I feel like the luckiest Our Flag Means Death fan in the world after the season 2 finale. By a series of incredible circumstances - including a significant metatextual realization that came in at the 11th hour - it was close to perfect for me.
This essay has everything. Completely normal behavior over a television series. Steven Universe references. The David Jenkins School of Whatever is Best for the Bit. Humbling catharsis.
First: this piece does not exist with the central thesis of “it’s okay to not like something but that’s not the same thing as it being bad.” I feel like thousands of words have already been written on this since Thursday, so I’m going to try to not get too in depth on that.
Second, cards on the table, because it’s relevant and I don’t want to waste your time if this is going to sour your ability to hear me out: I’m an Izzy Canyon hater. For MANY reasons, but from way before the concept of the Canyon existed, (some) Izzy fans pinged me in the same way as Snape/Kylo Ren fans did, and before May 2022 was over I went from genuinely enjoying Izzy’s character and place in the narrative to hating him because his fans made it impossible for me to enjoy him anymore.
(SOME! of his fans. Please don’t keep making me say this, although I’m not going to talk about the Canyon directly anymore after this. I know there are a ton of normal Izzy Enjoyers and even Canyonites, I am literally friends with many of them, please take this all in the good faith it’s intended and if you’re not One Of The Bad Ones then you’re fine! I very carefully don’t go anti-Izzy on main, and when I stopped enjoying his character, I stopped writing him into fics. I’m not trying to be a dick, I just want to be honest. Anyway.)
The season 2 finale made me weep over Izzy Goddamn hands.
ALL season long, I was disgruntled. All season long. I really, truly, DEEPLY appreciated what they were doing with his character and arc, I thought it was wildly on brand for the themes of community/queerness in the show, I saw the vision, I liked it!!! But. I wanted a fucking apology, yall. I needed three seconds of “sorry I called you a slur, Ed :/” and that would have been enough. But I had to let it go. It was poisoning my enjoyment of the whole season, which I loved with very little exception (not none!) and I just had to let it go. I wasn’t getting an apology. That didn’t negate what they were doing with his character.
Yall. They withheld the apology on purpose.
THIS FUCKING SHOW!!!
Let’s go back a bit. I was at the episode 6 + 7 screening, and the breakup shook me. Probably a LOT more than if I had watched it alone in bed at 3am on my laptop - five days of no sleep after NYCC, lots of emotions, seeing it on a big screen with a hundred other intense fans, etc etc - but I did see other folks reacting in parallel ways to me when the episodes aired to the regular public, so maybe I would have felt the same way. Regardless, I was mad at Stede and to a lesser extent Ed. I NEEDED AN APOLOGY FOR THAT FISH LINE. I needed it! “Whativah” autocorrects to “WHATIVAH” in my phone. I was going through it.
(When I rewatched the episode when it aired it was not nearly as bad as I remember, lol)
So now the episode 8 screeners go out and the reviews drop and I think I catch one half-glimpse of a “What a heartbreaking ending!” kind of snippet, and some of my friends who are spoiler fiends unintentionally drop little hints about similar ideas (devastating/heartbreaking/split the fandom) type shit.
And I was a fucking WRECK! about it.
I do love this whole show with my whole chest. I do!!! But I’m not rotted because this is an excellent television show, I’m rotted because two old men kiss each other! On the MOUTH!!! in an excellent television show. You get it, right? I’ve written 700,000 words across almost 100 fics and 98% of them are dedicated to those two men falling in love in different universes.
So it just did not even occur to me the “heartbreak/devastation/fandom split” would be about anything but Gentlebeard.
Another piece of this that was fucking me up - David Jenkins and his “satisfactory” ending biz. My brain was reacting like this show was ENDING ending, even if I knew logically! that this is just season 2!!! And I wasn’t ready for that, because what if it wasn’t personally satisfying, and I’m a mess about it? Why was I so worried about not liking it? I’d liked the whole season! Even if they didn’t nail the landing I wasn’t going to stop writing fic or hanging out with my pirate community & friends.
…is what I kept trying to tell myself, but the way anxiety disorders work is funny like that lol. What if I did stop writing fic and hanging out in pirate spaces? That would hurt much more than a show I like disappointing me. And for anyone who’s having that experience with ofmd s2, I’m so very, very sorry. It sucks and that’s where my epiphany came from on Wednesday before the finale.
Because it has happened to me before.
I flit from hyperfocus to hyperfocus, as ya do when you’re spicy, but the last thing to get its hooks in me PROPERLY like pirates was Steven Universe. And I did NOT like the way the regular season ended!!! (I actually really did like most of Future; that’s not what I mean. I mean season 5). I don’t like how they handled the Diamonds, tldr; I think the scope of their villainy got too out of hand, and I was left grieving the thing that had meant enough to me I ran a fan convention for four years based around it.
Side note: imagine if I had channeled the hyperfocus of almost a million words of fanfiction into an American OFMD con instead. We could have made magic :( I did consult with Our Con Means Death though so I am at least a teeny tiny bit of that one!
I did not like the way Steven ended… but I do respect the story they were telling and think they told it well.
I’m still sad about it. Steven is still one of my most beloved, it will always be beautiful and great to me, but that experience did and does sully my memories. There is so, so, so, SO much more good than bad from being in that fandom, and I cherish it. And I hope, if you’re having this experience with OFMD right now, that you’ll find similar comfort.
But, like I said at the top, “it’s okay to not like something but that’s not the same thing as it being bad” has been belabored already by people better at writing about it than me. I just had the incredible privilege to remember my brush with lower case T trauma and having that experience in my last REALLY big deal fandom. That’s why I had been so extra anxious about being disappointed. Because it happened to me before. It helped so much to connect those two.
So the finale happens, and it’s actually about twelve hours of me going from “eh, rushed but fun, whole season was great” to “THIS MAYBE IS THE BEST SHOW OF ALL TIME, ACTUALLY!”
BECAUSE THIS SHOW MADE ME CRY OVER IZZY FUCKING HANDS!!!!
They literally told me this was the story they were telling this season. “Men can change” “The end  of piracy” “Ed leaving Blackbeard behind (ish).”
As for me? I didn’t get an apology for the fish. Instead, I got “Sorry I was a dick.” “You weren’t a dick. Life’s a dick.”
Just… fuckity BAM. THREE FUCKING SENTENCES resolving that fight. Saying so much in so little.
In real life, should these two men have an actual conversation about this shit? Sure!!! But that’s not how OFMD tells its stories!
It works in symbolism. It works in vibes. It works in an hour’s worth of content into each half-hour episode, and for how much lamenting I have done about the pacing, I would prefer that 100x to having to stretch it out too much.
I have said since March 24, 2022 that OFMD wields anachronism as a weapon. First and foremost, it’s fucking funny, but in addition to that, it’s stating clearly: “This is a fantasy world. This is not real history. This show is about romance (and so much more than that), and the rest is just VIBES!!!”
Sometimes vibes can be historical accuracy. Sometimes vibes can be true emotional poignancy. Sometimes vibes can be Ed finding his sunken leathers in the sea, changing underwater somehow, and coming out of the ocean like the Birth of Fucking Venus, because water and rebirth and mermaids and shit is all very prominent this season. And ALSO, and this is very important! BECAUSE IT LOOKS FUCKING COOL!
I don’t want to do much real Izzy meta here. It’s been said by others, and better than me. But it was telegraphed and it was symbolic – he was the paragon of Traditional Piracy in season 1, for goodness’ sake, and Traditional Piracy is Toxic Masculinity, and he was a part of Blackbeard and Ed had to leave Blackbeard behind (yknow, ish), and he got this ABSOLUTLEY FUCKING LOVELY! storyline about appreciating what a (queer) community can do, and god fucking shit fucking dammit… most of all, best of all (for me), was Buttons landing on Izzy’s grave at the end. Men can change. And Izzy DID!!! He did it for Ed. For love. For community. I am puzzled by “it’s fucked up to use Izzy to further Ed’s storyline” because… this was Ed’s season, in the way that season 1 was Stede’s. And Ed cannot be removed from piracy as a whole (neither can Stede!) so to have this old, set in his ways, coded-queerphobic character blossom to the point he can give this gift to Ed and to piracy… idk man. I just find it so fucking beautiful.
It is okay not to like what they did. It’s okay!!! It’s okay, and it’s okay to mourn, and while it’s not okay to do [insert vile behavior here], it’s okay to carefully examine what you think is “bad writing” vs “what you would have preferred to happen” and give good-faith, textually-based criticism on that.
But I want to remind you over and over and over again, this show works on vibes. It tells its stories leaving many, many, many gaps. There are many things I would have liked to see, and y’know what? I would have told the Izzy story differently. I would have personally done it differently. But it’s not my show! It’s not my show, and I am humbled and delighted to remember that, and to appreciate Our Flag Means Death for what it is and not what it isn’t.
Other words have been written better than I could about the 18 months between seasons 1 and 2 and what that does to us as rabid fans with expectations of how things will go. Millions and millions and millions of words have been written about OFMD, fictional and non, and that is going to color our expectations and experience. We had built it up SO MUCH in our minds and along the way I think some of us forgot (INCLUDING ME!!!) that it is first and foremost about Vibes.
The vibes of Izzy’s death are about rebirth and forgiveness and leaving traditional piracy behind. And he got to die in Ed’s arms, knowing (HAPPILY!) that he had been wrong, and giving Ed the gift of letting him know he is loved, and being a part of something. We had a funeral but we also had a wedding. The only constant is change. Men, piracy, Blackbeard; it all changes. And Izzy found peace in that.
Before my last point, I want to @ myself on things I felt versus realizing in the end it is (I will say it until I’m blue in the face) about vibes.
· I was convinced they left Buttons’ transformation ambiguous because they wanted to leave room for it not having been real. NO!!! It is real, until they decided it isn’t. Magic in the OFMD universe? Fucking why not!!! IT’S SYMBOLIC!!! IT’S IMPORTANT TO ED’S STORYLINE AND THE CENTRAL THESES OF THE SHOW!
· I was unhappy, and still am a little, about the Polycule Situation, but now that I realize Oluwande is Zheng’s Stede… I am less so. The Zheng : Auntie :: Ed : Izzy vibes, btw? Fuckin immaculate.
·        Obviously they touched on Stede/Ed’s “killing people trauma” but I’d reallyyyy like Stede to address it, and even though I think Ed’s is left on a very satisfying note, I’d like him to dip a bit more into it as well. But if they don’t, oh well! It’s not like they ignored it, they just didn’t have a Deep Dive like I Wanted Them To!
· They didn’t deal with Ed throwing Stede’s shit away. They just ignored it! Stede started to collect new trinkets, and I believe that was as much about giving the audience back the old feeling of the Revenge as it was anything important (not to say it wasn’t also important thematically!!!). Just like Ed going back to his leathers is both Extremely Important thematically and about putting Taika back in the leathers because that’s what Blackbeard should be wearing for the epic final scenes for the sake of visually keeping the show consistent. That’s Blackbeard’s uniform.
· Stede’s frilly little outfits my beloved. God I hope they give him back some of his frippery in season 3. I think they will re: cursed suit BUT his journey this season was about something else, so!
· Ed’s stupid little non-profit non-apology, oh my god. It was so funny. And there is a transition from eps 5 to 6 where Ed is back in his leathers and the crew is more comfortable around him. They didn’t have to have him do a Real Apology, it’s implied it was all settled. What was the timeline? A day? DOESN’T MATTER, BABY, VIBES!!!
· Lots more, I’m sure, but now that I’ve tried to let it all go, I’m remembering less of what I wanted and appreciating what I got!
And, last point here, I think it is also very very very important to remember that a lot of people are normal about this show. In fact, WAY more people are normal about this show than aren’t. And that is EXTREMELY! IMPORTANT!!! because otherwise it wouldn’t be profitable and we all know what would happen then. We are the core of it, to be sure. Without word of mouth that stems from our intensity, this show would not be NEARLY as successful as it is. I truly, truly believe that.
But.
Do normies need deeply emotional discussions dissecting the central relationships? No. What normies need is Ed and Stede running dramatically toward each other on the beach and kissing. And I am happy, so fucking happy, to realize that’s what I need too. I’ve got fanworks for the rest.
I love this fucking show and this fucking fandom and its fucking creators so much. Fuck.

AVENGE YOU
A/N: yeah, so i could not control myself and just had to write a steve fic after binge watching vol1 in one day so... here we are!
PAIRING: Steve Harrington x girlfriend!reader
WORD COUNT: 1k
WARNING: season 4 spoiler!!!
SUMMARY: When Steve is pulled into the Upside Down through watergate, you do not hesitate before jumping after him.
MASTERLIST | SUPPORT ME!
Tumblr media
“Where we at, Wheeler?” Robin asks and you jump at her voice, eyes still glued to where you saw Steve dive in what feels like forever ago.
“Closing in on a minute,” Nancy answers. Fifty-one seconds, to be exact, because you’ve been counting it.
Longest minute of your life. In your head you’re cursing Steve out for being so damn heroic and diving down into Lovers’ lake to check the possible gate. He shouldn’t have gone alone and now you regret letting him.
The moments pass by, the surface of the water remains still as there’s still no sign of your boyfriend. What if something is down there? What if Vecna got him? Or a Demogorgon? You can’t know for sure what’s down there and he just decided to dive as if there was no danger.
The boat keeps rocking gently, neither of you speaks as you pass one minute and he hasn’t returned. He might be an excellent swimmer, but that’s worth nothing against the monsters of the Upside Down.
You’re just about to start undressing and go after him when he suddenly appears, scaring the living hell out of all of you in the boat.
“I found it!”
“You found it?” Nancy asks in disbelief.
“Are you alright?” you ask at the same time, only wanting to know your boyfriend is fine.
“I found it, yeah,” he nods, grabbing the edge of the boat before turning to you. “And I’m okay, don’t worry.”
Nodding you let out a breath you’ve been holding for a while as you watch him hold onto the edge, seemingly untouched by any monster.
“Dustin, you’re a goddamn Einstein,” Robin talks into the radio to let the kids on land know what’s happening. “Steve found the gate!”
“It’s pretty wild,” Steve starts. You can barely focus on what he’s saying, you just want him out of the water, safe and sound before anything could happen to him. “It’s more a snack-size gate, than a mama gate, but still, it’s pretty damn big.”
Just as he finishes talking, he gets pulled down into the water suddenly, shocking all four of you in the boat. He comes back up a moment later, a confused look on his face about what just happened, his eyes find yours in the dark and then he gets pulled down again. This time he is not coming back.
“Steve! Steve!” you all scream after him, and you’re already taking your jacket off, ready to jump after him.
“What the hell was that, man?!” Eddie shouts.
“Nancy, what happened?” Robin asks, but Nancy is already watching you get ready to jump.
“Y/N, what are you doing?” she asks with wide eyes.
“What does it look like? I’m going to help him,” you say without hesitation before jumping into the water and starting to swim towards the red, throbbing gate on the bottom.
Whatever pulled Steve down is faster than your swimming abilities, you only catch him getting pulled over the gate before he disappears in the other world. Mustering up all your energy you swim as fast as you can, straight to the gate and as you reach it, you don’t even think twice before pushing yourself through it.
Lovers’ lake is completely dry on the other side, where water should be there’s only a sea of vines and as you fight your way completely through the gate you make sure not to touch any of them, knowing they are one entity with Vecna.
Moments later Nancy, Robin and at last Eddie joins you on the other side. A bit farther away you spot Steve, fighting with some weird, bat-like creatures and he is definitely losing. As you start running you see him thrown to the ground, the tail of one of the bats holding him by his neck, strangling him while the others attack him.
“No! Steve!” you scream and grab a paddle from an abandoned boat on your way. He is struggling so badly, the creatures are biting and tearing him apart and you already know you’ll fucking destroy them all for hurting him.
When you finally reach him, you start hitting and kicking them all, wherever you can reach, Nancy, Robin and Eddie joining you as well, fighting the bats like you do this for a living. From the corner of your eyes you see Steve getting up from the ground, gaining control back as he starts throwing the one that’s been strangling him to the ground over and over again as you smack another one in the head so hard it flies to the other direction lifelessly.
Steve finishes off the last one by tearing it apart, blood dripping from his mouth and you throw your weapon to the side as you run up to him in an instant.
“Steve!” you cry out, throwing your arms around him, pulling him against you, his arms circling around your waist as well.
“I’m alright, baby. I’m alright.”
“You almost fucking died!” you sob and if he wasn’t injured you’d definitely smack him in the chest, like you always do when he does something stupid and he just shrugs it off. He’s trying to play it off, but he wouldn’t have survived if you didn’t come after him.
“But I didn’t, because you saved me,” he chuckles, completely out of breath as he pulls back and takes your face in his hands. “My brave girl came after me, huh?”
“I couldn’t just let you die, told you, only I get to murder you,” you try to joke, but tears are still spilling from your eyes, the initial shock and fear setting in now, you didn’t have the time to realize what was truly happening in the middle of everything.
“Of course,” he chuckles. “Vecna’s got nothing on you,” he grins before kissing your forehead.
“Let me see, what did they do to you, how are you?” you ask and take a look at his wounds.
“Well, they took about a pound of flesh,” he breathes out, examining the bites on his abdomen. “But other than that, never been better.”
It’s personal now, I have to avenge you, babe,” you mumble, disapprovingly staring at what those damn bats did to your boyfriend.
“I bet Vecna is shaking in his pants right now,” he chuckles and taking your hand in his he laces his fingers together with yours.
Thank you for reading, please like and reblog if you enjoyed and buy me a coffee if you want to support me!

The grand unified theory of Good Omens S2 hangs on - you guessed it - a double meaning (and art). *Part 2*
Part 1 l Part 2 l Part 3 l Part 4 l Part 5 l The End?
This is major spoilers for season 3 territory. You have been warned. I'm also going to split this into parts because wow, I have so many ✨Clues✨! Come with me on a long and magical journey through time, and trust that I will bring you back to the double meaning of it all very soon.
The second thing that Oofs and Ouches my Bones specifically about the art direction in S2 are the time/place cards. You know, the good old rope and stick cards we all know and love are back in S2E1! - wait a minute...
Tumblr media
Oh. Okay. I guess we're going with a huge organ swell happening in the music at the same time as a gothic font. Seems... awfully religious of them. Let's try again. S2E2?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh shit. 1950s classic Hollywood biblical epic title cards? Really? Okay. But we've already been to London in 1941 in S1 so surely they would just use the same exact title card as last season because it's the SAME SCENE in S2E4 and-
Tumblr media
OH GOD it's a black and white classic horror flick! Be afraid! Cower in fear from the zombies that eat brains. So...I think we're getting a feeling this season that they massively changed up the art direction for the all the Minisode title cards. Except did they? Wait, how did the Resurectionists Minisode start?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That seems... very normal. No crazy "Hollywood" title cards here. And they just punted all the classic rope and stick cards that tell us when and where everything takes place in the whole season?
Tumblr media
They did not. Y'all there are TWO competing ways of showing the audience Time/Place going on in the same episodes. One is canonically familiar, and the other is new, and very *hack-esque*. If only there was another reference to classic cinema somewhere in the title sequence of each episode to explain what was going on with these things AHHHHHHH-
Tumblr media
(If you haven't watched till the end of the opening credits) There's a dude with a big stick waving something in front of the projector in the booth each episode, and presumably this has an impact on what we see on the literal movie screen projecting bits of the story in front of us. So what do we see in front of us from the projector each episode, exactly?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well for one, we can certainly see that Neil Gaiman found a really interesting place to put his name in the openings... right over a lot of the fishy things in each minisode is a FUN WAY TO DO LAMPSHADING, NEIL. At this point you're screaming at me "But what does this have to do with the gangsters, and Maggie, and everything else?" My friend, I am here to tell you that I'm starting to get the feeling The Metatron has been adding bits and pieces (not very well, mind you, he's a hack writer) to change the outcome of season 2.
Would you like to see more clues, and the prestige reveal of what the double meaning is? Part 3 right here!

“For Me?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Spencer reid x Male!Autistic!Reader
Description: Y/n brings spencer an early Christmas gift relating to their shared special interest of the sci-fi fantasy series Dune
Warnings: fluff, possible swearing, spoilers for season 10, spencer being an insecure little cutie-pie
Flufftober day 10: Gift giving
A/N: Sorry it’s kinda short- and i know it’s not Christmas but i read a blurb a while back with a similar prompt/idea and i loved it so im remaking it here! bon journée!
Tumblr media
The snow drifted lazily down from grey clouds- but Y/n was anything but grey today. He had decided that on his lunch break, instead of you know- eating lunch, he would go out to find some early christmas gifts for his boyfriend. Since it was his first Christmas after prison, he wanted to make it extra special. And y/n was doing that by giving spencer as much love and affection as he could, without being inappropriate. Y/n had decided he was willing to endure the teasing from Derek and Emily if it meant he got to put a smile on spencers face. On this particular day spencer was eating his soup at his desk, reading a book when he saw you get up from your desk. Now spencer didnt think anything of it, it was lunch time- hes probably just going to the fridge in the shared kitchenette to get his helping of leftover minestrone soup from the other night. But what did catch spencers attention was when instead of making his to the kitchen y/n started pulling on his winter coat and his spencers scarf.  Spencer looked at Y/n- questioning his actions. “where are you going?” spencer couldn’t help but notice the slightly mischievous glint in his lovers eyes when asked the question. Y/n just responded with a simple “Oh nowhere- but I’ll be back before you know it!” And with that Y/n was gone- already walking through the big glass doors of the BAU after giving spencer a chaste kiss to the lips and sauntering out the door, leaving spencer clueless as he watched his boyfriends back stray farther and farther across the room.
Y/n walked into the bookstore, shaking the snowflakes out his hair and stomping the snow off the bottoms of his beat converse, as a little bell dinged quietly behind him. The sole worker of the quiet shop looked up from the register, throwing y/n a small smile before looking back down at their book. The man made his way to the back of the store first- as thats were the sci-fi books were. As he walked through the worn page scented aisles he ran his fingers across the spines of each book he passed. The uneven surfaces and textures creating a relaxing sensory experience- which Y/n needed especially after how many people had been in the office today.  When did he finally reach the far end of the store- Y/n realized he didn’t know what he was looking for- but he decided that he would know it if he saw it. And boy did he find the right thing. Both spencer and Y/n had just a little bit of an obsession with the sci-fi fantasy series Dune by Issac Asimov. They had read it together- watched the newer movies- and discussed it at length. And now Y/n had found the best gift ever for his boyfriend spencer. It was a first edition set of all 3 books- And one of them- was signed! Spencer was going to freak! Y/n was freaking! Y/ns hands flapped in front of him and he bounced from foot to foot in excitement.
It took him almost no time at all to bring the set to the front and have the books wrapped in paper- he decided to even pay a couple extra dollars to have them put a ribbon on it. His train of thought was that spencer deserved only the best- obviously.
After walking out of the store- the small ding signaling both the beginning and the end of his time in the quiet shop rang out. The cold air hit y/n causing a shiver down his spine as his feet crunched in the thin layer of snow that coated the DC sidewalks. Y/n stood on the side walk for a moment, admiring the snowy environment- but the weight of the bag at his side reminded him of the job at hand. Y/n began walking again- making his way towards the bus stop. The man glanced down at the watch on his wrist (a Christmas gift from Spencer from previous years), he had 20 minutes to get back to Quantico.  It would take him ten minutes on the bus and 5 minutes to get through security and climb the many floors to the BAU, leaving five minutes to give Spencer his pre-Christmas gift.
The bus lurched to a stop 1 street away from the FBI headquarters, and Y/n grabbed the paper bag at his side and skipped off the bus into the chilly December air, excited to give spencer his present.
The big glass doors of the BAU swung open and caught spencers attention from all the way across the room- mainly because of the speed at which Y/n was bounding across the room at. He practically skipped across the bullpen, nearly crashing into spencer as he came to a halt.
“woah Y/n- slow down!” despite his scolding words the rest of his demeanor betrayed him- he had a big smile and was trying not to laugh as he spoke. He pushed y/n back up into a standing position after catching him, blocking his boyfriend from crashing face-first into his desk.
“i would’ve been fine dont worry about it-“ spencer juste sighs in resignation at his boyfriends antics. He then noticed the unusually excited look on Y/ns face and became almost immediately worried. This was Y/n after all. Said man noticed spencers worry and only became more excited before saying “look! i have a gift for you!” Y/n presented the small paper wrapped gift to spencer and his eyes widened, confused.
“what is that?” y/n chuckled at his boyfriends cluelessness- despite being together for years spencer still never quite understood Y/ns caring actions.
“It’s for you- it’s a gift!
“for me?”
“yes for you silly goose! go- open it!! your gonna freak.”
spencer looked at his partner slightly concerned at how excited he was- but still took the brown rectangle from his outstretched hands. The thick brown paper teared despite spencers best efforts. In Y/ns opinion it was an extremely slow way to open the present- and his intent and excited gaze urged his boyfriend on. spencer chuckled and sped up slightly- and when he finally pulled the worn book from the wrapping paper- his eyes widened.
“y/n! is this what i think it is?”
y/n just smiled giddily and childlike at spencers equal excitement. Y/n gestured for him to open it and when he noticed the signature his eyes widened even farther.
“Oh. My. God. Y/n? where did you find this?! its first edition and signed?! oh my goodness darling i love you so much!!”
he pulled y/n in for a tight hug and spun him around before begging y/n to read it with him. Eventually hotch called everyone to the round table for a new case so unfortunately the couple had to pause their excited conversation about the series (much to the relief of derek and emily, whose desks were right near theirs), and make their way towards the round table room. But spencer snuck one more kiss in on his lovers lips before he bounded ahead to excitedly chat with emily about his lunchtime adventures. And as y/ns conversation faded into the background spencer quietly mumbled to him self;
“for me..”
With a gentle smile directed at the back of his boyfriend.
The End

What did you think of the live-action yu yu hakusho I confess that when I finished watching the first episode I had good expectations for the next ones but from episode 3 onwards they lost their hand.
To be honest, I loved it! They skipped all the introductory parts and got right down to the point. It's a rough adaptation of the original, but the action scenes are amazing! I felt the love of everyone involved towards Togashi's work. There were more highs than lows.
*CONTAINS SPOILERS*
Togashi wanted to draw a battle shounen, but since it was his first battle series, his editor advised him to take it easy at first. The first chapters were stand-alone adventures of Yusuke's spirit helping others. They weren't even adapted into the anime. Although I love those early stories, I don't think they are crucial to the story. I missed the comedy aspects though, that's what makes Yu Yu Hakusho so appealing. Yusuke's resurrection was a bit rushed, but I loved that "Hohoemi no Bakudan" (anime opening song) was playing on the truck's radio. I also didn't mind a 17-year old Yusuke or Kurama.
Even though they gave a more actual look to the characters, like Botan wearing peep-toes heels and Kuwabara with a dyed blonde hair instead of his iconic pompadour, we can still feel an atmosphere from the 90s in the scenery.
The stealing of the Artifacts of Darkness was so well adapted. Yusuke VS Gouki was an impressive fight. Masaru finally got to thank Yusuke, something that I missed in the original. Kurama telling his story to Yusuke at the hospital was genial as well. I think the motive that driven Hiei to steal the kouma sword in the live action suited him better. Togashi only made Hiei a main character because his editor told him so. That evil Hiei who kidnapped Keiko is so different from the Hiei who showed up later. Making Elder Toguro do the dirty job was more interesting! I'm just curious what they are going to do about Shigure in case of a second or third season. They probably have something in mind already!
Genkai's Tournament/Training was there in a different way. I don't care that much about Rando, but I missed all the pain the original Yusuke went thought to master the reiko hadouken technique. It was a little disappointing to see him absorbing the spirit wave with just an "okay". But, I'm glad they included some iconic moments of his training, like when he's upside-down balancing himself up with only his index finger on a needle.
Probably, what I missed the most was The Saint Beasts Arc. It was during this arc that the four guys got to know each other better and form a bond. Keiko and Botan also worked together and became friends. Considering the budget, I'm aware the live action didn't have time and money to produce it, they had to focus on the first big villain of Yu Hakusho, Younger Toguro.
Filming a whole Dark Tournament would be too hard, expensive, and maybe a little tiring to watch. Although the Rescue Yukina Arc and the Dark Tournament Saga were re-written, all elements from the original series were there:
They showed both Tarukane's mansion and The Hanging Neck Island;
Sakyo needed money to open a big hole to the Demon World. Goro Inagaki also slayed as Sakyo;
Younger Toguro wanted the same thing, he became too strong for the Human World;
Elder Toguro was insanely crazy. Probably, the best villain of Kenichi Takito's career;
A bunch of rich old dudes from BBC gambling;
Tarukane making Yukina cry to sell her hiruseki stones;
The random guy trying to help Yukina. Instead of killing her bird friends, Elder Toguro killed him.
There wasn't Botan and Keiko helping each other, but instead Keiko and Yukina teaming up, and I really enjoyed it;
Kuwabara falling in love at first sight, and asking Yukina to not hate all humans;
Best scenes and lines from Hiei VS Zeru and Kurama VS Roto were incorporated in the fights against Bui and Karasu;
Youko Kurama appeared! Jun Shison nailed it!
In the original, only Kuwabara didn't know about Genkai's death, I liked that in the live action Koenma kept it a secret from Yusuke as well. Elder Toguro making a puppet of Genkai out of his body was amazing!
Younger Toguro "killing" Kuwabara;
The memorable 100% Toguro VS Yusuke's spirit gun;
Sakyo telling the original plan was to make Toguro lose on purpose, so he could collect money from the rich. Also, betting his own life in front of Koenma;
It was interesting that Sakyo told his story and how he had bet his own life a few times to Tarukane instead of Toguro. I felt the Tarukane from the live action was a little bit more human. The actor did a pretty good job. Genkai's dead by the hands of Younger Toguro happened too quick and was disappointing, but they made up for that by showing their amazing goodbye scene in the Spirit World. Young Meiko Kaji was dazzling.
In the first episode, Koenma had sadness in his voice when he mentioned the former spirit detective. There was also that post-credits scene with Elder Toguro. I really hope there will be a second season. I think the Black Chapter Saga is much easier and more interesting to adapt.
I think those who have already read the manga or watched the anime, felt the love all the cast and staff have for Togashi's work. The new generation will probably buy the manga and watch the anime. The live action will surely bring new fans to the Yu Yu Hakusho franchise!
Netflix announced a new One Piece anime by Wit, made in partnership with Toei Animation. I'm also hoping that with the huge success of the live action, some anime studio or even Studio Pierrot will produce a remake of the Yu Yu Hakusho anime too.
By the way, I recommend watching the "Making of Yu Yu Hakusho". The main cast talks about all the trial-and-error process during the shoot. Action Director Takahito Ouchi also shares behind-the-scenes stories. They gave their blood to shoot this series! RESPECT!

let me do this for you
"Lu Guang’s limbs feel heavy as he climbs the stairs, every changed minute weighing down his body as he goes to check on Cheng Xiaoshi. He wishes he could do today over again. He doesn’t know if he’d have the strength to do today over again." Lu Guang experiences Cheng Xiaoshi being sick for the first time. Twice.
My long-awaited Link Click fic is finally here!! I have been so excited to post this for MONTHS because it's genuinely one of my favorite things I've written. I love Link Click for letting me write just about anything with a layer of agony over it because Lu Guang is in a permanent state of anxious paranoia about messing up the timeline. It means even the funny bits include angst :)
So this baby's got it all! Sickfic shenanigans, big sister Qiao Ling, whiny Cheng Xiaoshi, Lu Guang feeling like he's mourning every time he looks at Cheng Xiaoshi's face, soup..... What more could you ask for?
(Spoilers for season 2. Content warning for vomiting. 12k words. Ignore the fact that I completely messed up the layout of the studio and then didn't want to change it. The living room and their made-up kitchen are on their own separate floor, because I said so.) (ao3 link)
---
Dingdingding. Dingdingding. Dingdingding.
Lu Guang cracks his eyes open and feels around next to his pillow for his phone, thumbing at  the screen to turn off his morning alarm. Early morning sunlight is already filtering in through the window, so Lu Guang relents that it’s time to start the day. He pulls himself down the ladder, ignoring the groans from Cheng Xiaoshi coming from the bottom bunk as his own phone begins to buzz. Lu Guang silently descends the stairs, allowing Cheng Xiaoshi his customary extra few minutes of sleep while Lu Guang prepares tea and a simple breakfast for the two of them.
After living together for almost a year, Lu Guang enjoys the comfort he finds in this familiar morning routine. He sets the breakfast on the table and sets to eating his own, waiting for his roommate.
But Cheng Xiaoshi never comes down. Lu Guang waits patiently, knowing that Cheng Xiaoshi is a sloth and some days he takes longer to rouse himself than others. But after watching the time tick by on his watch for 21 minutes, he can no longer idly wait. Lu Guang climbs the stairs, ready to bang his fist on the doorframe to wake his roommate up, when Cheng Xiaoshi flies past him, almost knocking Lu Guang over, and runs straight for the bathroom.
Lu Guang waits outside the bathroom door impatiently. “Hurry up or we’re going to be late—”
And that’s when Cheng Xiaoshi starts retching.
The morning does not get more pleasant after that. As it turns out, the only thing more annoying that an overly chipper, healthy Cheng Xiaoshi is a sick one.
---
“Was it something you ate?” Lu Guang asks Cheng Xiaoshi reproachfully. The first round of puking had only lasted a few minutes, but before Lu Guang even had a chance to speak to Cheng Xiaoshi properly, he was back in the bathroom, coughing and moaning as he continued expelling everything he had in his stomach.
Cheng Xiaoshi is on the couch in the living room now, looking a little green and definitely not in the mood for answering questions. The quilt from his bed is wrapped around his body, coming up over head to look like a hood.
“How should I know? It’s not like the answer was written at the bottom of the toilet bowl.”
Lu Guang sighs. “We ate the same meals yesterday. I was just wondering if your food felt off in any way.”
“If it felt off, I wouldn’t have eaten it!”
This is debatable. Lu Guang has seen Cheng Xiaoshi eat plenty of things in the name of “not letting it go to waste” that seemed questionable. While this situation is an appropriate time to mention that fact, Lu Guang refrains.
“Okay, well maybe you have a virus, then.”
Cheng Xiaoshi holds a hand to his stomach pathetically. “Can you cure me, Lu Guang?”
“No, but I can go downstairs to open the studio alone while you stay up here and keep your puke away from the customers.”
This is apparently the wrong response, because Cheng Xiaoshi’s eyes widen like he was just told that Lu Guang is moving out of the country today.
“You’re leaving me?” he cries. “In my hour of need, you’re going to abandon me?”
Lu Guang rolls his eyes. “I’m going to be directly underneath you, idiot. Just call me if you need something. Someone has to pay rent this month.”
“Do you think Qiao Ling would come take care of me?”
“Qiao Ling has her own priorities besides dealing with your whining. Go lay back down; I’ll check on you in a few hours.”
Lu Guang leaves silently. He wasn’t wrong; they really did need to open the studio today. There were customers scheduled to pick up their prints this morning. He makes sure to take his phone off silent mode as he works, in case Cheng Xiaoshi calls for something, but he never does. Lu Guang finds himself staring nervously at his phone throughout the morning. Is Cheng Xiaoshi still throwing up? Has he made it to the toilet every time, or is he defacing every surface of their apartment in revenge? Does he need something? Why hasn’t he called?
By lunch time, Lu Guang can’t stand it. He locks up the studio and goes upstairs to check on his roommate. His worries melt away when he sees Cheng Xiaoshi in the exact same position he was left in, strewn across the couch with a plastic-lined wastepaper basket on the floor beside him, groaning pathetically.
“Lu Guaaaaaang….” Cheng Xiaoshi moans, long and desperate. “Everything huuuurts.”
Lu Guang tries a gentle approach. “Could you be more specific? Is it your stomach? Does your body ache? Are you feverish?”
Cheng Xiaoshi pulls the quilt higher, tucking it under his chin. “I’m not gonna make it. Call Qiao Ling. Tell her to come quickly so I can update my will.”
Lu Guang sighs. “You’re not dying, idiot. You probably have a virus. Or it was something you ate. Now could you tell me the rest of your symptoms?”
Cheng Xiaoshi ignores his questions yet again, cracking his eyes open slowly, like it’s taking him a great amount of effort to do so. “Have you called Qiao Ling? Does she know I’m ill?”
“I could help you get better if you’d just tell me what’s wrong,” Lu Guang says crossly. The quilt is pulled up so high he can barely see Cheng Xiaoshi under the blanket. Does he have a fever? Does he need medication? He debates leaning forward to feel his forehead but doesn’t know a way to pull it off without it seeming strange. He refrains. “I know your stomach is upset, but what else—”
Cheng Xiaoshi rolls over flippantly. “Tell me when Qiao Ling gets here. I’ll only speak to her. I’m taking you out of my will.”
Lu Guang looks to the ceiling, balling his hands into fists and breathing slowly. After a few slow exhales he calmly tells Cheng Xiaoshi that he should try eating something small to settle his stomach. He goes to their pantry and prepares a small dish full of plain wonton strips and a glass of cool water.
“I have to go back to work. Please try to eat something,” Lu Guang says evenly. He ignores the cries of “Qiao Lingggggggg!” echoing through the apartment as he leaves.
Lu Guang returns to the front counter, pulling out several canisters of film that still needed to be developed for customers later this week. Thankfully, they don’t have any new clients from Qiao Ling. Lu Guang isn’t entirely sure how their powers would work if Cheng Xiaoshi was sick during a dive. His physiology tends to get transferred to the person in the past he possesses. Would their client start puking uncontrollably mid-dive? Lu Guang dreads the thought.
No, this is better. Let Cheng Xiaoshi sleep if off while Lu Guang tends to the studio. Cheng Xiaoshi will have to dip into his meager savings to pay for his half of the rest this month if he doesn’t come back to work in the next few days, but that can’t be helped. If he’s lucky, Qiao Ling will be merciful on him.
Lu Guang stares at the canisters on the counter before him. The studio is blessedly quiet without Cheng Xiaoshi’s usual chittering and loud pop music playing through the speakers of his phone. Lu Guang should be reveling in the silence, but he does feel marginally bad for leaving Cheng Xiaoshi by himself upstairs, no matter how irritating his dramatics are.
Lu Guang picks up his cell phone and dials Qiao Ling’s number.
---
Qiao Ling arrives around closing time, a paper bag full of groceries on her hip as she opens the front door to the Time Photo Studio, the pre-recorded greeting ringing through the silence.
“Is he in bed?” Qiao Ling asks, before remembering her manners and greeting Lu Guang properly.
Lu Guang waves away formalities. “He’s on the couch. He keeps calling for you,” he tells her, his normal deadpan tone giving way to the smallest hint of annoyance.
Qiao Ling rolls her eyes, but fondly, and hurries up the stairs. Lu Guang flips the sign on the door to ‘Closed’ and follows her up to the apartment.
“Where’s my patient?” Qiao Ling calls in a sing-song tone. A long, monotonous “uuuuuuuuuuhn” echoes back to her, indicating that Cheng Xiaoshi is still alive, and probably in the same condition Lu Guang left him in.
His assumptions are proven correct when Lu Guang follows Qiao Ling to the living room. Though now Cheng Xiaoshi has a hand over his forehead like a swooning maiden as well. Lu Guang crosses his arms at Cheng Xiaoshi’s childishness. He expects Qiao Ling to share in his annoyance, but she smiles good naturedly as she sits down on the edge of the couch to pull his hand from his face and replace it with her own, pushing his bangs back to feel his temperature.
Lu Guang ignores the odd feeling in his gut watching the tender gesture. Their relationship has always been a curious thing to him. As an only child, sibling dynamics have always been interesting to observe. Though they may not be related by blood, Qiao Ling and Cheng Xiaoshi have been together for half of their lives, and little moments like this show their closeness. While Lu Guang spent most of the day reluctant to get within a few feet of Cheng Xiaoshi, Qiao Ling presses her hand gently to his forehead with no hesitation, frowning at whatever she feels. Lu Guang wonders if he should have pushed past his own reservations and checked his temperature himself earlier. He silently curses them for not owning a thermometer.
“Sorry I’m late,” Qiao Ling tells Cheng Xiaoshi. “I was with Xu ShanShan and Dong Yi at the new noodle shop downtown and the trains were far behind schedule. I would have taken a cab back if I knew it was urgent.”
“I almost perished while you were gone. And Lu Guang just left me here!” Cheng Xiaoshi accuses sourly, making a face at Lu Guang that he pointedly ignores.
She pats his cheek twice. “Don’t be like that. Lu Guang was running the studio. Now,” she claps her hands together, “would you like some soup?”
Whatever dumb act Cheng Xiaoshi has been putting on for the whole conversation falls away from his face, his tired eyes lighting up again with genuine happiness. “Really?”
Qiao Ling smiles once more, then hefts her bag from the market back onto her hip and carries it to the kitchen.
“Why don’t you go upstairs and sleep in an actual bed for a while?” she calls over the rustling of the bag as she pulls ingredients out and sets them on their small counter. “Lu Guang can help you!”
Lu Guang isn’t sure what face he is making, but if he had to guess, it probably looks similar to the expression he made last week when he stepped in dog poop on the sidewalk. Cheng Xiaoshi stares back at him, eyes narrowed.
“I can take myself, actually.”
He pulls himself to his feet, albeit much slower than he would on a typical day. Cheng Xiaoshi is normally so bouncy and energetic that Lu Guang often wonders if he’s possessed by a child. Lu Guang’s own muted personality is only made more apparent the longer he spends time by Cheng Xiaoshi’s side.
Cheng Xiaoshi drapes the quilt over his shoulders and shuffles out of the room past Lu Guang. After he leaves, Lu Guang glances at the lined trash can they left by the couch; mercifully, it’s still empty.
Qiao Ling is already in the kitchen, pulling out a few of the ingredients from her bag and setting them on their cutting board beside their hot plate. Calling the meager set-up a “kitchen” is more generous than it deserves. With a sink and a few feet of counter space, the area barely counts as a kitchenette, but Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang make do. It’s not like either of them do much cooking anyway. Their singular hot plate is more than enough to boil water for cup noodles.
He approaches the kitchen and sits on a wooden chair near the counter, watching Qiao Ling as she chops vegetables.
“You’re being awfully nice to him.”
“And you’re being awfully cold,” she counters, thought she doesn’t sound upset by it. “What’s gotten you in such a mood? Did he do something?”
Lu Guang rests his chin on his fist. “No, he’s just been trying my patience all day.”
“That’s nothing new,” she says with a laugh. “He’s always like that when he’s sick. He used to drive my parents crazy when we were kids. Always wallowing and complaining whenever he got even the slightest cold.”
Lu Guang internally wilts. So he’s going to be dealing with dramatics like this every time Cheng Xiaoshi gets sick? How many times will he be written out of his will?
“And you humor him?” Lu Guang asks.
“He’s sick,” Qiao Ling says with a shrug. “It’s the one time I’ll let it slide.”
They fall into an easy silence for a few minutes, Qiao Ling getting a pot of broth simmering on the hot plate as she chops the vegetables, the quiet shuck shuck shuck of the knife against the wooden cutting board being the only sound in the room as Lu Guang reflects on his own attitude.
“What kind of soup are you making him?” Lu Guang asks after a while, peering at the ingredients spread across the counter.
“I’m honestly not sure,” Qiao Ling says dubiously. “When we were little, Cheng Xiaoshi used to always claim that his mom had a soup recipe that would cure you of just about anything. During all his complaining he would beg for his mother’s soup. Taking pity on him, I made him some when we were maybe eleven. He ate it, but according to him it tasted all wrong. It’s been my mission since then to try and replicate the recipe correctly.”
“Are you close?”
Qiao Ling shrugs and shakes her head. “Who knows?”
She points to a piece of paper she set on the counter earlier. A basic herbal soup recipe was written at the top, and the bottom had subsequent ingredients written down, scratched out, added quantity to, over and over again in a formless mess.
“These are all my attempts so far. I found out it starts with chicken bone broth. And contains daikon radishes. And root vegetables. And fennel. But the rest is just blind guessing. He tries to offer me suggestions, but I don’t even know if he remembers what the original tasted like at this point.”
“But you make him soup all the same?”
Qiao Ling nods. “I make him soup all the same. He likes being cared for.”
They devolve into silence once more, this time more comfortably than the last. Lu Guang observes Qiao Ling as she works, stirring the broth and submerging herbs in a small pouch made of cheesecloth. Occasionally, Lu Guang glances at the scribbled-over piece of paper, tallying up all of Qiao Ling’s attempts to replicate Cheng Xiaoshi’s mother’s recipe over the years. Given the amount of time Cheng Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling spent arguing, Lu Guang could hardly believe this caring and sweet side of Qiao Ling. They weren’t really siblings, but all the scribbles on that sheet of paper surely remind Lu Guang of something a sister would do for her brother.
After several cycles of simmering, taste-testing, adding ingredients, and simmering once more, Qiao Ling finally declares the soup to be finished. After searching their tiny kitchen and being unable to locate their small wooden serving tray, Qiao Ling settles for retrieving Cheng Xiaoshi from his bed and depositing him in the kitchen beside Lu Guang at the counter.
If his movements were slightly sluggish before, the slowness is only exaggerated now as he gingerly lowers himself to his seat. Lu Guang recalls the small dish of wonton strips and glass of water on the coffee table when he and Qiao Ling came to see him this evening, untouched from how Lu Guang had left them. Cheng Xiaoshi probably hasn’t had anything to eat or drink all day for fear of being sick again. The usually fluffy hair stuck to his temples with sweat indicates he probably does have a fever.
Lu Guang is so focused on Cheng Xiaoshi that he’s surprised when he looks down to see not one bowl of soup, but three being prepared by Qiao Ling.
“We all need to taste-test it, don’t we?” Qiao Ling says with a grin she aims at Cheng Xiaoshi. She slides the bowls across the counter to the boys and places a bowl in front of herself as well.
Cheng Xiaoshi, though still looking haggard, grins back like this is custom, and digs into his soup with a gusto Lu Guang didn’t think he was capable of, given his ailment. Across the counter, Qiao Ling sips from her spoon as well. Not wanting to be rude, Lu Guang dips his spoon into his bowl and brings it to his lips, tasting the soup Qiao Ling has spent the past few hours perfecting. Warmth floods his chest as he swallows the spoonful, and despite not being sick himself, Lu Guang can feel the earthy root vegetables and flavorful broth breathing new life into him. He had no idea Qiao Ling was such a fantastic cook.
“Well?” Qiao Ling asks, looking to Cheng Xiaoshi, who was currently devouring his bowl like he thinks it might be taken from him if he slows down.
He stops suddenly, his spoon clanking against his bowl. He swallows thoughtfully.
“I think you’re getting close!” he says, his smile as sunny as ever. His tone isn’t patronizing; there’s a naïve kindness to it that prevents Qiao Ling from being hurt, though there is a slight disappointment in her eyes that Lu Guang catches, though Cheng Xiaoshi doesn’t seem to. It must be frustrating that after all these attempts she’s yet to nail down the correct flavor.
“Maybe it could use more sweetness?” Cheng Xiaoshi muses, like that was something common in bone broth soups.
Nonetheless, Qiao Ling jots down the critique on her cheat sheet diligently, the character for “sweeter” followed by several question marks. Lu Guang doesn’t blame her confusion. His critique is both vague and unhelpful.
All of them finish their bowls of soup, regardless of lack of sweetness. Lu Guang can’t help but marvel at the rich and flavorful taste of the soup, whipped together in only a few hours’ time. When Cheng Xiaoshi begins nodding off at the counter, Qiao Ling places a hand on his shoulder and instructs him to go back to bed.
He nods, sending her a sleepy smile before turning to leave the kitchen.
“Thank you, my landlady!” he says jovially.
“Bah, bah, get out of her before I charge you for it,” Qiao Ling says, sounding more like her usual self, though with the same gentle teasing in her tone she’s been using all day.
Lu Guang waits for Cheng Xiaoshi to leave the room before turning to look Qiao Ling in the eye.
“Sweeter?”
Qiao Ling sucks her lips in for a moment, trying to hold it back, but eventually giggles tumble out of her, the sound of her laughter bouncing off the tiles of the kitchen. Even Lu Guang snorts, unable to help himself.
“He’s always like this,” she says fondly, as she begins ladling the soup into smaller containers to fit in Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi’s fridge. “I try to make him the soup he wants, but he’s so unhelpful. What could have possibly made her soup sweet? Beets?” she asks incredulously. “That would change the color of the broth too much, though. Ah! I can’t even make a guess right now. One day I’m just going to put a spoonful of sugar in his bowl and see if that makes a difference.”
Lu Guang chuckles softly and offers to finish the dishes for her since she cooked the meal. She stays in the apartment a little while longer, chatting with Lu Guang while he washes, and she dries. Afterwards, Lu Gung instructs Qiao Ling to go home before it gets too dark. Qiao Ling agrees, going upstairs to check on Cheng Xiaoshi once more before leaving for the night.
Lu Guang ponders staying downstairs for a few minutes, allowing Cheng Xiaoshi time to get settled into sleep before going up to their room. He has a book he’s been meaning to finish, so Lu Guang goes to the living room and turns on a small lamp, prepared to stay a while.
He only manages to read a few pages before he hears rustling from the top of the stairs, and soon Cheng Xiaoshi is descending them slowly, still wrapped in his quilt.
“I thought you were going to bed,” says Lu Guang.
Cheng Xiaoshi shakes his head petulantly. “I’ve been sleeping all day! I don’t think I can anymore. Watch something with me.”
Lu Guang looks at the novel in his hands, then back to his roommate uncertainly. Cheng Xiaoshi looks at him with hopeful eyes, like he’s a child and Lu Guang is a strict parent deciding whether he’s allowed to stay up past curfew. He really does revert into a younger state when he’s sick.
Lu Guang knows he should tell Cheng Xiaoshi to go back to bed; rest was an important part of getting well again, and even in the dim light he can still see how pale his complexion is. But Cheng Xiaoshi blinks his brown eyes at him once more and Lu Guang feels himself giving in.
“Fine,” Lu Guang says, sounding resigned. He ignores the way his face warms when Cheng Xiaoshi smiles at him and plops down right beside him on the couch. “But only for a short while.” He leans forward to open his laptop on the coffee table and pull up a movie from a few days ago that they never finished. When he leans back on the couch, Cheng Xiaoshi is practically sidled up next to him, legs touching and giant quilt pressing into Lu Guang’s side.
Lu Guang raises an eyebrow, before adding:
“And if you puke on me, I’m never speaking to you again.”
Cheng Xiaoshi laughs and scoots over to the other side of the couch instead. Lu Guang uses his foot to push the small garbage can to Cheng Xiaoshi’s side of the couch as well, though he doesn’t think Cheng Xiaoshi has gotten sick since this morning.
The tense atmosphere from the day has finally fallen from between them, and they watch the movie peacefully. Whenever Lu Guang glances at Cheng Xiaoshi from the corner of his eye, his eyes are bright.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lu Guang jolts awake to the sound of dinging beside his ear.
His alarm. It was just his alarm. He looks around the room in the dim light of the morning sun. His books are still neatly piled on the desk, Cheng Xiaoshi’s clothes from yesterday are still scattered across the floor. He breathes slowly.
He thought this would be easier. He’d only experienced Cheng Xiaoshi being gone from this world for a few hours, so by comparison a world where he softly snores beneath Lu Guang, oblivious to his phone’s own buzzing alarm, should be normal by comparison. But being in this timeline is like wearing a shirt that’s buttoned up wrong. Maybe it’s his body, a year younger, that feels so odd. Maybe it’s this room, this hazy, peaceful atmosphere that’s getting to him. His alarm is still distantly ringing in his ears, and it sounds so much like the sirens from that night. He’s been in this new (old?) life for a month, but nothing has felt comfortable yet.
Lu Guang tries not to dwell on it as he quietly climbs down the ladder of their shared bunkbed and makes his way to the kitchen in his t-shirt and sleep shorts. He’ll make them tea, fix up a simple breakfast, and keep pretending that a month ago his hands weren’t soaked in the hot pulses of Cheng Xiaoshi’s blood. Lu Guang can still feel the crusty sensation of where it dried between his fingers. He washes his hands, taking extra time to scrub them like the phantom blood can finally be burned from his skin’s memory if he uses water that’s hot enough.
When his skin starts to feel sensitive, he finally gives it a rest. He needs to stop doing that. Cheng Xiaoshi is going to notice his scrubbing one of these days and question him about it. He dries his hands on a dishtowel, a fleck of blood still visible only to him on his right knuckle. He won’t wash it again, he won’t wash it again, he won’t—
Where is Cheng Xiaoshi anyway? Shouldn’t he be up by now?
Lu Guang shoves his hands in his pockets and ascends the stairs. He wonders how he should wake him. He doesn’t want to startle him, but Cheng Xiaoshi’s laziness is going to cut breakfast short. Now when they open the studio, he’s going to spend all morning complaining about his hunger, and Lu Guang will spend all morning secretly considering ordering delivery for him, before reminding himself that he never would have done that two years ago to placate him.
Lu Guang’s head is still buzzing with too many colliding thoughts when Cheng Xiaoshi whips open their bedroom door and flies past him, slamming the bathroom door shut louder than necessary.
Lu Guang sighs and paces over the bathroom door, calling “Hurry up in there or we’re going to be—”
That’s about all he gets out before he hears a horrible guttural cough, then the echoing sound of liquid splashing against the toilet water.
Oh.
Lu Guang had forgotten all about this day. This was the first time he had seen Cheng Xiaoshi sick. He’d spent the morning throwing up and the afternoon wasting away on their couch in the living room, whining while Lu Guang tried to figure out what was wrong.
“Cheng Xiaoshi? What’s wrong?” Lu Guang calls through the bathroom door.
More retching. A dumb question, but he’s sure he must have asked something like this the first time around. He opens the bathroom door slowly, peering in to see Cheng Xiaoshi kneeling before their toilet, forehead resting on his forearms as he pants.
“Sick,” Cheng Xiaoshi replies finally, like that wasn’t glaringly obvious.
“Do you think you can stand?” Lu Guang asks.
Cheng Xiaoshi nods, panting for a moment longer before pulling himself to his feet carefully. He leaves the bathroom, and they speak for a moment before Cheng Xiaoshi rushes back to the bathroom a second time. Lu Guang already knows, but says anyway, “You’re in no condition to work today. You should go back to sleep.”
He doesn’t remember Cheng Xiaoshi looking this miserable. His skin is pale and clammy, his bangs hanging limply in front of his eyes as he nods. Lu Guang helps him to his feet this time, allowing himself to keep a hand between Cheng Xiaoshi’s shoulders as he walks him to the couch. He leaves for a moment to get him a quilt to cover up with and remembers to grab the wastepaper basket from their room, too, lest Cheng Xiaoshi need to be sick again and not be able to make it to the toilet. Did he continue throwing up the rest of the day? Lu Guang wishes he had committed more of these days to memory.
He passes the quilt over to Cheng Xiaoshi, setting the basket on the floor and lining it with a plastic bag.
“Do you think it was something you ate?”
“How should I know? It’s not like it was written in the bottom of the toilet bowl!” he says indignantly.
Lu Guang never ended up getting sick last time, and they ate the same food yesterday, so he doubts it was food poisoning. Most likely a 24-hour bug that Cheng Xiaoshi was unfortunate to catch. Lu Guang watches Cheng Xiaoshi wrap the quilt around his shoulders, going as far as to pull it over his head as he shivered. Lu Guang doesn’t know how he missed Cheng Xiaoshi’s fever before. He’s obviously freezing right now. Guilt claws at Lu Guang’s throat. He swallows it down.
“It’s probably a stomach virus,” he says curtly.
Cheng Xiaoshi looks at him pitifully. “Can you cure me, Lu Guang?”
Lu Guang internally reminds himself of all the good times he will spend with Cheng Xiaoshi after this. One day of sickness is not the end of the world (Lu Guang already knows what that is), so he shouldn’t feel so terrible about leaving Cheng Xiaoshi alone. It’s what he did last time, so he has to follow the flow of the timeline.
“No. What I can do is go down to open the studio. And you can stay up here and keep your puke away from the customers.”
“You’re leaving me?” Cheng Xiaoshi cries. “In my hour of need, you’re going to abandon me?”
Never, he thinks desperately. But this is not the same as that night.
It’s not that serious, Lu Guang reminds himself. It’s one day of being apart from him. The first time this happened Lu Guang had been secretly pleased to be away from Cheng Xiaoshi’s sickness. He didn’t know how to deal with taking care of someone, and it seemed easier to leave Cheng Xiaoshi to his own devices while Lu Guang managed their responsibilities with the studio. He tries to channel that energy now, putting on a show of rolling his eyes at Cheng Xiaoshi.
“I’m going to be directly underneath you, idiot. Just call me if you need something. Someone has to pay rent this month.”
“Do you think Qiao Ling will come to take care of me?”
“Maybe later,” Lu Guang says, thinking of Qiao Ling and her morale-saving soup showing up later today.
“Later? I’m sick now,” Cheng Xiaoshi laments, trying to sit up without jostling himself.
Suddenly, Cheng Xiaoshi sucks in a sharp breath; Lu Guang’s back straightens at the noise.
It’s too similar to the sounds Cheng Xiaoshi made that night. Lu Guang’s skin pebbles with a sudden chill, and his palms begin to sweat instinctively. He can feel the world begin to spin when Cheng Xiaoshi leans forward and throws up what’s left in him in the garbage can beside him.
The sound and the smell and the memories are too much for him, so Lu Guang turns on his heel and leaves the room.
---
This is not a great time to be having a panic attack. Lu Guang has closed himself in the darkroom and is currently counting backwards from one hundred, telling himself that Cheng Xiaoshi is fine and that today is normal and that no one is gasping for their last breaths right now, blood gurgling from a bullet hole in their chest.
But he’s fucked things up. Lu Guang doesn’t remember how he left Cheng Xiaoshi last time, but it wasn’t that suddenly and it definitely wasn’t mid-puke. So now on top of controlling the PTSD he’s not supposed to have, Lu Guang also must control the panic that he’s fucking up a timeline he’s not supposed to know about. There’s too many fears to keep track of, and the day has hardly even begun. Lu Guang looks down at his shaking hands, then immediately regrets that choice, the red lighting of the darkroom not helping his spiraling mental state at all.
He goes to the bathroom in the studio, splashing water on his face and washing his hands for far longer than necessary before leaving, then heads back up to the apartment to fix things.
Cheng Xiaoshi looks at him bitterly.
“I—” Lu Guang looks at him guiltily. “I don’t do well around puking.”
“I noticed,” Cheng Xiaoshi says.
“I’m sorry,” Lu Guang says, not knowing what else to say.
Cheng Xiaoshi’s expression softens. Lu Guang could never understand this. How easily forgiven he was.
He grabs the trash can and empties it into the garbage in the kitchen, returning it by Cheng Xiaoshi’s side with a fresh bag in it.
Concern paints Cheng Xiaoshi’s pale features. “Are you sure you aren’t sick too, Lu Guang? You don’t look well.”
Lu Guang remembers his quest to return to the normal timeline before he hits an unchangeable node.
“I’m fine. I should go open the studio. I have my phone, so call if you need anything.”
He heads downstairs, and after a few minutes of preparation, opens the studio. The world won’t stop turning just because of one man’s existential crisis. The morning is mostly quiet, only a few customers coming in to pick up prints from the day before. Lu Guang could spend his free moments developing more photographs in the darkroom, but he can’t bear to go back into the red lighting alone just yet. He spends the morning dusting the studio and wiping down the front windows, completing small, menial tasks while he waits for lunchtime to go check on Cheng Xiaoshi.
He doesn’t call, but Lu Guang doesn’t expect him to, so the morning passes by in relative peace. It reminds Lu Guang of times when Cheng Xiaoshi is on a dive and Lu Guang is left to take care of things while he’s gone. He’s used to this, so he tries not to let it bother him that precious moments he could be spending with Cheng Xiaoshi are being wasted alone.
At lunchtime he closes the studio and returns to the apartment. Cheng Xiaoshi is right where he left him, the quilt pulled up to his chin as he lies on the couch.
“Lu Guaaaaaang…” Cheng Xiaoshi moans, long and desperate. “Everything huuuurts.”
“What hurts?” Lu Guang asks. His body, probably. With the fever and shivering his whole body probably aches. “Is it your stomach still? Your body? Are you going to be sick again?”
Cheng Xiaoshi only grumbles irritably. “You ask too many questions.”
Lu Guang lets out a controlled breath. Ah, there’s the irritation he should have been channeling all morning.
“I’m trying to help you. Be more specific about your symptoms, Cheng Xiaoshi.”
“I’m dying, is that specific enough for you?”
Lu Guang’s irritation evaporates, the breath punched out of him. He’s kidding. Lu Guang knows it’s a joke, but it’s not one he likes.
Cheng Xiaoshi ignores whatever expression is on Lu Guang’s face, rolling his eyes back in fake agony. “I’m not gonna make it. Call Qiao Ling. Tell her to come quickly so I can update my will.”
It’s a stupid impulse, but Lu Guang can’t stand it. He needs to touch him. To feel Cheng Xiaoshi, alive, beneath his palms. Lu Guang sits on the edge of the couch, reaching forward towards Cheng Xiaoshi’s face. He opens his eyes suddenly, flinching away from Lu Guang’s touch.
“What are you doing?” he squeaks.
Lu Guang thinks fast. “I’m trying to check your temperature, idiot. We don’t have a thermometer.”
Cheng Xiaoshi blinks a few times, then gingerly leans forward, letting Lu Guang’s cool fingers brush his damp bangs back and rest on his forehead for a moment. Something inside Lu Guang settles at the contact. He’s warm, but not dangerously so. Lu Guang feels his own forehead for comparison with his other hand, and notes that the difference between them is minute.
“A slight fever,” he confirms after a few more seconds. His hand trails down Cheng Xiaoshi’s temple of its own accord before Lu Guang pulls it away reluctantly. Cheng Xiaoshi frowns like he’s disappointed.
Lu Guang stands up. “I’ll see if we have any medicine.”
He leaves the room, mostly to put space between them, and searches the kitchenette for medicine he knows he won’t find. Their kitchen was rarely ever stocked with things they actually needed. It took a long time for Lu Guang to finally begin purchasing useful things for their apartment, like medicine or first aid kits. Right now, all their cupboards are stuffed to the brim with cup noodles and other convenience food. Lu Guang sighs. It will be so long before they can afford nicer groceries.
He returns empty-handed. Cheng Xiaoshi doesn’t look surprised.
“I don’t know what you expected to find,” he says with a sad snort.
Lu Guang sighs. He needs to get back to the studio. He goes back to the kitchen once more and returns with a glass of water and a dish of plain wonton strips.
“Here. This should be simple enough to digest. Try to eat something and see if you can keep it down. And make sure to drink water. I’ll come check on you in a few hours.”
If leaving him was hard a few hours ago, now it’s taking a Herculean amount of strength to leave Cheng Xiaoshi behind. Lu Guang has to stand at the front counter of Time Photo Studio and pretend to be a normal person while his mind is still lingering on the feeling of Cheng Xiaoshi’s clammy skin beneath his hand. He could have gotten him a wet cloth to put on his forehead, at least. He debates going back up, but a customer comes in, and Lu Guang’s attention is needed elsewhere.
After they leave, Lu Guang tackles the darkroom, finally. Leaving these photos for another day could mess up the timeline somehow, and it’s imperative that he keeps things the same. The critical node he’s waiting to change hasn’t happened yet.
He tips a photo back and forth in the developer fluid, wondering if he’d crossed a line to reach for Cheng Xiaoshi the way he did earlier. Lu Guang tended to avoid physical contact in the past. It wasn’t something he was used to, before he met Cheng Xiaoshi. Lu Guang had kept firm physical boundaries between himself and others, holding himself at a distance.
But with Cheng Xiaoshi, there was no such thing as distance. If Cheng Xiaoshi wasn’t casually leaning into Lu Guang’s personal space, he was slinging an arm around his neck, grabbing his sleeve, nuzzling his face into Lu Guang’s shoulder to get his attention. Lu Guang couldn’t fathom that other people could be this physical, and it always confounded him. It didn’t take long in their friendship for Lu Guang to give up on pushing Cheng Xiaoshi away. It was clear he wasn’t ever going to stop invading Lu Guang’s space, and after a while it stopped feeling invasive, truthfully.
But Lu Guang had never been the type to initiate contact. That was one of the toughest parts of being in this timeline, if he was being honest.
---
Lu Guang had realized just how difficult restraining himself could be on his first day in this timeline.
He had only had a few hours to think about it. After declaring Cheng Xiaoshi dead, the police officers had dragged Lu Guang back to the station to question him. Despite Captain Xiao’s patience with him, they could barely get a word out of him, much less a helpful statement. They wanted specifics, any clues to help them with the serial killer case, but Lu Guang could barely breathe, staring at his shaking hands in the bright fluorescent light of the station. Lu Guang didn’t care about answers, he only cared about fixing things.
After a few hours, an officer drove him back to the studio. Lu Guang bounded upstairs, his mind already made up. He would save Cheng Xiaoshi if it was the last thing he did.
He sat down at their shared desk, a picture he took from one year ago lying before him. He could have waited longer to make the decision, but waiting was not going to bring Cheng Xiaoshi back. This might.
Clap!
Lu Guang blinked. The bleak shadows of their bedroom were replaced instantly with streaks of afternoon sunlight streaming in through the large windows of the living room. Lu Guang lowered the phone in his hands, looking at the photo of a small slip of paper resting on his knee—a fortune from a fortune cookie.
“Well?”
The sound of his voice, bright and curious, made Lu Guang flinch.
“What does it say, Lu Guang?”
Lu Guang looked up.
And there he was. Cheng Xiaoshi, staring at him, breathing and alive and wearing his pristine varsity jacket, un-stained by blood. He looked at Lu Guang expectantly, and Lu Guang threw himself at him.
Barely able to contain his emotions, Lu Guang crashed into Cheng Xiaoshi and pulled him into a breathtaking embrace, almost knocking the takeout from his hands.
“Lu Guang?” Cheng Xiaoshi had shouted in surprise, not knowing what else to say with the sudden attack of affection.
Lu Guang held tight to Cheng Xiaoshi, feeling his hair tickle his cheek and breathing in his scent. He’d been dead. Just hours before. The police were mid-investigation with a serial killer on the loose, and Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang had gotten too close. Cheng Xiaoshi was unexpectedly killed, dying as he lay in Lu Guang’s arms. He could still hear Cheng Xiaoshi’s stuttering gasps as the blood gurgled out of the wound in his chest. Lu Guang’s dry palms still felt slick with the sensation of warm blood.
Lu Guang was so grateful for another chance, another moment with Cheng Xiaoshi. He almost lost himself in the sensation of feeling him, warm and safe and alive in his arms.
But then the second rule of diving flashed through his head like lightning.
Change nothing.
This was his first lesson.
“What’s wrong, Lu Guang?” Cheng Xiaoshi asked him.
Lu Guang stepped away suddenly, still marveling at the sound of Cheng Xiaoshi’s voice and reeling for an excuse. He awkwardly returned to his chair and picked up the piece of paper he was taking a picture of when he’d reinhabited the past.
“My fortune,” he said stiffly. “It told me to hug a treasured friend.”
Cheng Xiaoshi beamed at his response. “Does it bring good luck?”
“Sure,” Lu Guang said, trying to recover when everything about Cheng Xiaoshi’s smile made him want to cry. It worked. He’d dove back in time and would find a way to fix everything. He’d find a way to make it up to Cheng Xiaoshi for losing him before.
But the damage to the timeline had already been done. The rest of the day Cheng Xiaoshi kept bringing it up.
“Don’t you think you should let your treasured friend handle that invoice for you?”
“C’mon, Lu Guang! Try the crane. I’m here with you to bring you good fortune after all.”
Lu Guang couldn’t escape it. One misstep, and he’d already altered the timeline. He’d never understood why following directions during a dive was so hard for Cheng Xiaoshi, but it was becoming clearer now.
It wasn’t until they were in their apartment that night, Qiao Ling meeting them to discuss a new client, that things shifted back to normal.
Qiao Ling stood in the living room, thumbing through posts on her phone, when Cheng Xiaoshi brought it up.
“Hey Qiao Ling, did you know that I’m Lu Guang’s treasured friend?” he asked, pointing to leftover fortune cookies. Lu Guang had trashed the piece of paper from before, not letting Cheng Xiaoshi read the message on it that contradicted his odd behavior. “I’ve been bringing him good fortune all day!” he said proudly.
Qiao Ling didn’t look from up from the phone she was scrolling through, which didn’t have its usual bunny case.
“Hey, Lu Guang,” she said, unimpressed, “could you tell your lucky charm that if he stopped spending money on mobile gatcha games and take-out he might be able to afford his monthly rent?”
“Hey, that’s my phone!” Cheng Xiaoshi shouted, pushing past Lu Guang to fight Qiao Ling for his cell phone. His reach was longer, so after a second of wrestling it was back in his hands. “How did you even unlock it?”
Qiao Ling sneered. “If you’re foolish enough to make your password your birthday then you deserved it. Look, I bet Lu Guang’s password is harder to crack. He’s younger than you but still wiser. Right, Lu Guang?”
Lu Guang blinked, suddenly remembering this conversation from the first time they had it. His password was also his birthday.
Cheng Xiaoshi burst into laughter, knowing Lu Guang’s password to be just as easy as his, and Lu Guang fumbled with his settings, slinking shamefully over to the other side of the room to change it out of their line of sight, like he had years ago. He silently thanked Qiao Ling for returning the conversation back to the normal flow of the timeline. He needed to remember not to slip up like he did today. There was a larger node he was aiming to change, and he couldn’t falter in the early stages.
He looked down at his phone’s password settings and gave himself a reminder.
“Are you going to tell me your new one?” Cheng Xiaoshi asked, throwing his arm over Lu Guang’s shoulder and leaning into his personal space.
There it was again. Lu Guang’s heartbeat tripled at the sensation of Cheng Xiaoshi so close to him. Lu Guang resisted the urge to pull Cheng Xiaoshi in closer, to revel in the sound of his breathing and the feeling of his pulse. If the old Lu Guang didn’t do those things, he couldn’t do them either.
If Lu Guang was a little slower in pushing him away, well. That was neither here nor there.
---
Lu Guang shakes his head at the memory as he pins the photos on the line to dry and leaves the darkroom. The sun is dipping behind the buildings across the street, so it must be close to closing time. Lu Guang looks at his watch. Any minute now, Qiao Ling will be bursting through the studio door to make Cheng Xiaoshi her magical soup, reviving him from his illness and returning the vitality to him. Lu Guang checks the register to make sure the till is correctly counted, glancing at the front door every few minutes.
After a while it begins to unnerve him. Was she this late last time? Lu Guang could swear she came around closing time. Lu Guang opens his phone to check for messages from her, swiping over to his Recent Calls menu to ask where she is.
Lu Guang’s blood congeals in his veins.
His last few Outgoing Calls are all to Cheng Xiaoshi, from days ago. Lu Guang hasn’t spoken with Qiao Ling today.
If he hasn’t called Qiao Ling, that means she doesn’t even know Cheng Xiaoshi is sick. If she doesn’t know he’s sick, she is unaware that she is supposed to urgently come to the studio. If she doesn’t come quickly, she won’t have time to make Cheng Xiaoshi her replicated recipe. If she doesn’t make the soup, the timeline—
Lu Guang puts his hands to his head, his fingers gripping the roots of his hair as he pulls in frustration.
This can’t be happening. Just one slip up, and everything could fall apart. What if eating Qiao Ling’s soup was a critical node? Lu Guang’s painstaking care of keeping this timeline the same will all be undone because he forgot to make a single phone call.
Lu Guang tries to ignore the tremor in his hands as he dials Qiao Ling’s number.
“He’s sick?” Qiao Ling asks him. “I’m surprised you didn’t tell me sooner. I could have taken care of him so you could keep running the studio.”
“I still opened today. Cheng Xiaoshi is upstairs.”
“You left him alone?” she asks. There’s a little too much emotion packed into the question for Lu Guang to overlook.
“Should I not have?”
Qiao Ling hesitates. “No, it’s—it’s fine…he’s just sensitive about being left alone. You know.”
You know.
She leaves the implication dangling before him. Lu Guang wants to slap himself. He did know. And now this is the second time he’s left Cheng Xiaoshi by himself when he was feeling vulnerable. Lu Guang burns with shame.
“He’s been asking for you,” Lu Guang tells her, feeling defeated. “Is there any chance you could stop by?”
“Probably not tonight,” she says. Lu Guang’s heart sinks even further. “There’s an event going on downtown. All the trains are behind schedule, and it will be impossible to hail a cab in the crowd. You said he was asking for me? He probably just wants—well, it doesn’t matter now. Tell him I can stop by tomorrow if he’s still feeling unwell, okay?”
Their phone call ends shortly afterwards. Lu Guang stares out the window of the studio, watching the sky become streaked in pinks and purples. It’s getting late. He supposes there’s nothing else to do but to face Cheng Xiaoshi. He doubts there’s any way to recover the timeline now. All he can hope for is that today’s missteps didn’t change any critical nodes for the future.
Lu Guang’s limbs feel heavy as he climbs the stairs, every changed minute weighing down his body as he goes to check on his friend. Cheng Xiaoshi is exactly where Lu Guang left him, though now he has an arm thrown over his eyes, trying to block out the rays of the setting sun as they beam in through the windows of the sunroom.
“Hey.” Lu Guang sits in the chair beside the couch.
Cheng Xiaoshi pulls his arm away from his pale face. His eyebrows draw up in concern. “Hey. Are you okay?”
Lu Guang can’t even fathom what his expression must look like right now. “Yeah, just tired.”
Even though he’s ill, Cheng Xiaoshi still manages to grin. “Looks like someone is finally realizing how much work I do in the studio. And you say I don’t pull my own weight.”
Lu Guang tries for a smile, though he doesn’t think he quite manages it. “You’re right. Today was hard without you.”
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Cheng Xiaoshi sits up gingerly. “If you’re sick too, you should say something.” His concern almost cheers Lu Guang up, but then he continues, “When Qiao Ling gets here, you can ask her for some—”
“Qiao Ling isn’t coming.”
He keeps his eyes trained on his lap, so he doesn’t have to see Cheng Xiaoshi’s disappointed expression.
Lu Guang is so tired. He wishes he could freeze this conversation, this whole day, and go nap for a thousand hours. The stress of it all is sucking the marrow from his bones. He wishes he could do today over again. He doesn’t know if he’d have the strength to do today over again. The longer Lu Guang exists in this timeline, the more he wonders if his mission is even possible. Will living in the past really allow Lu Guang to eventually change Cheng Xiaoshi’s future? Or is Cheng Xiaoshi existing on borrowed time? He thinks of today’s mistakes, piling up on one another, how one misstep can change the entire course of the future, and feels dizzy.
He jumps a bit when the feeling of cool glass brushes against his knuckles. Cheng Xiaoshi is pushing a glass of water into his hand.
“Drink.”
Cheng Xiaoshi’s stern command is so absolute that Lu Guang actually obeys, taking a sip of the water, which turns into a gulp, which turns to him finishing the glass.
Cheng Xiaoshi pushes the plate of wonton strips across the table to Lu Guang, who delicately takes one and crunches down on it.
“Better?” Cheng Xiaoshi asks.
Lu Guang nods. The world has righted itself a little, and the shining edges of his vision have receded back to normalcy. He looks down at the empty glass in his hand, the dish on the table. Recognition hits him.
“I left these out for you,” Lu Guang accuses.
Cheng Xiaoshi shrugs, the blanket slipping from his shoulder a little. “You looked like you needed them more.”
Lu Guang sighs. “You haven’t eaten anything today, have you?”
He shrugs again. “Not hungry.”
Lu Guang thinks of the last time he lived this day, and the way Cheng Xiaoshi devoured his meal. He doesn’t believe him.
“It’s just that…normally, when I’m sick—” Cheng Xiaoshi cuts himself off, like he doesn’t want to say it and make Lu Guang feel worse.
Lu Guang finishes his thought for him. “Qiao Ling normally cooks for you, doesn’t she?”
“It’s not just that. It’s stupid, really,” Cheng Xiaoshi says, rubbing the back of his head. “It’s a tradition she started when we were kids. She tries to recreate a dish my mom made for me when I was little.”
Even after years of knowing him, Lu Guang can’t remember Cheng Xiaoshi ever telling him this story himself. Should Lu Guang have thought to ask?
“What dish?” he asks carefully.
“Just soup,” he says, sounding shy. “I guess when I was little it was difficult getting me to eat nutritious foods. When I was sick my mom would make this incredible soup that had a ton of nutritional value, but somehow didn’t taste bad! It was like she covered up the taste of every awful vegetable somehow.” Cheng Xiaoshi looks down, fiddling with the edge of his quilt. “I never really questioned how she made all those healthy things taste so good. Special mom powers, I guess.”
Now Lu Guang remembers why he never asked for this story. He never liked this, hearing fond memories about Cheng Xiaoshi’s parents. He’d never tell him, but Lu Guang hates them. He hates how they abandoned their son and constantly villainizes them in his head whenever Cheng Xiaoshi brings them up.
He also hates them because he can’t stand the way Cheng Xiaoshi looks after talking about them. The sad, distant look in his eyes as his gaze trails back to the door, like part of him is always waiting for them to return through it.
Lu Guang stands suddenly, startling Cheng Xiaoshi. “What was in this soup?”
“Lu Guang?”
Lu Guang rifles through a drawer in their kitchenette, locating a piece of scrap paper. “What were the ingredients?”
Cheng Xiaoshi looks dumbstruck, still not entirely sure what Lu Guang’s intent is. “I’m not sure. Qiao Ling has been trying to recreate it for years.”
“Then tell me the ingredients you know to be correct. I’ll try to make it.”
“You don’t know how to cook!” Cheng Xiaoshi says incredulously. “And you definitely don’t know how to make soup.”
Lu Guang does. A year from now Cheng Xiaoshi will make him a bowl of noodles so lumpy and overcooked that Lu Guang will actually learn to cook just to spite him and make a better bowl. He knows enough to get by, not that Cheng Xiaoshi would know that right now.
“I’ve seen cooking shows,” he responds flippantly, grabbing his wallet from the table and putting it in his back pocket. “I’ll figure it out. Now, what ingredients can you remember?”
Cheng Xiaoshi rattles off a few ingredients absently, a look of disbelief on his face as Lu Guang jots them down on his paper. Lu Guang mentally tacks on a few other ingredients, remembering that they were in Qiao Ling’s soup when she made it for them originally. He wishes he could remember everything on her scribbled over recipe sheet, but this will have to do for now.
Lu Guang looks at the ingredients and nods. He makes it all the way to the stairs before stopping short. He turns to Cheng Xiaoshi, quilt still loosely wrapped around his shoulders and bewildered expression still plastered on his pale face.
“Will you be fine on your own while I go to the market?” he asks seriously.
Cheng Xiaoshi blinks at the question.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’ll be fine.”
Lu Guang nods. “Call if you need anything.”
---
The trip to the market is quick. Lu Guang grabs herbs, spices, and fresh vegetables— foods that until now would have been considered a luxury for him and Cheng Xiaoshi. If there’s a possibility it could go in a healing soup, Lu Guang adds it to his basket. He pays for it all with little concern for the few bills remaining in his wallet and hurries back to the studio.
Lu Guang paces down the road, lined with shadows now that the sun has almost fully set, with a paper bag in his arms full of ingredients he only kind of knows how to cook. He enters the studio and goes straight upstairs to Cheng Xiaoshi, who must have watched him walk up the road from the window, clammy handprint still on the glass behind him as he turns to look at Lu Guang.
Lu Guang wonders if his own expression matches the unsure one on Cheng Xiaoshi’s face.
“Well,” he starts uncomfortably. He looks down at the ingredients in the bag, which look much more intimidating now that he’s standing before Cheng Xiaoshi with them. He clears his throat delicately. “I’m going to get started.
“Let me help you—” Cheng Xiaoshi starts, trying to stand. He blinks rapidly and falls back to the couch, too lightheaded from not eating all day.
Lu Guang fills another glass of water and takes the added step to put it directly in Cheng Xiaoshi’s hand this time, the same way Cheng Xiaoshi did earlier with him. He doesn’t speak until he sees Cheng Xiaoshi take a tiny, tentative sip.
“You should be resting,” Lu Guang says. “Let me do this for you.”
The flush in cheeks probably has more to do with the illness than anything, but Cheng Xiaoshi’s expression is swirl of emotions as he relents, leaning back into the couch with a quiet “okay.”
Lu Guang returns to the kitchenette with his bag of spoils. He’d sat with Qiao Ling for the entire time that she made her healing soup the last time, so it shouldn’t be that hard to recreate a facsimile, right? Simmer some broth, chop a few vegetables, do something with herbs, how difficult could it be?
He puts their one large pot on top of their hot plate and dumps in a container’s worth of store-bought chicken bone broth. He turns on the hot plate. Step one complete.
“You should have the herbs in there already,” Lu Guang hears an annoying voice call from behind him.
He looks over his shoulder at a snuggled-up Cheng Xiaoshi, eyes closed and breathing too evenly for someone who was awake but two minutes ago.
Grumbling under his breath, Lu Guang turns off the heat and pulls out the tiny cutting board they have, ripping a few sprigs of each herb off their stems. He sets them on the board, knife hovering over them, but hesitates. Did Qiao Ling chop these?
“She normally puts them in whole.”
Lu Guang rolls his eyes and puts the knife down, reaching over the pot with his handful of herbs.
“In a bag.”
His hand stills.
“Made of cheesecloth.”
“Cheng Xiaoshi!”
Now Lu Guang is glaring over his shoulder. Cheng Xiaoshi smirks in his “sleep.”
It goes on like that for a while, with Lu Guang completing a handful of steps before a certain sleeping patient’s voice drifts from behind him with some unsolicited advice. Eventually Lu Guang gives up on pretenses and pulls a chair up to the kitchenette and glares at it pointedly until Cheng Xiaoshi happily takes a seat. Lu Guang only lets him stay after he finishes his whole glass of water.
But it’s…nice. Neither of them have ever been good cooks. And it won’t be months until they’ve built up a strong enough reputation from diving to earn them some real money for groceries. But it reminds Lu Guang of a time not that long ago, a time that hasn’t yet happened, where he and Cheng Xiaoshi would stand in their tiny kitchenette, shoulder to shoulder, as they argued about how much bean paste to put in their mapo tofu. Emotion still claws at his throat when he thinks of it, of a Cheng Xiaoshi older than the one before him (though not much more mature) whose days were unknowingly numbered. Lu Guang stops cooking twice to scrub his hands in the sink at the thought of it.
“It’s no wonder you never get sick, Lu Guang,” Cheng Xiaoshi says as he watches Lu Guang paw at the edge of the sink for their bar of soap. “Surgeons probably wash their hands less often than you.”
Lu Guang pauses, looking at the red, sudsy skin on his hands. He swallows and rinses them off.
The whole cooking process takes about an hour. Lu Guang wonders if he should let it cook longer, but with how famished Cheng Xiaoshi looks after a day of not eating, he’s not sure he wants to wait any longer.
“It’s probably done,” he says, trying to sound sure of himself as he turns off the heat. He looks over at his scrap sheet once more, wondering what ingredients from Qiao Ling’s paper he might have missed in preparing this dish. With Chinese yams and codonopsis root, it should at least help Cheng Xiaoshi’s digestion, thought Lu Guang can’t speak for the taste. He’s about to start rooting through their kitchenette for a clean bowl when a memory hits him. Qiao Ling’s blocky handwriting, a word with several question marks after it. She and Lu Guang giggling at Cheng Xiaoshi’s expense.
It probably won’t make a difference, but before Cheng Xiaoshi can look, Lu Guang grabs their jar of honey that they use for tea and tips it over the pot, dumping a small glob in.
He stirs the soup a few times for it to dissolve, then pulls out a bowl and ladles a large helping of soup into it before pushing it in front of Cheng Xiaoshi.
Cheng Xiaoshi looks at it, then back to Lu Guang, eyebrows pinched up.
“Aren’t you going to pour yourself some? We’re supposed to eat it together.”
Lu Guang could argue that this is Cheng Xiaoshi’s meal. He’s the sick one here. He’s the one who hasn’t eaten all day. But he can’t keep his composure with Cheng Xiaoshi’s brown eyes shining at him like that. Maybe it’s some sort of tradition he and Qiao Ling have. Lu Guang relents and pours a second, albeit less full, bowl.
“Happy?” he asks.
Judging by Cheng Xiaoshi’s smile, he must be. He finally begins eating his soup after that, so Lu Guang takes it as a victory.
He looks down at his own bowl. He has to admit, he is curious. He scoops up a spoonful, trying to get as many bits of vegetable as possible, and eats it. Warmth flows through his chest, same as before, with the earthy flavors of the vegetables complimenting the chicken broth. Even some of the more complex flavors of the traditional Chinese herbs are more muted, making them a little less bitter than last time. It’s not a perfect replication, but hopefully Cheng Xiaoshi enjoys the attempt all the same.
Lu Guang looks up from his bowl to ask Cheng Xiaoshi what he thinks, but the sight of him has Lu Guang stopping in his tracks.
He’s crying.
“Cheng Xiaoshi?” Lu Guang says, unable to disguise how worried he sounds.
Cheng Xiaoshi’s eyes squeeze shut as hot tears drip down his cheeks. He opens them slowly and tries to blink them away, rubbing his eyes with the palm of his hand as he takes another careful bite. But the second he swallows, more tears fall.
“How did you do this?” Cheng Xiaoshi asks, voice thick.
“You can stop if you don’t like it—” Lu Guang tries to tell him.
Cheng Xiaoshi sniffs a little. “It tastes like my mother’s.”
Lu Guang looks down at his bowl and freezes.
This wasn’t a part of the plan.
He was supposed to recreate Qiao Ling’s attempt at this soup, not actually try to make his mother’s recipe. It’s Cheng Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling’s tradition, and now Lu Guang has usurped it and through blind, hasty grocery shopping and an impulsive addition managed to find a combination of ingredients that satisfied Cheng Xiaoshi. Is this going to mess up the timeline? Has Lu Guang somehow tripped up in an even greater way than before, unable to stop himself from smashing this timeline into ruin before he can attempt to find the correct node that will save Cheng Xiaoshi in the future?
He can feel himself falling into another spiral, but when he looks at Cheng Xiaoshi, the ball of anxiety in his gut unravels minutely.
While Lu Guang has been wrestling with another panic attack, Cheng Xiaoshi’s face has broken into a radiant smile. Tears still shimmer at the edges of his eyes as he takes bite after reverent bite, but the joy on his face is enough to stop Lu Guang from losing all composure.
Lu Guang takes another sip of the soup. A soup that tastes like home to Cheng Xiaoshi. When he is sick and miserable, when he craves warmth and care, this is the dish that he longs for. A soup that reminds him of his mother’s love, no matter how distant a memory it is to him now. A dish that Qiao Ling has spent almost a decade trying to make, purely so she could help Cheng Xiaoshi feel precisely like this.
Because what even is the point of all of this if not to make Cheng Xiaoshi happy?
He prays that the timeline will favor him in this one moment, because when he looks at the joy on Cheng Xiaoshi’s face, Lu Guang can’t find any regret left in him.
Cheng Xiaoshi looks to Lu Guang and clears his throat a little.
“You better eat your soup before it gets cold. If you’re not careful, I might eat your bowl too.”
Lu Guang wraps a hand around his bowl protectively, and Cheng Xiaoshi’s laughter chases away all his doubt.
---
“Aghh!! I can’t believe you spilled broth all over it! Lu Guang, I’ve not known you to be so clumsy.”
Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang both look at the soaked sheet of paper, the ink already starting to blot.
“You don’t happen to remember the quantities of all the ingredients you used, do you?” Cheng Xiaoshi asks Lu Guang.
Lu Guang looks at the paper forlornly. “I barely remember what I bought. I was picking through the vegetable section at the market at random.”
There’s barely enough soup in the pot for another full bowl (Cheng Xiaoshi devoured two of them, though Lu Guang forced him to eat slowly), and most of the vegetables had already been eaten, so there isn’t much evidence left for them to pick through.
While the universe seemed to favor Lu Guang in giving him such a convenient out, Lu Guang can’t help but pity Cheng Xiaoshi. He wonders if their destroyed ingredient list will fill him with heartbreak, now that his mother’s healing soup recipe has been washed away.
But Cheng Xiaoshi picks up the remains of the list, smiling good naturedly.
“Ah, it’s alright. I’m sure Qiao Ling still wants to try and recreate the recipe anyway. It would make her sad to discover that you’re such a cooking prodigy on your first try.” He balls up the wet paper and throws it away. “Let’s keep today between us, alright?”
“Are you sure?” Lu Guang asks.
Cheng Xiaoshi nods, still looking happier than he’s been all day. Lu Guang’s heartbeat quickens every time he looks at him. It’s hard to believe the change in Cheng Xiaoshi after just one meal. It could just be that after a full day of not eating, his revitalization has more to do with a full stomach than anything. Or perhaps the ingredients in the soup truly are medicinal. But color has returned to Cheng Xiaoshi’s cheeks once more, and he’s moving with an ease that he hasn’t had since yesterday.
Lu Guang gathers their bowls, washing them in the sink and leaving them on a dishtowel to dry. He sees Cheng Xiaoshi return to the couch instead of going upstairs.
“You should probably go to bed,” Lu Guang tells him, prioritizing responsibility.
“I’ve been sleeping all day!” Cheng Xiaoshi responds indignantly. “Come watch something with me.”
Lu Guang weighs the options of arguing with Cheng Xiaoshi versus doing what he wants. When he looks at Cheng Xiaoshi’s pouting expression, Lu Guang finds himself giving in, yet again. He tells himself it’s only because Cheng Xiaoshi is sick.
“Fine.”
Lu Guang takes out his laptop and pulls up a movie from the other day that they didn’t finish watching. As he’s adjusting the volume on his speakers, Cheng Xiaoshi speaks.
“Hey, Lu Guang?”
Lu Guang turns to face him. “Hm?”
“Thank you.” Cheng Xiaoshi looks at his lap shyly. “For today.”
The earnest admission stops Lu Guang short.
Every moment from today has been one continuous misstep after another. The stress, the anguish, the panic from it all was enough to take years off Lu Guang’s life. Lu Guang has known from the start that his mission to save Cheng Xiaoshi would be difficult, but days like today truly made him question if saving Cheng Xiaoshi was even possible. Lu Guang knows what the future looks like, but he’s more unsure of it than he’s ever been. Keeping the timeline the same long enough to find the critical node that will save Cheng Xiaoshi’s life might be a dream so farfetched that it might not even be worth attempting.
But Lu Guang thinks of the tear-streaked smile after Cheng Xiaoshi took that first bite.
Spending every waking moment agonizing over his next step won’t get him anywhere. Instead, Lu Guang folds up that smile and tucks it into a corner of his mind for safekeeping.
Cheng Xiaoshi thanked him for today.
Maybe that is enough.
Lu Guang offers Cheng Xiaoshi a nod, unable to help how bashful he feels as well. If he opened his mouth to respond, he worries that something far more revealing might tumble out of him. Something about promising to always care for him, to always keep him safe. He settles on a small dip of his chin and hopes it conveys what words can’t.
It only takes a moment longer to set up the movie. Afterwards, Lu Guang sits on his side of the couch. Cheng Xiaoshi sidles up next to him, so close the quilt he’s wrapped in presses into Lu Guang’s side.
Lu Guang pointedly does not look into his eyes when he asks, “Are you feeling well, now?”
“Yes,” Cheng Xiaoshi replies happily.
“And you’re not going to throw up on me?”
“Of course not!”
Lu Guang nods to himself. Then he leans forward to press ‘play.’
He does not tell Cheng Xiaoshi to move. Timeline be damned.

netflix three body problem is ok. I ended up staying up late watching it to the end, so i can't say that it's badly made or anything. it's a perfectly fine bit of television, if you like sci fi in general then you'll probably get along with it.
the decision to change the setting from china to britain is of course artistically bankrupt. It's 2024, surely western audiences can handle a tv series set in china, come on. And changing everything from this big co-operative international group of the best people in their fields to five friends who know each other already carrying all the plots was weak.
Spoilers below the cut.
the weakest part as an adaptation is the cultural revolution stuff. in the book there was just more of it, this huge buildup of stress and betrayals that make it plausible for the real heart of the novel: Ye Wenjie's decision to betray humanity to the trisolarans. The tv show just didn't manage to sell that moment, because there wasn't enough time given to allow enough buildup. I think these flashbacks needed to have gone on a lot further into the series, with more time given to the piling-up of events on her shoulders until it becomes convincing that she would actually do what she did (imo the rest of her actions from that point are driven by a desire to avoid thinking about the obvious mistake she's made -- if she were to stop helping the trisolarans then that would mean admitting to herself that she's unjustifably doomed humanity).
i think they also removed the dark forest hints that should have peen in one of her conversations with one of the protagonists, the "cosmic sociology" stuff. Are they feeling the need to dumb it down or something? I dunno.
Anyway. It's good enough that i'll watch the second season. It's just not as good as the adaptation which exists in my head.

Ok ok time to talk about my tma secret life au (I’ve been working on this with Shrub ( @moonyforests ) so some of the ideas are theirs)
Also tma spoilers (a lil for the start of season 5) ahead so beware
The idea behind this is that the secret life server is a domain in the eyepocalypse (we’re thinking probably a web one because of their tasks but maybe spiral idk)
The secret keeper is watching in place of the giant eye(s) in the sky so the people in the server are less suspicious of what’s going on
The tasks all correspond to an entity (or multiple, or partially one and a lot of another, Robert Smirke was wrong guys the entities overlap so much). For example let’s take Gem’s session one task ‘convince someone to take a leap of faith and make sure they take no damage’. This is so so so Vast I literally cannot iterate enough how Vast this is. We also have BigB’s session one task, ‘Dig a big hole. All the way down. At least 3x3. Make it your base if you want’. Ignoring the weirdness of the phrasing for a second (I’ll return your attention to BigB later in this very long post), this is quite obviously Buried. However some tasks such as Grian’s ‘make 3 bad jokes and get NO laughs’ doesn’t particularly seem to be any of them. We can assign it one at a stretch (perhaps lonely) but it isn’t obvious.
This domain is slightly odd since we have several avatars in it (who the domain doesn’t belong to). We can probably say that the secret keeper is the avatar of this domain, since it’s responsible for the tasks, but who knows?
Let’s talk about BigB. If you’ve seen some of my previous posts you probably know I’m already headcanoning him as the distortion. It just makes so much sense. The gaslighting, the weird corri-door and just everything he’s doing is very very distortion. I see him very much as an equivalent to Michael in this (and Grian as Helen to an extent). I’m putting Grian as the distortion as well because the events are just too perfect.
1. Grian goes into BigB’s underground hotel/corridors/confusing place
2. Grian goes and moves people’s doors under their noses, drawing the line from Lizzie ‘I know this doesn’t make sense to you, but this door was not here a second ago’
3. Grian goes and builds the most Spiral-esque staircase EVER
As I said, the events are just too perfect
But yes these are the ideas I (and Shrub) have so far! Feel free to add anything if you think of stuff (it would be awesome if someone who knows some of the other guys better than me headcanons what they are/do in this au)
I’m currently drawing more art of distortion!BigB and Grian so expect that in a bit!

Cyberchase - The "What's Hacker's Secret?" content (part 2)
Alright, let's try this again. Here is the second part of the content that was promoting the "Transformatron" arc. We can see an issue of Cyberspace News here. The main story is Buzz and Delete being interviewed about Hacker's upcoming plans. They know nothing. We knew this already.
Tumblr media
I'm going to transcribe the interview in full.
What's Hacker's Secret? Sam Vander Rom's EXCLUSIVE Interview with Buzz & Delete
Sam: Buzz and Delete, you're the Hacker's henchmen. His simpering sidekicks. How come you're talking to me?
Delete: Well, the boss isn't talking to us much these days. We're lonely.
Buzz: Yeah, he's always shut up in his secret lab. ays we can't come in. That we'll ruin everything.
Sam: Maybe you guys should talk to that Cybertv talk show host Dr. Bill. He's good at helping people.
Delete: We should do that, Buzzy!
Buzz: Yeah, maybe we should, Dee-dee.
Sam: So what do you think Hacker's doing in his secret lab?
Delete: I think maybe he's making something.
Sam: Like what?
Buzz: Maybe a machine. He's always hammering and it sounds like he's putting stuff together.
Sam: Interesting. A new Hacker contraption.
Delete: Remember, Buzzy, how he got so excited when he found all those tiny bits of paper? He made me go get some tape. Then he taped them all together.
Buzz: Yeah, that's right, Dee-dee. The paper had a picture of a big machine. Like they were plans or something.
Sam: What does this new machine do?
Delete: Maybe it makes donuts, Buzzy! You'd like that.
Buzz: I dunno. I think it's more important-like. The boss is a pretty smart borg. I bet it'll do something no one's seen before.
Delete: We better not say anymore. The boss might get mad!
Sam: You heard it here first, folks. The Hacker's up to no good! This reporter fears we'll see a new Hack Attack very soon! The interview with Buzz and Delete ends
I think The Hacker would have been okay with this interview. Buzz and Delete really just served to hype up his latest invention, while giving no useful information about how to stop it.
Anyway, I'll transcribe Erica Ram's piece about Slider and his missing dad.
Tumblr media
Personal & Up Close by Erica Ram
Heartbreak Kid
There is no sadder story in Cyberspace than the tale of a teenborg from Radopolis named Slider. His father, the brilliant and talented Coop, was forced to flee his home years ago after a disagreement with who else - that old meanie Hacker. Coop hasn't been seen or heard from since, but we have it on good authority that young Slider is still looking for his dad. "If anyone can find him, it's Slider," said our source. When reached at his garage for comment, Slider said, "I'll find my dad some day, and that's a promise!" Good luck, Slider! We're all rooting for you!
Erica Ram's article ends
I would have used a stronger term than "meanie", given that The Hacker forced Coop to abandon his son. I'm still surprised that Cyberchase went that hard back then.
Anyway, I figure I should transcribe the other articles as well as the in-universe advertisements.
Tumblr media
Penguin Hockey Hoopla
By Olli
Penguin hockey season is about to begin! Hockey hopefuls have been lining up at try-outs all across Cyberia. In Penguia, Coach Bluewing says he's happy to have Flash back for another season. "She's got the best aim in Cyberspace," he said. A bright young fan named Fluff said he wanted to play penguin hockey because "it's the best sport ever!"
The hockey article ends
Tumblr media
Health Watch for Borgs & Bots By Dr. Marbles
Borgs & bots are warned that there have been many reports of late about magnetite. This mineral is very dangerous and can have strange and unpredictable effects. Everyone gets different glitches. Some borgs and bots lose their memory. Others break out in spots like chicken pox. I have even heard it can make you grow old or give you big feet. Everyone is urged to proceed with caution around magnetite.
The Health Watch article ends
Spoilers, magnetite exposure caused Coop to age into an old man, though he is able to be put back to normal with the cure. I really need to do a separate post about Coop's long exile. Magnetite causes Slider's feet to grow to a massive size, which is great for The Hacker, as it stops Slider from being able to lift his foot to kick his ass.
I'll transcribe the four in-universe ads at the bottom.
Tumblr media
Ad #1
Special Cryoxide Sale Today!
Buy a case, get 1 can free!
Call Mr. Cryoxide
Ad #2
Ms. Fileshare is pleased to announce that Chef Digit Le Boid will be at the Cybrary tomorrow to sign copies of his new cookbook, Chef Digit Le Boid's Party Planner.
Coming soon
Manny the Medium reads from his new book Mysteries of the Manatee.
Ad #3
Aquari-Yum Picnic
All are welcome to the Prince's Picnic in Aquari-Yum next Saturday. It will take place on Hot Dog Hill. Cybersquad superstars Matt, Jackie and Inez are expected to attend, said Stringie, close friend to the Crab Prince.
Ad #4
Wanted: 1 bunny
I will love him and keep him and call him George.
Signed, Delete.
And that's all for the ads.
I like what they did here. It covers all of the important points for the series of episodes in this arc, and it doesn't spoil anything. We just get hints.
We're going back to Penguia for hockey tryouts
The Hacker is building some grand machine in his secret lab
Buzz and Delete are going to be on Dr. Bill due to The Hacker not having any time for them
Cryoxide is going to factor in again
We're heading back to Aquari-yum to meet the Crab Prince
The magnetite is going to come back in style
We're going to meet Slider's missing dad

Gale Reviews: ML Season 5 episode 14 Derision
Spoilers Below
-WHY ARE THEY SO CUTE!?
-Umm Marinette? You okay?
-Have some cereal with your milk.
-Yea something is up with Marinette.
-Marinette's bike is cool.
-Okay adrinette hand holding is cute. But something seems wrong here
-Okay so she reacted seeing an image of Kim... okay weird.
-Okay ... Marinette is having a panic attack. That feels a bit too real
-Bugs! Locker full of bugs. But what does it have to do with...
-Marinette freaked out hard. and Kim says thats her normal reaction to pranks... Kim? What the fuck?! What did you do?
-Of COURSE the akuma shows up now
-"Panic" Oh damn thats a good name for an akuma. But I know Marinette would never get akumatized (especially at this point) But I really want some art interpretations of that form
-So Marinette is having a flashback while Monarch be trying to work on akumatization... How does that work?
-Okay so Marinette had a crush on Kim in 8th grade... Wow someone somewhere owes Lunian some money.
-Marinette with her hair down! Not a drill. Flashbacks matter
-Marinette of 8th grade doesnt want to go to school... Oh wow it feels like origins. Does Sabine KNOW how bad it is? Why not just let her change schools?
-Chloé bullied Marinette, but that was already known...
-JEEZ! Bugs in the locker. Seriously!? Where did chloe make sabrina get those
-And Damacles is a f***ing asshole
-Oh Jeez, Mendeleiev still a harsh b****
-Oh come on! Someone give Marinette a break
-Wait... Kim just thought these were NORMAL Reactions to pranks. He thought these were Okay?!
-Okay wow, yea Mendeleiev and Damocles are garbage. Sure hope no one thought they were better teachers than Ms.Bustier. That would sure suck.
-Chloé is really no different then how she has been all season or season 1
-Juleka looks ready to throw hands. So I really cant hate any of the other students in the class, they seem scared of Chloé, and honestly seeing what I saw. I dont blame them.
-Mylene out right said "Chloé's mom leaving is no excuse. My mom left and I aint a bitch." Go off Queen
-At least Juleka, Rose and Mylene talked to Marinette and were kind
-Kim actually offered his swim trunks to her. Well that is kind of sweet in a himbo way.
-Chloé really just decided to hate on Marinette.
-Damn Socqueline! You defend Marinette. Maybe thats why Marinette wears her hair like that.
-So Socqueline is a year older confirmed. And it does explain the deeper lore about her knowing her mom.
-Tonto. Hehehehehehe
-For a change? So the implication is that Marinette has crushes before. Makes sense. Marinette at this point seems like the type to develop crushes on anyone nice to her.
-Kim doesnt really get when Pranks are pranks and Pranks are... well TOO far. OMG he is the "Its just a prank Bro" type
-Sabrina was watching.... oh this can only end poorly
-Oh... oh no. No no no no no no no.
-Kim you are really an idiot. And not in the endearing himbo way.
-Marinette didnt have a plan back then... Oh! This is gonna result in a trauma where she needs to... Oh wow this is gonna be traumatic af.
-Socqueline is like a big sister to her. Poor thing already can see this going poorly
-This looks like an adorable time. The marikim looks adorable, yet all I can think about is how Chloe will ruin it.
-Oh no, Kim. Please dont do this.
-IT HAD BUGS IN IT! KIM! KIM!!! IN WHAT WORLD DID YOU THINK THIS WAS AN OKAY PRANK?! THAT WAS 8 TYPES OF FUCKED UP. I DONT CARE HOW CONVINCING CHLOÉ IS. YOU ABSOLUTE GARBAGE MEATHEAD!!
-Welp... Chloé has done some f***ed up things. But Wow. This really is her at her worst. Like damn. That is just... And here I thought Lila was bad.
-So Astruc, you really needed to drive the point home on why you hate chloé. You REALLY drove it home. But really
-Socqueline Out here for the save! At the very least saving Marinette from ABSOLUTE eternal shame. Put some respect on this character that only appeared this season.
-Kim REALLY doesnt get how f***ed that was. Its a sad day when a Himbo is more dumb than kind. That just make him an idiot.
-Marinette needs a hug.
-So this explains everything about Why Marinette knows absolutely everything about adrien early on. Well except for the fact he is chat noir. But yea. It was actually TRAUMA!
-"And that he is not friends with Chloé." Yea Adrien, buddy. You might want to completely burn that bridge now. Side note, this completely contextualizes Origins and why Marinette assumed the worst about Adrien off the bat. Damn. This was deep. A little exposition heavy... but deep
-And Chloé gets Socqueline because she broke her phone. Well Damocles. You are officially s*** in my eyes. Even Darker owl seems less slay to me. YOU RUINED DARKOWL FOR ME YOU BASTARD
-She got suspended for two weeks. That sucks
-Wow, so was that flashback instant? Or was Monarch just patiently watching that flashback ENGROSSED by it?
-She broke free by working through the source of her trauma in a matter of seconds... Okay.
-Oh damn! Ondine and Adrien look ready to throw hands at Kim. And Justifiably so.
-Kim... You done goofed. You really are an idiot and My opinion of you is trash.
-Adrien going full arthur anger meme. PUNCH HIM ADRIEN. PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE
-Dude doesnt even swim with his goggles.
-Monarch really said "If I gotta settle, I can at least spin it to make it sound better than it is."
-Dark Humor, Hehe instead of Dark cupid. Clever. Cause his sense of humor is dark. Also CHAT NOIR HAS A REASON TO PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE.
-Its twisted that he gets his old power
-Also... was he wearing that in the pool? That thing is waterproof? Neat.
-I like the updated costume. But I hate kim right now
-Adrien is ready to throw hands.
-Chat noir wants to beat Kim's ass today. SLAY KITTY SLAY
-YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Chat noir giving Dark Humor the Two Piece No Biscuit.
-He gonna cataclysm him! oh sh*t. Chat noir really felt regret about accidentally cataclysming Monarch, but now ready to erase kim. Yea I completely understand. Valid.
-Ladybug understably needed to stop him... But that caused him to get hit with the goofy arrow. Damn
-Ladybug had to detransform and retransform quick. Tikki really sped ate her cookie today.
-She got jokes
-And Ladybug's plan faked him out and now he got a toilet on his head
-Ladybug may also be using this as a chance to work stuff out.
-The ladynoir is cute. But Chat noir was still 100% justified in his beating of dark humor... Except the cataclysm. But I get why he was ready to use it.
-Well at least Kim is owning up to his s***. He is still an idiot. But He is a himbo. But yea, still a dick move early on Kim. Path to redemption Kim. (still forgave him too quickly.) But Ondine will beat his ass if he doesnt stick to it.
-This Adrinette is adorable and sweet and understanding.
-Trauma is still there. Guess she isnt completely over it, which is understandable. It will take some time (or like 3 episodes)
-Adrien went to chloé. Oh damn. You go boy
-Yea, this chloé is season 4-5 chloé alright. Nothing surprising here. She is just vile
-Sabrina looked annoyed at that speech. (Sabrina will remember that)
-Adrien is officially done. He ended it there officially. Friendship over.
_____________________________________________________________
So I have a LOT of thoughts on this.
For one, Every adult in miraculous is an idiot. Sabine, its good you has Socqueline there to help... but that doesnt really mean s***. This is where you work with the school to have her change classes, or even schools. 3 years of that treatment is enough.
Also, Damocles. You gutless coward. Even if it did cost you your job. The fact you let yourself get controlled to let your STUDENTS suffer is gross.
And Kim... Kim you are an idiot. The fact that you didnt even think that a prank like that was too far?! Adrien was more than justified in a cataclysm. But you did apologize and promised to THINK about the consequences. Plus you are a kid. I can forgive. But THIN ICE MY GUY
Chloé, yea season 2 and Season 3 chloé might as well be a completely different character than this chloé. Zoe appeared after harnessing any decency Chloé has left. But yea, I dont care for this chloé. Not gonna defend this chloé.
So this does explain a LOT about Marinette's more cautious personality. But it also doesnt make sense in a way that Marinette didnt really think things through before. Because if thats the case... then the thing that made her a good ladybug was because of a crippling trauma?! I feel like this maybe should have fleshed out younger marinette more.
Socqueline really was like an older sister to Marinette, but sadly it feels like her inclusion without mention before makes this feel like this traumatic event wasnt planned from the get go as the reason Marinette is how she is. Also after what happened to Socqueline. How could Tom and Sabine allow Marinette to go to that school again?! Seriously. Especially after KNOWING Chloé would be in Marinette's class in origins.
Side note, Adrien was 100% perfect this episode. Loved him. Ondine too. I do wish Civilian adrien did get ONE punch on Kim tho. Just one.
Chat noir laying a beating though was great.
Right, so even though I enjoyed the episode to an extent... I cant say it leaves the show in a better place. If anything, I think it leaves things much worse off.
6/10
3 points for the adrinette moments
2 points for Chat noir laying a beating on Kim
1 point because Kim apologized.
Overall I dont like the direction of things this implies

Ghosts
Boo!!! Family fluffy fic in time for spooky season!! Set after S2E2 Ghost Ship. A little hurt/comfort in there but not scary, plus lots of siblingly banter, shenanigans and cuddles!!
Authors note: I haven't actually seen more than 5 minutes of any of the redacted for spoilers movies, but I googled it which totally counts.
Oh and you might recognise some of this from wip wednesday but there's alot more now. This was originally supposed to be short, like under 1000 words short but nope!! I had much fun writing!!
@idontknowreallywhy *steals your popcorn*
---------
John really hoped that Scott and Kayo had forgotten about his and Alan’s whole ‘maybe, possibly, just a tiny bit absolutely terrified of ghosts,’ slip up on the comms.
He really thought they had. Until the next family movie night.
To set the scene: it was a cool, pleasant evening on Tracy Island. John was down from Five and the fresh breeze was a welcome change from recycled air. All the family was piled onto couches, well except for Grandma and Brains who were in his lab making enthusiastic upgrades to the already far too overpowered oven.
Gordon and Virgil were squabbling over whether sweet or salty popcorn was the better flavour, while eating from a bowl mixed of both, like they did every time. Gordon preferred salty, likening it to the unfortunate comparison of celery crunch bars despite the two bearing little resemblance. Virgil vehemently argued for sweet ever since he had discovered coffee caramel popcorn.
Scott attempted to mediate without getting kicked by Virgil’s feet on his lap as the family tank lunged to get the fish in a headlock. Alan egged all parties on. Kayo delicately plucked the popcorn bowl from amid the fray and joined John where he watched from the relative safety of the other sofa.
He took a handful of kernels from Kayo, shaking his head at the antics of the others. Every time. The same argument played out, when the two of them actually preferred both flavours mixed in the same bowl. Why, John didn't know. He tolerated it for the free pre-movie entertainment though.
Finally, everyone got settled. Scott sat between two pouting brothers who before the end of the movie would be snuggled up together, half falling asleep. Alan fetched frozen peas for what John suspected was more likely for Virgil’s bruised pride than injury from Gordon’s lumpy elbows, while Gordon was consoled over the indignity of being sat on at one point by the heavy lifter. Then more popcorn for reparations, when they noticed the missing bowl and Kayo’s smug expression.
John stretched out on the couch, while the others were crowded on the next one. Kayo was perched above him, in reach of their bowl of popcorn. They all would move about through the movie, because no one round here could sit still for a whole hour-and-a-half minimum, and the hugs had to be shared around.
“So, what are we watching?” John asked, completely in ignorance of the forthcoming answers.
“Nemo! Or Moana! Blue Planet!” Gordon screeched, because he always quick to suggest marine themed ones at every turn in hopes someone would fall for it.
“It’s not even his turn,” Alan grumbled. “What about something with zombies? Not more boring fish.”
Gordon gasped, “An affront upon my friends! The kraken will have you for that!”
John rolled his eyes at the typical tinies dramatics.
“Alan, you picked last time,” Virgil said, totally reasonably except for his stage whisper to Gordon of, “Get him, Squid!”
Aaand they were back in kahoots. Not even a record for the timing.
Alan appealed to Scott to protect him with big, blue puppy eyes, and got away with it because he was still the baby of the family. Despite how he complained about ‘smothering older brothers,’ he was very happy to use the privilege when it suited him.
Long suffereringly, Scott said, “Gords, you can’t drag Alan down to the watery depths, you’d be bored without your partner in crime.”
John watched on. Very well behavedly, without starting any fights or causing any trouble, he’d like to add. Because he was the sensible, responsible one of this bunch.
“Eos,” John asked his comm, “Who’s turn is it to choose what we watch?”
Then he added, “You did say you wanted to watch the next Star Trek, like we talked about.” He didn't quite wink at her, but only because that wouldn't have been very subtle.
“It’s your turn to choose, of course, John,” Eos replied, loud enough everyone would hear, “Star Trek would be, as you put it, awesome.”
John struggled to keep a straight face. “Then Star Trek it is,” he said with all the authoritative gravitas of Thunderbird Five.
Scott face palmed.
John shrugged. “Worth a try.”
Everyone’s voices rose to argue with him.
“Really, Eos?” Virgil questioned the AI, staring foolishly at the ceiling.
Gordon protested,“We just had Star thingy, the week before Alan’s Zombie Apocalyspe Twenty or whatever.”
“Hey!” Alan came to defend the merits of Zombie Apocalyspe Twenty or whatever.
Scott looked betrayed by his supposedly second eldest brother. “Are you an adult or are you eight?”
John huffed, “I totally could have pulled this off when I was eight.”
“Awww, clever ickle Johnny,” Gordon heckled.
“Don’t call me Johnny, plankton.” The fish would soon be fish food if he kept trying it.
“Did I upset itty bitty baby Johnny?”
“Joooohnyyyy,” Alan joined in, because he wanted to be causing trouble.
John was one more mangled rendition of his name from tackling them both, gravity be damned.
“How many times do we have to say that using Eos to back up your claims does not make them any more valid when she can’t be objective about it?” Scott interjected, in an attempt from stopped things from getting out of hand.
“Few hundred more at least.” John grinned. He hadn't forgotten certain remarks though.
General groans followed all round. And another face palm. A few more grey hairs and a red forehead for Scott was in order.
“This time happens to be my choice,” Kayo stated. Out of the blue and right on target.
In the shadow of those innocuous words, John missed the mischievous look his sister and eldest brother shared. How the very atmosphere changed.
In synch, they burst out together, “Ghost Busters!”
They sung it. Loudly. Complete with catchy jingle.
Alan and John looked at each other in horror.
Ghosts.
“I’m not scared,” Alan burst out.
John settled back and crossed his arms. They’d have to try harder to get him.
Harder than the big cartoon ghost logo that had appeared, hovering unnaturally in the middle of the room. Projected from the holo tv, of course. Like you normally watched movies with. Nothing spooky going on there.
Far too often people underestimated Scott’s ability to be a pain in the ass of a brother, and Kayo’s capacity for mischief.
John was never going to make that mistake.
He made it through the introduction. This was going to be fine. The movie was positively ancient, the first of the franchise coming out way back in the 1900s. He looked it up on his tablet before Scott made him put it away because it was family movie time, and the movie was supposedly far more of the comedy genre than horror.
John still wrapped himself up in one of the many blankets they kept by the couches, as if crocheted orange stitches could protect him from ghostly chills. Actually, scratch that, it was because he was cold, nothing supernatural about it.
The first ghost came up on screen. John absolutely didn't shrink back from it. He heard Alan’s gasp as he scrabbled for his own blanket.
The special effects were archaic. Definitely not realistic enough to be scary, John told himself. Nope, not scary at all.
Ghosts weren’t real, after all.
No reason to be scared.
Something went bang and John yelped in alarm. He cast around for threats. Then landed on Virgil, picking up the empty popcorn bowl from the floor.
He and Gordon had already migrated to sit on the rug together and yet somehow still managed to make a clatter.
Innocent brown eyes met John’s. They widened, like those of some sweet animal that could do no wrong.
“Whoops,” Virgil said, “Sorry about that.”
Appearances could be deceiving.
The family peacekeeper was as much a trouble maker as any of them.
John glared at him.
Virgil raised a brow then cheerfully turned back to the movie.
To the ghosts. The glowing, comedically ridiculous pieces of animated filmic trickery that his brain still insisted were worthy of terror.
John missed a few vital parts of the sequence of events whilst trying not to look at the projection. Then it exploded. Exploding ghosts.
Ugh, all that ooze. John shuddered at the phantom sensation of it landing on him as it splattered everywhere.
The movie continued. More ghosts. More exploded ghosts.
Sudden noises from outside, normal noises of their island wildlife, made John jump. What had been a pleasant breeze now raised goosebumps where it trailed its icy fingers across his skin.
He glanced towards Alan to see how he was handling it. John had looked out for his little brother on the mission with the threats of an actual ghost ship floating in the dead of space, and he’d make sure he was okay in the safety of their loungeroom too.
Alan had his shoulders hunched up to his ears, only his eyes and a few strands of bright blonde hair visible beneath the blanket.
This situation called for being the bigger brother. John crossed the few steps to the other couch and sat down next to Alan. If he happened to also be closer to Scott, things just turned out like that.
Then the smotherhen paused the movie.
“If you,” Scott glanced at Alan and then him for that, “Really don’t want to watch the movie, I’m sure Kayo would be alright with picking something else.”
Alan shrugged, “I mean it’s not zombies but it is kinda funny. Let’s go for it.”
Alan did also like watching horror movies, where scaring yourself silly appeared to be the entire point.
John, not so much. It was the jumpscares. And the high percentage of plot important ghost-infested scenes. Though at least the contents of a book couldn't suddenly pop up and scream in your face. Not unless a bored Gordon got his hands on it, but John was not going to give him any ideas on that front.
John had had enough. So he did what he still always did when the world was too scary, whether or not he admitted to it. Go to Scott.
He threw away his pride and tucked himself into Scott’s side. Not matter how small the fear, big brother hugs made it better.
He waved his okay for the movie to be unpaused, it wasn't scaring him badly enough he wanted to stop it all together plus he was enjoying family movie night. But that was no reason not to spend the rest of it right here.
Scott’s arm went around John, pulling up the blanket and cuddling him closer. John curled up small, his legs beneath him, arms under the blanket and hugging Scott, resting his head on Scott’s chest.
He might’ve hidden his face behind Scott’s shoulder any time anything ghostly came up. So what, everyone was allowed one illogical fear.
In the middle of the climax of the movie, where either the ghosts would be busted or the ghost busters, Alan leapt up and ran to the other sofa.
He hugged a very surprised Kayo around the middle and declared, “You’ve got to protect me. You’re my only hope, Kayo!”
John felt the vibrations of laughter as Scott retorted, “What’s that say about me?”
Alan looked their big brother up and down. “Kayo would be better at kicking ghost ass.”
Which he was probably correct about.
Kayo sported a proud grin, over her surprise and settling into her role of big sister, which she’d learnt from the rest of them as she let them in as her family. “You’re damn right I would be.”
She pulled Alan into her arms and rested her chin on his head. Alan happily snuggled closer.
“Language, the both of you,” Scott half-heartedly reprimanded,
Alan’s eyes lit up, “But last week I heard you call that guy who deliberately ignored the safety protocols a ‘fu—”
“Alan!” Scott cut their youngest off sharply.
The cheshire cat smile on Alan’s face only grew. “Bet grandma would have something to say about that, wouldn't she? And the baking dish from yesterday’s lasagne still needs scrubbing, doesn't it?”
Scott glared at him, a hint of a pout at being called out for hypocrisy.
Alan held out a hand, wriggling his fingers.
Scott grumbled grumpily and leant across to hand over the last of his own popcorn.
Alan smiled sweetly, employing those not so innocent baby blues. “Thanks Scotty.”
John bit down on his lips to hide his own grin. He’d taught Alan much in negotiations and now he was his own certified menace. John was also close enough to hear the less than Grandma friendly words Scott was muttering under his breath.
What made it all the more funny was grandma’s own potty mouth and creativity with expletitives, where ‘Do as I say but not as I do,’ couldn't even come to her defence.
Soon enough, or in John’s opinion, couldn't be soon enough, the ghosts were all busted and the end credits rolling.
John yawned, warm and nearly sleepy by Scott’s side, in spite of featured phantoms, spirits, ghouls and all manner of monsters. He was safe with his brothers.
Everyone began to get up to head off to bed. Scott poked a very settled pile of Virgil and Gordon with his foot when they looked like they weren’t moving.
Good nights were said with their usual accompanying hugs, then they all went up the stairs to their own of the row of bedrooms.
John snuck in an extra hug with Scott, before he dared enter his own.
The lights flicked on straight away, courtesy of Eos.
He checked all the corners and beneath his bed, because he wasn't Thunderbird Five for lack of definitely necessary precautions, and pulled on his pyjamas. Space ones, galaxy purple with shooting stars, of course.
Maybe he also asked Eos to keep an eye out for anything outside the usual parameters, but that was just between them.
Then he snuggled beneath his blankets, making sure none of his limbs were sticking out in the cold, not at all because of the irrational thoughts about ghosts grabbing him by the ankles and dragging him out.
John’s eyes slipped closed. He was nearly approaching soft, soothing sleep, when he jolted back awake.
There was a sound.
Not a loud one, but then ghosts weren’t always loud. Sometimes they snuck up on you. That was the worst.
John pulled the blanket over his head when his bed room door whooshed open.
A figure crept in.
John froze, sleep deprived mind not thinking clearly, imagination too full of things that go bump in the night. Maybe if he stayed very, very still it wouldn't see him.
The shadow moved across the room, coming ever closer.
John held his breath and hid.
Then the figure tripped on a book John had left on the floor and resolved into Alan swearing up a storm.
He hopped, rubbing at his toes, not at all scary. The furthest from that in fact, his littlest brother who still hadn't had his growth spurt and was just a kid who played too many video games and flew a rocket ship and loved the stars as much as he did.
John exhaled with a heaving swoosh, unburying himself from his blankets. Somewhat. Better safe than sorry, and it was still kinda cold on the island compared to temperature controlled Five.
“Hey John,” Alan said, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck, “Can I stay here tonight, there’s weird noises in my room?”
John nodded hurriedly. “Best get Virgil to check it out in the morning.”
He pulled the blankets back for just long enough for Alan to hop in, then huddled back beneath them.
“You’re scared too?” Alan was far too astute.
In the dark, hiding from imaginary things, John could admit more than he would in the daytime.
“Yeah I am. But we’ll be okay because we’re together.”
Alan cuddled up to him, pressed as close as possible against John’s chest. John wrapped his arms around Alan, burying his face in his soft hair.
He could feel Alan’s voice as quiet vibrations by his shoulder. “Yeah, we will be.”
Somehow, that made the corners far less likely to be containing any sorts of ghosts.

Outcast // Hayakawa Aki x GN! Reader Fluff
Tumblr media
Warnings: None. Sfw. Focuses on Aki and reader’s healthy relationship. Story note: This is before Power and Denji moved into his apartment and when Himeno was alive.
————- Note: I'M CRINGING SO HARD AT THIS ALREADY- ;_; ahem. Anyways, no manga spoilers or spoilers past season one are here. So Anime onlys are completely safe. :)
I randomly got motivation to do this since it is a shower thought I had. Fictional character brain rot, am I right? I don’t know if this is considered a full on fic but more of a one-shot. Hope you enjoy. This is my first time writing on Tumblr (or a full on one-shot in general lol) so yeah. Hope it isn't too bad, if you want you can give tips in comments. ^^
Ended up being a bit longer than I thought, it was fun writing even though I struggled a bit at times to be happy with the dialogue and stuff. May edit a bit (cough cough a lot) more.
————-
Another month, another day.
Nighttime had overtaken the skies as you hear your co-workers laughing and enjoying themselves. They're all having fun, no worries whatsoever.
You were invited by Himeno to go out and drink. To have some fun for a bit. To let go of reality for a bit. The harsh reality of devils and lives constantly being robbed of innocent people.
It was a successful mission, so you were at the ramen restaurant watching your colleagues get drunk off of alcohol. It smelled like sweat and alcohol in the air, as you quietly sat there at a table not speaking to anyone.
In all seriousness, you didn’t really want to come. You would much rather stay home in your comfort area. You mainly came for two reasons: one being that you didn't want to decline Himeno's offer and seem a bit rude. You were starting to run out of excuses to not come. Second, being that you didn’t want to be the only outcast who didn’t come to a meeting where your co-workers are supposed to celebrate and forget about worries. All in bliss, getting high off of alcohol, escaping from reality.
You chose a chair where not too much people were as their laughs kept echoing. You sat somewhere to at least make you seem a bit included. You didn't drink any alcohol. You weren't a big fan of some. Certain drinks to you tasted disgusting in your opinion, and you didn't know how someone like Himeno could drink it raw.
You tried to peer your eyes at anything in an attempt at trying to ease the awkwardness of not having anyone to speak to. You didn't want to make it obvious you felt left out. If you were being honest, you felt like an outcast, like you weren’t really as included as some other workers are. Nobody tried to talk to you. And if they would do other activities, you'd be at home. Uninvited.
Or if you were invited, you barely spoke to anyone. If someone would reserve seats in a restaurant for the entire division, you would be the the person who is most likely to have been forgotten. Leading you to then be forced to eat at another table away from everyone else. Either that or if you do sit with many others, you'd be there in silence. Only occasionally speaking as you watch everyone else chat away, carefree. Having fun, getting high, getting that spark in their chest when they find someone they really enjoy talking to, and enjoying their time there in general.
So in conclusion, you felt like an outcast to others. Some people would only occasionally speak to you, only to stop speaking to you again. You barely knew anyone of them outside of work.
Well, except for one person that is.
Hayakawa Aki. Professional Aki. Known for being number one devil hater. The man whose family was robbed of him. The man who was forced to grow up too early in his life.
The Gun Devil obviously impacted everyone. Including you. So you couldn’t help but sympathize with him. At least some people who got affected had somebody. Whether it was an aunt, uncle, grandparent…While for Hayakawa, he had nobody. He had always blamed himself for his brother’s death. You knew that since you’ve known him for a while now. He always has blamed himself ever since that day.
November 18th, 10:00 am.
The Gun Devil would arrive and hit Japan for 26 seconds.
Deaths: 57,912.
United States: 124 seconds, 548,012 deaths.
China: 37 seconds, 316,932 deaths.
Soviet Union: 210 seconds, 155,302 deaths.
India: 15 seconds, 29,950.
Canada: 7 seconds, 8,481 deaths.
Mexico: 2 seconds, 6,088 deaths.
Hawaii: 0.4 seconds, 780 deaths.
In about five minutes, the Gun Devil managed to rob almost 1.2 million people of their lives.
New laws were enforced, orphanages began to overflow with desperate children and teenagers alike, kids, adults, grandparents, teachers, nearly everyone alike was impacted by the Gun Devil.
Hayakawa Aki, the man who deep down is filled with sorrow, anger, and guilt.
You remembered all of that. Felt a bit of sorrow, pity, and guilt in your gut for him and other victims, as a familiar face you began to notice was standing in a corner.
You couldn't help but feel yourself light up a bit. It was an opportunity. At least someone you know is there. At least someone who you know personally is there instead of being alone awkwardly, barely knowing anyone. You then stood up, and begin to wave to him, being careful not to be too loud to the point other workers would notice you. But just enough to get his attention. He noticed your hand, as his eyes met yours and he began to walk to you. Suit tied perfectly, hair tied in a topknot, eyes darting onto you.
Mister Hayakawa. Number one devil hater. The one who is supposedly cold on the outside.
As he walked toward you, you lightly smiled as he breathed in a cigarette.
“Aki- how are you?”
You were desperate to find someone to talk to by this point. You felt like an outcast at times as stated. Barely anyone talked to you at the moment and before. You couldn't help but feel alone at times. Every time you'd met up for the division to hang out and have fun it'd be the same. You would just be silent and ponder why you even decided to come.
Aki was the only one you knew well in that division. He was the only one who attempted to talk to you. The one who you could sometimes notice smiling in your presence.
Aki, the one you can go to to vent your problems.
Aki, the one who even bothers to ask how you are.
Aki, the one who speaks ever so politely to people that deserve it. Especially you.
Hayakawa Aki, the one who is always concerned for your safety despite what people say. Hayakawa Aki, the one who treats your wounds if you injure yourself. Hayakawa Aki, the one who you can always go to for comfort. The one you trust…
You were broken out of your train of thought, when he responded.
“I’m fine for now, thank you. I hope everything is going well for you.”
“It’s going fine so far- just glad to see you here so I can have someone to talk to. Better than just sitting there alone, am I right?”
He raised an eyebrow slightly.
“Hm? Don’t you have anyone else who talks to you here? You seem easy to get along with. I'm sure there's someone other than me.”
“Yeah, well…”
You couldn’t help but feel a flutter when he said you were, “easy to get along with.” Did he mean it? Cold devil hater Mister Hayakawa, calling someone easy to get along with? How nice. How surprising it’s you out of all people.
“I don’t really have any, close ones here y’know? I mean…Nobody really tried to reach out to me except for you. Or at least not as much.”
He lightly took a puff of his cigarette, when he spoke again.
“I see.”
You couldn’t help but notice a bit of pity in his eyes. Like he felt a bit, bad for you in a way? It was very hard to notice. But you can swear he at least feels a tiny bit of pity for you. A bit of empathy.
Aki empathizes with you. He remembers what it was like alone. Having to recover his family’s cold and lifeless bodies. Or at least what was left. They didn’t even look human. They looked like cold mannequins disguised as humans. No life in their eyes. He remembers the cold air and numb feeling he felt in his chest. He doesn't even know how to describe it.
He remembers being frozen in fear as he felt indescribable emotions during that time. A bit of denial when he first saw his house get blown away. Trying to process what just happened to not only him, but the entire world. Fear, anger, sorrow, guilt…
He felt alone. Like an outcast, perhaps? Nobody was there. That was something that hit him like a rock. Something he had absolutely no choice but to accept. No aunts, uncles, grandparents, no nothing.
He remembers coming to the realization that he truly was alone. Lonely, is the right word perhaps. Over time, he didn’t feel anything to it anymore as he first did. He was now numb. He felt nothing. Empty, perhaps. He was used to that feeling now. As stated, he became numb.
He has been used to waking up, going to work, and in hopes of getting closer to achieving his goal of revenge to soothe all of the anger and sadness he has. He just felt a bit...empty. Perhaps.
He lived for nothing but revenge. Anger, hate, sadness, guilt.
He’d wake up every day in his empty apartment. It was the same cycle every day since the Gun Devil.
Wake up, go to work, come home, sleep, repeat.
Wake up, go to work, come home, sleep, repeat.
Wake up…go to work, come home, sleep, repeat…
Revenge. That was his only purpose. Nothing else. Repeat the same cycle every day and hope to get closer to his goal as stated. Hope to soothe the pain. Hope to get peace by revenge.
Afterall, he had nobody. So why should he care about anyone or anything else?
Although, there was one exception.
Someone that feels just as lonely as him at times. Someone that sits alone at gatherings, such as this one. Barely talking to anyone. Someone who can listen to him. Comfort him. Support him. Just as much as he does to other’s. Almost as much as to how he doesn't hesitate to pull out his sword to save a life. Almost as much as how with each stab or usage of the blade reduces his lifespan with every time he tears a devil's flesh.
Aki cries, you and Himeno know that.
Even if it is just a partner he has known for a bit or a rookie, he cries. He cares.
Aki, whose heart deserves so much more.
Aki, who is deep down one of the most empathetic and caring man you've ever known.
Aki, who’d cry over your death.
Aki, who would do anything to protect you even if he won’t admit how much you mean to him…
Sometimes, he might even think when he sees you that he might have something in his life other than revenge, anger, sorrow, guilt, or the same cycle for once.
Maybe, instead of going through the same endless and empty cycle, it was pretty fun to talk to you.
The day got a bit more fun whenever he talked to you. It was just recently he noticed that. He'd feel something whenever he would see the way you enjoy talking to him. Whether it was him telling you how ridiculous you can be, whether it was about devils, whether it is him venting his frustrations...
To see you smile, laugh, and to know you enjoyed it just as much. You were so grateful to how he was one of the few, no, the only one who reached out to you in and outside of work.
Aki, the one who tries to include you even in gatherings like these. The one who at least tries to speak to you if he sees you're alone in gatherings. All so that you don't get the saame feeling he gets when he's alone.
Aki, who makes the places where you're usually an outcast, left out in conversations, kind of fun.
Back at the present, you were there in your chair. The air smelling like alcohol, beer, and sweat. Aki stood there. His tall figure looking over you. Analyzing you.
That’s when you realized he has been standing this whole time.
It was a long mission, his legs must be sore and tired. You notice the bandage over his arm due to him donating some skin to the fox devil. He deserves a rest. A whole break honestly. A whole break from this miserable life in general. From this sorrowful world. A world where he could be happy and have a life purpose that isn’t revenge. Aki, who deserves so much more...
It comes to your mind to offer a seat to Aki.
“Oh, you’ve been standing a lot, haven’t you?”
“I guess so.”
“Here.”
You get up, and slide the chair out a bit.
You see he gets a bit confused as you pull the chair out, that's when you explain.
“You can have my seat.”
He gets a bit caught off guard by the sudden gesture. A nice act of kindness to him. He then begins to politely decline, not wanting to take your seat.
“Hm? It’s fine. I’m alright with standing. Thank you for the offer though.”
“Nono, you need a break, Aki. You really should...relax for once. You’ve been through a lot. And we got out of that mission barely alive. We don't even know if we'll survive the day tomorrow...So because of that,"
"can I at least offer you a seat, Mister Hayakawa?”
Been through a lot.
Been through a lot is an understatement.
For a while, he’s had nobody and his only life purpose was revenge.
Yet hear you are, concerned for him. Caring for his life. Even though you know his lifespan has been shortened due to the curse devil, you are still there with him. He gets baffled when he thinks about it. Someone as kind and sweet as you nurturing him. Listening to him. Even if he can't even owe you a full life if he survived. But yet, here you are still wanting him to relax. Offering him a seat. Comforting him. Smiling at him. Talking to him outside of work. Being concerned for him...
You’re a pretty damn good person, he thinks.
Just the way your eyes light up when you talk to him. The way they light up when you get really into conversations with him. That spark in your chest. The way you act that way around him.
He’d pretend to be annoyed by you at times. By your ridiculous conversations at times. Mister perfect Hayakawa. Always so professional. But deep down, he can’t deny it.
You’re adorable.
He gets out of his thoughts about you, about your pretty face. The one he could never bring himself to hurt or insult. When he is about to speak again to politely decline once again, you begin to slide his body down onto the chair stand up.
He gets a bit caught off guard when your arms go onto him. A flutter goes off in his chest as he realizes your skin is touching his.
“Please, let me, Mister Hayakawa.”
You lightly smile at him when your eyes meet his.
Mister Hayakawa. He’d pretend to be annoyed by the childish nickname you gave him just to tease him, however he can’t help but lightly smile at your childish teasing's. How you are always more cheerful around him. Especially when he tries to include you in conversations he notices you're left out in. He can't help but find it cute with how comfortable you are with him.
As he gets forced to sit down, you begin to walk away to maybe try and find another seat or a comfortable place to stand. But that’s when you feel a hand on your arm, ushering you down.
“Since there’s one seat, we’ll make it work.”
“Wait- hu-“
You get extremely caught off guard, when he drags you down onto the chair until you’re on his lap.
“Wait- Aki- wha-?“
“There’s one chair here, isn’t there?”
“How about we both sit here. It works. Doesn’t it?”
Your eyes widen a bit, extremely flustered and caught off guard. You did not expect that at all. Especially from Aki out of all people.
“Aki I’m going to crush you-“
“I’m fine. I can handle you sitting on my lap.”
You’re holding back your weight to not crush him, you're tensed up and incredibly flustered at him suddenly offering you on his lap. You look at him, a bit shocked. As he continues smoking his cigarette non-challantly like it's nothing.
You get even more caught off guard when he has his arms go onto your back and stomach, trying to straighten your posture.
Since when did he get so bold? You wonder.
When did he get so handsome? So charming?
“Straighten your posture a bit, bad posture can cause back pain. I don't want your back being sore on the next mission.”
“R-right…”
You swear you can hear him lightly chuckle as you’re on his lap. On how flustered you are. This is unlike him. Very unlike him. He's a sweet and empathetic man deep down. You know that. However this is in public, in front of others, where anyone can see.
However, this one time, perhaps he doesn’t care.
He wants you to be included. To not be like him when he was alone. Cold, empty, going through the same endless meaningless cycle in hopes for magically finding happiness one day.
Aki empathizes with you, Aki would always understand your emotions no matter what. Whatever happens, he'd always be as understanding as he possibly could with you.
“Aki, are you sure this is oka-“
“I’m the one who offered you on my lap, didn’t I?”
You nod, when his hands go to your shoulders to massage it. He tries to get you to relax, noticing how tense you are.
"You should relax, being tensed up can also cause soreness."
Because of those words, you begin to ease up a bit. You feel your body slowly stop being tense. And you swear you hear Aki chuckle about how flustered you are.
You’re cute. He thinks to himself.
A few minutes go by, and you and Aki begin to have some small talk. Some parts of the conversation about devils, how work is going, life, advice for outside of work…
For the first time in this gathering, you genuinely smile and laugh with him. As Aki looks at you, he notices you have that spark in your eye. The feeling you get when you're really enjoying a conversation with someone. That feeling in your chest. Like a fire being lit up and the flames burning. That great feeling. And if you're being honest, you can tell Aki feels the same.
Aki, the man you can always trust to be your therapist. The one who would wipe your tears if you cried. The one who calms you down. Helps you relax. You, the one Aki is empathetic towards. The one who Aki trusts to talk to. The one he can vent to. The few he wouldn't mind crying in front of.
You continue chatting instead of drinking. Him chuckling at some of your funny or weird retorts. You're still on his lap. Which in your opinion, is a lot more fun than getting high off of beer and alcohol as an escapism from reality.
Perhaps this night was a bit fun after all.

The significance of the claw machines in the opening of season 2
This is the first theory I've ever really posted or even MADE, and I haven't seen anyone else address it so apologies if I'm just repeating what someone else has already said; but yeah, these are just some observations I made recently, and they mostly have to do with the the intro to season 2 and how that potentially relates to the future of a rather significant main character.
More under the cut! And spoilers for season 2, if you haven't already guessed.
Every week I tune in to watch Link Click with my friends, and only at episode 10, i.e. a week ago, did i notice that in the opening, all the stuffed animals surrounding the claw machines are bunny rabbits.
Tumblr media
It's a bit hard to see on account of the dim lighting, but I assure you that every single plush on the outside of those claw machines (and inside, at least in this shot) is a bunny rabbit. You can check the OP out on youtube if you want as well, if you want to confirm.
At first I thought, "Maybe the animators were just trying to save money on the budget!" But then I remembered that in the very next shot, we see other stuffed animal models that aren't rabbits:
Tumblr media
This is the interior of one of the claw machines, presumably the one from episodes 4-5, and we can see 3D models of plushies such as bears and cats, alongside the rabbits of the outside.
And even in episodes 4-5, which are conversely animated in 2D, we can see there are a variety of other animals in each of the claw machines. And although the outlines aren't the clearest, it's still easy to discern they aren't ALL the same plushies as in the machine Tianxi is focused on:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From left to right as seen in the second image, I'll call each claw machine CM1, 2, and 3.
In CM2, we can see there's many different animals, majority with tails. I had a theory that they might be related to the animals of the Chinese zodiac, but you can't see them too clearly, so I'm not too sure.
CM3 isn't clear either, but the plushes/toys are definitely different to the other ones. On close inspection, I think there are bears and rabbits, but coloured red and white instead of pink, brown and greys/whites, like in CM1.
So clearly they didn't just have just one bunny plush model they had to reuse, and they put in the effort of hand drawing different plushies in the other claw machines. Plus, the budget for the intro must have been enormous— they weren't exactly pinching pennies. So why pile ONLY rabbits on the outside of the claw machines in the intro?
My theory is that it has something to do with my beloved Qiao Ling.
From the very first episode season 1, the show has set up a recurring rabbit motif in relation to Qiao Ling. We see this first in her phone case:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I put in a second photo of her phone for reference, and that one is from season 2, either episode 9 or 10.
So, bunny ears on the phone case. Big deal, probably just a fun piece of visual storytelling to add to her character— maybe she's into 'meng' culture. She's about the age to be into it, right?
Well, let's look at the chibi spinoff, Daily Life in Lighttime!
Tumblr media
I don't think it's at the end of every episode this animal segment appears, but after the main events of each episode, we get to see the main characters as animals, doing animal things. Pretty straightforward— LG is a cat, CXS is a dog, and QL is a rabbit. Another thing connecting QL with the motif of rabbits.
In the official art by INPLICK, who did the character designs for the show, Qiao Ling is also commonly depicted with rabbits/a rabbit motif, and the boys with their respective animals as well.

On top of that, we know the show is set in 2021. Based on her character profiles, we know Qiao Ling is 22 years old, making her birth year 1999 (March 16th, if anyone cares). This makes her, you guessed it, year of the Rabbit!
So, let's tie this back to the claw machines. We've got a character who is established in show and in official art to be associated with rabbits, and we've got an abundance of rabbit plushes on the outside of the claw machines. Link Click is always very intentional with their imagery and mise en scene, this isn't an accident. So, what exactly does this mean?
My theory is that Qiao Ling will come to play a very significant role in the finale and upcoming season 3.
Initially, when me and my friend discussed this (shout out to Lara if you're reading this); we figured it might just be another reference to how Qiao Ling is metaphorically on the outside of the supernatural happenings. She is the only main character without powers, she didn't know what CXS and LG were doing with the photos, she was the first of the mains to get possessed by red eyes, who we now know are a wombo combo of Li Tianxi and Li Tianchen. But why go to such lengths to compound on something we already know?
So then I started to wonder, maybe it means she is less protected than the others? After all, she was the first to get possessed, she is the only one without any supernatural powers. I thought it might mean imminent doom for Qiao Ling— which would suck, because (and this is especially applicable if you've seen the most recent episode, i.e. s2e11) Link Click is not the best when it comes to leaving female characters alive!!!!!
It adds up— the animals on the inside of the claw machine are "safe", metaphorically and literally. They are protected by the glass (and also the impossibility of winning anything from a claw machine). But on the outside, they are up for grabs, easy to be destroyed or harmed. The claw machine ensures safety, and when you're outside the machine, nothing is guaranteed. So when we see the inside of the claw machine in the shot of that pink cat plush, i.e. the second image in this post, we see that there aren't as many rabbits in the claw machine, meaning less safety for QL.
(also if you want to strengthen that argument, that stuffed cat that liu lan and li tianxi won from the claw machine was torn apart by li fan when they got home).
((and even in the est. shot where we do see rabbits on the inside, there are much less than on the outside.))
So, Qiao Ling the outsider in this situation, who has as far as we know no powers and not much of a clue as to the supernatural happenings (and who let's be real only became plot significant recently, as much as i love her), her animal is on the outside of the claw machines. Simple.
And then the trailer for the finale of s2 dropped, and we got this lovely frame:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My friend and I thought it might be Qiao Ling's powers awakening, some others think it might be Tianxi transferring her powers to Qiao Ling. However, if you watch the rest of the trailer, you'll notice that Qiao Ling is left entirely defenseless, just sitting by Tianxi's body.
While the rest of the fight is presumably happening. These characters have guns and tasers! Why is she turning her back on them when she has no natural defenses of her own (save for those sick martial arts skills)?
Especially because Qian Jin, who has been established to want to harm QL and even rigged up a god damn BOMB to set off for when she and CXS went to retrieve LG:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is on the scene with a gun!
Tumblr media
I think that something bad is going to happen to Qiao Ling, the "outsider", either in the finale or in season 3. Could be death, could be a major injury, but whatever it is, it will have been foreshadowed through the stuffed rabbits and the claw machines.
-
kudos if you read this much lol i'm not sure if i structured my arguments well but i got really into this theory. and maybe i might make a post about the symbolism of the pacman machine in the intro as well? idk. lmk what you think!! i'd love to know if there's anything i'm missing or if there are any other interpretations to glean from this :)

Percy Jackson spoilers episode 8
I'm not joking, i commented everything.
(i'm putting the episode in pause to write everything... So i don't have to do 10000 posts about this episode, so if you are reading this, hold your horses because this is going to be a long post (probably) not edited, from a person watching this in Europe starting to watch this at 3:11 am... And English is not my first language, so...sorry before hand)
LUKE!!! LUKE TALKING?! REALLY?! LIKE... COME ON!!! Don't do this to me... Not me vibing with the foreshadowing just in the begining of the episode.
THOSE WHO WENT ALL "WUAHHH WHERE'S THE TRAING LESSON FROM LUKE?" HERE IT IS!!! YOU REALLY THOUGHT THEY WON'T SHOW IT BEFORE MAKING PERCY FIGHT A GOD?! (I mean, they could have...but come on!... That would have being insane and would have make Percy to op and this works perfectly to remind us the "bond" between Percy and Luke at camp, just before what readers knew It was going to happen)
Oh~ i love the Ares doesn't take well that others think he can't have a single original thought... But i LOVE more that he literally decided to go with the "say hi to your mommy for me" like... Ares my man, god of war, sir... You fucked up so badly with just that... That kid is going to make Hephaestus and his chain-net over you and Aphrodite look like a fun story after Percy "son of Sally" Jackson finish humilliate you.
Aaaaand we got golden Blood + enemy for Life (Where's the curse, sir? Where's the "your sword will fail you when you most need it"?)
Uh! Pretty helmet~ I said it before, and i repeat myself, Hades has good taste in art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the "the last war on olympus caused wwii" and not like the book, i like It better this way, like "everything is the gods fault" because It is. (I'm sure Luke will comment this at some point)
Also, Annabeth clueless because she wasn't there... I'm like, yeah, it's the one of the trio that could catch up just by context, she IS the wise girl after all.
THE NECKLACE WITH HER FATHER'S RING!!! OMG!!!! ANNABETH, DARLING, DEAR... I LOVE THIS, SO MUCH.
(Leah is Annabeth, look at her!!! If someone says something bad about her acting just because their racism... i hope Apollo write their names in the plague list or the bad music for the rest of their lifes one... I hope there's a list for that)
Grover: e-mail? Maybe?
Percy: *nah, it's time those gods know what they are dealing with* what's the Glory on that?
(Walter, dear boy, your face in that moment...perfect Percy moment just there)
OH MY GODS!!! I NEED A TOUR IN THAT OLYMPUS!!! but again...WHY THE FUCKING ARCHES?!?!?!
Tumblr media
Okay... Hold on! HOLD ON!!! THEY DID A THING HERE I THINK COULD EXPLAIN THE FUCKING ARCHES...THE ARCHERS MIGHT NOT GIVE ME NIGHTMARES.
(Look behind, there are temples with easter asian architecture and i spot a building that reminds me a bit of Santa Sofia or Saint Peter of the Vatican... So... Maybe they are implying that not only the greek gods are chilling there in olympus? That could be interesting.)
Luke, i'm seeing you...
WoW!! Wooooo!!! Not the Annabeth IS terrify of spiders coming now and from him, Luke himself, just to say "hey! Demigods are small but if the gods thinks you are scary they'll kill you" GODS they are MAKING Luke soooo much justice, like, he needs to be like this if they didn't portrait him like this "big brother figure" it would be incomprehensible that so many Demigods will follow him. He IS a leader. He IS reliable.
Tumblr media
Seriously, i'm in LOVE with all that Big city vibe of the olympus... Like... I Understand why Annabeth wants to be architect after seeing all that. (Disney, you better give us something good in the 5th season, and i have high hopes for the laberinth after seeing this)
I'm so sad about the death of Zeus actor... I'm liking a lot how he is acting Zeus, like a fucking CEO know-it-all Who thinks Percy is wasting his time saying things he already know but doesn't want to believe yet. "I will not be weaken by my brothers" darling, Zeus, that's the youngest brother part of you speaking. Shut the fuck up and listen to the kid.
Percy speaks facts.
Oh!!! Daddy Ken, i mean, Poseidon is here, protecting his kid~. (Better solution than turning him into a tree, actually showing up, heh!)
BEG YOUR FUCKING PARDON!? IM ALREADY EMOTIONAL BECAUSE MY OTHER FICTIONAL FATHER FIGURE IN MY OTHER SILLY SHOW MIGHT DIE THIS FRYDAY... WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU MADE POSEIDON SAY "I SURRENDER" TWICE!!! TO FUCKING ZEUS!!! TO PROTECT PERCY?! I FUCKING LOVE THE SHOW.
Hermes IS the FUCKING snitch of the olympus.
Poseidon : "Who knows about father?"
Zeus: "Ares, Hades, you, i... And fucking Hermes so..."
Both: "everyone, then..."
He really asked Mr. Impertinent if he is obedient?! Hahahaha... Poseidon, dear beach daddy, sir... He is yours and Sally's, what makes you think he'll be obedient?!
"Ares IS a moron" sooooo ... Percy speaks facts because he speaks his father language then. Sorry, this is funnier than i thought It would be. Poseidon being an affectionate father for like 3 seconds before the daddy issues kicked in and push his son away with magic...
Tumblr media
THIS. This here with the victorius Hero looking at the defeated who even "dead" had safe his life. Because the mention of Thalia's death was enough for Zeus to spare Percy's life... She had save Percy by being dead and make her father feel guilty for that. Also, he left camp making jokes about the tree and Thalia's death, and look how serious and respectful he looks now. Admiring that tree, Thalia, and all what she means to the demigods... (Maybe i'm reading too much into It, but i liked this frames too much)
Did i spot a pair of twins?! I need the second season NOW and i'm not even half way of the last episode of the first one...
SECOND HUG OF ANNABETH TO PERCY!!! AND HE IS SMILING!!! BOY I WANT TO HUG THEM BOTH... MY BABYS...
Oh~ they are going to do this "Clarise IS guilty but we couldn't risk a war here" to the end so the show watchers don't see It coming. Okay... I like how they are doing this.
Luke and Percy alone in the forest while Annabeth watches Clarise... Yeah... This is it.
I like the lights changing colors because of the fireworks but just giving more dramatic contrast to all the scene. Oh~ Luke's face... My gods!! (These kids are making me insane with how good actors they are!!!)
Luke trying to recruit Percy because he sees himself reflected in Percy, with their mothers suffering because of the gods. "This wasn't to betray you Percy. My enemies are the gods." SEE!!! RIGHT THERE!!! THAT'S A BOY ABOUT TO REBEL AGAINST HIS FATHER, TRYING TO RECRUIT HIS FRIENDS BECAUSE HE IS RIGHT BUT USING THE WORSE WAYS POSSIBLE TO DO THINGS!!!
I said it before, and i'm saying It again... I LOVE THE SHOW.
BACKBITER!!!!! OH MY GODS!!! THAT SWORD IS...HAVE YOU ALL SEE THAT!!! IT FUCKING CUT ANYTHING.
"WE is the word Zeus fear most." And again, as i said above, he is so RIGHT and so wrong at the same time. Luke speech is a 10/10
Percy's reaction. PERCY'S REACTION!!! first to Luke's speech. And then when he wounded Luke with his own sword, he INMEDIATELY apologize to him. "Sorry, i didn't mean to..." Because he knows Luke is being manipulated by Cronos, he still sees him as a friend. And that's why he is scared, also because Luke cut him back, but because his friend is choosing to betray him.
WOOOO!!! ANNABETH?! WOOOOO... LUKE'S FACE!!! ANNABETH'S FACE!!! MY GODS!!! THOSE KIDS!!!
Chiron: "Cronos is persuasive"
Percy: "i'm a seaweed brain, stubborn as fuck... I'll be fine..."
I love Dionysus. Like...
Dionysus: "wait, wait, wait... Peter Johnson, why is everyone calling you Percy?"
Percy: "i'm Percy Jackson, that's my name"
Dionysus: "are you sure? You don't look like a Percy to me, Peter"
A seaweed brain, has being delivered and i'm vibing, living, happy...
ANNABETH IS GOING TO DISNEYWORLD AND PERCY SMILING MADE HER WORRY SHE WILL BE IN TROUBLE THERE!!! SHE IS SO ADORABLE!!! I'LL PROTECT THAT CHILD WITH MY LIFE, I SWEAR TO ALL THE GODS!!!
Grover!!! GROVER TELLING PERCY HE IS GOING TO SEARCH FOR PAN IN THE SEA!!! AND PERCY ACTING LIKE A NEPO BABY!!! LOVED IT!!!
Baby coming back to the beach House... Sally!!!!!!!!!!
Nooooooooooo... Fucking Cronos!!!!
Sally: *all worried* "another nightmare?"
Persassy: "grampa"
Sally: *i swear i saw her roll her eyes* "don't call him that"
I LIKE THE END OF GABE!!!! FUCK YOU GABE!!! Sally is divorcing him, change the locks and his first question to his lawyer is if he knows how to pick a lock... Fuck you, Gabe~
He turning himself into a statue because he opened a box for Percy (wich IS illegal) and after he called the head of Medusa gross... Poetic justice.
(i'm ending to watch this and write this at 5:22... My brain isn't braining anymore. So... Tomorrow i'll post a separated part about the thrones of the gods and maybe trying to put my degree in good use and picking all the art references i could and make a post about them)

Please baby, stay with me
Tumblr media
Eddie Munson x You (Fem!reader) Based on this request from anonymous!
Summary: You and your boyfriend have been through a lot, but he still doesn’t know that much about you. Until you move in next door and he finds out why you are the way you are…
A/N: This is my work and I don’t give anyone the permission to post it anywhere claiming to be someone else’s. I worked hard on this, if you enjoy it please interact. Requests are open.
TW: Abuse, language, sexual assault, drugs, light talk of sexy times. MINORS DNI! It’s a pretty heavy one so please take these warnings seriously! I don’t want anyone accidentally getting upset. I love y’all too much for that.
Kinda spoilers for season 4? Stuff is talked about. This happens after the end and he lives god damn it.
Beep….beep…beep…
The heart rate monitor was steady for the first time in a few days, which calmed your uneasy stomach a bit. Eddie was going to pull through, he had to. You’d pulled Eddie out of the upside down and back into the real Hawkins so he could get treated. Much to his disappointment of you crying and screaming at him to stay alive, he just wanted to protect you. It had been a week but the doctors finally gave you good news. He was going to make it, so you could scream at him when he woke up. Your nails were bleeding from the amount of biting and physically you were exhausted, but you didn’t let anyone see it. Steve and Dustin came to visit the most, and you kept your soft smile when they were there. A lot of the times everyone came to see Max as well so it was short lived, the fake-ness you had to portray. The fake smile that Eddie would scold you for wearing. It was okay now though, he was coming back. He was alive.
7 months later
“Okay baby, I’ll see you in a few!”
Eddie hung up the phone and sighed happily as he threw his denim jacket on. You called him… for the first time in two years, you called him to see if he wanted to hang out. Your entire relationship he initiated every date, every hang out and every touch. Not that he minded, he loved showing you how he loved you and he loved watching you still act surprised that he did. Yet today, you asked him with a shaky voice over the phone to go see a movie. He was giddy like it was the first date all over again. Throwing his van into gear, he cranked his music and headed to your house, and the moving truck that greeted him turned a knot in his stomach. You were already outside waiting as he hopped out to open your door for you.
“Hey…what’s going on? Are you moving? Y/N?”
You kept a small smile on your face, the one you always wore.
“Yea but we’re staying in Hawkins. My dad just got sick of the house. Too many memories of my mother.”
Eddie relaxed, you were staying here. Thank god, but he noticed the tension in your body. He pulled you in for a hug and smiled when you relaxed into him. He was your safety net; so you didn’t want to scare him away with the whole truth.
“Well maybe I can help you move some of your stuff. I just finished helping the Darran’s move out of the trailer next to mine. I’m kinda good at being a big strong man.”
You laughed and kissed his cheek shyly. He lit up like a Christmas tree.
“Yeah about that…My dad actually bought that trailer. So…we’re gonna be neighbors…please don’t that that’s weird.”
You were scared he was going to get sick of you, and you couldn’t lose him. Thankfully you forgot how mushy and emotionally attached to you Eddie is. He picked you up and spun you around.
“Are you kidding?? We can see each other all the time! We can do late night movies and I can come over and surprise you any time-“
“No.”
He stopped suddenly when you tended up.
“Oh…I mean…”
He didn’t know what to say, mainly because he didn’t know what he said that made you so nervous. Did you not want to live by him? Were you going to get sick of him? Oh god…did he annoy you??
“No surprise visits. Please. Just…I don’t like surprises.”
He nodded slowly. You tended to be extremely secretive with your life and he was hoping this could be an opportunity to see behind the curtain. He still felt like you didn’t fully trust him; and Eddie was determined to get you to fall for him as hard as he had fallen for you.
“Okay…no surprises. But we’re still doing movie nights.”
He kissed you softly and you chuckled. Deep down you were nervous as hell. No one knew about your home life, Eddie hadn’t ever even been inside your house. What if he couldn’t handle it? What if you lost him again? The music from his van shut out your thoughts and you smiled as Eddie’s hand was on your thigh. The movies would be a good distraction for now.
Moving day came and went. You specifically picked a day that Eddie had a big DND event so he couldn’t make it. The thought of Eddie meeting your father sent a cold chill down your spine, but you were a problem solver. You know how to get around obstacles, and by the time Eddie got home you were unpacked and in bed. You left a note on his door saying you were too tired to hang out so he wouldn’t come over. The first real problem came the next day.
Eddie bounced over to your trailer with a bunch of flowers in hand, knocking loudly at the door. He heard a grunt from inside and then a deeper voice he’d never heard before…probably her father.
“Y/N get the damn door!”
You rushed to it and found Eddie outside, looking concerned to say the least. Stepping out you moved him back towards his home.
“Thanks for the flowers babe. I’ve got a lot to do today I can’t really hang out. Please call me next time before you come over.”
“But…”
“Thanks Eds. Love you.”
You snatched the flowers, kissed his cheek and ran inside. Something was definitely up, Eddie always though of himself as dumb but even he could pick up on that. You put the flowers in your room and silently cried. The previous nights bruises flowered on your abdomen. Thank god you wore big t-shirts. You heard a beer can open down the hall and prayed tonight wouldn’t be so bad.
The days that followed were emotionally some of the hardest ones you’ve ever gone through. You were bending over backwards to keep your dad happy, but his demands were increasingly intense. You knew he was probably about to lose his job because he kept calling off work, and he didn’t let you get out of the house for too long so you couldn’t get a job either. Your depression got worse and worse and Eddie noticed. You barely came out of the house, and when you did your eyes were sunken in like you hadn’t slept in ages. It for so bad that you fell asleep in the middle of a conversation with him. He let you rest, but his worry just grew.
He’d called Steve and starting talking to him about you. Eddie felt like he was losing you but he didn’t know how to stop it because you wouldn’t talk to him. They were at Steve’s house watching the kids when Max overheard their conversation.
“Go to her house. Unannounced.”
Her voice was firm, almost like she knew something. Eddie tilted his head like a confused golden retriever.
“She asked me not to. I don’t want to further upset her.”
Something happened between Max and Steve. She gave him a look and Steve’s eyes got big.
“You should do it man. I can come with you if you want. She may be, in trouble.”
Eddie’s heart dropped. There was no way you would hide that from him right? Right?
———————-
“Sit down. Shut up and do what he fucking tells you.”
Your dad slapped you hard against your face. You were frozen in fear. His boss was over, trying to fire him but your dad had a way with words. They settled on an agreement, you for his job. The last time this happened your mother intervened before you were actually assaulted, but she wasn’t here anymore.
“Daddy. Please. Don’t make me do this!”
You were crying, yelling, begging for the man you once knew as your dad to come back. The alcohol poisoned his mind and killed the good father you grasped onto the memory of.
“Fuck you bitch. Just a whore like your fucking mother.”
He threw you down and you crashed against a table. Normally you were good with keeping in your yelps but this one hurt pretty bad. You cried out and his boss stepped in.
“I’ve got something that can shut the bitch up.”
He grabbed your shirt and tore it open, revealing you and the bruised torso you so carefully tried to hide. Oh god why was this happening to you. You had to get out of there.
“Stay away from me!”
You tried to push past both men but your dad pulled your hair back and kicked you back down. The other man began messing with his belt. You cried out for someone…anyone…and closed your eyes. A warm smile filled your mind, big brown doe eyes and a laugh that had a beautiful melody. Eddie was your safe place…but there is no way he’d want you after this.
“I’m so sorry Eddie.”
“DONT FUCKING TOUCH HER!!”
You almost smiled. That’s what he would say if he was here. The commotion made you open your eyes…and there he was. Eddie and Steve came in with baseball bats and they were fighting your dad and his boss.
“Eddie…”
You choked on your words. He was here. He was going to see what a failure you were. How horrible you really were. The illusion you spent so long making was shattered, but he was here to save you. One swift swing from Steve knocked out your dad and Eddie was already beating the shit out of his boss. Steve grabbed him.
“I got this. I’m calling the cops. Get her out of here man.”
“NO. Please not the cops. I can’t lose him. I can’t. I can’t. I can’t. I can’t. I can’t.”
You started panicking. How could you live on your own? You had no job, no money and you’d lose the trailer too. You’d be homeless…you needed him to survive.
“I’ve got her. Get hopper here now.”
10 minutes prior
Eddie hesitated when him and Steve turned onto your shared street. He really didn’t want to intrude on your personal space but something was definitely wrong. Steve explained Max’s home situation with her brother Billy and his dad. A lot of the same signs he saw in her, minus the being an asshole thing, Steve said Billy showed. Eddie chuckled at the thought of you trying to be mean. You were an Angel, you couldn’t hurt a fly. He could hit you with his car and you’d probably apologize to him for being in the way. It was why he was so worried, you just seemed so…fragile.
Parking the car Eddie sighed and turned to Steve.
“I’m not so sure about this ma-“
He stopped dead in his tracks. You screamed. He could hear it from his driveway. It wasn’t a scary movie scream either, it was a scream he knew all too well. He had once cried out at that capacity too, right before he died. The world moved in slow motion, Steve was already ready with a few baseball bats and numbly followed him. Locking his big brown eyes onto your tear streaked, panicked face he noticed a man trying to unbuckle his belt. Eddie was sent into overdrive.
Now
He came back from the anger black out to hear Steve telling him to get you out. He focused and dropped the bat, looking at you. Hopper would help, he was good with sensitive situations.
“Y/N. Baby. Come here.”
He approached you slowly but you didn’t care. You ran at him, ignoring the bruised ribs and busted lip. Your cheek was bleeding but none of it mattered. He wrapped you up in his body and carried you away from the nightmare trailer. The whole walk over was silent, your sobs muffled by his jacket were the only sound piercing the underwater feeling he had. Finally getting you inside and to his room, he laid you on the bed.
“I’m here baby.”
You tried to cover your damaged body but Eddie simply kissed you on your cheeks.
“We need to see how much damage was done. I know…it’s uncomfortable, but will you trust me?”
You’d never gotten naked around him before. You two have had heated make outs but all the groping was under clothes. You didn’t want him judging you, but here he was; he’d seen everything you were trying to hide and he still was being kind.
Wordlessly you told your shirt off to reveal a badly damaged torso. Your pants were next and the table you got pushed into cut a pretty big gash in your leg. Eddie immediately got first aid and started patching it up. You sat before him in nothing but your underwear as he tried to hold his own tears back.
“I’m sorry Eddie. I know…I know you might think I’m disgusting but please…please let me stay in your life. I don’t have to be your girlfriend but don’t le-“
“Y/N what the hell are you saying?”
“You…I know you don’t want me anymore but I love you. I can’t lose you.”
“Fucking Christ why would you think that? Of course I still want you, I’m in love with you. I just…why didn’t you tell me anything! I could have gotten you out. I could have done something…I could have saved you.”
It never dawned on you that he would feel bad for you. You assumed he’d toss you out like your father had. Just write you off as a sorry excuse for a human.
“Wh…why? Why would you want to?”
Now Eddie was pacing. All the love he’d shown you wasn’t near what he should have been doing. Your fathers hate was so much it made love a lie to you. He had to fix that.
“Why?? Because when you laugh I laugh. When you cry, I cry. When I see you shake your head at something you don’t like but you try to politely deal with it, it makes me giddy. When you bite your lip while you’re reading because you’re trying to focus, I get butterflies. When you sneeze and your shoulders do that little twitch, I feel pure bliss. Why? Because I am so in love with you and you don’t understand it because of your terrible father. Y/N, baby you deserve the world. I love you so much I don’t know how else to say it. You have this dumb Ass wanting to learn different languages so I can tell In 1,000 ways how I love you. I want to help you. You deserve to be saved baby. You saved me, please, dear God please let me save you.”
It was a lot. You weren’t used to honest love, but Eddie was kneeling at your feet, his hands gently on your knees spilling his heart out to you and you believed him. You didn’t believe what he said you deserved, but you believed he thought you deserved it. Some time passed before you silently got up and went to his closet. Throwing on an old band tee and you found some sweatpants, you felt a bit better covered up. Eddie hung his head in defeat but your sweet voice that crackled with emotion pulled him back.
“…Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Mmhmm. I’ll…I trust you Eddie Munson. I love you, so please…please be careful with me.”
If you weren’t so god dang delicate right now he’d pick you up and spin you around. Instead he opted to run to you and give you a gentle hug but a fiery kiss. Your tongues clashed together and it felt like the first real kiss you’ve ever had. Eddie pulled away to get some air and he smiled at you.
“Please baby, stay with me.”
“…just as long as you stay with me.”
Eddie kissed you again. You were safe, you were finally fully safe. God damn it he loved you.

A/N: that’s it! Sorry if there are typos! I definitely cried while writing this. I hope y’all like it!!
