The more I write of my OFMD speculative S3 fic, the more I realise how much the writers were constrained for writing S2, by budget and executive interference about content and the limited time given by 8 episodes with reduced duration caps - I hadn't realised how much shorter some of the S2 episodes were than S1.

It makes me spit tacks thinking how much they could have done with the full 10 episodes, how so much of the stuff that felt rushed or pruned down or even fully cut was because too many CEOs spoiling the broth and forcing them to speedrun (and censor) so much.

We know they had:

a reunion scene with Jim and Olu - Samba mentioned it in WJW. Roach bringing them the soup and Olu crying on Jim's shoulder.

scenes setting up Zheng and Olu in the Republic from the press stills so it wasn't just hacked and slashed down to "you're the break in my day"

Wee John had more scenes with a through-line through multiple episodes about being tired of just being the Big Guy/muscle.

the entire planned polycule during episode 6 that was fully vetoed to the point that the cast and writers had to resort to slipping in coded references ("we've shared before" / "he's my anchor")

episode 6 originally meant to be a wedding episode where Ed actually pays for Lucius and Pete's wedding which again, vetoed, and we were only given a 2 minute ceremony tacked on the end - the fact that "Calypso's birthday" is literally "something you just made up as an excuse for a party" because they had to rewrite the episode

Ed and Stede actually spending episode 6 with them both not dealing well with "going slow" but it also being vetoed because Heaven forfend showing positive sexual desire between gay characters. But sure, lets show them being tortured instead. Max likes that.

Related to this is the 24 sexathon. Originally, it was meant to be Jim/Olu/Archie but it was shifted over to Lucius and Pete. Look at S1 when we had naked Olu and Jim snuggled post-coitus and Lucius drawing dick-pics and flirting shamelessly, 'we don't belong to each other'.

By comparison, S2 was pared back to a handful of kisses, one fade to black and a 60-second wedding. Nothing says sterilising the queer sex experience like having two people standing two feet apart, fully-dressed and not touching while saying "Oh yeah we had so much sex" 😤 THEY COULD HAVE BEEN CUDDLING IN BED. WE DESERVED CUDDLES. THIS GOES FOR EVERYONE.

But no. You may only have [this] much open queer affection in this show and then we shall destroy it because we never wanted to give you S2 in the first place.

WIP Wednesday Thursday

Happy Thursday y'all! It's been a while since I gave an update on the Dancing with the Stars Dieter fic, Closed Position.

As mentioned before, I do not plan to fully dive into this fic and start posting until Destiny & Deliverance has been completed. However, there is only one chapter and the epilogue left (I'm not ready). Since, it's not that far off...I have started working on my outline for dancing Dieter. More below the cut. 👇

I have it planned out fairly well, so I am sharing my chapter list with you today. This could change slightly when I start digging in, but this is the format I'm going with:

I've been doing a ton of homework on the show, so I plan to incorporate a lot of crazy behind the scenes stuff that actually happens and makes for an entertaining plot. Anyone down for a weekly spray tan? No? Dieter isn't a fan either.

This fic will not be anywhere near as angsty as D & D. However, some tough topics are mentioned, mostly relating to Kat's (OFC) asshole ex who will be very present as another professional dancer on the show. Then of course, Dieter's issues with drugs and alcohol are discussed too. He will be sober in this fic, but early on in his journey. Still very much our loveable, hot mess trash panda though.

I would like to do a lot more extras with this fic. I plan to share some inspiration videos for each chapter so you will have a visual of the dances. I think it will help you understand what ultimately causes Dieter and Kat to fall for each other. If nothing else, the visuals are just hot AF.

There will be a lot of Latin dances, just because we have to show off Dieter's loose hips. You know there are going to be jokes about that. I feel like it's a good excuse to take Dieter's button allergy up a few notches too. 😏 Here is a sexy little Rumba video to get us started. This dance may or may not be the one that gets them in trouble...🤐

Series Summary: Dieter Bravo was looking to change his bad boy image and clean up his act after hitting rock bottom. His team hoped that having him join the nationally televised family friendly dance competition would be a good first step, if they can keep him out of trouble.

Katarina Stamos expected her last season as a professional dance partner to one of Hollywood’s biggest stars to go the same as it had for the past nine seasons. That all changed when she was partnered with the infamous Dieter Bravo.

Dieter and Katarina are reluctantly thrown into their partnership and must learn to work together to succeed in the competition. In the process they form a deeper connection beyond the dance floor that neither anticipated.

Samba posted the uncut version of the uniform disguise scene and ohhhh myyyyy goddddd. It's only about a minute, but it gives you so much characterization for the entire ensemble. And Ed's gigantic smile! Stede's wink! The boyfriends(!!) are so happy to be doing a fuckery together!

The more things I see from S2, the angrier I get at Max/Zaslav now that we're getting more glimpses of what had to be cut to do... whatever it was the studio wanted. After watching S1 and how carefully and skillfully it was put together, it's extremely obvious S2 had been chopped up to fit the allotted time. They did their best to keep it coherent and focused on the main story, but there are still bits (like when Olu and Auntie are talking about softness) where you can tell a bit of dialogue was a resolution to something previously introduced.

Even with a 40 percent budget reduction they were still making the best show they could. But the studio still wanted them to cut it down even more. How tf do we get the Jenkins cut of S2? I don't care if we just get a zip file of raw clips, we can figure out how to put it together.

Real 10 Dance 2022 Review!

The remote version of Real 10 Dance this year was streamed on 6/25 at 8pm JST and was available for playback for 72 hours. This was my first time attending the event, so you know I had to go back and take so many screenshots >:). Unfortunately most of them came out pretty blurry, but you can find much higher quality pictures from the Real 10 Dance twitter, Odori Biyori twitter, or Nishio Kouichi’s blogposts (first half | second half). (If you’d like to see, I also posted all of my pictures here on Imgur, some of which will be in this post.)

The stream is long gone now, but they sent a behind the scenes video for audience members who added tips to the staff, dancers, or Inoue. Here is the link (password: dancethanks) if you would like to see parts of their performances. I keep reliving the experience by rewatching this...

The first few sections were a lot of talking which I did not understand, but sailorspazz wrote up a very detailed report for that too :), please go read it for an accurate account of the event. As for me, I’ll skip right to the manga discussion and dance sequences under the cut lol.

Our panel of dance (and manga) experts come into frame and introduce themselves (left to right: Takashima Kiyomi, Motoike Jun, Shimoda Ai, Kajiya Takashi). I liked how Motoike-sensei hid his face behind the catalogue from the 2019 exhibition lol. He was my favorite part of the segment since he was sometimes just flipping through the pages while the others talked about something else haha.

The first section was the dancers picking out a dance scene they liked from the manga and discussed the characters’ postures as well as the atmosphere of the dances that were portrayed (ex. the waltz from chapter 4, the God of Dance in chapter 25 etc.). The second section was almost entirely them breaking down all the things that make Suzuki’s face great (and praising Inoue’s art in general lol). Motoike-sensei even went as far as recreating a Suzuki panel on the whiteboard, which I imagine was very hard to do. They had to clarify that he definitely doesn’t draw under the Inouesatoh pen name lol.

Then comes the main dances! I’ll include 2-3 photos of every number (incl. links to the music) and give short comments for each. (Again, there are way nicer pictures in the links mentioned above but I’m partly writing this for me to recollect my thoughts so bear with me :P)

Masquerade (Khachaturian) - Viennese Waltz (Shimoda Ai, Murano Miri, Seuchi Hideyuki, Masuda Daisuke, Sekine Choma, Takagi Takashi, Motoike Jun, and Nishio Kouichi)

I loved that we got to see a female dance pair!! The way their dresses spun was so pretty, and when the rest of the group joined in, it really felt like a masquerade dance. This piece was very important in the 10 Dance plot, I’m glad that I could see people dancing to it (nothing came up on Youtube when I searched for it lmao).

Butter (BTS) - Cha Cha Cha (Kajiya Takashi and Katsube Kou)

This is probably the first time I listened to Butter in full, and now it’s kind of stuck in my head... The dance was really upbeat, I especially liked the part where they kept spinning, they just kept going..! The pair looked liked they were having a lot of fun lol.

Calmi Cuori Appassionati - Rumba and Samba (Sekine Choma and Takagi Takashi)

This was one of my favorite dances! It told such a dramatic love story and I kept rewatching it (and the BTS version) over and over again. As sailorspazz already mentioned, the shorter dancer (Sekine Choma) got to lead during the dance as well which is a bit uncommon even in same-sex dancing, so that was really cool. I had to add this third hilarious photo in as well, it’s so good that I’ve made a meme using it lmao (more HQ pictures from this dance).

All That Jazz (“Chicago” musical) - Slow Jive (Kamiwaki Yukiko, Saiki Tomoko, Shizumu Ai, Numata Manami, Takashima Kiyomi, and Tsukada Mami)

Ladies’ number B)! I saw the pictures soon after the in-person event was held in April; I quote retweeted it with “Women 👀” and got a like from one of the dancers... That wasn’t relevant, but anyway, I loved watching this dance!

Romeo and Juliet (Nino Rota) - Waltz (Nishio Kouichi and Motoike Jun)

Uh oh, time to bawl my eyes out again... This was obviously going to be my favorite dance of the event; it’s got the drama, the angst, and them wearing tuxedoes just makes the Honor Dance headcanon that much more real, how could I not cry?! Both dancers are similar in body type, so I’m really looking forward to using these pictures as reference for a certain fandom day coming up in a few months 👀...

Up All Night (Charlie Puth) - Rumba (Seuchi Hideyuki and Masuda Daisuke)

This is another song they managed to get stuck in my head lol. It’s such a sweet rumba (compared to the angsty one before) and it really felt like the dance moves and expressions matched the lyrics! The hand hold at the end is adorable too...

It’s Time To Dance (“The Prom” musical)

Allow me to indulge in spamming pictures from this finale, there were simply too many cute moments! I’m pretty sure Nishio-sensei and Motoike-sensei have paired up in past events as well, and they got to strike three different poses in this dance (not including them fixing each other’s collars because AWW THAT’S SO CUTE WTF). All in all, this was a great experience for those who couldn’t attend in-person, I hope they keep doing it every year for us overseas fans as well!

2023 Year End List - #5

The Redshift Blues - Dispirited Spirits

Main genres: Art Rock, Progressive Rock, Midwest Emo

A decent sampling of: Space Rock, Post-Rock, Jazz Rock, Math Rock, Experimental Rock

Midwest Emo, and probably just Emo in general, really ain't usually my thing.

There's definitely some good and some great in nearly every scene, but I find this one in general to be saturated with overly indulgent projects that don't add up in the quality factor, and bands that just come off as harsh and grating. There's also a prominent few artists in this scene that give off the kind of Nice Guy™ energy that makes my skin crawl.

So if I'm completely being honest, I really just came across this record by chance, and decided to check it out almost purely because of the spectacularly awesome cover art and the equally awesome record title. To quote anime youtuber Hazel, that shit owns.

Dispirited Spirits is the moniker of Portuguese singer/songwriter/producer Indigo Dias, who was just 19 fricking years old when he made this record, and just typing that sentence out makes my head wanna explode. HOW??? HOOOOOOW???!?!?!?

What's even more, this is frigging fantastic by my own standards, and I'm not even someone who regularly enjoys a whole lot of Emo music. If there's any young newcomer who's gonna take the world of indie rock by storm, then it's gotta be this guy, right? If I was a betting man, I'd be putting my money on Dispirited Spirits.

Case in point, his latest project.

That is to say, The Redshift Blues is a stunning record that captures the awe and the angst of being that diminutive human being, bearing witness to the grandeur of the night sky which acts as the gateway to the unfathomably vast realm outside of our tiny little blue planet. Who needs expensive VR headsets to simulate floating freely through the endless sea of the cosmos, when you can just listen to this record, close your eyes, and get just about as close to the real deal as you're ever gonna have in your lifetime?

This album does a little bit of everything on the nerdier side of modern rock music - mostly a midwest emo/art rock/prog hybrid, with moments of post-rock, jazz-rock, and math rock all thrown in the mix. At the same time, this very much reinvents and kinda defies genre, clearly aiming to be its own singular thing.

Dias takes his lyrical inspiration from various astronomical phenomena on this record, the title itself being clever wordplay for the death of a relationship that invokes the universe's redshift or tendency towards expansion, causing objects to become more distant from each other over time. Some may find this dorky or try-hard or whatever, but I think the execution is mostly brilliant.

Anyhow, let's cut to the chase and hone in on my favourite tracks.

"Nine Clouds" swims through skies of glittering space dust, with gently gliding guitars that resonate in endless ripples through space and time. This track is impeccably cushiony; disorienting in the sense that it's as if I'm turning in random circles as the musical notes twist, soar, and plummet, but all the while I remain perfectly cradled in a bubble of warm nurturing light.

"Bring Down The Sky" is a journey through cosmological purgatory and back, with various trials of harsh emo power chords separated by periods of rest nestled between mellow psychedelic phaser pedals and flourishing harps. Also, kudos to whoever laid down the many different drum patterns on this track - really holds the whole thing together to give it some solid form and muscle.

"Methanol Fire" interpolates a samba-jazz beat into its hard-rocking midwest emo riffs, making it the grooviest and most rhythmic track on an otherwise sometimes very free-form record. Leisurely space jazz atmosphere interchanged with sad boys moshing in the nucleus of a supernova. These two major components blend together so seamlessly in a way I probably wouldn't have otherwise thought was possible.

The titular outro "The Redshift Blues" is hands down the real showstopper here, as well as the emotional lynchpin of the record. This ten minute opus is one part looming space ambience, one part post-rock epic poem, yet another part part solitary acoustic ballad, and one part cinematic orchestral elegy. The moment of that final line of the bridge where Dias utters "I'll find you in the stars" and everything comes forth in this really mind-blowing, unearthly harmonious sound swell - that moment just really gets to me. A simple instance of pure, raw, ephemeral beauty in the midst of a very chaotic composition.

There are a few sparring moments here or there where it meanders or overly indulges itself - mostly on "Saturnine Saturn Dreams" - But overall I'm mostly impressed at how much of this manages to come together in a way that comes off very natural. There's a lot of tight composition that's working over-time to make sure that this maintains its nearly amorphous structure.

So yeah, let me reiterate that I am mostly just mind-blown by this project. Dispirited Spirits is easily one of the most ambitious and unique artists in indie rock to have come onto the scene so far in this new-(ish) decade. The powerful cohesion of this project suggests that it came from an visionary who's far more seasoned than Indigo Dias would reasonably be at his young age.

The Redshift Blues brilliantly conveys the existential dread and angst that arises from existing in a world far larger than you could ever imagine, and how that impacts your ability to ever be fully in control of your life when there are so many external factors involved that are so much larger than you. Ultimately, it's a surrendering of the self to the inevitable impotence of being just one person, yet still the artist manages to find a shimmer of hope and humility in what is truly sublime about this world. That, I think, is the true Redshift Blues.

I’ve spilt a considerable amount of digital ink covering essentially everything the West Hill crew has committed to wax since the end of 2017 and it’s been fascinating to chronicle their continued growth as producers and songwriters, with the future freak funk psychedelics and fourth world boogie jams of The Mystic Jungle Tribe eventually blossoming into supremely romantic and timeless dancefloor fair…things like the sensual R&B of Modula’s “Argonauta,” the starry eyed synth pop of Whodamanny’s The Dance Sucker, the pitch perfect Afro-Italian grooves of Afrodesia, the ecstatic orchestrations and disco diva vocalizations of Masarima, and most recently, a truly stunning mini-LP of sunset mystery, sexual temptation, and lovelorn adventure under the name Rosa. And though the general trend has been towards increasingly classical journeys in Neapolitan disco, boogie kissed proto-house, and balearic pop, there have been some interesting detours along the way, with the collective flexing their trippier tastes via the wah wah echo slides and boom bap electro scuzz of Space Garage, Modula’s ceremonial doom epic “Descending the Abyss,” and the galactic groovescapes, experimental funk cruisers, and splatter jazz electronics of Whodamanny’s T.C.P. But perhaps most singular and far out of all was Milord’s Delta Waves Dimension, which used interstellar ambient, starscape kosmische, and sci-fi electro to guide the mind through mysterious landscapes within the world of dreams, resulting in an album of astral magic and inner space exploration unlike anything else out there. So as you can imagine, I was ecstatic to learn Milord was releasing new music in 2020 via Pinchy & Friends and now, having spent time with his M · E · T · A / M · U · S · I · C 12”, I am happy to report that the artist has constructed another imaginative, enigmatic, and deeply transportive sonic experience, though this time, the textures lean towards spiritual new age, oceanic etherfunk, psychotropic boogie, and cosmic library experimentation, with a vibe not so far from Pàscal’s deeply mystical Nero di Seppia 7”, as well as the more zoned out and gaseous cuts from The Mystic Jungle Tribe.

Milord - M · E · T · A / M · U · S · I · C (Pinchy & Friends, 2020) When I listen to “Transcendental Experience,” I imagine somehow traveling to the arcane video game environment pictured on the record sleeve and finding a hidden door behind the waterfall…a mysterious passage into the stone monolith leading to a spiritual soundbath of swirling galactic vapors and square wave leads that smear into a photonic haze. Liquified spheroids spin rapidly, gust of wind carry threads of shimmering space dust, and choral voices drone side to side until a calming kick beat enters the scene, which is eventually accented by snares, rimshots, claps, and tom tom pitter patter…a sort of understated rhythmic processional holding together orbiting formations of outer-dimensional gas while synthesized dolphin tracers dance through rainbow wormholes. “The Kemetist” follows, with a title hinting at resurrected Egyptian mythologies and a sonic world introduced by malfunctioning laser chatter and robotic bird laughter. A pulsating samba rhythm comes to life on rimshots, shakers, and kick drums and is soon livened by fat-bottomed tribal tom cascades and cracking snares that pitch-shift and phaser morph according to some psychotic dream logic. Hi-hats sketch out hypnotizing patterns as the melodic elements pull away, leaving distorted basslines that snap and growl with a sort futuristic post-punk energy while sparse chordscapes of melted glass drop the kind of wiggling anthemic hooks that could only come from the West Hill. Then, a panoramic conversation erupts across the stereo field, with brass-tinged mirage leads scatting on sunbeams in one ear and palm-muted spacefunk licks percolating in the other. All the while ethereal strings hover eternally and droning wisps of silver carress the spirit while Milord slowly peppers the background with deep space laser whooshes, percussive metals of alien origin, and wavefronts of aqueous static. It’s a world of swaggering future funk minimalism, including these ultra-confident bridges where the basslines break free from the rigid punk funk flow for snaking walks down the fretboard while psychoactive hazes and computronic noise bursts filter across the sky. There are even drops into pure electro-drum ritualism, with morphing snare panoramas, swinging laser drum cascades, and texture of percussive exotica approximating the screams of monkeys and the mating calls of birds of paradise.

The B-side opens in the dripping crystal caverns of “Infinite Balance,” wherein crumbled starlight falls over softened chords of volcanic glass. Angel choirs swim alongside laser light energy blasts as the beat drops, with kicks, snares, and toms firing like machine guns before settling into the groove. Massive bass synth pulsations move the body via pressurized wavefronts and as electrified clap cascades intermingle with flamboyant Latin prog tom rolls, panpipes calm the mind with their meditative paeans to the spirits of the sea. At some point, rocketing snare fills wash away the panpipes, which are replaced with squiggling West Hill-style leads…these searing solar energy scats of future fusion majesty that are trailed by malfunctioning machine gases, as if zany chord clusters and slip-sliding ascents are transmuting into the joyful songs of extra-terrestrial whales. During a section where the melodic elements recede, spaceage liquids drop over a shambolic percussion vibe out, with cowbells sparkling amidst towering tom tom flams, whipcrack snare and clap patterns, and burning currents of exo-planetary static. But eventually, the stoner funk basslines return to chug out their ambient dreamspells while glowing glass chordscapes support new age woodwind romantics. And by the end of the track, the mix reduces to asymmetrical kick drum echoes, blasting snares, and melted globules of twinkling light. Then in final track “Meta Music,” an introduction of cowbells, snare cracks, and flubbing tom patterns drops us into a sexual downtempo groover…a sort of boogie kissed chill-out strut into the depths of a paradise nightscape. Basslines throb nimbly as they saunter up and down, sometimes leaving huge chasms of silence between the sensual funk growls. Palm-muting guitars slide smoothly, fairy fantasy woodwinds intermingle with FM synth leads, and celestial orchestrations evoke rising cascades of starlight that disperse into a haze of dust. An extended passage of electro drumming sees shakers decaying like rattlesnake tails and silvery space leads floating alone in the void as the basslines continue their midnight funk walk, and as the strings and breathy pad layers return, the carry with them sparkling mermaid atmospherics that surround aquafunk guitar riffs, electrified idiophones made of seashell, and heatwave fusion leads that bend towards orgasm.

Hello sillies this is a monumental post for me. Remember before how I was like “Oh I don’t know any music. I can’t name anything I listen to.” You know... like an idiot. Well that’s not me anymore! Because of the internet and apps! Thank you internet and apps! So here is a list of albums and bands and songs that I listened to a lot last year.

*Disclaimer* yes you will notice this list is 95% Japanese musicians... and before any of you girlies try to roast me for that just KNOW I am prepared to whip out my Counterattack Card and let you know it’s actually an act of bravery against your Amerikkkan Western-centric capitalist hetero... homopho... homophone... homo sapi... um something musical hegemony so just TRY to rib me. While you were going on dates I was studying Maoist Third Worldism... also it’s the algorithms’ fault anyway for always recommending Japanese musicians to me so take it up with them!

This is all off the top of my head and in no definitive rankings and there’s no sense to the organization of this post. Links to albums or those “official” auto-generated playlists on Youtube when possible otherwise they’re usually on Spotify. And yes I will have to resort to checking wikipedia to describe genres :)

Serani Poji - Has a special place in my heart because I really like what they produced and their whole style of music, but also because I discovered them in the spring at the same time the S******** r**** season started, so I would listen to Serani on my shitty little Beats Pill knockoff Bluetooth speaker from Ross while driving back through West Seattle and over the viaduct after the games, and it was sooooo perfect. Days when the S******** would be winning easily and the tree pollen would drift down onto the field like snow in the late afternoon sun and I would lean against the temporary fence because I got the last overflow tickets right on the field, and then I would put on DEAR HEROES or Laughing Frog while I drove to the water to watch the sunset... oh shit let’s not get too deep into my gay feelings. Genre: ... pop? See I really am too dumb to say anything ever.
