OKAY OKAY SO!! do you have any book recs?? i want to get back into reading, it feels like i've mostly been focused on writing these days

i have a bunch but most are fantasy!

the folk of the air trilogy - holly black

enemies to friends-ish to enemies to lovers, mc is a badass and the li is so in love (hes also a menace but mc kinda covers that lmao)

this is a 3 book series with a new series that just dropped that happens after the events of these 3 books

the order is: the cruel prince, the wicked king, the queen of nothing, stolen heir (the new book) but there are also books you can read in between (that i havent read myself)

by far the best book series ive read, i would sell my soul to read it again for the first time

circe - madelline miller

this is a story about circe, a godess (i think) from greek myth. the writing was beautiful, but since its myth, if youre not interested i dont reccomend

(same goes w song of achilles by the same writer)

shadow and bone & six of crows - leigh bardugo

(this one has a two season series on netflix too if youre interested)

shadow and bone - 3 books;

mc is so op honestly, she discovers magical powers early in the book and finds out shes grisha (ppl that have magical powers), but not just any grisha, shes a legend grisha, one of a kind

i dont really remember who she ends up with as its been a while since i read the books but one li is an ass while the other gives golden retriever vibes and i didnt like either of them /lh

six of crows - 2 books;

now listen, i didnt actually read these two books but in the tv show the two series are shown at the same time and i like the characters in this one more

badass gang, thats it. (look more info pls dont trust me)

the kane chronicles - rick riordan

percy jackson is so famous people forget this absolute gem right here.

the idea is the same as percy jackson, except this time its about egyptian gods instead (also techically mc isnt a child of the gods)

it has 3 books, with extra crossover books w pjo (that are also really good once you have the basics)

the midnight library - matt haig

i'm actually not sure what category this falls into.

mc has an accident and ends up at a library at exactly midnight, where the weird librarian tells her that this library is her life (of sorts). basically each book in the library is how her life couldve been like based on some decisions she made

and she keeps going to these other versions of her life by reading the books until she realizes hey, she wants to live, and goes back to her original life

not my favorite, but still an okay one

dune - frank herbert

this is a classic, but it was really good

i dont remember the details, all i really remember was that i had sth for the mc

fr tho its really good, give it a go if long books dont intimidate you

as for books to get into reading again, hmmm

cries okay so dont get mad but the cruel prince got me out of a reading slump

momo - michael ende

this book is so well written istg

mc is a child, first of all. and i dont mean like a teen i mean shes 8 max, shes a literal child but its okay bc there isnt that much action in this one

the main idea of the book is about how precious time is, but its told through such an interesting way. there are time thieves that steal other people's time to live, making it look like theyre helping people save time on mundane things, and momo stops them (not in an insane way i promise)

the secret garden - frances hodgson burnett

this is a classic, but dont let that fool you this is a really well written book

this one has almost no action in it btw

mc is also a child here (shes maybe 12 at most), she moves into the mansion of her uncle after her family dies where she starts to behave like an actual child instead of some spoiled princess/lh

so one day while going on a stroll in the garden area (?) bc no one is there to take care of her now, she finds a secret garden and decides hey since no one seems to care for this garden, this is mine now

also there are other children that she befriends along the way that help her w the garden

ohh my god ok so most of these are literally books i have in my house right now - literally in the same room as me actually, and some of them ive had for aaages but just havent got to yet lmao

1 - london and the culture of homosexuality 1985-1914 by matt cook. ive started this one and its very good, it moves through different spheres of queer life in london during the time period and looks at them each in turn. really good stuff, im not very far in but i want to finish it so badly.

2 - queer london: perils and pleasures in the sexual metropolis, 1918-1957 by matt houlbrook. look i know what i like and its british queer history of a certain era lol i wish there was more stuff out there about not-london in this late 19th, early 20th century period but if there is, i havent come across it yet. ive like matt houlbrook's work before, its usually good scholarship and decently easy to read (for an academic text)

3 - the book of trespass by nick hayes. another non-fiction! this one ive had out of the library for a month and havent read more than two chapters lmao its about the development of ideas of land ownership and trespassing, and mixes a kind of urgent anger at the feeling that we do actually deserve to walk on the earth where we live with a joyfulness at the author's own trespassing adventures.

4 - nona the ninth by tamsyn muir. i know everyone and their nans has already read this, but my mother in law has got me gideon and then harrow for the past couple of christmases and i think shes getting me nona this year so ive been waiting! cant wait to read it and have no idea wtf is going on. genuinely mad that this series gets recced as "lesbian necromancers in space" when it is so so so much richer and more interesting than that!

5 - war and peace! i signed up for the emails. im signed up for moby dick too but im less excited about that bc ive already read a good amount of it, but ive never picked up war and peace and probably wouldnt if it werent for the trend of classic lit in your inbox.

answering this made me realize that i dont remember much about actual wc lore. ive been so focused on my own stories n characters that i was like oh yeah. warrior cats isnt my own made up creation and it already has canon established charcaters and stories . yeah <3 PLUS ALSO IT MADE ME REalize i barely know anything about the series from thr 5th series onward. like i know and have read every book from series 1-3, read 4/6 books i the 4th series, and i havent read the 5th, 6th, or 7th series. BUT i did read the first book in the 8th series annnnnd i liked it a lot so :) but yeah i dont really know much about series 5-7 but from what ive heard and seen n from what ive seen in videos the 5th series is good, the 6th series is okay and the first half of the 7th series is fine but it gets worse after book 3 KJSDKJBLKJG

1. What originally drew me to it

well. i was at the library in like 4th grade (maybe 3rd i genuinely dont remember) and i saw the cover for fire and ice (the 2nd book in the 1st series) and i waslike omg thasa kitty !!!!!!! and i read it and i aws like "WAW I NEED TO READ MORE I LOVE THESE FUCKED UP CATS HHOOOHGH WHATS GONNA HAPPEN TO GRAYSTRIPE AND FIREHEART HOUOUHG???!??!" n then i went back read the first book and after that i just. yeah <333

8. The character with the greatest wasted/unexplored potential

like. every single background character in thunderclan. because think about it so many of them could be interesting and have interesting stories and potential to do stuff but sooooo many cats are juts. wasted potential. i think hollytuft, one of lionblaze's and cinderheart's kits, could have had so much potential. SHE could've gotten flamepaw's arc of not living up to everyones expectations. hollytuft is named after lionblaze's dead sister hollyleaf and i feel like flamepaw's whole arc of being liek "ugh ive never even MET firestar and hes this IMPORTANT LEADER GUY and he's my GREAT GRANDFATHER and i look NOTHING LIKE HIM!!!!" could have and should have been given to hollytuft. hollytuft never met hollyleaf but with hollytuft her design looks exactly like hollyleaf, black fur n green eyes. something could have been done with that, with her being liek "ohhh im nervous because my dad wants me to live up to my aunt hollyleaf's name but ouhghg i feel like im not good neough because im juts a nobody im not special like she was !!!" and aughudgbhj. even her siblings fernsong and sorrelstripe could have had a similar arc to hers as they're both named after other cats, ferncloud and sorreltail who are also both deceased. but noOOOOo they gave what could have been an interesting story to Firestar Clone #4 and not her </333

14. The character/story arc I find the most compelling

i really really really like frostpaw's arc so far. idk if that rly counts bc arc 8 isnt finished yet and book 2 isnt even OUT yet so all we have to go off of is what was shown in book 1 but so far im just IN LOVE with her. poor thing was like "im gonna be a medicine cat apprentice!!!!!" and suddenly had to deal with her leader dying, their deputy being mysteriously murdered, and then her own mother bein mauled to death in front of her by DOGS. on top of that her mentor, her mediicne cat mentor, DOESNT BELIEVE IN STARCLAN and thats like a HUGE THING because a med cat is , yknow, supposed to be connected To Starclan n is supposed to get prophecies n stuff from them but mothwing, frostpaw's mentor, doesnt. believe in starclan. so its just. yeah! its very very interesting so far

16. A scene/moment that makes me really emotional every single time

there's. i think these few extra chapters in one of the books that comes after squirrelflight's hope, where leafpool dies. and its these few like bonus chapters about jayfeather (leafpool's son) and his own grief and him trying so hard to deny that he's grieving and then being visited by leafpool from starclan and just LOSING IT and its so ?? heart wrenching??? and afterwards he's like "actually no. it is okay 2 grieve . i am going to be okay" AND IM JUTS LIKE AWAHHAHAAAHAAAA <:( <:( <:(

18. A plot hole that makes me want to tear my hair out

theres so many. thers so many plot holes and inconsistencies in warrior cats that id be here all night if i had to name them all . but i suppose ill give a list of the ones i hate very very very VERY much :

i feel like every single Thing about starclan/the dark forest is just. a plot hole. in the prophecies begin and i think the new prophecy the dark forest is supposed to be a place where every Evil Cat goes and spends the rest of their life in solitude and they dont speak to any other dark forest resident. they can still talk to living cats through dreams but thats about it. but then fuckin idk in the 4th series theyre like "uhhh yeah hawkfrost tigerstar and brokenstar and every other dark forest warrior are able to communicate with each other which shouldnt be. like. possible! but oh well <3 same with starclan bc its like sometimes they can do certain things and then in other books theyre like "umm actually we cant do that" so its like . H

every single parent/kit plot hole/inconsistency. theres so many cats who we dont know the fathers/mothers of (though its more often than not the fathers who are unknown) and that on its own is to be expected, esp in super editions or in the early series. we to this day still have no idea who sandstorm's parents are. we don't know who ashfur/ferncloud's father is. we dont know who cloudtail's father is. we dont know a lot of things! but something that bothers me is when the warrior cats family tree tries to say that this cat is so-and-so's father especially when said cat is absolutely not the kit's father. like with whitestorm and brindleface, whitestorm is said to be brindleface's mate and therefore ferncloud and ashfur's mate. but whitestorm was already mates with willowpelt at the same time as he was supposedly mates with brindle, and whitestorm is absolutely not the type of person to have a mate, have kits with said mate, and then instantly move on to another cat while his kits are still in the nursery. whitestorm is loyal and by all means a good father to his Actual kits, sorrelkit rainkit and sootkit. and then the wc family tree also suggested that redtail and brindleface (yes, the same brindleface who's suppsoedly also mates with whitestorm) are the parents of sandstorm despte sandstorm during the 1st series not participating in either of their funerals. plus if you make sandstorm brindleface's daughter you make ashfur her brother and you make squirrelflight' sandstorm's daughter, ashfur's niece. and thats REAL bad when the whole ashfur having a thing for squirrelflight happens. yikes!

thats really it those are all the things i can think of. ik its only 2 things but . oh well DBJHBJKG

Distractions and O.W.L.S ✧ Draco x Reader

Summary: You start neglecting yourself and Draco when you begin stressing for O.W.L.S. The studying finally took its toll on you that landed you in the hospital wing but Draco helps you end the night on a good note.

Warnings and Perks: being stressed, over studying, fainting ! and corniness

Words: 2K (sorry for any mistakes its 3 AM !!!!!)

A/N: omg i am currently working on some requests and on Healing Heart 4, but i’ve had this scenario stuck in my head all night bc i was listening to a slowed down version of stuff we did from UP and so i thought id share it with everyone since i havent posted in like 2 days <3 do not own gif but pretend that you and Dracoooo <3

It was the beginning of June, weeks away from O.W.L.S, which meant weeks away from another ending of a school year at Hogwarts. What bothered you the most wasn’t the fact that you had homework piled up to the ceilings, or that Snape has been snapping at you all week and took away 5 house points from you, or that you were drowning in a sea of textbooks and notes that you kept studying for your upcoming exams; it was the fact that you had barely seen Draco in nearly two weeks. You were so busy with schoolwork and focused on getting outstanding marks, you hadn’t even realized you were neglecting your own boyfriend.

Of course, the two of you would find each other in the Great Hall during breakfast and you’d give him a quick hello and goodbye kiss faster than he could even register what was happening and by the time he did, you were already out the door and rushing towards your first class. At this point, you were acting like the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, always frantic and in a rush. Your hair was wild and untamed, you had dark bags under your eyes from the all-nighters you were pulling, your robes and clothes underneath were in disarray and wrinkled.

To make it worse, you never let Draco study with you. He constantly asked and you always gave him the same answer.

“If I study with you, I’ll never get anything done.”

Which was true. He was very distracting with his quiet jokes in the library, or when he would look up at you with his sparkling gray eyes when you would try to ask him a question that just flew from your mind at the sight, or smile at you with a wide toothy grin that lit up the room when you got sidetracked and talked to him, or the way he rested his hand on your thigh when he would sit beside you while you quietly read or wrote but the only thing you could focus on was his fiery touch. Really, it wasn’t him who would distract you; it was you who distracted yourself with him. And that was evident when you tried to remember everything you’ve learned in the past school term and came up blank because for some reason your brain only retained information and memories that contained Draco throughout the past year.

So you figured a little time away from him wouldn’t hurt. Because if you didn’t pass these O.W.L.S, you felt like everyone would be disappointed in you, especially yourself. So you locked yourself away in your dorm and crammed and jam-packed your brain with information until you eventually passed out hunched over a book with drool blurring the ink on your pages. You avoided the library for studying, knowing Draco would go looking for you or Madam Pince would distract you halfway through your note taking to kick you out for the night.

Mornings always came the same, you waking up randomly over your desk a few minutes before breakfast and changing into a new pair of robes as quickly as you could while trying your best to smooth your hair down with your hands. This morning was different, however. You woke up to one of your roommates shaking you violently while she spoke your name loudly above you, but it sounded distant. You shot up in a hot flash, wiping your mouth of any saliva and groaning when you started to feel the pounding in your head that seemed to shake up your whole brain. “Thank Merlin, you’re awake!” Your roommate exclaimed in relief. “You looked dead, honestly. But class is starting in twenty and you’ve missed breakfast.”

“Twenty?” you frown, letting your swelling head fall into your hands. “I don’t want to deal with Snape right now, I feel awful.”

“I’m going to try to say this as nice as possible,” she sighs, placing a hand on your shoulder, “but it shows.”

“Thanks,” you scowl. You try to get up from your chair but gasp in pain as your muscles cramp at the movement like a rickety old man.

“Maybe you should go to Madam Pomfrey,” she suggests, trying to help you up but you shoo her.

“No, I’m fine,” you rush to interject. “I will not be missing Potions, no.”

She gave you a shrug, backing away in defeat as she let you rush to change into new robes and attempt to brush down the matted mess that’s supposed to be your hair but gave up halfway through and threw it into an updo. The headache was not a good combination with the scalp pain from combing out knots. Your roommate waited for you with pitied eyes, following closely behind you as you hurried out of the room and towards the exit.

You sped walked out with her but didn’t see the mop of platinum blond that was waiting for you outside the entrance of the common room. You had zero awareness of his presence until his hand had reached out to hold onto your wrist, stopping your near sprint towards the class. Your roommate stopped too, eyeing the two of you and the look on the Slytherin’s face before she continued walking.

“What? Draco, let go,” you move away from him and he quickly drops your arm. “I’m going to be late.”

You began to walk away from him, but he stepped in front of you, stopping you again.

“Why weren’t you at breakfast?”

“I overslept,” you answered gruffly. “Now, move! If I’m late, Snape will have my head on a stick.”

“Y/N, you need to slow down,” he frowns, “all this studying and rushing around everywhere is going to land you in the hospital wing. You look sick already, I’m worried.”

“I’m not sick!” You huff, throwing your head back in irritation. “If you really cared about me, you’d let me go to class instead of insulting me.”

“I’m not insulting you. Am I so terrible to tell you that you look like you’re about to pass out any second?”

“Yes, you are terrible,” you sneer, the pounding in your head was getting stronger each passing second. “Instead of-”

Your train of thought was violently stopped in its angry tracks, you stumble back and begin blinking hard at the spots that quickly started to dot your vision. Your hand instinctively reached out towards Draco, which he grabbed and hurriedly darted forward towards you, gripping onto you before you could meet the ground, your vision going black and your consciousness out the door.

Draco felt himself begin to panic. He promptly began to feel guilty, feeling like it was his fault that you even fainted in the first place because of the argument he had accidentally started.

He gathered you up in his arms, one arm sliding under your knees and the other under your neck as he swiftly picked you up and began his frantic journey towards the hospital wing.

When he got you to Madam Pomfrey, she instructed him to set you down on one of the beds and kicked him out of the room while she started her treatment. His heart was beating so fast, he wanted nothing more than to stay by your side so he halfheartedly threatened her with his father and she ended up letting him stay with a deep sigh while he stood idly by your bed. When Madam Pomfrey was done, she left the two of you alone. Draco wasted no time in sitting at the foot of your bed, his hand finding its way into your cold one that laid limply beside you. He watched your sleeping figure with a relief as he noticed that whatever Pomfrey gave you had speedily began to affect you. Your skin no longer looked ghastly and dull, but healthy again and tinged with pink. The dark circles underneath your eyes had faded just a little bit, leaving only slight bags as you finally slept.

He waited maybe 12 hours for you to wake up. After missing his first class, he had decided to go to the rest of his classes as Madam Pomfrey swore to him up and down that you would not wake up any earlier. He begrudgingly obliged and skipped all his meals instead to spend his short free time with you. When his final class ended, he almost ran back to the hospital wing. He occupied the rest of his time with a book he had found thrown somewhere around the room. The book was long forgotten the second he felt your hand twitch and your body begin to stir, your tired e/c’s looking around the room in confusion before landing on him. He scooted himself closer to you, brushing a loose strand of hair out of your face as he looked at you with pure concern. It was the same look he had when he confronted you earlier and with that one look, you were able to recall everything that had happened before your collapse.

“I’m sorry I said you’re terrible,” you croak out sadly, your hand wrapping around his wrist and squeezing it gently.

“I’m sorry I made you faint,” he says. “How are you feeling?”

“That was my own fault,” you chortle, “but I feel really good. I know I fainted and all, but I feel much better with whatever Madam Pomfrey gave me.”

“I can tell,” he smiles, moving himself a little back as you sat up with a newfound strength. “She said you can leave when you wake up.”

“Good, now help me out of this bed.”

Draco took your hand and you hopped out of bed excitedly, turning towards him and giving him a tight hug that he returned twice as hard.

“If you’re not too tired, can I show you something?” He asks from above you, his arms still wrapped strongly around you.

“Yes, please,” you answer with a nod against his chest.

Draco steps away from you before taking your hand and walking the two of you out of the hospital wing and towards the stairs that led to the astronomy tower. When you reached the top, huffing, and puffing, he asked you again if you were okay to which you answered with an eager nod.

"Tonight is a blood moon,” he smiles, pointing up towards the very large orange and reddish moon in the starry night sky. It shone brightly but still gave off little light in its wake, the astronomy tower was almost dark, but you still managed to see the blond perfectly, he was watching you with a happy and loving glint in his eyes that you were able to notice. “I was planning on asking you to see it with me tonight, but we kind of ended up elsewhere.”

You threw yourself into his arms, your face buried deep in his robes and the heat radiating off his chest warmed you up in the comfiest way.

“You’re the best, Dray,” you mumble into the cloth of his robes, the clothing vibrating underneath you as he chuckled. You pulled away and gazed up at him, smiling when he placed a kiss on your forehead.

The two of you unknowingly began to sway back in forth in each other’s arms, his hands resting on your lower back while yours were looped loosely around the back of his neck.

“You scared me today,” he begins quietly, “and every day since you’ve started your studying.”

“I know,” you frown, “I’m sorry.”

“Promise me you’ll stop overworking yourself,” he says softly. “I know you’re scared you’ll fail, but I promise you won’t. You’re one of the smartest people I know and I know you’ll get outstanding marks on everything.”

“You think so?” you ask hopefully, your eyes trained on the burnt orange moon as you took in his words.

“I know so.”

A few more minutes of silence pass by, your head now leaning against his chest as the two of you still danced silently. And as if he read your mind, Draco began humming a soft and off-pitch rendition of Claire de Lune. You would laugh every time he forgot a note and would go silent for a moment before backtracking and humming it correctly.

You don’t know how long the two of you stayed up there dancing slowly in each other’s arms with Draco trying his best to hum the top classics of the classical’s, his lips finding yours every now and then to kiss you longingly and tenderly, but one thing was for sure; it was bliss.

Maybe distracting yourself with Draco wasn’t such a bad thing.

book you’ve reread the most times?

i dont actually know bc i dont keep track of this but i will say ive read fangirl by rainbow rowell SEVERAL times despite it not being like, groundbreaking in any particular way or like the kind of book i would recommend to a person. its just that for some reason it reliably snaps me out of a reading slump every fucking time

do you ever mark/dog ear books you own?

recently (january) purchased a little thing of post it tabs to mark parts in books i like and did the latter sixth of harrow the ninth like that, and then resolved to do that in all the books i own when i read them, and then i havent read a single book i own since. its all been library books. so, i could.

recommend and review a book.

hmmmm ill say all systems red by martha wells, which is the first in the murderbot series. im not actually much of a sci fi reader but i found this very accessible. murderbot has a great fucking personality and i actually recommend the audiobooks if you happen to have access to libby or something. its about this droid-ish thing who hacks its own governor module and gains free will, and its actually the most relatable book about personal identity that ive ever read. also quite short, i think the audiobook was something like four hours

OH NO DONT ENABLE ME... i dont have much content drawing-wise that i havent already posted of my ocs and i have a few different worlds (technically two of them are the same world just at very different points in time) with scattered lore that stays in my head but. im going to talk abt soap and its pals and the world she lives in bc ive been thinking abt them today hohohee

> basically in soap's world it's split between the mortal world and the spirit world, but they're both connected. the people in the mortal world are fish people (in all other ways they are like humans theyre just also cute anthropomorphic fish) and the people in the spirit world are various weird creatures, and the spirit world is much more wild and colorful. most of the spirits are less silly than soap but they all have dumb names just like soap.

> soap is a moon spirit and is supposed to take care of the moon. it didn't sign up for that job though since whoever becomes the sun and moon spirits is decided by vibes, and they have to spend most of their early life training and studying before taking their mentor's place

>their coworker is the sun spirit who is currently unnamed but i plan for her name to be very silly and dumb as well, whatever it ends up being. it's very serious and works very hard and soap is his foil basically bc it does everything way better and seems to enjoy its job. she kind of acts like a disappointed older sibling to soap and has pet hounds that are like solar flares that he often uses to hunt down soap and bring them back to their responsibilities

>soap is VERY irresponsible, never read the law book (sun spirit coworker has the law book memorized by heart), got her smart owl friend to help her cheat on all its studies while in training, they hate their work uniform (long flowy dress thing) and prefer to wear their silly little outfits and run around town being a source of trouble for everyone

>spiriting away unsuspecting children with the excuse of needing help with grand prophecies was made illegal in the spirit world more than 100 years ago because isekai protagonists always end up traumatized one way or another and it's kind of shitty to make mortal children fix your problems for you. soap does not know this because she does not pay attention also she does not care

>soap's aforementioned owl friend was her pal when it was still in training, was super shy when they were young and had a huge unrequited crush on them (that's why they helped them cheat on everything) but after soap became the official moon spirit they kind of drifted apart. owl friend has been trying to get over their crush for years now LOL, they have their own nice little library, they're a bit closed off and grumpy now though and don't like to think about the past because they're trying to get over it. also they have four arms

>soap has little star assistants. i havent thought abt them very much but in my mind they are very cute. soap does not like them bc they are tied to its role as moon spirit

i think the post saying that you shouldnt read pdf copies of maus online and that if you cant afford maus and its not available at your library then you should suck it up bc youre not entitled to read maus is like... iont know man kinda missing the point of "maus is being banned in schools/libraries and children are losing access to this vital education resource"

maus has been in print for decades. most ppl who buy it are going to buy it secondhand. the author is doing perfectly fine financially and doesnt make the majority of his money from maus sales, and even then its currently a best seller and sold out p much everywhere.

idk like,,, the ppl most impacted by maus being banned cant buy it for themselves and also literally cant get it from the library bc of the whole being banned thing. its not a video game or superhero comic where ppl read it for entertainment. its a vital educational resource detailing his fathers experiences of surviving the holocaust which is crucial during a time of increasing holocaust denial and the erasure of jewish history.

idk the whole thing just feels kinda tone deaf and also privileged in terms of access to well stocked libraries or financial ability. saying that you need to "compensate the author for his generational trauma" feels? kinda gross?? and plays back into the mindset going on right now of liberals being like "maus may have been banned but we made it a bestseller! america wins!" when that does little to address the severe harm being done in these school districts

im also like djdjdjd when i read maus in school i didnt even read it from the book. my english teacher printed out copies of it for students who couldnt buy it themselves. do you know how hard it is to be a teen in poverty and trying to access literature when the library is not an option for you?

like for real, what you gonna say to a teen in tennessee who wants to read maus but cant? that theyre not entitled to it and should just hold off until theyre 18 and can afford to buy it themselves?

the point isnt to turn this into an issue solved by the individual where the focus is to pay the author (who again is doing FINE financially. not all comic artists are but he is and makes his money from things like artist panels and college appearances not book sales) the focus should be on the way that students are being denied critical access to stories about the holocaust and how to combat that. like djdjdj most ppl was gonna buy it secondhand anyways? if someones poor or without access to these resources then like sure read the pdf copy online im p sure the author is more concerned about access to education than whether six dollars gets sent to thriftbooks and would rather the 16 yo kid read maus online than just not bc they think they havent earned the right to

So, what was your inspiration for House of the Rising Sun? (I feel like you've told us before, but PLEASE go off and get deep with it!) Like why'd you chose the mafia setting/AU? What made you decide that Evra would be a bartender and The Cirque would be a bar? Just ALL that, I love knowing those deep details that don't always transfer from the mind to the page~!

WARNING GUYS: YOU MIGHT WANNA READ THIS LATER IF YOU HAVENT READ TO AT LEAST ABOUT CHAPTER 10 OR 11 I BELIEVE

Oh boy, I love this question. Thank you Nom, I always love an excuse to ramble. So there's a few set of factors that led to House of the Rising Sun, and I think one of the first would be my bizarre obsession with The Godfather in middle school. (Side note: Who the hell put that book in a MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY???) This developed into a fascination with mafia history, no doubt fueled by my friendship with @evil-dad-evil (Thanks Lucien lmao), and one strange story about Jon Gotti from my dad, but thats a text post all its own. Regardless I just always thought it was neat is the basics.

The mafia au for Cirque du Freak just seemed like it would work well with a mafia au already, the vampires/vampaneze being rival families, all that jazz. It was one of those things that just clicked in my head. Of course, I thought was going to be perfect. Obviously, it wasn't, it saw two different rewrites before it got to where we are now, without a truly solid plot, it was bad. Probably because the first two attempts happened when I was in 8th grade. It wasn't until after I graduated high school and quarantine kicked this fandom up into high gear that I got it to actually be a decent fic.

This go round was the first time I had titled it "House of the Rising Sun", named for the song by The Animals, because it gave me the vibe of "I am in the mafia and i just shot my best friend and betrayed him and now im driving away from the funeral" and yes I know that is so, so weirdly specific. But the biggest help was when I had a thought of, "What if Wester and Darren met?" and what really kickstarted it was talking with an old rp partner (@maculaxsanguinis I love you and I miss u homie) and i had the thought of "Hey you know what would be fucked up? Wester framing Darren for Alicia's murder" and I got so stuck on that, that HoTRS had to be written. The "Darren gets framed" chapter was the thing I had looked forward to writing the most and I had been so excited about it, you have no clue how hard it was not to spill the beans in the discord. I actually wrote that chapter before the fic had even had it's first chapter thought through, though the original draft was not the chapter I ended up posting. It was the whole reason I ended up making the fic to begin with, and credit to my old friend as they were actually the one to come up with the "I do not know what you are capable of anymore." That hurt both Darren's and my own feelings.

Of course deciding to write that meant I had to figure out how to get there to begin wity, and with the vampires and vampaneze serving as rival families, I had to figure out what to do with The Cirque itself. Making it a bar seemed like this easiest option, giving a place for the story to start, and making Evra a bartender was bc... Well, I wanted Bartender!Evra but also, it gave Darren a way in. Darren talks to Larten at his suggestion, and Evra has no clue the amount of chaos that that will lead him into. That, and seeing as Darren's friendship with Steve has quickly been yeeted, (I made HoTRS!Steve kind of unhinged now that I think about it lmao) he's a good support for Darren, even if I'm not confident in how I write either of them. Not to mention someone who was on the outside of it all who still knew what was going on, which made for some great banter in certain chapters. (The exchange between them before the hit on Murlough is still gold to me.) But also, it's someone close enough not be too effected by everything, but still close enough to get hurt somehow.

But that's the story for how HoTRS ever ended up even so much as an idea in my head, and we've got @evil-dad-evil to thank for fueling my weird mafia obsession, and @maculaxsanguinis to thank for helping me plan one of the most dramatic, and possibly best scenes I ever wrote.

also, monarchy is just such a terrible system but i completely get your interest in the people! for example, i also adore reading and learning about the tudors and the romanovs but only as a part of history and not because i’m such a big fan of the monarchy? lmao if that makes sense.

i think i like britain’s history just because it’s so rich and influential, but like we simply can’t ignore the fucked up shit they’ve done through the centuries. so again, i enjoy it but mostly because i love judging them for their actions lmao

I had found him because I wanted to see who this big bad evil guy was that everyone was talking about, and I... didn’t expect this... giant puppy, basically. Hey!

What are your thoughts on PDA? Believe it or not, I’m... kinda shy. So I worry a lot about making people uncomfortable. That’s not that I don’t WANT to be affectionate with Sam in public. And that’s where I come in. Hi. Most PDA is initiated by me, somehow.

How do you show your affection towards each other/what are your love languages? Sam reacts best to acts of service, I feel like. Though, different moods tend to call for different things. If it’s general love, it’s more of the acts of service. If he’s scared or worried, it’s more physical affection. I show my affection mostly through physical affection and verbal affirmations, since that’s usually what Astra prefers. But I’m big on performing acts of service too.

Who's more introverted and who's more extroverted? We’re both introverts. Oh, but you KNOW you’re the more extroverted one. You can handle being around people way longer than I can. Well, yeah, but it’s not my favorite thing in the world. We took that, uh, personality type test? I’m INFJ, she’s INFP. Just in case that means something to you guys.

Who's the big spoon and who's the little spoon? I’m big spoon. Okay, not ALWAYS. Don’t say it so intensely like that. Nope, it’s definitely always me. Sam, baby, you aren’t fooling anybody. That, like, 5% of times that you’re the little spoon doesn’t make you any less of a man. Can we please move on?

What do you like doing together the most? Reading! Netflix! Making fun of Dean! Sleeping! That’s YOUR favorite, angel.

Tell us a fun fact about the other! Ooooh, okay. Well, Astra takes notes in her books as she reads them. Like, keeps a pencil with her and writes notes on the sides of pages. I have no idea what she’s taking notes on, but I don’t think she knows that we’re not in grade school and she doesn’t have to do the annotations anymore. I trusted you with that information and you betray me. I can’t believe this... Just for that, hi everyone, Sam once tore the whole bunker apart because he couldn’t find this one specific damn flannel, as if he didn’t have seventy other identical ones hanging up in the closet already. Also, I’m an angel, I never went to grade school, asshole. Check and mate. I don’t think that sounded quite as cool and intimidating as you wanted it to.
