“Ooo, this should be good. The writer telling us a story. One of your own, perhaps?” Wanda asked, a huge smile on her face.
The corners of your mouth curled up to form a small smile as your friend brought up your hobby. “Well, kinda.”
“Well, don’t keep us waiting, go on and share.” Andy said, encouraging you.
“Right, here I go. So, this happened right before I was about to start university, almost two years ago. A group of friends of mine were having a small party down by the lake of my home town. Well, it was more like an old rock quarry and there was all kinds of equipment left behind. It was actually advised not to swim in the water, there was even a big warning sign claiming that there was debris in the water. But of course, that didn’t stop us from going in and swimming anyway. We were young and unstoppable, at least, that’s what we thought at the time. The night was young and the moon was perfectly round and high in the sky, lighting up the whole quarry.
“I was enjoying the night by sitting around the bonfire and talking with my friends. Things couldn’t have been better, heck, there was even a D.J. set up and someone was playing music. It wasn’t until a group of older guys showed up with some alcohol when things started to get a bit more rowdy. At first, people had only been swimming in the more shallow part of the lake. But as the night went on and the more booze was consumed, everyone started to get a bit more daring. I watched from my seat as everyone started to jump off of the old equipment and into the lake. There was one particular platform that hung over the deepest part of the lake that seemed to be a favorite to jump from.
“My stomach churned as I watched my peers jump willingly into the treacherous lake. Splash after splash, a sense of relief would wash over me each time someone emerged from the water. Even my friends that I had been sitting with each took a turn jumping into the lake from that platform. I shook my head no as they tried to get me to go with them and when they returned from their jump, they tried again. I kept telling them no and if it hadn’t been for the older group dragging me out of my chair and towards the platform, I never would’ve jumped. I took a deep breath and climbed the rickety ladder up to the platform. My whole body shook as I carefully walked across the rusted metal. As I got closer to the edge, I started to panic, wishing more and more that I had just stayed home. The distant chanting of my peers encouraging me to jump made me even more anxious about this whole thing.
“I took a few steps back and tried to hype myself up as I pulled my hair back and up into a ponytail. Before I knew it, my breath hitched in my throat as I jumped off of the platform. The wind stung my face and arms as I plummeted towards the dark blue water. My body smacked hard against the surface of the water as I made impact with it and I gasped for air as I resurfaced. I was met with the sound of applause as I swam back to shore. One of my friends greeted me with a blanket and ushered me over to the fire. People patted my shoulders and asked for high fives as I passed them. As I warmed up by the fire, my body still shook and ached and an unusual cold feeling had started to wash over me. I stared into the fire, still in disbelief that I had actually done that.
“After a few moments, commotion around the shore got my attention and I decided to go check it out. I looked to see what everyone was chattering and pointing at, then I saw it. There was a body floating in the water and one of the older guys was swimming out to see what was going on and if the person was okay. When he got there, he examined the area and as hoisted the other body over his arm, he lifted a huge metal pipe. ‘There’s a metal pipe in here,’ he shouted before tossing the pipe off to the side. Everyone gasped, even myself, as the guy swam back to shore with the body. I watched as the guy started to perform CPR and as I watched, other people started to hurry up and leave.
“A gut wrenching sob caught my attention and I couldn’t help but be filled with worry once I realized the sob had come from one of my friends. I walked over to her to try and provide some comfort but it seemed like whatever I did, failed. That’s when it hit me. As I stood next to my friend, noticing the familiarity of the body that the guy was performing CPR on. It was my body. I stumbled over to it and just as I got to it, I collapsed to my knees. I hadn’t survived the fall. Of course, I would be the one to hit a metal pipe and die. This isn’t fair. I was supposed to have a nice, long life and start my life at university and maybe even fall in love. And oh god, my mom. Who’s going to look after her?
“It wasn’t long before police and an ambulance showed up. By then though, nearly everyone had left the quarry. The police questioned the few that had actually stayed and I stayed near my body the entire time, not wanting to leave it. When the paramedics finally lifted my body into the ambulance, I could feel myself starting to fade. As the ambulance drove away with my body, everything started to go dark and life ceased to exist.”
The group was so enthralled by your story that they didn’t hear the approaching footsteps. So, when a twig snapped, everyone turned in the direction and were met with a bright light from a flashlight.
“Whoa there, Park Ranger Bodecker here, didn’t mean to startle you lot.” The park ranger chuckled, his drawl thick. “Everyone alright? Look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
The park ranger scanned the group with his flashlight and when it landed where you had just been sitting, you were gone.

The last story is a good game bc you can spill buckets of fruit and make npcs walking around slip and fall on them and they get upset. You also have an arrow with the option to shoot banana peels and you can point and shoot them at people to do the same thing. You can also use this against the penultimate boss of the game to make him slip and drop his own weapon so you can use it against him. A huge leek is a powerful new game + weapon you can unlock. You can get marginal stat upgrades by catching random flower petals in a windy alleyway. Also there’s like, a plot or whatever but that’s secondary to all these other things

With Xenoblade 3 releasing today, I wanted to shout-out Nintendo of Europe. During the early 2010s, so many games were being left in Japan and they never would have been localized into English if it wasn't for NOE. This includes The Big 3 (Xenoblade 1, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower) but also other titles like Another Code R, Last Window, Solatorobo, Project Zero 2, and many more. So happy that NOE stepped up and translated these titles when NOA passed on them back in the day.

I played a little bit of the Harvestella demo today, and...
If you have played Rune Factory and/or The Last Story and enjoyed those, I feel like you’d really enjoy Harvestella. Some similar elements between Harvestella and both games I noticed were the following:
An amnesiac protagonist (who has a non-binary option on top of your typical male/female options)! It’s a staple in Rune Factory and it’s a thing in Harvestella.
A literal season/time where all the crops wither and the air you breathe can be toxic (Quietus) for some unknown reason that we’ll probably investigate during gameplay. This feels very similar to how the land decayed in The Last Story, except that the decaying is faster and takes place within a specific timeframe, while The Last Story’s decaying was ongoing and much slower (except for later on in the game).
Extremely beautiful environments. The game paid a lot of attention to aesthetics in the setting and it shows. Even the season of Quietus looks pretty, in an ominous way.
