hello!
Tumblr media
I'm running a new safe space blog for the two actors bringing my favourite characters to life!
what to expect:
first and foremost, this isn't necessarily an updates blog tracking any and all movement! if I'm online when things are posted, I'll update, otherwise I'll be posting whenever The Feels spike (which lately has been often, hence - blog)
no pressure to follow if you'd rather lurk, but if you'd like some little reasons to smile on your dash that's what I'm here for
this isn't just about the actors; discussions and content about byler and stranger things filming, and celebrating cast friendships, are also so welcome
if you aren't interested in content from this blog, please do go ahead with normal fandom behaviour - and block, or scroll on by. this is an easygoing, positive space. thank you!
looking forward to it getting even more fun as the byler energy picks up again :)

Which spicy trope do you prefer:
a) Mike saying he's not gay while balls deep inside of Will, or b) Mike saying, "Will, I think I might be gay" while balls deep inside of Will, and Will's just like, "Dude, you think?"
Please note that the purpose of this blog is not to be creepy or to make anyone uncomfortable. That's why I created the #spicy byler tag (I will tag all polls with this). If you don't want to see this blog or anything related to it on your feed, please block that tag. Not everyone is comfortable with this sorta stuff, and that's okay.

if you object to speculations about actor's sexualities, why is that?
a) it's unethical
b) it's creepy
c) it could get back to the person in question and cause discomfort

i've been thinking about the difference between accidental homophobes and malicious ones. im sure lots of people think homophobically because thats what they've been brainwashed to think, and theres no saying they couldnt see the light as it were.
but the people who are really not into seeing byler have sex because its gay first and foremost (rather than underage as is the big debate on here)... i think lots of het people 'sexualise' gay sex in their minds because its the only way they can process it. after all, sex organs for all genders and orientations are also part of the digestive system, and therefore 'dirty' in the way anal sex is perceived to be. ofc anal activity isnt limited to gay couples, but plenty of het people judge each other about anal too.
there is a mystery to gay sex that many het people can't understand, and this comes out as curiosity/fetishising/fear/hatred/frustation (on the negative spectrum). the butt is the first thing they'll think of, and then all the dirtiness that *could* be associated with that.
i personally think that gay men who engage in anal are admirable and understand a level of organisation and hygiene usually only shown by women (most of whom have to deal with the emotional and physical hygiene of monthly periods)
sorry theres no poll here lol

@"we're not pure magical fairies" anon!
Damn, I've been thinking about this topic so much. And getting heated about it. It's no secret that fandoms in general tend to be dominated by women, and in the case of the byler fandom, it's also overall a pretty youthful fandom. Sexuality is such a charged topic, it's so powerful and personal and runs so deep and THAT is why I need to see it portrayed with utmost authenticity. So truly, it's hard to take when people try to censor conversations surrounding a topic that means so much to me (having grown up gay in that time period). I appreciate people's thoughts and interpretations but a hearty FUCK NO to trying to censor or police gay male sexuality. I mean, damn.
Really, when people referred to hosegate as "sexualizing" mike and will, that was disheartening to say the least. It implies imposing sexuality, framing it as something separate from the characters - rather than us just interpreting the scene (and others) as intended: mike and will are hot for each other. Oh lord! Imagine! I just came away from all that feeling quite weird about my own sexuality for the first time in many years. I should seriously know better than to let such things get to me. But shame runs deep. Gays who survived the 80s know. And not only them, of course!
I've actually been looking forward to post st5, because I believe that's really the time when we will get a broader perspective of gay and bisexual men's thoughts and feelings about this storyline.

Hi! So this isn't exactly spicy, but I think it would be controversial, so I'm asking it here.
So I was thinking about writing a fic. In it, Vecna abducts Will and takes him into his mindscape, but instead of treating him poorly or torturing him, he treats Will well, and he doesn’t understand why until he learns the food he had been given was drugged. When he wakes up after passing out, he feels weird and sick, but Will manages to escape back into his body. However, after he becomes dangerously ill, he's taken to the ER, where they find several human embryos implanted in his intestines (placed there by Henry, who has the fantasy of Will ruling at his side and thinks that they can make a new race of superpowered beings, and as Will has powers and is already connected to the Upside Down, Vecna chose Will as his incubator and used his DNA to create them as well). However, because he is the first biological male to experience a 'pregnancy' (used loosely. Not only should the embryos be scientifically impossible, but he’s unable to actually give birth to them), they can’t provide an abortion because of the lack of knowledge on how, and he’s basically placed on bedrest and monitored until the embryos are far enough along that the hospital can surgically remove them without them dying. As they can’t give the children up due to the fact that they have powers and are supernatural, the Byers start to raise them, and though Joyce falls in love with the babies, Will despises them. Meanwhile, the Byers have been presenting the children as Joyce's, but the Party (and especially Mike) have questions. Specifically, why does Will hate his baby 'siblings' with every bone in his body, and why do they have Will’s eyes?
And then there's a ton of Byler and hurt/comfort and everybody trying and failing to get Will out of his depression and rage and have him bond with the babies instead.
So like. I've talked about this to a few people on here, and they all think it's batshit, but I think it would be really interesting. Do you think anyone would be interested in this?

Here me out, I am not against a byler sex scene cause I don’t think it would be anything remotely explicit anyways so discussing it in depth for me feels pointless, but I have issues with tying a sex scene into the character arcs of mike and will as if it’s the only logical way to wrap up their story, only because had there not been a pandemic and multiple delays, byler would have happened while at least one of them was still a MINOR (maybe both I would have to do the math) and there’s no way the show woulda had a sex scene in those circumstances so it’s more likely to me that having a sex scene—while it would be interesting to go there now that the actors are older—it is not the end all be all for their character arcs and not something that *has* to happen for their end narrative to make sense, since it probably was not going to happen in the first place. So maybe let’s reframe the discussion away from “they have to bone or else all the build up and such makes no sense it’s the only way to end things because blah blah blah” and more as it would be fun/cool/hot to see something more adult now that they ARE actual adults, and it would feel satisfying to their story, but that’s it. cause some people are starting to feel so passionate about the idea that i am concerned they are going to make themselves very angry if there isn’t one …
Hmm, I kinda see your point, but I also feel like there's no real point in speculating about what might have happened in the hypothetical past where the pandemic and the strikes didn't happen because A) we don't live in that timeline lol, and B) the Duffers have always had the ending in the show in mind from the jump and many/most of the beats they knew they needed to hit along the way, BUT I personally don't think they've planned out literally every single detail from the start with no wiggle room.
The writers have said as much, like for example when they tweeted all the crazy things that were supposed to happen in season 2 like possessed Will killing Bob or El mercy killing her mom. They've definitely added and subtracted some things along the way.
Beyond that, regardless of the ages of Finn and Noah, it's not outlandish to argue that sex is still thematically connected to the characters and their arcs. Byler is a story about sexuality, of which sexual attraction and, well, sex play a huge role.
And ST is a coming-of-age show, of which sex often plays a huge role regardless of the age of the actors. During S3, the writers didn't shy away from including sexual themes such as Max's happy screams comment, and the actors were still minors then. Every season has progressed these themes further. The writers and filmmakers are the ones putting the sexual symbolism and jokes into the story, and we're just picking up what they're putting down, right?
Like, I don't think Murray using the phrase "experiment sexually" was accidental, nor was hosegate, nor was Mike checking out Will's ass lol. It's all fair game when you're telling this kind of story (as long as you're creating a safe and comfortable set, of course). Because of this, IMO, there's a high chance the ST writers would've still at least implied that Byler had sex even in your hypothetical scenario. There actually isn't a hard-and-fast rule that prevents actors who aren't legal adults yet from acting out light, non-explicit sex scenes.
You say that, "byler would have happened while at least one of them was still a MINOR (maybe both I would have to do the math) and there’s no way the show woulda had a sex scene in those circumstances," and I understand why you'd say this, but if you look closer at films and shows in media history, that's not always true. I can name several shows and films that call this theory into question.
While it's true that most modern shows with teen sex scenes do tend to also have adults already playing teenagers- there's a whole page on TV Tropes about this phenomenon called Dawson Casting- (and these tend to show a lot of skin, i.e. Euphoria), which makes it easier to explore sexual storylines, that's not the case across the board.
In your hypothetical scenario, the Byler sex scene obviously wouldn't have been an explicit one (and no one's saying it will absolutely be that way now either), but that doesn't really mean it wouldn't have existed in some form. There are many examples of coming-of-age shows/movies where the actors were technically still underage at the time of filming, and it showed them making out intensely before cutting out (and sex was implied) or it showed something slightly more (closer to Stancy) but still not anywhere near HBO-level.
McLovin's sex scene in Superbad comes to mind (his actor was still 17 at the time, and his mother had to watch while it was being filmed). Thora Birch was 16 when American Beauty was filmed. More recently, there was the Jevon sex scene in Chucky this season. Devon's actor recently turned 18, but Jake's actor is still 17. And yet the season was non-subtly building up to the scene, it was 100% tastefully done, and it cut away before anything super specific happened.
Now that both Finn and Noah ARE adults, and we know there will definitely be a time jump, this hypothetical is extra meaningless. And if the Duffers want to go further and bolder with a Byler sex scene, they can, even if this wasn't the original plan. And there's lots of brilliant analysis that argues the Duffers have been planting the seeds for a while for at least some kind of sexual resolution.
But your assertion that, "some people are starting to feel so passionate about the idea that i am concerned they are going to make themselves very angry if there isn’t one" doesn't seem based in reality either. Spicy bylers might want a sex scene, and many might believe there at least will be something implied like Jancy, but I don't think anyone will actually be angry if there isn't one. Correct me if I'm wrong? I think most people are just happy there's a space to talk about Byler in unfiltered ways, to analyze the mature themes of the show, and also to have fun while doing so, especially since the season is still a ways away. It's not like people will actually fist fight the Duffers if Mike isn't moaning and giving Will backshots in S5 💀.
What do y'all think?

by filling out i think finn is just eating better and taking care of himself. he mentioned his eating habits on that off menu podcast and how he basically just used to eat like candy and mcdonalds and stuff till he was like 16. and his GB cineworld interview choice for the food to eat in the cinema was so adorable, he was listing the food groups each snack would come under to get a balanced diet (as much as you can at the movie theatre lol).
if you start to eat better nutrition you end up healthier and more rounded in your body i think, so he's still got that bone structure but all round is just glowing more. i like to chalk this up to many things but nutrition definitely helps with this for sure. perhaps he's been working out too, but even just getting a balanced diet would help him 'fill out'. i dont believe he was starving himself or had anorexia as people publicly accused him of (people are shits), but rather just getting that nutrition instead of living on fast food or no veg etc will make you more all-round healthy. and he's looking that atm!
love to see it. mental health and happiness also contributes to good physical health so maybe he's settling into himself, finding a balance in many ways in life 😊
We stan a healthy, radiant, and happier king!

So I just read a really interesting review of the gay WW1 novel In Memoriam, and the reviewer (in a respected newspaper) is describing this adolescent, boyish, somewhat cowardly attraction between the two boys.
Although they later prove themselves physically brave, Ellwood and Gaunt are cowards in love. Despite being well inducted by other boys into the improvised physical intimacy widely practised at their Wiltshire boarding school, Preshute, their own relationship remains chaste and hesitant: affectionate; Tennysonian; intensely sexless. Both characters are recognisable stock figures of boyish adolescent romance.
Now, it’s well and easy to say such in today’s era when homosexuality isn’t punishable by death, but in terms of Mike and Will, they’re going to explore in fine detail in s5 how and why both Mike and Will have been so careful. But what gets my eye is the mature way of discussing sex. If anything, works are often taken LESS seriously when they are coy about sex, because they suddenly seem embarrassed or childish or Disney-ified. I cannot imagine a more opposite view to the byler sex antis on here, who say, instead, that portrayal of adolescent sex is paedophilic. Can you imagine how you would be dragged to shit by any literary or film critics worth their salt for thinking that? For thinking that teenage sex is inherently bad or paedophilic?
The review goes on to say:
Both young men torment themselves in attempts to hide their attachment from one another and themselves. It is a losing battle, the first of many they will see as war draws close.
Oof it sounds familiar!
But mainly, the reviewer (a man) is appreciative of the detail that the author (a female) put into the work as regards sex:
Winn has written against the grain of her “lived experience” in another way too. In addition to not being a veteran of the First World War, some quick detective work in the acknowledgments section of the book reveals that she is also not a homosexual Edwardian adolescent. In fact, she does an intelligent job here too at simulating the male imagination, and although the sex remains carefully speculative, there are occasional observations of striking acuity. (“Gaunt’s prick was a little smaller than his. Ellwood had noticed that a long time ago, at school, had found it ruinously attractive.”)
I want to point out that this last quote comes before these characters engage in any sexual activity together in the book.
And this comes on the back of the author running the novel by her male gay and bisexual friends for realism before publishing:
‘I had one friend who was really generous and candid about how to make the sex scenes feel real, but also about how to make the characters – outside of the sex – behave more like men. I mean, I don’t want to put too fine a point on this, but I remember at one stage he asked me, “So, who has the bigger penis?” And I was like, “I don’t know!” And he said, “Well, the characters know!”’
- Alice Winn
So there we are! Have Mike and Will ever showered together in the gym at school? We see the high school boys do this at Hawkins in s2, but Mike and Will have never been together at high school. Either way, there’s an acknowledgement here of the fact that teenage boys think very differently about sex than girls, and that if you want to create a piece of art that not only is enjoyable and exciting and compelling, but respects its characters and source material, you must be realistic about those character’s thoughts and experiences. I can understand prudishness a little, but to go as far as to call people who are calling for sexual realism in a coming of age story paedophiles????????? What is your aim?????? Feel free to be afraid of sex until you can figure it out, but do not call others who are engaging with something natural and normal perverts and degenerates. It’s not just cruel, but completely ignorant.
In short, Mike and Will have definitely thought about and possibly know who has the bigger penis - and yes, they’re also very interested in that topic.
Okay first of all, I'm definitely adding that book to my reading list! I love queer coming-of-age period pieces. Thanks for your service to the spicy byler community!
Second of all, this brings up a lot of interesting points. I especially love your point that, "If you want to create a piece of art that not only is enjoyable and exciting and compelling, but respects its characters and source material, you must be realistic about those character’s thoughts and experiences." So true! I think Bylers are typically really good at understanding this concept, but for whatever reason they completely throw that out the window once sex is in the picture.
"In short, Mike and Will have definitely thought about and possibly know who has the bigger penis - and yes, they’re also very interested in that topic."

I feel like the “canon byler” fundamentalists have taken away the fun of innocently pointing out how much Noah, and therefore Will, has grown bc they get mad he’ll be compared to Finn/Mike. It seems like a normal person thing to do to simply take notice of “whoa this guy is big now! and he was once small! neat!” but those fans have made it insufferable for everyone because of the buff byers implications.
Anyone else agree?
yes, it’s normal to point out how characters/actors have grown and it doesn’t have to be deeper than that
no, we need to respect the fact that costuming has specifically hidden Will’s muscles and ignore Noah’s as well

do you think one of the reasons byler is so appealing is because finn and noah are kind of unusual and atypical? they dont seem stereotypical to me in the way that many tv shows and film characters still are. we have noah/will who has become more sturdily built as he grows but still soft and sweet and hesitant as will, with an all-american-with-a-twist image as noah (handsome and tan, outgoing, but still awkward, a little dorky and clumsy, and also came out as gay irl). and then mike who was never the typical leader in a show like this, still soft but assertive, + with finn's unique facial features... and then finn himself who isnt the traditional alt-cool rockstar because he has such a unique creative expression, especially now that he's got this chill vibe going on, very down to earth in his clothes and interests and open about his anxiety and struggles.
i think cos ST has gotten so big, people forget that it truly is this little nerd outsider show at its heart, and i do think the actors still also represent that message in who they are too! maybe this is also why people struggle to agree on the top/bottom debate lol. it would be easier to stereotype if they were just two jock types or something, even though that would still be inaccurate. but they're so individual and i cant remember ever seeing or reading a pairing like this on screen or in literature tbh.
what do you think?
