Storytime: When I was a kid, my mother used to play the old Castlevania games on Nintendo, and later PlayStation. Watching her play any video game is a really comforting memory of mine, but Castlevania was always a favorite. So, naturally, when Netflix came out with their series, I watched it with my mom and we had a good time. However, during this scene…this intense scene with Isaac, who is arguably one of the coolest characters in the show, she just busts out laughing and doesn’t stop. I personally don’t see what’s so funny, so I wait for her to calm down enough to explain what’s going on.

My mom (still laughing): “I’m sorry, but that night creature behind him looks way too cheerful. All the others look menacing enough, but that one’s all, ‘Hee, hee, I’m on a field trip!’”

So then I see the night creature standing to Isaac’s left (his left) with its big, goofy grin and now I can’t unsee it. And ever since that day, the saga of Field Trip the Night Creature lives rent free in my head.
