Yo thanks for doing the fluffy romance hcs they're so fricking cute!!!! May I request err something Arven x M!Reader? (Presumably Florian so we've got the whole Titans and area zero dynamics?) Where Arven gets jealous of Kieran and Carmine's crush on his boyfriend, not to mention hearing Drayton asked him on a date?😩 I'm just starved for gay content lol
I shall quench your gay cravings. Apologies this took so long to get to I love Arven and I'm kicking myself in the teeth for not giving him the spotlight sooner
Pokémon Scarlett and Violet DLC Spoilers ahead!
When you finally returned from the exchange program; Arven was excited to hear about your journey. Your new friends however were an unexpected arrival and a not so welcomed introduction.
Warnings: Fluff, Jealousy, slightly possessive behaviour
SPOILER WARNING: Mild Spoilers for the Main SV game and both DLC Stories and characters.
Tumblr media
Pokémon Headcanons | Arven x M.Reader (Jealousy)
When you first told Arven about the exchange trip and how you’d been selected for it cuz Pokémon plot, he wasn’t too happy. Not because you got the place; he was overjoyed for you in that regard. What upset him was the fact he couldn’t go with you.
You weren’t able to contact him very much during the trip, service in the terrarium is HORRIBLE. So that only made his longing for you even more demanding. And you felt exactly the same way, missing your boyfriend even more everyday.
But finally after what felt like forever, the two of you were finally reunited. He practically bear hugged you when he saw you, almost crushing your bones in excitement. All you could do was laugh as Arven clung to you like a squirrel to an acorn.
If it wasn’t for your extra company, he would have held you all the way back to the academy. Carry you if you’d let him. Dude was craving your attention after all this time. But when he saw who was accompanying you, a switch clicked within him. You’d told Arven about Kieran and Carmen during your brief trip to Kitagami, but he’d never met them before. And to say he didn’t like them would be an understatement.
Carmen wasn’t too big on his nerves, he wasn't a huge fan with how often she dragged away your attention, always wanting your opinion on her battling techniques; what to improve on etcetera. She reminded him of Nemona in that sense. But Kieran, that was a different story.
The way he was always standing behind you, looking at your expressions to see how you felt. Arven could see the way Kieran was always wanting your validation and it drove him in the wall. But what really grinded Arven the wrong way, was how often Kieran would grab your hand to show you something he’d spotted.
Whenever Kieran would do this, Arven would grab you by the waist or shoulder and pull you to his side, glaring at Kieran with an almost murderous intent. Grated Arven can’t hurt a Cutiefly, but that isn’t going to stop him from making a point.
“Hands off my boyfriend purple.” or “Don’t try and steal him now” Were the most common phrases you’d hear from Arven when Kieran would drag you away.
If Carmen was the one taking your attention away, Arven would simply stand there irritated, sending the odd glare towards Carmen till she took the hint, that Arven wasn’t keen on sharing his boyfriend with a stranger.
Don’t try to convince him to like them. Regardless of what you’ve told him about them, he won’t trust them for a while. Hell it took the entire trip to Area Zero to even remotely start to like Nemona, so Carmen and Kieran are going to take a lot of effort to like.
But when Arven finally DOES come around, his clinginess and possessiveness over you lessens dramatically, he is a lot more comfortable around them and even starts to hang out with Kieran away from you and Carmen.
However, during one of those hangouts. Kieran accidently let slip that Drayton, a kid from his school, asked you out on a date, multiple times actually. Most were jokes and you always turned them down. And that made Arven’s blood boil.
He trusts you fully and completely, you're his boyfriend and he loves you. But knowing someone was chasing after your heart, the same heart he holds the key for, it drove him crazy. You didn’t sleep alone that night, and you also made it clear to Arven that you love him and only him.

A Carmen/Julia Submission Note:
Carmen literally gave Julia a bouquet of red roses once. That’s the one that sounds the gayest with a short explanation, but just watch any clips of them together honestly
A Rin/Haruka Submission Note:
Haha, what if I was your rival even if it would make more objective sense for us to be on the same side, and we emotionally affected each other in a deep and visceral way that no one else could, and we thought about each other all the time despite the fact that we supposedly have no meaningful relationship, and then we went on an impulsive trip to Australia and got stuck in a hotel room where there was Only One Bed, lol, jk, unless.

Choices Book Tracker / MC Masterlist
Tumblr media
I decided to make a list to keep track of what books I've read and my MCs! (Because I keep forgetting half their names lol). Yes, this took ages to edit, but I had a lot of fun lol 😊
I have used pride flag icons in the edits, but there is a text version at the end too. Will likely update in chronological order of book release instead of alphabetical as new books come out.

I'm very curious about any more in depth thoughts you have on It Came From The Closet! It's been on my radar and I'd been planning to check it out soon as my next read, and this is the first opinion I've seen on it that isn't part of what feels like marketing reviews almost. Is it the analysis of the horror movies and themes that feels off or the way the essays are written? I'm a huge horror fan and I've definitely seen a...few queer horror takes that felt either like reaches or just "off" to me, but it's always hard to put my finger on it
i’ve only read the first few essays so it’s entirely possible that the volume will improve from here on out (though i … haven’t gotten my hopes up), but my impression so far is that it’s a series of schlocky, surface-level analyses providing a veneer of pop talking points around “horror” and “queerness” over what are often frankly uninteresting personal essays. v little insight and v little desire to bring anything new to the table; frankly, v little interest in the films they purport to be writing on beyond shallow rhetorical vehicles for personal reflection. my patience for The Personal Essay is vvv low at the best of times, but like, i can appreciate a work from which i can glean some compelling insights and articulate a thoughtful response. and, god, none of these pieces have crossed that hurdle so far.
like, if it’s not a long string of appeals to buzzwords like “queerbaiting” and “bury your gays” or v poorly substantiated appeals to "subversion" then it's incorrectly defined “reparative reading” or one writer citing that stupid mary oliver soft animal of your body whatever line out of literally nowhere. it’s just not insightful or imaginative. at its worst it does just read like an annoying tumblr post circa 2017. carmen maria machado writes an essay on jennifer’s body as articulating something essential to her bisexuality such that efforts to talk about the way in which it marketed itself via appealing to the homophobic cultural currency of teen lesbian eroticism somehow constitutes “gatekeeping.” this is not compelling or original critical writing, people.
almost every essay seems to fall back on the same base claim: that what makes horror horrifying relies on a currency of alterity which discursively constructs the “other” and that queer people can & will identify with the “other”—the monster in the horror film—in order to make sense of themselves & overturn the hegemony that the film may well seek to affirm. cool, awesome—this is not new analysis. i would not expect this kind of thing to be churned out in a book published in 2022; we know this already. i worry that overleaning into this idea of a “reclamation” of sorts a) risks forfeiting the language we have available to us to actually talk about the sort of bigotry which can fuel these kinds of stories; how many people talk about le fanu’s carmilla as a stunning depiction of erotic lesbian vampires and lose sight of its having been a v homophobic, colonialist text in their doing so?; and b) neglects the tradition of horror within alterity; horror being made not out of a conservative ethos that we seek to critically remould into a kind of limp simulacrum of a “radical” one, but one born out of a desire to tell a story against heteronormative social imaginaries in the first place. it’s all well and good to identify with regan from the exorcist and cite your poor understanding of reparative readings (not a critical framework i subscribe to anyway, but like, at least get it right?) in doing so, but do we have to keep limiting our discourse to this back-and-forth about whether or not we can salvage obviously homophobic/misogynistic/ableist/racist stories forever? lol. i watched Hellraiser for the first time the other day and that was queer horror that could be met with on far more compelling terms than whatever all this is.

24 for 24
Thank you @read-and-write- and @myheartalivewrites for tagging me! One of my resolutions is to read more books bc last year I finished a whopping one (1) book! My goal for several years now has been 26 books (one every two weeks) and I want to try a few different things to hopefully meet it because I have progressively been getting worse at meeting my goal!
So here are some books that have been rotting on my bedside bookshelf or in my sprawling TBR in no particular order
Freedom is a Constant Struggle - Angela Y. Davis (50% done already!)
Bad Mormon - Heather Gay (~25%)
Parable of the Sower - Octavia Butler
Mexican Gothic (reread in Spanish)(~10%) - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Severance - Ling Ma
Cantoras - Carolina de Robertis
Crying in H Mart - Michelle Zauner
Hacienda - Isabel Cañas
Open Water - Caleb Azumah Nelson
In the Dream House - Carmen Maria Machado
Jesus and John Wayne - Kristin Kobes Du Mez OR White Too Long - Robert Jones
Silver, Sword, and Stone - Marie Arana OR Open Veins of Latin America - Eduardo Galeano
Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat - Samin Nosrat
They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us - Harif Abdurraqib (This year's designated travel book!)
Zami: A New Spelling of My Name - Audre Lorde
Passing - Nella Larsen
Frankenstein (reread) - Mary Shelley
Pride and Prejudice OR Emma - Jane Austen
Darius the Great is Not Okay - Adib Khorram
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe - Fannie Flagg
Tipping the Velvet OR The Paying Guests OR Fingersmith - Sarah Waters (I got copies of the first 2 for a STEAL at a used bookstore, and one of them had a sticky note covered in cat hair - really felt like a passing of the wlw torch lol)
Fun Home - Alison Bechdel
Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi
Maus 1 & 2 - Art Spiegelman
No pressure tagging because this is pretty extensive and this is a list I like to make at the beginning of the year anyway (although usually a shortlist of 10 books) but I'm curious about y'all's prospective reads if you decide to share! Part of the fun of reading for me is hearing all about new books! @happiness-of-the-pursuit @cha-melodius @orchidscript @inexplicablymine @indomitable-love @affectionatelyrs @ssmtskw @dumbpeachjuice @daisymae-12 @cultofsappho @suseagull04 @firenati0n @kiwiana-writes

I have to say as a non kid/teen fan with more life experience, I pegged Noah as gay for a long time. I remember being so surprised when I wandered into comment sections on tiktok and realized most of his young girl fandom thought he was fully heterosexual and was like… oh sweet summer children. I really try to not stereotype but I felt like even if he never publicly came out, it was very obvious and was more surprised by how he came out then the fact he did. I feel that same way for Finn. I always got the same not straight vibe from Finn, even more when he was younger. (and I don’t mean this in a shippy way because I don’t ship real people, but part of it was also the way finn and noah were with each other pre season 3 that didn’t help the allegations lol like the vibes between them were nothing like the bros being bros vibes between finn and caleb/gaten so maybe there was some cosmic understanding of “we are the same” going on) Only time may tell but if I am right then Carmen Cuba saw it too and knew what she was doing.
If everyone here is right, Carmen Cuba is a wizard/psychic fr.

Punch out wii but make it pride
Or gender and sexuality headcanons for the lads cause it's pride month lmao.
{Note that these are not my only headcanons, just the ones I stick to most often. Yes, i have imagined everyone as trans already :P. }
Glass Joe:
Bi and Trans.
Struggled with a lot of internalized biphobia after his transition and is only now accepting his attraction to men as a man.
Very happy with his transition and is currently considering bottom surgery. However, the endocrinologist that works with the WVBA is abusive and refuses to dose his T properly. This has left him stuck not only without his hormones for transition, but left him very sick due to his naturally low T levels. No one knows he's trans and he has no idea.
Von Kaiser:
He's pretty out of the loop when it comes to labels so he doesn't use them. The best label for him would probably be Grey Aroace, with no gender preference when he has had crushes.
As for his gender, he generally considers himself cis but is very relaxed about being called she/her and interacting with femininity, which has made him question himself a little.
Disco Kid:
Gay gay homosexual gay. He is, in no uncertain terms, not attracted to women. There was a short time where he tried to be attracted to women, until his uncle came out to him and made him feel safe not to be in the closet anymore.
Very feminine and gnc, preferring to be called a 'queen' above all else in relation to his gender. Out and proud (He can't really hide it, lol) and will beat the shit out of anyone who says anything negative about him or the other boxers queerness.
King Hippo:
Aroace king with no desire for anything outside of friendships and family relationships.
Hippo Island culture has 4 genders based on social roles. There's male, female, a third gender that encompasses a mixture of both, and a fourth that does neither. People of this fourth gender not only have the most flexibility in what they can choose to do, but are also free to practice most cultural taboos freely. Hippo is apart of the 4th gender, being comfortable with being labeled as trans and nonbinary, though says he's male to American media. He isn't agender- his gender is part of a social class and should not be conflated with anything else.
Piston Hondo:
As stated in my first headcanon post about him, he finds hard labels restricting. Depending on how he feels on a given day and who he's talking to, he'll call himself queer, gay, bi, and pan- sometimes all within the same conversation. He's very cool with open relationships and is currently enjoying a friends-with-benefits situation with Don and Carmen.
He's dipped his toes in femininity, but it wasn't for him so now he's cis+. He does however, choose to use feminine pronouns in Japanese because he prefers the way they sound.
Bear Hugger:
He's bi with a slight preference for men. He adores his wife, but is always a little heartbroken to tell all the pretty men who swarm him at gay events that he's married.
Cis but not an asshole about it. Very supportive and protective of his trans friends even if he isn't the most knowledgeable about some things.
Great Tiger:
Demi romantic/sexual and only attracted to men when he has developed crushes.
He's been exploring his gender for a little while now and still isn't sure if he's genderfluid or not so he sticks to calling himself gnc.
Don Flamenco:
Struggled with accepting his bisexuality due to his religion for years. When he finally did though, he was much happier and opened his relationship with Carmen. They're cool with just about everything except they have 1 rule- their romantic love is only for each other. Don's the type to fall in love easily, so this was hard on him. However, Carmen is his one and only and has stayed true to her for many years.
Currently, Don is denying his complicated gender feelings. He began suspecting he was bigender but quickly shut it down and has since been trying (And failing) to stuff it down with machismo.
Aran Ryan:
Bi and a trans man.
He comes from a long line of bisexuals, to the point where his parents/grandparents believe everyone is at least a little attracted to multiple genders. Aran has always been open to dating anyone and has no preferences whatsoever, aside from not dating cis people.
His parents and grandma initially rejected him when he came out as trans. After Aran ran away and came back a few years later, they mended their relationships and are now fully supportive. He did some not-so-legal stuff to transition and still gets his T off the black market due to lacking proper medical records and distrusting doctors. The only part of his transition he regrets is getting top surgery. He felt he had no choice in the matter and it put a lot of financial, emotional, and physical strain on him. He's stealth at the moment but wouldn't mind people he trusts knowing.
Soda Popinski:
Gay gay homosexual gay. Due to the Russian government's involvement in his career he can't safely come out. His mother and sister know and are very supportive of him.
He's had some funny gender feelings for a while now, but cannot explore his gender due to the government on his back.
Bald Bull:
Bi but closeted. He knows coming out would cause a shitstorm in the press and hides his sexuality as much as possible. He doesn't know how supportive his family would be were he to come out to them but frankly doesn't care enough about them to do so.
Cis and very respectful of trans people. He used to be more close minded out of confusion more than anything, but has since opened up and become a strong supporter of trans rights both in the US and Turkey.
Super Macho Man:
Aro and pan.
He's uninterested in romance whatsoever and trying to bring up his romantic life will only upset him. He's got a huge polycule of fuckbuddies where everyone is very happy (Macho most of all).
Cis+. He tried being trans for a short time, asking his friends to call him a different name and pronouns but left the situation more affirmed of his gender than anything.
Mr. Sandman:
Switches between calling himself bi and pan, finding both labels useful and important to him in their own ways.
Very gnc in daily life and has labelled himself nonbinary before. Currently considers himself cis as he finds being nonbinary isn't for him.
Little Mac:
Straight and trans.
He figured out his gender young and transitioned as soon as he turned 8- something he and Doc had to fight for hard. He's currently getting back on T after being assured the WVBA would cover it and let him compete on it. He doesn't do well in surgery so can't get top surgery, but he doesn't mind as he enjoys binders and compression tops a lot.
Though he's had crushes on guys, his love for women is more common and intense so he just calls himself straight.
Doc Louis:
Bi but refuses to call himself that. He thinks his relationships with me don't count as they were all either very short or former roommates. He really doesn't think he deserves to call himself bi.
Cis and very supportive of Mac's transition. All he wants is his baby to be happy and he'll accept whatever Mac wants to do for himself.

Due to request…Michelle Zuria is next!
Requested by:
Tumblr media
Here’s Michelle:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s go! Got some angst mixed in there too.
1 - she gets as much sleep as possible. The least she has slept is 4 hours though.
2 - she likes pearls and seashells! She finds them really pretty, and she has a seashell necklace laying around somewhere.
3 - her hair gets tangled easily, and she doesn’t really like it-
4 - she doesn’t do a lot of makeup besides lipstick, mascara, eyeshadow and some blush. She doesn’t like spending too much time on her makeup.
5 - people often comment that she looks cold and empty sometimes. She doesn’t exactly like those comments, but she doesn’t do anything to stop people from saying them cause she knows they won’t stop.
6 - she really likes kids…But she’s really scared that she’ll make them upset. So she keeps her distance from them.
7 - there was a time she considered adopting a child. But knowing how busy she could get as a lawyer, she decided not to risk neglecting the child and didn’t adopt a child-
8 - mhm…She looks like a bisexual (lol I’m making all your favourite characters gay-)
9 - her favourite fruit is watermelon. She likes it a lot since it can be quite sweet, and is really refreshing.
10 - she doesn’t really like sweets, but she eats them sometimes. She prefers salty over sweet food.
11 - has a soft sport for Elliot. Part of her pities that he faced so much danger, and she sees Elliot as a son at some points of time. Does she tell Elliot this? No. Because she knows Elliot probably only sees her as a work partner, and she doesn’t want to make things between them uncomfortable by saying she sees him as a son sometimes.
12 - She began smiling a lot more after working with the Bureau. She actually had a lot of fun with them. The adventures they had, the interrogations and crimes they solved. She loves the Bureau dearly, and sees them as a family…
13 - she doesn’t have many friends- she has people she talks to because of work, but she won’t see them as friends. (Yeah this is before she joined the Bureau)
14 - wakes up early everyday. Latest she gets up is 9am.
15 - she’s really soft-hearted and empathetic, but she puts up a wall because of work. She doesn’t let her emotions interfere with her work and sees it as extremely unprofessional. This makes some people see her as uncaring though.
16 - she likes to sing. She finds singing really fun, but only sings to herself or hums. She won’t sing in front of others- but she sang in front of the Bureau once though.
17 - rough childhood. Her parents were rarely home, and she was often left alone with her nanny- and if you played season 3 you’ll see why her childhood was rough…
18 - she took therapy with Marina about her childhood to recover. She understood that her childhood was traumatising and that she needed help, so she got it the moment she was close enough with the Bureau.
19 - she hates the fact she is in SOMBRA. She hates knowing what happens to children there…And it makes her feel awful.
20 - she has nice hands, but her hands are always really cold..
21 - the multi coloured necklaces she wears are a gift from the Bureau! They got it for her as a welcome gift!
22 - Michelle got along with Elliot the best when she first joined. Then Marina…Carmen, Armand, Angela, Lars, Jack, Jonah…Ingrid and Chief Ripley have nothing to say about her really.
23 - chats with Armand in her free time. She enjoys hearing him talk about history, and plays chess with him sometimes.
24 - she’s trying to learn a new language and is being taught by Armand. She makes mistakes every now and then when trying to speak German, but Armand helps her out by writing the pronunciation on a piece of paper for her to practice.
25 - Michelle usually stays indoors. She’s not the biggest fan of going out, and her comfort is in her home.
26 - she moves a lot when she’s trying to sleep- she’s always tossing and turning and it takes at least an hour for her to fall asleep.
That’s all for now- might be a part 2

i love that mac's stupidity thruout the show only ADDS to dennis getting blackout drunk in s1e1 trying to explain some 3-step tequila limeback thing to him or w/e. on a first watch one might think "there's no way dennis thinks mac's actually that dumb", but this is the guy who's seen mac try to use his dave & busters power card at NUMEROUS TGI fridays and yet still doesn't get it. anything is possible with this man edit: also since writing this post and accidentally saving 2 drafts like a dumbass AGH, my eyes have been opened 2 how gay macdennis are even in s1 lol. dennis prolly such a prick to carmen cus dennis wants mac to stay with him!! so yeah it just keeps adding to the experience of s1

Shipper Tag Game
I was tagged by @foralleternityidiot! Thank you!
1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore? Christian/Sean from Nip/Tuck. Letting them go was the first step in me trying to free myself from the demon that is Ryan Murphy and his shows.
2. Which ship would you consider your first one? Eric/Jack from Boy Meets World. I shipped them before I even knew what shipping was. You couldn't tell me shit about them and you still can't. They were, are, and always will be in love. You will never change my mind.
3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple? So I didn't get into fic until WAY late, like 2008. Which is weird cause I was on message boards and in so many LJ comms, but I just didn't read it. Keeping that in mind, it was Phlochte. I'm not proud but I'm not as embarrassed as I should be. If you knew anything about those two back then, you'd get it okay. lol
4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over? I don't actually. I still don't seek out fanart, so I'm not surprised I don't remember the first one I saw.
5. Did you ever get into ship discourse? I still have anti-delena and anti-stydia tags on old posts on this account sooo...lol. But I was never in the inbox, messages, comments, or posts of people who actually liked those ships! People just came to me to fight when I would post my hate posts on my own account.
6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently? The previous answer answers that, lol. But I don't have any currently. I've hit the point where if I love a ship that's not happening and/or I hate the main pairing, I tend to just peace out. I only ever had NOTPs cause I wouldn't quit shows, but now I'll drop them. I keep up with my faves through gifsets with no need to actually watch the show.
7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read? WangXian. I finished the show in four days and read all five books in five days. I have been OBSESSED for like a month.
8. Currently, do you have any OTPs? I will never not have OTPs, lol. Current: CaptainKeen, CharlieBabe, NorthSonic, KhemThongthai, WangXian, Buddie All time favorites: Stelena, Scallison, Matt/Elektra, Amy/Rory, Ian/Mickey, Spashley, TeamWin, PalmNueng, PrapaiSky, Brittana, Pacey/Joey, DeanCas, Graham/Megan, Amy/Lucy Diamond, Webgott
9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together? Of course. I have more noncanon ships than canon since gay ships really just weren't happening back in the day. I also have several ships that got together but broke up, which I think also answers this question. The biggest will always be Shane/Carmen. It's been 18 years since Shane left Carmen at the altar and I'm still mad.
10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting? I'm watching Playboyy and I didn't give a shit about AobPuen and I didn't really care about PromNont but now I'm invested in them both. AobPuen got me in literally one episode. PromNont became intriguing when Prom gave Nont the gun and then it's just built from there.
11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over? I watched and loved Love Syndrome III in 2023 so obviously I have hella ships from the past that would get me cancelled. I regret nothing.
12. What was your favorite crack ship? I honestly think I've only ever had one crack ship and that was ChanBig and it went from laughing online to "I am fully pretending this was actually happening and Chan and Big are fucking in the sky now, thank you, god bless" in record time.
13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of? This isn't a fair question since a lot of my ships just don't have fic written about them. But I'm currently all up in WangXian fic.
14. What most of your ships usually have in common? I tend to like ships that are ~unhealthy~ ~toxic~ and ~problematic~. No regerts.
15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship? Just not talking to each other. I don't need them to agree, sometimes even on anything, but they have to talk. I don't care if they yell, fight, punch each other, whatever, as long as they talk. I don't like miscommunication because of that either. Because if you're actually talking, there's not miscommunication.
Tagging the last five people in my notifications: @theflagscene, @loudspeakeer, @beaucadeau, @bunnakit, @deepbutdazzlingdarkness Feel free to do it or not, no pressure! It's all for fun! <3

SORRY THAT LAST ASK WAS EVIL here's a nice one what are some of your favourite memories from this year!!
LOL thank you
this got long so here's a read more
-goes w/out saying but spending 5 months travelling and cycling around europe was so cool. my fav bit was a month in italy -- particularly a workaway involving staying in a beautiful umbrian farmstead with a gaggle of gay men, so much cooking and cocktails and basking beneath the wisteria, walks thru medieval hilltop villages surrounded by golden meadows.. travelling solo is nice but i'm very much an extrovert and i felt so touched by the love and friendship i experienced here. i still talk to my boys most days. -i visited one of my best mates in cyprus and it was so fun i accidentally stayed for a whole month. loads of nature hikes, festivals, gigs, exploring abandoned cities, snorkelling in oceans so deep and blue and ancient. -later we flew to england to do brighton pride (hooked up with a lovely irish lass 😳) & visit some more expat uni pals. we went on a road trip afterwards in devon/cornwall and it was so beautiful but again the company was the main thing; i spend the whole time laughing til it hurt
-actually that reminds me of a random cute "small world" moment. on the bus from venice to rome, i saw a girl next to me reading the same book. we got chatting and it turned out she was going to brighton pride as well. we decided to meet up there, but everyone's phone service was jammed and we couldn't find each other!! so i gave up. a couple days later, i was boarding the train to london when i heard... "ASIA!!???" and it was her!!!!!!
-i cut my intercontinental cycle trip short cos i got into the final selection for an antarctica job and needed to be in the uk for the interview. as such i explored the scottish isles. my fav part was staying at a victorian manor in inverness owned by a witch who looked like stevie nicks and was hosting the scottish opera for the week. they invited me for wine and ghost stories by the fireplace and ending up giving me a ticket to the opera which was sooo silly but sweet!! so i saw carmen for free and gifted them some nice tesco roses and wine in return -i lost my phone in corfu but i couldnt be mad cos it was so fun. i went to a BEAUTIFUL grotto to snorkel which ended up being like a mamma mia beach bar. i was drinking a pina colada the size of my head when two aussie girls came over and said "do you mind if we smoke here" and i said "no go ahead" envisioning a cigarette but it ended up being an ENORMOUS doobie. they shared it with me and all the other girlies, we got crossfaded and went swimming, and i dropped my phone when trying to sensibly cross a road (it got handed into the consulate but shipping is so expensive so i'm working on that!)
-as such i've spent most of this year without a functioning phone & it's been grand. just so much more present and alive, got really into foraging, birdwatching, beachcombing, swimming in the ocean every day in the summer..
-coming back home was actually more tender than anything though. everyone goes on about post-travel blues but i've so enjoyed slipping back into mundanity; floor time with my best friend (you), parties, concerts, weekly life drawing and art club, finally feeling at home in this city. i got to illustrate a novel, animate a tv show opening, get my first poem published in a journal, work on a video game, and also win an nz game award for mine! i'm so grateful for my girlfriend and family and friends and lovely flat on the seaside. also i quit my shitty job for reals and am studying animal management next year so YAY

I got into CK about two months ago and I enjoy it a lot but...the writers of this show can't write female characters. At all. Not even Amanda is a well written character (and how sad is it that her husband has way more chemistry with Johnny and Terry than with her lol??). It's so disappointing to see how poorly female characters are written in this show, when the male characters (except Johnny who has become trash) are given so much depth and nuance. I think Tory and Carmen get the worst of this, and Sam flip-flops back and forth.
Well, Sam's whole deal is that she's in a permanent state of identity crisis, not unlike Johnny. She's terrified of her aggression and not conforming to feminine standards of behaviour and obsessed with another girl - let that poor girl come out as some form of wlw at least. Bi, gay pan - she's just as repressed as Johnny and given that both her parents are so bi coded I can only see this as a form of rebellion. I doubt the writers meant to write it that way but the only blueprint for Sam they may have had was "Pretty rich girl into chick fights." and "Teenage female audience avatar." Since Mary Mouser is now obviously aging out of the 14-17 demographic, they have brought in Devon whose entire personality seems to exist of - does she have a personality, other than not being an asshole about pronouns?
But look. The whole premise of Cobra Kai is "The bullies were right all along" and "Mid 20th century male gender norms desperately need to make a comeback." And modern audiences agree they can't write women, but modern audiences of course don't know what they're talking about. Because, you see, the way Cobra Kai sees women is really, really simple. Women are there for two things:
Enticing a guy to have an orgasm; preferably inside her body
Dealing with the fallout of a man having had an orgasm in the female body.
That's it! Even women can understand that much. Because they all agree! We've asked some women whose salary we pay and one or two who consented to go out with us, what more do you need? And sure, there are some women who do not agree, but we all agree that there is something wrong with them. You know, like our sisters, who we don't want to fuck; which proves our point. And all Amanda's and Carmen's and Sam's and Tory's actions line up exactly with those primary objectives. So they're in fact perfect at writing women at Cobra Kai. Girls fighting girls? Hot. Women bitch slapping men? Yeah, hot. The only girl we actually see fight a boy is Aisha, but she's not mainstream hot and she's not white, which means there's something wrong with her. It checks out all the way through! It's genius. Genius!
And no, logically, a woman like Carmen would not date Johnny Lawrence. But women don't do logic, we all know that. Of course a single woman in her thirties with a medical degree and two dependents would fuck a man with absolutely no prospects who would have, logically, gotten Miguel permanently paralysed. (But disability is - yuck. And it only happens to people who deserve it, anyhow. Or something. I don't know. Gross!) Anyway, ignoring that, she's a MILF! Of course a MILF has babies. It's what women do! No way would she consider abortion, and no way would she consider any other birth control than faulty condoms she'd have to trust Johnny to buy, because otherwise people like Johnny Lawrence would never become shitty fathers and since many fathers are shitty fathers it must be the women's fault because again, all they do, and want, is a man's orgasm... you know, let's not talk about it. We all know how things are. And women never simply... not tell the men when they're late. That would rob the man of that feeling of pride they get when they hit the jackpot. They wouldn't just... take a pill or or make a quick appointment and also miscarriages never happen to anyone ever, right, or entopic pregnancies or, ew, man, this is Cobra Kai, not the Hallmark channel? The point is, these writers are right about everything always and that's how it's supposed to be. And if it isn't, well, that's why they write. Just watch them.

I did not meet my reading goal this year (and threw my list out the window about a month in) but I think that’s fine because I’ve done more reading in the last six months than I have the last four years, which was the point!!
For my own benefit, and your enjoyment, here’s what I read this year:
Finished:
Indecent Advances: A Hidden History of True Crime and Prejudice Before Stonewall by James Polchin. Absolutely excellent book about the history and formation of the ‘gay panic’ defense. In depth and well researched.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Very glad I never got around to reading this in college because I would have made it my entire personality.
Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers by Jude Ellison S. Doyle. Essay collection that started out strong but I think lost the plot somewhere around the chapter on motherhood and pregnancy. Since publishing the collection the author has come out as trans so I’d be interested to see them revisit some of their points—there were a few times when they brought trans identity into focus but mostly quoted other trans essayists because they felt they were unqualified to speak on the subject, but wanted to include trans women and nonbinary people when relevant. This book gave me a lot to research, and some film recommendations aside lol.
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado. I actually received this book from a friend back in 2020, read the first story, and went hmmm. Maybe not for me! I finally picked it back up this year and devoured it in a few days. Really delicious, left me feeling sick and raw for some time. Great stuff.
The Locked Tomb series (GtN, HtN, NtN, As Yet Unsent and Dr. Sex) by Tamsyn Muir. As you all know, it has taken over my life. I think this series has a lot of good and bad qualities and was designed to make me, specifically, insane.
Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir. Very fun break down of the ‘princess trapped in a tower’ fairytale. This is one I listened to while driving and doing chores so I’d like to sit down with a print copy some time and dig through it a little more.
Antigonick by Sophocles, translated and reworked by Anne Carson. I love Antigone and Anne Carson so this was just entirely delightful. I really recommend watching the live performance here while you read along with the script!
Did Not Finish:
I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid. Really enjoyed the nonlinear storytelling and subject matter but I put the book down for a month and was completely lost when I tried to pick it back up again so it’ll have to carry over into next year’s reading list!
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. Just as excellent and unsettling as Her Body, but the narrative hit a little too close to what I went through with my most recent relationship to the point where every chapter made me physically ill so I had to put it down for my own wellbeing. Lol. Someday I’ll return to it. Not this year.
Dead Girls: Essays on Surviving an American Obsession by Alice Bolin. Very disappointing. First few essays were interesting and well written but this is not a cohesive collection and had very little to do with the pitched premise.
This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno. The plot sounded intriguing but I just found the first few chapters a slog. Could be persuaded to give it another shot but it’s not high on my list.
