So I came across this image on pinterest and was like... I want that!
Then I saw the €135 price tag and was like... nah, I don't want that.
I want something like that. But less expensive, and also less multicoloured. The company calls it a cape, so I started project The Cape.
Tumblr media
I went to the fabric store, saw a huge amount of fun stuff but nothing with the stubtle star pattern I had imagined for The Cape, so I just got 200x135cm of the plainest black linen.
Tumblr media
Made some arm holes and hung it up because I have no time to work on it today.
Tumblr media
Tomorrow I'll search through my stash for suitable fabric to line the armholes. And I might commit to the herculean task of hemming the unfinished edges
Project The Cloak pt.2!
Project The Cloak pt.3!

Sorry not sorry to grannypost again but look at this amazing jacket she made me??? She wove it herself on her loom out of wool, silk, banana fibre and scraps of old cloth. The buttons are made of antler. It took her a year and a half and I love it! It’s not vegan, but it is handmade, largely local and very sustainable. It’s an item of clothing I have a personal connection to because of the story behind it, and it shows that reducing how much cotton and polyester we wear doesn’t have to mean drab or boring clothing. So it feels pretty solarpunk to me! Now to learn how to do this kind of thing myself…

Inspired by this post and a comment I've just realised it may be helpful for people just learning to sew and make clothes what's easier to start with and what's harder.
So offering my opinion as a cosplayer who's sewn a lot of things.
(Baring in mind this is as the most basic version, not taking into account pleats or collars etc)
Starting with easier.
- T-shirts and tops, fairly simple, you could literally a square/rectangle and leave bits unsewn for the sleeves and head and it'd still work, for the sleeves, it's just more rectangles.
(Will help to curve the holes though, especially for the neckline)
- Dresses honestly pretty similar just long rectangle, just means you're using more fabric.
With both of these if you want to take it in anywhere to make it more form fitting it tends just to be like a curve inward, just make sure it's all flat or you'll catch some fabric on the side you're not looking at and have to go over again and possibly have puncture holes depending on what fabric you're using.
-Skirts again pretty simple, it just depends how you want to do the waist, and making sure if it doesn't unfastened all the the way down that the top of the skirt can go over your hips.
- Trousers (pants) are hell, I know people that have degrees in fashion or costume making and still despise making trousers.
Important to remember that you're probably gonna need the back to come a bit higher up, if you find it riding too low add in a long triangle, you'll often find bought jeans with this done on purpose.
The inseam? Honestly I have no tips it's why I hate making trousers.
If you're using an elastic waistband pretty sure the rule is elastic the measurement of your waist, fabric to the measurement of your hips/the biggest oart it has to go over. Elastic will stretch but not all fabrics will.
- Jumpsuits/Dungarees, I haven't made many but the issues here is again the inseam plus making sure you don't give yourself a wedgie cause it needs to go over your shoulders as well, so probably like give extra length than you would for top + trousers and then take it in.
- Gloves are a nightmare, would not recommend, I only tend to make them for facepaint characters if I can't find some online that are long enough. You will have to unpick some thread between your fingers, I don't know what else to offer.
Almost anything that fits you when on and is just a pain to put on can be fixed with a longer zip, I have a dress that fits perfectly when on but because its fitted at the waist it won't go over my hips or shoulders unless the zip goes all the way to my hips, but it works.
Will eventually do like a proper guide to making stuff as simple as possible, I have both a top, trousers and cloak to make for an upcoming cosplay so that's gonna be fun.

Mixing different traditional clothing is a passion of mine : here I'm wearing a traditional ukrainian skirt, and I made the collar based on Mexican folkloric dresses. Embroideries are inspired from a folkloric transylvanian vest I own. Same for the headband. And while I was taking the pictures a lady walked by and stopped to tell me I looked beautiful, we love women supporting other women !

ways in which tigers are different than domesticated house cats:
they have round pupils
they love to swim and are excellent swimmers
they can’t purr (big cats that roar can’t purr whereas big cats that don’t roar, such as cheetahs and cougars, can and do purr)
they can’t hold their tails vertically upright, only straight out horizontally or downwards (house cats are the only species of cat that can hold their tails upright)
I think that’s it but lmk if I missed any!

~ made a hat ~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
very happy with it!!
can wear hat and headphones at the same time
green and black and perfect
black yarn is thrifted, green leftover from a sweater
literally just a square with some increases in the first row
almost a one day make (had to frog a lot, before I decided I wasn't gonna do fancy slip stitch color changes)
normally not a hat person, but this one fucks AND hugs
made just in time for the temperatures to drop below zero for the rest of the year

people who know how to sew on tumblr, i need a little help. i started sewing my prom dress for the 29th with my janome 7025. my fabric is a glittery stretch fabric, and it wasn't causing me any problems for most of the dress' construction. but for some reason, my machine stopped stitching into it at some point?? it just leaves holes wherever the needle went. i've tried re-threading everything, changing the tension, using a zigzag stitch, i did my best to clean the glitter/lint out of my bobbin holder, and still nothing. it's not my machine, bc it sews through other fabrics just fine, i think the fabric is the problem. does anybody have a (preferably cheap) solution to this?? any tips are appreciated!

I learned how to crochet in this hexagon cardi craze because I want one, but since I wanted to practice and figure out the construction first, I made one for my seven year old
Now I’m super excited to start mine, especially as I know what I want to change and how to fit it better, but I have to wait for the yarn

Two drawstring backpacks and two hoodies made within a week. That's a lot for me - even if this kind of sewing does not require excessive use of my brain in the process, it still takes time.
