It's rare that I get to use skills from my public administration degree, so I love when I can look at a thing and it's everything I would hope for.

Like so many other higher education institutions, the London School of Economics has investment in companies complicit in Israeli apartheid and Palestinian genocide. The students put together a 115 page meticulously researched report that picks apart the school's ESG policy, which governs how it invests its money. It identifies investments that go directly against the stated goals of the school, like minimizing the impact of climate change.

This is the sort of exemplar policy analysis writing I envision as the platonic ideal. It lays out the problem clearly, supports its assertions with research, and ends with a concrete list of actions to correct or mitigate the problem(s).

Ironically, getting my degree in public administration is the thing that made me decide it wasn't something I wanted to do. I suspected the things that make doing good governmental work difficult, but I didn't realize how clearly people knew they were interfering in the process.

So I'm glad to see students who take the skills the school taught them and absolutely fucking destroy it.

Instead of framing it as "male lonliness epidemic" we should focus on how one: being a "man" in white American culture in particular is a deeply isolating experience and two: being isolated is like the number 1 thing that leads people to joining cults or otherwise adopting pretty horrific ideologies

Like theres guys out there who need help but feel they can't ask for it because it will make them seem weak and that goes counter to their idea of what a Man should be. This hypothetical highly isolated guy who is suffering in silence finds the wrong message board at the right time, and then he gets lead down a really dark path. Almost entirely because of toxic (white) masculinity

Idk what the solution is, since obviously women don't owe it to men to be therapists and educators, but also these guys are often either unable (broke) or unwilling to see therapists. I'm just saying words on the internet.

Do you live in New York? Do you want to live in New York? Are you interested in working for the government? The NYS government is hiring folks for a whole host of positions throughout the state WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE AND PASS A CIVIL SERVICE EXAM through the HELPS program.

I know a lot of folks are graduating school, looking to shift careers, and/or looking to hop states to somewhere that aligns more with their needs and priorities. This may be something worth checking out if that's you. It's government which comes with all of its attendant quirks and challenges, but it's generally stable, has good health insurance, and if you stick it out is public service eligible for student loan forgiveness. And even if you don't it might be a safe landing spot for you while you figure out what your next steps are.
