Could you do an Ari Levinson x teen!daughter!reader after she has a hard day?
this is my first time writing a daughter!reader insert so please if you have any tips do share cause it was tricky at times, this was fun to write nevertheless! I feel like Ari and Steve would be the best people to talk to after a hard day, (it also help that they have huge chests you can cry into).
seriously tho, fuck group projects

pairing: dad!Ari Levinson x teen!daughter!reader
warnings; anxiety, panic attacks, self deprecation, group projects
summary: life is hard, especially when sometimes the thoughts become too much. But your father is nowhere but where you need him, and he’s got a hell of a lot of patience.
Tumblr media
The cracked concrete under your converses crunch as you stomp down the edged path, the summer afternoon rays have just set in, beating down at you incessantly. You can feel the sweat drip down your neck, cascading down your back, before absorbing into your dampening shirt. You itch with the need for a shower, cringing at the sweat pooling near the nape of your neck, you almost scream when you have to blow your hair out of your face for the 100th time.
Your backpack presses painfully into your shoulders, weighed down by the thick binders of books you had shoved from your locker the second the bell rang. It wouldn't normally be a problem, especially since your house was only a short walk away, but God had found it amusing to throw a wrench in that, and instead, your usual short cut had been taken over my fluorescent vests and the smell of sweating workmen rebuilding what you had thought was a perfectly well built gravel road.
It had been years since you had last taken this route, and in your haste to get home, you had forgotten how scenic it was. The spiny concrete path was enraptured with nature, with low willow trees bending over so close you had to duck from its emerald leaves, and a river stream that broke the sunlight across it like diamonds. Your fingers itched to grab your notebook and draw a quick sketch, but you didn't doubt something would bite you if you tried reaching into the black hole that was your backpack.
Summer break was just around the corner, creeping in to the point where you could practically taste the salt air of golden beaches and feel the sticky mess of dripping red ice pops. Most importantly, you couldn't wait until you were dragging Ari to one of the hundred museum’s your town had to offer. Your classmates had reiterated the same desires, some telling you about the trips they would take abroad, and through the country, Ryan, a short but loud kid in  your class, had even said his dad had gotten his family an RV to sail across the states.
You would've liked that, you think, travelling through the country with a beat up RV, collecting trinkets and cheap souvenirs from each city and town you drove to despite your fathers protests. Ari maybe even finally teaching you how to drive, finding an empty country road where it was so far from civilization your father would be sure you wouldn't accidentally kill some pedestrian.
Either which way your summer break would go, you couldn't wait before emptying your locking and leaving those faded blue entrance doors to your school. It wasn't that you hated school, in fact you didn't mind it, especially when the tight knit group of friends you had made it that much more tolerable, but it seems like more and more things were happening that was just piling onto, and you feared you were one thread away from imploding.
And the reminder of what had occurred today turns your mouth sour, and the relief the scenic trail had given you is now overrun by an immense feeling of anger and frustration. Your shoulder still aches from your backpack, and the never ending sweat continues to drip down your back, and it all just feels too much.
You had this fear, this incredibly foolish fear that you were unknowingly despised. It had taken over your entire life one summer, shackling you to the confines of your room despite your friends begging for you to come out, you just felt it, like the blood in your veins, that you were just, unlikable.
And most days your friends would snap you from that never ending spiral, reminding you of how loved and adored you were, your own father, despite being the biggest burly man you knew, wouldn’t think twice before sitting you down and letting you cry your heart out to him, before taking you out to your favourite diner in town.
“Nothing cures tears like a burger and milkshake”
At Least it was better than having him storm into school and beat up the first person who looked at you wrong, yeah much better.
But recently, it felt like you could feel yourself slipping into that self-deprecating puddle, and there was no way to stop it, left to just watch yourself sink, sink, sink like quicksand until you were drowning. You feared today had been the day that broke the camel's back, and it began to hit you, as you were left to be consumed with your thoughts walking home, how much it had affected you.
You were so distracted with your thoughts, you hadn't realised you had trekked through most of the trail, seeing the familiar sight of your neighbourhood just around the bend. It was the afternoon rush, and the street was alive with sedans and vans packed with kids, some smushing their faces against the window, the bickering sound of siblings fighting over food and the familiar sound of cartoons coming from Ipads.
You would have appreciated the sight of the world alive if you weren’t drowning in the anxious thoughts that circled you like a shark, waiting to pounce. Jaywalking across the road, and avoiding the judgy look from the lollipop man, you finally make it to your street, and yet your relief is short lived when you nearly fall due to an obstruction on the road. You catch yourself just in time, stumble a little before realising you've nearly tripped over your neighbour's dog. The golden haired boy looks at you curiously, unfazed and not moving from his rested position on the sidewalk. The poor boy was exhausted from the afternoon sun, flapping his ears as you scratch under them.
“You better be careful next time Sunny” Calls your neighbour, waving at you from her seated position on the coach that was pushed onto the decked veranda. A embroided fan is gripped in her hand, and a glass of something orange rattles with ice cubes in her other. She waves you over, and you jog across her yard, running a hand through the sprinkler she had going.
“Bruno’s been sittin’ there for hours, don’t know what's gotten into him, ‘specially with this heat and all” Your neighbour says, passing you a glass of what you now recognise to be cordial. The artificial sweetness tastes like heaven on your tongue, and you can’t help but gulp it down in 3 sips before wiping a hand across your mouth.
Your neighbour smiles at you, her curious gaze penetrating you like you were translucent.
“You alright there Sunny?” She asks, and you have to peel your mind away from the cesspool of your thoughts to form a coherent response.
“I think it's just the heat, I’ve been feeling out of it all day” You reply, your neighbour nodding along to you, before the clank of metal resounds from your backyard.
“That’s your dad, I think he's been trying to fix that car in the back, he's worse than Bruno that one, won’t even stop for a drink” Your neighbour teases, and at the mention of your father you quickly bid her goodbye before wasting no time to run up the front porch stairs stuffing your key into the door. The cool air of your hallway almost makes you cry.
You pass by the hooked photos of you and dad, before dumping your heavy backpack onto the couch, craning your neck for any sign of your father but of course he isn't anywhere you can see.
“Dad” You yell, walking towards the kitchen, hoping he hears you through the fly screen of the backyard.
“Dad” You yell again, irritated at his silence, you open the fridge door, resting your head on the shelf as the cool air calms the rising anger and sweat. Your neighbour's generous drink had satiated you for the length it took to walk from her house to your own, not goddamn long.
You peer at the fridge, only to find the shelves bare and the sides where a usual jug of ice water would be, empty. You slam the fridge door so hard, the cabinets rattle from your abuse.
You notice the jug on the countertop that you had filled with water in the morning, now warm and gross from the afternoon heat. Your father had completely forgotten your request to put it in the fridge earlier before you had left for school. A simple, straight forward request that would take no longer than 5 minutes.
You storm through the kitchen, sliding the fly screen door open to see your father under a pick up truck that had been sitting in your backyard for months. Your father seemed to love taking on impossible projects rather than completing simple tasks you had specifically asked him to.
You storm towards him, noticing the faded red beat up radio spurting out Marvin Gaye. Of course he couldn't hear you, you could barely think against the loud tunes coming from the speaker.
You turn the speaker off with your foot, screaming rather purposefully
“DAD!!”
Your father shrieks, a loud clunk coming from under the truck before a groan follows. Something like a muffled curse leaves your father's mouth before he rolls himself out from under the truck.
“Jesus, honey, I almost broke my nose under there” Your father groans out, dusting his hands across his jeans before leaning back onto this palms.
There's motor oil and grease splattered across his worn shirt, a bandana is wrapped like a headband across his forehead, pushing out the loose strands of curls sticking to his face. His hands have it the worst, charcoal black, the consistency of tar wedged between his fingers and under his fingernails.
“Pass me a rag will you?” He nods towards a dirty chequered handkerchief, wiping his brow with a hand as the sun beats down on the both of you.
You stare at him baffled, did he not see the gigantic jug of warm water you had in your hand?
“You alright there hun? Some aliens did not abduct my daughter and bring in a clone?” You father jokes, chuckling at his own joke before stopping abruptly at your still silence.
“Shit, for real? Bring me my daughter back!-” Your father replies, getting up from his knelt position.
“Dad” You reply monotone
“-All honesty your kind should be pretty scared, that girl has a mean right hook, so if you even dare try any-” Your father continues rambling
“Dad! God! Can you look at me?” You shout, and your father looks taken back, you never shouted, not really, not unless you were on a rollercoaster or because you were mad. And your backyard sure wasn't Six Flags.
“I left this Jug of water on the countertop, and I told you to put it in the fridge because someone in this house actually listens to the weekly forecast. And I was right, today was the hottest day since, since, like 50 years! And- and you- I told you and you know what you said? You said okay, you told me you weren't a 5 year old and would know that a jug of water on the kitchen counter had to be put in the fridge”
Your father shifts his gaze to the jug of water in your hand, noticing how your arm shakes a little, the knuckles in your hand protruding out as you hold tight, too tight.
“I come home expecting a nice cold drink of water, and I see it, still there, not moved one inch from where I put it!” You shout, frustrated, you want to throw the jug across the yard, watch the glass shatter and water spill into the concrete, turning it dark before the sun brightens it again.
“Sun? Hey, I’m sorry. That was my fault, I should've put it in the second you asked me to, I just got wrapped up in this,” You father nods his head to the pickup truck propped up by bricks, “But that was more important, whatever you tell me is more important okay?” Your father replies, and you nod in agreement
“Yes, that's right” You reply, and your father moves closer to you
“Can I take the jug from you? I’ll just place it right here okay?” Your father replies, and you nod as he takes the jug from you and places it to the side, you don't notice it, but your hands still shake and Ari clasps them in his own, smiling down at you as he holds them to his chest.
“You’re shaking honey” Your father replies
You stare down at your vibrating hands, shaking them as if that would tear away all the anxiety that feels like it's begun to stick to your skin. It’s a different kind of heat that fills you, your chest aches like air is being passed through a wall, every shallow breath leaves you panting for oxygen and you reach out to Ari in panic distress.
“Sun? Sunny? Baby can you hear me? I got you alright? Oh honey” Ari strains, engulfing you into his chest, before picking you up bridal style
“I’m just gonna take you inside okay? Away from all this heat, you don't have to do anything, just hold onto me okay?”
You can't bring yourself to form a coherent response, pushing your face into his shoulder to stop the tears from streaming down. It was all too much, the thoughts, the fears, the black hole that always seemed to pull you down into it, like it was a shadow following you everywhere, waiting and waiting until it could sink its claws knuckles deep.
The motion of Ari taking you back inside feels numb, like you're wading through a current. It's all around you now, your mind, it's slipping between the cracks like sand through fingers.
You find your back against the living room couch, a glass of water on the coffee table and that sight makes you sink, it makes you break because it's cold to the touch and you've ruined it all.
“Sunny? You gotta breathe for me, can you do that? In, out, in out, you know this, it's muscle memory. I know it seems impossible, but your body knows what to do, just let it, let go”
You don't notice your shallow hiccuped breathing until you take control of it, forcing your lungs to swallow air, breathing it in through the stomach like your father had taught you. It takes time, but Ari is patient, holding you as you breathe in and out, he would do it forever if he wanted to, he would be buried holding his baby girl if he needed to.
“You wanna tell me what's been going on?” Your father replies after he feels the rhythmic beat of your chest return to the pace he's memorised.
“I- I don't know, it's that feeling Dad, I- I can't help but feel so shitty about myself. And I- I don't know if its school or or” You ramble, and your Ari just listens, listens to you unleash all the bottled feelings you had kept hanging onto your shoulders.
“Anything happen at school?” Ari replies
You shrug, wiping away tears that had streamed down your cheeks
“Group project” You reply, and Ari nods, rubbing a hand down soothingly up and down your back.
“Someone giving you a hard time?” Ari replies “I swear to god if-”
“No, no no. Nothing like that, just someone being condescending and equally unhelpful. I asked her multiple times, this- this girl part of the group to contribute and you know what she does instead? Take my name off the goddamn paper” You gruff
“What? Are you kidding? Does your teacher know? Do you want me to call her?”
“No its fine, I handled it, but it was just frustrating, felt like she hated me for absolutely no reason, and no one in the group even cared, it was like, it was like they silently agreed to everything she said.
“You can’t control how others view you, trust me on this, people are going to think what you think, and no amount of changing or convincing will shift their own perception of you. But hey” Your father holds your face in his large palms, rubbing away the tears with his thumb
“That's all it is, a perception. They don't know you, they're outsiders looking in, and there are plenty of people who have known you your whole life that still won't understand you. And that's okay, you're the only one who has to live inside your head so fuck em’, this is your life baby girl, and you are the most talented, intelligent and most wonderful person I will ever now. Ever.”
You can’t hide your smile, and your fathers eyes light up at the change in your face. You reach for him and move to hug his neck, with your eyes squeezed shut, you don't doubt that your anxiety will always be a part of your life, your own little roommate, but you don't doubt that your father will be there too, taking up most of the coach, and filling your life until he was apart of you too.
“Fuck group projects, they still make you do that?” Ari replies after a beat
“Fuck group projects” You giggle, whilst nodding.
The silence of the living room is interrupted by a loud gurgling coming from your stomach, and your father chuckles and it tells you enough of what hes going to say next.

“And if you had looked closer I bought a 10 pack of water, it’s sitting there in the back shelves. Know it's hard to see cause of all the other shit so I don't blame you-”
You shift from your position on the diner coach.
“What? You- you should've told me dad, I got mad at you for nothing” You reply, now feeling the guilt flood through you, you had a hard time regulating your feelings, and sometimes your father is on the receiving end of it.
Your father shakes you off, leaning back onto the booth couches
“No, no no, stop with that, you were right, you had asked me and I forgot, and it might of been small but you had a lot going on and I couldn't see that, that's my fault, I’m your father, I’m meant to notice these things, it's my job” Your Father replies, sighing
“For the record, your a pretty good dad despite that brain of yours” You reply, smiling
“What, you're saying there's something wrong with my noggin? The same one that gave you all your smarts huh?” Your father teases, pointing a fry at you
“Um..I’m pretty sure I got that from Mom so” You giggle,
Something flashes across your fathers eyes, like a bittersweet nostalgia that glazes over his blues, and he nods at your reply
“Yeah, yeah you did” Your father smiles, and you bite your lip at the mention of your Mom, savouring the moment of the silent exchange of the memories of her between you and your father, a silent longing that never fully goes away even years after.
“So you think we should get you tested?” You reply after a moment
“Hhm” Your father coughs out, blinking back his eyes as he shifts them from staring blankly out the diner window.
“You know just in case of an early onset of dementia” You reply
“I heard their handing out free lobotomies from Levinson's backyard, you gotta get under a pick up truck and get your daughter real angry so that when she screams your name you bang your head real hard under there” You continue laughing
Your father shakes his head “You’ve been keeping that one in huh?, Just know the feds will be coming after you” Your father replies
“What do you mean? '' You ask confused, and that confusion doubles as your father grins at your reply, like there was something he was hiding from you.
“I was fixing that pick up truck so I could teach you during the break, and then it's yours, if you well, pass which is highly unlikely since you don't know one thing about motor vehicles-” Your father replies, before he gets cut off by you squeal, you scramble from across the booth and wrap your arms tight around Ari, stuffing your face into his neck as he grips you tight with his arms.
“You’ve just been promoted from pretty good to amazing” You sniffle, and your father chuckles, rubbing his hand across your back.
“Don't get too excited it ain't finished yet, still gotta fix the motor, and that goddamn sluggish accelerator” Your father groans
“The oil router to the engine, yeah yeah, I’m already a genius at this” You reply and you grin as the sound of your father laugh spreads through him, like a syrup of joy that seems into you, in a way that overshadows all the anxieties and thoughts and fears that had taken homage in your head.
Burgers and Millshakes really did solve everything, especially ones where the cook listens to 70’s pop out of the same beat up stereo your friend had sold for a pack of Marlboros

Ghost of you
Tumblr media
Pairings: Natasha Trace x female reader. Synopsis: Natasha loved you, that’s why she let you go. Warnings: mentions of break ups, heart break, alcohol, depression Thank you @callsign-phoenix for proofreading Thank you @rv-ca for your lovely request ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Natasha watched you cross the bar with all the grace and elegance you had always had. The baby blue summer dress flowed effortlessly around your thighs as your hips swayed, your hair flicked carelessly over your shoulder as you laughed at another one of ‘his’ jokes. The setting sun cast an orange glow over your skin, creating a radiance around you like an invisible halo. Natasha knew she shouldn't have come, she’d told herself she’d wanted a drink, but her neat whiskey was long since forgotten in front of her, barely touched and she certainly wouldn’t finish it. She never knew why she had felt so drawn to you, even in the beginning it had never made sense, an invisible string seemed to pull her and despite her best efforts to fight it off her feelings only grew stronger, and the grip you had on her strengthened to the point of no return.
You looked happy, back arching and head thrown back as you laughed at another one of ‘his’ jokes, calling him ‘baby’ and wrapping your hand around his bicep. Natasha couldn’t help but grimace at the stunning engagement ring that adorned your long fingers. So that was it. It was finally over. Natasha knew she’d ruined any chance she’d ever had with you, but in the back of her mind there was always a small glimmer of hope that maybe, one day you’d come back to her.
The bar filled up quickly with the evening rush, crowds of aviators filling in to grab a quick drink or a game of pool to end their day. Natasha watched as her friends stumbled through the door, all joking and smiling jovially. Bradley was the last to come in but he noticed her first, waving casually in her direction. Natasha raised her hand in response before looking back down at their drink, the golden brown liquid swirled in small waves around the bottom of the glass, cascading up and down the sides but never reaching the rim. In that moment Natasha could understand how people drowned their sorrows. She’d never been someone who necessarily enjoyed getting drunk, but the thought of being so paralytic that she just couldn’t remember seemed pretty inviting.
It had been over a year since your break up and while you had moved on, even if it was a little too quickly for Natasha’s liking, she was glad things had worked out for you.
Natasha had never meant to break your heart, it was far from intentional when she’d walked away. She’d left to protect you because she loved you so she let you go. But how could you explain that to someone you love? ‘It’s not you it’s me’ never goes down well.
A hand being placed against her shoulder caused Natasha to shoot bolt upright, followed by a familiar chuckle.
“Easy there Phoenix, you’re a little jumpy, aren’t you?” Bradley took a seat on the bar beside you, a beer in one hand while his fingers danced across the top of the bar like he was playing the keys of a piano.
“What do you want, Bradshaw?” Natasha’s voice was laced with venom and a little harsher than she had meant to sound, but Braldey looked unfazed. His eyes narrowed, causing the crow feet to crease slightly, and his mouth opened as if he went to say something else before stopping himself half way and gulping for air like a fish.
“I’m sorry,” Natasha hurried, throning to face her friend properly and taking his hands into hers, rubbing her thumb across his knuckles. “I didn’t mean it.”
“I know,” Braldey replied nonchalantly, turning his head away to access the rest of the bar.
“So what are you doing here, because I thought you’d planned a quiet night in?” Braldey knew of course he wasn’t an idiot, he was probably the reason why half the team turned up at the bar on a week night and Natasha made a mental note to thank the others later.
“I just wanted a drink,” Natasha placed the glass to her lips, flicking her neck backwards and downing the whiskey like a shot. If she’d have thrown her head back any faster she’d have had whiplash and combined with the burning sensation building in her throat, the tears began to build in the corner of her eyes.
“You don’t really expect me to believe that, do you? I know you better than that, Nat.” He did, of course he did, and despite Natasha’s best efforts she couldn’t stop the tears that brimmed in your eyes and slipped down her cheeks, leaving streaks over her soft flesh. She had known Bradley even longer than she had known you, and he probably knew her better than her own parents. The only problem was you knew Natasha well too, you knew her likes and dislikes, her unusual habits, the way she liked her eggs turned over and how she hated making the bed. Natasha had opened herself up to you more than she had ever realised and she couldn’t handle it. So she walked away. It had hurt like hell, but she’d walked and she’d regretted it every day since. She couldn’t even remember the amount of times she’d driven by your house on autopilot, always wanting to stop and knock on your door to bed for forgiveness. But she was stubborn, too stubborn for her own good some would say, so she never did stop. Instead she chose a life of solitude so there was no one to mourn her when she burnt in, no one to accept the flag at her funeral and cry over her coffin. She’d hated herself for hurting you, but she would have hated herself more if she’d hurt you in that way. Death was too final, at least this way she had said goodbye.
You were swaying beside the jukebox with your fiancé when you spotted Nat. Her eyes were sunken, hair greasy and she had a tight lipped smile as she spoke to Bradley. Your heart dropped. You hadn’t seen her since her outburst, since she’d broken your heart in the middle of the bar and told you she didn’t love you. It had hurt for a long time and even now the dull ache still remained in your chest as a constant reminder. You watched as she stood, walking towards the door with Bradley following close behind, his hand resting on her back to steady her. You wanted to follow them, to reach out to her but you didn’t, you just watched as the woman you loved vanished into thin air.

If you are still accepting prompts I have the cutest idea I saw in a Tiktok - Eddie kisses Steve in the upside down before they part ways and Eddie says make him pay - Eddie and Dustin go to distract the demobats etc
But with like love confessions and pinning and Eddie surving
absolutely loved Voulez-Vous so much like I don’t have enough words to describe it!!!
Always, pal! I'll admit that I hadn't seen the Tik Tok until it came across my dash the other day, so I've been sitting on this one. I'm stoked to finally have an idea for it! & thank you - it's one of my favorites, too! This got a little long, hope you don't mind!!
Locked in the back of a stolen RV parked in an ammo store parking lot, Eddie contemplated the idea of being trapped. In the last forty hours, Eddie came to understand the concept of an animal cornered better than anyone else. And truthfully, only some of that feeling of confinement came from being wanted by the police.
Which was his own fault - there wasn't a single doubt about that. Eddie knew enough about the workings of reality to be aware of the dangers of falling for the wrong person, for the person that, until a day or two ago, Eddie was trained to despise. In a world where Eddie was the freak and a fine line existed between hate and love, there was a smidgen of poetic justice exhibiting itself in the fact that Eddie Munson was falling for Steve Harrington.
It hadn't been all that gradual, either.
To be fair, Eddie had always found Steve's particular aesthetic to be visually pleasing. Who walked around with that much hairspray in their hair without looking for a certain kind of attention, anyway? He had heard all of the rumors started by many of the prettier girls of Hawkins's student body, even bought into them as much as they did. As a young male of a certain age, many of those whispers fueled shame filled fires in moments of weakness - but that was just the idea of him.
Luck, the bastard of an ideal, was flighty in the sense that it brought good fortune right around the time the world was going to shit - especially in Eddie's case. He never thought that a moment of shared eye contact in a state of paranoia would cascade into something that was a long distance from lustful thoughts and stolen personal moments in private.
Steve, despite Eddie's sincere surprise, was like a beating heart. He filled himself up with care and appreciation for the people he chose to have around and pumped out protection like blood through a valve. Though his wit was much more subtle, Eddie appreciated the strength and bravery in the actions he took to offer that protection. Steve even extended that gift to Eddie, which was entirely unexpected from the imago he created of 'the hair' throughout his years in high school.
Never mind the fact that, when all was said and done, Steve was genuine and funny - really goddamn funny. When the kids first started coming to Hellfire Club meetings, Eddie didn't want to believe anything that came out of Dustin's mouth - he truly meant that when he told Steve so. It was impossible to think that Steve Harrington was both good looking and halfway decent. More than halfway, even.
That meant the feelings Eddie always tried to lock away inside of himself were for someone genuinely worth the brain bytes.
Shifting his position on the uncomfortable seat, Eddie reached up to run a shaky hand through the fringe of bangs already in disarray. Now was the absolute worst time to contemplate the inner workings of the most disastrous crush to ever happen, yet he couldn't keep his mind from worrying at it incessantly, like a tongue against a sore tooth.
Mostly because Eddie wasn't far away from being convinced that Steve felt the same.
It was crazy, Eddie already knew that. His thoughts were outreaching all portions of reality that were rational and sensical in any way. Putting that aside, Eddie's brain stuck to the close proximity and probing questions that felt akin to trying to get to know someone. In a moment of weakness, Eddie allowed himself to get carried away, but the consequences weren't what he figured. Steve looked taken aback and somewhat entertained without a sign or symptom of anger or outrage. Eddie wondered what Steve might've done if Robin wasn't standing right there, mediating the interaction.
Of course, Eddie never forgot that Steve was a perpetual flirt that had no conscious recollection of the fact that he was doing such a thing. That kept up a permanent residence in his mind - which was clearly battling with those small periods in time that Eddie was sure Steve was treating him that way for real. There were some looks that just couldn't be faked without at least a little genuine feeling.
Regardless, Eddie was stuck between a giant rock and a very hard place. It looked like there was no end in sight for him, either.
Thankfully, the door of the RV opened and Ericka Sinclair came running in to break up all his wayward thoughts - her eyes were hardened with a determination that shouldn't exist in someone that young. Though, that didn't matter when they were crammed into a stolen vehicle with all of their lives on the line. In the moment, age and class and HP and prior experience in the field didn't matter. They were all equal players on the board.
Things were a whirlwind for a while where Eddie had little time to do anything but hammer nails into a trash can lid and cling to the little moments with Dustin - his friendship with the kid was real, tangible, something he could touch. Worth more of his time than thoughts that cost too much. He would've hated himself if Steve Harrington took up the entirety of his mental capacity while a bit of peace still existed. Especially when Dustin Henderson was so goddamn cute and worthy of the attention.
And while he was strong enough to stick to that resolve all the way through the journey into the Upside Down, Eddie couldn't keep it together long enough to watch Steve walk away - not when he turned in their direction for one last look, last quip, last second of time sharing the same breath. Eddie didn't have it in him to let Steve go without doing something.
Not waiting for rationality to win over control, Eddie let go and gave in - "Steve, wait."
All of the sudden, wide brown eyes were on him and every thought, every thing Eddie knew, every everything vanished. His feet carried him forward like the path was pulling him there on its own accord. The glint of his rings were bright in the haze of the Upside Down, drawing his eye just seconds before they were stuck in the hem of Steve's jacket. It took but a small yank to have Steve close to him, and another moment of drawing breath for their lips to be against each other kissing, sharing something so real and visceral.
It was only seconds, that Earth moving kiss, but it ensnarled Eddie in a grip so tight that it was hard to pull away. There were so many things to say, truths to utter, yet he settled on "make him pay" - it was no wonder that he only got a breathless nod in return. He kept Steve in his grasp until it was too much; forcing his fingers to work under his command was difficult but he let go, he had to. Eddie nodded back, gulping in a large gasp of air to deal with the empty space the sight of Steve walking away brought about.
He took another second to slap a lid on the well in his heart, then turned to Dustin with a grin - "now for the fun part!"
Dustin followed him silently into the trailer with a contemplative look on his face. Once they were inside, he yanked on Eddie's vest. "What the heck was that?" The squint of his eye made him look a little funny and Eddie had to work hard not to laugh. His nerves for what was to come were starting to creep back in, so the distraction of Dustin's exasperation was surprisingly welcome.
"Something to be dealt with later, Henderson. There's a concert to put on." Eddie kept his expression hard, though he was grateful for this brief moment of normalcy before the shit hit the fan. It was almost like they weren't walking straight into a raging fire.
Despite the circumstance behind his impromptu performance, Eddie was loathe to admit that it was epic all the same. With Dustin on his knee rocking out beside him, the task of distraction took on a shiner texture. Fun was an odd word to apply to a life or death situation, yet nothing else fit. Feeling his fingers fly over the strings in a flawless rendition of a song he'd been working on tirelessly was exemplary - Eddie was certain he'd never had a prouder moment.
The glitz and shine of it was unsurprisingly overshadowed by the arrival of a large swarm of bats circling them that suddenly made Eddie feel like a sitting duck. For all intents and purposes, their portion of the plan was over. As the noises started to get louder against the outside of the trailer, Eddie worried they weren't quite as prepared as they originally realized.
When the squeals of the demobats started to make his eardrums ache, Eddie was certain they were done for. It would make no sense to go through the gate while completely overran by beasts that could do major damage back in their reality. His gut was churning with the rapid pitch of thoughts and ideas whipping through his brain, never mind the adrenaline coursing through his veins. All of the sudden, what sounded like a large storm overtook the trailer.
Eddie closed his eyes, certain they were seconds away from battling for their life when utter silence followed. He was frozen in place, his ears peeled in wait for the other shoe to drop. As the quiet persisted, Eddie got some of the feeling back in his limbs, allowing him to turn around. He and Dustin shared a confused look before the ground beneath them started to shake.
"Get through the gate, Dustin," Eddie said, grabbing onto Dustin's shoulders. "I'll follow you." And while it was the truth, Eddie wasn't stupid enough to think Dustin wouldn't realize he had other plans before that would happen. He tightened his grip, silently trying to drive his point home. There was a tense second before Dustin nodded.
They were seconds away from splitting up when the trailer door banged open and Robin ran through it. She was carrying what looked to be a thick stick with an alcohol soaked rag wrapped around it that was caught on fire; like an old fashioned torch. Nancy and Steve were hot on her tail, running in with panted breaths and scared but triumphant looks in their eyes.
"We need to get the hell out of here," Steve shouted - his point was further driven home by the ground shaking again, this time with more intensity. No one hesitated to run down the hall into Eddie's room to quickly climb up the sheet ladder back where they all belonged. Thankfully, they were all through before his ceiling sealed up with only the slightest scar left behind.
No one spoke for many moments. It took a while for adrenaline to settle and breaths to be caught, for reality to sink in. Everyone was looking everywhere, like none of them could believe that some small part of the madness was over and done with.
It took a surprising amount of time for words to finally break the silence. Dustin was eager to know what exactly happened and once the shock wore off, Nancy was happy to explain. It came down to El being a badass with her jedi mind tricks; she subdued Vecna just long enough for Nancy to further prove her awesomeness with well aimed shoots. And fire - they used lots of fire.
When all was said and done, the resolution left something to be desired, but Eddie was not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. There were still many obstacles to overcome that any amount of success was a win. He made it out with his life after playing the most epic metal concert of his life - how much more could Eddie really ask for?
Except, the threat of dying wasn't keeping the thoughts of that kiss and what it could mean at bay anymore. While it'd been only a little easier to hold them back when life wasn't guaranteed, those persistent wants and ideas existed in the back of Eddie's mind, festering away. His performance, the stellar playing, that was fueled by the desire to contribute and help and maybe, at the end of it all, come out on the other side of things well enough to see something through with Steve. That's probably why Eddie was able to give himself into the music the way he did.
Still, the question of whether Steve reciprocated his feelings remained. Was hours after saving the world the best time to step up and ask something so life changing? Eddie knew the answer was no but the thought of waiting around just to see what happened next didn't seem all that good, either. That sort of unanswered question was nefarious, easily bringing stronger people to their knees. Maybe the small taste of death made him braver than before, or maybe, Eddie was just tired of hesitating, of turning his back when things he wanted were right there before him - reaching out suddenly wasn't the scariest thing in Eddie's world, anymore.
After collecting Dustin, Max, and Ericka from the Creel house, the party sunk into the warmth of Steve's empty place, happy to be home. When the celebrating was done, everyone split up to nurse wounds and get some well needed rest. Eddie waited until all the kids were taken care of before starting his hunt for Steve. It didn't take long for him to literally stumble into the younger boy - Eddie missed the top step leading upstairs and sent himself flying, right into the arms of Steve Harrington.
As he straightened himself up, Eddie tried to formulate the right thing to say that showed gratitude and made him look cool all at once. Though, a soft "thanks" slipped out, instead. His voice was pitched low, like anything louder than a whisper would break up the moment.
Steve's arms tightened around Eddie's middle where they settled in his attempt to keep Eddie upright. He looked contemplative for a second, then the tiniest of smiles overtook his lips. "I think this is becoming a habit, us saving each other."
Eddie was struck by the truth of that simple statement. It'd been so easy, sucking up all the fear in his heart and stepping out onto a thin limb. He didn't hesitate to jump headfirst into the water after Steve got dragged down. It was like second nature to grab the nearest weapon to swing away demobats with. Eddie didn't even bat an eye at the idea of being a distraction. When bigger, more important things were on the line, Steve's life and that of the rest of his friends too, Eddie could do nothing but make a habit out of doing anything to keep them safe.
In the end, Eddie settled with "yeah, maybe" as his answer, because anything else would've opened up the floodgate of emotions that were too big for the space in time they were currently occupying. Eddie's brain only had room for so much and he already felt a little overrun.
Of course, Steve's answering grin and the close proximity of their chests made it difficult to think about anything other than the pulsing need to lean forward and kiss him again. Maybe, after keeping it all in for so long, the feelings couldn't be held back any longer.
"I think I might love you," Eddie said in one long breath, blurting the words out into the open. Since they were already out there, he barreled on. "I think that's why it's so easy to be selfless and heroic when you're around. I'd do anything, Steve, to see you safe."
There was a heavy breath and the shift of feet on the hardwood below them, elongated the small silence following Eddie's confession. Though Steve hadn't dropped his hold or moved away, he hadn't said anything, either. Eddie wanted to stuff his head into the nearest wall - now that the world wasn't ending, maybe the previous bravery guiding his actions was too much for the return of a slower reality.
"So that's what that kiss was about," Steve finally said. His voice was laced with realization, like a light bulb had lit up brightly above his head. When their eyes met then, Eddie saw clarity and what might've been the beginnings of happiness in Steve's gaze. He looked at Eddie like one would a finished puzzle - triumphant and battle worn and glad to see all of the pieces finally fitting together.
"Would it be okay if I might love you back?" Steve asked, voicing his question as their faces drifted closer and closer. By the time the last word settled into the air between them, their lips were brushing, ghosting together in the smallest semblance of a kiss. It was too much and not enough and all Eddie wanted.
With one small shift forward, Eddie closed that final gap, kissing Steve softly in answer. Their lips lingered and fused, combining in a way that spoke of a new start and the possibility of forever that wasn't there before. This time, when Eddie drew away, he wasn't afraid to let Steve go. He knew, after fighting together and protecting each other that Steve, as long as he could, would always come back to him.
No matter the cost.

@astradecays ( desmond ) asked : ❝  i’m a master of cuddling, too - got a black belt, multiple disciplines.  ❞
Tumblr media
if you'd told her that the bartender she'd felt so guilty about dragging out to her rv to fix the thing up would end up being the best thing that had happened to her since she left home , she would've asked you what bartender you were talking about because surely beverly marsh hadn't let anyone in to her own little world . when she'd left derry , it had just been to escape her father , get away from every goddamn thing in that stupid little town that held her back . she'd had no intention of finding someone , of falling for someone , of traveling with anyone . and yet ... something about desmond had tore her entire guard down when she'd least expected it and she couldn't even begin to complain about it .
brows raise as she fumbles with the knobs on the generator . she should have listened when she'd been told they were running on empty . she'd been so sure they could get through one more night , make the tips stretch a little more . but ... now they're stuck with a cold bed on an abnormally cold night and she's got no one but herself to blame . even if she refuses to say it outloud . there's a part of her that fully expects desmond to give her some sort of i told you so speech , so it catches her off guard when the silence is broken by the pep in his voice .
a soft laugh as she lets herself fall onto her butt , hands folding in her lap as she looks up at him with a grin , red tresses cascading across her face as she shakes her head . ❝ a black belt in cuddling ? is that to go with the red belt in silver linings ? i sure could learn a thing or two about looking on the bright side of shit . ❞

Another PCT Speed Record Breaks
An excerpt from Grayson Haver Currin's story in Outside online about Josh Perry's self-supported PCT speed record.
Tumblr media
An enduring speed record on the Pacific Crest Trail has fallen. On Sunday, August 7, at 8:56 P.M., Josh Perry—a 27-year-old British hiker —reached the Canadian border, finishing the 2,650-mile trail just 55 days, 16 hours, and 54 minutes after he departed the trail’s starting point near the U.S. border with Mexico.
His staggering time cut the 2009 male self-supported record of Scott Williamson by nearly ten days; Perry shaved five days off the overall self-supported record famously set by Heather “Anish” Anderson in 2013, a feat so impressive it survived a decade of near-constant attempts to beat it. (His record has not been officially verified, but an official at Fastest Known Times said Tuesday she expected it to be.) Anderson’s achievement, which established her as one of the world’s most wowing endurance athletes, is the very thing that lured Perry into long-distance hiking.
Perhaps most impressive of all, Perry finished within just four days of the supported record set last year by Timothy Olson, the Adidas-sponsored ultra-running superstar who slept most nights in a roadside RV with hot meals and sports massages. Being self-supported, Perry mailed himself shoes and supplies in advance and hiked into towns to pick them up. He did not get in a car to reach supplies or accept substantial assistance until Tuesday afternoon, when he emerged from the woods of northern Washington with a new record to his name. Besting Olson’s Fastest Known Time (FKT) was Perry’s true motivation.
“It is incredibly bittersweet, heartbreaking, to put so much effort into something for six weeks and come up short,” Perry said Tuesday afternoon from a hiker hostel in Mazama, the idyllic Cascade outpost closest to the finish. “This time doesn’t represent the best of what I can do. It represents the best of what I could do under the circumstances.”
Perry is talking about the reality of record-setting and thru-hiking at large in this era of escalated wildfires. He cruised for the PCT’s first 1,700 miles in California, finishing the state faster than any other recorded hiker—34 days, 3 hours, and 59 minutes. He shuffled or jogged many of those miles, setting a pace so aggressive he often slept six hours a night. (Those attempting FKTs sometimes deal with only two hours of sleep for days at a time.)
But in Oregon, a trail closure that remains in effect since the 2020 Lionshead Fire near Mount Jefferson forced Perry to find an alternate route that approximated the PCT. He followed badly overgrown trails on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, and the brush was so thick that he spent seven hours bushwhacking for seven miles. He fell on wet rock scrambles, bruised ribs when he collided into a tree, and suffered a heatstroke after finally walking along a road in temperatures well above 100 degrees. Delirious and dehydrated, he began vomiting and defecating on himself. His condition was so bad that he momentarily decided to quit.
Perry’s decision to get on the PCT at all this year represents a remarkable personal commitment to keep going. In 2019, after setting a self-supported FKT on Vermont’s Long Trail, and before doing the same on the Arizona Trail, Perry made a southbound run on the PCT record. After clocking 49 miles per day for about 1,000 miles, he was stung by a wasp, unaware that he was allergic. Three days later, he collapsed on trail and had to be carried into town by three other hikers.
And then, just last year, Perry had a mental breakdown related to money that resulted in a suicide attempt. He survived, and as he considered the options for his future, he soon resolved to try for the record again this year. “Long-distance hiking is what I have done my entire adult life,” said Perry, who was born in Birmingham, moved around a lot as a child, and has spent about half of each year on trail since turning 18. “So when it came down to decide what I was going to do this year, the healthiest option was to go for a hike.”
Tumblr media
Perry had big adventures planned for the end of his PCT hike—running the Colorado Trail, for instance, and hiking in the Olympic and Cascade mountains. But on Tuesday afternoon, he said those likely wouldn’t happen. He was simply delighted to have cleaned his cut, cracked feet completely for the first time in two weeks. He recounted a litany of overuse injuries, including muscles afflicted with tendinitis, and webs of bruises from exhausted falls in Washington state. For several hundred miles, he even carried a sealed role of duct tape to bind his right quadricep together should it tear, as he feared it might. “I cannot imagine putting a pair of climbing shoes on my feet right now,” he said.

The Mothership
I step out of my Mom’s house in Port Isabel, Texas. The air feels like a weighted blanket of heat and vapor. Her massive garden rises all around, twelve to twenty feet high, with soaring banana leaves, enormous monstera, and cascading bougainvillea. Like I’ve seen her do my whole life, she has culled from the earth an incredible bounty - full of layers and shapes and color.
Mexican-flag colored string lights hang down from the driveway. I walk past the garden, onto the street, and toward the water - two blocks away. The residential neighborhood is quiet, with a few kids’ toys laid about on grass lawns. Small brick houses with whirring AC units, the occasional dog behind a fence.
The water is an inlet, connected to the bay side of South Padre Island and several miles away from the breaking waves of the Gulf. The water appears thick and green and dark. Along the edge is a seafood wholesaler in a low slung building. Below that is a shrimping boat with a large man at the wheel. He seems pleased and smiles up at me as if to say, “wanna go?”
I take a seat at the picnic table and strain my eyes to the Southern horizon. I know where to look, based on prior visits. There, a couple miles away, I can see a large building next to some narrower structures: SpaceX. Specifically, SpaceX Starbase – where dozens of engineers build massive, next-generation rockets for launching cargo and people on missions to the moon and Mars.
Starbase is so close to Mexico, that I imagine employees could walk down to the US-Mexico border and sit on the banks of the Rio Grande. I doubt anybody does though. Grassy marshlands, clouds of mosquitoes, and herds of prickly pear... you’d have to be looking for a fight.
During my visits here, I’ve heard the locals talk about SpaceX. The sounds they hear when tests are being conducted. The times when they might see a rocket launch. Or the talk of real estate prices and rent hikes. At the edge of town, next to the Walmart and an RV park, a billboard blares, “Beach & Beyond!” with a picture of a rocket ship next to some beach towels.
It’s interesting to think about what people build. The size, the scope, the purpose. There is that which we don’t have – and we reach to. The moon, the stars, the planets. And there is that which we have – and quickly leave behind. The earth, the water, the plants.
While it’s unlikely we will colonize a new planet in our lifetime, the one we have is in dire need of preservation. Imagine what might happen if the amount of money, technology, and innovation that is going into SpaceX were directed at something like, say, fresh drinking water. Just two states away, 150,000 residents of Jackson, Mississippi are in crisis.
At the end of my trip, I arrange for a local taxi to take me to the airport. Before dawn, a woman driver pulls up in a minivan. She’s speaking both Spanish and English into the radio, tracking dispatches. Afterwards, we get to talking. She recognized my Mom’s house, and guessed that I was her daughter. “Your Mom,” she says… “One time she gave me a beautiful plant. No flowers, just beautiful leaves,” and she made the shape of the leaves with her hands.
As we drive through the dark toward the airport, I think about my Mom’s garden – growing, reaching upward to the stars. What miracle of life is this? Right here on Earth. The Mothership.
*** 🌿Post-script for the gardeners. My Mom’s favorite TX plants include:
Variegated Shell Ginger or Alpinia Zerumbet Varigata
Bougainvillea
Liriope Big Blue
Delonix Regia or Royal Poinciana
Rhapsody Excelsior or Lady Palm
Canna, Black Knight
Various ferns
Birdsnest Anthurium
Banana
Pseudo-bombax or Shaving Brush Tree
Zamia Furfuracae or Cardboard Palm

Day 211: Saturday July 30, 2022 - “Wild-ish Wedding”
On a beautiful Bend bluff, covered in Black Eyed Susans and green grass, in their own backyard, looking out Westward to Coastal Cascades, and a setting sun in a grey Pacific Northwest sky (and beside their homemade pool),  Little Jess (beautiful in her dress) said “I do” to her partner Rick after some incredible vows, and eccentric authentic Italian officiating.  Its was a beautiful scene, taken in as I bopped a sleepy teething William from afar.   He observed most of his first wedding from the onsite vegetable garden, and cried when the Bride wouldnt hand over her bouquet. He was fascinated by the scene before the post ceremony nap that he enjoyed from the newlyweds couch, and we enjoyed on facetime from our reception dining table; all three of us coordinated in Green.
This homemade wedding, was the most incredibly well done and classy event.  So memorable to be here and see this special place, and experience a truly festival styled wedding.  The birth of great event venue!  The most unique we’ve ever seen - which fits this adventurous couple to a perfect T.   We shared our dinner table with the Cordovas and the Solbergs. Mojitos and Margs were served for the pre-ceremony bar, but the reception dinner was all about the French Wine and my little fancy tasting parlor glass!  Hard to beat a wedding meal thats being prepared in Grandma’s Kitchen steps away from where its served!  We ate all weekend (Enchiladas and Pig Roast) but tonight’s meal of meats and desserts was the best meal of the year.    And of course, right on que as the sunset behind them we had a good range of toasts, itinerant stories of the world working, and finally sunset tequila shots as the sun dipped behind The Sisters.  Let the party begin!
Oh but wait - not only is it William’s first wedding....it is also our first wedding as parents!  We’re grown up now!  As darkness set on us, and the live band and lights lit up the dance floor, I realized that someone sometime soon was going to have to go to bed with the baby and that someone should be me so that AC could enjoy this special night with her special friends.  After letting Boo Boo off the hook, with his ear protection to match his shirt, it was time to take this bow-tie clad baby boy to bed.  I laid next time in our RV as he snoozed, and he cuddled up to me.  It was the sweetest feeling - I laid there in bed awake enjoying the (finally) cool Oregon air, hearing the band play across the way like a radio playing off in the background of my thoughts.  I thought about love and marriage and ever after - about the beauty of this sleeping boy finding comfort in me after a big day; about how much nicer all of that is than simply being out there drinking the night away without a care or a responsibility.  A shift.   This opportunity to choose love over a good time-  Im growing up - becoming a Dad.  Weddings are special, and I appreciated this one more, for the opportunity to look at myself in that mirror on what will no doubt be a memorable day.

Day 5 Sunday
Las Vegas to Williams, Arizona
A transition day in more ways than one. We started the day by attending Palm Sunday mass at the Guardian Angel Cathedral, just off the Vegas Strip. Then we were back on the road again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a shock when I received my confirmation email from Grand Canyon Railroad and RV park and I discovered I had mistakingly made the reservations for the wrong days. Panic!
Since I have already booked every night but one until April 8th, it would have a cascading effect on the entire trip. Fortunately, although it took a bit of doing, I got both the campsite and train reservations changed to the correct days. Phew!
Tumblr media
The three hour drive to Williams took over four since we hit some traffic and then a serious hail and lightening storm just outside of Williams. We got to the RV park and discovered that we were back in winter! Cold temps and snow topped with hail covered the area. Apparently we have left spring behind and are back into winter. Glad I brought my parka!
