Jimin’s bday WeLive v.2022

As I am listening in the first few minutes, I am having difficulty determining if the background sounds I am hearing are a door opening and closing and perhaps someone moving around in the room or is that his feet and shoes under the table? Like maybe it’s the shuffling sound of his shoes/feet? And he does look off to the side every now and then, sometimes just glancing at nothing? but also a few times actually looks as if his eyes focus on something specific...or not. Maybe not.

You know, I have seen the comments about hearing a certain someone whisper “Jjyaman” during a moment but me, being the skeptical asshole I am, just pooh-poohed that... y’all are reaching! don’t be like them! But now.... (listens very very carefully now). Hmmm.

Jimin putting up his own printed out birthday decor on the wall and he can’t seem to hang them correctly and me over here with my most basic of basic, like SCREAMING basic knowledge of Hangul can tell right away that he is hanging some of them upside down... Jimin, hun.... you are a born-and-educated-in-Korea, Korean... full bleed as we say here. It’s upside-down, babe.

Ok, Jimin sucks at handling tape. We know its not his first time too...

Finally he sees his mistakes and corrects the ones hanging upside-down... goodness. But now I am spurred on to get on with it on my Hangul lessons. FIGHTING! Anyway.

OMG him singing Happy Birthday in English, his pronunciation is immaculate. Him reading some of the comments in English! He understands that Army is majority international and I am grateful to him for making the effort to sharpen his English skills. I will do the same with Korean.

I can also hear traffic in the background... that room must be on the ground floor of the building or close to/facing Hangang-Daero (the main thoroughfare that the HYBE building is on). And it’s midnight there and that traffic still sounds like hell.

Jimin showing us his photo folio book and not wanting to spoil it for us... unintentionally artistic? Right.

Jimin asking if he’s too ugly after using those purple sunglasses to hold his hair out of the way... BAHAHAHAHAHAH.... if he only knew how much we all just swooned and fainted when he did that! At least I did. Bless his heart.

Ok, I got to the part where everyone swears it’s JK whispering “JJyaman” but I think it’s just Jimin saying “jyah” just like he did 17 seconds prior, only softer the second time. Yep, that’s me, crusher of delusions. Sorry.

I love how he’s so confident he can make this LEGO flower in no time and immediately can’t find the correct parts.... hahahahah... and his need to prove he can multitask... so cute of him. Relax, Jimin, it’s a LEGO kit, not a 4-minute high impact complex choreography in which you have to sing and hit the high notes on key. We know you got skillz. You don’t need to impress us with a LEGO kit.

Hahahaha! “You should read the instructions first” he says 30 minutes into it... that’s the left side speaking there... if you know, you know. Also, why does he have to pick the most difficult kits to be his first go at it? He’s such a nerd doing this. And I love him 2000% more for that. Then he realizes it took him 45 minutes to make that one flower hahahahahha!

Something I noticed...remember in the Las Vegas V Live when Jungkook came in at the end and the pillows fell off the back of the couch and Jimin explained to him they were trying to hide that nude picture on the wall and Jungkook looked up at it and went all smirky “oh... ho ho ho ho” ... Remember that? Jimin has done that exact thing twice in this video. Talk about picking up each other’s mannerisms... classic.

And I guess time will tell what exactly did he mean by this:

Ok, I genuinely think he was alone in the room. That flower balloon was slightly reflective and I did not see any strange unexplainable movements during the entire video. Or... who are you looking at Jimin?

But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t someone waiting outside the room and watching on the other side of the glass....

I am impressed Weverse got the subs up so quickly. Jimin must have been wearing his lawyer chelsea boots yesterday.

Ok, I am off for the evening to try to get some sleep and wake up in time for the concert. See you all on the other side.

numbers 4, 18, and 19 for Slow Dancing, please? I really love the series and was sad that it ended. Speaking of rereading fics, I've actually been going back to reread Slow Dancing back in the holidays. it's so beautiful and both JK and Joon were really charming in that story. I had a hard time choosing sides but was happy with the way you ended the story 🤧

4. What detail in Slow Dancing are you really proud of?

Ah, the details! For Slow Dancing, I do love a few that I included in the story. Let's start with this one:

When I was planning the story, I contemplated a little bit about the soulmate mark. With soulmate AUs, we've seen them written with specific themes to identify the soulmates (through colours, tattoos, etc), and I wanted to give these characters something specific that I could make as my own. I can't remember where I first saw the timer idea, but I figured it would be interesting to add another element to it to make it different, and the idea of the timer changing into flowers to identify the soulmates ended up shaping the entire story as a whole. I also love the details on the flowers itself, how the characters and pairing determine what kind of flowers you will get once the mark appears, as explained in this post. it was so fun doing all the research on these flowers and what they all represent (yeah, I didn't just make it all up. I actually browsed through tons of websites about flowers and their meanings lol) and then matching them with the characters and their personality traits.

Another detail that I'm really proud of is the idea of having Namjoon's timer stop running and remaining the same after years gone by. I don't want to spoil too much in case some people haven't read it yet, but the idea came to me after the fact that Namjoon and OC never truly met eye to eye. Adding this put a lot more meaning on their one-sided meeting, and added suspense during the scenes where Namjoon was being focused on.

18. If you wrote a sequel to Slow Dancing, what would it involve?

Hmmm, I'm not sure, but perhaps it would involve Jungkook and OC's life after everything that happened. We can see the aftermath, and maybe have them solve the mystery about their soulmate mark, or how the story about how their relationship unfolded would change the entire credence in the soulmate system that was formed in their universe. Yeah, now that I think about it, it does sound interesting if we could delve deeper into the theory haha

19. If you wrote a spin-off of Slow Dancing, what would it involve?

For a spin-off, I have two options that I could choose from. One, the story between Namjoon and Yeori. With Joon reuniting with Yeori, his life seemed to have gone a full circle, but I did leave things open for readers' interpretation of how his story would unfold. Two, the story between Tasha and BM/Matthew. It's interesting how Tasha grew to become readers' favourite leading towards the end of the story. I think people expected to see her as a love rival at first, though I've never planned her to be one. I'm glad that adding her part in the story pleased people and how everyone celebrated her journey to find her happy ending too. Even if she's a made up character, I figured some readers would like to know more about her side of the story (even if it's only to see more of Wooyoung and BM and perhaps even DEAN, as he made cameo too haha)

yoongi sQUAWKS at the shock that’s mere inches away from his face, having only woken up from his afternoon nap that ended up with him waking right before dinner

why were you all up in his face

“god, never do that to me again,” he grumbles at the abrupt awakening even if it’s his system that told him to, only a convenience that you happen to be there when he was starting to shift in his now-shallow slumber

“guess what!!!”

oh you’re squealinG??? alright that must be good

it’s nice to hear you excited anyways because you haven’t been for a long time ever since j*ngkook lol

“just show me,” yoongi sits up fully from his position on the couch, rubbing the remaining sleep off his eyes

normally, you would be pissed instantly because him not guessing just spoils your whole excitement

but tHIS time you don’t look bothered at the slightest, proceeding to take his faux disinterest in stride

the door clicks open and seokjin strides in like he owns the place, trying to immerse himself in the situation he’s walked on as fast as possible

you squeal in regard, eyes now switching between him and yoongi before you whip out something from behind your back

“i got a lunchbox!!!!”

you thrust the lunchbox (you recreated it in the way you receiver it) to yoongi’s face and he flinches momentarily, eyes focusing on the lunchbox first before his mind processes your words

“that is a really shiny scarf it’s — wait what??”

you,,, gOT A LUNCHBOX????

..... and it’s not from him??

yoongi looks at seokjin and the way he looks perplex but definitely sure confirms that it isn’t him either

“so someone — you received a lunchbox. huh.”

you nod earnestly, admiring the shiny scarf and the handiwork of an embroidery that’s your name on it

“yup! i was with taehyung when i noticed it on the corner of the room.”

oh god

seokjin scratches the back of his head and it’s a dead giveaway that yoongi notices, something sketchy definitely up in the air that shouldn’t be there

“yoongi! come here for a sec. i have a uh, question about weed :-)”

jin is nOT good when it comes to segues

he takes the liberty to pull aside a yoongi who has question marks knitted on his eyebrows, his gaze immediately trained on him once they’re far enough away from you

“long story but!!!!! that jungkook kid gave y/n the lunchbox. taehyung just happened to be there.”

you see

yoongi could only digest multiple things from a single sentence at once

but the problem is, he’s digesting EVERYTHING from jin’s sentence and he didn’t want to

he’s just gonna omit the parts he hates the most :D

“y/n. taehyung gave you that lunchbox. say thank you to him tomorrow morning.”

jin sputters because that is clearly not the truth he’s just said

and apparently, you seem to think so to because you just laughed at his cutthroat statement

“no he didn’t,” you heartily laugh, putting down the lunchbox before crossing your arms across his chest

he may not have understood the interaction he had with mr. kim hours ago, but after replaying it in his head for hours now (along with that part of you mistaking taehyung to be the giver), he fINALLY gets an idea

he rushes out of his room and right to the couch where jimin’s sprawled out and watching a movie

Vmin cut - BTS on Game Caterers - Main Game

It’s been a little while, hasn’t it? Feels nice to be writing a post again, but instead of a full breakdown of the episode of RUN x Game Caterer’s which was uploaded on their YouTube channel, I thought I’ll just talk about some of the cute vmin moments we got thanks it since there is quite a lot to get through. Sound good?

Before I get into it, can we just briefly talk about Tae’s look for these episodes because honestly...! I certainly did make a joke toward Admin 2 that Tae must’ve forgotten his shirt at home or something, but I’m fairly certain absolutely no one minded. At all. I’m not quite sure what was up with the hat he wore on and off, but it suits him very nicely.

Really, as vminnies we’ve just been spoiled recently, and especially in this episode on YouTube where the main part of it was spent on them trying to complete their tasks while also stopping the other members from succeeding with theirs. While we knew what tasks the hyungs had--Yoongi wasn’t allowed to speak, laugh or eat; Namjoon was supposed to place 300 dominos; Seokjin had to peel 100 quail eggs; Hoseok was to make a dish despite the members just having eaten--we initially didn’t know at all what the maknaes were supposed to do. But due to the nature of Tae’s task, it became clear rather quickly what it was, for us as viewers but also for the other members which led to hilarious and cute moments of them (and especially Jimin) trying to stop him.

The first little funny thing actually happens right as the members all go back into the house to start the game with Jimin singing the melody to IDOL, which Tae asks him about and then comments how it sounded familiar. Later in the episode it became clear why that melody in particular made Tae perk up.

I’m sorry Jiminie for the unflattering screenshot BUT the point is that Tae was walking around trying to find a good place to hide Seokjin’s quail eggs (not knowing which member they belong to) while the others watched him until Jimin decided to intervene and stop him. Tae wanted to hide them in a room that was off limits so Jimin wanted to take them from him (as proof that they really aren’t Tae’s task) but in the end Jimin and the others just got Tae to simply put them back where he got them from--the kitchen.

Just like he said to Hobi a little earlier, as the game begins Tae lies down ‘in the sun’ but immediately Jimin approaches him to stop him, in case that somehow really is his task. But quickly everyone turns their attention on Yoongi quietly sitting in the background looking like he might sleep while Hobi goes to the kitchen and asks the others if they are hungry making everyone immediately suspicious of him.

More below the cut:

Unsure how to inconspicuous get to his own task, Namjoon directs everyones attention back onto Tae lying on the floor with Jimin quickly joining him, Joon taking Tae’s hands while Jimin takes his ankles so they can move him across the room.

Similarly, a few scenes later we also have a moment where Seokjin and Namjoon try to get Tae off the floor or make him laugh (?) since Namjoon decides to tickle him. As someone who is a Kim line bias/bias wrecker, this was very lovely. Once Namjin leave, JK approaches Tae and asks him what he’s doing, to which Tae merely says he’s ‘just chillin’.

We also had two scenes in which Jimin helped Tae put his mic pack back on since it fell out once after he got up off the floor and then again after playing around with Jimin later in the episode. Honestly these two are like adorable magnets throughout this episode, it kind of reminds me a little of the RUN episode for Hangul Day I believe where they had to collect little plastic (?) hangul and make words out of them while also sticking stickers onto their target member where vmin decided to stick together (Jimin’s idea because, as he said himself, he loves Tae) but unbeknownst to Jimin, he was Tae’s target. Oops. Why it reminded me of that will become clear later in the episode.

As everyone was trying to make Seokjin’s hard task even harder, Tae and Jimin came by with a similar idea ending with Tae eating the two eggs Seokjin had so far peeled while Jimin laughs very amused. Cute!

Their next target was Yoongi, whom Tae previously dragged across the room by his ankles toward Seokjin. One thing I’d like to mention is how gentle and careful everyone was with Yoongi, and especially in this moment with how Jimin pointed out (even if it wasn’t subbed) that they should be careful with Yoongi’s left shoulder and as he lifted him, he didn’t put his hands/arm under Yoongi’s armpit, but instead Yoongi crossed his arms and Jimin grabbed his arm on his left side to avoid hurting him in any way. This pattern continued throughout the entire episode whenever the other members tried to “mess” with Yoongi to get him to fail his mission, like JK picking him up by the butt.

Eventually Dynamite starts playing and JK, Namjoon and Jimin see Tae start dancing and swiftly come in to stop him which kicks off an adorable chain of events when it comes to vmin with Jimin being very determined to stop Tae.

Can we talk about how delicately Tae is holding Jimin’s ankle? And also how slowly his socks are more and more dirty lol.

(Also, if you noticed in the gif, Tae did wear his ring in this episode, which according to RUN episode 140, was filmed a day after Let’s BTS aired so it truly appears as though Tae started to wear the ring after that show. Make of that what you will.)

During the reveal at the end of the episode we also got the moment when Jimin and Tae fall to the floor again from another angle which revealed to us that it looked like, while falling, Tae could’ve potentially hit his back on Jimin’s knee, which Jimin realized. To keep it from happening, Jimin put his hand on Tae’s back to soften his fall and keep him from hurting himself. Truly they care so much about each other and want to do whatever they can so the other doesn’t get hurt. Like that time on the Anpanman slide during the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself Tour where Jimin held on to Tae so that once they reached the bottom of the slide and fell off of it to the floor Tae wouldn’t hit the ground so hard and thus wouldn’t hurt himself.

And just as Tae managed to get off the floor again and it seems like Jimin will move on to mess with another member, Tae starts dancing again and Jimin swoops in again to stop him, both of them being all giggles and smiles just having so much fun. A little while later Namjoon also swoops in and stops Tae in a similar manner with Tae simply sinking to the floor to get Namjoon to stop and move on before trying again.

The episode continues and eventually Tae moves on to his actual task, which yes, was dancing, but not to Dynamite. Unfortunately for him, Jimin was still watching him and quickly caught on, realizing that the choreography he’s now trying isn’t Dynamite but instead we know it’s IDOL. So he stops him again.

Honestly Jimin rubbing his back against Tae like they’re in a club (or they’re back on stage during that one music show where Tae had that black vest and the pink bunny ears and those famous vmin ‘you come here often?’ pictures are from) is something I certainly did not expect. And of course Namjoon is there as well since what would be a moment of vmin wildin’ if Namjoon weren’t somewhere close by.

Eventually Jimin calls for Tae and JK and offers that they should put Yoongi outside. Meanwhile Tae attempts to continue dancing to IDOL to which Jimin tells him that they don’t have time for that and proposes a deal: if Tae helps him, Jimin will leave him alone. To which Tae just says that sure, perhaps he will let him dance, but JK will not, therefore rejecting the deal.

While Namjoon searches for his bag of dominos, we get this glimpse at vmin doing...something? Also while the camera continues to follow Namjoon, in the background we see Jimin continuously follow Tae and try to distract and stop him, the two of them giggling and smiling at each other for most of the time. Told you happy magnets.

Soon, continuing their team work against Yoongi, Jimin and Tae make another attempt together to get him to fail his mission with Namjoon joining in soon as well, along with JK, crowding in on Yoongi and tickling him, but it’s all in vein since Yoongi doesn’t break his quietness.

Eventually the 30 minutes are up and the game is over. Even if Tae managed to dance all the parts of the IDOL choreography, he did them in parts which did not count. Then the question is what Jimin’s mission was--put coins in the pockets of all the members. Here we have a cute scene where outside Jimin sits down and one of the coins falls from his pocket and Tae the kind soul bends down to pick it up to give it back to Jimin. Afterward we get a montage of Jimin’s attempts to fulfill his mission. I won’t reveal if he managed to do it or not since some of you might not have seen the episode yet. I also won’t reveal what JK’s task was nor who won in the end.

And with that, the episode was over. It was honestly so, so funny! If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend checking it out even though it’s cut into three parts making it a little more ‘tricky’ to find on YouTube than just clicking on the episodes on Weverse/vlive.

The Sorting Hat

Steve sighed, closing the book. He shouldn't be surprised, really, but it still seemed unfair. He needed to rant.

"You know," Steve started loudly, finding his boyfriend standing across the room from him, working on a holographic screen. "I never liked how JK Rowling wrote Slytherin."

"Uh, what?" Tony asked, dimly registering that Steve was addressing him, lost in the world of graphs and charts. At least that was how it looked to Steve, Tony was reading some data and clearly seeing something Steve didn't.

"It is the last book! And you are trying to tell me that everyone from Slytherin fled to hide instead of fighting against You Know Who. This seems like a cheap move. They can't be all bad," Steve grunted. He loved the series, he really did. But he also strongly believed in second chances. The story was lacking it for him. Bad people remained bad, good people remained good.

Tony paused his work and turned to Steve, the biggest grin spread over his face. "Are you seriously getting worked up over Harry Potter?"

Steve huffed. He wasn't in a mood to be taunted. It was a big deal for him.

"How far in the book are you? I am a bit rusty on my Harry Potter knowledge, but-" Tony sat next to Steve and took the book out of his hands. "Not all Slytherins are bad. See? Like Snape. He protected Harry all those years."

Steve shook his head. "Only because he was Lily's son. If Neville was chosen, he wouldn't give a rat's ass over him."

Tony chuckled, huffing his cheeks out to not let the laugh escape. Steve was seriously involved in the story. It was endearing. And Tony could humor him. Probably if he won't, Steve would just go to Sam and Bucky to vent, because, boy, those two were nerds. They even got married on the day school year in Hogwarts started and threw Harry Potter marathons every couple of months.

"Okay, how about Slughorn?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I see you reading this book again, and I am surprised you don't remember. Slughorn stayed and before the final encounter he fought Voldemort with other professors."

Steve just stared. That did happen, but-

"You just don't like Slughorn, because you are biased by his elitist treatment of students," Tony pointed out with a grin and Steve shrugged with an embarrassed smile. "See, this is why you fit in Gryffindor, you all are thickheaded and see the world in black and white-"

"That's not true!" Steve interrupted but was ignored and Tony went on.

"- unlike us, Slytherins, we adapt the situation to us and make the most of it-"

"You are not from Slytherin," Steve said in a serious voice, grabbing Tony by the wrist, eyes wide open as if he heard something awful.

"Oh?" Tony's lips twitched into a smile. "Are you ashamed of being married to a Slytherin, Gryffindork?"

Steve smiled back. "I guess you will be ashamed of being married to a Hufflepuff." In Steve's opinion, Hufflepuff house was severely underrated and he was proud to share some traits of Hufflepuff. Loyalty. Valuing hard work. Fair play. Patience wasn't his strong point, but hey, he couldn't be all perfect.

Tony tilted his head to the side, considering what he heard. "Oh yeah… You kinda fall into that category. You are like the epitome of Cedric Diggory."

"Does that make you mine Cho Chang?" Steve asked with a smile. He always thought of Tony as a mix of Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. Brave and determined and witty.

"Careful, you know how that love story ended," Tony warned in a playful tone.

Maybe it was enough reading for one day. Steve moved closer, pressing his thigh against Tony's, leaning in-

"Ah, one more question!"

Steve drew back, looking at his husband in a bit irritated manner. He really didn't have any patience for Tony spoiling their moments. "Yes?"

Tony's lips twitched into a smile. "Seeing that we discussed your book, I want to discuss mine now."

Steve huffed out a laugh. They could form a book club. "Okay."

"So… Are you a Jedi or a Sith?" Tony asked, smiling wider.

Oh, that was an easy one. "I am Han Solo!" Steve exclaimed, finally reaching his goal and lounging himself at Tony to pin him down under himself. "I listen only to myself. And you are my beautiful Princess Leia and I will protect you with my life."

Tony whined playfully, quite comfortably smothered with Steve's solid and warm weight. He really felt protected. "Why I am a girl again?"

"Because you have the right hips and ass to wear that gold bikini for me," Steve explained, tracing light fingers over the curve of Tony's hip and the gently narrowing waist.

Tony giggled, slapping at the intrusive hand. Seemed that it just encouraged Steve to be a bigger tease, and the light touch changed into quick squeezes of strong fingers, almost as if disciplining Tony.

"HA! Hahahaa! Steve, stop!"

"Only if you agree to wear a gold bikini."

"Nehehhever!"

also while we’re on the topic

his relationship with chris is honestly amazing

during other lives you can see him shushing other members so people can hear them talk

honest to god he’s a natural leader

he’s the youngest in his family, ok?

and then he’s suddenly the oldest when he’s in skidz and is basically the older brother figure

it had to be a hard adjustment

but damn he’s been doing an awesome job

Childhood Sweetheart Favourite book from childhood

Little Women by Louisa M Alcott. I guess, like so many women writers, I was motivated by Jo March’s determination to write, despite difficulties and opposition. I was quite sweet on Laurie and couldn’t believe he preferred Amy who I thought vain, superficial and spoiled. I still have my old Collins hardback, the sort with fragile thin paper; I love these books which make reading seem so special. Despite all the remakes, I still prefer the 1949 film – with Peter Lawford as Laurie, June Allyson as Jo and Elizabeth Taylor as Amy – I guess because it’s the one I watched as a child.

First love The first book you fell in love with

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. I still love the series and have all the audio books on my iPod. Actually the first book of the series which I read was Pigeon Post, a present from my parents, and of course after that I collected them all. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read them, always wanting to be a more imaginative John or less flaky Titty. I love their independence, their adventurous spirits, their bravery, their ability to make friends with whoever they meet.

Biggest book crush The book character you’re totally in love with

Adam Dalgliesh. Long before television detectives had to be emotionally challenged alcoholics or depressives, with more problems than their victims, PD James created this wonderful, sensible, poetry-writing, literature-quoting detective with a vulnerable side. One of the last gentleman detectives, Dalgliesh features in fourteen novels written over a period of 46 years. He seems unsurprisingly ageless, a mentor to his crime team, watching, observing, analysing. His inscrutability has a lot in common with Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot though Dalgliesh lacks the grand flourish, that would simply be too out-going for him.

Weirdest book crush Well… duh

Researching art and artists for Connectedness, I found myself drawn to Tracey Emin. I had enjoyed reading her weekly column in The Independent newspaper between 2005 and 2009, so was pleased to find these articles collected in My Life in a Column [Rizzoli]. Her anecdotal tales of her working week, her inspirations and frustrations, her victories and mistakes, gave me an insight into the practical world of a modern artist like no formally-written memoir did.

Hardest break up The book you didn’t want to end

It’s a series, rather than one book. I wish Elizabeth Jane Howard’s ‘Cazalet Chronicles’ would never end. What a master she is of unassuming quiet stories, making you care so much about the three generations of this wealthy family living through the Second World War. The lives of everyone are changed forever but particularly the women in the family; matriarch the Duchy; daughter Rachel and daughters-in-law Sybil, Villy and Zoe; and granddaughters Polly, Louise, Lydia and Clary.

The one that got away The book in your TBR or wish list that you regret not having started yet.

I could be predictable and say War and Peace, which is still on my bookshelf and on my Kindle. But instead I’m nominating Haruki Murakami’s IQ84. I’ve been a huge Murakami fan since first reading Norwegian Wood but the hardback edition of the trilogy is sitting on my to-read shelf. I’m not sure why I don’t pick it up: its length, perhaps [the trilogy is 1300 pages], or the reviews ranging from 1* to 5*.

Secret love Guilty Reading pleasure

Harry Potter. All of them. I listen to the amazing Stephen Fry read the audio books and tend to start with The Philosopher’s Stone and listen to them back-to-back. Why? JK Rowling has created a magical world that feels fingertips away from my own, which I could possibly join if I were Muggle-born. It has everything; good v evil, great fight scenes, wonderful characters to love and hate, and Rowling is so good at the detail and the planning. No fact is included in the early books that does not have relevance in the later books. Stay alert and spot them all!

Love one, love them all Favourite series or genre

Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy and now The Book of Dust. Ostensibly for children but which, like an iceberg, both disguise hidden depths of philosophy, thought and backstory enough to satisfy any adult reader. Pullman is excellent at plotting and character. We root for his people in a world not unlike ours, shaped slightly differently and running in parallel, so it is easy to imagine ourselves there. Like Rowling, Pullman is a master storyteller; many adult novelists would do well to read and study him.

Your latest squeeze Favourite read of the last 12 months

The best novel I’ve read in 2018 to date is The Heart’s Invisible Furies by Irish writer John Boyne. It is rare for me to give a book a 5* rating [my usual rating is 3] but I knew quite quickly when reading it that this would be a 5. Honest, sad, laugh-out-loud funny, touching, with paragraphs I just had to read out aloud to my husband. It is about being true to yourself, the need for honesty in relationships, and the power of love. It is the life story of one man, Cyril Avery, but also of a country and its attitudes to sexuality. The story starts in Goleen, Ireland, in 1945; a country riven by loyalty to, and hatred of, the British, at the same time in thrall to its Catholic priests whose rules were hypocritical, illogical and cruel. Cyril narrates his story, starting with how his 16-year old mother was denounced in church by the family priest for being single and pregnant.

Blind date for a friend If you were to set a friend up with a blind date (book) which one would it be?

The two novels I give most often to friends are The Light Years, the first of Elizabeth Jane Howard’s ‘Cazalet Chronicles’ and The Penguin Complete Novels of Nancy Mitford. Both are wonderful books to take you to another world, away from the stress of contemporary life and into the lives of a group of people who you come to care for.

Greatest love of all Favourite book of all time.

An impossible question to answer so I am going to nominate two [if that is allowed]. Both by Jane Austen. A predictable answer, I know, but I cannot lie and choose something else just because other people have chosen Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. I love the wit, the observation, the sumptuous descriptions. And then I remember Austen’s circumstances, moving from place to place, dependant on others, watching, writing quietly, and I wonder even more at her achievement. None of the Bronte experience of group supportive writing around a large table. Jane was on her own, without feedback.. Could you do it?
