squealing about this boop function. I literally made a sound akin to a squeaky toy. it brings me much joy. the cat paws. the animation. oh. oh. joy. i've never felt such joy in my life. in the same vein,
cat fun facts! (cat pics at the end)
Cat whiskers are immensely sensitive, about as sensitive as human fingertips! Cats use their whiskers to feel things around them and their face. Cats can actually get a type of information overload, called whisker fatigue, from their whiskers touching too many things/being touched too often, which is why it is recommended to use wide, flatter feeding + water dishes for your cats, and to avoid touching their whiskers unnecessarily.
Cat Paws have 3 types of Beans (paw pads)! Digital, Metacarpal and Carpal pads. The metacarpal pad is located in the center of the paw, the digital pads are located upon their main four toes, and the carpal pad is located on the staff of the cat's paws/legs (often referred to as their thumbs!) They also have what is called a "dew claw", located on the inner side of the front paws (which is more like a thumb if you ask me.) Cats also usually have 18 toes, but many cats have more than just 18. (usually when dew claws are present on the back paws)
Cat Paw Pads are also absorbent of shock and sound, and can feel texture, pressure and temperature! It's important to make sure your fluffy friend's paw pads aren't overgrown with fur, as this can affect their grip and effectiveness. (Most cats can do this themselves via grooming, but some cats can't!)
Cat's Ears have 36 muscles in the outer ear! (while we humans only have 6). They can rotate up to a full 180 degrees, helping cats pinpoint the location of sounds. Cats can amplify sound waves between 2,000 and 6,000 hertz, and can hear sounds up to 62 kHz, which is 1.6 octaves above humans, and 1 octave above that of a dog. Cats are wonderful creatures! We're very lucky to have them as our companions. If you have a fluffy friend, give 'em a lil pat for me, for being such an amazing creature. And, as a treat, here are some of my fluffy friends. (1 and 2) The late Ms. Mojo Catface, (grey cat in 3,4,5,6) Mr. Spyro Needlepaw and (black cat in 3,5,7) Kitka Meowski, The Russian Queen of Day Drinking Vodka.

You know that face your cat makes sometimes when you say something they, obviously, don’t appreciate? It feels like you’re asking them to drive you to the airport…

You guys see this animal?
Look at how fucking adorable it looks
Look at it’s ears
These are serval cubs. I wanna hug them. They don’t want to be hugged and will probably eat my face of if I get too close. But I love them
It’s in the family in the cat and has some domestic cat breeds. An adult can ranger from 54 to 62 cm from the shoulders to the ground. They weigh around 9 to 18 kilos
The serval has really good senses and is active day and night. It can jump atleast 2 meters from the ground to then land on their prey.
Several’s mate once or twice a year and carry the young for two or three months. After around 12 months the young will leave their mother to live for themselves.
I’ve already said that normally jump 2 meters, right?
Well they can jump like 3.6 meters in the air to catch birds mid flight
I have nothing more, just needed to share some

welcome to emo moss’s menagerie of animal facts !
commencing today because i’ve finally stopped putting this shit off
today’s animal is the FLAT HEADED CAT (Prionailurus planiceps)
the flat headed cat is a small wild cat with reddish-brown fur. they prey mostly on aquatic animals and are extremely elusive, sometimes dubbed “the most unknown cat in the world.” these guys were first recorded in 1827 and despite efforts since then, they are remarkably elusive and hard to find. they are critically endangered, with <2,500 estimated to be left in the wild. they are normally nocturnal, but captive specimens have been known to be crepuscular. they are known for their wide, close-set eyes, small ears, short legs, and (obviously) flat head.

flat headed cats are very unique because of the nominal flattened shape of their heads. it’s unclear why their heads are shaped that way!
their eyes are very large and set very very close together, giving them the appearance of some sort of extraterrestrial cat thingy. it’s likely because they are nocturnal. these things can look you straight in the eyes if they wish (but they probably won’t, because they’re very shy)
they share a characteristic with cheetahs and fishing cats ! their claws are not fully retractable and they have about 2/3rds of their claws protruding at all times.
these guys are ITTY BITTY TINY. they have a head and body length of about 13-20 inches (41-50 cm) and a very short tail of 5-6 inches (13 to 15 cm)!
their diets are mostly aquatic and they have been known to wash their food in water like raccoons!
both males and females scent mark by raising their leg and spraying urine in their territories.
captive adults were observed groping and pawing along the bottom of a pool with their front paws spread, again very similar to raccoons !
their vocalizations, although we do not know much about them, have been reported to be similar to that of a domestic cat’s. kittens meow similarly and adults have been recorded exhibited purring noises that sound remarkably similar to a domestic cat’s!
after they catch their prey, which is aquatic, they usually take them at least 2 meters away from the body of water so that the prey cannot escape again.
another consistent weird body feature: from what has been recorded, their teeth are unusually long for a feline!

In honor of Friday the 13th, I think we deserve some black cat facts!
(it also gives me a chance to show off my kit😅)
Tumblr media
We've all heard the myths and ledgends of how black cats are bad luck, but how did that come to be? To understand that, we need to see how it all started.
Of course, one of the earliest connections between cats and humans is ancient Egypt, cats often being seen as divine symbols. There was even an Egyptian goddess, Bastet, who had the head of a cat and a slender female body. She was the goddess of protection, pleasure, and the bringer of good health.
But how did they fall from divinity to being bad luck?
Well, they appear in Greek mythology, specifically related to Hecate, who is the goddess of magic, sorcery, the moon and witchcraft. Hecate was described as having a cat as both a pet and a familiar. (Y'know, the thing witches have in European folklore)
You can probably guess where it's going from here, but why did Europe end up hating them so much?
Well, it was the church (Shocking I know). The church insisted black cats were the incarnation of Satan.
It's also heavily linked to paganism which, as the church grew in power, pagans were considered direct threats to the church and thus accused of being witches.
My personal favorite quote is "Cats, like the women accused of witchcraft, tend to exhibit a healthy disrespect of authority" "They don't fawn, like dogs, upon even the unworthy. In the church, neither independent women, nor independent animals, were to be tolerated."
Of course we know Europe did more than that, but what else was there?
Well for one, they blamed the cats for the bubonic plague and started killing them on sight. Unfortunately we now know it wasn't the cats but the fleas on the rats and with very few cats to kill the rats, the plague spread like wild fire.
That superstition of a black cat crossing your path? Yeah that was also the church. It was supposed that if a black cat crossed your path it could have been a witch sending it's familiar to harm you. Similarly they believed it could have been the devil themself. So these peasants would run to the nearest church to ask for blessings. Naturally the church used this, encouraged it, and endorsed these 'bad omens'
These beliefs were of course brought over to America causing the Salem witch trials and countless more deaths of both people and black cats.
Tumblr media
But wait! Not everyone thought they were bad!
In fact, they're helpful to your love life! In Japan it's believed single women who own black cats will attract more suitors. And, in Great Britain’s English Midlands, a black cat is the ideal wedding gift. They’re believed to bring good luck and happiness to the bride. (I'd be so happy to get a cat for a wedding gift??)
Not only can it help your love life, but historically sailor's have been known to bring cats, but specifically black cats on ships for mousing (and probably companionship). But why black cats? Well, they're thought to bring safe passage. Plus they've been noted to have a higher catch rate. It makes sense for the black cat to be a better night hunter, blending in and all.
Pirates also had ties with them, though it's a bit tricky. If a black cat was walking towards them it was bad luck, walking away was good luck, and if they jumped on and then off the ship it was thought the ship would sink.
However, black cat arriving at your doorstep signals prosperity, a common belief in Scotland. And a black cat crossing your path signals good luck in England and Ireland!
Tumblr media
Okay enough superstitions, what about facts for the actual cat itself?
I'm going to ruin some hearts, but I'm counting this as a black cat fact. There's no such thing as a black panther, there's only melanistic jaguars and leopards. If you look closely they all have spots.
Their black coats may offer them some protection from diseases!
In fact, the mutations causing the black coat affect the same genes that offer HIV resistance to humans.
And since cats can experience some health issues we do (cancer, HIV, Alzheimer's ect.) they make perfect models for studying human disease. By figuring out how cats have evolved to resist diseases, researchers can learn how to prevent disease in humans!
Black cats can change color! If your black cat has a tabby stripe gene and loves to lay in the sun, its fur can turn a brownish color. Why? The sun’s rays break down the pigment in their fur to reveal the underlying tabby stripes.
Here's an example from my black cat! You can see how the half in the sun is far more of a brown color than the side away from it.
Tumblr media
This got very long but I hope y'all enjoyed these black cat facts! :)
(and also the pictures of my cat)

To those with cat AUs, here are some lesser known things about cats [results from my own studies. 8 cats who all acted differently were used, the results came from five or more of the cats]
most cats enjoy calm music
cats will want to cuddle their owner when being sung to by said owner
cats can recognize when they’re being sung to
cats can recognize their owner’s voice in any context including with filters or slightly distorted, but not with an actual voice changer
cats do infact fluently understand their owners
cats taste in music can vary based on personality
darker furred cats are more likely to enjoy heavy metal or alternative and indie music than light furred cats
cats can recognize when they’re liked or not even when you put on an act, and choose who they prefer based on how much they’re liked by their preferred person
cats can tell whether or not you’re actually angry with them
cats get happier when you join them or encourage their instinctual behaviors such as sharpening claws or “hunting”
cats know when you feel sympathy for them, and even if you hate them they’re more likely to love you because of this
cats often listen to the music their owner or preferred person is listening to, even if they hate it
cats prefer to be scratched on the neck, back of the ears, chin, base of the tail (for most, not all), and cheeks over anywhere else on their body
Inside/Outside, Outdoor, Older and Rescue cats are more likely to appreciate their owner or preferred person than a bought or adopted cat, a cat that was a kitten when you met/got it, or a cat born inside your home
cat owners will heal faster when injured or wounded simply due to two things, the frequency of a cats purr (only works on broken bones and torn muscles), and the serotonin a cat brings boosts health (works on anything and everything that isn’t a neurodivergency or considered terminal, including mental physical and emotional)
This was specifically for all the TSaMS cat AUs I've been seeing lately but anyone else can use it

Whenever I tell my mom 'terrifying' cat facts I always do it in my best HABIT impression because I feel like he would just say "cats can jump 6 to 8 feet without a running start. You aren't safe" as a threat.
For context!
1. My mom is terrified of cats
2. She said she would be safe from our 12 year old Maine coon mix if she slept on my top bunk
3. HABIT in canon owns cats as stated in the one video on the Tribe Twelve channel

ways in which tigers are different than domesticated house cats:
they have round pupils
they love to swim and are excellent swimmers
they can’t purr (big cats that roar can’t purr whereas big cats that don’t roar, such as cheetahs and cougars, can and do purr)
they can’t hold their tails vertically upright, only straight out horizontally or downwards (house cats are the only species of cat that can hold their tails upright)
I think that’s it but lmk if I missed any!
