arachnophobia ch 5 notes
chapter title
from 'fire and ice' by nova twins.
quote
from alfred tennyson's idylls of the king
spoken by guinevere, a another famous gwen in literature, who is also the beautiful blonde love interest of the hero, whose relationship ends tragically, who falls for the wrong guy (one of her husband's friends) and is remembered… controversially for it.
(by controversially i mean when the kingdom falls her husband blames it on her affair. like that makes sense.)
in context this line is guinevere meeting with lancelot one last time as shit blows up, and denying his request that they hide away together, so she can seek redemption on her own. which is what happens in this chapter.
lancelot is hobie. he's the friend of the hero, miles, who the hero's designated love interest, gwen, is drawn to instead. and if the hero's friend and the hero's love interest fall for each other instead, it will be treated as a betrayal with most of the blame landing on the love interest's shoulders, even if the love interest and the hero were never together in the first place (it basically is already; just look at how the fandom reacts to the thought of gwen and hobie together).
gwen's arrival
interdimensional jet lag is a thing: notice how it's twilight on 1610 but midday on 50101 and 928, and the middle of the night on 65?
orb web: the geometric shape of the society portal most resembles one.
in the comics, the vulture yeets gwen into a garbage barge. fond memories.
garbage strikes in the uk in the mid to late 70s are arguably the spark that started punk culture in the country.
if you look closely in hobie's intro, fisk is the prime minister, not osborn, who's the fascist president of his comics counterpart's world.
venom, in hobie's world, is a riot armor worn by specialized police sent in to break up demonstrations.
it's real telling that gwen finds a fascist dictatorship safer than her own home. i figure that hobie would find that significant too.
in the 616 comics, gwen goes to london after her father dies to get away from her grief, before returning because she misses her friends and peter. in the amazing spider-man movies, she nearly goes to oxford, but stays in part bc of her relationship with peter. if she'd stayed in/gone to london, she'd have lived. very significant that the spider-man who gives gwen her freedom happens to be from there.
at this point gwen thinks she's going to die by glitching out. she has no portal watch and no reason to think she'll get another. (she's not thinking clearly enough to consider hobie might loan her his, and even if it did cross her mind, she wouldn't accept it.)
in the script for the first issue of gwen's comics, it's discussed that they want her world to have the vibe of 'it's not a watchmen-style police state yet, but it could be in a few years, and that's part of gwen's motivation for wearing the mask' --- and throughout the latour run, gwen's world's cops, courts and government are deeply corrupt, and gwen constantly opposes them. one would think that 138 would be of particular interest to gwen as a potential outcome for her world.
howard the duck is president in earth-65. yes, it's a trump analog.
alliteration is fun, so all the places gwen looks for hobie start with the letter c:
cellar: mattea murdock is 138's daredevil. since she's blind, she gets to live in a basement. and it's a basement, so the acoustics are probably great, so the band probably practices there.
the coleherne: in the 70s, it was a leather bar. rick is the romantic partner of karl/138-captain-america. it's not mentioned in the fic explicitly, but i think of hobie as queer. him hanging out in a leather bar was a nod to that, though hobie seems like he'd have no issue chilling in a gay bar (or beating up bigots) regardless. also, a reference to hanging around, which was on loop while writing this chapter.
canal: concept art has hobie living in a boat. if he lives in a boat, he needs somewhere to park it, preferably close to his home neighborhood. and what do you know, there are canals near camden.
catacombs: the camden catacombs. figured they'd be a good place to hide a fugitive.
community center: in the comics, hobie operates out of one in brooklyn. i figure it's where movie hobie might have spent some of his nights, and would be a backup place to live.
gwen lands just after sundown to give her time to websling all the way from peckham to camden looking in all these places.
movie-138's art style is a beautiful collage, reminiscent of zines.
gwen's dragging her hands on it because in a few days she'll be molecules. those handprints might be the last trace of her.
the spider-slayers are hobie's band. supposedly, he named them that without their permission.
comics-gwen's gone to rock shows and jumped into the pit when she was depressed. small homage to that here.
hobie's theme song is real. supposedly he's the one who wrote it, and he sings it to himself bc he's a dork.
mindy is 616 hobie brown's wife. here, she's a former flame.
mattea murdock in the comics is from philly. i went with peckham because alliteration.
there's no way gwen wouldn't have started looking at every girl who has a first name starting with 'm' with even the vaguest romantic connection to a spider-man who's into her, without thinking 'you don't happen to have a middle name starting with j, do you?'
even though gwen doesn't want to compete for a guy (especially not miles, who she doesn't even want to be with), she's still anxious about being replaced.
616 gwen dies in 1973. since hobie's world is in the late 70s (according to his mugshot), i figured it would work to keep the year of gwen's death the same. thus, she died in 1973. and since hobie was spider-punk for three years as of '78, he hadn't been bitten yet when she was killed.
and if hobie encountered her in 1970-73, he'd have been 10-13. no way would a preteen be confident enough to talk to a musician who'd be in her late teens at the youngest.
(138 gwen and hobie have the same age difference as 65 gwen and hobie; with her being 6-7 years his senior. huh)
her importance to him isn't romantic. it's parasocial. she's an idol of his who gave him the punk values he now lives by.
hobie brown adores gwen stacy's music and considers her a massively influential punk. given he's so counterculture, i doubt his idol would be selling out stadiums or playing to large crowds.
since punk was arguably born in the uk in the mid-70s garbage strikes, that puts the birth of the subculture at the exact same time hobie, the Punk, was bitten by his spider. interesting parallel.
punk is anger given purpose. lots of people who come to the subculture come angry, seeking a way to channel it. i figure hobie, being a homeless boy without a family, would probably have done that.
what's most vital about the gwen problem isn't not having a gwen to compare her to-- it's being able to get over that comparison (or, in spider-man terms: getting back up after you fall). miles and pav were untested and naive. peter, jess and miguel wouldn't let go of their respective gwens. hobie adapted and changed his behavior-- that's what makes him stand out to her.
meeting hobie
i figure being tipsy in 138 probably makes the world look like a perspiring glass ring on paper. and being tipsy in 65 would color things booze-yellow. combined here.
small bands tend to hang out with their crowds after concerts, especially in the punk scene.
wendy darling is the protagonist of the novel/film/story, peter pan.
soho: at this point would have been full of crime, particularly sex work. i think hobie would've hung around there in his modeling days.
soho, the spitalfields, hackney and hampstead: all neighborhoods in north london, which is hobie's stomping ground.
specifically, he's from camden, which is where punk refined as a sound. camden is to hobie like brooklyn is to miles and queens is to peter.
and hobie's world looooves him. they love him enough to make him the face of their revolution and won't stop loving him after his identity's revealed. to gwen, whose world hates her, that'd probably be a bit painful.
hobie's stopping gwen from drinking any further.
according to lace code, the color blue means you've killed a police officer. hobie having blue laces + being defensive when miles asks about his captain's death = he killed his captain.
if the other elements of that event are at play children in danger, a fight between the spider and an enemy, falling debris), then i can't imagine hobie killing a cop who's trying to save kids. therefore, the cop was probably the one putting the kids in danger, and hobie killed him to protect them. maybe he dropped debris on his head, maybe the debris fell on its own, and hobie took a brick and made sure the cop wouldn't get up.
hobie brown is a killer in the comics too. dude's the top enforcer of the Murder Is Okay faction of the spider-squad.
karl morningdew is comics-hobie's best friend
hobie's mask is the face of a revolution. that revolution probably puts a lot of pressure on him to always wear that face.
basically, hobie was already on the trail of his brother when he ran into him while being arrested. the records just confirmed it in a comics-like coincidence.
616 hobie's family situation: father was drafted and killed when he was a baby, mom became an alcoholic, his eight older siblings raised each other. adapted that here.
all hobie's siblings except for abe aren't named in canon. i'm gonna explain it as 'hobie was split from them so young he genuinely doesn't remember anyone but abe, because abe was his favorite.'
in this fic, i'm adding the element of: the state intervened and took the kids from their mother, split them up and sent them various places. hobie eventually ran away and ended up on the streets, probably around age 11-13.
hobie was born around 1960, putting his parents at the right age to be windrushers.
abe in 616 is a z-list martial artist antihero. since hobie's adapted from a 616 antivillain to a 138 antihero, i'm applying the same shift to abe. now he's an antivillain. and since villains in hobie's world are connected to the fascist government, and abe would've been a poor kid in the system, him becoming a cop felt the most organic way to make him a hand of the state while preserving the martial angle.
also a great way to give hobie conflict. you hate cops? oh shit, now your brother, the only family you've managed to find, is one. good luck with that!
hobie's a deep believer in his revolution's cause. he's also a teenage boy with no family, who wants people to care about him. very easy for that need to be exploited by adults in his cell.
it also gives him commonality with gwen, and her something she can coach him through. i want their relationship to be reciprocal, not just him mentoring her.
fandom salt: hobie's lectures are always right and his heart's in the right place. but gwen stacy does not need a man telling her why patriarchy is bad. she gets it better than he ever will.
fandom salt: everyone focuses so much on spider-punk that they’re neglecting hobie brown. inverse of the pav problem. yes, he’s a brave anarchist hero. he’s also a teenage boy who is capable of vulnerability, fear, anxiety, insecurity, arrogance and loneliness.
hobie notices gwen's watch is gone when he touches her wrist. at this point he knows she’s out of the society.
i figure hobie probably gets the notifications from the society, but just ignores them unless gwen or pav are explicitly mentioned. so he knew shit was going down and just left them on read.
the houseboat
according to concept art, hobie lives on a houseboat. i went with a canal boat, bc it's the most maneuverable.
hobie's leaving the watch at the door because he doesn't want to be overheard.
those engineering textbooks are going to be used to make the watch later. 616 hobie's also a tech genius.
if gwen is wendy darling, and neverland is the spider-society, and miguel/peter/miles are peter pan, then hobie is captain hook, the outlaw who lives on a boat, is neverland's biggest threat and whose antagonist is represented with a clock/watch face.
hobie's various sleeping spaces include the community center cot (from the comics), a bedsit, the spider-van (comics), a tent, various squats (comics). gwen's been around for the cot and the bedsit. and yes, comics-hobie named it the spider-van.
since hobie's transient, him staying in one place for a while is notable. makes more sense when you consider that if he knows someone's going to be sleeping over at his often, he should probably have a stable address for her to be able to find.
(he's also a teenage boy. if a teenage boy knows a girl he likes is going to be spending a lot of time at his, he's going to want a space to be alone with her)
and truly. comics-hobie, do not sleep surrounded by tons of people if you're the fascist government's most wanted. dumb idea.
gwen has trouble asking for help, because she's a spider, and because she's a gwen who doesn't want to be considered helpless.
i love a good heroes-patch-each-other-up scene. ideal for gwen to be mentally undressing and unloading her troubles, as it happens physically.
anyway hobie's been Avoiding The Breakup Drama for the past few months. dude does not want to be involved.
(but he’s on gwen’s side. putting aside the personal bias— he simply knows her better than miles— that shit was entrapment, and she was the one who recognized that. she’s also the one who was going to be harmed more by it.)
and he and miles have a great dynamic... but let's be real, no 15 year old boy who had his heart stomped on by his crush is gonna hang out with the guy he thinks his crush left him for, no matter how good an influence the guy is. hobie doesn't want to take sides, but miles picks them for him.
hobie being so hands-off with gwen is a side effect of his watch part heist. gotta be subtle to stick around long enough to pull it off. consequence being: he can't step in when miguel's being abusive, or directly tell gwen she needs to get out. consequence being: she's getting hurt and doesn't think he can help her, and he feels guilty.
he is also assuming at this point that their hookup situation is coming to an end, and that gwen arrived to tell him that.
ok, mask off: hobie and gwen's vibe is n o t p l a t o n i c. those two were fucking. girls don't leave a toothbrush and multiple articles of clothing at a guy's place unless they're sleeping with him, or intend to sleep with him. she's literally wearing his shoes, and he didn't give them to her, and she's flustered when he points them out, which means that gwen was at hobie's, in a state of undress, throwing clothes on fast, and his clothes were tangled up with hers. your honor, they were exploring each others bodies.
they have similar interests, worldviews and politics. they've fought together for dozens of missions and hung out in their civvies. they're lonely and they care deeply. and they have no adults around. obviously something happened.
one of the big questions surrounding spider-gwen is whether she'll ever be able to fall in love with spider-man without dying or sacrificing her autonomy for him, or if she'll have to essentially be a nun in order to keep her narrative.
the movie at least acknowledges that she should be allowed to love spider-man and live, so points there.
look if the spider-society's invested in gwen being spiderman's gf, they're gonna have Opinions about spider-gwen's romantic life. they're gonna insist she can only date a few preapproved respectable guys. and inevitably, she's going to be expected to have sex with them.
fandom salt: guys. why the fuck would the anarchist who resents canon and power structures be all 'oh no gwen, i must refuse your advances, your sexuality belongs to some guy i barely know.' if she asked him to fuck her, he'd say yes.
to a girl for whom being a girlfriend will always mean death or disempowerment, a boy who actively refuses labels and keeps his relationships unhierarchal would be very attractive.
anyway in this fic, gwen and hobie started hooking up, and agreed not to label their relationship, or call attention to it. equal parts disdain for the trappings of a relationship and sidestepping what canon dictates will happen to it. and they're past the point of casual, but can't admit it.
dude's cool with gwen having other partners, and would have been fine and not at all jealous if she wanted to end the relationship and go back to being friends. but man does he not want to end it.
(more conflict: hobie’s ideology clashing with his feelings. uh oh, you caught them anyway. now what?)
so after he clears the air on that, time to talk about the watch.
hobie's looking at the amps because he's thinking about assembling that watch so gwen can get away from miguel.
he thinks at this point that gwen was kicked out of the society. she has to correct him.
how does hobie know about miles's venom blasts? how does he do THAT with his guitar? well, they're both prowlers in alternate timelines. maybe electric hands are a prowler power.
(interesting that spiderverse gwen has a type: artistic, kind, heroic black boys with a dark side who are at risk of becoming the prowler.)
star wars would've just come out in hobie's timeline. that boy probably saw it a ton.
hobie doesn't trust miguel alone with gwen for a lot of reasons. he comes from a world where the worst abuses of power are commonplace, as an ex-model he knows what happens when teenagers are isolated from their peers, made to work like adults and surrounded by grown-ups who are attracted to them, and miguel has a certain vibe with her (being that gwen has been both his love interest and daughter in different timelines, which he would be aware of) that hobie wants to keep an eye on.
aka when gwen turns up unexpectedly after being totally missing for a week with claw marks on her face and waist, bruises on her hip, ripped thighs and defensive wounds on her hands, and she’s mysteriously out of the society after a late night conflict with miguel that she's antsy about discussing, hobie’s first assumption is that gwen was sexually assaulted but managed to escape. and, given that she's been withdrawn, evasive and skittish about intimacy for months after the miles rejection, that it might have been happening even before tonight. he’s put it together by now that this didn’t happen, but that was his first thought.
65a gwen directly killing her peter is one of the most important beats of her character. i'm very salty that 65b gwen was denied the ability to do that. its why 65a gwen's so compassionate towards her villains, and pulls so many of her punches. 65b gwen never learned those lessons.
65b gwen is taking on more of her comics counterpart's characterization as the fic progresses. she's getting clumsier, more foul-mouthed, more compassionate.
houseboat ii
hobie is the prowler on 616.
and punk's the only spider-hobie. that's the one chance he gets to be something other than a villain. i figure the society would hold that over him.
and that hobie wouldn't blink at all the alternates. he's too affirmed in his own identity.
65-hobie is a preteen in a street gang who tags construction sites to protest gentrification. he actually teaches gwen about that and has a mini-arc in the latour run where he gains respect for her. good kid.
now that miles is so popular, all the new prowlers are variations on aaron davis. so in a sense, because of miles, prowler hobie brown was left behind.
but as of the spiderverse comics events and movie, the definitive hobie is spider-punk, and he couldn't have existed in the first place if miles morales hadn't been such a success and proved that other spider-men (black spider-men) could be accepted. so in a way, miles is also the reason hobie gets to be the hero of his own story.
hobie being a mentor to miles is a great concept. especially if they bond over being prowler-alternates.
gwen's a standin for white girls, miles for brown boys: consider how the society responds to them: it lures her in and promises her a seat at the table, while stripping her autonomy and walling her up inside it (... and as a queer girl, tells her to repress her feelings and stick to the heteronormative). it stonewalls miles and freezes him out unless he follows a white guy's playbook.
hobie's fallible. when he first joined and heard his favorite musician gwen stacy was in the lobby, his nonconformist ass decided to stick around... and after their interaction re: the gwen death canon, he kept sticking around, since the entire reason he's in the society is to be close to her. yes, it was to help her escape, but he still gave the society a lot of time and labor in the interim. it worked.
that's one of the advantages of having gwen in the society. she's a lure to spiders on the fence about joining or who doubt about the mission.
'what does it matter what we want if everyone else already decided what we get to be' -- big theme here. does it matter if gwen and hobie's relationship isn't based on traditional patriarchal ideas about relationships, if everyone else assumes she's His Girlfriend? and how can gwen redefine her narrative if no one will let her?
more first aid
again, i like that the trans coding made gwen's ballet subversive again. now she's raiding the ultimate form of femininity for the tools to make herself a girl, instead of being femmed up to appeal to a male love interest.
hobie's modeling stint is intriguing. guy's canonically extremely physically attractive, aware of it, and was at least at one point willing to use it to get ahead.
and he's adept at using aesthetics to communicate his message (re his politics) and throw suspicion off himself (everyone in the society writes him off as all bark, no bite, in no small part because of the way he dresses himself). i figure he probably learned about that from his time in the fashion industry.
616 manny lopez is a little boy hobie brown mentored, who was killed in a gang conflict. adapted here as a younger boy hobie felt protective of, who died while hobie was in his use-powers-irresponsibly phase, probably his time as a model. manny's his uncle ben, so to speak. idk if manny's a kid from the neighborhood who was killed or if a fellow model who fell prey to the skeevier parts of the industry. regardless, he ends up dead because hobie went partying when he should've been looking after him, hobie took this loss hard, and it motivated him to quit and start using his powers to protect his community.
hobie's tendency to put his foot in his mouth is a fun character flaw. dude, you're right, but read the room.
especially when it comes to the canon. he might hate it, but it gives him everything he wants. his resentment of it is not the same as gwen's.
which is why his disillusionment has to be triggered by her: it's an expansion of his worldview, to understand that just because he gets what he wants from it doesn't mean it's good.
hobie and gwen are both doomed by the narrative to die young. one would think they'd bond over that.
hobie's guilty about not wanting to die young. dude's an idealist, who doesn't want to die for the cause. of course it'll eat at him. it IS selfish. but just because it's selfish doesn't mean it's bad.
hobie's a revolutionary. he's also a person, a teenage boy. he's going to want to have things that don't revolve around the cause. things like a personal life, with friends and a romantic partner.
the 'no future' song (god save the queen, by the sex pistols) and ideology would resonate a lot with a girl who literally doesn't have one.
it's weird as hell that in itsv gwen is in 1610 for a week and doesn't glitch for most of that time, when peter is there for like a day and he's already fuzzy.
this is the depression stage of grief. gwen thinks she's going to die, and is evaluating things in those terms: wanting miles and hobie to make up, wanting margo to replace her so at least the group won't have a girl-shaped hole in it, wanting to drink and dance and leave her mark on a world she thinks she won't see again. and seeing someone who means a lot to her, one last time.
she's come to the one person who won't judge her for her mess, and who she knows is capable of avenging her.
and no, it's not enough of a change for her to choose the spider-man who avenges her. but she's cornered, and she's taking what she can.
most of all, gwen's here for comfort. it's why she lets him patch her up even though her healing factor's got it and she'll be dead in days as far as she knows.
the subtext intended here is that gwen and hobie are definitely not casual about their intimate relationship anymore, and their feelings are running deep, but haven't quite tipped over into full-on love yet. they especially haven't admitted it to themselves or each other.
hobie absolutely is thinking 'i can save you' but he gets that it isn't what she wants to hear.
he's fully dressed because he's not going to fall asleep-- he's heading right into his allnighter to get the watch done.
the watch
the burst of light is hobie testing the watch. it works.
gwen slept to the afternoon; girl had a busy day yesterday.
gwen's dressing herself in things that remind her of people she loves: shoes that both belong to hobie and remind her of 65a gwen, a shirt that belonged to gayatri, a cuff that was pavitr's, a sweater she probably got from hobie, and her hair's still in the cut miles caused.
hobie making the watch for her birthday WAS a happy accident. that's how my timeline ended up by mistake. it works!
very telling that in the movie, hobie only makes two watches. one for him, one for gwen.
one of the best things about movie hobie is how methodical and cunning he is. dude pretends to be spontaneous, but everything he says and does is carefully thought out.
the watch construction is all the more impressive when you consider that hobie has to work with tech from 100+ years in the future.
in the movie, hobie was only at the society to keep gwen safe. as soon as 1) he had what he needed to make the watches, and 2) she left-- he'd have quit. which is what happens.
the appeal of hobie isn't that he's a hot bad boy. it's that he gives a shit about gwen's problems and wants to help her solve them, but not at the cost of her being able to make her own choices. it drives me insane how good he is at walking that tightrope.
he's the one that gets how to solve the gwen problem: help her, yes, but only when she can't help herself. and only then, with the goal of getting her to a place where she can help herself.
gwen's hugging him to stop herself from kissing him.
even though hobie won't make her subservient to him in his narrative, nobody else will see it that way if she stays. to them, she's just slumming it with a subpar spider-man. which is why she can't kiss him right now.
yes, gwen can fall in love with spider-man without dying or losing her autonomy... but she can only do that AFTER she obtains her independence and uses it to advance her own story.
gwen-138 died 'epically' by punk's standards. so she probably went down in a clash with the fascists... and since the cops are an arm of the fascists, and george stacy is a cop... one must assume if that's still the case and he hadn’t died yet, george either was complicit in or responsible for his daughter's death.
and if george was the captain... then hobie not only killed gwen's dad, but avenged her death, something basically none of the spiders end up doing.
i went with that hc because of how well it suited the fic. perfect way to discuss hobie's backstory, tie it back in to gwen 138 and gwen 65, and give gwen 65 the kick she needs to want to engage with gwenom.
the implications gwen's absorbing: a version of my dad killed a version of me so it could get that bad if i go home, my new friend who i'm attracted to killed a version of my dad, who i still love... and a spider-man actually avenged me.
look there's no way that a teenage girl who's told over and over that ~we sure can't get retribution for your murder because of Our Precious Morals~ wouldn't find a handsome boy who actually did avenge her extremely attractive.
in my mind this is the moment gwen decided she wanted to fuck him. she realized those hands got the job done, and wanted them on her. that's why she took down the barrier. it was always possible for things to go that way, but that was the moment she decided to make it definitive.
this fic is t-rated, so that's as far as i was willing to take it. but in my head, their relationship became sexual a short time afterwards. not that night, but within the next few days.
65b gwen wants to talk to 65a gwen. she's finally ready to do it.
the violence she's considering is a prison break, bc at this point she thinks gwenom is still incarcerated.
time for a classic comics gwen emotional speech!
reciprocity again: not only does gwen teach hobie that canon sucks, but that dying young isn't attractive and you should want to live long. and that not everybody in a corrupt system is terrible; most of the people in it are just as downtrodden, and could use empathy and help. things he can apply to his own world, personal life and narrative for the better. he can live long, make more friends, rebuild his family, and form a bigger coalition for his revolution, which means it'll be more successful.
the hand-catch is a reference to their first meeting in the comics. that panel of him clutching her hand lives in my head.
again, hobie gets it: don't fight gwen's battles for her, but offer your support and jump in if she asks for it.
my goal was make this chapter as romantic as possible without a kiss.
gwen lands in 65a.
end quote
from seanan mcguire's ghost-spider run. issue 4, again.
spoken by hobie to gwen during noir's funeral, which they facilitate together. one of the prime gwobie moments of the comics.
because no, she should not have to fight her battles alone. and she's currently on her way to find someone who can do it with her.

The Decoy God
Part I: In which you meet Loki, the God of Mischief.
Pairing: Loki x F!Reader
Warnings: *All of my works are M for mature so 18+ please; language, not much else yet! just kind of propping this up for now!
Word Count: 2K
Day 4 of the FFWC2022, Movie of Your Choice (The Decoy Bride) AU
A/N: Some notes: 1. go watch the decoy bride, it has David Tennant and it remains my favorite romcom of all time, it is not *that* good AND I don't care, watch it. 2. I plan to do the other prompts I missed, but being in school FT, working FT, and being a person means I drop the ball a lot. 3. this is going to be an undertaking, I think. This is just the beginning! Look for a part 2, and let me know if you want to be tagged. My tag list needs updating, but just let me know! Anyway, enjoy <3
Masterlist | Taglist | Part II
You walked down the small street, the wind whipping your hair furiously into your face. You grappled with it, cursing the harsh weather, before ducking into the local shop.
“Hiya Gwen.” You greeted the owner, an older woman perched on her stool. She nodded in return, smiling brightly as she tore her attention from her magazine.
“Morning. Didya hear about the old castle?” She asked, eyes glinting with mischief.
“No, ma’am. Just getting out this morning.” You told her, mirroring her devious grin. “What about the castle?” You couldn’t help the buzz of excitement that bubbled up, nothing ever happened on Hegg, an island in the Outer Hebrides, and you’d be damned to miss something juicy.
“Just an actual movie star getting hitched!” Gwen told you, nearly toppling off her stool. “Press’ll be here ‘fore too long, I imagine.” You felt your shoulders slump, your excitement melt off your face.
“Oh, great. I’ll just be down by the beach, if you need me.” You gave her some coins for the coffee, and grabbed a cup. The self-serve coffee was likely several hours old, and there’d be no creamer, but it was nice to see people during the day.
You spent your days studying the intertidal sediments and tracking ocean quahog. A quiet job, but one you were happy to take when your funding went belly-up a few years earlier. It helped, of course, that your fiance had decided at the same time that he preferred the company of anyone else.
You had to stop going after the artsy men.
So, to Heig you came, with no idea what you were getting into. It had underwhelmed you at first. The average age on the island was 65, and there wasn’t much to do. The people, though, had charmed you, welcomed you earnestly. The island itself was so stunning you didn’t mind it’s lack of modernity, if anything, you were growing to appreciate the walk backwards in time.
It was you, Hegg, and the Quahogs.
“Now, wait a minute, love. Don’t you want to see the celebrities?” Gwen asked, eyeing you curiously. You smiled, shaking your head.
“I don’t care about them, Gwen.”
“Oh, well, that’s that then.” You nodded and put your hand on the door to open it, but Gwen wasn’t through with you yet. “I suppose I’ll have to wait for the next youngin’ to come in and take this over to the castle.” You deflated, and marched back to her counter.
“Give it here, then.” You ordered, exasperation lacing your tone, and held your hand up. Gwen beamed brightly, and handed you a key. It was an antique.
“They’ll need that to get in.” Gwen told you conspiratorially, with a wink, and shooed you out. You huffed a laugh and waved, before shoving the brass key into your pocket. You sipped your old coffee, and took a left down the street.
Normally, you’d hang a right, grab a pastry from the bakery next door, and then head down to the beach. This way, to the left, took you past the town, up the hill, and to the old castle on the outskirts of the village. It was old, mostly in ruins, and had to be disgusting inside, not exactly what you’d call an ideal nuptial venue. You guessed someone the couple employed had searched empty+old+castles and picked the first one they saw.
The village had dirt roads throughout, not many cars anyway, but they were maintained. There was care put into them, ditches dug to avoid flooding, regular maintenance to avoid big muddy gullies. The road to the castle was not so lucky. It was washed out, rutted up, and all together a pain in the ass to climb.
You were halfway from the top when a car came barrelling down the path, straight for you. You hurried out of the way, and in your haste fell to the ground, tripping over the marsh grass. As you hauled yourself up, cussing and wiping the mud from your hands, you noticed the car backing up to you.
Your reflection looked back at you in the car’s back passenger window, muddy and scowling, before it was rolled down to reveal a couple in the backseat.
“Girl, are you from here?” The man asked, his voice snarky and hateful.
“Close enough.” You told him, hoping you sounded more venomous than you did.
“Great, where’s the castle?” The woman asked, leaning forward from the far side. You pointed up the path, and cleared your throat.
“You just follow this road, it’s at the end. Hard to miss. Congrats on your big day.” You told them, feeling more awkward than anything. They exchanged a look and  started laughing.
“Oh no! We’re not getting married. You seriously don’t know? Someone already called the press.” The man told you, conspiratorially, in a hushed voice.
“Nope, no idea.”
“Hm. It’s Olivia Bunde and Loki Laufeyson, the most influential, power couple of twenty twenty two.” The woman chirped, never looking away from her phone that she’d been holding.
“Okay, well, they’ll need this to get into the castle.” You dismissed, flipping the key into the backseat and turning on your heel.
At first, you were, at best, apathetic to the marriage. You really had had no feelings of ill will, despite the disruption to your newly calm life. But now, now that the wedding party had caused you to fall, had mocked you for not caring about the lives of people in a different tax bracket, now you were pissed.
You stomped down the hill, the day looming more like a fog over you, and headed home. At the very least, you needed to wash your hands and face of the mud, and then you could head to the beach.
When you pulled the door to your small home, you were greeted with the smell of an extinguished peat fire and it settled your bones. It had taken some time to get used to the earthy smell, but soon you’d stopped noticing how it clung to your clothes, your hair, and the air around the village. After a long day in the brine, the smell of a peat fire lured you in from the cold, a reverse siren that called from a toasty room with an overstuffed chair.
You splashed your face quickly, washed up, and then headed back outside. You’d wasted so much time, your daily counts already ruined. You’d have to detail all of this in your log book, which was tucked safely in your backpack. Thankfully, during your spill in the ditch, you had landed, ever so gracefully, onto your side and not your back.
As you walked to the shore, you hummed a folk song, something always in the background at the pub. The further you went, the more your mind drifted away from the work to be done right to the couple. You knew the name Olivia Bunde, you were sure of it. A drop dead gorgeous woman who had made a name for herself, who had captured the hearts of America (i.e. the ‘world’), and who was apparently getting married in a dump. It didn’t add up. She was loaded, she could probably rent out the Palace of Versailles. Why a remote island?
You padded carefully down the small slope to the beach, gravel crunching under your waders. You paused at the water's edge, and pulled your bag over to dig through for your journal. After fishing out your pen, you began scribbling the boring details of your morning. This kind of metadata was disappointing: missed the checks, missed the digs, missed everything.
You sighed and clicked your pen, it wasn’t like the work you were doing was vital. You could stop checks for a week and no one would fuss. Quahogs weren’t high on the list of ecological niches that the organization that signed your funding checks cared about. Still, they did cut you a check, and you were fine with it.
“I’m sorry, I’m actually quite lost, could you help?” You turned to face the voice you didn’t recognize and were met with a handsome stranger. His black hair was messy from the relentless wind and his eyes were bright and inviting. His nose had a severe slope that matched his flawless skin, he appeared to be carved from marble. His beauty was jarring against the backdrop of the beach.
“Oh, s-sure.” You managed, stuttering. His face split in half, a devastating smile. It crinkled his eyes and his nose, a truly joyous expression.
“Marvelous. A woman I met earlier would not.” He told you, his voice lilting with a posh English accent.
“Ah, in the shops?” You asked, knowing that Gwen would have sent him your way.
“Yes, in fact. She said you’d take me to the castle. It was most peculiar, actually. She knew right where you’d be.” He mused, a curious grin pulling his lips up.
“Yes, sure. Come on.” You grunted, shouldering your bag and making your way up the slope. You’d kill that woman, right on her stool. You were not the only person on this stupid rock.
“I appreciate your help.” The man told you, sensing your irritation. You exhaled softly before slowing to meet his eyes.
“It’s alright. I really don’t mind. It’s just that my day has been completely derailed for this stupid wedding. And now, I finally get settled and some paparazzi needs directions. I think it’s kind of shitty you followed these guys, clearly they didn’t want you here.” You gripped your backpack straps a little tighter, and the man chuckled. The sound was like honey, dripping down your spine.
“Well said! But you don’t know who I am, do you?” His eyes were gleaming curiously, a deep emerald, a dark contrast to his pale skin.
“Can’t say I keep up with who sells pics to tabloids, sorry.” He was practically beaming now.
“I’m Loki! The groom, yes! I had a call to take, and it seems Liv has ran off somewhere. You, you are so genuine. It’s interesting. You would have delivered the paparazzi to the castle?” You shrugged, his smile not faltering at all, if anything it seemed to grow larger.
“Terrific. Take me to the castle, yes? There’ll be money in it for you.”
“Okay, come on then.” You shrugged, turning back down the path. You were only a few minutes in when Loki groaned behind you. You threw a look over your shoulder and found him nearly pressed to his phone screen.
“Is there truly no service here?” He asked, the desperation already leaking into his words. You laughed, a dry chuckle.
“None. Even the damn satellites miss us.” He closed his eyes in frustration. “Big business? Big celebrity business?” You teased dryly.
“You have no idea what I do to be famous, do you?” He asked, amused.
“None. Enlighten me, please.” You snarked, walking backwards in front of him. You’d made it to the edge of town, and you knew the villagers would be peering out of their windows at you now.
“I am a god.” He replied dryly. You rolled your eyes before turning back around.
“Sure, and I’m from another planet.” You joked back, except you couldn’t hear his footsteps anymore. When you turned around he had halted completely. You walked back to him.
“I’m completely serious.” He told you, a new firmness in his voice.
“Me too, Loki, God of…didn’t catch that part, sorry.” His face washed of the prior jovialness.
“I am Loki, Prince of Asgard, Rightful King of Jotunheim, and God of mischief.” He announced the words, a carefully practiced speech. You shook your head.
“Okay, Mr. Prince-God-Sir, you just follow that path all the way up, then you’ll hit the castle.” You instructed, making sure he followed the simple list.
“You are insolent.” He snarled at you as he passed, and you rolled your eyes. Another insane person, just what this island needed. You’d be sure to thank Gwen for her continuous meddling in your love life.
“Have a good wedding, God of Mischief!” You called after him, adding a wave to finish the touch.
“Time for a drink.” You added, nearly under your breath.

Thinking back to how Omniverse really made an inconsiderate statement from Kai back in the original series and somehow managed to make that like 65% of her personality and relationship to Ben. Like her comments to train and tame Ben was weird but you know what I can excuse it cause she's like 10 and seeing a dude slowly turn into a wolf alien while also being nearly killed by one would be pretty freaky but to turn that into an obsession that she somehow kept when she was 10 is just bad.
Yeah overall I think omniverse did it’s female characters really dirty
And I agree about her comment, it wasn’t that bad for a kid to say. I’m pretty confident what she said just came out wrong, and she didn’t have the words for “furry roleplay” (b/c who would) so it sounded worse than she meant.
Btw I asked DJW on ask fm who created the designs for Gwen, Kevin, and Rook, and he only did the redesigns for Gwen and Kevin, and someone else did rook. It makes sense b/c rook’s design is actually good compared to Gwen and Kevin haha (I’m kidding I’m kidding I wanna be a part of the industry djw don’t blacklist me lol)

Hello! I was wondering if you had anything on Y Gododdin 😃
hey! fellow gododdin enthusiast! what a delight
i presume this is a request for reading recommendations - i don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, or how accessible these will be, but i’ve tried to cover most bases here. i WISH there were more literary criticism, maybe there is in the welsh-language scholarship and i just haven’t found it?
it’s entirely possible that i will have missed some obvious things here, i’m mostly sticking to stuff that i personally have read. if something mind-blowing has come out since the last time i did gododdin reading then it’s not here, i’m afraid!
but enough disclaimers. on to the recs!
text and translation:
for a translation, i cannot recommend enough joseph p. clancy’s translation as found in the triumph tree: scotland’s earliest poetry, 550-1350, ed. t. o. clancy (1998). this is fantastic. it’s poetic, it’s a joy to read, and having used it as part of a deep read last year where i went through the welsh text in detail i am honestly AMAZED regularly at how well clancy handles the many translation issues that arise. it’s loose, and it doesn’t translate every single stanza unfortunately, but for the spirit of the poem you really can’t do better
that said, if you need another translation to check against/to fill in the gaps, i’d recommend kenneth jackson’s the gododdin: the oldest scottish poem (1969). it’s a prose translation, so it’s harder to use in conjunction with the text, but it’s pretty clear and accurate
text-wise... things get complicated. honestly, the best edition is probably still ifor williams’ canu aneirin (1938), in terms of faithfulness to the words on the manuscript page. (i also really enjoy his textual commentary, but it is in modern welsh so not accessible to everyone.) the major problem with it is that you are not going to get the stanzas in the order they appear in the manuscript - he reorders them into groups of perceived variants. this also makes it harder to distinguish between the A-text and the B-text. AND it means that the stanzas are not in the same order as in any of the translations!
if you can get hold of it, i really really think it is worth having daniel huws’ llyfr aneirin: a facsimile (1989). the introduction is SO useful for understanding the manuscript context, and it comes with gwenogvryn evans’ transcription of the book of aneirin, which you can compare with williams’ edition if need be to work out where a stanza actually goes.
there’s a conspectus of editions which i think thomas owen clancy put together but i cannot for the LIFE of me remember where it is - if you think you’ll need it, PM me and i’ll see what i can do
dating, textual criticism and historicity:
t. m. charles-edwards, wales and the britons, 350-1064 (2013), chapter 11 - this is from more of a historical perspective than a strictly linguistic/palaeographical/dating perspective, but it’s a really good general introduction and i definitely recommend starting with it. if you read nothing else, read this. this whole book is a godsend
t. m. charles-edwards, 'the authenticity of the gododdin: an historian's view', in astudiaethau ar yr hengerdd, eds. bromwich and jones (1978), pp. 44-91 - this kind of lays out the standard view which everyone has been deconstructing ever since. we don’t know anything about what’s going on with y gododdin, but at one point we thought we did know something and this was what it looked like
d. n. dumville, 'early welsh poetry: problems of historicity', in early welsh poetry: studies in the book of aneirin, ed. b. f. roberts (1988) - and HERE is the deconstruction! a pretty good overview of the issues with “knowing anything” when it comes to y gododdin
p. sims-williams, 'dating the poems of aneirin and taliesin', zeitschrift für celtische philologie 36 (2016), 163-224 - i don’t have any notes on this and haven’t read it recently, but i remember it being good (it’s sims-williams so of course it is). almost certainly contains linguistics, but is probably also written readably
o. j. padel, 'aneirin and taliesin: sceptical speculations', in beyond the gododdin: dark age scotland in medieval wales, ed. a. woolf (2013), pp. 153-75 - if you can stand linguistics talk, padel does his best to make it understandable here and gives a good overview of the linguistic arguments for and against suggested dates for y gododdin. this whole book is actually very useful
g. r. isaac, 'canu aneirin awdl LI', journal of celtic linguistics 2 (1993), 65-91, AND 'readings in the history and transmission of the gododdin', cambrian medieval celtic studies 37 (1999), 55-78 - DEEP IN THE TEXTUAL CRITICISM. honestly, my poor attention span means i find it hard to pay attention all the way through these two, but if you want a really in-depth look at the possible relationships between the A and B-texts of y gododdin, this is the way to go
historical discussion and background:
charles-edwards in wales and the britons chapter 11 again
j. rowland, 'warfare and horses in the gododdin and the problem of catraeth', cambrian medieval celtic studies 30 (1995), 13-40 - this is a pretty cool look at the role of cavalry in y gododdin and while i don’t agree with all of it, i think it’s really useful reading if you’re going for a historical take on the poem
p. m. dunshea, 'the meaning of catraeth: a revised early context for y gododdin', in beyond the gododdin again, pp. 81-114 - makes some ESSENTIAL points re the question of: is catraeth catterick? moreover, IS CATRAETH A PLACE?
c. cessford, 'northern england and the gododdin poem', northern history 33 (1997), 218-22 - a historical perspective on the poem with some very useful points, comparing the situation as sketched out in y gododdin with what we know of the area at the time
m. wood, 'bernician transitions: place-names and archaeology', in early medieval northumbria: kingdoms and communities, AD 450-1100, eds. petts and turner (2011), pp. 35-70 - a welcome look at the archaeological and place-name evidence for what was going on in bernicia as it changed from a brittonic to a germanic-dominated area. really useful to have in mind both when reading the poem and when reading more literary history
r. collins, 'military communities and transformation of the frontier from the fourth to the sixth centuries', in the same book, pp. 15-34 - pretty fascinating look at the earlier background running up to the time period depicted in y gododdin, and the possibility of continuity between the roman occupation of hadrian’s wall and the post-roman era there. useful social/archaeological perspective!
f. h. clark, 'thinking about western northumbria', in the same book, pp. 113-28 - an early medieval english perspective on the area at the time, useful for comparison and completeness’ sake
literary discussion:
ifor williams, lectures on early welsh poetry (1944) and the beginnings of welsh poetry, ed. bromwich (1972, 2nd ed. 1980) - THE CLASSICS. an old-fashioned, not to say outdated, viewpoint, but that’s because this is the guy who INVENTED the viewpoint back when it was new! even now there’s a lot of good stuff packed into these and ifor williams’ prose style is a real pleasure to read. not to be missed
a. o. h. jarman, 'the heroic ideal in early welsh poetry', in beiträge zur indogermanistik und keltologie, ed. meid (1967), pp. 193-211 - likewise somewhat old-fashioned now, but lays out the classic viewpoint well and makes some good literary points. it may also be worth reading the introduction to his edition/translation, aneirin: the gododdin (1988). (i don’t recommend using it as an edition because he conflates the A and B texts and renders the text into modern welsh - this means it reads very smoothly but is quite a bit further away from what’s on the manuscript page.)
h. fulton, 'cultural heroism in the old north of britain: the evidence of aneirin's gododdin', in the epic in history ed. davidson, mukherjee and zlatar (1994), pp. 18-39 - a pretty interesting read, about the mindset expressed in the poetry, its purpose and its construction
this isn’t lit crit but i’m putting in my favourite g. r. isaac quote from his article ‘gweith gwen ystrat and the northern heroic age of the sixth century’, p. 69: ‘Koch writes that the Book of Aneirin’s ‘immediate milieu is… not the Celtic Heroic Age, but the High Middle Ages’, as if the ‘Celtic Heroic Age’ were a period of comparable historical status to the High Middle Ages. This is not the case, however. A ‘heroic age’ cannot be the ‘immediate milieu’ of any literary production, a ‘heroic age’ cannot produce literature, because a ‘heroic age’ is itself produced through literature (taken in the broadest sense). It is a literary product. The Homeric epics are not the product of  a Bronze Age Achaean heroic age, but vice versa. The Irish Ulster Cycle is not the product of an Iron Age, pre-Christian heroic age, but vice versa. And the medieval Welsh poems of ‘Aneirin’ and ‘Taliesin’ (and Triads, sections of the Historia Brittonum, and much else) are not products of a sixth-century North British heroic age, but vice versa.’
honestly there just is not nearly enough lit crit for y gododdin, in english at least, especially to explain cool shit that the welsh text is doing that isn’t visible in the translation, and/or things that could be subversive or ambiguous about it - so, i don’t know what your level of engagement with the medieval welsh text is, but if you’re curious, if you want to know more about what’s going on in a specific stanza (or which stanzas are extended puns), or just which things i’ve been dying to yell about all year, PLEASE message me and I! WILL! YELL!
articles which are almost certainly good and useful but it’s been too long since i’ve read them to say:
t. o. clancy, 'the kingdoms of the north: poetry, places, politics', in beyond the gododdin again, pp. 153-75
m. haycock, 'early welsh poets look north', likewise in beyond the gododdin, pp. 115-52
FINAL NOTE:
one of the problems with translations is that they give an impression of way more certainty about the meaning of the text... than is actually there. you’re pretty safe with clancy or kenneth jackson, but tread carefully. again, i don’t know your level of engagement with medieval welsh, but if you want to know if there are any major textual issues with a stanza, hmu and i will gladly consult my copious textual notes! but in general, BEWARE of basing anything too heavily on the following groups of stanzas:
A40, A41, B5, B6 (Am drynni drylaw drylenn; Clancy ‘For the feast, most sad, disastrous’)
A42, B25, B35 (Eur ar vur caer; Clancy ‘Gold on fortress wall’)
A48, B3, B24 (Llech leutu tud leudvre; Clancy ‘Standing stone in cleared ground’)
A62, B14, B15, B16, B36 (Angor dewr daen; Clancy ‘Anchor, Deifr-router’)
the Gorchanau if you’re interacting with those, especially the Gwarchan Maeldderw - if anyone tells you they know exactly what is going on in these, do not believe them. isaac has a full translation of the gwarchan maeldderw in cambrian medieval studies 44, and it’s useful, but i’m not by ANY means completely convinced by it, so tread carefully.
the more stanzas there are in a group of variants (or at least a group that shares lines), the more likely it is that those stanzas are going to be SUPER DUPER TEXTUALLY FUCKED UP, is a pretty good rule of thumb.

Were I to have an insane and unrealistic amount of power over at Marvel I’d re-organize the Spider-Man relevant trades. I share the belief that the hurdle to new readers isn’t so much that there is a long history so much as a history spread all over the place. Wanting to read Spider-Man isn’t simple even if you do have the time and patience to read 50 years worth of comics. You need to know WHICH comics and WHAT ORDER to read them in. And the latter has a multiple choice answer!
This is part of why USM was so strong in it’s early days. 1 title, no satellites, no spin-offs. All you needed to do was pick up issue #1 or trade volume 1 and read sequentially from there. Not just easy to follow but easy to catch up and thus allow readership to grow.
Thus I propose that we simply organize the Spider-Man brand into a series of sequential trades. Functionally these will be like the Deadpool Classic trades, but with multiple trades following the various characters of the Spider-Verse. Want to read just about Peter Parker, you pick up his trades. But want to read just about Miles or Venom? The trades will have you covered going across their respective histories in the in-universe reading order.
In other words you need not worry about whether story arc A in ASM happens before story arc B in Spec and where Guest appearance C fits in. The trades would sort it all out for you. You’d just pick up any volume and read cover to cover, with tiny subplot pages and text inserted where relevant to clarify things. E.g. if there were 2 three part stories happening at the same time, you don’t want to interrupt that, so you’d just print one then have some text saying ‘the following three issues take place during the events of the ASM #X-Z’.
Additionally, in order to not make things unnecessarily confusing I’d omit retroactive stories like Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Symbiote Spider-Man, etc from these trades. My rationale is that not only would these spoil certain things but more significantly as time goes by people will inevitably write more retroactive stories meaning the trades would need to be constantly amended.
Instead I’d simply make a ‘Companion’ trade series reprinting such stories in publication order with a few notes explaining where they take place relative to the original issues. E.g. you’d pick up ‘Peter Parker: Spider-Man Classic Companion Volume 1’ and before you read Untold Tales of Spider-Man #1 a note would inform you it happens after ASM #3 or whatever.
So what would these trade series be exactly?
Something like this:
1.       Peter Parker: Spider-Man Classic: Simply every Peter Parker appearance or relevant comic book. ASM, Spec, New Avengers, Secret Wars, guest appearances, everything!
2.       Mary Jane Classic: Same thing for Mary Jane, albeit to save some time we could simply reprint the MJ relevant pages from various comics as there would be little need to reprint a whole Spidey adventure she just cameos in. The info text could simply give you context for each appearance before we got to meatier stories. I’d employ this method for all of the following whenever relevant.
3.       Black Cat Classic: Obviously this would include her solo minis but also and team appearances like in Heroes for Hire.
4.       Daily Bugle Classic: It occurred to me there were several stories focussing upon a lot of the supporting cast that didn’t feature Spider-Man himself. That aside people love the supporting cast so I figured some trades chronicling their exploits would make sense. For this trade series it’d focus upon J. Jonah Jameson first and foremost but also Betty Brant, Joe Robertson, Ben Urich, etc
5.       The Many Loves of Spider-Man Classic: Same idea but with the Spidey girlfriends who don’t have that many appearances to their name. The main focus would be Gwen Stacy because for good or ill she’s a character who people are interested in. But you could also throw in appearances from Deb Whitman, Carlie, etc.
6.       Spider-Man’s Tangled Web: TBH I couldn’t figure out a good name for this one, but essentially this would be about Peter’s friends who aren’t superheroes, Bugle employees or girlfriends of his. This would include Flash Thompson (pre-Venom), Liz Allan, Randy Robertson, possibly Glory Grant although she’d also fit in with the Bugle trades I guess. Throw in the Tangled web issues and your good to go!
7.       Clone Classic: As you might expect this would chronicles Ben Reilly and Kaine’s exploits, but also for good measure ALL the clearly clone related stories. So we’re talking appearances involving Miles Warren and Gwen’s clone too. Although I guess the latter could fit in ‘the Many Loves of Spider-Man’ trades.
8.       Spider-Man’s Amazing Friends Classic: All of the superhero friends Spider-Man has who are closely associated with him and have had off and on titles over the years. Prowler, Silver Sable, Rocket Racer, Sandman (when he reformed), Jackpot, Alpha, Will O’ Wisp, etc
9.       Goblins Classic: I thought of doing a trade purely about the Osborns but this seemed more logical. It’d cover every appearance of the Goblin related characters. We’re talking Norman Osborn, Harry Osborn, Bart Hamilton, Roderick Kingsley, Ned Leeds, Jason Macendale, Phil Urich, Green Goblin V, Hobgoblin from Bendis’ Secret War, Gabriel+Sarah Stacy, Lily Hollister and whoever else will become a Goblin
10.   Doctor Octopus Classic: Speaks for itself, and yeah it’d include his clones from Superior onwards too.
11.   Symbiotes Classic: I thought of having this be about all the symbiotes OTHER than Venom and Carnage but having 3 sets of trades for symbiotes seemed ridiculous. This would cover every symbiote (Venom, Carnage, Hybrid, Scream, Toxin, Mania, Sleeper, etc) along with major hosts of theirs. Eddie Brock, Cletus Kasady, Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson, Andi Benton, etc
12.   Sinister Six Classic. Maybe you couldn’t call these guys A-listers strictly speaking but these would be the real famous Spider-Man villains who haen’t already been mentioned. We’re talking the Vultures, Electros, Kravens, Mysterios, Chameleon, all the really classic costumed Spidey bad guys you could think of with the exception of some of the folks I’m gonna name below
13.   The Many Foes of Spider-Man Classic: This would chiefly chronicle the stories about the characters from Deadly/Lethal/Superior Foes of Spider-Man, most importantly Boomerang, Beetle and Shocker
14.   Spider Women Classic: All the 616 centric Spider Ladies. Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter, Mattie Franklin, Cindy Moon, Anya Corazon, maybe even throw Madame Web in there for good measure. I think it makes sense to consolidate them together into a trade series as their publication histories meant they were usually passing the baton onto one another.
15.   Miles Morales: Spider-Man Classic: Guess who this is about. Obviously this would include his appearances in Champions, Avengers, etc
16.   Gwen Stacy: Ghost Spider Classic: Every Spider-Gwen/Ghost Spider/Earh-65 Gwen appearanceD
17.   Spider-Ham Classic: You get the picture. Although I’d also add in versions of Spider-Ham that are from different Earths as well
18.   Spider-Man 2099 Classic: We’re actually already doing these in real life, but I’d want them to include every version of Miguel too and brief appearances across other titles
19.   Ultimate Spider-Man Classic: Obviously the same deal for Ultimate Peter Parker, but I’d also include Ultimate Jessica Drew as well
20.   Web of Spider-Verse: A trade series that reprints in publication order every other AU Spider-People out there. All the What Ifs, the Earth X stuff, House of M, X-Men: Forever, 1602, Noir, India, Peni Parker, Fairy Tales and of course Web Warriors
21.   Spider-Girl Classic: We’re already doing this one too. Just wish it’d come out faster!
22.   Spider-Man: Japan Classic: ALL the Japanese Spider-Man stories. Every appearance of Supaidaman from Spider-Verse and beyond. Every appearance of Spider-Man J, Mangaverse Spider-Man, Spidey Fake Red and most controversially Spider-Man: The Manga (deffo gonna have to put a mature readers disclaimer on those ones.
