective of her since she can't do anything herself (even though Soo is capable of many talents such as acupuncture and aerial dancing and Soo wants Hun to stop babying her)
People would think she's annoying because she wants Hun to talk to her about his problems (even though Hun holds on to the sexist ideology that was taught to him that men don't talk about their feelings even though he has PTSD from the military and witnessed their parents being beheaded by the Yakuza)
They would also consider her a Trindle 2.0 considering she fell in love with and was clingy with Nathan when they first met and he didn't like it (even though she was sad but okay with him not feeling the same when he finally pulled her aside and told her he doesn't see her like that, unlike Trindle who literally tried to kamikaze him when he broke up with her)
Because she's a trickster, a little bit rambunctious and rebellious to her brother's antics and is "weird" but not aggressive or submissive like most Asian women stereotypes are, she's unlikable and confusing (even though she's felt grief over not understanding social cues or people not liking her because she doesn't fit into the traditional wife quota that her mother tried to force on her when she planned to have her married off when she was older)
They would also mock her for having a crush on a celeb that's no longer alive and was much older than her when he was alive (even though Skwisgaar can f**k every grandma in the district and no one would bat an eye, also people that are interested in Marilyn, E*vis, John L*nnon and Audrey Hepburn still exist)
Would be infantilized because she acts silly and wacky so that must equate to her having the mindset of a child (even though as stated above she hates being babied)
Just because she's not sad, negative or depressed and is a positive ray of sunshine and because she's short, they'd also keep presenting her as if she's a kid (even though she's canonically 29)
Hun - People would say "he's so sigma male" or some bs like that and agree with his beliefs just because they were raised on the same sexist ideology that men are taught by their folks.
People would say he was in the right of being overprotective of Soo because they think she's too childish (even though it's literally enforcing the sexist "brother has to act like the dad" stereotype that women must be protected at all costs because she is delicate and fragile even though Soo hates being babied by him)
He would also not be criticized as much by the fandom as much because of him being a man due to men getting away with doing heinous s**t in the show all the time (but if a woman does the same she's persecuted and deserves to be burned at the stake)
They would think that just because Hun is a military veteran, doesn't show emotion outside of anger or frustration, that trains fighters kung fu and doesn't throw himself at women, that he's "Sigma" and the perfect man (even though the whole point of Hun's character is to highlight the sexist ideology that men grow up with while Soo is a representation of sexist ideology that women are forced to grow up with)
Hun wouldn't be criticized of being so hard on Misery because they wouldn't feel that she fits "traditional woman" standards and because she's not complicit with Hun's behavior and his ridiculous standards, therefore making her a bitch. (It wouldn't be until Hun starts criticizing the boys that people would see he's a POS)
It wouldn't be until Hun starts realizing that he's not healthy and that he's properly diagnosed with PTSD and learning how to deal with his emotions properly that people would start turning on him, complaining that they "ruined" him and turned him into a wimp just because he showed a little emotion. (this is the same type of ideology that men grow up with that is taught to them to make them hide their emotions and grow up angry and hateful)
Tommy - Kind of a mixed bag, some people would think he's annoying and others would think he's a twink we must woobify.
People would either love him for messing with Nathan and because he's Scottish or hate him for being such a dick to him (there's no in between)
There would be those that would complain about him being trans, saying he's not a real man but f**k them.
Would be the type to have DA weebs say "he's so mean spirited!" as if this isn't a show about men being dicks to each other.
They'd probably complain about him being too "bitchy" or whiny because he shows his emotions. (which literally fits in with the whole sexist rhetoric about men not being able to show emotion and calling him bitchy is usually a term used to refer to someone calling a man a woman, literal transphobia)
Like Toki and Soo, would probably fall victim to woobification, he's just a little baby with daddy issues lay off! (even though he hates being treated like a baby because it makes him feel like what he was before transitioning when he was younger and his brothers would pick on him)
Trinity - Would most likely be hated for being too mean.
People would give her s**t for not being patient with the boys or Nathan's ignorance for that matter. (even though upon first meeting Nathan literally thought of her people through racist inaccurate documentaries that sugarcoat the suffering of Native Americans and just portray them as savages)
People would also be upset that she's not submissive either (no s**t I'm sick of Native women always having to be the shy, timid, submissive stereotype, let them be mean for once)
They would also be angry at her for not immediately falling for Toki and would accuse her of leading him on or playing with his emotions (first of all he's not entitled to her, she's not an object, second of all she was scared of being hurt by romance again and leaving her comfort zone and she ends up with him at the end of AOTD so shut up)
Payne - People would complain about her just for existing, saying she's unnecessary and didn't do anything impactful (she literally tried to help the boys bring out their emotions and remember, was patient with Nathan despite him obviously not getting along with her due to her replacing Misery as their bodyguard when she went missing, and literally rushed Misery to the hospital when she tried to kill herself in AOTD, thus saving her life)
Would be criticized for trying to push Nathan to let his feelings out despite his objections, classifying her as pushy and a bitch (Nathan bottling up his emotions wasn't healthy and Payne saw that and was trying to help him through his struggles, sorry she wanted to be a good friend to him)
They'd probably criticize her as being too ordinary and mary sue-ish (wow someone who doesn't have a depressing backstory that is associated with the boys for once! that must mean she has everything easy and has no struggles at all! she literally suffers from a lack of self importance and being too generous, always putting others before herself)
Would also be criticized for not looking sexy enough due to her muscles (leave muscular women alone)
Would say she's equivalent to a doormat due to her lack of self importance (even though she's shown to be assertive when being patient with the boys' behavior, having grown up in a big Samoan family helped her tolerance)
Probably be criticized for being too motherly which is obviously a representation of sexism (so just because she wants to help the boys work through their trauma and issues that equates to her being a mother rather than a good friend? there would be some substance to that statement if it was just Payne in the show, but since we had Misery, Soo, Trinity, Lavona, Abigail and even Trindle and Rebecca that kind of fizzles out, if this was a trait that plagued every woman then it would also have some substance but it doesn't)

Maureen O'Hara (born Maureen FitzSimons; 17 August 1920 – 24 October 2015) was an Irish actress and singer. She was a famous redhead who was known for playing passionate but sensible heroines, often in westerns and adventure films. On numerous occasions, she worked with director John Ford and longtime friend John Wayne.
O'Hara grew up in Dublin in a Catholic family and aspired to become an actress from a very young age. She trained with the Rathmines Theatre Company from the age of 10 and at the Abbey Theatre from the age of 14. She was given a screen test, which was deemed unsatisfactory, but Charles Laughton saw potential and arranged for her to co-star with him in Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn in 1939. She moved to Hollywood the same year to appear with him in the production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and was given a contract by RKO Pictures. From there, she went on to enjoy a long and highly successful career, and acquired the nickname "The Queen of Technicolor".
She appeared in films such as How Green Was My Valley (1941) (her first collaboration with John Ford), The Black Swan with Tyrone Power (1942), The Spanish Main (1945), Sinbad the Sailor (1947), the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947) with John Payne and Natalie Wood, and Comanche Territory (1950). O'Hara made her first film with John Wayne, the actor with whom she is most closely associated, in Rio Grande (1950). This was followed by The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (1957), McLintock! (1963) and Big Jake (1971). Such was her strong chemistry with Wayne that many assumed they were married or in a relationship. In the 1960s O'Hara increasingly turned to more motherly roles as she aged, appearing in films such as The Deadly Companions (1961), The Parent Trap (1961) and The Rare Breed (1966). She retired from the industry in 1971 but returned 20 years later to appear with John Candy in Only the Lonely (1991).
In the late 1970s, O'Hara helped run her third husband Charles F. Blair Jr.'s flying business in Saint Croix in the United States Virgin Islands, and edited a magazine, but later sold them to spend more time in Glengarriff in Ireland. She was married three times, and had one daughter, Bronwyn with her second husband. Her autobiography, 'Tis Herself, was published in 2004 and became a New York Times Bestseller. In November 2014, she was presented with an Honorary Academy Award with the inscription "To Maureen O'Hara, one of Hollywood's brightest stars, whose inspiring performances glowed with passion, warmth and strength". In 2020, she was ranked number 1 on The Irish Times list of Ireland's greatest film actors.
In 2020, I barely met my 70-books Goodreads goal, because I mainly read on my daily commute to uni and due to the pandemic I haven't had to go there since March.
Furthermore, the German uni I’m currently attending is only a 10-minute walk from my house, so no time to read.
Since I’ll only have presence lectures one week a month when I finish my Erasmus stay, I’m not expecting to read a lot this year (besides mandatory readings for my courses), so my Goodreads goal is only 50 books.
In case you’re curious about what I read in 2020, here’s my Goodreads account :)

In my version of the funeral scene in Metalocalypse, where Nathan apologizes to Pickles and the band for being a s***ty person towards them, Nathan also apologizes to Misery (who wasn’t present) even though she wasn’t there to hear it.
He had been looking for her in the crowd at Cornickelson’s funeral before the speech but didn’t see her there.
Nathan still thought she would come back to the band and maybe show up at the funeral, but she didn’t, she wasn’t close to Roy like the boys and Charles were (since she appeared later in their careers) so it really wouldn’t make sense for her to go.
(Mind you this was before Dethklok found out she died)
Nathan had held on to hope that Misery would come back but no one could find her, not even Charles.
Nathan had already bumped up Payne’s (Misery’s friend) status from alternate bodyguard to full time, but he hadn’t clicked with Payne like he did with Misery.
It’s not that he didn’t like Payne she just wasn’t like Misery at all.
Payne had tried to get Nathan to talk about Misery to make him feel better about her disappearance (since she was there when Nathan and Misery’s huge argument happened) but he either pretended not to know who Payne was talking about or just brushed it off.
It wasn’t that he was glad Misery was gone, just like with Toki and Abigail, he was secretly trying to deal with the pain of knowing she was gone and presumably never coming back and when Nathan finally got confirmation that Misery was dead by footage sent from Magnus that was the final nail in the coffin.
In a way, Misery’s walkout after their argument was a step to him realizing that maybe he was in the wrong about the entire situation.
Misery had tried her best to support and stand by Nathan even though she knew he was wrong, and he gave nothing back, she was the only one besides Skwisgaar and Payne to put up with his bulls**t and he really just let go of her because he didn’t want to admit he was wrong.
Nathan absolutely deserved to fail after she left I’m sorry, and this is coming from a Nathan fan.
He was literally the reason she died, and now that she’s dead, now he cares, so f**k him.
