[6] Again quite idiomatic. 수고하다 means to like, take the trouble, put in the effort, do the work, etc. and 수고하셨습니다 means "thank you for the trouble" etc. but he's clearly being a little flippant here.

thoughts on my art history class

Right now we are reading about "japonisme" and how western artists were inspired by japanese art after the opening of their borders in the 1850s. The thing that's crazy is how it was the catalyst for people to realize that there is no single type of "good" art, and that art is subjective. No longer were people tied down to the classical greek ideas of "good art" and the rules were bent more.

It just reminds me of a designer friend of mine complaining about art history and art classes at our school. He was saying that people shouldn't focus so much on old art because people were getting stuck and only recreating the old, instead of pioneering new paths with art and design. While I definitely think that only recreating old art is a good way to shoot yourself in the foot creatively, it is such a bizarre take. At the time I chalked it up to the difference between visual arts people and design people, but man, are you kidding? Did we even take the same art history class? I feel like its *so* important that we are learning about the past and the journey of art in the world leading up to this point.

Like there was this post on here ages ago that was about people complaining about taking beginning philosophy classes, but the point of the classes was to make sure people knew the foundations. That way, someone who had taken a philosophy course before would realize that their "groundbreaking new worldview" was actually an extremely thought-out and previously discussed 200 years ago. It's the same with art!!

I feel like having all this information in the back of your mind is SO helpful with being creative!! Maybe it's just me, but I get extremely inspired when learning about art, and never to recreate the same thing I am looking at. Surely there are similarities, because thoughts don't just appear from nothing and I'm being inspired by SOMETHING, but man. This dude is seriously throwing away a super cool experience of learning about the past and hundreds of years of people doing the same thing we want to do: make cool pictures!!!!

Camilla and Palamedes are just... everything to me. God. I don't read them as romantic or platonic or QPR, though I can totally see all of those readings. To me, they are the perfect embodiment of the necromancer/cavalier ideal. They did it. They got it right.

But Camilla and Palamedes? They did it! They got it right! They understood that the cavalier can't be the only one to sacrifice, that the necromancer must be willing to do anything for their cavalier too. They'd kill and die for each other, they'd do whatever necessary to keep the other one safe and happy. They're so in sync and so in love. They ate each other like binary stars to keep their love intact even if they as individuals couldn't be.
