Blog Deliverable #7
Tumblr media
In order to gain complete understanding into the landscape of mental health and homelessness in Portland, it is critical to hear from voices that can speak to the issue firsthand. In this post, I will be sharing a video from the YouTube channel “Examining Portland,” which platforms people experiencing homelessness on the streets of Portland and allows them too share their story online for exposure and often, for help from viewers.
youtube
This is a video of Dakota, a young girl who was born and raised in Portland. Experiencing homelessness herself, she comments on how she has witnessed Portland go downhill over the years, and is experiencing some of that disparity herself. Dakota grew up in a house with her mother and father, until her father was kicked out when she was only five years old. Her mother supported her financially and allowed her a place to live until she was 18, when her mother kicked her and her sister out on Thanksgiving, telling them that she was selling the house to new residents from California, and that they would both need to find a place to live. She found an apartment and worked multiple jobs in efforts to pay her rent, but lost the apartment after she overworked herself and her disability flared up. Suffering from EDS, her connective tissues were not strong enough to sustain the heavy workload that she was engaging in. For the past year and a half, (at the time of this video,) she had been living in her car until somebody broke the window. Sleeping in the cold, she was searching for another option for her and her dog. Dakota deals with mental health issues and has faced chronic pain for her entire life. She talks openly about her addiction to opiates, saying that she hopes to be able to taper off and become sober. She’s incredibly motivated to get her life back on track and face the hand of cards that she’s been dealt, hoping to find housing, get back on medication to stabilize herself, and enter the workforce again.
I wanted to share this channel and this video specifically to bring light to some of the people that are facing the damage caused by inaccessibility to housing and resources. To watch more videos and learn more, please visit: https://www.youtube.com/@examiningportland

The Life-Changing Benefits of Detoxing from Drugs and Alcohol
Detoxing from drugs and alcohol is one of the most important steps in the journey to recovery. As you probably know, the process of eliminating these toxins from the body is known as detoxification. This frees the addict from the psychological and physiological hold that the substance has on them. Taking this into account, on today’s blog we will explore not just the short-term benefits of detoxification but also its advantages in the long run and how detox centers play an important role in recovery.
We cannot stress enough how important detox is when beginning a path to recovery and living a life that is healthier and more fulfilling. At Leona Valley Recovery Center, we provide tailored and all-encompassing treatment regimens, so anyone looking for assistance will have no trouble finding it here. Taking all this into account, together, we can help you regain control and help you rediscover your true potential. Keep reading and stay with us to discover how our services can make a meaningful difference.
Short-Term Benefits of Detoxing Detoxing from drugs and alcohol brings about immediate benefits that pave the way for a successful recovery. Here are some short-term advantages:
Physical Restoration: The body begins to heal as soon as toxins are eliminated, leading to improved physical health. Withdrawal symptoms are managed through medical supervision, providing relief from discomfort and reducing the risk of complications.
Mental Clarity: Detoxing allows the mind to clear from the fog of substance abuse. As the body adjusts to being drug-free, cognitive functions improve, and mental clarity is restored. This newfound clarity enhances decision-making abilities and self-awareness.
Emotional Stability: Substance abuse often disrupts emotional stability, leading to mood swings and irrational behavior. Detoxing helps stabilize emotions, providing a sense of balance and emotional well-being.
How About the Long-Term Benefits of Detoxing? So far so good? We’ve mentioned some of the detoxification positive health effects, but the long-term benefits are even much more significant than the short-term ones. Up next is a short list (because there are so many benefits) of some of the long-term advantages that anyone that goes through a detox center can enjoy:
Reduced Risk of Health Issues: Long-term drug use hurts the body and thus raises the risk of a number of acute and chronic life-threatening health problems. By going through rehab and staying sober, people can lower their risk of kidney damage, heart problems, and other health problems linked to addiction.
Improved Relationships: Relationships with loved ones are often strained by addiction. Detoxing and starting recovery can help rebuild trust and make relationships that are healthy. It helps people fix failed relationships and build better bonds with family, friends, and, most importantly, with themselves.
Personal Growth and Self-Discovery: Detoxing is also all about personal growth and self-reflection. It allows individuals to take a good look and identify underlying issues contributing to their addiction, paving the way for lasting change and rock-solid personal transformation.

Where to Begin?
CW: Suicidal thoughts/ contemplations/ plans, sexual abuse/ some strong language/ honestly if you’re my family you probably don’t want to read this
In order to explain where I am today—physically and mentally—I need to set up an understanding of what exactly lead me to where I am today.
When I was a freshman in high school, I was hospitalized for my mental health. I didn’t know why, but I was suicidal and spent 14? days in the hospital where I was prescribed Prozac. I was diagnosed with Major Depression Disorder and General Anxiety Disorder, on top of my preexisting ADHD.
At the time I just said all of my mental health issues were due to the fact that I was adjusting to the new circumstances of my home life: My parents were divorced; my mom had just moved to Georgia to be with her boyfriend; my grandmother moved as well but to Central California to be with my cousins; and the cherry on top had been the fact that 9 people (only 4 of which were my kin, at least 2 were drug addicts) were now living in my childhood home, a four-bedroom and two-bathroom house. It was old (I think it was built in the 70s). We also seemed to be running an animal shelter (5 dogs and 3 cats. Two of the cats were not spayed and had litters at the same time so I think at one point we had 9 total cats). No one, myself included, seemed to care about the cleanliness of the house; however, when I was stressed and life seemed like too much to bare, I would clean which was the only time any cleaning would get done.
So yeah that seemed like a good enough reason to want to die.
I got out of the hospital sometime after Valentine’s Day and I went back to school. I seriously can’t clearly remember anything that happened while I was on Prozac. It’s all fuzzy like a movie I watched only one time and I was drunk when I watched it. I have only one fairly clear memory from this time:
I was in my first hour class, Physical Science (which I think was my favorite class freshman year) and my teacher was talking and I could see his mouth move but I could not comprehend anything he said. It was like he was an adult in Charlie Brown. The bell rang and I couldn’t move. One of my classmates nudged me and I awoke from my daze to a puddle of drool on my notebook.
You see 14 days isn’t enough time to see how your body reacts to a new drug plus a hospital does not have the same stimuli as a classroom. I was given a drug and I could not see a doctor to alter my meds. Everyone on my insurance was not accepting new patients, but I could not take the Prozac anymore. Fuck America’s mental health care system. My dad saw how much worse off I was on the Prozac that he weened me off of it and I had to learn to cope on my own.
I failed 3 classes that year.
Sophomore year, my home life hadn’t improved much and my eldest brother went to rehab. That took an emotional toll. Especially the “family week” which was toward the end and we set boundaries with each other and learned what the signs of relapse are. Each family member had to write a letter “When you do drugs it makes me feel like…if you continue to do drugs I will…if you steal from me…if you lie to me..” things like that to set boundaries on both sides. Now really all I knew was that my brother had sold my Zune and a few other things that were mine, so I just had to say don’t steal from me. When he read the letter he had wrote to me he looked me in the eyes and said, “You will not bring up anything I have done to you. If you do I will end the conversation then and there and walk away.”
I felt a lump form in my throat and eyes began to water. I just nodded and held back the tears. I knew I wasn’t wrong this whole time; I knew I wasn’t sick; I knew I hadn’t imagined it. He knew. He remembers. But for now that was all I got.
He was released, went into a ¾ home, relapsed, repeat. Now he’s been sober for a couple of years I think. Good for him.
Junior year I think was the most uneventful year as far as my mental health goes. I grew closer to friends and really it was a good year.
Senior year I took on more responsibility and was 2nd VP of JCL. My depression reared its ugly head. I was suicidal again. I had panic attacks almost daily and my dad would check me out of class, so I almost always missed my 7th hour which was Pre Cal. I was horrible at 2nd VPing and the other JCL officers decided to take action.
They wrote a letter and gave it to our Latin teacher and she read it to me. I cried and after my Latin class was over I ran into the restroom and sobbed. I thought I was going to throw up from crying so much. The bell rang for my English class to begin and I hugged the toilet. I began to calm down but even so I hated myself for being so weak I couldn’t handle any form of criticism. I thought about the scissors I had in my backpack. It would be so easy I thought. So easy and then I would have to worry about anything anymore. Weakness isn’t a problem when you’re dead. When you’re suicidal, this is the logic that your brain wants to follow, but you can’t let it. Find something to act as an anchor. People always say live for yourself, but when your self-worth is less than a penny, that seems like a dumb argument. What I wanted to live for I really didn’t know. But I knew I didn’t want to die where my best friend could be the one to find the body and her class was right across the hall. So I sent my dad a text to come get me and he did.
All of this is to say: I didn’t apply to any colleges because I didn’t know if I was going to be alive at the end of senior year.
By the way I failed 2 classes senior year. Still graduated class of 2014.
Fall of 2014 my dad and I move to Houston for his job and because I wasn’t staying at that house. Spring of 2015 I start as a Theater Major at a community college. I really didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I liked acting. Summer I work at a Girl Scout camp. Fall 2015 I had a problem getting registered for class, so took semester off and did a community play “Guards! Guards!” Spring 2016 I do just some basics at school and change my major to math. That summer I returned to camp then that fall go back to school and get a job at Space Center Houston. Dec 2018 I got my Associates in Mathematics.
At some point during all of this and I’m leaning more toward late ‘15 early ’16 I went to visit my grandparents. My brother was living with them. He says he needs to talk to me so we go outside.
He said he had done somethings to me a brother never should. He apologized. He said drugs aren’t an excuse for what he’s done. He said that someone had done it to him so he thought it was okay to do the same.
I was stunned into silence—just like when he was in rehab setting boundaries. Everything came flooding back. It had happened when I was still very young, I know I was somewhere between 10 because I hadn’t started my period yet and that was at 11 and he was still in school (he was a dropout). He performed oral sex on me and made me reciprocate. I had no idea what was happening but I knew it was wrong. I think it may have happened more than once, but I know that this set a foundation for my anxiety and my inability to say no or speak up to defend myself. I was petrified when I told one of his friends what he had done to me and he asked me to do the same for him. Then he went bragging to my brother about it and my brother started to fight him and yell racial slurs saying he never wanted to see him around our house again and that was my fault. They had a falling out because of me.
My parents said that any girl who does exactly what she’s asked in a sexual context, who doesn’t put up a fight, has no respect for herself. If you don’t respect yourself no one else would either. My parents didn’t respect me then, and if I told them, I knew they would blame me for having no self-respect. So I ignored it. Pretended like it never happened. I convinced myself that I had made it up. I was sick and disgusting for imagining these things. For years, even after rehab, I thought it was all in my head. He was always my favorite brother. I always wanted to do what he did. He played baseball, I signed up for T-ball; he joined swim team, so did I; he was a goalie, I became one too. And I kept up that illusion.
To this day I have only had a less than five minute conversation with him about what he did and that was his “apology” which was just another one of his 12-steps. I feel like it wasn’t even real.
So here we are now 2019. September 6th is my three year anniversary at Space Center Houston. And I have transferred to a 4-year school to get my bachelor’s in Geology. I have moved to Shreveport.
From here on out this blog is going to be about what I think of as I’m getting use to living on my own in a city that I’m only vaguely familiar with as a new transfer student who is nearly 24 years old.

Just because they have mental health issues doesn’t mean Demi has any right to act like an entitled bully.

5 Daily Wellness Tips to Improve Your Health Now
June 6, 2020 7 min read
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Meditate! Be Grateful! Journal! It’s starting to sound a lot like “Marsha! Marsha! Marsha!” from The Brady Bunch. I now know what Jan must have felt like. Daily, if not hourly, we are bombarded with much of the same information on how to improve our overall health and well-being. While all of those practices certainly work and are valuable, there are a few methods that do not get as much air time.
The following tips might sound a bit strange and counterintuitive, but not only are they effective, but they are also cost and time-efficient.
1. Contrast therapy
Being told to take a cold shower and sober up may have more than one meaning after all. Contrast therapy or hydrotherapy is a process in which you take your body from one temperature extreme to the other through the use of hot and cold water. This centuries-old practice is widely known for its many benefits.

Ranging from inflammation reduction, accelerated tissue repair and improved circulation, contrast therapy is no longer just primarily for athletes. “It has the ability to help tone the autonomic nervous system in ways few things can,” says Dr. Kelly Bender, founder of the Pure Vitality Rejuvenation Center located in Los Angeles, California.
People seeking to increase their energy, sharpen focus and enhance overall mood have started to incorporate contrast therapy into their daily life. According to Dr. Bender, “The easiest but still very effective way to use it is by simply ending your showers with 30 seconds of cold water. Start with cool water one day and work your way up to full-on cold. Ending your shower with about 30 seconds of cold has a different effect than taking entire cold showers. Having a quick burst at the end will actually cause your body to react and heat up more”. The intensity and duration of the shower can be adjusted depending on your preference and tolerance. No matter how small you start one thing is certain, you will have the ability to get comfortable with being uncomfortable real fast.
2. Sunlight
It’s known that sunlight is an actual physiological human need. More often than not, we think about the sun in terms of how over-exposure leads to skin cancer, eye injuries and premature aging. But depending on the time of day, the sun brings a lot of reward with reduced risk.
The golden hours to reap the benefits of sunlight are between 7 am to 9 am, as opposed to later in the day when the sun’s rays are the strongest. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, it triggers the production of vitamin D, aka the “sunshine” vitamin. Aside from just building bones, D plays a major role in strengthening our immune system. If you’ve been having trouble sleeping, oddly enough, sunlight is extremely powerful in regulating our circadian rhythm, the body’s internal alarm clock. Misalignment of the circadian rhythm not only throws off our sleep/wake cycle, but our ability to handle stress is severely diminished. If you are still not convinced, take into account that the phrase “sunny disposition” holds some merit. Sunlight increases serotonin, the feel-good hormone which helps us to feel calm, focused and promote overall well-being.
Related: Why We Are Stress Eating and How to Manage It
A few simple ways you can invite 15 to 20 minutes of morning sun into daily routine include going for a quick walk or any other type of activity. If you are pressed for time you can get smaller amounts of sun exposure by opening windows as you get ready for the day or even while driving.
3. Grounding
Earthing, otherwise known as “grounding,” has evolved from once being considered an oddball trend to more of a mainstream therapeutic technique. Having been around for centuries, grounding is simply what it sounds like — making direct physical contact to our planet. Whether by bare feet, hands or even our entire body, the belief behind this practice is that the Earth’s surface contains electrons that promote feelings of well-being. Healthline reports that there’s not a ton of scientific research on the benefits of grounding, but that people who do it have reported improvement for conditions such as fatigue, anxiety and depression.
Grounding is an easy lifestyle addition involving a minimal amount of effort and time. Although it may sound a bit off the beaten path, it’s as simple as sitting, standing or walking barefoot outdoors for a few minutes a day. A patch of grass, dirt, sand or a body of water, are all great places to soak up the healing power of nature.
4. Cellular repair
This wellness component is so important and yet talked about very little. The best way for us to maintain the foundation of our health is on a cellular level.
Well known within the science world, it’s only recently that the molecule NAD has become mainstream and embraced by the wellness industry. NAD, think of it as a “helper”, is an essential resource because it supports the repair of our cells, supports metabolism and helps turn what we eat into energy. Additionally, increased NAD fights immune stress. As we age, we lose up to 50% of these helpers. In addition, a variety of everyday stressors and even viral infections can deplete our cell’s NAD levels (up to 80% in the case of viruses).
Related: 8 Trustworthy Tips on How to Stay Physically and Mentally Healthy Right Now
While the potential health benefits of NAD supplements are still being examined by researchers, Tru Niagen is one worth checking out. They used to sponsor my podcast and I really just like the product.
5. Gut health
You know that “gut feeling” you have when something is or isn’t right? The condition of our gut affects way more than just how our stomach feels. Hence, why the gut is often referred to as the second brain.
Gut health is simply the balance of good bacteria vs bad bacteria in our intestinal walls. For optimum health, obviously the good must outweigh the bad. Bacteria not only helps us digest food and assimilate nutrients, but has the power to affect our state of mind. It serves the super important function of producing serotonin, the mental “feel good” chemical. It is estimated that our gut produces about 95 percent of the serotonin in the body.
The gut-brain connection is no joke and if you want to get an upper hand on brain fog, anxiety, bloating and depression, read on. To keep the “butterflies” in your stomach at bay, consider ditching the artificial sweeteners, processed foods, gluten and limit alcohol consumption. Rather than mindlessly reaching for something sugary, try a more bacteria friendly snack. Foods that are easy to incorporate in your diet such as apples, almonds and sweet potatoes are all great choices. Berries, live yogurt, bone broth and kombucha are excellent additions as well.

The Recover Offers a Reliable List of Drug Rehabs in the U.S
Huntington Beach, California 2/25/2019 – Approximately, 21.5 million American adults battled an illicit drug disorder in 2014 according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Almost 80 % of people suffering from substance abuse struggled with an alcohol use addiction. More than 7 million Americans, aged 12 and older, fought a drug use disorder. The Recover was recently votes the best drug rehab directory from a popular digital media outlet. The media company rated The Recover the best directory because of the amount of information, and the ease of searching for help on their site.
Illicit substance addiction is prevalent and alarming in the U.S. Luckily, therapy programs are available and accessible throughout the country. Still, choosing the most responsive and relevant treatment plan is a challenge. It’s good to know that there are capable directories that provide a list of drug rehabs. They provide the most-sought after facilities and therapy plan that meet everyone’s unique condition.
Deciding to enter a drug rehab is a big decision that costs money and time. When looking for an effective plan, be cautious to end up entering in a facility that suits an individual’s specific needs. It is important to weigh the pros and cons of every center in mind, too. This ensures a safe environment that’s key in achieving a successful recovery. Each program has a variety of services, goals, and amenities for patients. Before entering an addiction center, a trusted directory with a list of drug rehabs in the US can play a crucial role.
Addressing substance abuse disorder is hard. A patient has a high chance of recurring cravings and mental health issues. This is where a medication comes into play. Drug addiction centers in the US provide substitute medications for those addicted to opiates, including Suboxone, methadone, or buprenorphine. A trusted directory offers a range of drug rehabs that provide tested medications. Permanent recovery is what a qualified directory wants to achieve.
Some rehab programs only keep patients sober. Illicit substance users suffer from a poor state of physical health. They experience malnutrition, anemia, intestinal problems and other diseases. Physical health is associated with a full recovery. A drug and alcohol rehab that provides nutritional support is ideal. The Recover is everyone’s leading partner to find a complete treatment. From keeping users sober to bringing back their health, they can help find a suitable and quality plan.
Aside from physical health, mental health options from a rehab facility are imperative. Whether a person suffers from bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia or anxiety, a program that focuses on mental health is recommended. The Recover makes it happen. Not only will they help find a center that emphasizes physical health, but they will also aid in determining a complete treatment plan.
About the The Recover
Choosing a rehab facility is a major decision to make. With a mistake, patients will end up relapsing and starting a treatment again. At The Recover, they lessen these risks. Designed to spread awareness and permanent recovery, they provide the right information about effective therapy plan.
For further details about the list of drug rehabs in the US, The Recover is the most sought-after directory. Give them a call today!

2017 Return
I am returning to tumblr. It is, in a way, my “secret blog.” My outlet of creativity and somewhere I will not fear judgement from those that know me. HERE IS THE BIG REVEAL!
My life was already seemingly ..we will say “rough.” With my type 1 Diabetes, my j-pouch from my colon removal. Now, in my return, you wont believe where my life ended up.
I was in what I thought to be..“A fairytale romance.” But, things went off the deep end. Well that man and I, ended up in an i.v heroin addiction. At one point he was sent back to California , because his parents were only here for a few years to handle their business that is located close to where I live. They had returned to Cali and Robert had stayed living with my family and I. So eventually, my family found my syringes.. Bobby wasn’t able to hold a job. Not from just the drugs..but also some mental demons he was fighting that I just always hoped were not existent, but now I 100% believe that he really did inherit his biological fathers schizophrenia and depression, and more.. I’m sure. So we had to drop him off at the airport and said goodbye. SO.. the few weeks leading up to his departure, I wouldn’t stop crying… I told him I knew that we would never see eachother again. I felt that he did not have the determination among other things to get a job and work to support himself all while saving money to move back to PA with me. I eventually ended up being kicked out. I never thought my parents would do that, because I had so many serious health issues. But they had no choice, and I understand that now…finally. I also forgot to mention that now, I had my j-pouch removed. I had my whole large intestine and fake colon removed, and now have a permanent ileostomy. It really ruined my confidence and added undeniable anxiety to my life. So anyways, I starved. I lived with my friend that grew up next door. Her mother was in and out of jail, and was an addict herself. She allowed partying and actually used with us. My addiction got worse. Some days I just wished for death. I was letting my non-licensed drug dealer keep my car in exchange for drugs. I was lying to everyone about being clean. At one point, I received a message from a woman that I learned to be Bobby’s secret girlfriend. Well .. don’t ever say things can’t get any worse…because they sure as hell can. SO ..eventually I came home, after somehow faking my sobriety. I just got better at hiding it and manipulating. I got a job with a family member in an office. Bobby dumped the other woman and claimed that he did it because I was not loving him, and I was distant because of my addiction. Which was fucked up because, he was the one to shove needles in my arm until I mustered up the guts to hit my veins myself. Of course, there are many details and happenings I am missing and do not want to type out. The short version of my story is..long enough. One day, I decided I was ready to stop. I asked my mother if I could tag along on Sunday morning to go visit my grandmother at a nursing home to take the opportunity to talk. My dad had anger issues and is a large intimidating man. He was never one to be sweet and talk about feelings. He showed emotions in anger and loud yelling and cursing and saying stupid far fetched things..but he eventually changed..but that will be talked about later.. So my mom took it well. The next day was a Monday..I woke up dope sick, went to get money, and shot up. When my dealer drove up, I told him he wouldn’t be hearing from me. That I was going away. So I ended up loading myself up for the long drive and annoying admission process that would be just torture to do in withdrawal. Which was always worse for me..due to my diabetes and ileostomy. My sugars would spike to critically high numbers, and my shit bag turned into a..water bag. Yes, that meant that instead of the bit of intestine that is sewn outside of my stomach having normal stool..literally clear water would pour out like a faucet. What a mess. How embarrassing. Even though I hid it..the sounds and the nurses and doctors seeing it was enough mixed with my already embarrassing drug habit..I bet they thought..“Why would she use knowing she has so many diseases already?” But the pain from the ostomy and my diabetes, my traumatizing experiences from being so sick from age 11 and having a lot of other messed up scenarios at school and with bad doctors and terrifying hospital experiences is what led to my addiction. Well that and the opiates that I was on after surgery mixed together.. So I am wrapping it up by saying..That stay in rehab was scary. But once I got used to it, I got serious. I was also one of the most beautiful girls there. And trust me..I am not cocky enough to just say that myself. Some people joked by saying they thpught I worked there. I sure didnt look the part. People were so sad to hear about my medical issues..they all said it was such a tradgedy. I guess I agree. So that ONE rehab stay, was my last. Usually the statistics say that one to three people within the whole rehab would stay clean after leaving. I stayed in touch with most of the people and sadly, thats true..Most had relapsed or died. So when I got home, my dad was so loving and …different. He kissed my cheek and said how glad he was to see me. He was excited to walk me to my room and show me the smart t.v he bought me because I had sold my old t.v for drugs..of course. Oh and..I forgot to say..My father worked night shift. So my mother and I decided to not tell him when i decided to leave again to avoid fighting and violence in the house ..we had no idea how long it was going to take to get a bed available in rehab. He was asleep while I packed and my mother came home and we quickly carried my luggage out and left without him waking up. I dont know how he didn’t because ever since he found out I was an addict..he never slept soundly and would wake up every time he heard a noise or the doors beeped from our alarm when opening them. So luckily I had warned my uncle before I left that I was going and he said the job would be waiting when I was home. I am so blessed. Today I am 1 year and 3 months clean. I am living and breathing the narcotics anonymous program. I have a sponsor, a homegroup, and am in service in many ways. I have a family of women that I can count on. My family is so happy and in peace and harmony. My father came out of the mess a very sensitive, loving and affectionate man..which is so surprising. I guess there are a few things that turned out for the better other than just me being happy and in recovery. I have a close relationship with God and I no longer believe in religion. I believe in spirituality and a relationship with a higher power. I held my part time job. I still struggle medically, but am working on it. We actually ended up getting a puppy french bulldog shortly after I came back home. I have pride again. Can save money and pay my bills. My family and employer trust me with money and credit cards, and constantly praise me for how beautiful of a person I have become. I inspire others..whether it be because of my medical battles, my addiction or many other things I have been through. Unfortunately I had to cut ties with the friend next door due to her inability to stay sober. This disease is an apidemic. But if I could do it with all of my missing and failed organs, and mental diseases, so can anyone else. Oh and of course not to my surprise, that boyfriend never came back. He broke my heart just about 2 or 3 months ago but..I will love again and it will be perhaps better than that. Even though I was REALLLLLY attracted to him, and he was by my hospital bedside, and said things no other guys ever rarely do..I guess the truth is..that nothing he says can make up for literally shoving drugs into me and not realizing if he loved me, he would have known my diseases made using drugs an even bigger risk that it is for others.
Again, theres a lot left out..both good and bad things. Some that would bring tears upon even the most stubborn, hard-asses. But for now, I’ll leave it at this.

Addiction Treatment Barriers in the LGBT Community
Long Term Care Shows Best Outcomes
It’s commonly understood that the best chance most people have of recovering from drug and alcohol addiction is through receiving professional treatment. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse or NIDA (run by the National Institutes of Health – NIH) supports the claim that people who suffer from addiction generally require long-term, extended professional care to adequately treat their substance use disorder (SUD). The same is true of members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. However, specific factors can get in the way of helping LBGT people.
What are the main addiction treatment barriers that affect the LGBT community? How can these barriers be addressed and overcome? We review here, and invite your questions and feedback in the designated section at the end of the page.
Insufficient Treatment in the General Population and in the LGBT Community
Unfortunately, many people aren’t getting the care they need to deal with their drug and alcohol addiction. According to the Surgeon General of the United States, only 1 out of 10 of the people who need treatment actually get it. This problem is even worse in traditionally marginalized groups who already don’t have access to sufficient resources, such as the LGBT community.
In this population, addiction rates are higher than average. In fact, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), drug and alcohol addiction rates in this population are as high as 20 to 30%, or 2 to 3 times the average for the general population. Clearly, addiction treatment is necessary for members of this community. But there are some unique barriers to treatment that affect the LGBT community that must be addressed in order to make adequate treatment for the population a reality.
General barriers to addiction treatment access
The barriers to treatment that generally prevent people from getting the care they need are varied, but they are mostly related to:
1. Shortages of Facilities – Treatment is in high demand in many communities, and in some places there just aren’t enough available beds. For example, the wait for a spot in treatment can be as long as a year in places like Maine, where the opioid addiction epidemic has hit especially hard. People who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction can’t wait that long- many die before getting treatment.
2. Lack of Insurance – Many insurance companies don’t cover treatment or can legally deny care for people.
3. Lack of Finances – People without insurance (or subpar insurance) may never be able to afford care out of pocket.
LGBT Specific Barriers to Treatment
These same issues affect the LGBT community, but they are compounded by cultural and social factors. In addition to grappling with shortage of care and preventative costs, members of this community also face the following barriers to getting treatment for drug and alcohol addiction:
Lack of Insurance: According to a recent Gallup poll, LGBT people are less likely to be insured than non-LGBT identifying individuals, making it impossible for many of them to afford routine medical care, much less highly specialized addiction treatment.
Financial Disparities: The Williams Institute, of the University of California Los Angeles School of Law, found that on average, LGBT individuals make less in the workplace than their heteresexual, cisgender counterparts. Unemployment and poverty rates are particularly high among transgender people. With less financial resources, many members of the LGBT community can’t afford things like drug and alcohol addiction treatment, or may only have access to sub-par, underfunded public programs.
Social Isolation and Rejection: Part of successful recovery comes from having a strong support network of friends and family. Unfortunately, members of the LGBT community are:
1. More likely to be estranged from or rejected by their family members and friends. 2. More likely to experience abuse from those close to them. 3. More likely to be homeless (especially at a young age.)
Without these support networks, seeking treatment in the midst of active addiction is even more difficult…In addition to these logistical concerns, some of the barriers to treatment for the LGBT community are cultural and social. Most significantly, this community faces a lack of access to quality treatment and poor medical care as the result of a lack of knowledge regarding their specific needs.
Lack of Access to Quality Treatment
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) says that effective treatment should follow several principles. Included in these guidelines are the stipulations that:
Treatment should address clients’ social, medical, psychological, vocational and legal problems
Behavioral therapy is a part of treatment, and this includes family counseling, peer support, and group therapy.
The problem with all of these important parts of addiction treatment for the LGBT community is that this population often faces inadequate care and medical professionals that don’t understand their needs or properly meet them.
“Treatment should address clients’ social, medical, psychological, vocational and legal problems”
Clinical staff may be well-trained in dealing with the legal and vocational needs of clients. But what about gay or lesbian clients who face workplace discrimination? Oftentimes there is no network of care equipped to help these clients seek gainful employment in a safe work environment. Without knowledge of the needs of LGBT clients, how can a case manager direct them toward an LGBT-friendly workplace, for example?
And what about transgender clients, who often have changed their legal name or wish to be referred to by a name other than their given name? These issues are deeply personal and affect the psychological health of people in this population. Without adequate education about how to avoid misgendering clients, or how to help them navigate the legal quagmire of dealing with court appearances after legally changing their gender, clinical staff will fall short of providing comprehensive treatment.
In order to help LGBT clients form social support and relationships, therapists and treatment staff need to have a thorough understanding of the impact of rejection, homophobia, and fear on someone’s social and emotional health. Truly being able to treat these concerns requires training and experience in dealing with them, which clinical staff does not always have at every facility.
“Behavioral therapy is a part of treatment, and this includes family counseling, peer support, and group therapy.”
Family therapy and group therapy may also be tough. Given the levels of estrangement and homelessness in the LGBT community, having family counseling sessions may not even be an option. Peer support may also be inadequate at facilities where LGBT people may feel that their fellow patients can’t relate to their life experience or struggles.
Facing These Barriers
Ultimately, drug and alcohol addiction is a complex disease of physical, psychological, and social elements. For a community that experiences higher levels of isolation, less access to financial resources, and a greater risk of social problems as the result of rejection from interpersonal networks, addiction can become even more complex to treat. And these same factors make accessing that treatment even more difficult.
In order to offer the LGBT community effective treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, as every person who suffers from substance abuse deserves, we have to recognize these unique factors and take steps to address them.
