SPLIT THE PARTY #2: Soult, Caroline, and Lameth

Duroc takes off running, and his little helper follows. The hall of mirrors, with its chandeliers and candelabrum, is gloomy without their combined glow, but still not as dark as to where they are running to. You watch them ascend the flight of stairs at the end of the corridor. Rude.

This leaves behind Soult, (presumably) Caroline, and ADC Lameth. Whom Caroline's husband once fired from his job for making a questionable observation about her.

Just when Duroc's glow disappears upstairs on the grand staircase, there is a noise on the main entrance level where Soult and Co. have been left. It's unlike the earlier growling. More like ... the sound of breaking glass and someone cursing. It may be coming from the main auditorium. Maybe.

 Fuck it, Phantom of the Opera!AU feat. my ocs.

Some lore: - The Soldier (Ishmael) was a farmer, but repeated droughts dried up his land and his fortunes. His mother was a sick, frail thing, so to provide for her and his father he signed up for the army, thinking of returning after a year to a house with a roof that didn’t leak, plenty of food at the table, and his mother rosy-cheeked and bright-eyed again. But the war dragged on, and after five years he returned to an empty house, a pair of gravestones, and the money he was sending home nowhere to be seen. All that time living in the trenches earned him one wad of cash, a torn photograph of ghosts he once knew, a battered army jacket, and nightmares in his head. With no where else to go, he left for the Citadel, where an old friend promised him room and board for cheap and a job at the opera house. So he picked up his briefcase and beat-up guitar and hitched the next train to the Walled City itself, where his fortunes would take a strange turn.

- Ishmael was mostly a quiet man, friendly and gentle, but quiet. He liked the job enough, working as the janitor/stage hand/maintenance man to put his hands to work again. It also afforded him time alone, sweeping and fixing and tinkering. And when he was alone, he liked to sing. Marvelous voice he had, the deep notes vibrating through the halls and the rafters. Smooth like thunder, a fellow soldier of his once said after he picked up his guitar and sang a song of home in a nameless tavern in a forgotten town. But like something that came from six feet under. And little did he know, deep below the opera house, someone listened as his voice was carried through stone and over water.

- The Phantom (Vesta) hid away from the world, haunting the cisterns and chambers beneath the opera house. There, she could conduct her arcane sciences in peace, far from the prying eyes of the public. Beneath the notice of the Magisterium, the Inquisitors, and the College. As if being born at the borderlands wasn’t unfortunate enough, her bloodline was cursed with strange, wild magic running through their veins. People had been taught to fear magic unbound by Thaumaturgical Law, and thus they feared her and her sister, even when she was a little waif who wouldn’t hurt a dog that snarled at her on the street. And with Magisterium rallying that fear turned to hate, and that hate produced a bomb. It took her arm and her sister’s life. So she turned her back on the world in return, drifting from place to place, hiding in the shadows and learning her wild magics in secret. She listened close to the sound of magic, and began to sing in Tongues. Her scarred appearance masked a sharp, quick mind, and a dark hunger which grew. 

- As for how she got to the opera house, it involved a glory-stealing professor, a ratty, eager-to please concierge, some stolen jewels, a lasso, a ransom, and a bribe. And some dark magic. At least that’s how Mme. Guillermo, the concierge, tells it. 

- When she heard a voice from above while navigating the cisterns below, a voice deep and resonant, she stopped and listened. For the voice hummed with something latent, a slumbering magic. Untapped potential. She had to find its source, and after a bit of investigation she found it coming from a man sweeping the stage after the doors had shut for the night, using his broom as a makeshift microphone. The new maintenance man, Mme. Guillermo told her. Looks like someone’s going to be paid a visit by the Phantom.

Extra notes below the cut.

- Vesta and Ishmael are my ocs for a separate project, and I liked their designs and dynamic well enough to plop them into this au. But what once was a fun little diversion turned into someone more complex, and now their selves here can be considered... different... characters...

- Ishmael is closest to his canon characterization, except he’s less sneaky and enigmatic here. Less of a funky bastard (affectionate).

- Vesta is far more different from her version in my personal project (she’s actually the villain there). However, an important carried-over trait she has here is that she wants relationships that are reciprocated, so no, she won’t be forcing anyone to stay with her. She also dislikes relationships based on falsehoods from personal experience.

- The au is inspired a bit by Dishonored (which I have not played). Might add a bit of Spanish Colonial Era Philippines, if I’m up to it. 

- There isn’t a Raoul in this au (if there is a character who’s the closest thing to a Raoul they’re probably long dead anyways). The relationship between the Soldier and the Phantom can go on unimpeded by that, oho.

- I’m planning to do an Equivalent Exchange type of magic system (Fullmetal Alchemist was part of my childhood) here for the Thaumaturgical Law. Basically, the Thaumaturgical Law is structured magic, controlled through careful ritual and runes. Wild magic, found in nature, is more chaotic and unpredictable. Mishandling can lead to... unappealing results. Magical shockwaves. Zones devoid of life. Plants growing out of people. Still figuring out wild magic’s uses. 

- Vesta’s prosthetic arm (which is actually unique to this au, it’s not in the personal project canon) is powered by magical means. Thaumaturgic magic in the medical field is new, but it’s important to know that it’s difficult to use on people like her with innate magic. There could be a reaction (uhhh... something like a magic immune reaction or something, like a transplant rejection), so the treatment has to be very, very carefully tailored to the person with innate magic. This is why she won’t change her eye color (it’s a trait of her specific... ethnic group? Bloodline?) which marks her as someone with innate magic. She’s already lost one eye, she’s not taking a risk at damaging the other.

- Speaking of Equivalent Exchange, what exactly did Vesta sacrifice to get her arm to become fully functional, hm? 

- On a lighter note, Ishmael’s love language is sharing his food. He eventually offers Vesta half of his deli sandwich, because love is stored in the sandwich.

- Vesta’s love language is going on and on about her interests. She enjoys teaching more than she thought she would. Voice lessons, anyone?

- I imagine Ishmael eventually being offered a room to stay at the opera house by the Phantom after the rent gets too worrying. She pulls some strings and gets him a comfy place. Congrats! You now have a neighbor other than Mme. Guillermo, Vesta.

- Why is the Phantom so dramatic in trying to charm Ishmael? It’s because she likes pulp fiction. (She gets books from the opera library, the lost-and-found, or from Mme. Guillermo. Mme. Guillermo brings her the latest book catalogue, she marks down ones she likes, sends her off with some cash, and gets her books dropped off at Box No. 5.) Cut her some slack, she’s making do with the knowledge she has.

- Box No. 5. is hers, no one else will sit in her seat.

- Oh, and she still extorts money from the superstitious owners of the opera house. Having a reputation as a vengeful ghost who can cause chandeliers to fall on unsuspecting victims has its perks.

- I might split Christine’s role into two; the bass who becomes the Phantom’s muse and the scrappy ballerina-in-training who gets stuck below the opera house on a dare to find the opera ghost. It’s basically the “what’s with this sassy... lost child” meme between her and the Phantom, and the Phantom has to show her the way out while staying hidden. The Phantom ends up unintentionally adopting her. (I have done it, everyone! I’ve milf-ified the Phantom!)

MWIII HEADS UP!

After I post my Phantom of The Opera AU, I'll be logging out of Tumblr and Instagram to avoid any spoilers.

I'll be playing the campaign together with @pingurusama which is really exciting! ✧⁠◝⁠(⁠⁰⁠▿⁠⁰⁠)⁠◜⁠✧

The Classic You’ve Heard Of But Somehow Haven’t Read Yet: The Waiting Game by Anonymous

What you need to know going in:

A classic if I’ve ever read one! This fic is a gorgeous one-shot that sees Galadriel and Sauron just on the cusp of the 4th Age, after Sauron is defeated by Frodo. Galadriel is preparing to leave for Valinor, and is visited by him for a final meeting. The melancholy; the knowledge of all the Ages they’ve been at odds, only to come to the end for a final goodbye… it’s stunningly sad, and breathtakingly beautiful. A must-read.

The AU You Need to Immerse Yourself In Because, Well, Wow: Beautiful Creature of Darkness by @pursuitseternal

What you need to know going in:

It’s a Phantom-inspired fic, y’all! Phantom of the Opera, that is. Set in the 1st Age, Galadriel chafes under her brother Finrod’s overbearing rule in Dol Guldur when she becomes enchanted by a mysterious, magnetic presence. Three guesses as to who it is. 😉 Galadriel becomes increasingly drawn to a very persuasive and persistent Sauron, despite the darkness that shrouds him — even as an unnamed threat shadows her brother’s kingdom. If you’re a fan of Phantom, this is a fun read for the Gothic romance and well-drawn parallels to the Leroux/Weber favorite. I’m intrigued to see where it goes!

The Complete But Never Forgotten Masterpiece: Shine and Lady of the Seas by eye_of_a_cat

What you need to know going in:

Another eye of a cat classic! For me, this series (and yes, you definitely should read both) was the first “Halbrand makes Galadriel her armor in Armenolos” fic. And, like all of eye of a cat’s works, BOTH fics are absolute bangers. I mean… do I need to say much more than he makes Gal her armor and Cat wrote it? 😂 I don’t think I do, but just in case, here’s what I’ll add: terrific sexual tension that’s well, well-rewarded in the 2nd fic in the series, and it’s all Sauron’s POV, so expect possessive, awestruck, utterly beguiled (and beguiling) deliciousness. You’re welcome.

The WIP That Will Wreck You (In the Best Way): Pour Your Light In Me And Watch Me Dissolve by @maironiiel

What you need to know going in:

This S1-set fic gives a repentant-but-struggling Sauron in Numenor, simultaneously set ill at ease by Galadriel and her insistence he join her in the campaign to reclaim the Southlands, and irrevocably bewitched by her. But it’s not just Galadriel who calls to him—the Valar do, too, sending Ossë and others to appeal to him to return to the light in full; to Valinor for judgment. The result is a scintillating slow burn with promise for more, with a lovely expansion and interpretation of what we saw in the show, particularly in how the Valar and other Maia might react or appeal to this version of Mairon. A part 1 with one chapter left to go before part 2, I’m curious to see how this story evolves.

The Can't Stop Consuming No Matter What Time It Is Fic: se vis pacem, para bellum by @nenyabusiness

What you need to know going in:

This is another recent sub I added to my rotating reading list, so it’s just starting to heat up, but when it’s a John Wick AU, you know to expect a thrill ride right from the start—and the fic doesn’t disappoint! If you’re not familiar with John Wick, here’s all you need to know: Galadriel is a retired, renowned assassin known as The Daughter from a family of deadly assassins. She’s drawn from her retirement when her brother, Finrod, is killed by a rival crime family controlled by Sauron. In an attempt to curb her quest for vengeance, Sauron turns to subterfuge… and masquerades as an unwitting ally to gain her trust. Where they go from there? 👀 I’m excited to see, but so far, this is a perfect premise for this ETL pair to keep those thrills coming.

SPLIT THE PARTY #1: Lannes, Petiet, Duroc, Lydia, and the nixa

Duroc's glow makes it easy to follow him. This has the unfortunate effect of plunging Soult, Lameth, and Caroline back into relative darkness because now Duroc's gone and the nixa with its lantern is following him. The shadows seem to shrink away viscerally from his light.

The hallway of mirrors ends at the foot of a multistory marble staircase, the uppermost landings are barely visible even with Duroc's bright glow.

"Please! Get me out of here!" the unseen woman sobs. The faint thumping starts again, like she's beating her fists against a wall or a door. Her voice is still low and muffled, but seems louder once you step up to the fifth floor landing. It may be coming from one of the theatre boxes, or further down a black corridor.

There seems to be debris, bits of broken statues, ripped paintings, and smashed furniture on this level.

A glowing, grinning face leers at everyone from the darkness from where the voice seems to be coming from, and then blinks out like it was never there.

He's currently in a creepy theatre, and while most correspondence would be answered after he leaves the creepy theatre or by the people back at his headquarters (currently his home of Soultberg), somehow, this... patting sensation has manifested. He hisses under his breath and attempts to look unruffled.

Bloomingdale’s has debuted its annual holiday campaign, Best Holiday Ever, with The Carousel @ Bloomingdale’s: Wonka, to be followed by its yearly window unveiling, hosted this year in partnership with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

On November 16, the retailer unveils its iconic window display at the 59th Street flagship with a night of festive celebrations, philanthropy, and must-see performances, also inspired by Wonka. The unveiling, which begins at 6 pm, will be hosted by Amber Ruffin, co-writer of Broadway’s Some Like It Hot and contributor to the upcoming revival of The Wiz. She’ll be joined by special guest Jonathan Groff. Other featured performers include Norm Lewis (The Phantom of the Opera) and Jessica Vosk (Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof).

This holiday season, Bloomingdale’s will continue to partner with customers to “b the change,” raising awareness and funds for organizations that advance its mission of building a more equitable, sustainable future for all, including its ongoing relationship with No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood hunger, and the Child Mind Institute, whose mission is to transform the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS helps people receive lifesaving medications, health care, nutritious meals, counseling, and emergency financial assistance and has been a Bloomingdale’s grant recipient for the past two years, leveraging its talented supporters from the Broadway community to add animation to its flagship store while spreading awareness.

You know what the most disappointing Clone High S2 episode is to me personally? The musical one.

I’m not comparing it to the first seasons Rock Opera one because there is no point because it is perfect Clone High Ep. I mean it was Jack Black for Peet’s sake.

However, I want to keep in mind, since the end of S1, we have had HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL! One of the easiest things to parody! It should be a parody of that very specific time in Disney TV where it’s all about stupid Disney teen dramas of that era. You have an audience that probably either watched that growing up OR at the very least knows about it through cultural osmosis. And it doesn’t even need to be just high school musical. It can also be one of the MILLION other teen Disney musical movies from the 2000’s. Cheetah girls, (Joan and the girls can be the “Ocelot Ladies” and dress like Ocelots) Camp Rock, (They can just be camping in the middle of the School Campus and also make it a slasher camp horror parody, with singing!) or at least have one of those awkward teen trauma dump scenes in all those movies where the clones could be laying in the grass in a circle and just try to out trauma each other. (It’s starts with Confu talking about how his parents don’t pay attention to him and ends with Cleo talking about seeing her Foster Father have his guts eaten out by a hippo at the zoo. No one really knows how to react to that one)

But even if they don’t go with that route… THERE ARE A MILLION DIFFERENT HIGHSCHOOL BASED MUSICALS THEY CAN PARODY! Heathers! Harriet and the girls accidentally kill Cleo, hijinks ensue! Dear Evan Hansen! They already love dumping on Abe so much, have him break his arm and whine about how his life is so unfair while having someone with real issues like Van Gohn not get noticed! Grease! OMG IMAGINE HOW FUNNY IT WOULD BE IF THE BOYS ALL DRESSED LIKE GREASERS AND SANG A KNOCK OFF OF GREASE LIGHTNING!

And the “Big Race” is just them racing down the halls on a tricked out version of one of these things:

Hell, they could even do the lazy parody of The Phantom of the Opera. Like Topher is mad that he doesn’t get to be the leader in the awareness month campaign and puts on a disguise so that he can sabotage it. And it’s so obviously is him doing it but no one ever figures it out and when he’s unmasked everyone screams because HE’S HIDEOUS!

Instead, what do we get? A very weak ep with 3 songs that aren’t even memorable. Nothing really making good jabs at the musical High School drama and what I found most disappointing is Harriet. If I’m reading her right, she’s suppose to be a bit of a Theater Kid? Have these people MET Theater Kids??? She should be a lot more pushy with her musical love! She should be a drama lover and want to know all the juicy details in everyone’s drama! She should be a huge romantic and try to ship her school mates and manufacturing romantic tropes between them! But as is, she is flat. Not Theater Kid enough.

They don’t even have a musical guest star! I get if they can’t get Lin-Manuel Miranda, but like SOMEONE THAT CAN SING AT LEAST! You know, go with the theme of the ep! But no, they couldn’t even do that!

That’s what I feel like is the worst part of the ep. There is SO MUCH they could have done with this genre and they did almost nothing! Everything they did do just didn’t push enough and felt flat. I WANT Clone High to have a good High School Musical ep. I LOVE Musical drama and it’s campiness! I want a ridiculous parody of it! I think the Clones would be great in one! But it just wasn’t enough and that is super disappointing.
