So I have two comfort characters at the moment. The first is Janet Coburn on ER. I can’t much explain my appeal to a recurring character but after S14, I was so curious about her life and wish we had gotten more so I started writing fanfics and gave her a whole world of family and friends who love her. (But I do kind of like to challenge and whump her too since ER never gave us that.)

My other one is Nic on The Resident. I just watched the episode where she died and the one after that, and it already feels like there’s a huge hole in the show. I can’t imagine it without her, and now I feel like every Conrad and Nic fic I write she has to be alive and it’s non-canon compliant. Plus the CoNic fandom is small and very inclusive and welcoming!

Possibly Doing a "Begins" Series

So, I've kind of been obsessing over 9-1-1/9-1-1: Lone Star lately and think that it would be cool to do a "Begins" Series with characters from One Chicago and maybe The Resident, by using the information that we have gotten from the shows about them (after I finish all my other WIPs, but I actually wanna have them written ahead of time instead of writing as I go). I have an idea of how I want some of them to go, others are undecided as of right now and some I'm debating if I should do one for said character. But if you want to see a particular moment for a character that was canonically mentioned (ie Mouch and his dad sending letters when he was a child) let me know. (Also, the order of the characters listed have nothing to do with the potential order that they get done. The Chicago Shows are in the order of my character charts and The Resident Characters are in the order that I pulled their names from fandom Wiki).

Nic lost her mother at 13 and had to raise her younger sister practically by herself, then we watched her support her sister through drug addiction and a kidney transplant and ended up losing her, she had a miscarriage, got arrested and spent a night in jail, saved her father from suicide, survived a stabbing and surgery while pregnant, broke up with Conrad twice.

But now that she was finally happy, married and had a baby, she dies?

No. I'll be grieving her loss for the rest of my life.

Second, who doesn’t love expectant parents Conrad and Nic? This is a gap filler fic from when Nic was pregnant with Gigi and gives them some downtime to appreciate their relationship and flirt a bit. And it features their dog Lacey, a “character” I made up because I feel like they’d have a dog too.

re: “Conrad deserves better than Nic” // the back half of season two

so I just binged the entire show and I came across the “Conrad deserves better than Nic” comment a couple of times and listen, I have some things to say about this

I think a lot of these comments started in the back half of season two and I agree that it wasn’t handled perfectly - I’m guessing because FOX ordered nine additional episodes after season two was already on air for about a month and they didn’t know what to do? - but I find it funny that people are undermining Nic’s struggles.

Sure, she might have some commitment issues in season 2, but to be fair, it is not like they are unfounded. Her first round with Conrad was kind off a shit show - he had anger issues and was very closed off so she never knew what he was feeling and after what happened at the 404 Travern, she broke it off. Remember, one of the reasons why is because “the way you handle things scares me”. She was scared of him. That’s not something you just overcome. It takes time. Now in present time, he wants her back, but he still doesn’t fully want to let her in - “Don’t do this, don’t shut me out”, when his dad returned; then in season 2 he does exactly that once again right after he had the nightmare; going up to baseball player although she asked him not to; then I feel like there was this underlying uncertainty about how close he was with Zoey and her family - Nic just doesn’t fully trust him yet although she wants to believe that it will be different this time, but trust needs to be earned. Again, that takes time. When he surprised her with the house, I can honestly fully understand why she wasn’t head over heels in love with the idea. First of all, maybe that’s something he should’ve talked to her about before instead of just expecting she absolutely wants to move in with him and second of all, how long have they been back together at that point? Two months? Three? Maybe four tops? That’s not a long time at all. I can see why that might be a bit pushy and Nic “freaked”. I’m sure the first few months were all love and butterflies the first time too, but then it went to shit anyway. Also, let’s not forget that she had a lot on her plate at that time re: Jessie. Nic just wasn’t in the right mindset to think about taking the next, maybe too early, step with her boyfriend. You know who had no problems and who could focus his entire energy on his relationship? Conrad. Nic just didn’t have the luxury. She had to juggle ten things all at once, including her relationship. But Conrad kept pushing. No, I wouldn’t necessarily call it emotional blackmail, but he essentially said “I feel like we’re standing still and you don’t wanna commit to our relationship. You don’t wanna move forward so I’m breaking things off” when all she asked from him was to give her some damn time. She went through a lot during these episodes. She always took care of everybody else in her life, but nobody took care of her. She had to do that herself and I think in a way, she is scared of letting somebody too close, because everybody always hurt her and let her down. Her father, her sister, Conrad the first time. And you know who built her up and who kept her going? She did that all by her damn self. Yes, Conrad seems to be a changed man, but there’s still this last ounce of doubt and I think Nic is actually hyper afraid of opening up and getting hurt again.

Regarding the deserving part - uhm? Nic is exactly the type of person he needs and wants. She makes him so happy. She inspires him. She’s the reason he finally got help. He loves her so damn much so please don’t talk to me about him deserving better, because I find that quite ridiculous.

Listen, I get it, I really do. The way Conrad fights for her makes my knees wobble as well, but that doesn’t mean she owns him anything or that her struggles are not important. Her live was in shambles and she just needed Conrad to be there for her, but instead he kept pushing for the next step which was the opposite of what she actually needed.

Overall, I just wish they would’ve framed certain aspects of their relationship a bit differently in season 2, because what a lot of viewers got seemed to be something like “Conrad can do no wrong and Nic just can’t make up her mind” which I don’t think was the case at all if you ask me.
