@aristarchos said: ‘Alright again, get in your stance’ pei ming instructed Ling Wen as he moved to follow and move into his own. It was surprising for him when Ling Wen had first asked him to teach her to fight, but it was one he didn’t hesitate to jump at the chance for.
He watches Ling Wen now, donning her male form and over seeing his stance, making sure he was holding it just as Pei Ming instructed. He was no stranger to lessons on combat, he did start out as a soldier and among his rise in ranks teaching soldiers to fight was one of the many skills he has learned serving in the army. He had no doubts he could train Ling Wen easily.
‘Perfect’ he said with a grin. ‘You do catch on quick’ he says, his attempt to distract before he charges straight for him. Pei Ming moves his arm swiftly, speed increasing the closer he got and he grins when he finds his punch stopped by a perfect block.
‘Better’ he praises, their faces mere inches apart, and he watches his friend closely, feeling the strength they were putting just to hold him back. ‘but you’re forgetting something’ in his attempt to block Pei Ming’s attack his footwork loosened, allowing Pei Ming the space he needed to knock Ling Wen down on his back and allow him to take control. ‘You need to remember to if you’re feet aren’t steady your entire block becomes meaningless, I’m beginning to think you like being pinned under me’ he instructs honestly but couldn’t help the tease. ‘Do you yield?’ // yells forgive me I am actually really bad at writing combat so I hope this makes sense but !! Djsjsj
Ling Wen does not complain when ordered back into stance again. Instead he simply does with the careful dedication she’s known for with everything else that she does. This had been asked for and practice would help.
There’s no confusion or delusion that she’d ever really hold a candle to any martial god ( certainly not through honorable fighting means , but she wouldn’t fight honorably if it came to such a scenario anyways ). But should something or someone else try , then it could be useful. And besides , the moment of shock if she held her ground at all could be everything. Naturally Pei Ming was her first choice. It was logical , he had experience. And she trusted him.
He allows for a ghost of a smile at the compliment. “ It’s a necessary skill. “ She’s far too used to multitasking with more complex things to be distracted ; that and she was a strategist at her core. She struggled in strength but in strategy ? Nearly untouchable without luck on her opponent’s side.
His arm flies up to block the punch headed straight for his face , and adrenaline courses through his veins. Seeing Pei Ming charge at you was not exactly a reassuring thing when you were the target. And Ling Wen had noticed the increased speed and strength. One slip up would definitely have left him hurting even with this male form donned like steel armor.
But never once did Ling Wen’s resolve or fire of determination flicker as he stood his ground , staring at Pei Ming. Praise was nice , rarely given despite how hard she worked. “ Forgetti- “ He never finishes his question because he almost immediately found himself on the ground , air pushed from his lungs at the impact. For a minute every muscle is tense like a bomb ready to explode before it all does slack , and Ling Wen drops his head to rest against the ground with a sigh.
“ Mm. I see. It takes more conscious effort than I thought. “ Ling Wen dislikes making mistakes , but he can own up to them. ( Mostly. But with easier grace in something like this , far far from her field. ) His own footsteps were not nearly as light or graceful as those of the martial gods. With the Brocade Immortal , he hadn’t had to think about it at all. Then again , it wouldn’t have mattered with how it had taken control at times. A sour thought in his mouth he pushes it aside to focus up at Pei Ming. Footwork , he needed to put more energy and thought there.
The question , however , only made the flames of determination intensify in Ling Wen’s gaze. He stared at Pei Ming’s face only a few inches from his own. “ No. “ He answers , steely determination. There’s a proper way out of this scenario even with the differences , she knows. It’s just a matter of finding it. ( Besides simply headbutting him in the face which they’re probably both aware she’s thought of but mercifully hasn’t done. ) “ And I want to do it again once I get out. “ He adds after.

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

Shit man, this wizard war is fucked. I just saw a guy clap his hands together and say "the ten hells" or some similar shit, and every one around him turned inside out, had their tibia explode and then disappeared. The camera didn't even go onto him, that's how common shit like this is. My ass is casting frostbite and level 2 poison. I think I just heard "power word:scrunch" two groups over. I gotta get the fuck outta here.
